Deaf-Blind Awareness Week海伦·凯勒周Every year the last week of JuneJune 27, 2000, is the 120th anniversary of the birth of Helen Keller, and each year the week in which her birthday falls is recognized as Deaf-Blind Awareness Week. In honor of Helen Keller -- and other members of the deaf-blind community, this week is dedicated to the deaf-blind.Every year the last week of June is devoted to one thing--recognition of the deaf-blind people in our midst. While the purpose of Deaf-Blind Awareness Week is to pay homage to Helen Keller, the deaf-blind woman who was born that week, the week focuses on increasing public awareness and understanding of deaf-blindness. According to the Helen Keller National Center (HKNC), about 70,000 people have hearing and vision loss. More than a decade ago, Deaf-Blind Awareness Week became an event officially recognized by the Federal government. The story of Helen Keller is well known. Born on June 27, 1880, the healthy infant was developing normally. But at the age of 19 months, an illness left her deaf and blind. When Helen was six, her equally famous teacher, Anne Sullivan, was able to teach her to communicate. Helen Keller went on to excel in all aspects of her life: graduating from college with honors and writing, lecturing, and inspiring people worldwide. The next is the proclamation of Helen Keller Deaf-Blind Awareness Week made by US president Ronald Reagan:Proclamation 5214 -- Helen Keller Deaf-Blind Awareness WeekJune 22, 1984By the President of the United States of AmericaKeller and her teacher Anne SullivanOur eyes and ears provide vital ways of interacting with the world around us. The lilt of laughter, the beat of a brass band, the smile of a friend, and the poetry of a landscape are but a few of the life blessings that our senses of sight and hearinghelp us to enjoy. But for some 40,000 Americans who can neither see nor hear, the world can be a prison of darkness and silence.Inadequate education, training, and rehabilitation for those who are deaf and blind may prevent these Americans from becoming independent and self-sufficient, thereby greatly limiting their life potential and imposing a high economic and social cost on the Nation. We must prevent such problems among our deaf-blind citizens by fostering their independence, creating employment opportunities, and encouraging their contributions to our society. Crucial to fulfilling this urgent national need is research on the disorders that cause deafness and blindness. Toward this end, the National Institute of Neurological and Communicative Disorders and Stroke and the National Eye Institute as well as a number of voluntary health agencies are supporting a wide range of investigative projects that one day may provide the clues to curing and preventing these devastating disorders. On June 27 we commemorate the 118th anniversary of the birth of Helen Keller, America's most renowned and respected deaf-blind person. Her accomplishments serve as a beacon of courage and hope for our Nation, symbolizing what deaf-blind people can achieve. In order to encourage public recognition of and compassion for the complex problems caused by deaf-blindness and to emphasize the potential contribution of deaf-blind persons to our Nation, the Congress, by Senate Joint Resolution 261, has authorized and requested the President to issue a proclamation designating the last week in June 1984 as ``Helen Keller Deaf-Blind Awareness Week.''Now, Therefore, I, Ronald Reagan, President of the United States of America, do hereby proclaim the week beginning June 24, 1984, as Helen Keller Deaf-Blind Awareness Week. I call upon all government agencies, health organizations, communications media, and people of the United States to observe this week with appropriate ceremonies and activities. In Witness Whereof, I have hereunto set my hand this twenty-second day of June, in the year of our Lord nineteen hundred and eighty-four, and of the Independence ofthe United States of America the two hundred and eighth.。

However, he has never been to school. Has this boy ever had any education?Education is discovering about ourselves and about the people and things around us. All the people who care about us — our parents, brothers , sisters, friends — are our teachers. In fact, we learn something from everyone we meet. We start learning on the day we are born, not on the first day" we go to school . Every day we have new experiences, like finding a bird's nest, discovering a new streetin our neighborhood, making friends with someone we didn't like before. New experiences are even more fun when we share them with other people.Encouragement from the people around us enables us to explore things as much as possible. As we grow up, we begin to find out what we are capable of doing. You may be good at cooking, or singing or playing football. You find this out by doing these things. Just thinking about cooking doesn't tell you if you are good at it.We learn so much just living from day to day. So why is school important? Of course you can learn some things better at home than at school, like how to do the shopping, and how to help old or disabled people who can' t do everything for themselves. At school, teachers help us to read and write. With their guidance, we begin to see things in different ways.48.The writer takes the African boy as an example to show that _______.A.African children are very poor B.some children are unlucky C.education takes many ways D.schools are of great importance49.One can find out what he is good at by .A.the encouragement of people aroundB.thinking of it when growing upC.the teachings of those he or she meetsD.trying much practice50.How the writer looks at the role of school is that _ .A.school is not so important as our living placesB.school enables us to understand the world in other waysC.school teaches us something useless at homeD.school cannot prepare us for our daily lives51.The passage tells us that _ .A.everyone gets education from the day he or she is bornB.different education trains different classes of peopleC.school is absolutely necessary if one wants to understand the world D.Everyone will find out what he or she is good at第二卷(非选择题 65分).单词拼写1.One of his a________is to become President of the Motor General.2.Here is a letter a________from DEAR ABBY, Philadelphia Bulletin, March 9,1937. 3.An a________water supply for city people is already a problem no government can take lightly.4.This new invention will bring you great________(利润)like a gold mine. 5.This toy is not s________for young children, because it is very dangerous. 6.The remote desert is______(可达到的)only by helicopter.7.This tax should be a________because it is unfair.8.He offered me practical________(援助)with my research.9.They are drinking c______. I am writing to ask you to consider the right of the disabled for easy access. In particular, I would like you to consider the following things:1. Access to the supermarket for people in wheelchairs and those who have difficulty walking. The lifts should be wide enough for the wheelchairs to move around. The entrance should be suitable for wheelchairs on the ground floor. There should be special entry for people for the blind.2. Toilets. There should be special toilets for the disabled. The bathrooms and toilets should have doorways wide enough for a wheelchair, doors that are easy to open and close, and hand-holds that the disabled can easily use.3. Telephones should be easy for a person in a wheelchair to reach. Generally speaking,a supermarket is so big that it is difficult for one, especially one in a wheelchair to find what one needs. So telephones should be easy to reach for a person in a wheelchair so that he can call the staff for help.4. Shelves. When people design the shelves, the disabled should be taken into consideration. Safety should e first.Thank you for reading my letter. I hope you will consider my suggestions. Disabled people should have the same opportunity as able-bodied people to enjoy the supermarket and they should be able to do so with dignity. It is very important to use various forms oftechnology which can assist individuals with various types of disabilities to increase their mobility and independence. I am sure if you design it with good access for the disabled, the supermarket will attract more customers and people will speak highly of your design.Yours sincerely,Sunlei探究案一、汉译英1.赶公交车后上气不接下气。

高中英语 Unit 1 Living well 1 Section Ⅰ Warming Up Re

Section Ⅰ Warming Up & Reading—ComprehendingⅠ阅读理解AYouth sports have become a big business in the UnitedStates, and have taken on a much more professionalized formover the past decade. In previous generations, children spenta large part of their leisure time playing throughout theirneighborhoods. Today’s children, on average, are spending much less time on unstructured settings and much more time on activities arranged by adults. In a new study, we asked 100 undergraduate and graduate students to complete a very detailed “childhood leisure activities survey〞, which asked them to reflect on hours spent in various leisure activities during their schoolage years. We also asked these same participants to complete the Abbreviated Torrance Test for Adults (ATTA), a widelyused creativity test that required them to draw and write in four creative activities. We then analyzed the relationship between the participants’childhood leisure activities and their performance on the ATTA.We found that informal sports played in unstructured, unsupervised(无人监视的) environments have many notable elements. These environments offer children the freedom to selfgovern, create rules, solve problems and deal with social conflicts on their own terms. Organized sports, on the other hand, tend to focus on obedience, learning from models, and a number of other qualities that would be unlikely to be beneficial to creative development. In fact, those with “aboveaverage〞 creativity reported spending 15% of their total childhood leisure time playing informal sports versus 13% playing organized sports. The participants with “belowaverage〞 creativity spent only 10% of their childhood leisure time playing informal sports versus 22% on organized sports. The difference is encouraging. It suggests that parents interested in developing the creativity of children don’t have to necessarily quit traditional organizedsports. They simply need to be aware of the importance of a balanced distribution(分配) of their children’s time between organized and unstructured settings.【解题导语】本文是一篇说明文。

背景材料:San FranciscoSan Francisco, open your Golden Gate, sang the girl in the theatre. She never finished her song. The date was 18th April, 1906. The earth shook and the roof suddenly divided, buildings crashed to the ground and people rushed out into the streets. The dreadful earthquake destroyed the city that had grown up whe n men discovered gold in the deserts of California. But today the streets of San Francisco stretch over more than forty steep hills, rising like huge cliffs above the blue waters of the Pacific Ocean. The best way to see this splendid city, where Spanish people were the first to make their homes, is to take one of the old cable cars which run along the nine main avenues. Fares are cheap; they have not risen, I'm told, for almost a hundred years. You leave the palm trees in Union Square --- the heart of San Francisco --- and from the shop signs and the faces around you, you will notice that in the city live people from many nations --- Austrians, Italians, Chinese and others --- giving each part a special character. More Chinese live in China Town than in any other part of the world outside China. Here, with Chinese restaurants, Chinese post-boxes, and even odd telephone-boxes that look like pagodas, it is easy to feel you are in China itself.Fisherman's Wharf, a place all foreigners want to see, is at the end of the ride. You get out, pause perhaps to help the other travellers to swing the cable car onits turntable (a city custom), and then set out to find a table in one of the gaylittle restaurants beside the harbour. As you enjoy the fresh Pacific sea food youcan admire the bright red paint of the Golden Gate Bridge in the harbour and watchthe traffic crossing beneath the tall towers on its way to the pretty village of Tiberon. When you've finished your meal, you may decide to take aboat-trip aroundthe bay to look at the sights. You can stare, for example, at the famous, now empty, prison of Alcatraz. Then why not go to the fishing village of Sansalito --- a littlelike London's Chelsea or New York's Greenwich Village --- to see people paintingand to look at their pictures. You will be able to enjoy a view of the city fromthe sea and take pleasure in the soft red and blue Spanish-type houses shining inthe bright Pacific light. If you have time you might like to go by bus to Carmel,a hundred miles south of San Francisco, where you will discover a wild and wonderful coast with high cliffs.写作训练假如你是李红。
