On Thursday I had to decide what I wanted to do over the weekend. For school was starting in two weeks, and I wanted to go skiing. But I had spent most of my money, so I couldn’t travel out of town. I might go to a movie. Or I might just listen to music. And that was what I ended up doing-listening to music.

A human being in deep thought is an uninspiring sight. He leans back in his chair, props up his feet, and puffs on his pipe and stares into space. He gives every appearance of wasting time. Besides, he’s leaving all hard the work for us! We wish he would get up and do something useful –clean the house, maybe, or mow the lawn. Our resentment is natural.

A Fellow Student It was my first day at the university. I walked into the building where I was going to live, and looked at door after door for my name. At last I found it. In the room there was already a student making his bed. • After we said “ How do you do” to each other, he continued his work, paying no more attention to me. “What a stuck-up fellow,” I thought. I examined the room. It was not different in the fittings and furnishings from any other room I had seen, but it had been thoroughly cleaned—by my new roommate, no doubt.

优选Description英文写作
❖ A description essay is generally developed through sensory details, or the impressions of one’s senses---sight, hearing, taste, smell, and touch, etc.
Description
❖ Description is the type of writing that helps the reader to see what someone/some place/something is like.
❖ Or we may say description is painting a picture in words of a person, place, object, or scene.
General and Specific Words for Good Description
❖ General: It is often windy and dusty here in spring. Specific: In spring there is often a very strong northwest wind. It carries so much fine dust with it that sometimes the sun becomes obscure. There is no escape from the fine dust; it gets into your eyes, your ears, your nostrils, and your hair. It goes through the cracks of closed windows and covers your desks and chairs.

Imagine a restaurant where your every whim is catered to, your every want satisfied, your every request granted without hesitation. The people on staff live to please you. They hover over you anxiously as you sample your selection, waiting for your judgment. Your pleasure is their delight, your dissatisfaction their dismay. Lou’s isn’t that kind of place.

costumers?
Pro essay- example 3
“Maaaaakeee someone happy… Make-makemaaakeeee someone happy,” he croons as he lifts the steaming pot that has infused the room with the rich aroma of freshly brewed coffee. He carries it to the woman’s table, fills her cup, and drops two single-serving containers of half and half nearby. Sight___ Sound___ Taste__ Smell__ Touch___

4.3 Use Specific and Vivid Language
One of the basic rules of composition is to be as specific as possible-if we want to impress the reader. Apparently, the more specific the words and expressions we use, the clearer the picture will be. Specifically, we should try to enable the reader to see, hear, feel, smell, or taste what is being described and to use specific and vivid expressions that appeal to the sense and provoke the reader’s imagination.
4.4 Emphasize the Theme in the Conclusion
The conclusion should not be a simple repetition of what is said earlier because that would not be able to strengthen the impression of the composition on the reader. A good writer usually ends a description by emphasizing the theme again with a new turn of thought. The following are different endings for a description of an 8:00 a.m. class:

Feature
• Blended descriptions seek to enliven factual detail, to put a human face on statistics. • Blended descriptions generally avoid long blocks of dry facts or highly sensational images. • Blended descriptions are effective in reaching a mass audience.
1. Objective Description & Subjective Description
• A. Objective description focuses on facts, statistics, observable details. Textbooks, encyclopedias, training manuals, business reports, and government publications include objective description. Objective description avoids emotion, sensationalism, or subjective interpretation:
III. Types of Writing
Description
I. What Is Description?
• Description captures impressions of persons, places, objects, or ideas. It records what you see, hear, taste, touch, feel. Description is probably the most basic task writers face. Whether you are writing a short story, a term paper, or a sales proposal, much of your success as a writer will depend on your ability to provide readers with detailed descriptions.

Introduction
• Description can be found in almost any kind of writing: history books, scientific articles, magazine advertisements, character sketches, novels, geography books, etc. It may be used as an end in itself but can also serve other purposes: usually combined with narration or exposition, making it more lively, colorful and exciting. • In descriptive compositions, one describes what is seen or what would be seen (shapes, colors, positions and relationships of people, objects, or scenes) with an aim to convey to the reader what something looks like by painting a picture with words.
Remarks:
My fellow roommate is a very hardworking and warm-hearted guy though he comes from a poor family of countryside.

Description of a person
• In describing a person, the writer should not merely give details of his appearance. He should try to reveal the person’s character, thoughts, and feelings, which may be shown in what the person does and says, or in how he behaves to others. And it is important to grasp the characteristic features that distinguish him from all other people. Those features that he shares with others can be omitted. Peculiarities and traits of a person, if any, should be included in the description, for they usually impress the reader deeply and give life to the person described.
Dominant Impression
• As shown in the samples, descriptive writing often focuses on a single point or emphasizes a dominant impression. Linked closely to the purpose, the dominant impression derives from a pattern of well-chosen details. When describing a person, you add up the details derived from your senses and form one central impression of that person; and when describing a place, you also gather details ro from a central impression—an atmosphere, or a mood.

The coat was too short and the trousers too loose. And he wore a pair of rubber shoes, which were very unfashionable. He did not look like a smart freshman at all. “ A yokel,” I concluded.

too short and the trousers too loose. And he wore a pair of rubber
shoes, which were very unfashionable. • Words: 1) “ How do you do” , 2) The second time he spoke, his accent told me that he was from the south. “ Shall I help you to get your luggage from the office?” • Behavior: 1) it had been thoroughly cleaned—by my new roommate; 2) He was quick in movement. He walked out of the room and was soon far ahead of me in the corridor.
