Oracle Spatial

Managing Oracle Cloud With Enterprise Manager EXECUTIVE SUMMARYO R A C L E W H I T E P A P E R|D E C E M B E R2015Executive SummaryCloud computing is a significant advancement in the delivery of information technology and services. Oracle defines Cloud computing as a style of computing based on shared, elastic resources delivered to users in a self-service, metered manner using Web technologies. Yet, if you ask five people “what is cloud computing?” you can expect five different answers. Why? Because what matters to them is not what Cloud computing is, but what it does for them. Efficient Cloud management empowers Oracle Cloud to help organizations drive innovation and business transformation by increasing business agility, lowering costs, and reducing IT complexity.Traditionally deployments require applications to be bound to a particular infrastructure. This results in low utilization, diminished efficiency, and inflexibility. Cloud brings in capabilities to allow applications to be dynamically deployed onto the appropriate infrastructure at runtime. While C loud’s elastic aspect allows applications to scale and grow on demand without needing traditional patches or upgrades, the Cloud itself requires continual capacity checks.IT departments and infrastructure providers are under increasing pressure to provide computing infrastructure at the lowest possible cost. To do this, the concepts of resource pooling, virtualization, dynamic provisioning, utility and commodity computing could be leveraged within a public Cloud or create a private Cloud that meets these needs. Customers driven by concerns over security, regulatory compliance, control over Quality of Service (QoS), and long-term costs, will build internal private Clouds. Private Clouds allow internal IT providers and application development team greater control of data security to meet their governance regulations. There are also a growing number of public Cloud providers that are looking for ways to build a versatile Cloud Infrastructure to support their clientele. However, as the technology matures and these concerns ease, we will see more customers adopting a hybrid Cloud model that makes use of both private and public Clouds using the most suitable of the hybrid strategies. Whether it is the pubic cloud, the private cloud or the hybrid cloud, a cloud’s successful management involves standardizatio n, integration, risk management and automation.Oracle Cloud, industry’s broadest and most integrated public cloud, offers best-in-class services across software as a service (SaaS), platform as a service (PaaS), infrastructure as a service (IaaS), and data as a service (DaaS). Enterprise Manager, Oracle’s flagship Systems and Applications Management product, is used to provide 24x7 management of Oracle Cloud to ensure 99.99% availability of Cloud Services. Enterprise Managerprovides an overview of tenant cloud usage, service availability, health of service and service infrastructure on Service Dashboards. It also provides incident and problem management, service life cycle management, gold standards for service configuration, compliance scoring of service/infrastructure vis-à-vis CPU patches and STIG compliance. Additionally operational tasks like management of security certificates and password expiry, monitoring cloud accessmanagement and Oracle Cloud service provisioning are automated for Cloud Agility using Enterprise Manager restful APIs and Jython EMCLI.A Cloud solution portfolio that illustrates the following characteristics requires the stringent compliance to standards and complete automation provided by Enterprise Manager:A tenant user gets just a simple portfolio of business application cloud services presented in unified environment providing flexible cloud infrastructure whilst Enterprise Manager obscures the complexity of managing the powerful standards-based cloud platform in 19 worldwide tier 4datacenters.∙ A broad spectrum of business applications to support the core business processes and operations. Examples include Sales, Marketing, Financials, Human Capital Management, and Supply Chain Management.∙Platforms and frameworks to develop and run custom processes, applications, and integration components.∙Reliable and highly available infrastructure components to support the quality of service requirements of the business.∙Capabilities to support the build-time and runtime Cloud management operations including business management, operations management, model management, orchestration, provisioning, security and policy management.∙Choice of architecture in terms of deployment and engineering. Deployment choices should include on-premises and off-premise deployment models..Operational ManagementEnterprise Manager has reduced administration and operational management costs by at least 35% for Oracle Cloudops (Cloud Operations team) besides increasing productivity, improving collaboration and simplifying proactive Cloud management. The use of Enterprise Manager in Oracle Cloud management can be briefly categorized as follows:»Service Availability Management»Application Performance Management»Cloud Security, Standardization & Risk Management»Service Lifecycle Management»Cloud AutomationService Availability ManagementEnterprise Manager provides comprehensive, robust and integrated monitoring of diverse Oracle Cloud assets - from applications to middleware, database, operating systems and hypervisors to hardware components; rolled up as services. It also provides tenants with visibility into all the activity in their accounts, by service, for optimum usage, availability and application performance. Service Dashboards and Reports present SLA breakdowns to executive, devops and CloudOps line management, with drill downs to specifics of a service outage.Application Performance ManagementOracle Cloud provides the best service levels for Cloud applications through business-driven application management using Enterprise Manager. Daily reports chart varied business metric trends for CloudOps to proactively catch anomalies like latency increases by a millisecond, or Identity Management (IDM) account creation has increased 20%. Real User Experience (RUEI) complements infrastructure monitoring with measurements of the actual application usage and response, as experienced by the end user for issue analysis and usage tracking. Service beacons are defined to perform synthetic tests of some basic transaction flows to ascertain service availability and performance. Performance issue diagnosis is performed using WebLogic Server and Database diagnostic interfaces with drill downs to poor-performing SQL or Java code.Cloud Security, Standardization & Risk ManagementConfiguration compliance is an important aspect of managing the Cloud. Most security breaches happen owing to faulty configuration such as default passwords, relaxed file permissions, an open port or an old techstack. Compliance inherently demands certain disciplines be submerged in the entropy of Cloud. To manage compliance, Oracle Cloud administrators have created gold Service baselines and gather configuration collections in Enterprise Manager for Oracle Cloud Services. Any deviations from the baselines triggers compliance violation notifications to be addressed to mitigate risk. Compliance scores for CPU patches and STIG standards are used to prioirtize compliance projects targeted to mitigate risk.Service Lifecycle ManagementEnterprise Manager has a complete cloud lifecycle management solution to quickly set up, manage and support Oracle Cloud Services. Incident management, Problem Management, Change Management and day-to-day operational tasks of SaaS and PaaS services are performed in Enterprise Manager. Cloudops manage Cloud scale by managing exceptions reported in daily/weekly reports like “Configuration dr ifts from standard Service GoldI mage”, “Service Pod Health Check Reports”, “Service SMTP health check”, “Patch Status of Services”, “Service Diagnosis reports”, “Password Randomization Jobs”, “Upgrade/Patch Logs Analysis”, “Business Metric s trend charting” etc.Cloud AutomationLike any enterprise cloud, Oracle Cloud is managed by total automation. From service provisioning, service maintenance to service sale out, all service lifecycle management tasks are automated. Oracle Cloud administrators make extensive use of Enterprise Manager extensibilities like EMCLI, metric extensions, the Job system, dynamic procedures and configuration extensions for large-scale operations on thousands of tenantservices. Cloud operations like “Service DR setup” or “S cale-up WebLogic cluster” or “E nable synthetic monitoring on a Service” are all orchesterated through Enterprise Manager.ConclusionOracle Cloud is efficiently managed by Enterprise Manager, which provides complete, integrated and business-driven enterprise Cloud management solution. Enterprise Manager scales to manage:»Thousands of concurrent self-service users»Tens of thousands of tenants, 25 million users»Hundreds of thousands service instances»7 Million+ infrastructure targets» 2 Million + automation job executions per day»11 Million+ Synthetic tests per day» 3 Million+ events processed/day»Tens of thousands of Compliance Evaluations per day»Five-Nine (99.999%) availability»Full disaster recoveryReferences1.

Oracle Exadata X8

Wherever Oracle Databases Live and However They Are Consumed, Exadata X8 Delivers Performance in a League of Its OwnBy Mark Peters, Principal Analyst & Practice DirectorJune 2019This ESG White Paper was commissioned by Oracleand is distributed under license from ESG.™Oracle Databases Achieve Unprecedented Speed Running on the New Exadata Database Machine X8 White PaperContentsIntroduction and Executive Summary (3)Databases: Their Market and Their Varied, Voracious Data Demands (3)The Essence of Exadata, X8, and Cloud-enhancement as Desired (5)The Bigger Truth (7)Introduction and Executive SummaryMany things in IT are talked about a lot just because they have to be, while other things are talked about very little because they cannot be. As examples: There are lengthy written guides and web communities based on myriad approaches to system integration because (let’s face it) a lot of IT over many decades has been about trying to make operational round pegs fit application square holes. On the flip side, “unique” is a word that is eschewed by pretty much everyone except for vendor marketing departments because (let’s face this, too) there’s a lot of similarity across many capabilities from much of the vendor community. The journey may vary a tad, but the destination is often similar.Oracle Exadata Database Machine has now stood for a full decade in stark contrast to both these “norms.” As an Oracle Engineered System, the need to talk about integration is essentially precluded; the same engineers who build Oracle Database also ensure the Exadata is a seamless place to run the software. Control of all the IP means Oracle has a controlled and predictable environment in which to run its Database on Exadata, which in turn means it can deliver features that bring additional business value to its customers and enable them to obtain additional operational benefits and financial payback from their Oracle Database investment. And that’s it in a nutshell: Oracle’s justifiable claim to be providing, with Exadata, the best platform for Oracle Database is derived from it having the same DNA across both elements. That commonality helps make it economically attractive, scalable, and secure. It also generates the contrast that Oracle fairly enjoys making when comparing Oracle Database running on Exadata to Oracle Database running on any other vendor’s equipment; the others are constrained to essentially treat Oracle Database like any other application sitting on a VM or running as a process on generic hardware. Exadata delivers incremental business value when combined with Oracle Database, whether in the cloud or on-premises. The arrival of Exadata X8 provides yet another positive turn of the specification—and hence, value—screw, while Exadata turning ten years old is a timely reminder to review the power of the platform in general. It’s a power borne by suitability; and to appreciate that suitability, a quick reminder of the database market and its data needs is warranted. Databases: Their Market and Their Varied, Voracious Data DemandsThe Database MarketDatabases have long served as the lifeline of crucial business applications, and thus are often a foundation of businesses. Contemporary IT—and the world as we understand it—could not function without databases. But exponential data growth, the need to support more database workloads, and the resulting database sprawl have created significant challenges for IT organizations…challenges that are now complicated and extended by the arrival of multiple iterations of the cloud. With most organizations having mandates to adopt the cloud to some extent—database workloads are no exception—they should look to a partner that can not only meet their on-premises requirements, but also provide a path to a cloud that best fits their needs. And for many, getting an identical user and operational experience would be perfect. Moreover, as much as the IT environment has changed, so have the databases themselves…such as Oracle’s latest 19c iteration. These are not the databases of past generations, and so you wouldn’t want to use obsolete approaches of the past to serve them their lifeblood (i.e., data).Database Data: Proliferation, Demands…and the CloudManaging data growth and database size are far and away the greatest challenges organizations face in their current database environments, cited by 48% of respondents in ESG research (see Figure 1).1 Other key aspects of contemporary database environments include:1 Source: ESG Survey, Enterprise Database Trends, January 2017. All ESG research references and charts in this white paper have been taken from this survey, unless otherwise noted.• Additional top challenges are database performance, supporting databases in cloud environments, and the drive for ever-better security and compliance. This is not a pick-and-mix list; users need solutions to all of these problems from their chosen vendor.• If organizations had only one database, life would certainly be easier; but ESG research shows 55% of organizations have more than 25 databases in production, and having hundreds is not at all rare (see Figure 2). These tools support everything from transactional and analytical workloads to the latest machine learning applications, and they can be running everywhere from on-premises through “cloud-adjacent” environments to the cloud.• Often databases are siloed (with their own infrastructure), which compounds the management complexity and leads to inefficient utilization of hardware and software investments.• Maintaining multiple independent environments results in complex and growing security controls/policies, access needs/rules, and patching requirements, and this only adds to the management headaches IT organizations areforced to either suffer through or try to address.Figure 1. Challenges with Database Environment and Supporting InfrastructureSource: Enterprise Strategy Group48%We do not have any challenges Lack of skilled staffCreating test/development environmentsProvisioning infrastructure on-premisesPatch, maintenance and version update processesSupporting new applications and/or usersMeeting security/compliance requirementsSupporting databases in cloud environmentsMeeting database performance requirementsManaging data growth and database sizeIn general, which of the following challenges does your organization have with its current database environment and supporting infrastructure? (Percent of respondents, N=354, three responses accepted)Figure 2. Number of Production Databases DeployedSource: Enterprise Strategy GroupThe sum of the above—complexity and database iteration combined with data growth and the need to share it across and between organizations—is driving a need for consolidation. When ESG last investigated this, 50% of organizations were already consolidating databases, with another 25% planning on it. That consolidation in turn means DBAs must merge multiple workloads onto a given infrastructure, invariably creating more performance issues to be addressed. And this is all before adding in the operational curve ball of the cloud! Database provisioning and consolidation exercises increasingly must acknowledge that the right platform can change over time. Not surprisingly, ESG’s research has found that when evaluating and selecting databases, the most important attributes are that the database be capable of being cloud-based and include the ability to easily scale up and/or down as workloads demand.2The Essence of Exadata, X8, and Cloud-enhancement as DesiredGood news comes in the shape of the “Oracle on Oracle and for Oracle” solution: Exadata. Its value proposition is a piece of cake to convey: It is an optimized platform on which to run Oracle Database. While Oracle Database can run on myriad other systems, the optimal experience is running it on Exadata. It is an Oracle Engineered System that is tuned to be best for Oracle Database and integrates unique value-add features that are unavailable from other vendors. As such, it is not general purpose, nor simply fit-for-purpose: It is purpose-built. Over its decade in the market, Exadata has grown as the—identical everywhere—foundation for on-premises, Oracle Cloud, and Oracle Autonomous Database operations. The company states that Exadata is run by 77% of the Fortune Global 100 (25% of which have also adopted Exadata Cloud Service). This paper is not designed to provide extensive technical details, but suffice it to say Exadata is an ideal database platform that combines scale-out, database-optimized compute, networking, and storage hardware (to deliver both performance and economy) with smart software in the form of both specialized algorithms that can vastly improve all aspects of 2 Source: ESG Brief, Database Purchase Criteria , June 2017.17%Less than 5 5 to 1011 to 2526 to 5051 to 7576 to 100101 to 150151 to 200More than 200Don’t know How many production databases does your organization currently have deployed? (Percent of respondents, N=354)database processing, as well as automated management to optimally handle configuration, updates, and performance.3 Better yet, all the above is true across all workloads, whether they are petabyte-scale data warehouses or business-crucial OLTP applications, and whether they are traditional business applications or next-generation analytics and machine learning. Organizations can confidently consolidate their Oracle Databases and associated workloads onto a single platform born on-premises and then extend to some, or full, public cloud consumption options if desired. With Exadata, Oracle is allowing its users to deliver against the common (but also not commonly well-defined or stable) mandate to leverage the cloud by providing paths to deploy cloud operating models ranging from optimizing on-premises infrastructure before moving to the public cloud,4 through utilizing an on-premises cloud service (Oracle Cloud at Customer) that provides a public cloud experience but with the security and control of an on-premises environment, to a Cloud Adjacent offering,5 and all the way to a public cloud deployment with Exadata Cloud Service or Autonomous Database.Exadata X8As with Exadata in general, this paper is not the place to conduct a lengthy exposition of the new Exadata X8. A few headlines serve to convey the arrival of not only dramatic specification improvements, but also some key functionality:•Speed—Scale-out servers use the improved clock-speed of the latest 24-core Intel processors, as well as NVMe flash, to help Exadata X8 deliver up to 560GB/sec I/O throughput and 6.57M OLTP read IOPS (with 3.5M IOPS at under 250 microseconds). For obvious reasons, Oracle encourages all its prospects to compare its throughput and speed with typical all-flash storage arrays.•Capacity—There are 40% higher capacity 14TB Helium disk drives (the highest capacity at which Oracle’s prerequisite availability targets can be achieved). Additionally, a new Storage Server X8-2 XT expansion unit delivers dramatically less expensive storage for less-accessed, older, or regulatory data, but with all the benefits of Oracle Database storage(e.g., Hybrid Columnar Compression,6 identical operations, and security/encryption). Think of this as seamlesslyconverging the data[base] in addition to converging the infrastructure.•Function—60% more cores in Exadata X8-2 Storage Servers help offload more Oracle Database processing and also improve security by mitigating threats such as “Spectre” and “Meltdown” in silicon, eliminating software overhead. Also, automated, cloud-scale, full-stack performance management and monitoring combines AI and years of real-world performance “triage experience” with best practices to automatically detect performance issues, proactively determine root causes, and address problems without human intervention.Exadata + Oracle Database: ‘Hand in Glove’ and Extended ValueWhile it is impressive and valuable to know about Exadata’s specifications or extensive HA features, what really sets it apart are over 60 Exadata-only features for Oracle Database, such as Fast Node and Cell Death Detection, Automatic ASM Mirror3 In patching alone, for example, organizations can use Exadata to drastically reduce the number of patches. Oracle’s website details a $200B retailer that has reduced its patches 95% p.a. This enabled its IT group to improve productivity, while allowing its DBAs to more easily ensure their infrastructure was up to date and reduce risk.4 The cloud alliance announced in June 2019 between Oracle and Microsoft further demonstrates Oracle’s determination to be a key element in the public cloud world, while acknowledging that it will play to its strengths (such as high-performance Oracle Database) and allow customers to utilize the value of other mega-clouds as appropriate.5 This offering is outlined in the ESG White Paper, The Business Advantages of Cloud Adjacent Oracle Databases on Exadata, published March 2019.6 Hybrid Columnar Compression is an approach to database data compression that utilizes both the database and storage capabilities of Exadata to significantly reduce Oracle Database capacity requirements (10-15X is the norm). Less data handled also improves performance.Reads on IO Error Corruption, Automatic Statistics, and many more. It’s a veritable smorgasbord of delights for IT operations and DBAs to use, which delivers unsurpassed—and genuine—value to Oracle Database users.Extensions to this unique hand-in-glove functionality have continued with the latest Exadata X8, most notably the machine learning that enables Automatic Indexing with Oracle Database 19c. A fully-automated capability based on technology from Oracle Autonomous Database (what Oracle refers to as a “self-driving database”), this improves database performance and eliminates manual index-tuning tasks for critical applications.7 This means that DBAs can simultaneously stop the manual task of creating indexes for applications running on Oracle Database, achieve faster performance, and gain time to focus on more strategic business objectives.Users can also use in-database machine learning without having to move any data. All the algorithms run inside Oracle Database—close to the data—which ensures no production impact. This delivers dramatic performance gains for actions such as the faster scoring and validating of models against the freshest production data. While Oracle can at times display a love for extreme detail, Exadata’s powerful core value makes that largely unnecessary. Simply, it is the most integrated, optimized, flexible, and capable place to run Oracle Databases, with a set of attributes that allow it to cost less, scale better, and be more secure than alternatives. As such, it has become a foundation for Oracle Autonomous Database and Oracle SaaS applications, and the architecturally equivalent stepping stone to Oracle Cloud. The Bigger TruthWhile the term “no brainer” is a tad simplistic and can overlook relevant adjacent factors, it is clear that unique capabilities and user-value are available with Oracle Exadata when it’s used in concert with Oracle Database. That means any Oracle Database user not utilizing Exadata is missing out on some or all of those capabilities and value. As Exadata X8 heralds the second decade for this offering, it has increased its deployment choices alongside Oracle Database to mirror the increasingly hybrid cloud world, and thus offers a congruence of architecture, features, and security wherever and however it is deployed—on-premises or in the cloud. Oracle also continues to add impressive functionality that can translate to not only IT improvements, but also business value; a prime example being the machine learning in Oracle Database 19C to enable auto indexing with Exadata X8.Oracle is not famed for being shy in its own marketing claims; regarding the use of Exadata to run Oracle Database, it likes to say that the combination is “so smart that there’s no second place.” It would be easy to dismiss that as marketing bluster, but it actually deserves consideration; “second place” would suggest vendors competing at the same level…but really Oracle has put Exadata in a league of its own.7 Oracle reports a recent test in which 15 years of manual engineering were compared with what could be done in less than 24 hours with modern machine learning when the Automatic Indexing successfully created two-thirds the number of NetSuite application indexes and also increased database and application performance. All trademark names are property of their respective companies.

Oracle BP

An Ontological Approach to Oracle BPMJean Prater, Ralf Mueller, Bill BeauregardOracle Corporation, 500 Oracle Parkway, Redwood City, CA 94065, USA **********************,***********************,*****************************The Oracle Business Process Management (Oracle BPM) Suite is composed oftools for Business Analysts and Developers for the modeling of BusinessProcesses in BPMN 2.0 (OMG1 standard), Business Rules, Human Workflow,Complex Events, and many other tools. BPM operates using the commontenants of an underlying Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) runtimeinfrastructure based on the Service Component Architecture (SCA). OracleDatabase Semantic Technologies provides native storage, querying andinferencing that are compliant with W3C standards for semantic (RDF/OWL)data and ontologies, with scalability and security for enterprise-scale semanticapplications.Semantically-enabling all artifacts of BPM from the high-level design of aBusiness Process Diagram to the deployment and runtime model of a BPMapplication promotes continuous process refinement, enables comprehensiveimpact analysis and prevents unnecessary proliferation of processes andservices. This paper presents the Oracle BPM ontology based upon BPMN 2.0,Service Component Architecture (SCA) and the Web Ontology Language(OWL 2). The implementation of this ontology provides a wide range of usecases in the areas of Process Analysis, Governance, Business Intelligence andSystems Management. It also has the potential to bring together stakeholdersacross an Enterprise, for a true Agile End-to-End Enterprise Architecture.Example use cases are presented as well as an outlook of the evolution of theontology to cover the organizational and social aspects of Business ProcessManagement.1.IntroductionIn the 1968 film, 2001: A Space Odyssey, the movie’s antagonist, HAL, is a computer that is capable not only of speech, speech recognition, and natural language processing, but also lip reading, apparent art appreciation, interpreting and reproducing emotional behavior, reasoning, and playing chess, all while maintaining the systems on an interplanetary mission. While the solution we present in this paper does not possess all of the capabilities of HAL, the potential benefits of combining semantic technology with Oracle BPM provides the ability to define contextual relationships between business processes and provides the tools to use that context so that ‘software agents’ (programs working on behalf of people) can find the right1 Object Management Group, see 2 Jean Prater, Ralf Mueller, Bill Beauregardinformation or processes and make decisions based on the established contextual relationships.Organizations can more efficiently and effectively optimize their information technology resources through a service-oriented approach leveraging common business processes and semantics throughout their enterprise. The challenge, however, with applications built on Business Process Management (BPM) and Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) technology is that many are comprised of numerous artifacts spanning a wide range of representation formats. BPMN 2.0, the Service Component Architecture Assembly Model, Web Service definitions (in the form of WSDL), XSLT transformations, for example are all based on well defined but varying type models. To answer even simple queries on the entire BPM model, a user is left with a multitude of API’s and technologies, making the exercise difficult and highly complicated. Oracle has developed an ontology in OWL that encompasses all the artifacts of a BPM application and is stored in Oracle Database Semantic Technologies that provides a holistic view of the entire model and a unified and standardized way to query that model using SPARQL.Oracle is actively involved in the standards process and is leading industry efforts to use ontologies for metadata analysis. Oracle is also investigating the integration of organizational and social aspects of BPM using FOAF2. BPMN 2.0 task performers can be associated with a FOAF Person, Group or Organization and then used in Social Web activities to enable Business Users to collaborate on BPM models.1.1 BenefitsThe benefits of adding semantic technology to the database and to business process management in the middleware, driven by an underlying ontology are three fold:1.It promotes continuous process refinement. A less comprehensive processmodel can evolve into a complete executable process in the same model.2.It makes it easy to analyze the impact of adding, modifying or deletingprocesses and process building blocks on existing processes and webservices.3.It helps prevent unnecessary proliferation of processes and services. Combining semantic technology and business process management allows business users across organizational boundaries to find, share, and combine information and processes more easily by adding contextual relationships.1.2 Customer Use CaseThe US Department of Defense (DoD) is leading the way in the Federal Government for Architecture-driven Business Operations Transformation. A vital tenet for success is ensuring that business process models are based on a standardized representation, thus enabling the analysis and comparison of end to end business processes. This will lead to the reuse of the most efficient and effective process patterns (style guide), comprised of elements (primitives), throughout the DoD Business Mission Area. A key principle in DoD Business Transformation is its focus on data ontology. The 2 The Friend of a Friend (FOAF) project, see An Ontological Approach to Oracle BPM 3 Business Transformation Agency (BTA), under the purview of the Deputy Chief Management Officer (DCMO), has been at the forefront of efforts to develop a common vocabulary and processes in support of business enterprise interoperability through data standardization. The use of primitives and reuse of process patterns will reduce waste in overhead costs, process duplication and building and maintaining enterprise architectures. By aligning the Department of Defense Architecture Framework3 2.0 (DoDAF 2.0) with Business Process Modeling Notation 2.0 (BPMN 2.0) and partnering with industry, the BTA is accelerating the adoption of these standards to improve government business process efficiency.2.The Oracle BPM OntologyThe Oracle BPM ontology encompasses and expands the BPMN 2.0 and SCA ontologies. The Oracle BPM ontology is stored in Oracle Database Semantic Technologies and creates a composite model by establishing relationships between the OWL classes of the BPMN 2.0 ontology and the OWL classes of the SCA runtime ontology. For example, the BPMN 2.0 Process, User Task and Business Rule Task are mapped to components in the composite model. Send, Receive and Service Tasks, as well as Message Events are mapped to appropriate SCA Services and References and appropriate connections are created between the composite model artifacts. Figure 1 illustrates the anatomy of the Business Rule Task “Determine Approval Flow” that is a part of a Sales Quote demo delivered with BPM Suite.Figure 1: Anatomy of a BPMN 2.0 Business Rule Task4The diagram shows that the Business Rule Task “Determine Approval Flow” is of BPMN 2.0 type Business Rule Task and implemented by a SCA Decision Component that is connected to a BPMN Component “RequestQuote”. Also of significance is that the Decision Component exposes a Service that refers to a specific XML-Schema, which is also referred to by Data Objects in the BPMN 2.0 process RequestQuote.bpmn.3See /products/BEA_6.2/BEA/products/2009-04-27 Primitives Guidelines for Business Process Models (DoDAF OV-6c).pdf4 Visualized using TopBraid Composer TM4 Jean Prater, Ralf Mueller, Bill Beauregard3.An Ontology for BPMN 2.0With the release of the OMG BPMN 2.0 standard, a format based on XMI and XML-Schema was introduced for the Diagram Interchange (DI) and the Semantic Model. Based on the BPMN 2.0 Semantic Model, Oracle created an ontology that is comprised of the following5:•OWL classes and properties for all BPMN 2.0 Elements that are relevant for the Business Process Model.6The OWL classes, whenever possible, follow the conventions in the BPMN 2.0 UML meta model. OWL propertiesand restrictions are included by adding all of the data and object propertiesaccording to the attributes and class associations in the BPMN 2.0 model.7•OWL classes and properties for instantiations of a BPMN 2.0 process model. These OWL classes cover the runtime aspects of a BPMN 2.0process when executed by a process engine. The process engine createsBPMN 2.0 flow element instances when the process is executed. Activitylogging information is captured, including timestamps for a flow elementinstance’s activation and completion, as well as the performer of the task. The implicit (unstated) relationships in the Oracle BPM ontology can be automatically discovered using the native inferencing engine included with Oracle Database Semantic Technologies. The explicit and implicit relationships in the ontology can be queried using Oracle Database Semantic Technologies support for SPARQL (patterns matching queries) and/or mixed SPARQL in SQL queries. [6] Example SPARQL queries are shown below:Select all User Tasks in all Lanesselect ?usertask ?lanewhere {usertask rdf:type bpmn:UserTask .usertask bpmn:inLane lane}Select all flow elements with their sequence flow in lane p1:MyLane (a concrete instance of RDF type bpmn:Lane)select ?source ?targetwhere {flow bpmn:sourceFlowElement source .flow bpmn:targetFlowElement target .5 All of the classes of the BPMN 2.0 meta model that exists for technical reasons only (model m:n relationship or special containments) are not represented in the ontology6 The work in [2] describes an ontology based on BPMN 1.x for which no standardized meta model exists7 Oracle formulated SPARQL queries for envisioned use cases and added additional properties and restrictions to the ontology to support those use casesAn Ontological Approach to Oracle BPM 5 target bpmn:inLane p1:MyLane}Select all activities in process p1:MyProcess that satisfy SLA p1:MySLA select ?activity ?activityInstancewhere {activity bpmn:inProcess p1:MyProcess .activityInstance obpm:instanceOf activity .activityInstance obpm:meetSLA p1:MySLA}A unique capability of BPMN 2.0, as compared to BPEL, for instance, is its ability to promote continuous process refinement. A less comprehensive process model, perhaps created by a business analyst can evolve into a complete executable process that can be implemented by IT in the same model. The work sited in Validating Process Refinement with Ontologies[4] suggests an ontological approach for the validation of such process refinements.4.An Ontology for the SCA composite modelThe SCA composite model ontology represents the SCA assembly model and is comprised of OWL classes for Composite, Component, Service, Reference and Wire, which form the major building blocks of the assembly model. Oracle BPM ontology has OWL classes for concrete services specified by WSDL and data structures specified by XML-Schema. The transformation of the SCA assembly model to the SCA ontology includes creating finer grained WSDL and XML-Schema artifacts to capture the dependencies and relationships between concrete WSDL operations and messages to elements of some XML-Schema and their imported schemata. The SCA ontology was primarily created for the purpose of Governance and to act as a bridge between the Oracle BPM ontology and an ontology that would represent a concrete runtime infrastructure. This enables the important ability to perform impact analysis to determine, for instance, which BPMN 2.0 data objects and/or data associations are impacted by the modification of an XML-Schema element or which Web Service depends on this element. This feature helps prevent the proliferation of new types and services, and allows IT to ascertain the impact of an XML-Schema modification.5.The TechnologiesAs part of the customer use case, as referenced in section 1.2 above, we implemented a system that takes a BPM Project comprised of BPMN 2.0 process definitions, SCA assembly model, WSDL service definitions, XML-Schema and other metadata, and created appropriate Semantic data (RDF triples) for the Oracle BPM ontology. The6 Jean Prater, Ralf Mueller, Bill Beauregardtriples were then loaded into Oracle Database Semantic Technologies [3] and a SPARQL endpoint was used to except and process queries.6.ConclusionOracle BPM ontology encompasses and expands the generic ontologies for BPMN 2.0 and the SOA composite model to cover all artifacts of a BPM application from a potentially underspecified8process model in BPMN 2.0 down to the XML-Schema element and type level at runtime for process analysis, governance and Business Intelligence. The combination of RDF/OWL data storage, inferencing and SPARQL querying, as supported by Oracle Database Semantic Technologies, provides the ability to discover implicit relationships in data and find implicit and explicit relationships with pattern matching queries that go beyond classical approaches of XML-Schema, XQuery and SQL.7.AcknowledgementsWe’d like to thank Sudeer Bhoja, Linus Chow, Xavier Lopez, Bhagat Nainani and Zhe Wu for their contributions to the paper and valuable comments.8.References[1] Business Process Model and Notation (BPMN) Version 2.0,/spec/BPMN/2.0/[2] Ghidini Ch., Rospocher M., Serafini L.: BPMN Ontology,https://dkm.fbk.eu/index.php/BPMN_Ontology[3] Oracle Database Semantic Technologies,/technetwork/database/options/semantic-tech/[4] Ren Y., Groener G., Lemcke J., Tirdad R., Friesen A., Yuting Z., Pan J., Staab S.:Validating Process Refinement with Ontologies[5] Service Component Architecture (SCA), [6] Kolovski V., Wu Z., Eadon G.: Optimizing Enterprise-Scale OWL 2 RL Reasoning in aRelational Database System, ISWC 2010, page 436-452[7] “Use of End-toEnd (E2E) Business Models and Ontology in DoD Business Architectures”;Memorandum from Deputy Chief Management Office; April 4, 2011, Elizabeth A.McGrath, Deputy DCMO.[8] “Primitives and Style: A Common Vocabulary for BPM across the Enterprise”; DennisWisnosky, Chief Architect & CTO ODCMO and Linus Chow Oracle; BPM Excellence in Practice 2010; Published by Future Strategies, 20108A BPMN 2.0 model element is considered underspecified, if its valid but not all attribute values relevant for execution are specified.。

User Interface Design using Oracle Web Forms
Designing human task user interfaces is just as important as the process definition itself and requires considerable business involvement. The newly introduced Oracle Web Forms component inside Oracle BPM Process Composer allows business users to easily create rich, dynamic, user interfaces for their business processes by dragging and dropping controls from the UI palette. The Oracle Web Forms is based on HTML 5 and AJAX technologies and comes with wide variety of pre-packaged controls such as Date, Money, Phone and Email. It allows grouping of controls in a wide variety of ways such as collapsible sections, tabs, multiple columns etc and easily supports handling repeating items. It provides dynamic behavior via Web Form Rules (Java Script) for computed values, for disabling/enabling UI controls and for performing validations. It can integrate with databases and other backend systems via REST mechanisms. At any point in time, the business user can preview or test the form in a stand-alone fashion.

Introive for any IT organization is to create software applications and a database infrastructure that can scale to meet growing and changing business needs. With business processes increasingly migrating to digital transactions, there is a growing organizational reliance and dependence on the IT group’s ability to handle larger volumes of data and users, with less system downtime. Active-active configurations provide significant performance and scalability benefits; deliver exceptional high-availability; and enable continuous operations for not only unplanned interruptions but also planned outages such as migrations, upgrades, and systems maintenance. In most cases, active-active configurations are considered to be part of a continuous availability—not a disaster recovery—plan. At the high end of traditional disaster recovery plans, there are solutions that offer an active-passive configuration where the active system assumes all the workload, but when it fails, the passive system becomes active and assumes the full workload. Under normal operating conditions, the secondary

Oracle BPM

Oracle BPM

Oracle BPM
