It is just that the plan they carry in their mind’s eye is too precise, too stupendous and too perfect to be achieved in this world or the next. They aim too high and wide. They save everything, planning someday to file and order. When they finally set about handling things, sloppy people just can’t bear to part with anything. After hours of work, the place looks exactly the same, so sloppy people never get neat.Neat people place neatness above everything else. They like results and don’t care about process. They have cavalier attitudes toward possessions. If anything collects dust, it’s got to go they are incredibly wasteful. Anything that is not of immediate use goes into the trash. They are insensitive and there is no sentimental salvaging of birthday cards or the last letter a dying relative ever wrote. Neat people operate on two unvarying principles: Never handle any item twice, and throw everything away. Therefore, the only thing messy in a neat person’s house is the trash can. Thus, neat people are lazier and meaner than sloppy people. the distinction between them is moral.WritingSample EssayNeat Students vs. Sloppy StudentsSome students can be described as “sloppy”and some as “neat.”In my opinion, the difference between these two types of students mainly lies in their attitudes towards study.Sloppy students tend to lack motivation. For them, attending college is but a life experience and they take it for granted. Contented with a “pass”for all the courses they take, they never exert themselves to achieve academic excellence, for what they are after is just that piece of paper called a diploma. However, they never give a thought to what they might do with it after graduation. Neat students are goal-oriented. They know who they are, what they want and how they can, make the best use of their time. They set “little goals” on a daily basis and work their way towards a bigger and loftier goal in life.Sloppy students are passive and sluggish in class. They normally choose to sit either in the very last row or at the corner beside the door, trying hard to avoid the instructor’s attention. For them, no class is interesting and every instructor is boring. Yet, they are extremely alert to what isgoing on outside the classroom. Sometimes they do fix their eyes on the board but their minds are wandering in Never-Never Land, while at other times they just indulge in sleeping in class. Neat students are full of drive in class, for they regard each lecture as a source of knowledge. They have self-discipline and spare no effort to involve themselves in discussions and presentations. For them, learning happens with each lecture they attend.Sloppy students, as always, turn in sloppy work. Their paper are invariable in a muddle. If the instructor asks them to read forty pages after class, they will probably read fourteen pages at most; if they are asked to write a paper of five hundred words, they will cut the number by half. And they never feel ashamed with a mere “pass”—probably the only “pass”in the whole class—for the course. Neat students stick to their schedule and are enthusiastic about their studies both in and out of class. They give loving attention to every detail when doing homework, from cross-checking a figure to modifying a punctuation mark. Needless to say, they turn in neat work.We should not judge a person only by his or her appearance just as we cannot judge a book by its cover. A sloppy student may be neatly dressed while a neat student may be a sloppy dresser. That makes them different is their attitudes towards work.。

新世纪大学英语综合教程第六册U1-U3cloze答案

新世纪大学英语综合教程第六册U1-U3cloze答案Unit 1Online teaching ,a relatively recent instructional medium,is becoming more and more popular. At the same time, however, it has brought a lot of challenges to teachers who are used to giving traditional lectures. First of all, there is the challenge of delivering the subject matter via computer in the same enthusiastic, humorous and easy-to-understand way as in a regular classroom. Secondly, the teacher needs to do hours of typing and illustrating to make the subject matter clear for online students. Thirdly, for online education, interaction with the teacher and with other students –is a more integral element of learning than it is in the classroom. Therefore, it is critical for the students to feel the teacher is always there, ready to answer questions, willing to help develop a sense of community built around the subject matter. Finally , some students need the discipline of the classroom to stay involved or else they will fall behind and drift away in an online class as the online class provides too much flexibility. How to keep those students is probably the greatest challenge to an online class teacher.Unit 2The distinction between neat people and sloppy people boils down to this :neat people are lazier and meaner than sloppy people. For one thing, neat people are bums and clods at heart. They like results and do not care about process. Instead of carrying in their mind’s eye a heavenly vision ,they just handle everything once and for all and everything that is of no immediate use goes into the trash can. They are incredibly wasteful and put neatnessbefore all else, even economic. By contrast ,sloppy people take pains to develop ambitious plans. They may not be neat now but someday they will straighten out the worldBesides ,neat people have cavalier attitude towards everything ,including such possessions as family heirlooms. And they are especially vicious with mail. They throw ads, catalogs, and coupons into the trash can without opening them. They are so insensitive that people, animals, and things are all one to them. They would toy with the idea of throwing the children out of the house just to cut down on the clutter. On the other hand, sloppy people give loving attention to their possessions and find it impossible to part with anything.Unit 3Tobacco smoking has been a popular practice for centuries. The tobacco industry, coupled with Hollywood movies in which both hero and heroine puff away, has successfully established a glamorous image of smokers. As a result, people take up smoking with illusion of looking either dapper or fashionable and most of them end up hopeless addicted to cigarettes. In some Third World countries, as in American ghettoes and on reservations, money that should be spent for food goes instead to the tobacco companies. Indeed, smoking is nothing but self-poisoning, and watching their loved ones dying of smoking, family members are often overwhelmed with a feeling of futility.Meanwhile, we must feel empathy for the tobacco plant itself. Though for centuries the plant has been venerated by Native Americans as a sacred medicine to heal wounds and cure diseases, it has been captured and abused to enslave the world. And with its true nature suppressed, the tobacco plant has become deadly. Indeed,we should redeem tobacco’s soul, restore its self-respect right away and promote the slogan:” every home a smoke-free zone.”。

Therefore, many people regard the pursuit of truth as the ultimate goal of their lives to the truth and make understanding contributions to mankind.Truth is both absolute and relative. We say that truth is absolute because truth can objectively reflect the essential of things. However, any truth is but people’s correct understanding of the development of things at a certain stage. Therefore, truth is relative and develops constantly. Sometimes, the brilliance of truth may dim but it will never die out. For some people, truth may seem beyond their reach. In fact, it is as long as we keep pursuing it heart and soul.。

Chinese Translation of Paragraphs1.

My family could barely get by on my small income from driving a cab. One late night I responded to a call for a cab ride. To my surprise, when I arrived at the address, I found it was a frail old lay who was awaiting me. After she got into the cab, I engaged her in conversation. I learnt that she was going to the hospice. Her doctor said she didn’t have very long. The old lady told me to drive through the downtown area. She pointed at some old buildings, telling me those were the places where she used to work or live. When the cab finally pulled up in front of the hospice, I didn’t accept her fare. In the rest of the day, I was lost in thought. Though I had to make a living, I lived not for the sole purpose of surviving. When circumstances looked gloomy, the small favour I had done could be acandle light. However faint the light was, it managed to warm up a soul and ennobled me as well. I did take pride in that small favour.Theme-Related Writing▆Do one of the following writing tasks after class.1) Suppose you were Frannie, the head waitress, in Text A. Write a short story about Stevie from your perspective.2)Read the following newspaper clipping and writea short essay on the question:Should We Offer Seats to Elderly People on the Bus during Rush Hours?▆Sample Essay for Task 1:We all knew Stevie was mentally handicapped, so everyone, especially our boss himself, doubted whether he would be a capable busboy in the truck-stop restaurant where I worked as the head waitress. However, our worries were gradually removed one week later. Smiling and hard-working, Stevie won over all our trucker regulars as well as us employees.Later we learnt that Stevie badly needed the job because the money he earned made it possible for his mother and him to live together; otherwise he would be sent to a group home. So you can imagine how worried Stevie was when he had to take sick leave for heart surgery. He was afraid that he would lose his job. After the operation, in the week before he returned, he called 10 times to make sure that he could still have the job back. At that time, what concerned me most was how Stevie could handle the huge medical bills. But something happened which completely caught me unawares. Our regular customers, those warm-hearted truckers, were so generous that they, together with their companies, contributed over $10,000 for Stevie. That Thanksgiving Day was a big day when Stevie was back to work and when the money was presented to Stevie as a surprise gift. I cried a bit while people were cheering for the occasion. Now, Stevie is still working here. Our boss thinks that Stevie is the best worker he has ever hired.▆Sample Essay for Task 2:Should We Offer Seats to Elderly People on the BusDuring Rush Hours?I am amazed to read what a blogger says about offering bus seats to the elderly. He claims that “it’s the young who need it more”because they go to work early in the morning and feel exhausted after a day’s work. The blogger also argues that it is unfair to offer seats to the elderly since they already enjoy free rides, and further suggests that during rush hours senior citizens be denied such treatment.I could never bring myself to agree with the blogger. Taking good care of the elderly is a universally accepted standard of conduct. In my opinion, offering seats to our elders is not just an indication of good manners; it is a moral issue. I always consider it my moral obligation to help others. Yes, you may feel comfortable for a while by remaining in your seat, but you will lose your character and moral values in the long run.Respecting the elderly is also our social convention. It is precisely out of our love and respect for the elderly that such special benefits asfree rides are offered to them. No one can deprive senior citizens of their right to go out by bus at any time they like, and what’s more, we should make sure that they get special care when the bus is fully packed with passengers.Caring for the elderly and being taken care of can be a mutually satisfying experience for everyone involved. It is through performing such small acts as offering seats to the needy that we learn to contribute to the building of a harmonious society.。

When the days begin to shorten, soon after the summer solstice, a tree feeds its leaves no more and begins pulling nutrients back into its trunk androots. Undernourished, thechlorophyll in the leaves gradually breaks down. So, for the first time all year, we see the other colors in the leaf. Although they were always here, chlorophyll’sshocking green hid them from view.

They are insensitive and thereis no sentimental salvaging of birthday cards or the last letter a dying relative ever wrote. Sometimes they do fix their eyes on the board but their minds are wandering in Never-NeverLand, while at other times they just indulge in sleeping in class.

I would not know whether the student submitting th e work was the same person who registered for the course.Online teaching also required rethinking how I deliver the subject matter. Withou t face-to-face communication, can I, via computer, make the students feel the same ki nd of enthusiasm and appreciate my sense of humor? My shy daughter’s experience proved to be very inspiring. She never spoke in cl ass, but in the two online courses she took, she dived into discussions and posted her opinions. The online course began and things ran better than I had expected. The students all followed the directions well, and the discussion board was lively. I’ve never met a ny of my students but I got to know them by their work and I saw their learning attitudes develop before my eyes.I found that online education worked best with students who were vcomfortable with the computer and willing to become part of a community built around the subject matter. And it required teachers to be willing to help build that sense of community a nd make the students feel the teacher was always there.UNIT 2WORD1)He was merely a boy;I wouldn't have expected him to understand those abstract formulas.2)Though leading a frugal life,Charles is very generous, contributing time and money to a number of charitable organizations.3)He wasn't the sort of person who kept things for sentimental reasons;he threw them away immediately after use.4)The fire had destroyed most the building, but we managed to salvage a few valuable items.5)He was looking through a pile of old newspaper clippings for the report on the 100th anniversary of the university.6)Reclining in a comfortable chair,David idly flipped through a sports magazine.7)How can you expect an 'A' for this course when you turn in an essay as sloppy as this?8)The project needs to be meticulously planned as we have a tight deadline and only a limited budget.EXPRESSION1)Due to the cleaners strike, the rubbish in my house had been left unattended for days and it began to pile up against the wall.2)I was thinking of giving away those baby clothes of my daughter's,but for sentimental reasons I couldn't bring myself to part with them.3)First apply shampoo to your hair and leave the shampoo for two minutes, then rinse it off with warm water.4)After months of preparation,Kate and her parter finally set up their own printing business.5)I put forward a number of suggestions to improve working efficiency, but the management just toyed with ideas for a while and then rejected them.6)When questioned about the high oil price at present, nearly all interviewees claimed they had been forced to cut down fuel and many reported inconvenience in their lives.7)Have you finished with scissor? We're waiting to have our paper-cutting done.8)Buried in mounds of files,I just wanted to get the whole thing over with sooner so that I could go away and enjoy my holiday with all my heart.9)The global financial crisis is cutting a swath through the country's economy, with companies going bankrupt and individuals cutting down on their expenditure.10)Paul is an easy-going fellow at heart though sometimes he is very harsh and strict with his students.CLOZEThe distinction between neat people and sloppy people boils down to this:neat people are lazier and meaner than sloppy people. For one thing, neat people are bums and clods at heart. They like results and do not care about process.Instead of carrying in their mind's eye a heavenly vision, they just handle everything once and for all and everything that is of no immediate use goes into the trash can. They are incredibly wasteful and put neatness before all else, even economics.By contrast, sloppy people take pains to develop ambitions plans. They may not be neat now but someday they will straighten out the world.Besides, neat people have cavalier attitudes toward everything, including such possessions as family heirlooms. And they are especially vicious with mail. They throw ads catalogs, and coupons into the trash can without opening them. They are so insensitive that people, animals, and things are all one to them. They would toy with the idea of throwing the children out of the house just to cut down on the clutter. On the other hand, sloppy people give loving attention to their possessions and find it impossible to part with anything.TRANSLATIONSloppy people are not really sloppy. CLOZETobacco smoking has been a popular practice for centuries. The tobacco industry, coupled with Hollywood movie in which both hero and heroine puff away, has successfully established a glamorous image of smokers. As a result, people take up smoking with the illusion of looking either dapper or fashionable and most ofthem end up hopelessly addicted to cigarettes. In some Third World countries,as in American ghettos and on reservations, money that should be spent for food goes instead to the tobacco companies.Indeed, smoking is nothing but self-poisoning,and watching their loved ones dying of smoking, family members are often overwhelmed with a feeling of futility.Meanwhile,we must feel empathy for the tobacco plant itself.Though for centuries the plant has been venerated by Native Americans as a sacred medicine to heal wounds and cure diseases,it has been captured and abused to enslave the world. And with its true nature suppressed, the tobacco plant has become deadly.Indeed,we should redeem tobacco's soul, restore its self-respect right away and promote the slogan:"Every home a smoke-free zone."TRANSLATIONHer daughter smoked and she felt a deep hurt as her mother. She remembered ho w as a child she sat by, through the years, and watched her father, who smoked like a chimney, wheeze through most of his life feeling half his strength, and she remembere d how carefully she ate when she was pregnant, how patiently she taught her daughter how to cross a street safely. She had a feeling of futility when she saw her daughter r epeating the mistake of her grandfather. She did not want to see in the family another victory for the tobacco companies, but she was faced with powerful rivals: the tobacco industry and Hollywood. The two collaborated to win over completely people like her father and made them hopelessly addicted to cigarettes. It is not easy to quit smoking, but things may become easier of smokers realize th at smoking is s form of self-battering that also batters those who must sit by, and if we can really make “every home a smoke-free zone.”UNIT 4WORD1)Smart and hardworking,Germen seemed destined for a successful career ahead.2)At 31,Peggy feels trap in the boring job of an office secretary and she has a yearning to escape.3)Yesterday a storm blasted the Florida coast with 75 m.p.h.winds and left two tourists missing.4)The couple hardly ever reach an agreement---their conversations often erupt into quarrels and shouting.5)The ballet company's new performance successfully blended tradition and creative innovation, which won great admiration from critics.6)Repeated exam failures had eroded her confidence and exerted an influence onher---she started to skip classes more often.7)Ever since our secretary resigned, our office has been in a state of total chaos.8)Parents are usually inclined to impose their own moral values on theirchildren, which might bring on rebellion from teenagers.9)Some fathers are jealous of the attention a newborn baby receives from its mother, even if they won't admit it.10)I have this strong yearning for open spaces from having lived in a crowed city for too many years.EXPRESSION1)The result of the survey is quite alarming---half the marriages in this country end in divorce.2)Being addicted to betting on horses,he had gambled away most of his inheritance by the time he was thirty.3)We cooked too much for lunch and had to take what was left over for supper.4)Many companies are now suffering from a chronic shortage of funds brought on in recent years by the financial crisis.5)She didn't quarrel with her husband when she found out about his infidelity, but her annoyance showed itself in her look.6)Inflation nibbles away at people's savings and reduces their value considerably.7)To show my affection for the little girl,I bent down and tried to kiss her on the forehead, but she pulled away in time, which made me rather embarrassed.8)As the advancing soldiers closed in on the town, people started running into the underground shelters for safety.CLOZEThe causes for marital despair are varied. Some marriages fail because of the outside weather:pressures such as job loss, illness, care of aging parents and all the other plagues of life may harshly hit marriage. Some other marriages fail because of a changed inner climate. At the tender beginnings of romance, each of us selects with unconscious accuracy a mate who will recreate with us the emotional patterns of our first homes,a mate who will help us rediscover both the psychological happiness and miseries of our past lives. And all marriages rely on the basic myth of meaning everything to each other,of merging together and solving all of life'sproblems.Yet,realities of life erode the visions of marital bliss. Now many marriages fall apart because those in the commitment are unwilling to exercise theself-discipline that marriage requires.Besides,an essential element for a good marriage,i.e.,communication between partners,is often missing.TRANSLATIONMarriage has always been difficult. Why has it become so hard for couples to sta y together in today’s society? On the one hand, our modern social fabric is thin, and the permissiveness of soci ety has created unrealistic expectations and thrown the family into chaos. On the other hand, marriage requires sexual, financial and emotional discipline, but people today a re unwilling to exercise the self-discipline that marriage requires. Besides, couples tod ay must also deal with all the cultural changes brought on in recent years by the wome n’s movement and sexual revolution. These and other realities of life erode the visions of marital bliss. If we lack adaptability, flexibility, genuine love and kindness, and an imagination strong enough to feel what the other is feeling, if we cannot bring difficu lties out into the open, then marriage may come to the end of the road.Of course, divorce id not an evil act. For some people, it provides salvation and it can be a step toward a good life. However, marriages that do not fail but improve, tha t persist despite imperfections, offer a wondrous shelter for our mutual humanity. TRANSLATIONDo you have this lingering doubt that you won’t be able to write something when you need to? Do you feel it’s like a constant fog or static that clouds the mind and yo u can never get out of its clutches? As a matter of fact, it is possible to write something ---- not something great or pleasing but at least something usable, workable ---- when your mind is out of commission. The trick is to do all your cooking out on the table because your mind is incapable of doing any inside.Try simply to steer your mind in the direction or general vicinity of the thing you are trying to write about and start writing and keep writing. Be as loose, drifting, quirky and jerky as possible when you write. Don’t think about what you are writing or what you have written or else you will overload the circuit again. Then take some little pieces of paper and simply read over from the beginning of what you wrote, and see if you can gather up something useful into one sentence and write it by itself on a little sheet of paper. Then, read through the little slips of paper a number of times and build a relationship among them until they get into different piles. At this point, you find you can finally begin to think, and that lab report which has been occupying your mind is no longer unreachable.。

Read the story of a single mother of three, and you will understand what it means. She was married once, but later her husband lost his job and life became increasingly difficult. After giving birth to the last baby, her marriage came to an end.In order to save her children from suffering, she summoned up her courage and went to ask for help. She got seventy-eight dollars a month for the four of them. After the rent, most of the rest went for food. There was no money left to get the refrigerator fixed and the milk went sour; no money for hot water, and even in winter she had to do washing in icy cold water. She had chronic anemia caused from poor diet, a bad case of worms, and needed a corrective operation, but there was no money for iron pills, or better food, or worm medicine, to say nothing of having an operation. She had no money for grannies; no money for paper handkerchiefs and her children were seen with runny noses all the time. She tried her best to use only the minimum electricity. She stayed up all night on cold nights. because she had to watch the fire, for fear that one spark on the newspaper covering the walls would cause a fire and the sleeping children would die in flames. She saw no bright future. Sooner or later, the boys would end up behind the bars of their prison or turn to the freedom of alcohol or drugs and findthemselves enslaved. And what awaited the daughter was, at best, a life like that of the mother.Indeed, poverty is an acid that drips on pride until all pride is worn away. Poverty is a chisel that chips on honor until honor is worn away.WRITINGSample Essay: My Reflections after Reading“What Is Poverty?”In defining poverty, Jo Goodwin Parker creates a vivid picture of the miserable life poverty-stricken people live. I was very much touched by her harsh, direct and angry tone. Her definition of poverty has set me thinking a lot.First of all, what Parker says about poverty in the United States reminds me of what my Grandfather once said about his miserable life in China in the 1940’s. Indeed, poor people everywhere suffer in more or less the same way.I do have great sympathy with them and sincerely hope that the world will say goodbye to poverty soon. Secondly, I have come to see more clearly that we must cherish what we have today. Indeed, the decent and comfortablelife we young people enjoy today comes from the hard work of many generations. However, we tend to take today’s happy life for granted, and sometimes we even complain about the slightest discomfort in life. This is a harmful attitude because it makes us forget the past. We should remember that what we have now was never even dreamed of by the older generation.Content makes poor men rich; discontentment makes rich men poor. Lastly, we should have a right attitude towards poverty. In the face of poverty, it’s no use complaining or just making emotional appeals for help. Instead, we must rely on our courage, talent, and persistence and get rid of poverty with our own effort. Diligence and hard work is the only way out. We may be poor materially but we should not make ourselves poor spiritually.UNIT3Working with words and expressions1) pray 2) escorted 3) swirled 4) grin 5) deceived6) punctuated 7) wail 8) rejoicing 9) moans 10) serenely1) by leaps and bounds 2) a sea of 3) holding out4) take his name in vain 5) held up 6) am ashamed of (am or was?) His aunt told him that when he was saved, he would see a light, and something would happen to him inside! She also said he could see and hear and feel Jesus in his soul. Young Hughes believed in the literal meaning the hot, crowded church, waiting for Jesus to come to him. After the sermon by the preacher, all the children went to the altar one after another. This meant that they were saved. But Hughes kept sitting there. He was still waiting for Jesus to come, wanting something to happen to him. Now the whole congregation was praying for him alone. The pressure on him was increasing and he began to feel ashamed of himself, holding everything up so long. In order to avoid further trouble, Hughes decided to lie and say that Jesus had come. So he got up and was saved finally. That night, lying in bed, Hughes cried in agony. He felt guilty because he had lied in public and he didn’t believe in Jesus any more.WRITINGSample Essay: My First Experience as a TeacherIt was a Sunday morning. I got up early and dressed myself in my Sunday best. It was my first day as a part-time teacher of English. It won’t be a difficult job teaching a group of child ren some basic English,?I thought to myself as I was walking towards a private kindergarten. The manager, a friend of mine, had informed me that this Sunday EnglishLearning Program was initiated at the request of the parents, who wished to expose their pre-school children to some English. We don’t have textbooks and you may plan your teaching as you see fit,? the manager had assured mc.As I entered the kindergarten, I heard a mighty wail of shouts and cries coming out a classroom. That must be the classroom,? I said to myself and quickened my steps. I was shocked to see some 20 naughty and noisy kids talking and laughing. Some were chasing after each other while others were standing on their chairs singing. Strangely, when they saw me, they all quieted down and returned to their seats. In a hushed silence, punctuated by a few giggles from some girls, I introduced myself. Then I asked them in Chinese what they would like to learn and they all said that they wanted to learn an English song.I did not prepare for that, but I still remembered the “ABC Song”? that I learned when I was a kid. ? sang the song from memory and the expressions on their faces told mc that they liked it a lot. So ? wrote the 26 English letters on the blackboard and we started learning and singing together. it was fun, indeed. Then, I thought I’d better teach some sentences as I had planned. So I wrote on the blackboard HOW ARE YOU? and HOW OLD ARE YOU? making a point that they got to know the Chinese meaning of each word separately. By reading after me they were learning fast.Suddenly, a little boy rose to his feet and accused me of teaching them the wrong thing. Pointing his finger at the blackboard, he translated the sentences word for word into Chinese:Zen me shi ni? Zen me lao shi ni?The whole room then broke into a sea of shouting and waves of rejoicing swept over eve ryone’s face.My first teaching experience was a success and I learned a lesson, too: It is no easy job to teach.UNIT4Working with words and expressions1)grin 2) browse 3) shivered 4) hearty 5) nerves6) courtship 7) pinching 8) napping 9) blinking 10) bragging 1) live off 2) cut loose 3) shot out 4) (were?) weighed down 5) stopped short of 6) washing them down with 7) shake ... out8) come up to 9) hosing downIncreasing Your Word Power2. 1) smile 2) laugh 3) grin 4) chuckle 5) giggle 6) roarCloze1)cracking 2) living 3) refrigerator 4) quart 5) change 6) porch 7) race 8) cleaning 9) casually 10) hearty 11) Eventually12) saw 13) browsing 14) scared 15) courtshipTRANSLATIONLife is full of miracles. Some accept the idea and may cite such and such examples to prove that it works. Others consider it just as a case of romance but would not take it as a golden rule for a happy marriage. My opinion is that for those who wish to develop serious and lasting relationships, love at first sight? is a dangerous game to play. First of all, love at first sight may tempt one to jump on the bandwagon of love with too much haste. One needs to figure out what one really wants from a love relationship before declaring that he or she is in love. Love takes time to blossom and it takes a lot of mutual understanding, caring, sharing and affection. If you are not ready to take the responsibility of loving and being loved, then do not make haste, for haste makes waste. Secondly, love at first sight is often prompted by physical attraction, but true love is grounded not just on mutual attraction but rather on mental compatibilities. In developing a lifetime relationship, inner charm, personality traits, character and values arc the most important factors to be considered. I believe in three old sayings: “beauty is in the eye of the beholder”? but “beauty is only skin deep”? and “beauty comes from within”? It is true that love is a feeling that cannot be rationally explained, but true love is different from puppy love or innocent crushes. So, if you have fallen in love at first sight, be sober and wise. Don't make a hasty decision on a matter of lifetime significance.UNIT5Increase your language proficiency1) delight 2) ducked 3) thrust 4) strained 5) resentful 6) distressed 7) alarmed 8) contradicting 9) intent 10) hovered 11) perched12) wrestling2. l) went out for 2) pin him down 3) hold back 4) now and then5) throwing a glance 6) scrambled to my feet 7) There’S no point in 8) bent downCLOZE1)master 2) case3) burn 4) bewilderment 5) baffled6)swept 7) gasping 8) perched 9) grinned 10) give11) prostrate 12) queer 13) lurked 14) pounce 15) cub TRANSLATI ONWhen he was little, his father would bend down from his great height to sweep him into the air. He was a factory worker and seldom stayed home with me by day. In my memory, he never said anything li ke “I love you” to me, and I always saw him as being a strict disciplinarian who rarely cracked a smile. I still remember how I used to break into fits of temper and how I played a pampered child in the presence of my mother. But never did I dare to do so when my father was around. The only occasion when I could feel hisaffection was our occasional Sun day trips to the park -- My father would lift me tip and perch me upon his broad shoulders and I would hold lily head high like a princess. When I started school, I noticed a big change in my father. They are insensitive and thereis no sentimental salvaging of birthday cards or the last letter a dying relative ever wrote. Sometimes they do fix their eyes on the board but their minds are wandering in Never-NeverLand, while at other times they just indulge in sleeping in class.

Thirdly, for online education, interaction--with the teacher and with other students--is a more integral element of learning than it is in the classroom. Therefore, it is critical for the students to feel the teacher is always there ready to answer questions, willing to help develop a sense of community built around the subject matter .Finally, some students need the discipline of the classroom to stay involve or else they will fall behind and drift away in an online class as the online class provide too much flexibility . How to keep those students is probably the greatest challenge to an onlineclass teacher.TRANSLATIONWhen I first came into contact with online teaching, I had questions about the val idity of this instructional medium. She never spoke in cl ass, but in the two online courses she took, she dived into discussions and posted her o pinions. The online course began and things ran better than I had expected. The students a ll followed the directions well, and the discussion board was lively. I’ve never met an y of my students but I got to know them by their work and I saw their learning attitude s develop before my eyes.I found that online education worked best with students who were very comforta ble with the computer and willing to become part of a community built around the sub ject matter. And it required teachers to be willing to help build that sense of communit y and make the students feel the teacher was always there.UNIT 2WORD1)He was merely a boy; I wouldn't have expected him to understand those abstract formulas.2)Though leading a frugal life, Charles is very generous ,contributing time and money to a number of charitable organizations.3)He wasn't the sort of person who kept things for sentimental reasons ;he threw them away immediately after use.4)The fire had destroyed most the building ,but we managed to salvage a few valuable items.5)He was looking through a pile of old newspaper clippings for the report on the 100th anniversary of the university.6)Reclining in a comfortable chair, David idly flipped through a sports magazine.7)How can you expect an 'A' for this course when you turn in an essay as sloppy as this?8)The project needs to be meticulously planned as we have a tight deadline and onlya limited budget.EXPRESSION1)Due to the cleaners strike ,the rubbish in my house had been left unattended for days and it began to pile up against the wall.2)I was thinking of giving away those baby clothes of my daughter's, but for sentimental reasons I couldn't bring myself to part with them.3)First apply shampoo to your hair and leave the shampoo for two minutes, then rinse it off with warm water.4)After months of preparation, Kate and her parter finally set up their own printing business.5)I put forward a number of suggestions to improve working efficiency, but the management just toyed with ideas for a while and then rejected them.6)When questioned about the high oil price at present, nearly all interviewees claimed they had been forced to cut down fuel and many reported inconvenience in their lives.7)Have you finished with scissor? They are incredibly wasteful and put neatness before all else, even economics. By contrast, sloppy people take pains to develop ambitions plans. As a result, people take up smoking with the illusion of looking either dapper or fashionable and most of them end up hopelessly addicted to cigarettes. In some Third World countries, as in American ghettos and on reservations, money that should be spent for food goes instead to the tobacco companies. Indeed, we should redeem tobacco's soul, restore its self-respect right away and promote the slogan: "Every home a smoke-free zone."TRANSLATIONHer daughter smoked and she felt a deep hurt as her mother. She remembered ho w as a child she sat by, through the years, and watched her father, who smoked like a chimney, wheeze through most of his life feeling half his strength, and she remembere d how carefully she ate when she was pregnant, how patiently she taught her daughter how to cross a street safely. Some marriages fail because of the outside weather: pressures such as job loss, illness, care of aging parents and all the other plagues of life may harshly hit marriage. Some other marriages fail because of a changed inner climate. At the tender beginnings of romance, each of us selects with unconscious accuracy a mate who will recreate with us the emotional patterns of our first homes, a mate who will help us rediscover both the psychological happiness and miseries of our past lives. And all marriages rely on the basic myth of meaning everything to each other, of merging together and solving all of life's problems. Yet, realities of life erode the visions of marital bliss. Now many marriages fall apart because those in the commitment are unwilling to exercise the self-discipline that marriage requires. Besides,an essentia l element for a good marriage, i.e., communication between partners, is often missing.TRANSLATIONMarriage has always been difficult. The first thing is to admit your condition: for some reason, your mind is incapable of considering anything in relation to anything else though it can put a simple feeling or perception into understandable words. Then try to write as much as possible. Don't refrain from writing about whatever that is on your mind. When you feel you have enough of it,read over what you wrote and every time you come to anything that could be squeezed into one sentence or one assertion, write it by itself on a little slip of paper. After you have done this, play solitaire with thoselittle slips, shifting them around and looking through in various sequences and getting them to distribute themselves in different piles. Often at this point, your sanity begins to return. And then you can finally come up with something workable.
