新世纪大学英语综合教程4完形填空(close)答案及原文

新世纪大学英语综合教程4完形填空(close)答案及原文

Close1 Man has a blood tie with nature and nobody can live outside nature. Nature providesus with we need: the air we breathe, the water we drink, and the food we eat.For quite a long time after man began to live in the realm of nature, he lived in fear of its destructive forces. he used to regard nature with its elemental forces as something hostile to him. And even the forest was something wild and frightening to him. very often ,he was unable to obtain the merest daily necessities though he worked together with others stubbornly and collectively with his imperfect tools , through his interaction with nature , man changed it gradually . he cut down forest , cultivated land , transferred various species of plants and animals to different climatic conditions, changed the shape and climate of his environment and transformed pants and animals. he subdued and disciplined electricity and compelled it to serve the interests of society.Nonetheless , with the consta expansion of agriculture and industry , man has robbed nature of too much of its irreplaceabl resources , poluted his own living environment and caused about 95% of the species that have existed over the past 600 million years to become extinct and still many others to be endangered . the previous dynamic balance between man and nature is on the verge of breaking down . man is now faced with the problem of how to stop , or at least to moderate the destructive effect of technology on nature .The crisis of the ecological situation has become a global problem . the solution to the problem depends on rational and wise organization both of production itself and care for mother nature . this can only be done by all humanity , rather than by individuals , enterprises or separate countries.2 Technology is a hot issue nowadays. the defenders of technology stress its advantages while the opponents emphasize its disadvantages. Neither side has ever taken the time to look at the opposite point of view. The defenders of technology hold that with technology peoples living conditions have been greatly improved. For example the boom in productivity has made goods better and cheaper. Therefore ,tings that were onceluxuries, such as jet travel and long-distance phone calls have become necessities. Medical technology in particular has benefited us a lot ,especially in prolonging life expectancy. On the other hand, the opponents of technology argue that technology makes life obviously worse. Telemarketing traffic jams and identity theft are all phenomena that make people consciously unhappy. In addition many people believe technology disrupts relationships and fractures community.Ever since the Industrial Revolution the relationship between happiness and technology has been an eternal subject for social critics and philosophers, though economists and social scientists have seldom touched on the topic. However in 1974 the economist Richard Easterlin did groundbreaking work on the relationship between prosperity and well-being. In his famous paper entitled Does Economic Growth Improve the Human Lot Easterlin showed that there was no real correlation between a nations income level and its citizens happiness in the developed countries. In fact technology is neither good nor bad. It depends on what we want to do with it. Therefore the responsibility belongs exclusively to humans who have to acquire a social conscience to respect human beings nature and its balances.3 According to craig Russell , when we make an initial effort in our personal quests for knowledge , we may not even know that a certain fild of learning exists . but , after we have done some reading ,we will get to know more about the topic.at the same time ,we may feel that all the reading creates more questions rather than answers them . we then realize how little we really know and how much more we need to read and think and write . Russell suggests that we write after reading each time . his experience tells him that it is his writing that has led him to acquire a better grasp of the topic he studies . people may think that only those who know and who are ( sure ) of themselves write . for Russell , however , it’s just the opposite, for writing doesn’t close things off ----it opens things up .To say that the more we know , the more we know we don’t know seems contradictory .according to Russell , modern physics tells us that reality itself is contradictory . the more closely scientists look into our physical reality , the more it slips away from . in a way , the more they learn , the less they know .Craig Russell believes that a proper understanding will inevitably lead us away from the force and rigidity of dogmatism and toward the flexibility and freedom of the individual. Therefore, we must temper our pride in knowing with the humility of not knowing. the truth always exists there ,but , it is like the rainbow because we can never really grasp it , never hold it in our hands and truly know it . we can only , as William james said , “live today by what truth we can get today and be ready to call it falsehood t omorrow.”4 Most people have work to do. With work, they can enjoy their lives. However people who did physical labor were looked down upon in the past. Many people were compelled to take manual labor because it was an absolute necessity for them to earn a living and to support their families. By contrast, people who did mental work were highly respected. Under the influence of this idea, even today some people still idealize their future when making choices for their career. What they care most about is whether the job can give them enough social status rather than whether they can realize their values in it. In their eyes, those who do manual labor should still be classified as inferior in social status. In fact, there is no essential difference between those who work with their hands and those who work with their mind. Whether a job is labor or work does not depend on the job itself but on people‘s attitude toward it. As long as you like your job, you will think you are fortunate enough to take it and you will do it enthusiastically.5 What dose success mean to you ? does it mean wealth , fame , power , or something else ? different people have different in life so they understand success in different ways . some people chase money their whole lives .to them, more money means more success . some people run after fame . With fame and reputation, they can gainthe admiration and love of many others. However, some people dedicate themselves to the well-being of society.Doubtlessly, money is something that can be used as a reward to those who have done valuable work. Those who perform their work excellently should be paid sufficiently. But success cannot be measured in monetary terms, nor in terms of the amount of power one may exercise over others. After all, money and power can assure people neither of happiness nor of respect from others.Fame, too, is a flawed measure of success. Momentary fame can bring great joy to those who have it for a time. but they are very likely to become the slaves of their celebrity because of the public’s demands .in addition , they will easily become the target of everyone who disagrees with them and of the media as well .to be frank , if one is unable to fully enjoy life and liberty , the short-lived success is nothing but illusory Therefore, to achieve the right kind of success is vitally important. as long as one can combines his own material needs and spiritual satisfaction with those of the well-beings of society , he should be held in high regard.6 . Truth is a fact accept as true, for which proof exists .Truth is a great principle , without which beauty may fade and love may wither. Those who uphold truth have a strong sense of responsibility. Those who hold firmly to truth are faithful to their duty and the people they serve .they commit themselves to the well-being of others. With aspirations to make a contribution to society, they are ready to correct their own mistakes , If any . it can be said that they are men of moral integrity who never ask for gratitude in return.Truth dawns upon us slowly but surely .in the long quest for truth, people have (accumulated) precious knowledge and experience. However, truth also needs nourishment just as plants need water, because many people are too preoccupied with petty and sometimes even mean concerns to respond to the great beauty of truth when it flowers or they frequently fail to appreciate truth when it is tendered. In short, truth is an invaluable asset to the whole of humanity. Stick to the truth and we will weave a timeless pattern, and earn the respect and esteem of others , elevate the world today above its present imperfections and place ourselves in the proud position of promoting the good of the humanity.7. we often hear people say, time is money .But today many Americans have come to realize that the crazy pursuit of money is leavings them too little time to enjoy life .they are tired of working just for the luxuries of life and beginning to change their fast-paced lifestyles for a simple and frugal one ,hoping to keep family ,friends, work and play all of a piece .For some people, creating a more balanced life involves changing jobs o locations .For others, it means trading two incomes for one, in which case they must curtail expenses. So some have sold out their splendid homesick and moved into smaller houses. They have given up the extra cars, unnecessary modern conveniences, and expensive hobbies .They now do things by themselves to avoid paying for the services of others .They resist the temptation to purchase things on impulse and spend money only on bare necessities and things that do not make wasteful use of the earth's resources .However ,they do not deny themselves what they like or enjoy .The change in their lifestyle is not one involving deprivation ;it is just simplification .They believe that they can still live a happy and fulfilling life on less money .Indeed ,whether we maintain a healthy lifestyle or not does not depend on how wealthy we are but on whether we have the resolve and courage to discard our old consumption habits .8. The story of an Hour leaves us much to think about .In the story ,when Richardson ,who worked in the newspaper office ,learned that his friend Brently Mallard had been killed in a railroad disaster, he was greatly shocked .he only waited until he was assured by a second telegram and then he hastened to go to Josephine ,sister of Brently's wife ,and asked her to break the news as gently as possible to her sister because he knew MRS. Mallard was afflicted with a heart trouble .He was afraid that if someone less tender brought the message to her ahead of him ,there might be dreadful consequences.People usually expect a wife to accept such sad news with a paralyzed inability ,but MRS.MALLARD did not .At the news ,she wept at once ,with sudden ,wild abandonment in her sister's arms ,and then she went to her own room ,forbidding anyone else to go in.When she was alone ,she felt something subtle coming to her ,which gradually came to her mind ,beginning to possess her. Hard as she tried ,she couldn't get rid of the feeling .What was it ?She didn't know .However ,a clear and excited perception occupied her which made her regard her husband's death no longeron as something important ,because beyond that bitter moment she saw a long procession of years to come that would belong to her absolutely ,during which her husband would not impose his will upon her any more .Just at that moment ,her husband came back ,travel-stained carrying his briefcase and umbrella .Seeing him ,she died of a sudden heart attack .本文档部分内容来源于网络,如有内容侵权请告知删除,感谢您的配合!。

大一英语下学期完形填空

大一英语下学期完形填空

大一英语下学期完形填空完形填空 Unit 1I am frequently asked the question,” Can you use chopsticks?” I havelived in Korea, Japan, and China. In each country, I have, more often than not and without having requested one, been given a fork when one was available. I have politely refused and said that I wound be fine with chopsticks. Sometime, I have to make further explanation.Chopsticks are the least of my worries when I am eating in an Asian homeor restaurant. In fact, learning how to use chopsticks takes me nothing but a few weeks. This is not to say I was skillful, though. Learning how to use chopsticks is easy for me, whereas learning the rituals and how to conduct myself at the table is quite difficult. Just how many times do I have to say “no, thank you” when I really mean “no, thank you, I truly am full”? Howdo I get away with refusing more food without offending someone? If I insist and I still get more, is it appropriate just not to eat it? This wound be impolite where I come from.I have enjoyed many great meals and my interactions with the people have been great. I am increasingly aware that I will never be able to give back as much as I have received. I don’t know how I can ever thank all of the people who introduced me to eating in AsiaUnit2This was what all of the training and pain was about---wining. I watchedTV to see the young runner who had been under my coaching for a few years. I wound have been there on the spot had it not been for the traffic problem. I couldn’t make it even on my bicycle. While I watc hed the younger runner enter to the cheers of thousands of people I could not help thinking of the painsthat he had gone through in his training. The young runner was hardly considered to be promising when he first came to me. There were countless training sessions full of pain for him. I had seen fatigue written on his face.I had heard him swear at me. I had been indifferent to his anger and pain. It was clear that only hard work could earn him success. I had smiled to myself when I found that he had too much passion to give up. And he would persistwith the training until he reached perfection. I had never forgot to remindhim that despite the challenges he had to keep on practice. I was unfair that he had no time for his girlfriend. But that was life for him!The thunderous shouts and cheers drew me back to TV screen. Oh, my dear, the young runner was gaining speed. He was running to the finish line. He was strong enough to beat other runners. His courage, heart and disciplinetogether with his years of practice won him the honor.Tears rolled down my cheeks when I found on the screen the young runnerwas looking around. I understood at once that he was looking for me. For years, he had become so used to my presence, success or failure. It must have seemed strange for him to find me missing. Unit 3I didn’t marry for all the “right reasons”. Love had nothing to do with marriage. And, for my husband’s part, well, I suspect love was on his mind either. He married me because I made him feel young. He was such an ordinary man going through his change. That didn’t bother me, though. He was stillfairly charming, pretty handsome and above all rich. I married for money, andI don’t have any doubt about it. My friends don’t applaud my decision, but I can also tell that they wish, at least a little bit, for some of the samethings that I now enjoy. They always prefer to spend a lot of time by my swimming pool than at their common little homes. And another thing, they are always complaining about their“beloved”. “He’s always watching how much I spend.” “It’s become more like a business relationship than a marriage. My husband, however, doesn’t care how much I spend and our marriage never became a business because it already was one. You could say, we have a mutual understanding. We are very realistic about the whole thing. It is painful for my friends when they realize that love is justan explosion. Marriage for love never existed for me. And, he’ll never divorce me. He’d lose too much money. Uni t 4Love is important because without it life has no meaning or purpose. Love allows us to do more than we could ever accomplish without its power. So often we take good care of our physical needs . We make sure our bodies are fed, cleaned, clothed, exercised and rested. However, we tend to overlook the most important need---love. Of course, as a society, love is not overlooked.Popular media constantly places great emphasis on what we need to do attract “love”. But being loved is not as powerful an emo tional need as that desireto love someone else. The need to love and care for others is built into us biologically. This need is what allows parents to give up sleep and food while raising theirchildren. This need is what allows people to put themselves at risk to save others form natural disasters or threats.Love means to cherish, hold dear, and treasure. We do not hurt, harm, or cause pain to those we love; rather, we seek to alleviate(减轻)their suffering. It’s not about wanting to possess or control others; it’s about wanting to set them free. Love is the power that allows the wheel of life to continue turning, for when we love we look beyond our own needs and desires. We sacrifice (牺牲)our time, our energy, our wishes, and sometimes even ourselves because of love. It is love that allowsemergency services personnel to face danger. It is love that allows soldiers to risk everything. The ultimate definition of love is not about feeling but rather about doing good. Unit 5“Knock it off!” Bi lly wound not cease(停止)banging his foot on the table. Mrs. Stewart had lost all patience in telling him to stop. Her words were falling on deaf ears. She had asked her son to quit doing something that was bothering her so many times that she hardy even knew the words were coming from her mouth. Billy had got asked to this. He just ignored his mom’s expressions like these. He banged on without a pause. She used to try to phrase her words in positive ways like, “when you bang on the table that way, it upse ts me. Would you mind doing something else that is a little quieter?” There was warmth in her voice and she had all of the best intentions. But when she actually managed to get Billy’s attention in this way, he simply replied, “But I’m bored.” She tried to offer him a bunch of alternatives(交替), but nothing worked and it all became too tedious(冗长). It had become noticeable even to herself that she was increasingly using negative expressions.Mrs. Stewart seems to understand that even if she shouts she ca n’t expect Billy to respond immediately. But she still believes that to keep on applying the pressures might work someday. Children may learn that感谢您的阅读,祝您生活愉快。

We also live in an age when discussing our feelings is encouraged. But when does it all become too much? With new crazes trending all the time, such as dance challenges and wearing a carpet as a dress, the question is: when can sharing become oversharing on social media?“Oversharing” has become associated with social media, but it isn'texclusiveto this platform. Imagine you head to a party and meet x k w someone. Within five minutes they have revealed private details about their life. While some of us may try to escape these people, according to marriage advisor Carolyn Cole, this form of oversharing could come from a strong desire to connect with someone. But how does this translate to social media?Dr. Christopher Hand, a lecturer in cyberpsychology (网络心理学),says the more details people disclose, the less sympathy we express when things go wrong. It seems that searching for sympathy by oversharing is generally considered as negative rather than the cry for help it could really be.However, Dr. Hand's research also seems to suggest that the more we post on a platform, the more socially attractive we become-provided that the posts that we bang out are positive. Even back in 2015, Gwendolyn Seidman PhD said that we should avoid complaining and being negative online. We should also avoid showing off, especially about our love lives. It makes sense-if your date is going “that well", would you really have time to share a photo with text? So, how can you know if you are oversharing? Well, why not ask your friends in real life. They would probably be happy to tell you if your posts about your breakfast or your complaints about your lack of money really are toomuch.4. To satisfy others' curiosity.C. To remove negative feelings.D. To develop good relationships.6. Which of the following may Dr. Hand agree with?A. Sharing more details online can attract more sympathy.B. Oversharing negative experiences is equal to crying for help.C. Sharing negative posts can't help one become socially attractive.D. Oversharing isn't likely to happen online when things go wrong.7. According to the text, what should be avoided for online sharing?A. Reflecting on past bad manners.B. Showing a great many expensive goods.C. Writing a recipe for a balanced breakfast.D. Recording unforgettable moments with friends.CIt’s easy to do easy things, but they don’t carry the challenges and rewards of doing something difficult. Scott Kelly said he tried to express that view everywhere he went. And he spoke from experience, having spent a career that included the time as a NASA astronaut, US Navy captain, fighter pilot, and engineer.Scott spoke at the University of North Alabama, sharing stories about his experience of spending a year on the International Space Station (ISS). He said the physical pressure of living in weightlessness for a year was hard to describe and that the fluids(积水) in his head sometimes made him feel like he was standing on his head. It also needed some time to recover when he returned home. “My legs were weak and it would be uncomfortable to sit for a while because my body hadn’t had that pressure so long,” Scott said.He discussed life aboard including spending time with Russian astronauts. They came from different cultures. He had managed to get along well with everyone aboard as they lived together, worked together, and had to rely on each other. He thought it was one of the most rewarding things in his life.Though life there was not easy, Scott never regretted being an astronaut and going to space. He also discussed experiences growing up, admitting that he wasn’t always the greatest student but was able to overcome that through hard work and determination.“Never give up or lower your dreams. If you work for it, all things are possible. There is a zero percent chance of succeeding if you don’t even try. Easy things are also worth doingC. A suitable career leads one to success.D. Difficult things are demanding but rewardingDHumans have found an easy way to tell if others are lying. Recent research shows that the best way so far is being clever at how you ask questions and listen to the answers.Much of this research is based on the idea that telling a lie is simply harder mental work than telling the truth. Making up a story takes more effort than simply recording something that happened. And like a writer, a liar has to keep all the unreal details in his memory and sound believable when he explains them. One method that seems to work is asking them to tell their story in reverse order. This is harder when thestory isn't true and makes it easier for you to tell they are lying. An even more basic way that helps is to just ask more questions, especially unexpected ones. Truth-tellers can easily find more to say, but it's a challenge for a liar to come up with something that's not in his prepared story.Researchers suggest that you shouldn't lay all your cards on the table at the start, but only gradually present what proof you have. The liars' stories may not agree with that proof, making it clear that they're lying. So it looks like there are ways to increase the chances of catching a liar; we've just been basing our methods on the wrong stories. Low-tech ways of causing people to make mistakes in conversation seem to work better than any science about eye movement or machines used to recognize a liar. To find a liar, watch less and listen more.12. Why does the author mention the writer?A. To show it's hard to make up lies.B. To show it's hard to recognise a liar.C. To show writers know liars best.D. To show writers are very clever.13. What do we know about liars?A. They often have much to say.B. They often ask many questions.C. They usually prepare a made-up story.D. They usually feel good about themselves.14. What advice is given to help people catch liars?A. Asking them to set their stories down.B. Presenting your proof one by one.C. Telling different stories to them.D. Letting them ask questions.15. Which can be the best title for the text?A. Why People LieB. How to Stop People LyingC. Low-tech Ways to Find a LiarD. LiarsAre Smarter than Thought第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。

This is causing polar ice to melt, sea-levels to rise and has brought about adangerous increase in extreme weather events. These intense climatic changes would likely present challenges to our society and environment. The causes of climate change are mainly anthropogenic (人为的) in nature. Since the industrial revolution, human activities have increased the amount of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. The increased amount of gases which absorb heat has led to more heat being kept in the atmosphere, causing global warming. The certainty of global warming can be seen through some of the natural phenomena like the effect on crops and extreme weather conditions around the world. The most recent assessment report says that the earth’s average temperature has risen by 0. 74 degrees in the period from 1906 to 2005, and that the average temperature will continue to rise. There have also been more violent downpours, sea levels have risen and the ice at the world’s poles and on its mountains is melting. The rising sea level is flooding the low-lying countries inAsiaand small islands in the Pacific. This may lead to the displacement of millions of people, loss of millions of land and consequently billions of dollars.Troubled by the serious situation, world leaders came together for the 2015 United Nations (UN) Climate Change Conference inParis. The climate talks led to 196 countries reaching a landmark agreement that will, for the first time, commit nearly every country to lowering planet-warming greenhouse gas emissions to address global climate change. That was certainly an encouraging step forward for our earth and mankind! As the world leaders continue to commit themselves to monitor our sick planet, we need to continue to take small steps to heal the world. We are left with not much of a choice. If only we could just pack our bags and migrate to Mars!4. What does paragraph 2 mainly talk about?A. The information of industrial revolution.B. The greenhouse gases in the atmosphere.C. The reasons of climate change.D. The result of extreme weather events.5. What can we infer from the last paragraph?A. We have made great achievements.B. Some measures are still required to take.C. Mars is suitable for people’s living.D. Some countries will receive urgent aid.6. Which can be a suitable title for the text?A. Long Live Planet Earth!B.Environment Changes Rapidly!C. What Serious Global Warming!D. How Important the UN Agreement Is!7. Which of the following shows the structure of the whole text?A. B.C. D.CIf you go into the forest with friends, stay with them. If you don’t, you may get lost. If you get lost, this is what you should do. Sit down and stay where you are. Don’t try to find your friends—let them findyou. You can help them find you by staying in one place. There is another way to help your friends or other people to find you. You can shout or whistle three times. Stop. Then shout or whistle three times again. Any signal given three times is a call for help.Keep up shouting or whistling. Always three times together. When people hear you, they will know that you are not just making a noise for fun. They will let you know that they have heard your signal. They will give you two shouts or two whistles. When a signal is given twice, it is an answer to a call for help.If you don’t think that you will get help before night comes, try to make a little house with branches(树枝). Make yourself a bed with leaves and grass. When you need some water, you have to leave your little branch house to look for it. Don’t just walk away. Pick off small branches and drop them as you walk in order to go back again easily. When you are lost, the most important thing to do is to stay in one place.8. If you get lost in the forest, you should _________.A. try to find your friends in no timeB. stay in one place and give signalsC. walk around the forestD. shout as loudly as possible9. Which signal is a call for help?A. Crying twice.B. Shouting here and there.C. Whistling everywhere in the forest.D. Shouting or whistling three times together.10. When you hear two shouts or two whistles, you know that _________.A. someone needs your helpB. something terrible will happenC. people will come to help youD. someone is afraid of an animal11. What’s the meaning of the last paragraph?A. Use branches to make a bed.B. Drop branches to look for water.C. Pick off branches to build another house.D. Leave branches to help you find your way back.DScientists have made great discoveries. But how have they influenced our personal lives? Do kids in your classroom even know when Einstein lived? You may be wondering: but why is it important to teachkids about modern-day scientists?First, stories of scientists can encourage kids. Chris Hadfield is a Canadian who went to space, and he’s a real, guitar-playing person. He makes singing videos on YouTube! His story can make kids think scientists are also common people. Hearing scientists’ stories makes kids think “I can do that too!”But not only that, the stories of famous scientists can encourage kids to never give up. Bill Nye was always refused when trying to be an astronaut. But today, he’s made a lot of successes in his role as a popular science educator and engineer. Besides, it’s no secret that scientific discoveries require trying, and trying again.Another way some scientists can encourage kids is through their diversity. Neil deGrasse Tyson, for example, is an African-American, which is not common in his field. Such stories can make kids think anyone can be a scientist. It’s important to know that scientists don’t need to be “gifted” or “good” at school. Often we consider a scientist as being an extremely smart kid at school. That doesn’t have to be true. They just need to have a great interest in science. Telling students stories of scientists can encourage them to show interest in science. As long as they’re interested, they are likely to become a scientist in the future.Modern scientists teach kids that knowledge builds upon the foundation others have laid. This is important — no one can do it alone. Scientists’ stories can encourage today’s young scientists to keep trying. They’ll be encouraged not to give up on the dream of making discoveries. Even if they haven’t made important discoveries, their research may help the following scientists.12. What can Chris Hadfield’s story tell students?A. Scientists are interested in different things.B. Students should have a hobby of their own.C. Scientists can be ordinary like people around us.D. Students should consider scientists as their models.13. Which of the following would the author agree with?A. African-Americans are more likely to become scientists.B. Scientists are not necessarily very smart at school.C. Not all scientists really show interest in science.D. Scientists are usually good at their schooling.14. The last paragraph shows us that ________.A. scientists should help each otherB. a scientist should never give up tryingC. making discoveries is necessary for scientistsD. new scientific discoveries may be based on others’ findings15. What is the text mainly about?A. Why scientists are important to us.B. Why students should be taught about scientists.C. Why students love stories of scientists.D. Why scientists can encourage students.第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。

These promotions might not be totally random, and are actually seen as a vital part of the marketing process. The question is: How do social media influencers ‘influence’ what you buy?Human desire for status and making friends, combined with our need to belong to a group, makes us receptive to being ‘socially influenced’. Companies often use that desire to have a similar lifestyle to a celebrity we admire to sell or launch a product. So, what do these promotions actually do?Firstly, they can be used to build brand awareness. A social media influencer should have a strong understanding of the platform they operate on, and therefore can create appealing content that not only sticks to the brand image, but sparks their followers’ interests in a product they might never have seen before.Secondly, influencers can improve a company or product’s relationship with their customer base. According to InMoment’s 2018 US Retail CX Trends Report on customer loyalty, 77% of buyers have been brand loyal for more than ten years. This is also true of 60% of millennials. A popular celebrity can target key customers and talk or blog about a product, which can create an instant and lasting bond with them.Lastly, influencers can improve customer buying habits with seemingly ‘unbiased opinions’. We are more likely to respond to ‘peer recommendation’ than traditional ads, meaning the fact we see an influencer as a ‘friend’ can make us less likely to be doubtful about what we are seeing. So, the next time you see a celebrity talking about a product, you might want to consider that this could be acarefully worked-out marketing strategy designed to target your core needs. If you find yourself examining a product you’ve seen on social media, you may well have been influenced.4. Why do companies invite celebrities to launch products?A. Because celebrities can improve the companies’ public images.B. Because consumers like to share similarity with celebrities.C. Because celebrities want to make more money.D. Because consumers can make friends with celebrities.5. According to the passage, which strategy is often used by influencers?A. Setting up operation platforms.B. Sending gifts to customers.C. Improving relationship with the company.D. Taking advantage of their popularity.6. To customers, the recommendations of influencers seem to be ________.A. offensiveB. subjectiveC. objectiveD. misleading7. The passage is mainly about ________.A. how social media make adsB. how social media influence our lifestyleC. how social influencers affect our buyingD. how celebrities earn fameCA Bridge Linking Art and the AudienceAccording to a 2018 report, people aged between 16 and 24 make up about 15 percent of the population but only 10 percent of museum-goers. Similarly, people aged over35 go half as much as you would expect from their population size. We have reached the point of recognising the disconnection between art and the audience but haven’t yet determined how to bridge the gap. Two answers to tackling this challenge lie in telling a greater diversity of art histories and communicating these stories in more accessible ways.In 2018, a radio program called Art Matters was started with the aim of discussing art from a pop-culture viewpoint with topics that would engage younger and more diverse audience. It offers an accessible pathway to art history with conversations on different topics. Art history is about storytelling; art content shines when there is an effort to bring audience along for the discussion.More traditional institutions are paying attention. Recently theGettyMuseumissued a social-media challenge for people to recreate paintings using items they had at home. Users displayed incredible creativity, and the museum was flooded with submissions. This reaction proves that there is a potential desire for the audience to engage with art topics if the format is appealing. Since many people feelintimidatedand think that there’s a baselevel of understanding required to join the conversation, the Getty initiative serves as a reminder that there are many pathways to engaging with it.Another result of the Getty challenge was the exposure given to a diversity of artworks. The famous opera singer Peter Brathwaite, for example, made scores of attractive recreations highlighting centuries of black paintings. His efforts opposed the idea that there were not many historical paintings of black figures. It is extremely important that we do a better job of showing the complex and diverse stories that are represented in art.Social media have offered a platform for people who have not traditionally had a seat at the table. Anyone can recognise a gap in the field and address it. Accounts have gathered tens of thousands of followers. They are the proof that there is hunger to hear these art histories, and these themes work brilliantly for museum programming. But there is only so much that can be done without the museums and galleries changing meaningfully from within. We need to see a better balance of these stories represented in permanent collections. We also need a much wider diversity of people and interests represented on board. Ensuring that art-and writing and talking about art-is able to continue on the rising generation of storytellers, inside and outside of institutions, getting the funding and support they need to paint a brighter picture for the part.8. What challenge is the author trying to tackle?A. People doubt a great diversity of artworks.B. Fewer and fewer young people go to museums.C. Art appears too distant from common audience.D. Adult audience has a different understanding of art.9. What does the underlined word “intimidated” in Paragraph 3 probably mean?A. Tired.B. Worried.C. Annoyed.D. Surprised.10. In the author’s opinion, the museums and galleries should ________.A. make the art history stories accessible in a traditional way.B. change meaningfully for activities like the Getty challenge.C. limit the number of storytellers both in and out of institutions.D. improve the permanent collections by adding famous artworks.11. We can conclude from the passage that common audience ________.A. lacks the channels to understand and talk about art history.B. prefers to view artworks and hear art stories on social media.C. feels satisfied with people and interests represented on board.D. refuses to engage with diverse art topics and art history stories.DFor years, Zach Ault, a father of three, enjoyed being physically active. He was even training for a half-marathon. But in 2017, he took time off to recover from an infection. After recovering, he tried to continue his runs but could not complete them. He was not able to spend time with his children. He had to cut back his job. Even sleeping as much as 16 hours a day made no difference in his condition.“His body had literally hijacked him and it wasn't going to allow him to push through, ” said Anne Ault, his wife. After months of testing, doctors announced their result-chronic fatigue syndrome, a disease that makes an individual feel extremely tired. This fatigue lasts more than six months and becomes worse after any kind of physical exertion (费力活动). Patients may have difficulty standing upright. They also may have trouble thinking, often described as a “brain fog”. There are no approvedtreatments, or even tests to help with diagnosis. There is no way to predict who will recover and who will have a severe case that lasts for years. Now the doctors at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) are conducting a unique study to learn more about the condition. Zach Ault is one of the subjects in the study. When Ault rides an exercise bicycle, scientists measure how his leg muscles use oxygen. Afterward, doctors fit a special cap on Ault's head to measure electrical activity in his brain. They then send him to spend the night in an air-tight room where air has been removed with pipe for additional study. Scientists measure oxygen and carbon dioxide levels to tell how much energy Ault is using, minute by minute. “We're figuring out how his body adjusts to an exercise load, or a stress load.”“It's hard not knowing if or when I'm going to recover, ” he said. But Ault says the study did help him learn about the disease. And it gave him ideas about how to save up his energy.12. What was Zach Ault's life like before 2017?A. He was fond of exercising.B. He won several half-marathons.C. He spent much time lying in bed.D. He was busy looking after his children.13. How did the infection affect Zach Ault?A. He lost his job.B. He was unable to sleep.C. He became too weak to do sports.D. He was tired of running a half-marathon.14. What can we learn about chronic fatigue syndrome?A. It usually lasts no more than months.B. It is likely to cause thinking disorders.C. Patients with it need to stay in bed all day long.D. Patients with it should avoid any kind of exercise.15. What does Zach Ault think of the study?A. It helped him cure his illness.B. It helped him recover and stay fit.C. It taught him how to enjoy cycling.D. It brought him new ideas about fighting diseases.第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。

Choosing a suitable support group.BAccording to statistics published by the BPI (Buying Power Index) a couple of months ago, digital streaming (流媒体) now accounts for 80 percent of the music consumption in the UK. Despite the incredible growth of online streaming platforms like iTunes, Apple Music and Tidal over the past 15 years, a more traditional medium has also seen a return of interest and sales in the music industry. In 2020, almost one in five of all albums purchased in the UK is vinyl (黑胶唱片), and it has once again become the most popular physical musical medium. With digital streaming so easy and convenient, why are so many peopledrawn to traditional records? Some experts claim that vinyl is a physical medium for experiencing music, something tangible (有形的) to hold and own. For most people, having something tangible and interacting with it gives depth to the experience of music. Listening to an album and touching it the way the artist intended can make them feel more connected to the music and the artist. Records are physical products that can be not only displayed but also gifted, shared, traded and passed down through generations.Sound quality is another hot topic. A lot of music lovers feel that the analogue sound (模拟声音) vinyl offers is superior to modern digital audio, particularly with regards to the compressed formats streaming platforms use. There’s a common belief that old-school analogue audio has a warmer, fuller sound than digitised music. For vinyl followers, the very defect traditional recorders often have, such as the familiar crackle (劈啪作响) when the record starts, bring the music to life in a different way. There’s aritualisticaspect to vinyl that a lot of people are drawn to, too. The act of putting a record on—carefully removing the record from the sleeve, placing it on the record player and gently dropping the needle on the right groove (凹槽)—is a more assiduous (一丝不苟的), mindful way of engaging with music. When you’relistening to vinyl, you can’t tap abutton and go about your day while the streaming service provides hours of music. You need to stay close to the record player to move the needle and flip the record over. It’s clear that the vinyl interest is well underway, and vinyl records are truly making a comeback. In an increasingly digital society, there’s something to be said for analogue experiences. Perhaps one of the great things about being alive in the 21st century is our ability to have the best of both worlds—the timeless appeal of physical records alongside the easy access to vast music libraries that streaming offers.4. What are the statistics published by the BPI used to show?A. An increase in music consumption.B. The recovery of music industry.C. A comeback of a physical medium.D. The acceptance of online streaming.5. According to some experts, why does vinyl interest many people?A. It attracts people by its realistic feel.B. It offers simple access to different music.C. It shares a new way to enjoy music.D. It provides people with perfect sound effect.6. The underlined word “ritualistic” in Para.4 means something ______.A. Overlooked by society.B. Updated very frequently.C. Performed as part of a ceremony.D. Kept for a long time without changing.7. How does the writer feel about the future development of music medium?A. Traditional records will get underway.B. The analogue experiences may matter more.C. Vinyl sales will boom with technological advance.D. There should be a good mix of old and new.CScientists have discovered a new behaviour among bumblebees that tricks plants into flowering early. When lack of pollen, bumblebees will bite little by little on the leaves of flower-less plants. The damage seems to fool the plant into flowering, sometimes up to 30 days earlier than normal. With their hairy appearance and special sounds, bumblebees are hard to miss in gardens all over the world. Their hairy bodies make them excellent pollinators for crops like tomatoes and blueberries. They are among the first bees to appear each year and work a long season. But despite their key role, bumblebees, like many other pollinators have seen their numbers decline suddenly in recent decades. One recent study pointed to climate change, reporting that an increasing number of hot days in Europe andNorth Americawas raising local bumblebees extinction rates. But researchers have now made a discovery about bumblebees that could have something to do with their long term survival. Scientists inSwitzerlandfound that when the bumblebees were out of pollen, they started to bite on the leaves of plants that hadn't yet flowered. They used their mouths to cut clearly-shaped holes in the leaves. But the creatures didn't eat the material or use it in their nests. The damaged plants responded by flowering earlier than normal--in some cases up to 30 days ahead of schedule. Researchers also found that the bee damaged plants flowered 30 days earlier than undamaged plants and 25 days earlier than ones damaged by the scientists.“I think everything that we've found is consistent with the idea that the bumblebees are damaging the plants and that that's an adaptation that brings flowers earlier and that benefits the bees,” said Dr Mark Mescher, one of the authors from ETHZurich.8. How do bumblebees fool plants into flowering earlier?A. By making use of the hot weather.B. By putting the false flowers on the leaves.C. By attacking the leaves of flowerless plants.D. By taking away the pollen from the other flowers.9. What's bumblebees’ key role?A.Making plants flower early.B. Spreading pollen to flowers and plants.C. Sending information about weather change.D. Finding out whether the plant has flowers.10. What has happened to bumblebees in the past the years?A. They are becoming homesick.B. They are not as friendly as before.C. There is a sharp decrease in number.D. They have been busy year by year.11. What's Dr Mark Mescher's attitude towards the behaviour of bumblebees?A. Uncaring.B. Skeptical.C. Tolerant.D. Objective.DEach year, the women of Olney and Liberal compete in an unusual footrace. Dressed in aprons (围裙) and headscarves, they wait at both towns’starting lines. Each woman holds a frying pan with one pancake inside. Atthe signal, the women flip (轻抛) pancakes and they’re off! This “pancake racing” tradition is said to have started on Shrove Tuesday, 1445, in Olney. Shrove Tuesday is the day beforethe Christian season of Lent (大斋戒) begins. During Lent, many people decide to give up sugary or fatty foods.Legend says that in 1445, an Olney woman was making pancakes to use up some of her sugar and cooking fats before Lent. She lost track of time and suddenly heard the church bells ring, signaling the beginning of the Shrove Tuesday service. Realizing that she was going to be late for church, she raced out the door still wearing her apron and headscarf and holding her frying pan with a pancake in it. In the following years, the woman’s neighbors imitated her dash to church, and pancake racing was born. The rules are simple. Racers must wear the traditional headscarf and apron. They must flip their pancakes twice - once before starting and once after crossing the finish line. After the race, there are Shrove Tuesday church services. Then Liberal and Olney connect through a video call to compare race times and declare a winner. In both towns, the races have grown into larger festivals. Olney’s festival is an all-day event starting with a big pancake breakfast. Liberal’s festival lasts four days and includes a parade, a talent show, and contests that feature eating and flipping pancakes. Although the women’s race is still the main event, both towns now hold additional races for boys and girls of all ages.12. How did pancake racing start?A. A woman in Olney created it.B. Women made pancakes before Lent.C. A woman dashed to church with a pancake.D. People followed the suit of an interesting incident.13. What should racers obey during the race?A. They can flip their pancakes in the middle of the race.14. What can we learn about the race from the last paragraph?A. People can show their talent in Olney festival.B. People can enjoy a one-day holiday in Liberal.C. The race is not only intended for women now.D. People can have a big pancake breakfast in both towns.15. What is the text mainly about?A.

AChildren under the age of 18 will be allowed up to three hours per week to play video games, according to a notice issued by China's National Press and Publication Administration. Online game companies are required to provide services to minors — from8 to 9 p. m. on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays and legal holidays — as a way to safeguard their physical and mental health. Children are playing more and more online games these days. Is it time to limit their online gaming time? What role do parents have? Readers share their opinions.RizlaredOnline games are addictive, but if children are taught how to manage in a sensible and responsible manner then it is no longer a threat(威胁).To achieve this, parents need to set examples for not being glued to their phones. Teaching is and always will be the best solution to such problems.AndrewGood policy. By limiting time spent on online games, kids can spend time doing more useful things to develop their potential. They can go outside and run, jump and swim instead of sitting on a couch at home and playing with a smart phone.AdamIt is often seen that parents argue with children over cellphones. Most parents can hardly set and enforce the time limit for its daily usage. Some forcibly take away their cellphones, but it will ruin trust and relationship. Even worse, it will make their kids hate them.PinkExcessive(过度的)gaming is purely a waste of time and energy for minors and has a negative effect on both physical and mental health. The gaming industry should not put profit- flaking interests as its priority (优先事项) . They should act in a socially responsible way toprovide an environment for children to ensure their well-being and development.LaurenThere would be a loophole(漏洞). Children could use their parents’ or other adults’ IDs to avoid real-name registration, thus making it impossible to put this policy in effect. Parents ly need to strengthen guidance andsupervision to keep their children from gaming addiction.1. What should kids do according to Andrew?A. Play online games.B. Play with a smart phone.C. Study all the time.D. Go in for outside activities.2. What does Pink advise the gaming industry to do?A. Pay attention to its profit.B. Focus on kids’ health.C. Be responsible for kids’ surroundings.D. Persuade kids lo play more games.3. What role do parents have according to the passage?A. They keep hold of their phones.B. They set examples for their kids.C. They limit their kids’ time.D. They blame kids for addiction.BWhen my friend suggested going to the op shop (二手商店),instantly I thought “I hope no one I know sees me”. It was the same when my cousin commented on my new furniture and Japanese, fine-bone-china bowls and asked where I got them. They were from the local op shop but instead I said “from the antique shop”.Many people in my Greek-Cypriot community would look down on me if I said I shopped at the op shop. They may pity me, consider me poor, a failure. Immigrants sacrificed their families and homes for a better life. Buying a house and having enough money to live comfortably, to educate your children and see them also live comfortably, are a big part of the immigrant dream, But has this dream made us materialistic at the cost of our own planet? Our love for purchasing the latest trendy clothes or furniture, then donating them when we are tired of them has become normal. I was once like this. But after watching the documentaryThe True CostI learned donated clothes that don’t get sold are sent to developing nations, many of them ending up in landfills (垃圾填埋地). In addition, your new dress requires electricity and materials to make. But if you buy a second-hand dress, that’s one less dress in a landfill and one less new dress to be made.A friend introduced me to op shopping only a few years ago. My firstitem was a dress she gifted me. It was lovely and I loved it. Nobody could tell it was second-hand. This opened me up to purchasing more second-hand high quality branded clothes. Once I visited a friend and was impressed by how she decorated her apartment. “It’s all second-hand,” she said. I couldn’t believe it. The truth is a lot of things sold at the op shop are in new or almost new condition. That’s when I made the decision to only buy second-hand things.Selling second-hand things isn’t anything new butwhat the planet needs is more buyers. There is so much excess (过量) production in the world. So stop feeling ashamed, and let’s get shopping.4. What kind of feeling is expressed in Paragraph 1?A. Pride.B. Embarrassment.C. Delight.D. Sympathy.5. Whatare many people in the author’s community like?A. They are probably materialistic.B. They care about the environment.C. They think highly of op shopping.D. They look down upon immigrants.6. What was the author encouraged to do after visiting her friend’s apartment?A. Watch the documentaryThe True Cost.B. Donate more to local charities.C. Avoid shopping too much.D. Stop buying new things.7. What’s the purpose of the text?A. To entertain.B. To advertise.C. To persuade.D. To describe.COne day when I was 5, my mother criticized me for not finishing my rice and I got angry. I wanted to play outside and not to be made to finish eating my old rice. In my angry motion to open the screen door (纱门) with my foot, I kicked back about a 12-inch part of the lower left hand corner of the new screen door. But I had no regret, for I was happy to be playing in the backyard with my toys.Today, I know if my child had done what I did, I would have criticized my child, and told him about how expensive this new screen door was, and I would have delivered a spanking (打屁股) for it. But my parents never said a word. They left the corner of the screen door pushed out, creating an opening, a crack in the defense against unwanted insects. For years, every time I saw that corner of the screen, it would remind me of my mistake from time to time. For years, I knew that everyone in my family would see that hole and remember who did it. For years, every time I saw a fly buzzing in the kitchen, I would wonder if it came in through the hole that I had created with my angry foot. I would wonder if my family members were thinking the same thing, silently blaming me every time a flying insectentered our home, making life more terrible for us all. My parents taught me a valuable lesson, one that a spanking or stern (严厉的) words perhaps could not deliver. Their silent punishment for what I had done delivered a hundred stern messages to me. Aboveall, it has helped me become a more patient person and not burst out soeasily.8. When the author damaged the door, his parents _______.A. scolded him for what he had doneB. left the door unrepairedC. told him how expensive it wasD. gave him a spanking9. How did the author feel every time he saw the damaged door?A. He felt ashamed of his uncontrolled anger at that time.B. He found that his family members no longer liked him.C. He found it destroyed the happy atmosphere at his home.D. He felt he had to work hard to make up for (弥补) the damage.10. The experience may cause the author _______.A. to hide his anger away from othersB. not to go against his parents’ willC. to have a better control of himselfD. not to make mistakes in the future11. What of the following is the main idea of this passage?A. Adults should ignore their children’s bad behavior.B. Parents shouldn’t educate their children.C. What is the best way to become a more patient person?D. Silent punishment may have a better effect on educating people.DAfter finishing his dinner, Lin Xu opened a WeChat mini-programcalled "Clear Plate" on his phone and took a picture of the empty plates. He was then awarded 157 credit points after the image was uploaded and recognized by artificial intelligence. The credit points can be used to buy gifts, such as books, cellphones and red wine, or to purchase charity meals donated to children in poor rural areas. The "Clear Plate" mini-program has become popular among young Chinese. I have heard just about as much complaint about today’s workplace I can take Contrary to the view young people seem to have that things were better for prior generations, the fact is that there have never been so many greats job for people wanting to enter the workforce. There are educational opportunities that have never exist before , and the standard of living is getting better all the time. Frankly, people who lack courage and commitment shouldn’t blame anyone but themselves for not taking the opportunities that are there for them.My first job was working as a trashman . I hauled trash for six years before I got promoted to the position of manager. I wasn’t scared of hard work. By the time the day was finished , my shoulder would hurt ,but I never complainted I even assisted others and worked extra hours when I was needed .Unfortunately , young people today seem to be lacking the same desire I had to work hard.I can boast that I never quit a job without being offered a better one. The book Black Like Me by John Howard Griffin, a white American writer, records the trip that he _ventured_to experience discrimination based on skin colour by __disguising_ himself as a Negro. Before his experiment, Griffin had already lived an _extraordinary__ life. Blinded for ten years through _shell__shock, he wrote two novels on a typewriter. In 1959 Griffin decided to turn himself into a Negro. At that time, African-Americans in the Deep South were still suffering from the __appalling_disadvantages in many aspects. His six weeks’ life as a Negro is horrible. His amazing story _exposes_ the racist treatment towards the black people. Small __humiliations_ are routine. Discrimination towards Negros is _sanctioned_ and many crimes are likely to go unpunished. There is daily encounter with unmasked hatred. In his epilogue, Griffin emphasizes that the whites could not see any black man as a human _individual__ and he holds that racial discrimination remains increasing rather than _absolute_.
Without water, no life would be possible on this planet. Ancient cultures and civilizations --worshipped-- water and--equated-- it with life force. But conventional science treats water as a --lifeless --substance and promotes reproducibility as the basic premise of science. It is impossible for water to be always--reproducible-- , so the testing of natural phenomena concerning water becomes very difficult. Water has an ability to shape organic forms. Due to its natural desire to flow in --spirals--, the tissue of human heart and arteries is formed with a twist and the fibres of the tissue can run in a spiralling way so that blood also can spiral by flowing through these vessels. Moreover, water can have the memory of water phenomenon.Water molecules often form clusters by attaching themselves to each other. These clusters are so --sensitive--that they will be impressed by any vibrational influence and store such information. Thus water will take on the --imprints--of environmental pollutants and transfer them to people when they drink it. Therefore conventional water and sewage treatment systems are not adequate. Tap water, though --chemically--clean, still convey the --vibrational--pattern of toxins and chemicals to the human body.
Iron ore, the fifth _abundant_element on earth was not fully recognized as a useful natural source before the Hittites learned the way to _derive_iron from ore. With the development of metallurgy, iron was strengthened and hardened through heating over a bed of charcoal. However, the steel produced in this way might __rust__ in __humid__ air. And when the steel was employed in guns, the spinning of the bullet would lead to __erosion__in the gun barrel, which inevitably affects the __accuracy_of shooting. So in 1908, Harry Brearley was __commissioned__ to find ways to ___eliminate__ the erosion in steel. Months passed before Brearley one day accidentally noticed that some samples __tossed__ into a junk pile still kept the ____luster__ after a long time. This discovery helped him eventually solve the problem and thus “rustless steel”came into being. Later the name was changed into “stainless steel”when a manufacturer found the steel might be kept from staining after being dipped into vinegar.。
