But Blanche Caffiere, a very kind librarian and teacher I've never written about publicly before, also had a huge influence on me.When I first met Mrs. Caffiere, she was the elegant and engaging school librarian at Seattle's View Ridge Elementary School, and I was a shy fourth grader. I was desperately trying to go unnoticed, because I had some big deficits, like terrible handwriting and a messy desk. And I was trying to hide the fact that I liked to read something that was cool for girls but not for boys.Mrs. Caffiere took me under her wing and helped make it okay for me to be a messy and nerdy boy who was reading lots of books. She pulled me out of my shell by sharing her love of books. She started by asking questions like “What do you like to read?” and “What are you interested in?”. Then she found me a lot of books—ones that were more complex and challenging than Tom Swift Jr.'s science fiction books I was reading at the time. For example, she gave me great biographies she had read. Once I'd read them, she would make time to discuss them with me. She sincerely listened to what I was saying. Through those conversations about books in the library and in the classroom we became good friends.Looking back on it now, there's no question that my time with Mrs. Caffiere helped spark my interest in libraries [the first large-scale effort of Melinda and me in philanthropy(慈善)] and my focus on helping every child in America get the benefit of great teachers. It's remarkable how much power one good person can have in shaping the life of a child.4.We can learn from the passage that the author was before he met Mrs. Caffiere.A.a student who wanted to drop out of schoolB.not able to read and writeC.hated by other boysD.not self-confident5.What does the underlined word deficits in Paragraph 2 most probably mean?A.Accidents.B.Strengths.C.Problems.D.Concerns.6.Mrs. Caffiere helped the author by.A.sharing reading reflections with himB.telling him he was not a messy boyC.hiding him in the libraryD.listening to his complaint7.What is the last paragraph mainly about?A.The author's interest in libraries.B.Mrs. Caffiere's influence on the author's life.C.The author's achievements later in his life.D.The importance of a good person in society.C(2021山东师范大学附属中学高一上期中,中)Thirteen-year-old Kaylee has a lot of friends—532, actually, if you count up her online friends. And she spends a lot of time with them. But is it possible that Kaylee's online friendships could be making her lonely? That's what some experts believe. Connecting online is a great way to stay in touch, they say. However, some experts worry that many kids are so busy connecting online that they might be missing out on true friendships.Could this be true? During your parents' childhoods, connecting with friends usually meant spending time with them in the flesh. Kids played Scrabble around a table, not Words with Friends on their phones. When friends missed each other, they picked up the telephone. Friends might even write letters to each other.Today, most communication takes place online. A typical teen sends 2,000 texts a month and spends more than 44 hours per week in front of a screen. Much of this time is spent on social media platforms(平台).In fact, in many ways, online communication can make friendships stronger. “There's definitely a positive influence. Kids can stay in constant contact, which means they can share more of their feelings with each other,” says Katie Davis, co-author of The App Generation.Other experts, however, warn that too much online communication can get in the way of forming deep friendships. “If we are constantly checking in with our virtual worlds, we will have little time for our real-world friendships,” says Larry Rosen, a professor at California State University. Rosen also worries that today's kids might mistake the “friends” on the social media for true friends in life. However, in tough times, you don't need someone to like your picture or share your blogs. You need someone who will keep your secrets and hold your hand. You would like to talk face to face.8.What is the purpose of the first paragraph?A.To summarize the text.B.To talk about true friends.C.To bring up a discussion.D.To encourage online friendship.9.What does the underlined part “in the flesh” mean in Paragraph 3?A.In any case.B.In person.C.In full measure.D.In advance.10.What is Katie's attitude towards online communication?A.Worried.B.Unconcerned.C.Confused.D.Positive.11.What view does Rosen hold?A.It's wise to turn to friends online.B.It's easier to develop friendships in reality.C.Teenagers need focus on real-world friendships.D.Social media help people stay closely connected.D(中)Teenagers in the US know they'll probably need technical skills to land good jobs, but a new survey suggests that interest in technical careers may be decreasing (减少).The percentage of boys aged 13 to 17 who are interested in science, technology, engineering and math(or STEM)careers dropped from 36 percent in 2017 to 24 percent this year, according to a survey by Junior Achievement USA. The percentage of girls interested in STEM careers stayed unchanged at 11 percent. But the 1,000 survey participants still named technology as one of two key skills that would be necessary for preparing them for their future careers.“Kids don't understand where technology can be applied outs ide of computers, coding (编码) and maybe robotics,” said Tammera L. Holmes, president of aviation consulting firm AeroStar Consulting Corporation. “That's all they know, so they can't really link that interest to career pathways (职业道路).”When Holmes was in high school, her mom sent her to an event that featured (以……为特色) the Tuskegee Airmen, famous military (军事的)pilots from World War Ⅱ. One of the pilots took her for air travel. “I was 16 years old, flying over Lake Michigan and facing down the skyline, and I knew immediately that was the career for me,” she said.Women remain outnumbered by men in fields like technology. For people working to increase the number of women in these areas, the lack of growth in girls' interest in STEM careers is concerning.“Teenage girls are more interested than their male classmates in pursuing (追求) careers in which they can help others,” said Ed Grocholski from Junior Achievement. “Even with all theprograms aimed at increasing girls' interest in STEM, I don't think we really talk that much about how we improve people's lives through STEM,” said Grocholski.“Society needs to do better in making those connections for kids,” said Katherine Latham, the founder of an engineering firm. She used civil engineering (土木工程) as an example of a career that would continue to be crucial. However, the fact that students knew they would need technical skills in their future careers was encouraging. The second skill they said they would need is relationship-building.“That's going to be the new breed (类型) of engineers,” said Latham.12.What is the reason behind kids' falling interest in technical careers?A.They find technical careers too boring.B.They find technical skills are less important than before.C.They can't connect their interest with future careers.D.They don't think technical careers are rewarding enough.13.What started Holmes' interest in her current career?A.A documentary about the life of pilots.B.A summer camp for trainee pilots.C.Her parents' wish for her to become a pilot.D.Her flight experience with a pilot.14.According to Grocholski, teenage girls are more interested in careers that .A.can improve people's livesB.will make them look beautifulC.are different from those of their parentsD.can socialize more with other people15.What is the article mainly about?A.The popularity of technical careers among kids and its reasons.B.The change of kids' interest in technical careers and the reasons behind it.C.The different careers boys and girls in the US will pursue.D.Some examples of kids pursuing technical careers successfully.第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。

Marathon training is terrible and takes over your life. It’s running all the time,” I argued.I couldn’t change her mind. So I told her that she should at least do it right: choose a right race and I’d run with her. Finally, we chose the Honolulu Marathon. It took place in Hawaii, a beautiful place. It’s one of the 10 largest marathons in the world, with nearly 22,000 finishers each year. But more importantly, a full 35 percent of them are first-timers. And Honolulu’s course has no cut-off, staying open until the last runner finishes. The race seemed perfect for green runners like Stephanie.Although I have run plenty of my own races, I was surprised by the amount of pressure I felt in this one. Being in charge of your own race is one thing. Being the boss of someone else is another. It was my job to encourage her and make decisions for her while she came across difficulties and wanted to give up during the race. I felt a huge responsibility that her dream of running across the finish line was in my hands. The Honolulu Marathon day proved to be hot and sunny. The temperature hit 82 degrees Fahrenheit. The sun was strong; shade (树荫) was little and far between. After running for more than four hours, Stephanie was showing signs of heat exhaustion (中暑). I told her to walk until I was sure it was safe for her to keep running again.Soon, the finish line was in sight and as we crossed the line, we hugged, and tears flowed. I knew why Stephanie was crying. It’s amazing when you complete something you never thought possible.4. What was the author’s attitude towards Stephanie’s running a marathon at first?A. Negative.B. What does the author mainly talk about in Paragraph 4?A. The author’s skill in completing a marathon.B. The success of Stephanie’s first marathon race.C. The difficulty in running a marathon for Stephanie.D. The importance of taking a rest during a tough marathon.CMost sun bears have short, black hair, though some are more reddish or grayer in color. Most of these bears have a V-shaped area of light hair under their necks, which is different in color from cream to yellowish-brown. These bears don’t get their name because they love to work with this color of hair. Nor are they called sun bears because of their sunny disposition (性情). Instead, their name comes from the V-shaped part under their necks, which is commonly yellowish in color. The part looks a bit like a rising sun.Of all the kinds of bears, sun bears are the smallest. They measure just 47 to 59 inches long. Though small, they have a very long tongue, which measures 8 to 10 inches long. Why such a long tongue? Long tongues are particularly useful when they are trying to reach the food deep down in a piece of wood or catching other insects (昆虫), or when they are trying to clean every bit of honey they have found.Sun bears are very dependent upon feeding on bees and honey. Insects make up a large part of their diet, and they commonly feed on ants and young insects. Fruits and nuts also make up a part of some meals, and they are particularly fond of figs (a soft sweet fruit). In some areas, fruits make up nearly half of the bears’ diet. When given the opportunity, they will also hunt birds, turtles, eggs, and deer for food.Unlike some other bear species, sun bears are active all year round. Food can be found all the time in rain forests, so they don’t need to fell into a deep sleep to spend the whole winter. Sadly, today people cut down rain forests for wood, or to make room for agricultural (农业的) development, reducing the number of living places suitable for sun bears. At the same time, some people hunt the bears to sell their coats and other body parts on the black market.8. Why were sun bears given such a name?A. They are friendly and lovely.B. They love doing something in the sun.C. Some of their hair feels as warm as the sun.D. Part of their hair looks like the sun in color and shape.9. What can be learned about the tongue of sun bears?A. It’s mainly used to break down food.B. It is the smallest of all kinds of bears’.C. It greatly helps them search for food.D. It reaches half of their body in length.10. What’s the feature of sun bears’ eating habits?A. They tend to waste food.B. They feed on various things.C. They prefer fruits to other things.D. They like catching insects for young bears.11. What can we conclude about sun bears from the last paragraph?A. Humans often fail to find them in winter.B. They are less seen on the black market now.C. They are good at storing food for the winter.D. Human activities have become a big danger to them.DOur teenagers are lonely. A new study by Harvard’s Making Caring Common (MCC) shows just how that reeling has been common and become serious during the past year when we had to keep the social distance. One year’s online learning and life in the bedrooms rather than the classrooms or dorm rooms can make teenagers feel lonelier than before. Teenagers have been more likely to be influenced by loneliness than older adults.Experiencing loneliness is certainly sad, but it is also perilous. Researchers found that 63% of the young were suffering from bad sleep, anxiety, and poor health during the lockdown (活动限制) and that nearly a quarter had started or increased some bad habits, including smoking, drinking, and staying up late to deal with their feelings.About half of the young people in the study, who said they had felt lonely, explained that over the past weeks not one person had taken more than just a few minutes to ask how they had been lately. It made them feel they had no one who really cared about them. Their parents thought they had much free time after lessons and it seemed that they only worried whether their children could perform their schoolwork at the level they once did. They didn’t know the problem.Sian Leah Beilock, the president of Barnard College, explains that young people depend on social media, which makes them especially weak to social media’s harms. She also suggests that fewer close friends may explain some of the feelings of loneliness. She reports that in 1985 the average American had three close friends with whom they could share important things about their lives. In 2004, that number had dropped to just two friends. And in 2019, one in five millennials (千禧一代)had no friends at all. These levels of loneliness are heartbreaking. MCC suggests, as a nation, we first should focus on teaching the young to make meaningful connections between people and support them.12. What does the underlined word “perilous” in Paragraph 2 probably mean?A. Dangerous.B. Funny.C. Helpful.D. Uncommon.13. What do the young people’s words in the study mean?A. Their parents misunderstood them.B. They found their school work heavy.C. They needed more care and attention.D. Their online courses made them bored.14. Which of the following may Sian Leah Beilock agree with?A. Teenagers are short of outdoor exercise.B. Teenagers should make more close friends in real life.C. Teenagers enjoy developing close relationships online.D. Teenagers should avoid sharing important things online.15. What can be the suitable title for the text?A. How to understand loneliness?B. MCC is improving teenagers’ developmentC. The US teenagers are experiencing lonelinessD. How to carry out online education for teenagers?第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。

And it's an event which some say helped start the Olympic movement in this country. The Cotswold Olimpicks take place every year on a Friday in spring. They are held in a village in England known as the Cotswolds. It isn't clear when the first event took place but some say it was as early as 1612.The Cotswold Olimpicks were the idea of a lawyer called Robert Dover but no one knows exactly why he organized the games. Some people say he wanted to encourage people to support their king and country. Another explanation is that Dover was keen (渴望的) to bring peopletogether, in particular the rich and poor from the local community. Whatever the reason was, the yearly games quickly became popular. People competed in familiar activities such as horse-racing, running, jumping, and wrestling; famous people of the time attended them and poets wrote about the celebrations. It is even said that Shakespeare mentioned the Cotswold Olimpicks in The Merry Wives of Windsor, though the play may have been written some time before the first games. As the Cotswold Olimpicks grew in popularity, a group of people known as the Puritans (清教徒) started to object to them for religious reasons, saying they encouraged bad behaviour. The games came to an end at the start of the English Civil War but in 1660 they were re-introduced. Over time they became more and more popular and there are records of 30,000 people attending in one year. However, the games also attracted people who were more interested in the celebrations than the sporting events. Finally, they came to an end once again in 1852. However, this was not the end of the Cotswold Olimpicks. They were re-introduced again in 1966 and have since been recognized by the British Olympic Committee. Out of respect to their history, the modern games are watched over by a man dressed as Sir Robert Dover, riding on horseback and accompanied by a representative of King James I. Unlike the real Olympic Games, the Cotswold Olimpicks have only about two hours and they are followed by celebrations in the village.1. What can we learn about the Cotswold Olimpicks?A.They last as long as the Olympic Games.B.They are held in different seasons in different years.C.They are closely connected with celebrations.D.They are held at the same place as the Olympic Games.2.The author mentioned Shakespeare and his play in Paragraph 2 to show_____.A.celebrities of the time liked Shakespeare's playsB.the Cotswold Olimpicks were well received at the timeC.the Cotswold Olimpicks were as famous as Shakespeare's playsD.poets of the time liked to take part in the Cotswold Olimpicks games3.Which of the following is Not True according to the passage?A.Fewer and fewer people took part in the games.B.It is said that Shakespeare mentioned the Cotswold Olimpicks in his book.C.Once the Puritans objected to the Cotswold Olimpicks.D.The Cotswold Olimpicks have fewer hours than the real Olympic Games.4.The Cotswold Olimpicks were most influenced by _____.A.Robert DoverB.King James IC.the British Olympic CommitteeD.the English Civil WarThe Climb to the TopMy life as a kid was a sweet life. I lived in a beautiful house with the beautiful surroundings in Puerto Rico. There was one particular thing I loved and it was a huge tree that was in my backyard. As a child, I used to climb the tree every day. Every time I went, I climbed higher and higher, reaching new branches, obstacles, and pathways on my way up. One day, I reached the top and I could see my island. I felt I was on top of the world, and nothing could stop me. Then, there was the day that seemed like the end of my life. This specific day changed my life forever. It was a nice summer day. After breakfast, my family headed to the park to see my baseball game. In the evening we went to a carnival (嘉年华) in my town. My grandma was selling blankets under a tent. Suddenly, the mood of the day changed when my parents took me to my grandma's tent. Still to this day, I remember the exact words my dad said to me, "Son, would you like to move to the United States?" I couldn't believe what he said. I then ran away from him as the tears rolled down my cheeks. My perfect life was being taken away from me.Two weeks later, we arrived in New York in late July, and my aunt and uncle drove us to Springfield, Massachusetts where we lived for seven years. Once we got there, I met my mom's family for the first time. September came and school started. I was afraid to go to a new school and make new friends. Most kids ignored me and some tried to talk to me, but I couldn't understand them or say anything. My first year in the United States was not fun or easy but I worked hard and got through it.Now I'm grown. I look back on the journey that I've been through: living in a new place with no friends, the new language, and the new school. Despite all those problems, I still remember that special tree. That tree taught me to never give up and reach higher. I have beaten every difficulty that I have met in life and I just keep moving forward. His aptitude for outdoor sports is from his father Luo Ge, who actively encourages him to enjoy nature, rather than focusing only on his learning. After noticing that Luo Han did not go out for enough exercise after school, his father took him to do outdoor activities every day. Many applauded them. "Exercise can ease brain fog and improve memory. Do you do what you know is right and go to maths class, take the quiz and all? Or do you give in and go with him?People who are at your age, like your classmates, are called peers. When they try to influence how you act and get you to do something, it's called peer pressure. It's something everyone has to deal with—even adults.Peers influence your life, even if you don't realize it, just by spending time with you. You learn from them, and they learn from you. It's only human nature to listen to and learn from other people in your age group.Peers can have a positive influence on each other. Maybe another student in your science class taught you an easy way to remember the planets in the solar system, or you got others excited about your new favourite book, and now everyone is reading it. Sometimes peers influence each other in negative ways. For example, a few kids in school might try to get you to cut class with them. It's difficult to say "no" to peer pressure, but you can do it. Paying attention to your own feelings and beliefs about what is right and what is wrong can help you know what is the right thing you should do.It can really help to have at least one other peer, or friend, who is willing to say "no" too. If you continue to face peer pressure and you're finding it difficult to handle it, talk to someone you trust—a parent, or a teacher. They can help you feel much better and prepare you for the next time you face peer pressure.1.According to the first paragraph, what is the kid doing?A.Planning some interesting activities after school.B.Making an announcement about a dinner party.C.Persuading kids to take a quiz with him.D.Encouraging other kids to cut class.2.What can be known according to the author?A.For kids, peer pressure may do more harm than good.B.Maths is the most difficult subject for most kids.C.Kids today are under greater pressure than before.D.Peer pressure exists among people of all age groups.3.What is suggested to the readers in the last paragraph?A.Making more close friends while at school.B.Learning to refuse their friends in a polite way.C.Getting support from someone else if necessary.D.Building closer relations with their parents and teachers.4.Whom is the text probably written for?A.The students.B.The parents.C.The teachers.D.The friends.4.I was never very neat, while my roommate Kate was extremely organized. From her end of the conversation, I could tell right away her grandma was seriously ill. When she hung up, she quickly crawled(爬) under her covers, sobbing. 必修1 Modules 1-3综合测试题第一部分阅读理解(共两节,满分35今)第一节(共10小题;每小题2.5分,满分25分)阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C和D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。

AAfter watching the film, Dumplin’, I was given the courage to write about one of the hardest things in my life to talk about. Like Willowdean Dickson, the main character in the movie, I have a problem with my weight and I hated myself for a long time because of it. At first, it was hard for me to understand that I was a fat girl in school. I never felt worthy of love or acceptance just like Willowdean. I felt like I would never find any happiness in life.Body image (形象)is a hard topic to talk about for a lot of people in the United States. Every day, whether it is in the line at the store or online while looking through Facebook, we are told that we need to look a certain way to be happy. Happiness can only be found when an acceptable number is shown on a scale (秤)in weight. The standard of happiness is shown to us as a reminder of how life is “supposed” to be lived. I tried to live by it but I shouldn’t h ave.I beat myself up for years because I always tried to change how people felt about me instead of being worried about how I felt about myself. I, soon, realized that my own opinion mattered most. All I need to worry about is how to make myself happy but not everyone else, because I am the one who has to stand up and look in the mirror every day and see the reflection (影像)of the person that I am on the outside and the inside.Being a heavy girl has made me a better person. I learned how to accept the flaws (缺陷)of others because I have learned to accept my own. The saying “You need to love yourself first before you can truly love others”is so true. Self-love is so important and it needs to be spread among us. Today is the day to show the world that you are truly happy with whoever you are.1. The author mentioned the film Dumplin in Paragraph 1 to _________.A. describe how to find happiness in lifeB. introduce the topic of weight problemsC. explain how to deal with weight problemsD. show the character of Willowdean Dickson2. Since we only had five hours, we decided hitting our favorite places would be the first step of the tour.We really enjoyed our time in LEGO Movie World. If you haven’t been there, I recommend it toyou. There are some fantastic rides that you shouldn’t miss.Ride 1: Unikitty’s Disco Drop. Immediately to the left of the LEGO Movie World entrance, you can find Unikitty’s Disco Drop. Similar to the Beetle Bounce, this ride adds another touch of fun. As you move up and down the tower, the ride also rotates (旋转)!The area is enjoyable as well, with all the crazy Unikitty color mixtures present.Ride 2: Masters of Flight. To the right of Unikitt y’s Disco Drop, there is a huge structure (建筑物). If you’v e seen The LEGO Movie, you’11 recognize this structure as The Dog in Cloud Cuckoo Land, where all the Master Builders meet.To get inside, you’ll have to make your way around a maze (迷宫) to wait for your turn but LEGO does a great job to offer you amusement while you wait. You’11 be greeted by some great structures and provided with a wall to leave your mark on.Once finally inside the structure, you’ll find the Masters of Flight ride. It begins as the seats rotate around and you will find yourself as part of the Emmet’s Triple - Decker Couch Mech! While you experience The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part, get ready to feel like you’re flying! You’ll smell pine trees, the ocean, cotton candy and more! It was certainly my favorite of all the new rides. At the end of the day, I felt Merlin Entertainment did an excellent job in repurposing this area to fit their idea of the LEGO Movie World. It looks fantastic. We are looking forward to coming back to this world.4. When the author’s family experienced Unikitty’s Disco Drop, __________.A. they preferred it to the Beetle BounceB. they had to get through the maze firstC. they found the mixed colors unbeautifulD. they saw the ride rotate5. What can we learn about Masters of Flight?A. People give it high praise.B. People can enjoy flying in it.C. People have to line up to experience it.D. People find it boring to wait in the maze.6. What did the author think of LEGO Movie World?A. Satisfying.B. Boring.C. Time-wasting.D. Disappointing.CMany high school students in the United States get hands-on training in construction (建造)skills by building real houses. One such program was created for construction and design students in Waterloo, Iowa. The students have already received training in many areas of house construction. They have put up walls, and built windows and doors. The program is run by the Waterloo Career Center. It is made for students to get ready for their work in technical fields.Students from the Waterloo Community School District recently took part in construction training that was centered on the skill of masonry (砌石技艺)—work done with stone, brick and other materials. The high school students took part in the training at their school, where they spent five days learning from experienced workers from the Masonry Institute of Iowa. The workers taught the students how to mix mortar(砂浆)and build walls with bricks and blocks. One of the goals forthe students was to build a thick stone post — a strong support to hold pressure.Hunter Pierce was one of the students taking part. He told the Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier newspaper that using the right amount of material is a crucial part of the process. “You put a lot of mortar there so you have a lot of contact, just so in a couple of years it doe sn’t fall apart,” he said.Chris Busch helped make sure that the students made every effort. He told the newspaper that learning such skills would help the students be able to gain their own strong knowledge in their careers. Busch said that, in this kind of hands-on setting, students could learn exactly how much mortar is needed to create a safe wall.7.
