AA German company was concerned about talks in Moscow trying to sell some 100 million dollars worth of equipment to a Russian State company. Talks went smoothly but differences remained. So Martin Bayer himself, the CEO of the German Company, decided to come to Moscow to head the talks. Besides caring about his business, the CEO wanted to go to Russia to hunt bears.Martin Bayer was one of the greatest hunters of our time (and the Russians knew about it). He went to the Sahara more than hundred times and hunted lions, crocodiles; he hunted polar bears in the North Pole and tigers in the rain forests of India. But he had never hunted Russian bears. So the Russians decided to organize a bear hunt for Mr. Bayer to sweeten the talks. This wasn't a simple task. Some people in the west still believe that bears may be found and seen everywhere in Russian cities just like squirrels may be seen in our back yards. This is not true. The closest place one may find bears in the wild is maybe 2,500 miles away from Moscow. However, a solution was quickly found. The Russian businessmen went to Moscow Circus(马戏团)and for $2,000 bought a very old bear. This bear used to amuse and amaze audiences in many countries for 30 years, but got and looked too old, and was retired.“Be careful, the Russian bears are very dangerous, and frightening,” they told to Mr. Bayer. “If compared to the Russian bears, your African lions are nothing more than harmless cats.” The bear was brought to a forest 50 miles from Moscow and was left there. Mr. Bayer was told that bears were plentiful in that forest and that many cattle and even people had been eaten in the surrounding villages.Meanwhile, an 18-year old female drove through the forest on a motorcycle and suddenly saw a bear (no bears had been seen in those places for 200 years). She was frightened, fell, left her helmet and her motorcycle and ran away.Mr. Bayer was excited and ready to hunt. This could become the most successful part of his extraordinary hunting experience. The next moment Mr. Bayer saw a bear in a helmet driving on a motorcycle through the forest in front of him. The bear had a happy expression on his face, as he was doing something he had been doing in the circus for 30 years: circling on a motorcycle!Mr. Bayer lives in a private mental institution near Hamburg happily ever after. The equipment was never sold to Russia. It was sold to Iraq instead.21. Why did the Russians invite Mr. Bayer to hunt bears?A. Russian bears are famous for their cruelty.B. They managed to find a bear for hunting.C. They expected the trade to be successful.D. There was a bear in Moscow Circus.22. Why did the Russians say “Be carefu l, the Russian bears are very dangerous, and frightening”?A. To tell Mr. Bayer that many people had been killed by bears.B. To make Mr. Bayer feel the hunting really challenging.C. To warn Mr. Bayer to mind his safety while hunting.D. To tell Mr. Bayer that the bear is really dangerous.23. We can infer from the last paragraph that __________.A. Mr. Bayer has gone madB. the bear injured him badlyC. he has worked in a mental institution since thenD. the trade has gone smoothly between Russian and IraqBMy son has poliomyelitis (小二麻痹症) and he suffered from it a lot. When he was young, my wife and I took him to see so many doctors and got different kind oftreatments. But still, he couldn’t walk like a normal kid.So he was laughed at by his classmates for his walking style and he was very sad. Then he became afraid of going to school. He wouldn’t go anymore. One night, my wife had a breakdown and shouted at him, “I tell you, my kid, you might be like this forever. You are a freak in other’s eyes, and perhaps it would never change. But in my eyes, in your dad’s eyes, you are not a freak! You are not! Even if you are, we love you and will love you forever!” My son spoke nothing for two days. He didn’t eat or sleep. We could read he was hurt. We hoped something[ wonderful would fall in our family. On the third morning, he struggled to walk to my car, with his school bag in his hand of course. He raised his head high and hugged me, saying “I want to go to school. Nothing will beat me.”You know, from then on, he was never afraid of being laughed at any longer. If he couldn’t avoid these looks, he chose to look at them i n the eyes. Later, something nice really happened and my son went to Harvard University. When he was asked how he managed to bear the p ressure, he said, “Because of my parents.”My dear fellows, if you care too much about how other people look at you or what their opinions are, you will never become what you want to be.29. The boy owed his success to his parents and was grateful to them32. From the passage we can say that the boy is _________________.A. confident and outgoingB. brave and hard-workingC. wise and easy-goingD. determined and braveCWith the development of science and technology, new inventions, especially new electronic products, have made people’s lives easy and convenient. But as the saying puts: A coin has two sides. One day, I was walking in the park with a friend and his cell phone rang, interrupting our conversation. There we were, walking and talking on a beautiful sunny day and…I became invisible, absent from the conversation. The telephone used to connect you to the absent. Now it makes people sitting next to you feel absent. Why is it that the more connected we get, the more disconnected I feel? Every advance in communications technology is a tragedy to the closeness of human interaction. With email and instant messaging over the Internet, we can now communicate without seeing or talking to one another. With voice mail, you can conduct entire conversations without ever reaching anyone. If my mom has a question, I just leave the answer on her machine. As almost every contact we can imagine between human beings gets automated, the alienation(疏远) index goes up. You can't even call a person to get the phone number of another person any more. Directory assistance is almost always fully automated.Pumping petrol at the station? Why say good morning to the attendant when you can swipe(刷)your credit card at the pump and save yourself the bother of human contact?Making a deposit at the bank? Why talk to a teller who might live in the neighborhood when you can just insert your card into ATM?Pretty soon you won’t have the burden of making eye contact at the grocery shop. Some supermarket chains are using a self-scanner so you can check yourself out, avoiding those check-out people who look at you and ask how you are doing.I am not against modern technology. I own a cell phone, an ATM card, a voice mailsystem, and an email account. Giving them up isn't wise…they're a great help to us. It's some of their possible consequences that make me feel uneasy.More and more, I find myself hiding behind e-mail to do a job meant for conversation. Or being relieved that voice mail picked up a call because I didn't really have time to talk. The communications industry devoted to helping me keep in touch is making me lonelier. So I've put myself on technology restriction: no instant messaging, with people who live near me,no cell phoning in the presence of friends, no letting the voice mail pick up when I'm at home.32. Which of the following would be the best title of the passage?A. The Advance of Communications TechnologyB. The Consequences of Modern TechnologyC. The Process of Communications RevolutionD. The Automation of Modern Communications33. Paragraphs 5 to 7 are listed as examples, which show that the use of modern communications is ___________.A. encouragingB. disappointingC. satisfyingD. embarrassing34. The passage implies that _______________.A. modern technology is bridging the peopleB. modern technology is separating the peopleC. modern technology is developing too rapidlyD. modern technology is interrupting our lives35. What does the writer think to do with the modern technology?A. We may use them no matter what others are doing.B. We can throw them away and return to the ancient.C. We can be far away from them forever.D. We can use them less and communicate with the people around us.DI was 16 when my father finally decided he would send me to wilderness camp for several months. He had threatened to do it many times before, but my mother had alwaysmanaged to prevent him from doing so. This time he insisted on doing it.The latest incident was the last straw. Impulsively(冲动地), I had pushed Mr. Ford, my math teacher, down a flight of steps at school. He broke his arm in two places. Anyway, he had agreed not to accuse me as a favor to my dad, who was in the middle of a tight race for sheriff(执法官) in our town. But my reckless behavior had my dad’s closest advisor talking.“John, he’s your son and he’s a kid, but he is dragging you down,” I heard Jake Hutch tell my dad through his closed office door the night after I pushed Mr. Ford. “If you can’t make your son o bey the rules, how can you make the law obeyed in this town?”So, off to Pisgah National Forest I went. I imagined hours of untold abuse at the hands of some strong sergeants(军士). I was determined no to be broken. I was who I was.Nearly every day for six months, a small group of other troubled teens and I carried our 30-pound backpacks on a difficult journey covering about 10 miles. We hiked in a rough wilderness that seemed untouched by civilization. Our sergeants were firm but kind, not frightening as I had imagined. We learned how to make a fire without matches and create a shelter with branches and grass. We learned which plants were safe to eat out in the wild. I felt myself change. I was calm and often reflective. My old, impulsive self was gone. One morning, six months later, my dad came to pick me up. I ran to hug him and saw relief and love in his eyes.“So what’s it like being sheriff?” I asked on the ride home.“I lost the race, Danny,” he said.“I’m sorry, Dad.” I knew my behavior probably had a lot to do with the defeat.Dad squeezed my shoulder and brought me close. “As long as I don’t ever lose you, I’m okay.”24. We are taught at home and at school that using violence is the least civilized (文明的) way to solve problems. For example, last week I thought about hitting my friend for winning a beautiful shell while we were playing at the beach.I talked with him instead and we came to anagreement. If two adults had a disagreement, and if they used violence towards each other in order to win, is it all right? When two countries disagree, they often fight a war. Why is using violence not okay at home, at school, or in your country but okay between countries? So many people have been killed because of wars, not only soldiers butordinary people, even small children and babies. And refugees (难民) exist, too.A war is a great violence, like two people fighting over a shell, just much bigger. Adults say they are fighting wars in order to solve problems and make peace. But can you really “make peace” by killing so many people?I don’tthink bombs (炸弹) can reach people’s hearts and change them. Bombs can’tcreate love and caring, and that’s what we need in the world. Why do adults use violence so quickly? Why can’t they use their wisdom and talk it over?Adults might say that things are not that easy. But they are the ones that teach us to be kind, not to hurt people, and not to kill. W hy don’t they act as what they say?---A page from a 12-tear-old boy, Joshua’s diary.36. It was to be performed on a twenty-one week old fetus (胎儿)in uterus(子宫)at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. At that time, in 1999, twenty-one weeks in uterus was the earliest that the surgical team would consider for surgery. The worst possible outcome would be that the surgery would cause premature delivery, and no child born earlier than twenty-three weeks had survived. The tension could be felt in the operating room as the surgery began.A typical C-section cut was made to access the uterus, which was then lifted out and laid at the junction of the mother’s thighs(大腿). The entire procedure would take place within the uterus, and no part of the child was to breach the surgical opening. During the procedure, the position of the fetus was adjusted by gently moving the outside of the uterus. The entire surgical procedure on the child was completed in one hour and thirteen minutes. When it was over, the surgical team breathed a sigh of relief, as did I.As a doctor asked me what speed of film I was using, out of the corner of my eye I saw the uterus shake, but no one’s hands were near it. It was shaking from within. Suddenly, an entire arm thrust out of the opening, then pulled back until just a little hand was showing. The doctor reached over and lifted the hand, which reacted and squeezed the doctor’s finger. As if testing for strength, the doctor shook the tiny fist. Samuel held firm. I took the picture! Wow! It happened so fast that the nurse standing next to me asked, “What happened?” “The child reached out,” I said. “Oh. They do that all the time,” she responded. The surgical opening to the uterus was closed and the uterus was then put back into the mother and the C-section opening was closed. It was ten days before I knew if the picture was even in focus(对焦). To ensure no digital manipulation(篡改) of images before they see them, USA Today requires that film be submitted unprocessed. When the photo editor finally phoned me he said, “It’s the most incredible picture I’ve ever seen.”【小题1】What may be the best title for the passage?A. An Amazing MomentB. A Pitiful FetusC. An Honorable Job as a PhotographerD. Well, they’re certainly not using the t ime for a moment of quiet thinking.Nor are they reading a book.New technology has replaced quiet habits.Today the only acceptable form of book on the London underground is an e-book.Apple must earn a fortune from London commuters(使用月票上下班者).Since the launch of the iPhone in 2020, over 40,000―yes, that’s 40,000 “apps” have been designed.Commuters love them because they are the perfect time-fillers.One “app”, called iShoot, is a game that features tanks.Another one, Tube Exits, tells passengers where to sit on the train to be closest to the exit of their destination.iSteam clouds the iPhone screen when you breathe into the microphone. You can then write in the “steam” on your phone screen. For those without an iPhone, another Apple product, the iPod, may be the distraction(消遣)of choice. It’s not just teenagers who “plug in” to their music-iPods are a popular way to pass the time for all ages. And if games, e-books and music aren’t enough to keep you occupied, then perhaps you would prefer a film? The development of palm DVD technology means many commuters watch their favorite TV shows or films on the way to work. With all these distractions, it’s amazing that people still remember to get off the train.CI was sitting in the room reading when I heard a loud noise. To defend my home from break-in, I picked up my defense weapon--- a broom and went out. There on the roof of my porch(门廊), I saw a grey fluffy squirrel. I drove her away with the broom, but the next day I heard her again.I searched squirrels on the net and found because their teeth keep growing, they have to constantly chew on things to shorten their teeth. This was disturbing so I asked my husband to call in some wildlife control people. On Monday morning two men showed up, with guns in their hands. I pointed uneasily to the hole in my porch roof. They held up their guns. Suddenly I saw in my mind the baby nursery inside. I stopped them and confirmed that they wouldn’t harm her. They hesitated, but finally put down their g uns. Then they brought out a bottle of deodorizer(除臭剂)and sprayed it into the squirrel’s home. They told me she would not like the smell and would leave. There was no sign of Mrs. Squirrel, so they blocked the hole, took my cheque for $250 and left. Shortly after they left, Mrs. Squirrel returned from her shopping trip. She was mad at being driven out and began feverishly clawing at the porch roof. In order to stop the destruction of my home, I drove her away with the broom again. Each day thereafter, Mrs. Squirrel continued her attack on my possession. I then called the company to report that “SHE’S BAAAAAACK…” The receptionist said that if Mrs. Squirrel had managed to find another way into my porch roof, it would be a new charge. I replied I couldn’t c ontinue contributing my husband’s hard-earned income to their silly wildlife experts and hang up.I went to the porch and banged on the roof. Mrs. Squirrel came outand glared at me. We negotiated some terms, came to an agreeable arrangement and went back into our respective homes. All is quiet these days, although large quantities of materials have been removed from my garage wall and my daughter claims that some of her doll-house furniture has disappeared. I still hope that Mrs. Squirrel would leave, but I will wait until it is warmer and hopefully until after the birth of the little ones.【小题1】What did the author think of the squirrel at first? A.She worried about the safety of the squirrel.B.She thought the company charged too much.C.She decided to drive away the squirrel herself.D.She doubted the ability of the wildlife control people.【小题3】What can we learn from the passage?A.Getting rid of the squirrel needs patience.B.The squirrel has destroyed the author’s house.C.The author has developed affection for the squirrel.D.The author singed an agreement with Mrs. Squirrel.。

MoreoverAEver since they were first put on the market in the early 1990s, genetically modified ( 转基因) foods have been increasingly developed and marketed in many countries in the world, mainly on the basis of their promise to end the worldwide food crisis. But can GM technology solve world hunger problems? Even if it would, is it the best solution?Despite what it promises, GM technology actually has not increased the production potential of any crop. In fact, studies show that the most widely grown GM crop, GM soybeans, has suffered reduced productivity. For instance, a report that analyzed nearly two decades of research on major GM food crops shows that GM engineering has failed to significantly increase US crop production.Something else, however, has been on the rise. While GM seeds are expensive, GM companies tell farmers that they will make good profits by saving money on pesticides (杀虫剂). On the contrary, US government data show that GM crops in the US have produced an overall increase in pesticide use compared to traditional crops. "The promise was that you could use less chemicals and boost production. But neither is true." said Bill Christison, Presidentof the US National Farm Coalition. At the same time, the authors of the book World Hunger: Twelve Myths argue that there actually is more than enough food in the world and that the hunger crisis is not caused by production, but by problems in food distribution(分配) and politics. These indeed deserve our efforts and money. Meanwhile, the rise in food prices results from the increased use of crops for fuel rather than food, according to a 2008 World Bank report. As a matter of fact, scientists see better ways to feed the world. Another World Bank report concluded that GM crops havelittle to offer to the challenges of worldwide poverty and hunger, because better ways out are available, among which "green" farming is supposed to be the first choice.36.The author develops the second paragraph mainly ________.A. by classificationB. by comparisonC. by examplesD. by supposition (37.What does the underlined word "boost" in the third paragraph probably mean?A. Control.B. EvaluateC. Obtain.D. Increase.38.GM companies promise farmers that they will benefit from________.A. practicing "green" farmingB. use of less chemicalsC. fair distribution of their cropsD. using more crops for fuel39.Which of the following best describes the attitude of the author towards GM technology?A. Optimistic.B. Defensive.C. Disapproving.D. Pessimistic.BThroughout the history of the arts, the nature of creativity has remained constant to artists. No matter what objects they select, artists are to bring forth new forces and forms that cause change-to find poetry where no one has ever seen or experienced it before.Landscape(风景) is another unchanging element of art. It can be found from ancient times through the 17th-century Dutch painters to the 19th-century romanticists and impressionists. In the 1970s Alfred Leslie, one of the new American realists, continued this practice. Leslie sought out the same place where Thomas Cole, a romanticist, had produced paintings of the same scene a century and a half before. Unlike Cole who insists on a feeling of loneliness and the idea of finding peace in nature, Leslie paints what he actually sees. In his paintings, there is no particular change in emotion, and he includes ordinary things like the highway in thebackground. He also takes advantage of the latest developments of color photography(摄影术) to help both the eye and the memory when he improves his painting back in his workroom.Besides, all art begs the age-old question: What is real? Each generation of artists has shown their understanding of reality in one form or another. The impressionists saw reality in brief emotional effects, the realists in everyday subjects and in forest scenes, and the Cro-Magnon cave people in their naturalistic drawings of the animals in the ancient forests. To sum up, understanding reality is a necessary struggle for artists of all periods.Over thousands of years the function of the arts has remained relatively constant. Past or present, Eastern or Western, the arts are a basic part of our immediate experience. Many and different are the faces of art, and together they express the basic need and hope of human beings.40. The underlined word “poetry” most probably means __________.A. an object for artistic creationB. a collection of poemsC. an unusual qualityD. a natural scene41. Leslie's paintings are extraordinary because .A. they are close in style to works in ancient timesB. they look like works by 19th-century paintersC. they draw attention to common things in lifeD. they depend heavily on color photography42. What is the author's opinion of artistic reality?A. It will not be found in future works of art.B. It does not have a long-lasting standard.C. It is expressed in a fixed artistic form.D. It is lacking in modern works of art.43. What does the author suggest about the arts in the last paragraph?A. They express people's curiosity about the past.B. They make people interested in everyday experience.C. They are considered important for variety in form.D. They are regarded as a mirror of the human situation.CMini Book Excerpts(节选)BiographyWhen Salinger learned that a car park was to be built on the land, the middle-aged writer was shocked and quickly bought the neighboring area to protect it… The townspeople never forgot the rescue and came to help their most famous neighbor.J. Others had cokes and candy for lunch, while we had to eat a sandwich. As you can guess, my supper was different from the other kids'. But at least I was not alone in my suffering. My sister and two brothers had the same mean mother as I did.My mother insisted on knowing where we were at all times. She had to know who our friends were and what we were doing. We had to wear clean clothes every day. Other kids always wore their clothes for days. We reached the height of disgrace because she made our clothes herself, just to save money. The worst is yet to come. We had to be in bed by 9:00 each night and up at 7:45 the next morning. So while my friends slept, my mother actually had the courage to break Child Labor Law. She made us work. I believed she lay awake all night thinking up mean things to do to us. Through the years, our friends' report cards had beautiful colors on them, black for passing, red for failing. My mother, however, would merely be content with black marks. None of us was allowed the measure of being a dropout. She forced us to grow up into educated and honest adults. Using this as a background, I'm now trying to bring up my three children. I'm filled with pride when my children think I am mean because nowI thank God every day for giving me the meanest mother in the world. 48.From the passage we can learn that the writer's mother was______.A.not generous at allB.very strict with her childrenC.very mean with money mattersD.very cruel to her children49.Which of the following things did the writer hate to do most?A.Eating differently from other kids.B.Wearing clean clothes made by mother.C.Going to bed early and getting up early.D.Letting mother know where they were.50.It can be inferred from the passage that ______.A.the writer worked hard and got good grades in studiesB.mother was punished for breaking the Labor LawC.all the other kids studied better than the writerD.the writer's family lived a miserable lifeA major source of teen stress is school exams, and test anxiety is not uncommon. This warming will likely benefit some sea species at the expense of others.A study in the May 20 issue of the journal Nature confirmed that there has been a warming trend in the world’s oceans since 1993, as the waters have absorbed much of the extra energy in the planet’s atmosphere. The warming that has already occurred, and is expected to continue in the coming decades, will likely spell bad news for many ocean species, such as corals and species that live in the cold waters of the planet’s poles. But some creatures beneath the ocean surface might actually have an advantage in the newly wanned waters.A 2008 study, for example, said that a warming of just a few degrees Fahrenheit in Antarctic waters could make them suitable to sharks, which haven’t lived in the area for about 40 million years. It’s easier for sharks to keep their high metabolism in warmer waters. If sharks do move into the area, they could cause damage to the existing ecosystems of the oceans around Antarctica.A study of starfish found these typical ocean creatures grew faster in water at warmer temperatures and higher carbon dioxide levels ( another result of all the extra greenhouse gas in the atmosphere) thanat normal conditions—which is bad news for the shellfishes they live on.Work by Jeremy Jackson, a professor at Scripps Institution of Oceanography at the University of California at San Diego, suggests that ocean warming—along with other threats such as overfishing and habitat destruction—could change once complex ocean ecosystems into ones that favor simpler species, such as microbes, toxic algal blooms and jellyfishes.1.How is Paragraph 3 developed?A.By giving examples.B.By analyzing causes.C.By making comparisons.D.By making classifications.2.What can we know about sharks from the fourth paragraph?A.They are native to Antarctic waters.B.They do harm to the whole ecosystem.C.They’re adaptable to warmer water conditions.D.They threaten simpler species in Antarctic waters.3.What will ocean warming likely bring about?A.Promoting the growth of starfish.B.An ecosystem of smaller creatures.C.Different food sources for sea creatures.D.Damaging living places of deep-sea species.4.What is the purpose of the passage?A.To explain why ocean warming benefit some species.B.To introduce how creatures survive in warmer oceans.C.To clarify some misunderstandings about ocean warming.D.To show which creatures will benefit from warmer oceans.7、 The Intelligent Transport team at Newcastle University have turned an electric car into a mobile labor atory named “DriveLAB” in order to understand the challenges faced by older drivers and to discover where the key stress points are.Research shows that giving up driving is one of the key reasons for a fall in health and well-being among older people, leading to them becoming more isolated(隔绝) and inactive.Led by Professor Phil Blythe, the Newcastle team are developing in-vehicle technologies for older drivers which they hope could help them to continue driving into later life. These include custom-made navigation(导航) tools, night vision systems and intelligent speed adaptations. Phil Blythe explains: “For many older people, particularly those living alone or in the country, driving is important for preserving their independence, giving them the freedom to get out and about without having to rely on others.”"But we all have to accept that as we get older our reactions slow down and this often results in people avoiding any potentially challenging driving conditions and losing confidence in their driving skills. The result is that people stop driving before they really need to."Dr Amy Guo, the leading researcher on the older driver study, explains, "The Drive LAB is helping us to understand what the key points and difficulties are for older drivers and how we might use technology to address these problems."For example, most of us would expect older drivers always go slower than everyone else but surprisingly, we found that in 30mph zones they struggled to keep at a constant speed and so were more likely to break the speed limit and be at risk of getting fined. We’re looking at the benefits of systems which control their speed as a way of preventing that."We hope that our work will help with technological solutions(解决方案) to ensure that older drivers stay safer behind the wheel.”1.What is the purpose of the Drive LAB?A.To explore new means of transport.B.To design new types of cars.C.To find out older driver's problems.D.To teach people traffic rules.2.Why is driving important for older people according to Phil Blythe?A.It keeps them independent.B.It helps them save time.C.It builds up their strength.D.It cures their mental illnesses.3.What do researchers hope to do for older drivers?A.Improve their driving skills.B.Develop driver-assist technologles.C.Provide tips on repairing their cars.anize regular physical checkups.4.What is the best title for the text?A.A new Model Electric CarB.A Solution to Traffic ProblemsC.Driving Services for EldersD.Keeping Older Drivers on the Road8、 When I was in fourth grade, I worked part-time as a paperboy. Mrs. Stanley was one of my customers. She’d watch me coming down her street, and by the time I’d biked up to her doorstep, there’d be a cold drink waiting. I’d sit and drink while she talked. Mrs. Stanley talked mostly about her dead husband, “Mr. Stanley and I went shopping this morning,” she’d say. The first time she said that, soda went up my nose.I told my father how Mrs. Stanley talked as if Mr. Stanley were still alive. Dad said she was probably lonely, and that I ought to sit and listen and nod my head and smile, and maybe she’d work it out of her system. So that’s what I did, and it turned out Dad was right. After a while she seemed content to leave her husband over at the cemetery (墓地).I finally quit delivering newspapers and didn’t see Mrs. Stanley for several years. Then we crossed paths at a church fund-raiser. She was spooning mashed potatoes and looking happy. Four years b efore, she’d had to offer her paperboy a drink to have someone to talk with. Now she had friends. Her husband was gone, but life went on.I live in the city now, and my paperboy is a lady named Edna with three kids. She asks me how I’m doing. When I don’t say “fine,” she sticks around to hear my problems. She’s lived in the city most of her life, but she knows about community. Community isn’t so much a place as it is a state of mind. You find it whenever people ask how you’re doing because they care, an d not because they’re getting paid to do so. 高二英语寒假作业(八)
高二英语寒假作业(八)第一部分阅读理解(共两节,满分40分)第一节 (共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)阅读下列列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。
并在答题卡上将该选项涂黑.AOne reaction to all the concern about tropical deforestation(砍伐森林) is a blank stare that asks the question, "Since I don't live there, what does it have to do with me?"The answer is that your way of life, wherever you live in the world, is tied to the tropics in many ways. If you live in a house, wash your hair, eat fruits and vegetables, drink soda, or drive a car, you can be certain that you are affected by the loss of tropical forests.Take rubber(橡胶) for example. For many uses, only natural rubber from trees will do. Synthetics are not good enough. Today over half the world's commercial(商业的)rubber is produced in Malaysia and Indonesia, while the Amazon's rubber industry produces much of the world's four million tons. And rubber is an important material in making gloves, balloons, footwear and many sporting goods. Thousands of other tropical plants are valuable for their industrial use. Many scientists strongly believe that deforestation contributes to the greenhouse effect—or heating of the earth from increased carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. As we destroy forests, we lose their ability to change carbon dioxide into oxygen.Carbon dioxide levels could double within the next half-century, warming the earth by as much as 4.5 degrees. The result? A partial melt-down of polar ice caps, raising sea levels as much as 24 feet; even 15 feet could threaten anyone living within 35 miles of the coast. Unbelievable? Maybe. But scientists warn that by the time we realize the severe effects of tropical deforestation, it will be 20 years too late. Can tropical deforestation affect our everyday lives? Now, you should have got the answer.1. The underlined word "synthetics" probably means a kind of __________.A. natural rubberB. tropical grassC. man-made materialD. tropical tree2. In the last paragraph the author tries to _________.A. tell people how to avoid the tropical deforestationB. show us how important it is to protect the tropical forestsC. persuade people to buy something syntheticD. let people realize the good effect of tropical deforestation3. The author's attitude towards the tropical deforestation is __________.A. puzzlingB. coldC. supportingD. opposedBAs a boy, Charles Robert Darwin collected anything that caught his interest: insects, coins and interesting stones. He was not very clever, but Darwin was good at doing the things that interested him.His father was a doctor, so Darwin was sent to Edinburgh to study medicine, and was planned to follow a medical career. But Charles found the lectures boring. Then his father sent him to Cambridge University to study to be a priest. While at Cambridge, Darwin’s interest in zoology and geography grew. Later he got a letter from Robert FitzRoy who was planning to make a voyage around the world on a ship, the Beagle. He wanted a naturalist to join the ship, and Darwin was recommended(推荐). That voyage was the start of Darwin’s great life.As the Beagle sailed around the world, Darwin began to wonder how life had developed on earth. He began to observe everything. After he was home, he set to work, getting his collection in order. His first great work The Zoology of the Beagle was well received, but he was slow to make public his ideas on the origin of life.Later Darwin and Wallace, another naturalist who had the same opinions as Darwin, produced a paper together. Darwin’s great book, On the Origin of Species by Meansof Natural Selection (《物种起源》) appeared. It attracted a storm. People thought that Darwin was saying they were descended from monkeys. What a shameful idea! Although most scientists agreed that Darwin was right, the Church was still so strong that Darwin never received any honors for his work.Afterwards, he published another great work, The Descent of Man. His health grew worse, but he still worked. “When I have to give up observation, I shall die,” he said. He was still working on 17, April, 1882. He was dead two days later.1. Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?A. Charles Darwin’s ideasB. Charles Darwin’s worksC. Father of modern biology: Charles DarwinD. The greatest scientist: Charles Darwin2. Darwin’s father sent him to Edinburgh to _____.A. make him like natural historyB. make him become a doctorC. let him change his hobbiesD. have him give up his collection3. 2020-2021年高二英语寒假作业第八天
2019-2020年高二英语寒假作业第八天一.美文晨读One of my fondest memories as a child is going by the river and sitting idly on the bank. There I would enjoy the peace and quiet, watch the water rush downstream, and listen to the chirps of birds and the rustling of leaves in the trees. I would also watch the bamboo trees bend under pressure from the wind and watch them return gracefully to their upright or original position after the wind had died down. When I think about the bamboo tree’s ability to bounce back or r eturn to its original position, the word resilience es to mind. When used in reference to a person, this word means the ability to readily recover from shock, depression or any other situation that stretches the limits of a person’s emotions.Have you ever felt like you are about to snap? Have you ever felt like you are at your breaking point? Thankfully, you have survived the experience to live to talk about it.During the experience you probably felt a mix of emotions that threatened your health. You felt emotionally drained, mentally exhausted and you most likely endured unpleasant physical symptoms.Life is a mixture of good times and bad times, happy moments and unhappymoments. The next time you are experiencing one of those bad times or unhappy moments that take you close to your breaking point, bend but don’t break. Try your best not to let the situation get the best of you.A measure of hope will take you through the unpleasant ordeal. With hope for a better tomorrow or a better situation, things may not be as bad as they seem to be. The unpleasant ordeal may be easier to deal with if the end result is worth having. If the going gets tough and you are at your breaking point, show resilience. Like the bamboo tree, bend, but don’t break.二.词汇训练1. His mother works in the school library. She is a l_______.2. I really appreciate your kindness. Here is what the experts suggest:1 . Nancy Alguire, a teacher in Clifton Park, N. Y., was once painfully shy and had a hard time laughing. Then she married a circus clown. “I became interested in the clowns,” she recalls “One day I put on a costume and paint my face. That afternoon my whole life changed. I learned to laugh and enjoy life in a way I had never done before.”2 To this day, she still makes it a rule to be with people who enjoy life and laughing.3 It doesn’t take you too much time and can be easy. Collect favorite cartoons and jokes. Also, keep a paper for writing down humor you find in everyday life. “Good ideas e and go fast, you have to capture them quickly or they are gone,” says Virginia Tooper.Laugh when you need it most. “ 4 ” says edian Bill Cosby. “And once you find laughter, no matter how painful your situation might by, you can survive it,” he insists.Gray Alan, a sociology professor at the University of Minnesota, claims that laughter is a skill we can all gain –because it es naturally. 5 . To create means “to bring into being, to cause, to exist something each of us does daily”.We are creative whenever we look at or think about something in a new way.First, this includes an awareness of our surroundings. It means using all of our senses to bee aware of our world. This may be as simple as being aware of color and texture(质地), as well as taste, when we plan a meal. Above all, it is the ability to notice things that others might miss.A second part of creativity is an ability to see relationships among things. If we believe the expression,“There is nothing new under the sun”, the creativity is remaking or rebining(重组) the old in new ways. For example, we might do this by finding a more effective way to study or a better way to arrange our furniture, or we might make a new bination of camera lenses and filters to create an unusual photograph.A third part of creativity is the courage and drive to make use of our new ideas, to ask for them to achieve some new results. To think up a new idea is one thing;to put the idea to work is another. These three parts of creativity are included in all the great works of geniuses, but they are also included in many of our daytoday activities. 1.Which of the following activities is NOT a creative one according to the passage?A.To prepare for a meal. B.To arrange the furniture in a special way.C.To buy some books from a bookstore. D.To “write” a letter with the puter.2.“There is nothing new under the sun” really implies that ________.A.a new thing can only be created at the basis of earliest thingsB.a new thing is only a taleC.we can seldom create new thingsD.we can hardly see really new things in the world3.What does the author think about the relationship between a new thought and its being put into practice?A.It’s more difficult to create a new thought than to use it in practice.B. To find a new thought will clearly lead to the production of a new thing.C.A man with an excellent ability of practice can easily bee an inventor.D. One may e up with a new thought, but can not put it into practice. 4.The best title for this passage is ________ .A.How to Develop One’s Creativity B.What Is CreativityC.The Importance of Creativity D.Creativity,a Not Faraway ThingBRelations between Frenchspeaking Québécois and the Englishspeaking majority in Canada have been the main ethnic issue of the past 40 years. Supportfor sep aratist parties increased mainly because of the failure of Canada’s other provinces to deal with Québec’s demand to be recognized as a “distinct society(特殊社会)”, with powers to preserve its culture and language from further Anglicization(英语化). Québec’s stil l controversial (有争议的)1977 language law made French the province’s official language.Twothirds of Canada’s population live in the 5% of its land area taking up the Great Lakes—St. Lawrence lowlands. However, Canada’s ethnic mix has changed a lot since the 1970s, due to a move from a restrictive immigration policy to one which weles those with money or skills. Significant numbers of Asians have moved to Canada. The government promotes a policy which encourages each group to maintain its own culture, creati ng a “mosaic” or a “munity of munities”.The largest element of the indigenous population is the one million people of native Amerindian descent, known in Canada as First Nations. There are also 300,000 Métis (FrenchAmerindians) and an Inuit population of some 56,000 in the north. In 1992 the Inuit successfully settled their longstanding land claim, and in 1999 the Nunavut area, with only 27,000 mainly Inuit inhabitants, gained the status of a territory, the first part of Canada to be governed by native Canadians in modern history. A Supreme Court land rights ruling in 1997,establishing the principle of “aboriginal title”, opened the way for the returnof ancestral lands claimed by native Amerindian nations, and in 1998 the federal government formally apologized for their past mistreatment.5. This passage is mainly about ________ .A.Canada’s original population B.Canada’s policy on ethnic affairs C.Canada’s main peoples and ethnic issues D.Canada’s immigration policy6. The underlined word “indigenous” i n the third paragraph probably means________ .A.original B.special C.great D.foreign7. We can infer from the passage that ________ .A.the federal government’s language law made French the province’s official languageB.there was not any ethnic issue in Canada in the past 40 yearsC.other provinces succeeded in dealing with Québec’s demand to be recognized as a “distinct society”D.over half of Canada’s population live in the Great Lakes—St. Lawrence lowlands8. A.Amerindians are the only native population of Canada.B.Québec want to keep their culture and language.C.The federal government didn’t apologize for their past mistreatment. Most of its population live in the Great Lakes—St. Lawrence lowlands. B.Some provinces want to be recognized as “distinct societies”.C.Its policy that weles immigrants with money or skills.D.Its strict restrictive immigration policy.五.书面表达出身于贫困家庭、带着妹妹上大学的洪战辉的确把中国感动了。

Why did the Russians say “Be careful, the Russian bears are very dangerous, and frightening”?A. When he was asked how he managed to bear the pressure, he said, “Because of my parents.”My dear fellows, if you care too much about how other people look at you or what their opinions are, you will never become what you want to be.29. After hearing what the mother said, the son ______________.A. quarreled with his mother and left home angrilyB. went to school unwillingly with speaking anythingC. burst out crying complaining about his bad experienceD. didn’t say anything without eating or sleeping for two days31. The boy owed his success to his parents and was grateful to them32. From the passage we can say that the boy is _________________.A. confident and outgoingB. brave and hard-workingC. wise and easy-goingD. determined and braveCWith the development of science and technology, new inventions, especially new ele ctronic products, have made people’s lives easy and convenient. Ford. “If you can’t make your son obey the rules, how can you make the law obeyed in this town?”So, off to Pisgah National Forest I went. I ran to hug him and saw relief and love in his eyes.“So what’s it like being sheriff?” I asked on the ride home.“I lost the race, Danny,” he said.“I’m sorry, Dad.” I knew m y behavior probably had a lot to do with the defeat.Dad squeezed my shoulder and brought me close. “As long as I don’t ever lose you, I’m okay.”24. Travelling with their baby daughter, they flew on to Cairns in Australia which was then struck by one of the most tremendous tonadoes in the nation's history. From there, the couple, in their 20s, were forced to shelter for 24 hours on the cement floor of a shopping centre with 2,500 others. "Trees were being knocked over and big branches were scattered across the streets," Mr Svanstrom told Sweden's Express newspaper. "We escaped by the skin of our teeth," said Svanstrom. They then headed south to Brisbane but the city was experiencing massive flooding, so they crossed the country to Perth where they narrowly escaped raging bush fires. The couple then flew to Christchurch, New Zealand, arriving just after a massive magnitude 6.3 earthquake destroyed the city on February 22. Mrs. Svanstrom said, "When we got there the whole town was a war zone." "We could not visit the city since it was completely blocked off, so instead we travelled around before going to Japan." But days after the Svanstroms arrived, Tokyo was rocked by Japan's largest earthquake since records began. "The trembling was horrible and we saw roof tiles fly off the buildings," Mr. Svantrom said. "It was like the buildings were swaying back and forth."The family returned to Stockholm on March 29,2011 after a much calmer visit to their last destination China. But Mr. Svanstrom, who also survived the destructive Boxing Day tsunami that hit southeast Asia in 2004, said the marriage was still going strong. He added, "I know marriages have to endure some trials, but I think we have been through most of them." "We've certainly experienced more than our fair share of catastrophes, but the most important thing is that we're together and happy." Mrs. Svantrom added: “ To say we were unlucky with theweather doesn’t really cover it! 高二英语外研版选择性必修第二册寒假作业 (8)Unit 2 Improving yourself
(8)Unit 2 Improving yourself——高二英语外研版寒假作业一、阅读理解1. I must have looked deep in thought, or as deep in thought as an 11-year-old man can, when my grandmother glanced up from her weeding to ask, "You have something on your mind, don't you?""Yes, I was thinking that someday I want to be an Olympic speed skating champion like my hero, Eric Heiden. I want to be a doctor like my parents and I want to help children in Africa. "I immediately knew I had the right person when a knowing smile flashed across her face. "Johann, of course! You can do anything you want to do!" she said simply. And with my grandmother's support, I set out to pursue my passions.14 years later, I was well ready to take hold of my first dream: becoming an Olympic champion. The Olympics in 1994 were in my home country, Norway. As I entered the Olympic stadium, I wasn't the best athlete, and many had doubts about my ability to perform well. But I had something special working for me. I had a woman in the first row who believed in me following my passions just as much as I did. For the first time ever, my grandmother was going to see me skate. It happened. Breaking a world record, I won the gold.As I stood on the podium(领奖台) that I had dreamedabout my entire life, a curious question popped into my head. Why me? Why did I win, given all the other incredible competitors out there? The reason had to be more than a grandmother who shared a belief in her grandson's dream. The question led me to only one answer: because I wanted to make a difference in the world, and with all the media attention on my success, I could.I immediately knew what that difference had to be: hope in the lives of the children in Africa. Six months earlier, I'd been invited to Eritrea as an ambassador for Olympic Aid.2. There are many changes that can happen in a person's life. Some changes are very small and would not affect your life very much. However, other events could be very important and could change a person's whole life. The important event that changed my life is coming to the United States to study. When I first arrived in this country, I realized that a great transformation(转变) would happen in my life both physically and mentally. After spending more than two months in the United States, I firmly believe that moving to the United States is a beneficial change for me. This change provides me with a chance to lead a healthy lifestyle as well as a new way of thinking that is important for me.It is necessary to have this change as it offers me a healthy lifestyle. Before coming to the United States, I used to stay up late at night to study and wake up early in the morning. This could cause me to get sick easily. When I decided to come to America, I made up my mind and determined to keep a healthy routine. For example, I enjoy the American-style meal which includes having a fresh salad instead of cooked vegetables. This method of cooking vegetables helps me absorb more vitamins from them.Additionally, this most important change enables me to think differently and internationally. This is my first time living in a North American country. Hence, I have a brand-new chance to experience a new culture. By knowing more about different cultures, I have become more considerate and have an understanding of various habits as well as behaviors from different races.Since I came here, I have changed my eating and sleeping habits to a good way. Thus, this change is very important and beneficial for me.1.What does the author mainly want to tell us in the passage?A.There exist great changes during a person's life.B.Small changes will bring great influence on society.C.An important event has changed the life of the author.D.The author values the chance to study in the United States.2.How did the author feel when he first landed onto the new country?A.He benefited from the challenging life.B.He found he would face a great change.C.He discovered life here quite agreed with him.D.He knew he had to change his healthy lifestyle.3.What can we learn from the third paragraph?A.The author was becoming healthier and healthier.B.The author felt happier and more content.C.The author learned how to cook American meals.D.The author decided to live as the Americans do.4.Which of the following impresses the author most?A.The American-style meal.B.A new way of living.C.Experiencing a new culture.D.Changing his behaviors.3.New Jersey Middle School Makes Students Go Phone-FreeA middle school in Union County, New Jersey, is forcing its students to stay disconnected in class, by prohibiting cellphones. Principal Kevin Stansbury of Maxson Middle School put forward the phone ban last week after he noticed some major issues in the school. "Our test scores were down, and discipline was up," he said. According to him, students were too focused on their phones to pay attention to their lessons. So, he purchased Yondr pouches for the school. When students come into the class each morning, they place their phones in the pouch, which is then locked tightly. So they have no access to phones at all. It can only be opened using a special device at the end of the day. The ban on mobile devices applies not just during class time but during breaks, with the only exceptions being in times of emergency or in cases of students who need such devices to help with disabilities.Eighth graders who spoke with News 12 New Jersey say that they noticed a change in a matter of hours. "It's just better for everyone because you'll understand how it feels to get more work done instead of distracting attention because of the phone," says student Charlene V. "I was usually listening to music, but today I get to communicate with all my friends," says student Desiree Duncan. The program was originally met with resistance from students and parents, so the process was not that smooth. But teachers and administrators say that the program will have a major impact. "Students were talking and laughing and there were no cellphones other than being carried in the pouches," Stansbury says.Teacher Nia Cummings says she even noticed students bouncing ideas off each other in class. They then headed south to Brisbane but the city was experien cing massive flooding, so they crossed the country to Perth where they narrowly escaped raging bush fires.
