Part II Reading Comprehension (40%)Directions: Read the following passages carefully and do the multiple-choice questions.Text 1On a practical level, teachers need a wide variety of skills and abilities. They have to be ready to spend many hours at home planning their lessons and preparing homework. They have to be well organized in class, patient with students, able to appear bright and interested even if they are in fact tired or unhappy, and lively enough to control a group of young people for almost 200 days a year. Outside the classroom, they may have to prepare teaching materials, to choose books to use as texts, to help organize the work of other teachers, or to organize spare time activities for students. If you think that you have all the necessary qualities, you may feel that you would like to be a teacher. One way to decide, if you live in the United States, is by joining a club for future teachers, such as Student Action for Education. Clubs like this give advice about your field, and also allow you to watch teachers at work, attend meetings and experiment with teaching methods and equipment. You could also talk with the job advisor at your school or university. Finally, you could try teaching a younger student or becoming an advisor at a summer camp for children. In the United States and Europe, there are special shops that sell clothing and food for cats and dogs.In many countries of the world, there is special food for pets. The answers lie in the way Americans live today. During the first few decades of the twentieth century, canned and convenience foods freed the family cook from full-time duty at the kitchen range. Then, in the 1940s, work in the wartime plants took more women out of the home than ever before, setting the pattern of the working wife and mother.Today about half of the country’s married women are employed outside the home. But, unless family members pitch in with food preparation, women are not fully liberated from that chore. Instead many have become, in a sense, prisoners of the completely cooked convenience meal. It is easier to pick up a bucket of fried chicken on the way from work or t take family out for pizzas, or burgers than to start opening cans or heating up frozen dinners after a long, hard day. Also, the rising divorce rate means that there are more single working parents with children to feed. And many young adults and elderly people, as well as unmarried and divorced mature people, live alone rather than as part of a family unit and don’t want to bother cooking for one.Fast food is appealing because it is fast, it doesn’t require any dressing up, it offers a “fun”break.11. American women left home to work in large numbers because of_________.A) the improved living standardB) the increase in food priceC) the need of wartime industryD) the modernization of the kitchen12. The phrase “pitch in” in Paragraph 2 is closest in meaning to_________.A) “offer help and support”B) “eat with good appetite”C) “offer compliment”D) “disagree with”13. What is a working mother’s best choice if she does not have time to prepare dinner for thefamily according to the passage?A) Making a meal out of canned food.B) Buying some chicken on the way home and frying it.C) Taking the family to dinner at a pizza place.D) Heating up frozen dinners.14. Which of the following groups of Americans are most likely to cook their meal at home?A) Single working mothers.B) unmarried mature people.C) elderly people living alone.D) Unemployed women with family.15. What is this passage mainly about?A) Women’s liberation in America.B) Changes in the American family during Word War II.C) Reasons for the popularity of fast food in America.D) Rising divorce rate in America today.Passage 4There are different ideas about pets in different parts of the world. 工商导论(英译汉)

工商导论(英译汉)

一:Debt or Equity Financing?Debt or equity financing?this is a question many firms have to answer during their financial planning . Debt financing means obligations to pay loan lenders or bond buyers a fixed amount of interest regardless of the firm’s financial conditions .if the firm fails to pay, it may lose its assets and even go bankrupt. So the safest strategy would be to avoid any debt . For most firms, however ,using equity as the only source of funds is either inadequate for its operations or too expensive. Therefore,an optimized mix of debt and equity financing should be found to meet the firm’s long-term financial needs and maximize shareholders’weath.Such a mix, also called capital structure ,varies form industry to industry and form firm to firm . For industries and firms which have predictable cash flows (e.g. utilities companies),the portion of debt-financing can be higher than those with different cash flow patterns.二:Marketing MixTo carry out the above functions, the marketers must develop a comprehensive plan or strategy covering the following major areas,i.e.,product ,price, promotion and place , usually summarized as “the 4 p’s” of marketing.Below is an overview of the 4p’s; detailed discussions will be given in the following chapters.1.product A product starts with consumer needs and must be different from rivalcommodities to stand competition;in other words,it must have special appeal for consumers in aspects like quality, utility or image.2.Price Most people ,rich or poor, are sensitive to price . in order to attract customers andbeat competition, firms try their best to lower the price. But too low a price will leave them with no profit and may violate laws . So firms should take costs, rivals’ prices and pricing regulations all into account when pricing their products.3.Promotion Promotion means making a product and its benefits known and stimulatingconsumer demand for it. Among the most often used promotional tools are advertising,packaging,salesbrochures,personalselling,etc.4.Place Firmsmust, through cost-effective channels of distribution and timelytransportation, make their goods services available where and when they are wanted.三:Who sets the Price?“of course the seller sets the price,”many consumers would answer with no hesitation . But in reality , many forces interact in price setting .First of all ,in a market economy, buyers play a greater role in price setting than most people believe. If the sellers are given the liberty of setting prices at their will , they will certainly charge the highest price possible , but that will scare away most ,if not all,of the buyers. As a result ,the sellers will have to cut the price to the point that it is high enough for them to make a profit butlow enough to attract a sufficient number of buyers . So,by buying or not buying a product the buyers can exercise great influence in the price setting process.Secondly, supply and demand also interact in price setting in a market economy. When the supply of a product exceeds the demand for it , the price will go down , and vice versa. According to the economic theory of supply and demand , price is set where supply meets demand ,and this price is referred to as the equilibrium price.四:First, commercial banks are required to store some of their funds (a reserve) either in their own vault or as deposit with their local Federal Reserve Banks. In order to control the money supply , the Fed can adjust reserve requirements for commercial banks. Higher reserve requirements for commercial banks . Higher reserve requirements mean that banks have less money to lend ,and reduce the expansion of money . Lower requirements , conversely, will result in an increased supply of money. The Fed also acts as the commercial bankers’bank . When commercial banks need money, they can borrow from the Federal Reserve Banks and pay interest on theloans . The rate of interest charged by the Fed is called discount rate. If the Fed wants to reduce the money supply , it increases the discount rate, making borrowing more expensive and bank loan-making less attractive. Low discount rates , on the other hand ,encourage borrowing and lending , resulting in expansion of the money supply. Changes in the discount rate cause more subtle shifts in the Fed uses this tool frequently . In the 1980s, for instance ,the Fed adjusted the the discount rates considerably. The third instrument the Fed can use to control the money supply is its open-market operations .When it wants to increase the money supply , the Fed buys securities from dealers. The dealers’ banks are credited for the transactions, so the banks have more money to lend and this expands the money supply .to decrease the supply of money , the Fed sells securities.Open-market operations are the most effective tools of control because they act quickly and predictably .五:Bonds provide very steady income and have the least risk .Therefore, they are more appealing to those with fixed income (e.g. the retired). Also attractive to income-minded investors are dividend-yielding stocks such as preferred stock and common stocks which regularly pay dividends . For investors who are still young and can wait for the long term mon stocks with good growth potential are of particular interest .In reality , many investors own bonds , dividend-yielding stocks ,blue chips as well as speculative issues . For example , they may invest most of their money in blue chips for long term growth , some in bonds or dividend-yielding stocks for regular income . and a small portion in speculative issues for quick money .。

Passage OneInternet voting happens all the time, but usually it's confined to topics such as "Who is the cutest cast member of Party of Five?" Soon, however, people will be able to cast their ballots for President on the Internet. In March, Arizona Democrats will vote online in their state's presidentialand Florida and Washington are considering online voting. The military plans to allow a small test group of overseas soldiers to vote via the Internet this November. The Internet voting is growing rapidly. There are civic(市民的)engagement enthusiasts whosee it as a way to prevent the drop in voter turnout. Then there are the Internet fans, who think the Internet is going to change everything, so why not politics? Most important are the people who make the plan for developing software for online voting. Imagine the retail price of that software, then multiply it by every state and city government, and suddenly a lot of Internet capitalists develop a deeply felt concern for increasing voter turnout. Some problems will arise. Hackers and some Politicians could break into a voting database and make the secret ballot not so secret. A massive computer failure would have disastrous consequences. Just as serious, online voting could distort participation levels, at least, to the wealthy and cyber- connected. In the long run, however, online voting might make little difference. Since the 1960s, the government has made numerous attempts to energize nonvoters by making it easier for them to get to the polls, extending voting hours, lowering the voting age, etc. Still, voter turnout has decreased steadily. Political scientists believe the important cause is indifference and dislike to politics, not the inconvenience of voting. Putting a ballot on the Internet might even further depress turnout by cheapening one of the holy ceremonies of democracy. "The business of democracy," says Curtis Gans, an analyst of voting behaviour, "shouldn't be the same as getting your e-mail."56. The word "ballot" (Line 2, Para. 1) most probably means_·A) vote B) ball C) dance D) voter57. Internet voting is growing rapidly because of all of the following EXCEPT that_.A) civic engagement enthusiasts regard it as a way to prevent the drop in voter turnoutB) Internet fans think the Internet is going to change everything including politicsC) some people make the plan for developing software for online votingD) some capitalists are very much concerned about the voter turnout58. Which of the following is NOT a problem that will arise in Internet voting?A) People will gain unauthorized access to a database.B) Online voting system may be distorted.C) Participants will be mainly wealthy and cyber-connected people.D) Computer failure.59. According to political scientists, the important cause for decreased voter turnout is—·A) the lack of interest in politicsB) the inconvenience of votingC) the lack of regulationsD) the limited voting hours60. What does Curtis Gans think of the Internet voting?A)1t is not serious to vote by means of the Internet.B) Internet voting is a natural behavior just like sending an e-mail.C) Government should make the polls easier for voters to get to.D) Fewer and fewer people are interested in Internet voting.Passage TwoOne greater benefit of the Web is that it allows us to move information online that now resides in paper form. Electronic commerce is increasing steadily. It is difficult to measure, because a lot of electronic commerce involves existing buyers and sellers who are simply moving paper-based transactions to the Web. That is not new business. Microsoft, for example, purchases millions of dollars of PCs online instead of by paper. However, that is not a fundamental change; it has just improved the efficiency of an existing process. The biggest impact has occurred where electronic commerce matches buyers and sellers who would not previously have found each other. That is a new type of commerce.Today, about half of all PCs are still not connected to the Web. Getting communications costs down and making all the software simpler willbring in those people. And that, in turn, will move. us closer to the critical mass that will make the Web lifestyle everyone's lifestyle. The boundary between a television set and a PC will be blurred (使模糊) because even the set-top box (机顶盒) that you connect up to your cable or satellite will have a processor more powerful than what we have today in the most expensive PC. This will, in effect, make your television a computer.Interaction with the Web also will improve, making it much easier for people to be involved. Today the keywords we use to search the Web often display too many articles to sort through, many of them out of context. If you want to learn about the fastest computer chip available, you might end up getting responses instead about potato chips being delivered in fast trucks. If you ask about the speed of chips, the result will be about computers, not potatoesTo predict that it will take over ten years for these changes to happen is probably pessimistic. We usually overestimate what we can do in two years and underestimate what we can do in ten. The Web will be as much a way of life as the car by 2008 or even earlier.61. Electronic commerce becomes a new type of commerce whenA) paper-based trading is moved on to the WebB) the efficiency of the existing process is improved by the InternetC) a Web site offers more goods than a storeD) new buyers and sellers find each other on the Internet62. One of the reasons why half of PCs are not connected to the Web is that_A) the software is not user-friendlyB) people have no interest in the WebC) the Web information is not reliableD) people are too busy to get connected to the Web63. The use of computer will be much more widespread when_.A) the boundary between the computer and the TV disappearsB) electronic commerce brings about a fundamental changeC) computer and communication become simpler and cheaperD) governments begin to move administration online64. The example of potato chips in the passage is used to illustrate_.A) the Web's ineffective interactionB) the Web's too much informationC) the Web's lack of speedD) the Web's inaccurate response65. In this passage the author is trying to show that_.A) everyone will be able to use computer and the Web by 2008B) computers will be able to recognize speech in 10-year timeC) the use of the Web will become more common and easier in the futureD) interaction with the Web will become easier to manage56-60. 工商管理英语考试题期末说课材料

Any activity in which you are dealing with children will help you decide whether you have a calling for teaching.1. In most cultures, animals are in a worse position than human beings. In some cases, however, people treat their pets like members of their families, or perhaps better. In the United States and Europe, there are special shops that sell clothing and food for cats and dogs.In many countries of the world, there is special food for pets. The main idea of this reading passage is: _______.A) Dogs enjoy fine restaurantsB) A rich cat can afford to go to any restaurantC) People treat pets in very different ways in different parts of the worldD) It is stupid to have special food and clothing for animalsPassage 3What makes Americans spend nearly half their food dollars on meals away from home? 湖南工商大学英语期末考试

湖南工商大学英语期末考试Part IIReading Comprehension (30 %)Directions: There are four passages in this part. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A), B), C) and D). You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheetwith a single line through the center.Passage OneScience is not a set of unquestionable results but a way of understanding the world around us. Its real work is slow. The scientific method , as many of us learned in school, is a gradual process that begins with a purpose or problem or question to be answered. It includes a list of materials, a procedure to follow, a set of observations to make and, finally, conclusions to reach. In medicine, when a new drug is proposed that might cure or control a disease, it is first tested on a large random group of people, and their reactions are then compared with those of another randomgroup not given the drug. All reactions in both groups are carefully recorded and compared, and the drug is evaluated. All of this takes time and patience. It’s the result of course, that makes the best news—not the years of quiet work that characterize the bulk of scientific inquiry. After an experiment is concluded or an observation is made, the result continues to be examined critically. When it is submitted for publication, it goes to a group of the scientist’s colleagues, who review the work. Einstein was right when he said: “No amount of experimentation can ever prove me right, a single experiment can at any time prove me wrong.”In August 1996, NASA announced the discovery in Antarctica of a meteorite(流星)from Mars that might contain evidence of ancient life on another world. As President Clinton said that day, the possibility that life existed on Mars billions of years ago was potentially one of the great discoveries of our time. After the excitement wore down and initial papers were published, other researchers began looking at samples from the same meteorite. Some concluded that the “evidence of life”wasmostly contamination from Antarctic ice or that there was nothing organic at all in the rock. Was this a failure of science, as some news reports trumpeted? No! It was a good example of the scientific method working the way it is supposed to. Scientists spend years on research, announce their findings, and these findings are examined by other scientists. That’s how we learn. Like climbing a mountain, we struggle up three feet and fall back two. It’s a process filled with disappointments and reverses, but somehow we keep moving ahead.21. The author’s main purpose in writing this passage is to state that ____________.A) most scientific discoveries are not reliableB) mass media is misleading because it looks at the research results onlyC) scientific research is a process filled with reverses and requires slow and patient workD) repeated experiments are necessary before medicine can be used in patients22. Publication of a scientific finding signifies __________.A) a challenge to fellow scientists to prove it wrongB) the end of a processC) the beginning of a new scientific inquiryD) the soundness of the result23. Einstein’s words are used to show that he thought___________.A) experiments have proved him rightB) scientists do not need so many experimentsC) one experiment is not enough to prove him wrong.D) scientific ideas are never free from challenge24. NASA’s announcement of the discovery of evidence of ancient life on Mars shows _________.A) the way human beings learn about natureB) the failure of the scientific methodC) the fruitlessness of human search for life on another worldD) the excitement brought by scientific findings25. It can be inferred from the passage that the media is interested in __________.A) the process of scientific researchB) the results of scientific researchC) the scientists who do the researchD) the effects of scientific research on human lifePassage TwoNormally a student must attend a certain number of courses in order to graduate, and each course which he attends gives him a credit which he may count towards a degree. In many American universities the total work for a degree consists of thirty-six courses each lasting for one semester. A typical course consists of three classes per week for fifteen weeks; while attending a university a student will probably attend four or five courses during each semester. Normally a student would expect to take four years attending two semesters each year. It is possible to spread the period of work for the degree over a longer period. It is also possible for a student to move between one university and another during his degree course, though this is not in fact done as a regular practice.。
