The Analects
▪ Benevolence embodies the ethical system of Confucius. “The benevolent love others.” Benevolence is in fact the moral codes regarding self-cultivation and interpersonal relationship. It, in the eyes of Confucius, is the noblest character and moral state embracing and commanding all virtues. Benevolence, in the book of Analects by Confucius, includes modesty, leniency, faithfulness, resourcefulness, kindness, bravery, wisdom, and honesty with slowness of speech, loyalty, tolerance, studiousness, etc.
The Doctrine of the Mean
▪ The Doctrine of the Mean is another essay in The Book of Rites. It is about the Confucian philosophy of life. According to the Confucian scholars of the Song Dynasty, while The Great Learning is a gateway to perfect virtue, The Doctrine of the Mean teaches the ways of the world. The Mean, a typical Confucian concept, is composed of two Chinese characters. Zhong means neither too many nor too few, neither too much nor too little; and yong means neither outstanding nor common.

Gutishi and Jintishi
• Tang poetry can be divided into the original gutishi (古体诗old stylistic poetry) and jintishi (近体诗new stylistic poetry). The latter is a stricter form developed in the early Tang Dynasty with rules governing the structure of a poem. The greatest writers of gushi and jintishi are often held to be Li Bai and Du Fu respectively.

Chinese Literature (II)
Unit 5
Tang Poetry
• Tang poetry refers to poetry written in or about China's Tang dynasty, (618 - 907, including the 690-705 reign of Wu Zetian) and/or follows a certain style, often considered as the Golden Age of Chinese poetry. According to a compilation, the Quantangshi there were almost 50,000 Tang poems written by over 2,200 authors. During the Tang Dynasty, poetry continued to be an important part of social life at all levels of society. Scholars were required to master poetry for the civil service examinations, but the art was theoretically available to everyone. This led to a large record of poetry and poets, a partial record of which survives today. Two of the most famous poets of the period were Du Fu and Li Bai.
