Book Report of “Emma”Jane Austen is one of my favoritenovelists.Herwork, "Prideand Prejudice" I have read a lot oftimes, Ireallylike this book and every roles in this novel, so dose “Emma”.Think aboutJane Austen, a woman who never married all around her life, full of mystery. Sheis a famous Britishfemalenovelist, her workfocused onthe squireofmarriage andfamilylifeof womeninfemale-specificnuancedobservation andlively wittexttruepicture of theworld aroundherlittle world. Her fatherservedinthe localrectoryfor forty years, full of knowledge. And her mother came fromrelativelywealthy families, also has certain culturalaccomplishment. Although Austin did not enter formal school, but she is in good condition and reading environment of the family, gave her self-conditions, she cultivated her interest in writing. She began to write something at the age of thirteen, just a girl of thirteen-year-old enough to show her talent in terms of language. And it is no wonder how she can write out great works like these.Throughout her life, there is not too much works, but famous enough. "Pride and Prejudice" is Jane Austen's masterpiece. And "Emma" is one of the most influential 19th-century classicalnovels, I read it for several times andit impressed me deeply too many times. The two movies also have beenadapted intomovies and TV show many times“Emma”, wrote by Jane Austen,is a comic novel about the perils of misconstrued romance. The novel was first published in December 1815.As in her other novels,Austen explores the concerns and difficulties of genteel women living in Georgian-Regency England; she also creates a lively comedy of manners' among her characters.Let’s tell about the story. Heroine Emmaisthe richest man inHighburyMr.Woodhouse's youngest daughter, well-educatedfrom childhoodgoverness, MissTaylor. With her father's big love andcarefreelivingenvironment, soshedeveloped apretentiouscharacter. So Emma Woodhouse, a beautiful, intelligentand wealthygirl, aged 20, but alsoanout-and-outfantast.She is interested in all the romanticthings side of her life, but stubbornlythinkingshe wouldneverget into it. She wasgiven a free handtoorphansHarriet Smith, her friend, a pretty young girl but nothing in mind, she was a bastard, work after graduating at the nearby boarding school retention, Emma charge to protect her and directher lovelife again and again. WhenHarriet Smithmistakenly thought that shefell in love withlocal officialsMr.George Knightley, Emmajust only to findthat it is herself who fell inlove with Mr.George Knightley. Althoughit is contrary to her vow that she would not marry with anybody lifelong, but fall in love, she must break her innocent vow. Miss Taylorgave birth to adaughter,Emmabegan to dream ofmakingfamily life. Aftera series of setbacks, Knightley and Emma finally spit mutual Passions; Robert Martin Knightley's help, finally got Harriet love. So at the end of the story, her and her friend both got their happiness. The most classical sentences in “Emma” is “That is the case with us all, papa. One half of the world cannot understand the pleasures of the other.”May be everyone who has read this book would remember the sentence deeply, But a famous dialogue in “Emma”which touched me deeply is the dialogue between Emma and her best friend Harriet. ”’That you are not yet married, you are so charming.’‘I assure you, I have very little intention of marrying at all.’‘It is so very odd to hear a woman talk like that.’‘I have fortune,I am occupied, and without love, why would I want to change my situation? But, ah, do not worry, Harriet, for I shall be a rich old maid. And it is only poor old maids who invite the world’”. From it, it tells to every girl that you should not to worry about marrying with someone, you should try your best to do yourself, make yourself a better life, and also give us an answer why some girl do not have married at the suitable age. It teaches me a correct sense of love, love maybe is an important part in life, but is not everything in your life, the most important is you, read more books, do exercise, go for a walk, out to see the world, keep a kind-hearted, keep optimistic, be happy, be strong, and you will find ,the world will be better, and nothing can beat you, and you can get whatever you dream if you try your hard.Maybe the book's influence between readers not as great as "Pride and Prejudice", but it Generating a moving force, it’s about the true marriage.

Reflections on EmmaEmma is a typical novel of Jane Austen which published in 1815—no fierce conflicts, but attractive narration, detailed description and vivid characters, which are her masterly writing skills and features of her novels. Although there is only flat narration, it involves little things unconsciously which arrests the readers. In conclusion, Emma reflects the times which Jane Austen lived. In the 19th century England, complex and confusion social hierarchy and the interaction between the various social classes are prevailing. Emma persuades her friend Harriet to marry Robert Martin ,a peasant in that she thinks that Martin is in a lower class than Harriet. That’s the reason why she encourages Harriet to love Mr. Elton, a clergyman in possession of wealth. Generally, literature is a mirror of the society. Emma’s behavior can be explained by her status. Jane Austen slightly satirized the society she lived in through this work. In addition to social hierarchy, she also disproved self-righteousness and self-assertion.In the next parts, I will focus on characters analysis according to my own perception.Emma Wood house, a clever, wealthy and charming young lady, but spoiled by her father and her nanny Miss Taylor, is the heroine of the novel. In my opinion, she is warm-hearted and addicts to match-makingfor her friend, Harriet. Although she believes that she is always right on every issue, she listens to Mr. Knightley’s advice. Emma is so different from women at that time, she provided people at that time an idea that it is not only a man could choose life, but a woman could choose her happiness, too. However, Emma is a little imaginative, to some degree, she is self-righteous. Sh e disagrees Harriet’s marriage with Martin, regardless of how deeply they love each other . She introduces Mr. Elton to Harriet so that Harriet can have a decent life. But Mr. Elton shows interest in Emma ,more accurately, Emma’s large wealth, instead of p oor Harriet whose identity remains secret. That also causes Harriet loves in pain and in vain. It seems that Emma helps Harriet to find an appropriate husband who has the ability to give Harriet a wonderful life, but what she has done just make the simple matter more complicated. Moreover, Jane Austen put her irony cautiously in the relationship between Emma and Frank Churchill. In other words, both of them take advantage of each other. When other people find that Frank Churchill admires Emma, Emma still keeps her promise of not marrying, so she refuses falling in love with Frank Churchill inwardly.Jane Austen satirizes those people who think themselves are intelligent that they are able to control others at their will, on the contrary, they can’t benefit f rom what they already done.George Knightley, in the description of the author, is a truly gentleman who is well-educated, genteel and righteous. He treats Martin as his friend, ignoring their social class . He is the only person who opposes Emma’s absurd match-making, and he always provides reasonable suggestion to Emma. Thus, one notices that his love for Emma is not blind. Maybe Jane Austen expresses her attitude about love through Mr. Knightley, that is, love includes mutual progress. Comparing with Mr. Darcy, the protagonist in Pride and Prejudice, Mr. Knightley respects the lower class while Mr. Darcy looks down on people who inferior to him. Therefore, Mr. Knightley seems to be a perfect character, in which conveys Jane Austen’s hope of the English so ciety: a no absurd self-approbation and self-assertion higher social class.Harriet, she really appreciates Emma’s friendship because she thinks that Emma’s high social status is inappropriate with her lower class. Because of such appreciation, Harriet dar es not to refuse Emma’s concern for her marriage and never opposes Emma’s improper match-making. That’s the irony of social hierarchy. In the novel, Harriet is a young girl without her own thoughts. She obey s to Emma’s arrangement to refuse Martin’s proposal but to consider Mr. Elton as a future husband, even if she loves Marin thoroughly. Jane Austen herself never married, but she criticized hesitation and illusion in love, like Harriet who depends on others to decide for them. Similar with Pride and Prejudice, Jane Austen showsthat true love never changes and people usually get hurt in love until they understand and cherish true love. This story also tell us another truth. After making a lot of mistakes, Emma abandoned imagination, and become more and more mature. And we should not be arrogant(傲慢).If we make a mistake, we should correct it on time.Every work is the author’s observation and reflection of the society, Emma is no exception. It’s the combination of Jane Austen’s efforts and achievement. It’s the traditional and typical Austen-style for its special, delicate description from the perspective of a female author. To some extent, Emma is not only a miniature of the English society in which Jane Austen lived, but also the treasure in literature because it contains realism.。

Thank you!AbstractEmma may not be the most popular one of all Jane Austen’s novels, but undoubtedly it’s the most mature one in style and the most complete one in structure. In this novel, the author’s understandings of reality, reflections of life and the use of writing techniques are more profound and skilled than the earlier ones. Emma fully reflects Jane Austen’s ability to master language and shape the characters, and the skills of literary exploration. Her true and accurate portrayal of human nature, keen observation of British Regency society, as well as superb mastery of the art techniques still make us gasp in admiration.Jane Austen has successfully created a series of female characters, who have their own characteristics, and each one in the novel occupies a different location and has a different role. Emma, the heroine, is the most prominent character, and is also the representative one among all of Austen’s characters. Emma describes how the heroine walks one error out to moral perfection and the process of emotional maturation. The main research point of this thesis is the analysis of Emma’s view of values and the social causes. This thesis is divided into four parts. The first part is the synopsis for the novel and the brief introduction of Emma’s characteristics. The second part describes Emma's various values such as wealth, friendship and love, and uses concrete examples to demonstrate them. The formation of such values must have various causes, so in the third part of this thesis three social causes are analyzed, and I also combine these causes with the economic background at that time.Lastly, this thesis briefly narrates the reference significance of Emma to the development of modern women. What’s more, I also put forward my general ideas and thoughts on feminism and the growth of modern women.

Naturally, her parents are searching for a wealthy, well-appointed husband to assure their daughter's future social standing. They are eyeing Mr. Wisely, nephew to the very formidable, not to mention very rich, local aristocrat Lady Gresham, as a prospective match. But when Jane meets the roguish and decidedly non-aristocratic Tom Lefroy, sparks soon fly along with the sharp repartee. His intellect and arrogance raise her ire - then knock her head over heels. Now, the couple, whose flirtation flies in the face of the sense and sensibility of the age, is faced with a terrible dilemma. If they attempt to marry, they will risk everything that matters - family, friends and fortune.

Emma

Emma—A Novel More than MatchmakingEmma was completed in 1815 by Jane Austen, who first gave the novel its modern character through the treatment of everyday life. The copy I read was published by Foreign Language Teaching and Research Press in Beijing, 2006. For those who are woefully bored with heavy ornate words, those who are filled with nausea at the pungent sarcasm or those who take keen interest in feminine writing styles or matchmaking, those who want to have a peep at the English country life in the 19th century, the novel Emma is qualified to serve as the best choice. In the novel, the vivid depiction of contemporary English country life and repetitious matchmaking attempts, the fully embodiment of exquisite observation, subtle irony, comic tone and flashing wit enable Emma to become one of Jane Austen’s most brilliant work s and the expression of an artist at the height of her powers, which is destined to instill some fresh air into the literature. Moreover, such writing skills endow Miss Emma with tremendous charm and shape Emma to become a name with a large following, although Austen herself described Emma as "a heroine whom no one but myself will much like."From the view of setting, the novel is rooted in middle-class provincial life of England in the 19th century. Minor landed gentry, country clergymen and their families resurface in the book with easy-to-understand language that seems phonographic. There is no denying that the setting of the novel is closely related to the author’s personal experience. Austen was active in social life and enjoys social events. Moreover, she was well connected with the middling-rich landed gentry which set the tone for the common life she portrayed in the novel with her exquisite observation. The character is well shaped in the novel. With a wide range view of the work, the whole book is mainly concerned with a country lady living in Regency England that is Miss. Emma Woodhouse and the book even be named after her. Different from other five heroines in Austen’s wor ks whose chances for making a good marriage depend greatly on financial issues, "Emma Woodhouse, handsome, clever, and rich, with a comfortable home and happy disposition seemed to unite some of the best blessings of existence; and had lived nearly twenty-one years in the world with very little to distress or vex her.", what’s more, “Emma, who is spoiled by being the cleverest of her family, has been mistress of the house. In her mother she lost the only person able to cope with her.”There is no doubt that such living conditions are destined to provide hotbed for Emma to contract privilege and overconfidence. Just as Alix Wilber mentioned, “Of all Jane Austen's heroines, Emma Woodhouse is the most flawed, the most infuriating, and, in the end, the most endearing.” Her charms maybe no where but just exist in such imperfection, which leads to series of comedies in matchmaking attempt but cannot cover her shining kindness to the vulnerable groups. From the standpoint of content, the whole story centers on the theme of matchmaking. Fueled by her feeling of superiority, Emma fancies herself a master-matchmaker and is engaged in plotting and planning marriage for her friend Harriet Smith again and again. What’s worse, d riven by the power of overconfidence,Emma mistakes her fancy as the truth unwaveringly and stubbornly turns a deaf ear to the exhortation and warning of Mr. Knigntley. Naturally, every match-making is proved to be a wretched business and spirals out of control. There is no exaggeration to say in the matchmaking it is the overconfidence or rather the fancy that plays the leading role from the very beginning. The curtain rises as Emma’s rich fancy on Harriet Smith’s birth, and there’s no doubt that it serves as an appropriate example. Putting aside th e fact that “whoever might be her parents,” Emma fancies the natural daughter Harriet Smith as “no doubt a gentleman’s daughter” and persuades her that “she must support her claim to that station by everything within her power”, what’s more, “Emma couldn’t feel a doubt of having given Harriet’s fancy a proper direction” and “she was quite convinced of Mr.Elton’s being in the fairest way of falling in love with Harriet”. As a result, all these pave way for her series of ridiculous match-making. In the following scenes, Emma’s overconfidence is weaved in whole story. The most typical and ridiculous scene in this case is Emma’s misunderstanding of the charade from Elton. “I cannot make a question, or listen to a question about that. It is a certainty. Receive it on my judgment” and she arranges that “Leave it to me. You do nothing” to add certainty to her overconfidence. The influence of overconfidence is proved to be disastrous. Under the power of overconfidence, Emma sticks her gun and puffs Harriet up with such ideas of her own beauty and of what she has a claim to, but the result is that her overconfidence brings nothing but the severe pang and humiliation on Harriet’s heart and the deep regrets rooted in Emma’s own mind that “had she never brought Harriet fo rward! Had she left her where she ought, and where he had told her she ought!”According to the novel, the overconfidence of Emma is strong enough to draw her to fall into mistake. In this case, overconfidence is not different from the hotbed for prejudice. It occurs to me another masterpiece of Jane Austen that is Price and Prejudice. Elizabeth, the heroine, is pretty confident and proud of her ability of perception; but it is also her such “merits” that lead to her misjudge on Darcy and mistakenly view Darcy’s confidence as conceit. It certainly plays a negative role in their love and lays numerous obstacles in their way along with her overconfidence. No matter Emma or Elizabeth, they all lost their way in overconfidence, which causes unnecessary troubles on intimate friend or on herself. However, as for the theme of the novel, it maybe far from only criticizing the flaw related to the character that is the overconfidence. Matchmaking is not only the simple matchmaking, what is also extended from it is the deep reflection of social hierarchies and the interaction between various social classes attached to the 19th century. No matter Ms .Knightley who can keep reasonable from A to Z or Miss. Emma Woodhouse who is the representative of fancy, they both pay stress on the rigid class loyalties. In the novel, Ms .Knightley mentions that “he (Robert Martin) is not her (Harriet Smith) equal indeed, for he is as much her superior in sense as in situation.”“The advantage of the match I felt to be all on her si de, and I had not the smallest doubt that there would be a general cry out upon her extreme good luck”, andthe match is no doubt “a bad connection for him”. At the same time although Emma tries her best to make a good match for her imitate friend, yet all these are only based on her fancy that Harriet is “no doubt a gentleman’s daughter”. In this case, the novel adequately serves as the reflection to the principle at that time that is “ let beggars match with beggars ”to a dd dimension and depth to the story.Emma is written in a comic tone, which greatly contributes to its popularity. The whole book is immersed in the humorous tone which can be embodied by the wording. For example, as to describing the improvement of Emma’s emotion after a whole night, Austen narrates it as “To youth and natural cheerfulness like Emma’s, though under temporary gloom at night, the return of day will hardly fail to bring return of spirits. The youth and cheerfulness of morning are in happy analogy, and of powerful operation; and if the distress be not poignant enough to keep the eyes unclose, they will be sure to open sensations of softened pain and brighter hope” ,which tickles the reader’s funny bones and arouse their interest with certainty.Related to the comic tone, the mild irony and sparkling wit are prevalent within the pages of Emma. The resolute decline from Mr. Eton that “What can be the meaning of this? Miss. Smith! I never thought of Miss. Smith in the whole course of my existence” and Miss. Smith’s affecti on to Mr. Eton by cherishing a small piece of court-plaster or the end of an old pencil he had thrown away for long. All these are no doubt laced with irony.Emma is regarded as one of Jane Austen’s finest achievements. As I read it , it seems that such evaluation is pretty accurate. Behind the farce of matchmaking, the author presents us the fossil of the ordinary country life of England in the 19th century with her peculiar delicate perspectives along with her light irony and sparkling wit soaked in the comic tone. Furthermore, the underlying reflection between the lines no doubt adds great significant to the novel to make it on the list of enlightening masterpieces.。

About The language of This Book The novel is narrated using free indirect discourse, which means that narrator steps into and out of Emma’s thoughts, sometimes using language we would imagine Emma to use without placing it in quotation marks.
SETTING Austen is known for her gently satirical portraits of village life and of the rituals of courtship and marriage, but she wrote during the Romantic period, when most major writers were concerned with a very different set of interests and values.
Frank Churchill:
he epitomizes attractiveness in speech, manner, and appearance.
He goes out of his way to please everyone, and while the more perceptive characters question his seriousness, everyone except Knightley is charmed enough to be willing to indulge him.
Romantic poets confronted the hopes and failures of the French Revolution and formulated new literary values centered on individual freedom, passion, and intensity. When literature was associated with wit, poise, and propriety.
