He was holding down two jobs at the time — one with the city’s public works department, the other as a barber. Saturday was his busiest hair-cutting day, but he chose to donate his time and give free haircuts to unfortunate kids so they’d look neat on that first day of classes. But then he had a light bulb moment: “The kids should earn their free haircut by having to read a book to me,” Holmes said. The idea was so popular that he continued it the first Tuesday of every month for the next two years. Boys from five to ten years old would grab a favorite book, settle into the barber chair, and read aloud while Holmes was doing their hair. If they were puzzled over a word, Holmes was there to help. After the haircut, they’d review he book, from the characters and vocabulary to the themes — just like in school, only more fun. Holmes, who is married and has two sons, ages three and four, recognizes that not every parent has the time to read with their kids.Holmes admits he, too, benefits from the process. “There was this seven-year-old who struggled through his book, stuttering over words even though he didn’t have a stutter (口吃),” said Holmes. He had the boy take the book home and practice. When the child came back a few days later, “He read it with no problems. That inspires me.”Holmes and his family have recently moved to a Chicago suburb. When they get settled, he plans to take up his role as the Story-book Barber. “The way the world is today with guns and violence,” he says, “it’s a safe heaven for the kids, to come to the barbershop and read books.”4.What do we know about Holmes two years ago?A.He had only one job.B.He earned a lot as a barber.C.He offered free haircuts to the poor kids.D.He was the organizer of Back to School Bash.5.The example in Paragrap3 mainly proves that _______.A.Holmes is very strict with the kidsB.Holmes also learns a lot from the kidsC.being a fluent reader needs plenty of practiceD.many kids have trouble in reading a storybook6.What can we learn from the last Paragraph?A.Holmes is dissatisfied with the world today.B.Holmes’ barbershop will have some changes.C.Holmes’ barbershop has won great popularity.D.Holmes will continue to be a storybook barber.7.What is the best title for the text?A.The Storybook BarberB.Back to School BashC.Reading Counts A LotD.Care About the KidsAny schoolchild knows that a whale breathes through its blowhole. Fewer know that a blowhole is a nostril (鼻孔) slightly changed by evolution into a form more useful for a mammal that spends its life at sea. And only a dedicated expert would know that while toothed whales, such as sperm whales, have one hole, baleen (鲸须) whales, such as humpback and Rice whales, have two.Even among the baleen whales, the placing of those nostrils differs. In some species they are close together. In others, they are much further apart. In a paper published in Biology Letters Conor Ryan, a marine biologist at the Scottish Association for Marine Science, suggests why that might be. Having two nostrils, he argues, helps whales smell in stereo (立体空间).Many types of baleen whales eat tiny animals known as zooplankton (浮游动物), whichthey catch by filtering (过滤) them from seawater using the sheets of fibrous baleen that have replaced teeth in their mouths. But to eat something you first have to find it. Toothed whales do not hunt by scent. In fact, the olfactory bulb—the part of the brain that processes smell—is absent in such creatures. But baleen whales still have olfactory bulbs, which suggests smell remains important. And scent can indeed give zooplankton away. Zooplankton like to eat other tiny creatures called phytoplankton (浮游植物). When these are under attack, they release a special gas called dimethyl sulphide, which in turn attracts baleen whales. Most animals have stereoscopic senses. Having two eyes, for instance, allows an animal to compare the images from each in order to perceive depth. Having two ears lets them locate the direction from which a sound is coming. Dr Ryan theorized that paired blowholes might bring baleen whales the same sorts of benefits. The farther apart the sensory organs are, the more information can be extracted by the animal that bears them. The researchers used drones to photograph the nostrils of 143 whales belonging to 14 different species. Sure enough, baleen whales that often eat zooplankton, such as the North Atlantic right whale, have nostrils that are farther apart than do those, such as humpback whales, that eat zooplankton occasionally. Besides allowing them to breathe, it seems that some whales use their blowholes to determine in which direction dinner lies.8.What do we know about whales’ nostrils according to the first two paragraphs?A.They are adapted ones.B.They are developed merely for smell.C.They are not easy to detect.D.They are fixed universally in numbers. 9.What plays a role when baleen whales hunt zooplankton?A.The teeth that baleen whales have.B.The smell that phytoplankton send.C.The sound waves that zooplankton create.D.The chemical signals that zooplankton give off.10.How is the concept of stereoscopic senses explained in paragraph 4?A.By quoting a theory.B.By using examples.C.By making contrast.D.By making inferences.11.What is the position of nostrils related to according to the last paragraph?A.The sense of smell.B.The possibility to attract food.C.The ability to locate food.D.The ability to communicate. In a world where everyone has their own opinions on just about everything, it’s common for people to be critical of each other’s mistakes and imperfections without noticing their own. Some individuals mistakenly think it’s their responsibility to make you into a better person. They do this by first pointing out your shortcomings directly and then providing advice on how you can improve. So what is the possible solution to criticism? If you are the one forcing others to feel ashamed of themselves, please stop. Make a conscious decision rather than highlight the negative aspect of a person’s performance or attitudes. You are more likely to offer helpful suggestions from the beginning. If you are on the receiving end of criticism, the “OK” response is a perfect solution. When someone comments negatively on a task you are doing or a personality issue of yours, a natural response is to defend and attack. However, this approach is rarely effective as it puts both parties on the defensive. Instead, simply reply with “OK”. This brief one-word response acknowledges the other person’s comment without agreeing with it or feeling necessary to engage in a debate about it.It’s crucial to stay connected to what the other person is talking about, and listen without getting upset, to be an objective observer. In fact, there is much that one can learn from a negative review. You can ask yourself: Did I make a mistake? Could I have done better? Did I give 100% of myself to the task at hand? If so, how can I improve myself? As for chronic criticizers: It is important to set strict boundary with them. Remove yourself from their presence when necessary. In any case, one can learn to be “OK” with criticism and not allow it to negatively impact your life or relationship with the other party.12.What might the author think of people who like to judge others?A.Self-centered.B.Responsible.C.Talkative.D.Warm-hearted. 13.What does a person mean by saying “OK” according to Paragraph 3?A.He thinks the advice is helpful.B.He completely agrees with the comments.C.He wants to avoid unnecessary arguments.D.He defends himself with the response. 14.What is the recommended action for dealing with chronic criticizers?A.Embrace their views.B.Criticize them in return.C.Avoid interaction if needed.D.Engage with them regularly.15.What is the most suitable title for the text?A.The Art of Giving Criticism B.Mastering Self-Defense against Criticism C.Dealing with Personal Relationships Flexibly D.The Path to Self-Improvement through CriticismLessons that are Learned from the OlympicsThe Olympic Games are enjoyed by everyone. I make three kinds of drawing when I am developing a print: observational sketches, composition thumbnails (缩略图) and then what I call the “ design drawing”, which is the final de sign to transfer onto my block. Here’s how all three methods work for me.Firstly, I see observational drawing as visual note taking and I take a ma gpie approach to collecting ideas. Sometimes that means an organised sketchbook and special pencils; sometimes I have to beg a pencil from a stranger and use the back of a paper bag. The trick is to take down anything that catches my fancy, even if it is just a couple of lines.I am careful to keep this collection of sparks safe—— it often takes me a couple of years to get around to using. an idea, especially some of the more random ones! I regularly scan through my collection, hunting for ideas and often combining several together, old and new, to create a print.I then use thumbnail sketches to plan my print’s composition and to develop the ideas got from my observational work. I use a soft pencil and cheap paper for this because I am seeking information, not an appealing drawing. Thumbnails help me to run through many options and experiments with little effort, while their very simplicity allows me to check my shapes are good and that I have the right balance of light and dark areas—— the key to a strong composition. The final step is to draw the final design as the basis for my print. I always try to develop the image as a whole rather than focusing on fragments, working over the entire drawing very loosely with lots of scribbled (潦草的) pencil lines. Then I edit repeatedly, keeping relevant lines and erasing others, sometimes cropping the work or enlarging it, often sacrificing pleasing details for the good of the whole.4. How does the author collect ideas?A.By communicating with strangers.B.By keeping the sparks in a notebook.C.By visiting museums and art galleries.D.By recording any possible inspirations.5. Which of the following can best describe the author’s way of doing composition?A.Better to be safe than sorry.B.Progress through trial and error.C.Always put your best foot forward.D.Be slow in choosing, but slower in changing.6. Which principle does the author follow in the final step?A.Focusing on the overall effect.B.Achieving simplicity and harmony.C.Working on the details persistently.D.Combining different painting styles.7. What is the author’s purpose in writing the text?A.To reveal some tricks in art design.B.To share experience in artistic creation.C.To discuss the elements of good prints.D.To analyze techniques of art expression. The conventional wisdom about insects has been that they are unthinking, unfeeling creatures whose behavior is entirely hardwired (天生的). But in the 1990s researchers began making surprising discoveries about insect minds. Some species of wasps (黄蜂) recognize their nest mates’ faces and acquire impressive social skills. For example, they can infer the fighting strengths of other wasps relative to their own just by watching other wasps fight among themselves.Given the substantial work on the complexity of insect cognition (认知), it might seem surprising that it took scientists so long to ask whether, if they are that smart, could also be sentient, capable of feeling. Since we have no direct window into the inner world of an animal that cannot verbally communicate its thoughts and feelings, the question of whether insects are sentient remained academic.15 years ago, I performed an experiment in which we asked whether bumblebees could learn about t hreat from their natural enemies. We built a plastic spider model with a mechanism that would briefly trap a bumblebee between two sponges before releasing it. The bumblebees showed a significant change in their behavior after being attacked by the robotic spider. Perhaps unsurprisingly, they learned to avoid flowers with spiders and meticulously scanned every flower before landing. Curiously, however, they some times even fled from imaginary threats, scanning and then abandoning a perfectly safe, spider-free flower. Although this incidental observation did not constitute formal ev idence of an emotionlike state, it did open the door to the idea that such states might exist in insects. Some research suggested that insects might have positive states of mind. Researchers discovered that bees actively seek out drugs such as nicotin e and caffein e when given the choice and even treat themselves with nicotin e when sick. Male fruit flies stressed by being robbed of mating opportunities prefer food containing alcohol, and bees even show withdrawal symptoms when removed from an alcohol-rich diet. Why would insects consume mind-altering substances if there isn't a mind to alter? But these suggestive hints of negative and positive mind states still fell short of what was needed to demonstrate that insects are sentient.8. What does the example of the wasps indicate?A.Insects show signs of intelligence.B.Insects can do complex calculations.C.Insects can socialize in a skillful way.D.Insects live in highly complex societies.9. What does the underlined word “meticulously” in paragraph 3 probably mean?A.Hesitantly. B.Casually. C.Eagerly. D.Carefully. 10. What was unexpected about the bumblebees’ behavior in the experiment?A.They avoided flowers with spiders.B.They settled on flowers despite threats.C.They might abandon spider-free flowers.D.They might get scared away by other insects.11. What does the text mainly discuss?A.What insects' various behavior can reveal.B.How insects communicate their thoughts.C.What amazing powers insects possess.D.Whether insects are capable of feeling. The scientist’s job is to figure out how the world works,to “torture (拷问)” Nature to reveal her secrets, as the 17th century philosopher Francis Bacon described it. But who are these people in the lab coats(or sports jackets, or T-shirts and jeans) and how do they work? It turns out that there is a good deal of mystery surrounding the mystery-solvers.“One of the greatest mysteries is the question of what it is about human beings—— brains, education, culture etc.—that makes them capable of doing science at all,” said Colin Allen, a cognitive scientist at Indiana University. Two vital ingredients seem to be necessary to make a scientist: the curiosity to seek out mysteries and the creativity to solve them. “Scientists exhibit a heightened level of curiosity,” reads a 2007 report on scientific creativity. “They go further and deeper into basic questions showing a passion for knowledge for its own sake.” Max Planck, one of the fathers of quantum physics, once said, the scientist “must have a vivid and intuitive imagination, for new ideas are not generated by deduction(推论), but by an artistically creative imagination.”But others disagree with this universal scientific mind. They believe that scientists have special abilities that set them apart. Discovering these abilities may be hard, Allen thinks, as many scientists will be reluctant to reveal them and would prefer to preserve the mystery of creativity, fearing that if it became an object of study it would lose its magic. But for Allen, this is all part of a bigger question of what lies behind anyone’s behavior.“We a re only just beginning to understand how the characteristics of organisms, including ourselves, aren’t the fixed products of either genes or of environment/culture, but each of us is the product of a continual interactive process in which we help build the environments that in turn shape us,” he said.“As long as our best technology for seeing inside the brain requires subjects to lie nearly motionless while surrounded by a giant magnet, we’re only going to make limited pro gress on these questions,” Allen said.12. Why does the author mention Max Planck in paragraph 3?A.To introduce a famous scientist. B.To stress the role of creativity in science.C.To compare different views on science. D.To illustrate what is curiosity inscience. 13. What do Allen's words in the last two paragraphs suggest?A.Human behavior is changeable and unpredictable.B.We are passively influenced by our genes and culture.C.Our interaction with the environment makes us who we are.D.Current technology has revealed a lot about human behavior.14. What is Allen’s attitude to the current study on the human brain?A.Cautious. B.Indifferent. C.Approving. D.Pessimistic. 15. What is a suitable title for the text?A.Who Are The Mystery-solvers B.Scientists Are Not Born But MadeC.Great Mystery: What Makes A Scientist D.Solving Mysteries: Inside A Scientist'sMindEmotions are inherent (固有的) in the human experience and play a significant role in children's lives. Emotional resilience is a critical component of success, helping children navigate life's inevitable ups and downs. 16 . Parents can try the following steps to help their children develop this power.Step 1: Build an emotional toolkitChildren aren't born knowing how to manage and express difficult feelings, such as anger or hurt. They need to learn about various emotions and what behaviors are acceptable. 17 .When parents openly express their emotions, regardless of whether they are appropriately expressed, children watch; listen, and learn. So, parents should establish healthy emotional habits to serve as a guide for children.18 . Some children may seek comfort in hugs, while others prefer physical space. Some may find gentle music soothing (安抚的), while others find it irritating. Parents can assist children in finding emotional resources based on their personality and individual needs.Step 2: 19Helping children connect with their emotional lives includes all emotions, not just pleasant ones. For instance, well-intentioned adults may say, “Don't be angry” or“There is nothing to be sad about”, but this may shut down the exploration of those feelings rather than addressing them. When this avoidance is repeated, it interferes with the understanding and mastery of difficult emotions.Step 3: Help children regulate and co-regulateChildren often need parents to help them navigate intense emotions. 20 . This process is called“co-regulation,” when one person soothes another.Co-regulation does not mean parents should always rush in to“fix” children's discomfort, particularly if they don't want help. Children also need space to work through struggles on their own to build emotional competence. The walk I’d plotted was 22 miles to the coast. However, bird flu is a completely different story. In 2003, the H5N1 bird flu swept across 15 countries, including China, with sufferers reporting chest pain, difficulty breathing, fever and severe coughing. More than 600 people were infected, and about 60 percent died. Now, another type of bird flu hit Shanghai and three neighboring provinces, and this time the virus is called H7N9. By the afternoon of April 11, the new virus had taken nine lives out of 35 infected, according to Xinhua News Agency. The “H” and “N” in the virus’ name refer to two kinds of proteins (蛋白质) on the surface of the virus. Any change of the numbers of the two proteins indicates a new mutation(变异). Most of the mutations only affect birds, such as chickens and pigeons, and don’t normally spread to humans. But once they do, the results can be disastrous.“Any time an animal influenza virus crosses to humans, it is a cause for concern, ” Malik Peiris, virologist (病毒学家) at the University of Hong Kong, told Nature magazine. Take the SARS epidemic (传染病) in 2003 as an example. The virus behind the disease is thought to have jumped to humans from animals. The virus was a complete “stranger” to human bodies, which hadn’t developed an immunity (免疫力) against it.But there is something more about the new H7N9 bird flu. Unlike the H5N1 bird flu, which causes severe sickness in birds, the H7N9 has been evolving under the radar(悄悄地) since it travels between birds without causing noticeable illness. That makes it difficult to keep track of the disease. The good news is that there’s so far no sign that the virus is spreading from person to person. But since there is no vaccine (疫苗) for the disease yet, the World Health Organization recommends that you wash your hands after meeting with sick people and before and after you eat or prepare food, and they also suggest avoiding contact with birds or their eggs.4.Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the text?A.The H5N1 bird flu turned out to have something to do with the SARS epidemic.B.More than 600 people across the world died from the H5N1 bird flu in 2003.C.Most of the mutations of the proteins in the bird flu virus are harmful to both birds and humans. Solaja lived on campus with 10 to 1s other students in the Arts and Business LLC.Three reasons may account for the prospective international stadents willingnessto consider LLCS.1. Connect with like-minded students: Prospective international students can choose an LLC to fully experience college life in a new country and find immediate support among residents: Unlike other housing arrangements, LLCS can provide a built-in community of like-minded individualsSolaja says a highlight of her experience in the LLC was"forming relationships with upper-year students in my program. This peer leader provided her with everything from academic support to guidance on how to survive Canadian winters. Many LLCS have upper-division students who serveas peer leaders.Australian Natasha Fitzpatrick says she's happy to share her love for travel and cultural exploration. "A group of us hired a car and traveled down to North Carolina sightseeing.”2. Participate in community activities: For those worried about being on the outside as a new international student, LLCS encourage participation through various on-and off-campus activities. For example, students in a fashion LLC have attended Toronto Fashion week Through LLCS, international students will have more opportunities to interact with domestic students, faculty and staff members outside classrooms,"says Shijuan Laurel Liu, assistant professor of Chinese and a partner with the Global Awareness LLC.In a Chinese New Year celebration associated with the LLC, for instance, students from her language and culture courses worked with Chinese students to introduce Chinese culture to the communitySolaja says coming from a different education system in Nigeria with sometimes unapproachable professors, she enjoyed LLC on-campus events like when she played board games with Waterloo professors and academic advisers.3. Network for job opportunities: International students who plan to gain work experience in the country they study in can benefit from LLCS that are associated with campus departments and staff. This can provide them with chances to network and inquire about work opportunities.Liu says when Chinese tutoring positions and graduate assistantships became available, she thought of international students from the Global Awareness LLC who previously helped her organize events. She also wrote reference letters for those students when they applied to graduate school.Robert C.Demezzo, director of residence life at Southern Connecticut State University, says LLCS "help many intermational students secure employment on campus.Solaja says her year living in Waterloo's Arts and Business LLC was one of her best decisions." You get what you put into the program," she says.8.What impressed Solaja most in the LLC?A.A group of students in the LLC rented a car to travel togetherB.She got a reference letter when she applied to graduate school.C.The peer leaders shared their experience both in study and daily lifeD.They celebrate the Chinese New Year together with an assistant professor9.Who are more likely to get Job opportunities?A.Students who have participated in more on-campus events.B.Students with better language skills especially in Chinese.C.Students who have global awareness and interest in network.D.Students with more working experience through LLCs.10.Which of the following statements is FALSE?A.Various activities help international students get oriented to the new life B.Individuals with similar minds will have the same career prospect.C.Each LLC focuses on a particular theme or academic interest area,D.LLCS Provide opportunities of communicating with domestic students11.Which of the following CANNOT be inferred from the passage?A.The teachers in Nigeria seldom participate in off-campus activitiesB.Many overseas students are not accustomed to the winter in CanadaC.The campus staff offer international students some academic support.D.LLCS help many international students find jobs after graduationDSince the Second World War, there has been an obvious trend, especially among the growing group of college students, toward early marriage. Many youths begin dating in the first stages of adolescence, ''go steady'' through high school, and marry before their formal education has been completed. In some quarters, there is much shaking of graying heads over the ways of rebellious youth. However, emotional maturity does not grow with age; it does not arrive automatically at twenty-one or twenty-five. Some achieve it surprisingly early, while others never do, even in three-score years and ten. Many students are marrying as an escape, not only from an unsatisfying home life, but also from their own personal problems of isolation and loneliness. However, any marriage entered into as an escape cannot prove entirely successful. The sad fact is that marriage seldom solves one's problems; more often, it merely worsens them. Furthermore, it is doubtful whether the home is capable of carrying all that the young are seeking to put into it; one might say that they are abandoning one idol only to worship another. Young people correctly understand that their parents are wrong in believing that success is the ultimate good, but they themselves are wrong in believing that they have found the true center of life's meaning. Their expectations of marriage are essentially unrealistic and therefore incapable of fulfillment. They want too much, and tragic disillusionment (幻想破灭) is often bound to follow.Shall we, then, join the chorus of those against early marriages? One cannot generalize: all early marriages are not bad any more than all later ones are good. Satisfactory marriages are determined not by how old one is, but by the emotional maturity of the partners. Therefore, each case must be judged on its own merits. If the early marriage is not an escape, if it is entered into with relatively few illusions or false expectations, and if it is economically practicable, why not? Good marriages can be made from sixteen to sixty, and so can bad ones.12.From Para. 1 we can learn that .A.emotional maturity automatically grow with ageB.some old people disapprove of early marriageC.growing group of college students are against early marriageD.the emotional expectations of young lovers are too high13.The author's attitude to marriage as an escape is .A.negative B.unsureC.indifferent D.acceptable14.It can be implied from the last paragraph that .A.early marriages should not be encouragedB.later marriages are always better than early marriagesC.each marriage should be looked at differentlyD.young people can benefit a lot from early marriage15.What's the best title of the passage?A.Disillusionment in Marriage B.Expectations for MarriageC.Marriages and Emotional Maturity D.The Trend of Early Marriages第二节微.博橙.子辅导(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

ADisneyland calls itself the happiest place in the world, but to keep visitors happy in its five locations across the globe, each theme park is adjusted to cater to local cultures and tastes. Outside of the two original resort areas in the US, Disneyland in California and Walt Disney World in Florida, the Disneylandsin Paris, Tokyo and Hong Kong offer subtly different layouts(布局)to make their millions of visitors each year feel at home.Disneyland ParisAfter excitedly entering Disneyland Paris, which opened in 1992, visitors can see an arcade(拱廊)that features a small replica(复制品) of the Statue of Liberty–a gift from France to the US in 1886, making it a fitting introduction to Europe’s only instance of this American theme park. The arcade also offers essential cover from the cold and rain that typically hit Pairs. As you venture further into Disneyland Paris, you will see a lot of European visionaries.Tokyo DisneylandOpened in 1983, Tokyo Disneyland is the third most visited of any theme park in the world after the two Disney parks in the US. Like Walt Disney World in Florida, Cinderella’s Castle is located at the center of the park, said to culture than Sleeping Beauty, whose castle is featured in the center of Disneyland California.Hong Kong DisneylandThe Hong Kong Disneyland, opened in 2005, incorporates feng shui and traditional Chinese elements into its design to attract tourists from the Chinese mainland.Feng shui balances the elements of wood, fire, earth, metal and water to create positive energy, and these elements can be seen throughout the theme park. Rocks represent stability and prevent good luck from flowing away, so two gigantic boulders(圆石)have been placed at the park’s entrance to stop energy from flowing out of the resort. Water stimulates fortune and wealth, and the theme park is full of lakes, ponds and streams---not to mention the large fountain featuring Disney characters placed at the main entrance of the park.21. Which of the following is the third most visited theme park in the world?A. Walt Disney WorldB. Disneyland ParisC. Hong Kong DisneylandD. Tokyo Disneyland22. According to the text, the Statue of Liberty replica in Disneyland Paris is to __________.A. serve as an introduction to American DisneylandB. reflect the historical relationship between France and the USC. show Americans’ artistic taste and knowledgeD. ensure the visitors’ safety from all over the world23. The passage is mainly about Disneyland theme parks’ _____________.A. popularity around the worldB. small similarities between themC. differences between each otherD. adjustments to local culturesBThe summer before my junior year in high school, my family and I took a trip to a completely new world. Being from a small town, I had never really been exposed to a large city such as New York City.As we stood waiting for a taxi outside of the airport, it was immediately apparent to me that New York City was not the same as New Caney, Texas. It seemed like everyone there was in a hurry to get to another place. The loud and constant sound of cars was heard throughout the entire trip. When we found our hotel in Times Square, I noticed that it wasn’t just the cars that were in a hurry. Everyone in thestreets was walking quickly that indicated a rush to be somewhere. Just standing and watching the many people rushing their won separate ways was an interesting observation. In addition to the people and transportation, the buildings were also an incredible sight. Each street was crammed with buildings that were built side by side with no room in between, and a number of skyscrapers were present throughout the city as well. The stores were also large compared to the ones of my little town. A small shop in New Caney would be a huge store that took up an entire building in New York. This would make it seem logical that the prices of everything in New York were almost double those back home. For the first time in my life, I was exposed to a little taste of what the real world is like. The incredible transportation, the huge skyscrapers, and all of the thousands of people made me anxious to grow up and perhaps move to an incredible city such as this one. Either way, my first trip to New York was one of the most incredible experiences of my life, one I will always treasure.24. According to the author, New Caney is _______.A. a very large cityB. a rather small townC. a busy and noisy placeD. an undeveloped village25. The author was impressed by all of the following EXCEPT_________.A. the peopleB. the transportationC. the buildingsD. the custom26. The underlined phrase “was creamed with” in Paragraph 3 can be replaced by “_________”.A. was full ofB. was ruined byC. was lacking inD. was narrowed by27. What is the main idea of the passage?A. Big cities can provide young people with more chancesB. A trip to New York City reduced my love of my hometownC. My visit to New York City was a life changing experienceD. One’s impression of a city is usually formed by the first visitCSaving money when you’re young is an important lesson. All good lessons and habits begin early, and saving is a skill that everyone needs. Many people – adults included – do not have a good sense of saving for the long run.Besides being a great way to ensure you have enough money for your old age, saving money when you are young can help your future.Making sure you don’t spend too much and continuing to save is a good way to accumulate wealth.I have put my earnings in a bank, and with investments(投资)and regular interest rates, have almost doubled my savings. Your money will double after twelve years at a modest rate of six percent interest. Many teens I know spend all the money they earn so it never has a chance to grow.Teems should realize that now is a prime time to begin saving. In high school many parents pay for almost everything, so expenses can be small. If you have a job, you should have fun with some of the money. But you should also save some so that it will grow for you without your working, and begin planning for your future. After high school, college is expensive and then“real”life begins, with expenses such as food and rent.If you can hold onto a good part of the money you earn as a teen, going to college and buying a house will be much easier. The earlier you begin saving, the more time the money has to grow.Saving early means you will have to work fewer years when you are older and allow you to spend time doing things you want. You also want to be financially secure so you can live the way you want without worrying. Also, you will be able to retire at a reasonable age.28. Which of the following is an advantage of saving money when young?A. It teachers important life lessonsB. It helps develop good habitsC. It results in a sense of responsibilityD. It contributes to one’s future29. The author advises teens ________.A. to put all their earnings in a bank for interestB. not to spend the money until twelve years laterC. to pay for their schooling by themselvesD. not to spend all their earnings having fun30. According to the author, what will “real” life bring about?A. Lower interest rateB. Higher living costC. Difficulty in finding jobsD. Less time to save money31. What is the best title of the passage?A. The Earlier, The BetterB. Money Is EverythingC. The Importance of SavingD. To Save for Your Old AgeDHe wrote that the “human mind is capable of excitement without the application of unpleasant and violent stimulants(兴奋剂,刺激物)”. And it appears that simply reading these words by William Wordsworth proves his point.Researchers at the University of Liverpool found the works of Shakespeare and Wordsworth and the like had a beneficial effect on the mind, making it active and excited by catching the reader’s attention and leading to moments of self-reflection.Using scanners, they monitored the brain activity of volunteers as they read pieces of classical English literature both in their original form and in a modern translation. And, according to the Sunday Telegraph, the experiment showed the more challenging writing and poetry set off far more electrical activity in the brain than the simple readings. The research also found poetry, in particular, increased activity in the right brain, an area concerned with “autobiographical memory”, which helped the reader to reflect on their own experiences in light of what they had read. The academics said this meant the classics were more useful than self-help books. The brain responses of 30 volunteers were monitored in the first part of the research as they read Shakespeare in its original and modern form. In one example, volunteers read a line from King Lear, “A father and a gracious aged man: him have you madded ”, before reading the simpler, “A father and a gracious aged man: him you have enraged”. Shakespeare's use of the adjective “mad” as a verb caused a higher level of brain activity than the straightforward translation. The next part of the research is looking at the extent to which poetry can affect psychology and provide benefit, Volunteers’brains were scanned while reading four lines by Wordsworth, and four “translate” lines were also provided. The result showed that the first version caused a greater degree of brain activity.“Poetry is not just a matter of style. It is a matter of deep versions of experience that add the emotional and biographical to the cognitive(认知的),” said Professor Davis, leader of the researchers. 32. The words by William Wordsworth in Paragraph 1 are used to ________.A. prove the poet’s pointB. introduce the topicC. serve as an exampleD. stress the importance of reading33. What is the beneficial effect of reading classics on the mind?A. It activates the reader’s mindB. It reflects the reader’s experienceC. It catches the reader’s attentionD. It monitors the reader’s brain activity34. What method is mainly used in the experiment?A. Comparing responsesB. Analyzing dataC. Observing activitiesD. Testing ability35. According to Professor Davis, poetry can affect the mind mainly because of __________.A. its styleB. its meaningC. its depthD. its writer第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。
