His father, a former army doctor, was murdered by his own serfs, leaving the family in financial and emotional distress. Despite these difficulties, Dostoevsky was able to study engineering at the St. Petersburg Institute of Military Engineering. While at the institute, Dostoevsky discovered his passion for literature and soon began writing his first novel, "Poor Folk". The novel, published in 1846, brought him critical acclaim and established his reputation as a talented and innovative writer. In 1849, Dostoevsky was arrested for participating in a discussion group critical of the Russian government. He was sentenced to death by firing squad but was granted a last-minute reprieve and instead served four years in a Siberian prison camp. This traumatic experience had a profound impact on Dostoevsky's writing, as he often explored themes of suffering, redemption, and the human condition in his later works. After his release from prison, Dostoevsky faced numerous personal and financial hardships. The novel tells the story of Raskolnikov, a impoverished student who murders an elderly pawnbroker and her sister. Crime_and_Punishment导读贺蓉

Crime and Punishment is a profound and thought-provoking novel by Fyodor Dostoevsky that explores the themes of guilt, redemption, and the nature of human suffering. Through the protagonist, Raskolnikov, Dostoevsky delves into the psychological and moral complexities of a man who commits a heinous crime and the subsequent spiral of self-destruction that ensues. The novel's central premise centers aroundRaskolnikov's belief in the "extraordinary" individual's right to transcend societal norms and commit acts that would be considered immoral or criminal by the majority. This philosophy, known as "Napoleonism," leads him to murder an elderly pawnbroker, believing that her death is justified in the name of a greater goal. However, Raskolnikov's actions are not withoutconsequences. Immediately following the murder, he is haunted by guilt and paranoia, fearing that his crime will be discovered. His mental state deteriorates as he struggles to reconcile his actions with his own moral conscience.Through Raskolnikov's torment, Dostoevsky explores the psychological and emotional toll that crime takes on the perpetrator. The guilt and shame that consume him eat away at his sanity, leading him to become alienated from society and consumed by self-loathing.Ultimately, Raskolnikov's path to redemption lies in his ability to confront his guilt and accept responsibility for his actions. Through the guidance of the compassionate Sonya, he comes to understand the true nature of suffering and the transformative power of love. In his final moments, he renounces his nihilistic beliefs and embraces the hope for a brighter future.Crime and Punishment is a timeless masterpiece that continues to resonate with readers today. Dostoevsky'sexploration of the human condition is both profound and deeply moving, offering insights into the complexities of guilt, suffering, and the potential for redemption.

The main character of the novel Crime and Punishment by Feodor Dostoevsky, Raskolnikov, is in reality two totally contradicting personalities. One part of him is the the intellectual. He is cold, unfeeling and inhumane. He exibits tremendous self-will. It is this side that enables him to commit the most terrible crime imaginable - taking another human life. The other part of his personality is warm And compassionate. This is the side of him that does charitable acts and fights out against the evil in his society. The confusion in Raskolnikov”s soul is best seen when he tries to help a girl in the street who has been raped and left to the whims of anyone who finds her. Raskolnikov tries to protect her from the evil of the street, then stops himself when he is revulsed by the wickedness of his society. Why did I take it upon myself to interfere? Was it for me to try to help? Let them eat one another alive - what is it to me? At one time Raskolnikov is both caring and concerned and yet he is able to push aside the whole affair by being totally indifferent. The goal of the novel is to make Raskolnikov into one character. Sonya helps bringRaskolnikov back into his emotional, humane side.Through her suffering, she shows him that it is important to have a love for all humanity and that no person should ever be able to exist like a parasite off of another person. Porifery, the official investigating the crime, acts as the intellectual who shows Roskolnikov that all intellect must be used for the good of mankind.。

Crime and Punishment" is a novel by Russian author Fyodor Dostoevsky, published in 1866. It is one of the most famous and influential works of Russian literature, exploring themes of morality, guilt, and redemption. After finishing the novel, I was left with mixed emotions. On the one hand, I was deeply impressed by Dostoevsky's ability to delve into the inner workings of his characters' minds, and to paint such vivid portraits of the people and society of 19th century Russia. On the other hand, I found some aspects of the book to be quite disturbing and unsettling. The main character of the novel is a young man named Raskolnikov, who is struggling with poverty and a sense of personal worthlessness. He comes up with a radical idea: that he can prove his superiority by committing a murder, and getting away with it. As the story unfolds, we see that Raskolnikov's plan goes disastrously wrong, and he is ultimately consumed by guilt and self-doubt.One of the most striking aspects of this novel is the way that Dostoevsky portrays Raskolnikov's inner turmoil. We are given access to his most private thoughts and feelings, as he struggles to reconcile his actions with his conscience. At times, the writing is almost uncomfortably intense, as we are forced to confront the darkest corners of Raskolnikov's mind.Another theme that I found particularly interesting was the question of morality and punishment. Raskolnikov believes that heis above the law, and that his superior intellect excuses him from the usual rules of society. Yet as the novel progresses, we see that he is ultimately punished not by the law, but by his own conscience. This raises all sorts of interesting questions about the role of punishment in society: is it meant to deter crime, or to exact revenge, or to provide justice for victims? And can punishment ever truly reform a person, or is it simply a form of retribution?Overall, "Crime and Punishment" is a complex and thought-provoking novel. It raises important questions about human nature, morality, and the nature of justice. While it can be a difficult and uncomfortable read at times, I would highly recommend it to anyone interested in Russian literature, or in the exploration of ethical and philosophical issues. One of the most intriguing aspects of "Crime and Punishment" is the way it explores the social and psychological conditions that drive people to commit crime. Through the character of Raskolnikov, Dostoevsky examines the effects of poverty, social isolation, and personal ambition on an individual’s moral compass. In the novel, we see Raskolnikov living in extreme poverty, struggling to make ends meet and provide for his family. He sees himself as a victim of society, and this sense of victimhood drives him to commit his crime. Similarly, his isolation from society –both in terms of his lack of connections with other people and his rejection of the existing social order – makes him feel that he is above the law, and that he can somehow justify his actions. Another key theme in the novel is the search for redemption. Raskolnikov is haunted by his crime, and he feels that he mustatone for it in some way. We see him grappling with his guilt throughout the novel, and ultimately he is forced to confront his crime and face the consequences of his actions. The novel also provides an insight into the social and political context of 19th century Russia. Through the characters and their interactions, Dostoevsky examines the different social classes and their relationships with each other. He also explores the changing political landscape of the time, with the growing discontent of the working classes and the growing influence of revolutionary ideas. In conclusion, "Crime and Punishment" is a groundbreaking and thought-provoking novel that explores a range of themes and issues. Its powerful portrayal of the effects of crime and guilt on the human psyche, as well as its critique of the social and political conditions of 19th century Russia, make it a timeless classic that continues to resonate with readers today.。
