The modern history has witnessed the explosion of population, the emergence of various means of transportation, and the boom of industry. In the meantime,, such environmental problems as global warming, oil spills, greenhouse gases and radioactive fallout have all emerged and caught fire among us. So devastating are these problems, that they have done great harm to the planet, causing the decrease of biodiversity and illness of human beings. Specifically, Ozone Pollution can cause respiratory disease, throat inflammation, chest pain and congestion; Water Pollution is now causing approximately 14,000 deaths per day; Carbon dioxide emissions are leading to ocean acidification.。

A clean, agreeable environment is a prerequisite for the success of individuals and the country as a whole. If government fails to give it enough attention, dire consequences will follow.1.。

1. Pollution and Environmental Protection环境保护1)素材使用法-常用素材参考a.SmogCause of SmogThe immense urban growth of Chinese cities substantially increases the need for consumer goods, vehicles and energy. This in turn increases the burning of fossil fuels to meet the needs of the industrial development and vehicle utilization, resulting in smog. Exposure to Smog poses a threat to the health of Chinese citizens.Threat of SmogA study from 2012 shows fine particles in the air, which cause respiratory and cardiovascular diseases are one of the key pollutants that are accounted for a large fraction of damage on the health of Chinese citizens. According to the Chinese Ministry of Health, industrial pollution has made cancer China’s leading cause of death. Every year, ambient air pollution alone killed hundreds of thousands of citizens.Only 1% of the country’s 560 million city dwellers bre athe air considered, because all of its major cities are constantly covered in a "toxic gray shroud". Lead poisoning or other types of local pollution continue to kill many Chinese children. 500 million people in China are without safe and clean drinking water.Solution of SmogIn an attempt to reduce air pollution, the Chinese government has made the decision to enforce stricter regulations. China had shut down and curtail operations at dozens of steel plants from November 2017, over the next five months under an aggressive action plan to reduce winter pollution in Beijing and its surrounding areas.Besides restrict policies, China’s strategy has been largely focusing on the development of other energy sources such as nuclear, hydro and compressed natural gas. These policies have been taking effect, and in 2015, the average PM2.5 in 74 key cities in monitoring system is 55 μg/m3, showing a 23.6% decrease as of 2013. Quoted from Wikipediab.Nuclear EnergyUse of Nuclear EnergyNuclear power is the use of nuclear reactions that release nuclear energy to generate heat, which most frequently is then used to produce electricity in a nuclear power plant.Threat of Nuclear EnergyHere is a social debate about nuclear power. Proponents, such as the World Nuclear Association and Environmentalists for Nuclear Energy, contend that nuclear power is a safe, sustainable energy source that reduces carbon emissions.Opponents, such as Greenpeace International contend that nuclear power poses many threats to people and the environment. Far-reaching fission power reactor accidents, or accidents that resulted in medium to long-lived fission product contamination of inhabited areas, have occurred in Generation I and II reactor designs. These include the Chernobyl disaster in 1986, the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster in 2011, and the more contained Three Mile Island accident in 1979.Chernobyl AccidentChernobyl accident occurred during a late-night safety test which simulated a station blackout power-failure and in which safety systems were deliberately turned off. A combination of inherent reactor design flaws and the reactor operators arranging the core in a manner contrary to the checklist for the test, eventually resulted in uncontrolled reaction conditions. During the accident, blast effects caused 2 deaths within the facility, later 134 were hospitalized with acute radiation symptoms, of which 28 firemen and employees died in the days-to-months afterward from the effects of acute radiation syndrome. Today Chernobyl is mostly a ghost town.2) Do you agree or disagree that progress is always good?

Human beings are dependent on the Earth's diversity of species for our survival. Wild species play a vital role in the maintenance of the planet’s ecological functions, yet everyday on the planet 40-100 species become extinct. Many countries across the world have not got an endangered species act that is strong enough to protect various species.2 人类生存离不开物种多样性段落大意:人类生存离不开物种多样性,但是各种动植物正在急速灭绝。

Human life cannot exist in the absence of complicated interactions of millions of species in biological systems. Yet as humans, we live during a period of the greatest loss of plant and animal species since the mega-extinctions of the Jurassic Period 65 million years ago. Harvard University biologist E.O. Wilson estimates "that 50,000 plant and animal species disappear each year due to tropical deforestation, expanding agriculture, and human settlement." Human activities impact the environment, including clearing agricultural land; air, land and water pollution; urban and suburban development; and the introduction of invasive or non-native wildlife species.

It is an undeniable fact that in recent years, environmental pollution, which becomes increasingly serious, has aroused the shared concern of countries around the world. A group of people hold the viewpoint that the government and big companies, rather than individuals, should be mainly responsible for the improvement of the environment. Nevertheless, I am inclined to believe that the government, large companies, as well as individuals should actively shoulder the responsibility of beautifying the environment. In this essay, I will demonstrate my point of view from the following aspects.Firstly, it is the responsibility of the government, representative of the people, to spare no efforts to ameliorate the environment. To be more specific, the government should stage some relevant laws and regulations to severely punish factories which produce a great number of pollutants and those who litter or spit deliberately. Furthermore, large sums of money should be invested in the improvement of the environment, such as the treatment of waste water, trash recycling and so on.In addition, large companies, on the other hand, should establish the self-consciousness to minimize the possibility of creating pollutants, which may not only be beneficial to the whole country but also to the companies themselves. As an illustration, some transnational corporations are striving toexplore some newly-burgeonedindustries of high-tech content, high additional value and low energy consumption, taking the place of some high contaminative industries.Last but not least, it is the top priority of individuals to improve their living space. There is a popular saying which goes like this: “It is everyone's obligation to protect the environment.” Most importantly, we should strengthen the consciousness of environmental protection, not only strictly being self-disciplined but also supervising people around. So to speak, it is unreasonable to claim that individuals have nothing to do with environmental protection. From what has been discussed above, we can safely draw the conclusion that the government, big companies and individuals should make their due contribution to salvage the deteriorating environment. For a truly peaceful existence, a person needs both a comfortable and satisfying career, as well as a happy living environment. However, one’s livin g environment is probably more important for contentment than one’s job, because people spend far more time at home than they do at word, and it is easier to change jobs than living environments. One way of judging the impact a certain factor has on our lives is by looking at how much time we spend exposed to it. In this sense, there’s no contest between the career and living environment: even the hardest-working employees still spend the majority of their time at home.Even if problems occur on the job, most people try of put those problems aside when they get to their house or apartment. People eat, sleep, bond with friends and family, and relax in their homes. My mother sometimes worksas many as sixty hours per week, but still gets to relax when she gets home each night. Despite working so many hours, she still spends the majority of her time in her own house.Since we experience the majority of our happy time at home, it is obvious that living environment affects us more than our job.Another reason living environment is more crucial to happiness than career is that it is much more difficult to change our home environment than it is a job. Most people only change apartments or house at most once a year, due to lease agreements and mortgages. However, changing jobs or companies is much easier, and more common. Changing living situations requires more planning and commitment. When I had to transfer to a new city for my career, it was much harder to deal with my living situation than to get settled into a new position at work.Due to relative difficulty associated with changing one’s home environment as opposed to changing one’s job, it should be abundantly clear just how important said home environment is to our overall happiness.Home is our comfort zone, the place where we unwind and relax. Home life affects our happiness more than career. After all, because of the amount of time spent at home as well as the difficulty of changing homes, the place we choose to live is often the very cornerstone of our entire lives. Modern agriculture methods like the use of pesticides and artificial fertilizers are widely used around the world. Along with such brings forth negative effects. The most obvious and detrimental impact of modern agriculture methods is environmental degradation. Many people believe that the environmental risks should not be taken into consideration sincemany people are suffering from the lack of food. I certainly disagree with this.To begin with, despite the fact that there are people who suffer from starvation, the reason is not because of the lack of food. As a matter of fact, tons of grains and corns are wasted every year. If the government and the general public really care about starving people, they should have enough ability and adequate materials to offer help. People suffer just because of bad management, worldwide corruption, and terrible indifference. So there is no need to destroy wilderness areas or use environmentally-damaging agricultural methods to increase productivity. The world nowadays has more food than we need. As long as corruption and bad management are eradicated, the world would see less people starving.Besides, the statement asserts that providing food for a growing number of people is more urgent than the protection of environment. I find this statement totally unconvincing. People’s survival depends on the environment. More often than not, whenever the environment gets damaged, the deleterious effects are always irreversible. In other words, once the environment on which we depend on is disrupted, our lives are placed at risk. Modern agriculture, although it provides enough food, has contaminated the water and soil. When people eat crops grown with polluted water and soil, diseases will break out sooner or later. Genetically modified crops, although their negative effects are not obvious and not yet confirmed, should also be treated with great care, for it is reported that dogs, cats, and other pets become sick after ingesting GM food. If human beings are negatively affected by modern agriculture, untold dire consequences will arise. People will suffer from diseases and thegovernment will shoulder considerable medical bills. Worse, the society may become unstable and inharmonious. From the above discussion, I can draw the conclusion that there are other more effective methods to address starvation. No matter how much food we produce, as long as corruption and wasteful use exist, there will always be starving people. Besides, a healthy natural environment is a basic requirement of our survival. We cannot increase food production at the expense of our environment, lest we are bound to suffer for our inconsideration and recklessness.。

A company has announced that itwishes to build a large factory near yourcommunity. Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of this new influence onyour community. Do you support or oppose the factory?Explain your position. New factories often bring many good things to a community, such as jobs andincreased prosperity. However, in my opinion, the benefits of having a factoryare outweighed by the risks. That is why I oppose the plan to build a factorynear my community.I believe that this city would be harmed by a large factory. In particular,a factory would destroy the quality of the air and water in town. Factoriesbring smog and pollution. In the long run, the environment will be hurt andpeople’s health will beaffected. Having a factory is not worth that rise.Of course, more jobs will be created by the factory. Our population willgrow. To accommodate more workers, more homes and stores will be needed. Do wereally want this much growth, so fast? If our town is going in growth, I wouldprefer slow growth with good planning. I don’t want to see rows of cheaplyconstructed townhouses. Our quality of life must be considered.I believe that this growth will change our city too much. I love myhome-town because it is a safe, small town. It is also easy to travel here. If wemust expand to hold new citizens, the small-town feel will be gone. I would missthat greatly.A factory would be helpful in some ways. However, I feel that the dangersare greater than the benefits. I cannot support a plan to build a factory here, and hope that others feel the same way.

Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? The best way for the government to protect the environment is to impose strict laws and regulations.范文:The issue of environmental protection is of utmost significance in today's world. When it comes to the best way for the government to protect the environment, some people believe that imposing strict laws and regulations is the most effective approach. I largely agree with this view.Imposing strict laws and regulations can have several significant benefits. Firstly, it sends a clear message that the government is serious about environmental protection. When there are strict rules in place, businesses and individuals are more likely to take environmental issues seriously and make efforts to comply with the regulations. This can lead to a reduction in pollution and the conservation of natural resources.Secondly, strict laws and regulations can provide a framework for consistent and enforceable environmental standards. Without such laws, it is difficult to ensure that everyone is doing their part to protect the environment. With clear guidelines and penalties for non-compliance, the government can ensure that environmental protection measures are implemented uniformly across the board.Furthermore, strict environmental laws can also encourage innovation and the development of cleaner technologies. When businesses are faced with the need to comply with strict regulations, they are often motivated toinvest in research and development to find more environmentally friendly solutions. This can lead to the creation of new jobs and a more sustainable economy in the long run. However, it is important to note that while strict laws and regulations are essential, they should not be the only approach. Education and public awareness campaigns are also crucial in fostering a sense of environmental responsibility among the general public. Additionally, the government should provide incentives for businesses and individuals to adopt environmentally friendly practices. In conclusion, I believe that imposing strict laws and regulations is an important and effective way for the government to protect the environment. While other measures should also be employed, the enforcement of strict environmental laws can set the foundation for a cleaner and more sustainable future.

Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? Governments should focus more on environmental protection rather than economic development. Use specific reasons and examples to support your answer.范文:In modern society, there is an ongoing debate about whether governments should prioritize environmental protection over economic development. While economic development is crucial for a nation's prosperity, I firmly believe that governments should focus more on environmental protection. On one hand, environmental protection is essential for the long term survival of humanity. Our planet is facing numerous environmental challenges such as air pollution, water contamination, and deforestation. These problems not only pose a threat to the health and well being of current generations but also have far reaching consequences for future generations. For example, air pollution has been linked to respiratory diseases, heart problems, and even cancer. If governments do not take strong measures to reduce pollution, the quality of life for people will continue to deteriorate. Moreover, environmental protection can also bring economic benefits in the long run. For instance, the development of renewable energy sources such as solar and wind power can create new job opportunities and stimulate economic growth. Many countries that have invested in clean energy technologies have seen a rise in employment in related industries. In addition, protecting natural resources like forests and oceans can support industries such as forestry, fishing, and tourism. On the other hand, overemphasizing economic development at the expense of the environment can lead to serious problems. Some developing countries, in their pursuit of rapid economic growth, have allowed heavy industries to pollute the environment without proper regulations. This has resulted in environmental disasters and a high cost of environmental remediation in the future. For example, some areas have suffered from soil pollution due to improper waste disposal from factories, which has made the land unfit for agricultural use.In conclusion, although economic development is important, environmental protection should be given more attention by governments. Along with such brings forth negative effects. The most obvious and detrimental impact of modern agriculture methods is environmental degradation. Many people believe that the environmental risks should not be taken into consideration since many people are suffering from the lack of food. I find this statement totally unconvincing.People’s survival depen ds on the environment. People will suffer from diseases and the government will shoulder considerable medical bills. We cannot increase food production at the expense of our environment, lest we are bound to suffer for our inconsideration and recklessness. It is an undeniable fact that in recent years, environmental pollution, which becomes increasingly serious, has aroused the shared concern of countries around the world. A group of people hold the viewpoint that the government and big companies, rather than individuals, should be mainly responsible for the improvement of the environment. Nevertheless, I am inclined tobelieve that the government, large companies, as well as individuals should actively shoulder the responsibility of beautifying the environment. As an illustration, some transnational corporations are striving to explore some newly-burgeonedindustries of high-tech content, high additional value and low energy consumption, taking the place of some high contaminative industries.Last but not least, it is the top priority of individuals to improve their living space. From what has been discussed above, we can safely draw the conclusion that the government, big companies and individualsshould make their due contribution to salvage the deteriorating environment. For a truly peaceful existence, a person needs both a comfortable and satisfying career, as well as a happy living environment. However, one’s living environment is probably more important for contentment than one’s job, because people spend far more time at home than they do at word, and it is easier to change jobs than living environments. My mother sometimes works as many as sixty hours per week, but still gets to relax when she gets home each night. When I had to transfer to a new city for my career, it was much harder to dealwith my living situation than to get settled into a new position at work.Due to relative difficulty associated with changing one’s home environment as o pposed to changing one’s job, it should be abundantly clear just how important said home environment is to our overall happiness.Home is our comfort zone, the place where we unwind and relax. Home life affects our happiness more than career. After all, because of the amount of time spent at home as well as the difficulty of changing homes, the place we choose to live is often the very cornerstone of our entire lives.。

Do you agree or disagree with the following statement:
Governments should focus on the preservation of the environment than on the economic development.

其实目前正在美国引起轩然大波 (is causing quite a stir的墨西哥湾漏油事件(the Gulf of Mexico Oil Spill / BP Oil Spill 就是最新也最扣题的好例子。
