Ironies can be divided into two categories: verbal irony and situational irony. Verbal irony is the simple form of irony. It is used in everyday life.Verbal irony can be subdivided into light irony and heavy irony.
For example, when someone hates the weather which spoils his trips and says," what a fine day!" he is ironical. the word "fine" is actually intended to mean "bad", "awful" and "abominable".

• Robbing a widow of her savings was certainly a noble act.
Situational irony
Body and soul free!”
dramatic irony
When the doctors came, they said she had died of heart disease – of joy that kills.

“Irony”

Irony is a figure of speech that achieves emphasis by saying the opposite of what is meant, the intended meaning of the words being the opposite of their usual sense. This form of irony is calledverbal irony, and differs from the stylistic device of dramatic irony. (See Note.)
(Here the wordencouragingis used ironically, for the circumstances were not encouraging at all ---they were, in fact, discouraging, for Miss Murdstone had said she didn't like boys.)
And Brutus is an honourable man.
...
I thrice presented him a kingly crown,
Which he did thrice refuse. Was this ambition?
Yet Brutus says he was ambitious;
And sure he is an honourable man.
I speak not to disprove what Brutus spoke,
But here I am to speak what I do know.
(Antony means exactly he opposite of what he says. By constant repetition of the statement "Brutus is an honourable man", after showing Caesar was not ambitious, he is really condemning Brutus as dishonourable for his part in killing Caesar. Many other instances of verbal irony can be found in this famous speech.)
(5) "Good Sir, this ring was given me by my wife;
And when she put it on, she made me vow
That I could neither sell, nor give, nor lose it."
The audience, and of course Portia herself, have a good laugh on hearing this.
(This passage implies that Colonel Cathcart was not democratic at all: his democratic spirit extended only to his own group; all others he treated with scorn and highhandedness.)
For Brutus is an honourable man;
So are they all, all honourable men---
Come I to speak in Caesar's funeral.
He was my friend, faithful and just to me;
But Brutus says he was ambitious,
Hath told you Caesar was ambitiou.
If it were ault;
And grievously hath Caesar answer'd it.
Here, under leave of Brutus and the rest---
However, not all verbal irony is of this light and humorous type. More often it is used to veil feelings in a subtle way, using words of praise where condemnation is meant, and vice versa; such irony can be light or heavy, depending on the circumstances.
(2) Like all the other officers at Group Headquarters except Major Danby, Colonel Cathcart wasinfused with the democratic spirit: he believed that all men were created equal, and he therefore spurned all men outside Group Headquarters with equal fervour. (Joseph Heller: Catch 22)
Portia, disguised as Balthazar, a lawyer, asks Bassanio for his ring as a token of recompense. Baaaanio does not know Balthazar is really Portia, and says, in dramatic irony:
(3) We arelucky. It's the other side on the thirteenth of December. That makes usfeelreal good. (David Parks: G.I.Diary)
(The writer means exactly the opposite of what he says. 13 is an unlucky number to most Westerners, and therefore they are definitily not lucky. And since on that date (December 13) they will land "on the other side" of the Pacific, in Vietnam, to fight in the Vietnam War, they don't feel good at all. In fact, they are all quite frightened at the prospect.)
NOTE:
Dramatic Irony applies mainly to drama, and has to do with the plot and structure of a play. In this type of irony, the audience is aware of something which a character on the stage is still ignorant of. The dramatic irony occurs when the character says something contrary to what is already known to the audience, and the effect achieved is either humorous or tragic, depending on the context. A simple instance of dramatic irony is this pasage fromThe Merchant of Venice, by Shakespeare:
A famous example of heavy irony is Mark Antony's speech at the burial ceremony of Caesar in Shakespeare'sJulius Caesar:
(4) "Friends, Romans, Countrymen, lend me your ears;
Below are some examples of light irony:
(1) "Generally speaking," said Miss Murdstone, "I don't like boys. How d'ye do, boy?"
Under these encouraging circumstances, I replied that I was very well, and that I hoped she was the same, with such indifferent grace that Miss Murdstone disposed of me in two words, ---"Wants manner!" (C.Dickens:David Copperfield)
In everyday life we often hear people using irony in their speech, though they may not be conscious of it. For instance, they may call a very thin boy "Fatty", or a very fat one "Skinny." Similarly we may hear people saying, "Oh, how I love queuing up" what in fact they hate it.
