Three passages consisting 200 most frequently used words summed up by a famous British corpus
Passage One
The old house of Mr Smith was only about one or two miles away from my home. So Mr Smith and I were not very familiar. We didn’t know each other well. He used to have got a very long new course where people, men or women, Children or grown ups couldgo running around, or up and down. Though many people said yes to such a good thing, some said no to it, which means that they were against it. Why? Because they thought that too many people working out right there in the course is really much too noisy.
Once Mr Smith left his house in his village. In fact, he looked into something without being permitted by the police. But at the end of the year, he came back, finding nothing, and never went far again.
Mr Smith was perhaps those sort of men who were always rather kind to others and who liked taking things apart after going through how they worked. Mrs Smith was the same as her husband. She liked being on her own while doing things and didn’t like being pushed too hard.
Passage Two
For the first few days both of themput off their tasks. For quite a long time every now and then they went over what was wrong with their machines. But they found nothing wrong. So they had to make the most of these machines and meanwhile they were thinking how they could get out of the trouble on their own or by themselves. They forgot who said all this must be finished very quickly. Anyway or any how, there was a little hope that they could make it though it was not an even road.
Passage Three
What does Joe think of thesegreat places where children under three can be taken good care of? That is not his world here but it is for children. That’s not another kind of life that he might want but that’s for children. Last but not least, keep these places a secret between you, Joe and me. If he hadbeen more careful, he would have seenus here. Where is he now?
