ADuring my high school years, the most important thing was what I was wearing to the Friday night dance and who I was taking. Although college was talked about, it was the least of my worries. When I was graduating eighth grade and starting high school, my older brother was graduating twelfth grade and going onto college. For my graduation, he gave me a card in which he wrote, “Enjoy your four years…, they go by fast.” I remember not believing him then, but looking back…, he was right. Those four years shaped who I was as a person, pushed me to my limit and encouraged me to become an adult. However, I was so completely absorbed in my junior and senior years of high school, that when someone spoke of college I brushed it off. I wasn't ready to leave my comfort zone of having all of my closest friends together and knowing what every single day was going to be like . Studying was something I did only AFTER I nailed my half-time dance performance. I knew my parents wanted me to go to college, so I told them I would go to commuity college and I didn’t worry about my SAT scores. When my senior year passed and everyone graduated and went off to their own college ,I started to wish I had done the same. My friends were living away, meeting new people, discovering new places, and I was living at home and driving to and from class every day. It seemed exactly like high school. I hated it! I thought college was supposed to be different! Why didn’t I take more time to research colleges and do the same? I ended up loving college and wishing I had four years to enjoy the campus atmosphere instead of two.My advice to anyone thinking about attending college is to think about it very seriously and look into all of your choices well ahead of time. Now I have graduated and I am working full time and I would do anything to go back to my high school days for a second chance!21.Why didn’t the author worry about his SAT scores?A.He had a gift for dance..B.He wanted to go to community collegeC.He was well prepared for the exam.D.He believed his brother would help him.22.When in high school, the author .A.buried himself in his study all the timeB.drove to and from class every dayC.enjoyed talking about future college lifeD.lived in the school except on holidays23.What did the author’s brother mean by “Enjoy your four years…, they go by fast.”?A.He wished the author to have more dance.B.He encouraged the author to leave his comfort zone.C.He advised the author to value the years.D.He suggested the author aim at a community college.24.Talking of his high school years, the author feels .A.regretful B.lonely C.angry D.pleasedBLiverpool, with its half a million citizens, is a big city. Dogs are usually not relaxed in a lab environment, but with a little petting and lots of treats they can be trained to sit still even in an MRI scanner. That’s how researchers in Hungary’s ELTE University were able to get images of their brains at work.Research fellow Attila Andics says it helped them better understand the dogs’ relationship with humans. “We have known for a long time that dogs and humans share similar social environment, but now our results show that dogs and humans also have similar brain mechanisms(大脑机制)to process social information,”said Andics. After training 11 dogs to stay motionless while their brains were scanned, the researchers checked their neurological(神经系统的)responses to about 200 emotionally significant sounds, from whining and crying to playful barking and laughing. They then compared the responses from human subjects. They found striking similarities.Andics says it opens new possibilities for research. “It establishes a foundation of a new branch of comparative neuroscience, because until now it was not possible to measure the brain activities of a non-primate(非人灵长类动物)and the primate brain in a single experiment,” said Andics. And what that tells ordinary dog owners, the Hungarian scientists say, is to treat your canine companions as friends, not mere animals, because they evidently understand human feelings.25. ASometimes two very different individuals (个体)become the best friends. For example,, who could have thought that a spider would become friends with a pig? But in American writer E.B.White’ novel Charlotte’s Web, this is exactly what happensWibur the pig grows up in a barn(谷仓) and makes many friends, including a spider called Charlotte. One day a sheep tells Wibur that he will finally be served up as dinner. But Charlotte decides to save her friend. To help Wibur,Charlotte writes words like “terrific”, “radiant” and “humble” on her web to praise Wibur. This makes the farmer believe that is too important to kill.Wibur is saved, but Charlotte is so tired that she dies. The book was first published in 1952. In over 60 years Charlotte has become one of the most famous spider s of all time. She teaches us about love and promise. “She is very, very loving under that crusty(暴躁),that ugly look,” Peter Neumeyer, writer of The Annotated Charlott’s Web The book’s success drew the attention of Hollywood filmmakers , however, they wanted a happier ending. White was strongly against this idea and as a result the film, like the book, ends with Charlotte’s death.Jen Doll, reporter with The Atlantic, believe that “death is a part of life”. She says this is one of the main messages of the book.As Charlotte tells Wibur, “You have been my frien d. That in itself is a wonderful thing. I wove(纺织)my webs for you because I like you. After all, what’s a life, anyway? We’re born, we live a little while and then we die. A spider’s life can’t help being something of a mess(杂乱), with all this trapping and eating flies. What if she doesn’t answer me? How will I know what she’s thinking?Yes, I’ll write her a letter. These things are easier to express in writing. “Dear Be-,” no, “Dea r Li-” no, “Dear Elizabeth,” I begin. The words flow freely, as seven-year-old memories are reborn.I ask her all the questions that have been left unanswered in my mind, and pray she will answer. I seal my thoughts in the perfect white envelope, and imagine Beth looking into the mailbox. Will she know why I’m writing? Maybe she once thought of writing the same letter. As the mailman takes my envelope from me forever, I wonder if I’ve made the right decision. Do I have the right to force myself into Bet h’s life again? Am I simply part of the past? I have taken the first stop. Beth has control of the situation now.One day has passed. Packaging is the silent but persuading salesman. There on the shelves, each bottle, can ,box, and jar has been carefully designed and measured to speak to the inner self of the consumer, because he/she is buying not only a product but also his/her belief in life. Scientists have studied consumer behavior recently and found that the look of the package has a great effect o n the “quality” of the product and on how well it sells, because “consumers generally cannot tell between a product and its package. Many products are packages and many packages are products.”, as Louis Cheskin, the first social scientist studying consumers’ feelings for packaging, noticed.Colors are one of the best tools in packaging. Studies of eye movement have shown that colours draw human attention quickly. Take V8 for example. For many years, the bright red color of tomatoes and carrots on the thin bottle makes you feel that is it very good for your body. And the word“green” today can keep food prices going up.Shapes are another attraction. Circles often suggest happiness and peacefulness, because these shapes are pleasing to both the eye and the heart. That’s why the round yellow M signs of McDonald’s are inviting to both young and old. This new consumer response to the colors and shapes of packages reminds producers and sellers that people by to satisfy both body and soul.28.According to the passage, _____ seems to be able to persuade a consumer to buy the product.A.the pleasing color of the packageB. he special taste of the productC. the strange shape of the packageD. the belief in the product29.If a package or a product is round in shape, it can ____________.A. bring excitement to the consumersB. attract the consumers’ attentionC. catch the eye movement of the consumersD produce a happy and peaceful feeling30.“And the word green today can keep food prices going up ” This sentence suggests thatconsumers today are _________.A. starting to notice the importance of new foodB. enjoying the beauty of nature more than beforeC. beginning to like green vegetablesD. paying more attention to their health31.It can be inferred from the passage that V8 is a kind of ________.A vegetable dish B. healthy juice C. iced drink D red vegetableDTayka Hotel de SalWhere:Tahua,BoliviaHow much:About $95 a nightWhy it’s cool:You’ve stayed at hotels m ade of brick or wood, but salt? That’s something few can claim.Tayka Hotel de Sal is made totally of salt—including the beds (though you’ll sleep on regular mattresses(床垫) and blankets). The hotel sits on the Salar de Uyuni,a prehistoric dried-up lake which i s the world’s biggest salt flat.Builders use the salt from the 4,633squaremile flat to make the bricks, and glue them together with a paste (糊) of wet salt that hardens when it dries. When rain starts to dissolve the hotel, the owners just mix up more salt paste to strengthen the bricks.Green Magic Nature ResortWhere:Vythiri,IndiaHow much:About $240 a nightWhy it’s cool:Taking a pulley(滑轮)-operated lift 86 feet to your treetop room is just the start of your adventure. As you look out of your open window—there is no glass!—you watch monkeys and birds in the rain forest canopy(罩篷).Later you might test your fear of heights by crossing the handmade rope bridge to the main part of the hotel,or just sit on your bamboo bed and read. You don’t even have to come dow n for breakfast—the hotel will send it up on the pulley-drawn “elevator”.Dog Bark Park Inn B&BWhere:Cottonwood,IdahoHow much:$92 a nightWhy it’s cool:This doghouse isn’t just for the family pet.Sweet_Willy is a 30-foot-tall dog with guest rooms in his belly.Climb the wooden stairs beside his hind leg to enter the door in his side. You can relax in the main bedroom,go up a few steps of the loft(阁楼) in Willy’s head,or hang out inside his nose.Although you have a full private bathroom in your quarters, there is also a toilet in the 12-foot-tall fire hydrant(消防栓) outside.Gamirasu Cave HotelWhere:Ayvali,TurkeyHow much:Between $130 and $475 a nightWhy it’s cool:This is caveman cool!Experience what it was like 5,000 years ago, when people lived in these mountain caves formed by volcanic ash.But your stay will be much more modern.Bathrooms and electricity provide what you expect from a modern hotel, and the white volcanic ash, called tufa, keeps the rooms cool,—there is heat in winter.)32.What do we know about Tayka Hotel de Sal?A.It is located on a prehistoric lake.B.It should be protected against the rain.C.Everything in the hotel is made of salt.D.You have to cross a rope bridge to the hotel.33.What is the similarity of the four hotels?A.Being expensive.B.Being comfortable.C.Being natural.D.Being unique.34.What does the underlined words “Sweet Willy” refer to?A.The name of the hotel.B.The name of the hotel owner.C.The building of Dog Bark Park Inn B&B.D.The name of a pet dog of the hotel owner.35.Which of the hotels makes you have a feeling of living in the far past?A.Tayka Hotel de Sal.B.Green Magic Nature Resort.C.Dog Bark Park Inn B&B.D.Gamirasu Cave Hotel.第二节(共5小题;每小题2分, 满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。

ADuring my high school years, the most important thing was what I was wearing to the Friday night dance and who I was taking. Although college was talked about, it was the least of my worries. When I was graduating eighth grade and starting high school, my older brother was graduating twelfth grade and going onto college. For my graduation, he gave me a card in which he wrote, “Enjoy your four years…, they go by fast.”I remember not believing him then, but looking back…, he was right. You will simply have to look the cash machine straight in the eye, declares National Cash Registers, a multinational company that makes automated teller machines, or ATMs. NCR has shown its first example machine that is believed to be the future of banking. Instead of asking you for your PIN on a screen, the Super Teller-Stella for short, asks you orally through a loudspeaker to look straight ahead while an infrared camera turns to your head, then your eye, and finally takes an infrared photograph of your iris . For identification purposes, an iris picture is better than a fingerprint, with around 256 noticeable characteristics compared with 40 for fingerprints. This means that the chances of someone else being recognized in your place is about 1 in 1020.

APlan ahead to make your family trip run smoothlyFamily vacations are cherished memories. Keeping children entertained on the road or during a flight, however, can be challenging. The best way to cut down on anxiety? Plan ahead.Avoid giving children snacks that contain sugar and caffeine. Sweet treats keep them happy and quiet for five minutes, as it fills them with unusable energy that will turn into crankiness (脾气坏) when the sugar wears off. Bring fun, small snacks like flavored baked chips, apple sauce, raisins, granola bars—and top it off with a little protein like and cheese sticks to keep the blood sugar levels nice and steady.Bring plenty of plastic or paper bags. This is the perfect time to put those spare bags around the house to use. Store them in your purse or pocket, as well as in the car. This is a quick solution for garbage, diaper wrapping or motion sickness.Avoid extra costs on bulk items you will need during the trip. When flying, purchase bulk items like diapers, formula, wipes at your destination. In the past it was convenient and free to check these items. Now each checked luggage item costs $25 or more on average. When driving, do the opposite; take your bulk items to avoid extra trips to the store when you arrive, which can help you avoid impulse travel purchases.Bring a full change of clothing for each child. Keep these items within fairly easy reach. When a spill or mess happens, this will help parents avoid unexpected (and unbudgeted) clothing purchases.Travel planning can help make family vacations what they are supposed to be: Fun!1.Which of the following can keep the blood sugar levels nice and steady?A.Coffee. B.Apple pie with sugar in it. C.Candies. D.Cheese sticks.2.Why should you bring plenty of plastic or paper bags during vacation?A.Because you can use them to keep garbage, vomit (呕吐物) and wrap diaper.B.Because they can prevent you from being stolen.C.Because big bags can hold more items, which brings you much convenience.D.Because they can save you $25.3.Which is the proper place for you to buy bulk items when driving?A.At the destination.B.At wherever you can buy cheaper ones.C.At the place you just go out of the things you need.D.In the stores near your house.4.What should parents do to avoid unexpected clothing purchases during their vacation?A.Do not let children make their clothes dirty.B.Bring a full change of clothing for each child.C.Wash the dirty clothes frequently.D.Do not allow children eat during their vacation.BFor several years, Americans have enjoyed tele-shopping—watching TV and buying things by phone. Now tele-shopping is starting in Europe (欧洲). In a number of European countries, people can turn on their TVs and shop for clothes, jewelry, food, toys, and many other things.Tele-shopping is becoming popular in Sweden, for example. The biggest Swedish company sells different kinds of things on TV in 15 European countries, and in one year it made $100 million. In France there are two tele-shopping channels, and the French spend about $20 million a year to buy things through these channels. In Germany, until last year tele-shopping was only possible on one channel for 1 hour every day. Then the government allowed(允许) more tele-shopping. Other channels can open fortele-business, including(包括) the largest American tele-shopping company and a 24 hour tele-shopping company. German businessmen are hoping this new tele-shopping will help them sell more things. Some people like tele-shopping because it allows them to do their shopping without leaving their homes. With all the problems of traffic in the cities, this is an important reason. But at the same time, other Europeans do not like this new way of shopping. They call tele-shopping “junk (垃圾) on the air〞. Many Europeans usually worry about the quality (质量) of the things for sale on TV. Good quality is important to them, and they believe they cannot be sure about the quality of the things on TV.The need for high quality means that European tele-shopping companies will have to be different from the American companies. They will have to be more careful about the quality of the things they sell. They will also have to work harder to sell things that the buyers cannot touch or see in person.5. People like tele-shopping because it is __________.A. AmericanB. cheaperC. easierD. more popular6. Some Europeans don’t like tele-shopping because they __________A. don’t like to buy thingsB. don’t watch TVC. believe the things sold on TV are expensiveD. think the things sold on TV are bad quality7. In Germany, tele-shopping may __________A. help businessmen get more moneyB. keep the shops open longerC. have fewer buyersD. bring better TV programmes8. The best title of this passage is __________A. American Tele-shoppingB. Tele-shopping CompaniesC. Tele-shopping in EuropeD. Tele-shopping—Junk on the AirCIf you’re tired of the Mediterraneanand don’t want to head to Disney again, perhaps it’s time for a summer holiday in space. Russia has declared plans for its first floating hotel, 217 miles above earth, and it is something of an offering with good service.Hosting just seven guests in a four cabins, the accommodation will boast huge windows with views back to earth and tasty microwave meals will be served instead of the ones often used by astronauts.Just getting there will be an adventure in itself—it will take two days aboard a Soyuz rocket—and it won’t exactly be a budget holiday: A five-day stay will cost you£100, 000 to£500, 000 for your journey. The hotel is due to open by 2016 and, according to those behind it, will be far more comfortable than the International Space Station (ISS) used by astronauts and cosmonauts. In the weightlessness of space, visitors can choose to have beds that are either vertical(垂直的) or horizontal. Tourists, who will be accompanied by experienced crew, will dine on food prepared on Earth and sent up on the rocket, to be reheated in microwave ovens. Many kinds of delicacies will be available.Iced tea, mineral water and fruit juices will be available, but alcohol will be strictly prohibited. Toilets will use flowing air instead of water to move waste through the system. Waste water will be recycled.Sergei Kostenko, chief executive of Orbital Technologies which will construct the hotel, said: “Our planned module inside will not remind you of the International Space Station. A hotel should be comfortable inside, and it will be possible to look at the Earth. The hotel will be aimed at wealthy individuals and people working for private companies who want to do research in space.〞The hotel can also be used as an emergency bolthole (避难处) for astronauts aboard the International Space Station if there is a crisis.9. The company, Orbital Technologies, has already begun to build the spacehotel.D. In the near future, a space trip for most of the people can be realized.DI wish there would be a way to describe China in simple terms but that’s impossible. For the most part Chinese people are friendly, easy-going and optimistic. They are curious and unusually patient and they are also the hardest-working people I have ever met.In China, family is everything. In my English classes when the students were asked what they would do if they only had a few hours to live, most students told me how they would spend their last few hours with their families and parents. Many times the subjects in the classes center on families and friends. I teach many students a year, talking to them freely. The cost of living here is very low compared with that of the US. The city of Xiang Fan I live in isn’t large and I live better. Non-imported(非出口的) foods are very cheap, so are clothing andarticles of everyday use. The cost of public transportation is very low, too. Chinese value education. However, it is reported that many children can’t afford the expenses of schooling and are forced to leave school in some poor areas in China. But they organized Project Hope many years ago. It creates conditions for the poor children to go back to school. In my opinion, Project Hope is of great importance to the development of the rural education. When we read news of China in the west, rarely, if ever, will we see anything mentioned of the positive changes China has gone through. While it is true that economic miracles have not reached many areas of China, but we also have the same problems. When I am asked which country I consider better, China or the US, my answer has always been the same, “We are not worse or better than each other, we are only different.〞13. What does the author think of Chinese people?A. He thinks most Chinese people hardly work.B. He thinks most Chinese people are proud.C. He praises most Chinese people a lot.D. He dislikes most Chinese people.14. What are not cheap in China in the author’s opinion?A. Clothes and shoes made in China.B. Local foodsC. Public transportation tickets.D. Imported foods15. We can infer from the passage that the author thinks __________.A. the westerners have got to know China wellB. China’s economic miracles have appeared everywhereC. the progress of China is seldom reported in the USD. the education in rural areas is never cared about in China第二节〔共5小题;每一小题2分,总分为10分〕根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最优选项。

If I was rich,I would definitely be content(满足的) with my life.My father always stressed (强调)his belief in happiness. I can remember him lecturing me about how money does not make one happy and how other things in life such as health, family, friends, and memorable experiences make a person genuinely happy. At that time in my life,I did not put any thought into his words as usual. At a young age,I noticed the media seemed to portray(描绘) the wealthy as happy people that add value to our society. At high school I still sought a career that would produce a high salary. After my second year of college,I started my first job in an accounting department, where I found myself extremely bored. Every day I had to do boring work. In addition,I had to live away from friends and family. I noticed having money to spend when you are by yourself was not satisfying.I began to think back to what my dad always said. After two months on the job,I truly realized that a more satisfying experience for me would have been doing an ordinary parttime job for far less money. No matter how high the salary of this position was,I would never be capable of fulfilling a happy life and making a career out of this job.As the summer drew to a close,I truly understood the meaning of my dad’s words. Shortly after her parents’ painful divorce when she was nine, she found herself in the Netherlands at the start of World War II. Hepburn watched helplessly as several of her relatives were killed. She survived by eating tulip bulbs and carried secret messages for the resistance in her ballet shoes. She dreamed of becoming a ballet dancer but was told she was too tall and not talented enough to be a success.Hepburn then turned to musicals and spent most of her time as a chorus girl (舞女). She had some small movie roles but it was not until Roman Holiday (1953) that she became a star. With her good manners and delicate figure, she was perfect in the role of a European princess. She took the Best Actress Oscar for her performance. In 1988 Hepburn began her most important role—as a Goodwill Ambassador(大使) for UNICEF(United Nations Children’s Fund). She traveled to the poorest places, doing her best to provide care and create awareness of the difficult situations in which some children live. When Hepburn passed away, a message displayed a t her funeral read, “In losing Audrey, the world not only lost a movie star, we lost a princess, an angel, a person who inspired us all and whose selfless and loving examples shall always be remembered.”24. To help Wibur,Charlotte writes words like “terrific”, “radiant”and “humble”on her web to praise Wibur. This makes the farmer believe that is too important to kill.Wibur is saved, but Charlotte is so tired that she dies. The book was first published in 1952. In over 60 years Charlotte has become one of the most famous spiders of all time. She teaches us about love and promise. “She is very, very loving under that crusty(暴躁),that ugly look,”Peter Neumeyer, writer of The Annotated Charlott’s Web The book’s success drew the attention of Hollywood filmmakers , however, they wanted a happier ending. She says this is one of the main messages of the book.As Charlotte tells Wibur, “You have been my friend. That in itself is a wonderful thing. I wove(纺织)my webs for you because I like you. After all, what’s a life, anyway? We’re born, we live a little while and then we die. A spider’s life can’t help being something of a mess(杂乱), with all this trapping and eating flies.
