If
If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue, Or walk with Kings – nor lose the common touch, If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you; If all men count with you, but none too much, If you can fill the unforgiving minute With sixty seconds’ worth of distance run, Yours is the Earth and everything that’s in it, And – which is more – you’ll be a Man, my son!

• In this autobiographical essay, Evelyn Herald recounts her embarrassing moments during her first days of college. With a chronologically balanced pattern of narration, the author focuses on three incidents– sitting in the wrong class, falling down in the cafeteria and witnessing the upper-class football player having the same experience. Coupling narration with description, she gives us a detailed account of the process, the after-effect and the significant insight into herself.
Structure of the text (2) – Unlike an expository writing, which usually expresses the main idea in a thesis statement, in a narrative writing, the point is shown through dialogues, actions or events. The three incidents that are treated expansively in this essay are related to one another by their implicit messages- the mistakes the author made and her reaction towards the mistakes. It was in this process that the author achieved significant insight into herself.

Fahrenheit Scale
Gabriel Fahrenheit
Celsius Scale Celsius Scale refers to a scale of hotness, or temperature, first established by the Swedish scientist Anders Celsius (1701~1744) in 1742. On this scale, the unit of temperature is the degree Celsius (℃ ); water freezes at 0℃ and boils at 100℃ (under agreed standard atmospheric conditions), although when Celsius originally devised the scale he made 0°the boiling point and 100°the freezing point. The Celsius scale was formerly commonly known as the centigrade scale because of the 100 divisions between the freezing and boiling points of water. To convert from degrees Celsius to degrees Fahrenheit multiply by 9/5 and add 32.
The countryside of Britain is well known for its beauty and many contrasts: its bare mountains and moorland, its lakes, rivers and woods, and its long, often wild coastline. Many of the most beautiful areas are national parks and are protected from development. When British people think of farmland, as well as open spaces, they imagine cows or sheep in green fields enclosed by hedges篱笆 or stone walls, and fields of wheat and barley. Many people associate the countryside with peace and relaxation. They spend their free time walking or cycling there, or go to the country for a picnic or a pub lunch. Only a few people who live in the country work on farms. farms.

9 I made my way through the food line and tiptoed to a table, where I collapsed in relief.安心坐下 Suddenly I heard a crash that sounded vaguely familiar. I looked up to see that another poor soul had met the fate that I’d thought was reserved for only me. I was even more surprised when I saw who the poor soul was: the very composed, very upper class football player I’d seen just days before (though he didn’t look quite so composed wearing spaghetti on the front of his shirt). My heart went out to him as people began to cheer and clap as they had for me. He got up, hands held high above his head in a victory clasp, grinning from ear to ear. I expected him to slink out of the cafeteria as I had, but instead he turned around and began preparing another tray. And that’s when I realized I had been taking myself far too seriously.

After a moment, he searched through a stack and handed me a dark-red book, fairly thick. 13 “The Last of the Just,” I read. “By Andre SchwarzBart. 2 Countless times I've seen that if you cast your bread upon the waters, it will come back hundred-fold. But there is one story in particular that, for me, illustrates the point. To this day it can still move me to tears. 3 On a crisp spring day in 1942, Max Freed, the owner of Hercules Manufacturing, a shirt-making company in Winnipeg, Canada, was returning to his factory with a bundle of orders tucked neatly beneath his arm. Business was good and Max, although only 30, was carving out a niche as a successful businessman.

While I appreciate the fame, I sometimes wish that I were known more for what I do today. I now make more than 50 charity appearances a year and must have raised over $500 million for worthwhile causes.

Part A Text
In recent months there have been all sorts of stories about whether unpaid internships are legal. As the demand for internships have increased since the recession made finding a job much harder for graduates, more companies have started to offer unpaid internships, or those only covering expenses. Although interns don’t have any particular legal protection at the moment, the definition of legal work includes having set hours, being engaged in a task for an extended period of time and being given a defined role rather than just observing.
