For the first group the room was painted white, for the second, dark brown. Movement of each group was followed by an electrical system under the carpet. The experiment revealed (显示,透露)that those who entered the dark brown room walked more quickly, covered more area, and spent less time in the room than the people in the white environment.Dark brown stimulated (刺激) more activity, but the activity ended sooner. Another experiment presented three groups of subjects with the same photographs, but each group was in a different kind of room — an “ugly” room like a messy storeroom, an average room, such as a nice office, and a tastefully designed living room with carpets and drapes (帘子). Results showed that the subjects in the beautiful room tended (趋向,往往是) to give higher ratings to the faces than did those in the ugly room. Some studies suggest that students do better on tests taken in the ugly room. Other studies suggest that students do better on tests taken in comfortable, attractive rooms than in ordinary-looking or ugly rooms.1. A The underline word “subjects” means __________.A. courses to be studiedB. topics to be discussedC. persons to be experimented withD. students to be examined(B)One silly question I simply can’t stand is “How do you feel?” Usually the question is asked of a man in action — a man on the go, walking along the streets, or busily working at his desk. So what do you expect him to say? He’ll probably say, “Fine, I’m all right,” but you have put a bug in his ear —maybe now he’s not sure. If you are a good friend, you may have s een something in his face or his walk that he overlooked (忽略) that morning. It starts worrying him a little. First thing you know, he looks in a mirror to see if everything is all right, while you go merrily on your way asking someone else “How do you feel?”Every question has its time and place. It’s perfectly acceptable, for example, to ask “How do you feel?” if you’re visiting a close friend in the hospital. But if the fellow is walking on both legs, hurrying to take a train, or sitting at his desk working, do not ask him that silly question. When George Bernard Shaw, a famous writer of plays, was in his eighties, someone asked him, “How do you feel?” Shaw put him in his place. “When you reach my age,” he said, “either you feel all right or you’re dead.”5. A According to the writer, greetings such as “How do you feel?” __________.A. show one’s consideration for othersB. are a good way to make friendsC. are proper to ask a man in actionD. generally make one feel uneasy6. A The question “How do you feel?” seems to be correct and suitable when asked of ______.A. a man working at his deskB. a person having lost a close friendC. a stranger who looks somewhat worriedD. a friend who is ill7. A George Bernard Shaw’s reply in the text shows his ___________.A. cheerfulnessB. clevernessC. abilityD. polite8. As I dropped my dad off, I 12 him, dressed in his work clothes, getting his 13 from the trunk (车尾箱) of my car. My father is a cement finisher (水泥休整工).In that instant, it 15 to me that he actually got down on his hands and knees to sweat over hot concrete to make a living for his family. And he did this 16 , no matter how hot it got. Never, not once, had I heard him 17 about it. To him we were “worth” it. And never once did he “charge” us for it.When he closed the trunk, his tools set off to the side, he walked over to my window to 18 me five dollars. I rolled down the window and said , “Good-bye, dad. Keep your five dollars. It’s 19 me. Don’t work too hard. When someone tells you something that is true, but leaves out important information that should be included, he can create a false impression. For example, someone might say, “I just won a hundred dollars on the lottery. It was great. I took that dollar ticket back to the store and turned it i n for one hundred dollars!”This guy’s a winner, right? Maybe, maybe not. We then discover that he bought two hundred tickets, and only one was a winner. He’s really a big loser! He didn’t say anything that was false, but he left out important information on purpose. That’s called a half-truth. Half-truths are not technically lies, but they are just as dishonest.Untrustworthy candidates in political campaigns often use this method. Let’s say that during Governor Smith’s last term, her state lost one million jobs and gained three million jobs. Then she seeks another term. One of her opponents runs an ad saying, “During Governor Smith’s term, the state lost one million jobs!” That’s true. However an honest statement would have been, “During Governor Smith’s term, the state had a net gain of two million jobs.”Advertisers will sometimes use half-truths. It’s against the law to make false claims so they try to mislead you with the truth. An ad might boast, “Nine out of ten doctors recommend Yucky Pills to cure nose pimples.” It fails to mention that they only asked ten doctors and nine of them work for the Yucky Corporation. This kind of deception happens too often. It’s a sad fact of life: Lies are lies, and sometimes the truth can lie as well.1. B Which statement is true according to the article?A. You can’t trust doctors.B. All governors help their states.C. The truth can be used in dishonest ways.D. Whenever people tell the truth, they are really lying.2. A The underlined word “deceive” mean “______________”.A. prove what they know is untrueB. cause someone to accept as trueC. force you to believe somethingD. pay no attention to3. A The author clearly wants people to ______________.A. never trust anyoneB. vote for female candidatesC. think carefully about what they read and hearD. wear mismatched socks during political campaigns4. This story may have happened a while back, but it was a lesson which has stayed with me and helped me ever since. It was Thanksgiving Day and I was volunteering with my parents at a shelter for the poor. We stood behind the counter dishing out hot food to whoever came in. Most of our dinners looked like they had been having hard times, their clothes old, worn and dry. In short, they looked poor! Then, a man came in, who looked anything but poor. He was well dressed, wearing an expensive suit. I wondered what he was doing there and my jaw dropped in amazement when he joined the line for food. The closer he came to my service station, the more I muttered. What was this man doing? I wanted to know. Surely he wasn’t going to take food. Then my mother quietly took me to one side. She said, “You have assu med that the needs of the people who come here must be purely physical: hunger, inadequate(不充足的)shelter and needs are emotional? What if he needs comfort, friends, or just to be among other human beings? ”Her words hit me like a ton of bricks! I felt like I should apologize to the man, but I didn’t.About a week later the shelter received a large donation from an anonymous source. I can’t help but wonder if it came from that man. Now, whenever I meet others, I remember my mother’s words and try to send kindness and blessings to them, regardless of how they look.Needs aren’t always visible. But kindness always makes a d ifference. (291W)1. Kobe is Japan’s sixth largest city. It is also one of the world’s largest ports. Within minutes, Kobe was a disaster area. How bad was the damage? The earthquake was the worst to hit Japan in 72 years. There were more than 6,000 people dead. More than 35,000 were injured, and nearly 310,000 were left homeless. Some 75,000 buildings were damaged or destroyed. Total damage was estimated at $90 billion. Were the Japanese prepared for earthquakes? They thought they were. They were expecting a big earthquake to strike one of their major cities. But they did not know when, where, or how big the earthquake would be. Architects and engineers believed they had designed earthquake-proof buildings, transportation, and public services. Kobe’s few minutes of earth tremors shattered that belief. What did people learn from the Kobe earthquake? What happened in Kobe suggests that earthquake hazard was not taken seriously enough. Some people believe that more can be done to reduce damage. They propose the following. More work should be put into quake-proof buildings. Walls should be built to protect towns on the coast from large waves. Providers of emergency services must be better trained and better prepared. Citizens must be better educated on what to do when an earthquake strikes. The major barrier to doing more is cost. Japan finds itself trying balance the cost against the risk of a strong earthquake.36. Which sentence best tells what this passage says?A. Cities can be made earthquake proof.B. Salt water is already entering the country’s drinking water supply, as well as damaging plants that produce fruit and vegetable. Without urgent help, the country’s days are numbered. But Tuvalu is not the first place to face sinking into the sea. Venice, a historic city in Italy best known for its canals, has sunk about 24 cm over the past 100 years. Experts say that it will have sunk another 20 -50 cm by 2050. A century ago, St. Mark’s Square, the lowest point in the city, flooded about nine times a year. Nowadays, it happens more than 100 times. While Venice is slowly sinking into themud on which it stands, Tuvalu’s rising sea level is caused by global warming. The average global temperature has increased by almost 0.5 degrees centigrade over the past century; scientists expect it to rise by extra 1-3 degrees over the next 100 years.Warmer weather makes glaciers(冰川) melt, adding more water to the ocean. The warmer temperatures also make water expand, so it takes up more space, causing the sea level to rise. The sea level has risen about 10 -25 cm in the last 100 years. The main cause of global warming is human pollution. Through burning coal, oil and gas, people have been increasing the greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, such as CO2. This adds to the power of the greenhouse effect, making the planet even warmer. Many scientists believe that if the warming is not stopped, there will be huge climate changes. The sea level could rise by one meter this century.Should this come true, the sea would swallow up millions of homes and the world would be flooded with “climate r efugees” loo king for somewhere to live in.47. We can infer from the second paragraph that ________.A. Tuvalu is in danger of being swallowed up by the seaB. all Tuvalu’s islands are about ten meters above the sea levelC. drinking water in Tuvalu will not be destroyedD. Tuvalu has never been flooded by storms and waves48. It is necessary for us to learn about them, so we can be prepared!Flooding happens during heavy rains, when rivers overflow, when ocean waves come onshore, when snow melts (融化) too fast or when dams or banks break. When they come onto land, the heavy rain, strong winds and heavy waves can damage buildings, trees and cars.Tornadoes are nature’s most violent storms. Tornadoes must always be taken seriously. Tornadoes can be very dangerous, sometimes even deadly. They come from powerful thunderstorms and appear as moving. Tornado winds can reach 300 miles per hour. They cause damage when they land the ground. They can damage an area one mile wide and 50 miles long. While thunder won’t hurt you, lightning will! So, it’s imp ortant to pay attention when you hear thunder. Thunderstorms happen mostly in summer and every thunderstormhas lightning. Lightning can strike people and buildings, which is very dangerous.A volcano is a mountain with a large-opening at the top through which melting rock, steam, gases escape from time to time with violent force from inside the earth. 智贤中学高三英语小题训练4
Life is what we make of it. How can we make our life better? Learning to focus can help us in many ways. It can help us realize what we really want in life. It can help us make good decisions. It can also help us to accept ourselves just the way we are.
Start with easy exercises like staring at a picture on the wall for a few minutes. Once you learn how to block out your surroundings, your focus will improve.
Learn to manage your pressure. Many athletes require intense focus in their training and games. They try to spare some time to calm themselves down.
Another mind exercise you can do is imagining yourself in a desired situation, and then you work around your picture. An example of this would be to imagine yourself in a potentially stressful situation, like a singer in a concert. Try to play out the scene in your mind what you would do if different things were to happen.
Why not make li sts? Make a list for the things you need to accomplish. Study your lists carefully and see where you can move things around. It is unwise to use your list without flexibility.
A better way to improve your focus is to take breaks. Your breaks should be as quiet as possible. Read a book, take a walk, or visit a daycare. Go and do anything that will give your brain a rest.
