How empathy unfolds
1 The moment Hope, just nine months old, saw another baby fall, tears welled up in her own eyes and she crawled off to be comforted by her mother, as though it were she who had been hurt. And 15-month-old Michael went to get his own teddy bear for his crying friend Paul; when Paul kept crying, Michael retrieved Paul’s security blanket for him. Both these small acts of sympathy and caring were observed by mothers trained to record such incidents of empathy in action. The results of the study suggest that the roots of empathy can be traced to infancy. Virtually from the day they are born infants are upset when they hear another infant crying – a response some see as the earliest precursor of empathy.

To adjust to these chemicals would require time on the scale that is nature’s; it would require not merely the years of a man’s life but the life of generations. And even this, were it by some miracle possible, would be futile, for the new chemicals come from our laboratories in an endless stream; almost five hundred annually find their way into actual use in the United States alone. The figure is staggering and its implications are not easily grasped—500 new chemicals to which the bodies of men and animals are required somehow to adapt each year, chemicals totally outside the limits of biologic experience.

It involves the ability to plan and prioritize tasks effectively in order to make the most of the limited time available. In the context of university studies, timemanagement becomes even more significant as students are faced with multiple deadlines and a multitude of responsibilities.Having effective time management skills allows students to achieve a balance between their academic and personal lives. By carefully planning their schedules, students can allocate sufficient time for studying, attending classes, and completing assignments, while also having time for extracurricular activities and socializing. Without proper time management, students often find themselves overwhelmed with a backlog of tasks, leading to stress, anxiety, and a decline in their academic performance. One key aspect of time management is the ability to prioritize tasks according to their importance and deadlines. By identifying the most urgent and significant tasks, students can allocate additional time and resources to ensure that these tasks are completed on time and to a high standard. Prioritization also helps students avoid wasting time on less important tasks and allows them to focus their energy on tasks that will contribute the most to their academic success.Another essential component of time management is effective planning and organization. Students should create a weekly or monthly schedule that includes all their academicand personal commitments. This allows them to have a clear overview of their upcoming tasks and helps them avoid last-minute rushes or missed deadlines. Breaking down larger tasks into smaller, manageable parts can also make them less overwhelming and easier to accomplish. In addition to planning and prioritizing, time management also involves self-discipline and the ability to resist distractions. With the advent of technology, students are often tempted to spend excessive amounts of time on social media or other online activities, which can severely impact their productivity. Developing the discipline to set aside specific time slots for leisure activities and sticking to those schedules can greatly enhance productivity and make better use of time.In conclusion, time management is an essential skill for university students to develop in order to succeed academically and maintain a balanced lifestyle. By planning, prioritizing, and organizing their tasks effectively, students can optimize their productivity, reduce stress, and achieve their goals. With proper time management, students can make the most of their university experience and set themselves up for future success.。

Here I would like to make three relevant points.First, wide reading should be taken as a priority in the learning process, because it is through reading that we get the most language input. Next, learning by heart as many well-written essays as possible is also very important. On the one hand, rote learning/learning by rote is indeed of little help, but on the other hand, memorization/learning by heart with a good understanding will certainly be of benefit/do good to us. With an enormous store of excellent essays in our heads, we will find it much easier to express ourselves in English. Finally, it is critical that we should put what we have learned into practice. By doing more reading, writing, listening and speaking, we will be able to accomplish the task of perfecting our English.Part III TextBComprehension Check1. c2. c3. d4. a5. c6. bPart IV Theme-Related Language Learning TasksModel paperHow I Learn at CollegeI went to school in a small town near Chengdu and now I am studying law at Fudan University in Shanghai. Passage OneQuestions 44 to 48 are based on the following passage.Looking back on my childhood, I am convinced that naturalists are born and not made. Although we were all brought up in the same way, my brothers and sisters soon abandoned their flowers and insects. Unlike them, I had no ear for music and languages. I was not an early reader and I could not do mental arithmetic. Before World War I we spent our summer holidays in Hungary. I have only the dim memory of the house we lived in, of my room and my toys. Nor do I recall clearly the large family of grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins who gathered next door. But I do have a crystal-clear memory of the dogs, the farm animals, the local birds and, above all the insects.I am a naturalist, not a scientist. I have a strong love of the natural world, and my enthusiasm has led me into varied investigations. I love discussing my favorite topics and enjoy burning theSFLEP New College English Achievement Test (Band 2) 3midnight oil while reading about other people’s observations and discoveries. Then something happens that brings these observations together in my conscious mind. Suddenly you fancy you see the answer to the riddle (谜), because it all seems to fit together. This has resulted in my publishing 300 papers and books, which some might honor with the title of scientific research. But curiosity, a keen eye, a good memory and enjoyment of the animal and plant world do not make a scientist: one of the outstanding and essential qualities required is self-discipline, a quality I lack. A scientist requires not only self-discipline but all training, determination and a goal. A scientist, up to a point, can be made. A naturalist is born. If you can combine the two, you get the best of both worlds.44. The first paragraph tells us that the author ________.A) was born to a naturalist’s familyB) lost his hearing when he was a childC) didn’t like his broth ers and sistersD) was interested in flowers and insects in his childhood45. The author can’t remember his relatives clearly because ________.A) he didn’t live very long with themB) he was fully occupied with observing natureC) he was too young when he lived with themD) the family was extremely large46. It can be inferred from the passage that the author was ________.A) no more than a born naturalistB) a naturalist but not a scientistC) a scientist as well as a naturalistD) first of all a scientist47. The author says that he is a naturalist rather than a scientist probably because he thinks he________.A) lacks some of the qualities required of a scientistB) has a great deal of trouble doing mental arithmeticC) just reads about other people’s o bservations and discoveriesD) comes up with solutions in a most natural way48. According to the author, a born naturalist should first of all be ________.A) full of ambitionB) full of enthusiasmC) knowledgeableD) self-disciplinedPassage TwoQuestions 49 to 53 are based on the following passage. We find that bright children are rarely held back by mixed ability teaching. On the contrary, both their knowledge and experience are enriched. We feel that there are many disadvantages in4 外教社®全新版大学英语2级学业测试streaming (把…按能力分班) pupils. It does not take into account the fact that children develop at different rates. It can have a bad effect on both the bright and the not-so-bright child. After all, it can be quite discouraging to be at the bottom of the top grade!Besides, it is rather unreal to grade people just according to their intellectual ability. This is only one aspect of their total personality. We are concerned to develop the abilities of all our pupils to the full, not just their academic ability. We also value personal qualities and social skills, and we find that mixed-ability teaching contributes to all these aspects of learning. In our classrooms, we work in various ways. The pupils often work in groups: this gives them the opportunity to learn to co-operate, to share, and to develop leadership skills. They also learn how to cope with personal problems as well as learning how to think, to make decisions, to analyze and evaluate, and to communicate effectively. The pupils learn from each other as well as from the teacher.Sometimes the pupils work in pairs; sometimes they work on individual tasks and assignments, and they can do this at their own speed. They also have some formal class teaching when this is appropriate. We encourage our pupils to use the library, and we teach them the skills they need in order to do this efficiently. An advanced pupil can do advanced work: it does not matter what age the child is. We expect our pupils to do their best, not their least, and we give them every encouragement to attain this goal.49. In the passage the author’s attitude towards “mixed-ability teaching” is ________.A) criticalB) questioningC) approvingD) objective50. By “held back” (Line 1) the author means “________”.A) made to remain in the same classesB) forced to study in the lower classesC) drawn to their studiesD) prevented from advancing51. The author argues that a teacher’s chief concern should be the development of the student’s________.A) personal qualities and social skillsB) total personalityC) learning ability and communicative skillsD) intellectual ability52. Which of the following is NOT MENTIONED in the third paragraph?A) Group work gives pupils the opportunity to learn to work together with each other.B) Pupils also learn to develop their reasoning abilities.C) Group work provides pupils with the opportunity to learn to be capable organizers.D) Pupils also learn how to participate in teaching activities.53. The author’s purpose in writing this passage is to ________.A) argue for teaching bright and not-so-bright pupils in the same classSFLEP New College English Achievement Test (Band 2) 5B) recommend pair work and group work for classroom activitiesC) offer advice on the proper use of the libraryD) emphasize the importance of appropriate formal classroom teachingSection B (10%)Directions: In this section, you are going to read a passage with ten statements attached to it. They had neither planned to buy a house of their own nor planned to buy lots of furniture. They were going to rent a house either with furniture or they would buy used furniture. But they soon learned about a new way that more and more people were using in settling down in new places. The renting of home furnishings-beds, tables, dishes, and so on, has become one of the fastest growing businesses in the United States. What kinds of people rent their home furnishings instead of buying them? Many kinds ofpeople do: international business people, government officials, airline (航空公司) workers, young married couples - people whose job or business may force them to move frequently from one city (or country) to another. They are saved the trouble and cost of moving their furniture each time. They simply rent new furniture when they reach their new homes. Young people with little money do not want to buy cheap furniture that they won't like any more within a short time. They prefer to wait untilthey have enough money to buy furniture they really like. Meanwhile, they find that they can rent better quality furniture than they could afford to buy.One family, who now have a large, beautiful home of their own, liked their rented furniture so much that they decided to keep renting it instead of buying new things. But they don't like to tell people about it. The idea of renting home furnishings is still quite new, and they are not sure what their neighbors might think.6.The text is mainly about why some people rent their furniture.A.TB.F答案:A7.According to the text, home furnishings may include beds, tables, dishes and so on.A.TB.F答案:A8.People who have to move frequently rent home furnishings.A.TB.F答案:A9.One reason that people rent home furnishings is that they like new furniture.A.TB.F答案:B10.To the family who have a large, beautiful home of their own, renting furniture is not a wise thing to do.A.TB.F答案:BIn the United States, it is not customary to telephone someone very early in the morning. If you telephone him early in the day, while he is shaving or having breakfast, the time of the call shows that the matter is very important and requires immediate attention. The same meaning is attached to telephone calls made after 11:00 pm. If someone receives a call during sleeping hours, he assumes it's a matter of life or death. The time chosen for the call communicates its importance. In social life, time plays a very important part. In the U.S.A. guests tend to feel they are not highly regarded if the invitation to a dinner party is extended only three or four days before the party date. But it is not true in all countries. In other areas of the world, it may be considered foolish to make an appointment too far in advance because plans which are made for a date more than a week away tend to be forgotten. The meaning of time differs in different parts of the world. Thus, misunderstandings arise between people from different cultures that treat time differently. Promptness is valued highly in American life, for example. If people are not prompt, they may be regarded as impolite or not fully responsible. In the U.S. no one would think of keeping a business associate waiting for an hour, it would be too impolite. A person, who is 5 minutes late, will say a few words of explanation, though perhaps he will not complete the sentence.11.What is the main idea of this passage? ________A.It is not customary to telephone someone in the morning and in sleeping hours in the U.S.B.The role of time in social life over the world.C.If people are late, they may be regarded as impolite or not fully responsible in the U.S.D.Not every country treats the concept of time as the same.答案:B12.What does it mean in the passage if you call someone during his or her sleeping hours? _______A.A matter of work.B.A matter of life or death.C.You want to see him or her.D.You want to make an appointment with him or her.答案:B13.Which of the following time is proper if you want to make an appointment with your friend in the U.S. A.?A.at 7:00 amB.at 4:00 pmC.at the midnightD.at 4 am答案:B14.Which of the following statements is true according to the passage? ________A.In the U.S.A. guests tend to feel they are highly regarded if the invitation to a dinner party is extended only three or four days before the party date.B.No misunderstandings arise between people from different cultures about the concept of time.C.It may be considered foolish to make an appointment well in advance in the U.S.A..D.Promptness is valued highly in American life.答案:D15.From the passage we can safely infer that _______A.it’s a matter of lif e or death if you call someone in day time.B.the meaning of time differs in different parts of the world.C.it makes no difference in the U.S. whether you are early or late for a business party.D.if a person is late for a date, he needn’t make some explanation.答案:B三、词汇与语法16.How often do you _________your brother?A.hear aboutB.hear ofC.hear toD.hear from答案:D17.Small arms _______ often carried by the soldiers.A.areB.hasC.wasD.have答案:A18.______ he was tired he went on working.A.EvenB.YetC.AlthoughD.In spite答案:C19.________ you are leaving tomorrow, we can have dinner together tonight.A.SinceB.WhileC.ForD.Before答案:A20.His salary as a driver is much higher than ________.A.a porterB.is a porterC.as a porterD.that of a porter答案:D四、完型填空The world is not only hungry; it is also thirsty for water. Passage One
I don’t often lose things and I’m especially careful with money, so I was quite surprised when I reached for my wallet and it wasn’t there. At first, I thought it was possible that I could have left it at home. Then I remembered taking it out to pay for the taxi, so I knew I had it with me just before I walked into the restaurant. I wondered if it was possible that it could have slipped out of my pocketwhile I was eating dinner. Thinking about that possibility, I turned and walked back to the tablewhere I had been sitting. Unfortunately, there were several people sitting at the table at the time, so I called a waiter and explained to him that my wallet had fallen out of my pocket while I was sitting at the table a few minutes earlier. I had the waiter go over to the table to see if my wallet was on the floor. While the waiter was looking for it, the manager of the restaurant came up to me and asked me if anything was wrong. I didn’t want to get a lot of people involved in the problem, but I knew I had to get the wallet back. I told the manager what had happened. He had me describe the wallet to him, and then he insisted that I report the missing wallet to the police. I told him that I didn’t particularly want to get the police involved in it; besides, I was in a hurry because I had an appointment with my doctor in just a few minutes. I explained to him that my biggest worry at the moment was how I was going to pay the check. He told me not to worry about that. He had me write down my name and address, and he said he would send me a bill.
