2021-2022年高二上学期第一次(10月)月考英语试题含答案

2021年高二上学期第一次(10月)月考英语试题含答案第二部分阅读理解(共两节,满分40分)第一节(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)I was in a shopping mall recently, and I decided to go and get a cup of tea. As I was making my way to the coffee shop, I noticed an old gentleman rather poorly dressed sitting on a bench nearby. I knew from the first sight that he was in need of some kind of help. He had a little lunch in front of him and was wholeheartedly enjoying it.There was a young man in front of me in the line also waiting to be served. The young man handed the servant a twenty-dollar bill and asked for an orange juice as well as a favor. The servant looked at the young man with a little surprise, not fully understanding him. The young man asked her to give the juice to the old gentleman eating his lunch outside on the bench. The young man also told her that he would be watching every second so that she would be pletely safe at all times. Later, there was a wonderful exchange (交换) between the waitress and the old man. I only wished I had taken a photo of the smiles on both of their faces. As I was thinking about this event later on, I wondered why the young man didn’t just perform this act of kindness himself. I thought he was hoping thatthis act of kindness might inspire others to do something for the old man as well. Thinking of the happy smiles on the old man’s face, I felt how worthwhile it is to help others.21. The underlined word “favor” in Para. 2 refers to .A. passing the young man a cup of orange juiceB. buying lunch for the old manC. giving the juice to the old manD. exchanging meals with the old man22. Which of the following can be used to describe the young man?A. Humorous and helpful.B. Generous and proud.C. Rich and friendly.D. Kind and considerate.23. In the author’s opinion, the young man asked the servant to take the juice to the old man so that .A. more people would be inspired to do good deedsB. he would bee famous for his good deedC. the old man could probably accept itD. he would bee a friend of the servantBThe Horn of Plenty is one of the largest natural health food stores withinthe Greater Hamilton area. We are big supporters of buying locally and we are here to tell you why it is so important for your family, the munity and the environment. The concept (概念) of buying locally is simple: buy food produced, grown, or raised as close to your home as possible. Not only will your food be fresher and tastier, but you are helping protect the environment and are supporting businesses within your munity and reducing pollution.Better for the environmentSustainability (持续性) and global warming are such hot topics at the moment, and many people want to do their bit to help support a healthier environment. Small action carried out by many people can make a big difference. Most materials in an average North American meal have traveled about 1,500 miles to get from farm to plate. To cut out a big part of this travel would greatly reduce not only pollution from transportation and r efrigeration but also customers’ expenses as well.Taste and nutritional contentLocally-grown fruits and vegetables are usually sold within 24 hours of being harvested. Because they are picked at the height of ripeness (成熟) and travel only a short distance to the market, their freshness, nutrition, and flavor arekept. Produce trucked in from far away may lose both taste and nutritional content.munity and home valuesWhen you buy direct from a farmer or buy locally-grown foods, you are engaging in a time-honored tradition between a grower and an eater. You also help keep dollars within your munity.24. It can be inferred from the third paragraph that .A. global warming is the most serious problem nowB. the increased cost of transporting food is passed on to the customersC. North American food is rich in various kinds of materialsD. most people support buying locally25. Locally-grown fruits and vegetables taste good mostly because .A. they are sent to the market at a high speedB. they are not polluted by chemical fertilizerC. they can be harvested at any timeD. they are picked when they are fully grown26. According to the author, when you buy locally-grown foods .A. you can see how fruits and vegetables growB. you will bee much healthier and prettierC. you will contribute to protecting the environmentD. you are making money from your munity27. What does the passage mainly talk about?A. The benefits of buying locally.B. The popularity of the Horn of Plenty.C. The importance of protecting the environment.D. The way to keep your food tasty and healthy.CPeople often say that money talks. They mean that a person with a lot of money can say how he or she wants things done. But it is not easy to earn enough money to gain this kind of power.Sometimes people in business feel businesses are as dangerous as wild animals in a jungle. They have to be careful if they are to survive the jungle out there. They must not be led into making bogus investments (投资). Bogus means something that is not real. It was said that the word came from a criminal (罪犯) whose name was Borghese. Borghese wrote checks to people although he didn’t have money. After he wrote the checks, he would disappear. So, people who were paid with his checks received nothing.People trying to earn money also must be aware of being ripped off. A personwho is ripped off has had something stolen, or at least has been treated unfairly. To keep from getting ripped off in business, people had better try to earn money step by step instead of getting rich quickly. To be successful, a person in business works hard and tries to get down to brass tacks. For example, a salesman may talk about his product without saying the price. You get down to brass tacks when you say, “It sounds good, but how much does it cost?” Word experts thought the expression came from sailors on ships. They cleaned the bottom of a boat. After they finished, they were down to the brass tacks, the copper pieces that held the boat together. So, if we get down to brass tacks, we can avoid rip-offs and bogus ways of earning money.28. What would happen to those people who make bogus investments?A. They would lose a lot of money.B. They would disappear after that.C. They would receive nothing but checks.D. They were more likely to be punished by law.29. The best way to avoid being ripped off in business is to .A. work as hard as possibleB. ask for checks in advanceC. avoid being wealthy eagerlyD. earn as more money as you can30. When doing business, people prefer to get down to brass tacks to .A. keep themselves from being fooledB. develop more ways of earning moneyC. reduce their production costsD. get in touch with more partners31. In which part of a newspaper can we find this passage?A. News and business.B. The history of language.C. Words and their stories.D. Funny new expressions.DMore often than not, people will look at the phone screen to check for new messages or have a quick look at Facebook. Researchers have now found why we often feel such a strong need to look at our phones. Using the mobile phone, they say, is contagious (蔓延的).A team says people are twice as likely to pull out their phones to check their text messages or e-mails if they’re with someone that has just done the same. They also found that women were more likely to use their mobile phones than men. The team watched students in dining halls and coffee shops around the college, observing pairs of college students sitting at tables for as long as 20 minutes and recording their cellphone use. “What we found most interesting was just how often people were using their mobile phones,” Dr. Daniel Kruger, the study’s co-author, said. “Every person we studi ed used his or her phoneat least once while one woman was on hers about half of the time. People saw others checking their ining messages and began to check their own.”“Cellphones create another choice for one’s attention and may both support and disagre e with live social activities,” the researchers wrote. Kruger believed this could be explained by the effects of social inclusion (包含) and exclusion (排除). If one person in a pair starts a conversation through his phone, the other one may feel excluded and then feel the need to get in touch with others so as not to feel left out.The researchers note that they might not get the same result in a study of different people—for example, older adults, who may not have a habit of using cellphones so often.32. From the study we can learn that .A. people can affect each other in using mobile phonesB. using mobile phones has nothing to do with social activitiesC. men are more likely to be affected by others’ using mobile phonesD. the sound of mobile phones makes using mobile phones contagious33. If old adults are studied, the researchers .A. will find that old adults don’t like to use mobile phonesB. will find that mobile phones are harmful to healthC. will no longer like using mobile phonesD. may reach a different result34. Which can best describe the author’s attitude towards using mobile phones?A. Supportive.B. Objective.C. Indifferent.D. Opposed.35. Which can be the best title for the passage?A. How to use mobile phones correctlyB. Why college students like mobile phonesC. Relation between mobile phones and people’s hobbiesD. Something interesting about the habit of using mobile phones第二节 (共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

AWith little rain, ancient Egyptians relied mostly on the Nile River to water their crops, so they could only grow certain kinds of food. They mainly grew wheat and barley (大麦).The Egyptians made the wheat into bread, soup and porridge, and they also added hops (啤酒花) to make the barley into beer. In fact, some people think that the Egyptians would not have be gun growing grain if they hadn’t liked beer so much. Many Egyptian models of beer jars have been found, which the Egyptians put into graves of dead people so that they would have beer in the next world. The Egyptians also ate meat. They went to a butcher shop and bought meat there, just as people do today. But because it rarely rains in Egypt, they could have the meat outside in the yard of the store instead of inside. Click on the left and you will see a model of a butcher shop, which wasalso found in somebody’s grave. Can you see the different cuts of meat all laid out? There is a whole leg of mutton at the very bottom. However, Egyptians thought pigs carried infectious disease. Here is a picture of some real Egyptian dates which were put into people’s graves for them to eat in the next world, and which were kept in the dry climate for three thousand years until archaeologists dug them up.Archaeologists have also found seeds which show that the Egyptians grew watermelon and other kinds of melon.1. Travel guide.BAt times Marty made it sound too easy. On a visit to his home I heard him say, “People need to decide to be happy.”I pressed him. “What do you mean by that?” His face took on an skeptical look. “You have to ask me?” At that moment I felt a little foolish. plex human proble ms, at least to me, often prevent people from being happy. To Marty it was a matter of mon sense. I wondered, what was I missing? That night Marty told me a story that was very personal for him. I knew Marty and Mickey had four children. I didn’t know ther e had been a fifth. She was their second child. She died shortly after birth.“The funeral director was a super guy,” Marty said. “He knew we didn’t have anymoney, but he told us he would take care of our little girl. He went out and built a wood casket (小盒) for her.”Marty’s voice started to break. “He only charged us five dollars. It’s stuff like that. You can look for the good in people and you’ll find the good. You can look for the bad in people and you’ll find the bad.”I didn’t know what it was like to grow up poor. Marty’s life was filled with minimum-wage jobs, borrowing on insurance policies, and working overtime to make a little more money. In my lifetime I had seen people in similar circumstances grow angry. Bitterness took hold of their lives and choked them.“I never had much money, and I don’t think I ever will.” Marty said. “People think they need to have a lot of things to make them happy. They ought to look around and see what’s really important.” When Marty looked around, he saw the most beautiful girl in the world as his wife, four children who loved him, a home he took pride in, and a job that made him feel alive. He was happy because, in his mind, he had it all.5. The underlined word “skeptical” in the text can be replaced by “_____”.A. embarrassedB. curiousC. disappointedD. doubtful6. What does the author learn from Marty?A. Everyone needs to live a hard life.B. Everyone can choose to be happy.C. Never let others affect your mood.D. plex problems can bee simple.8. What would be the best title for the text?A. The source of happinessB. The pleasure of lifeC. The importance of familyD. The meaning of kindnessCWe probably all know people, either at work or in our personal lives, who are really good listeners. No matter what kind of situat ion we’re in, they always seem to know just what to say and how to say it so that we’re not offended or upset. We probably also know people who are masters at managing their emotions. They don’t get angry in stressful situations. Instead, they have the ability to calmly look at a problem and find a solution. They take criticism well, and they know when to use it to improve their performance.People like this have a high degree of emotional intelligence, or EI. They know themselves very well, and they’re als o able to sense the emotional needs of others. As more and more people accept that emotional intelligence is just as important to professional success as technical ability, panies are increasingly using EI when they hire and promote someone. For example, one large cosmetics pany recently revised their hiring process for salespeople to choose candidates based on emotional intelligence. Theresult? Salespeople hired with the new system have sold, on average, $91,000 more than salespeople selected under the old system.Emotional intelligence is the ability to recognize your emotions, understand what they are telling you, and realize how your emotions affect people around you. Emotional intelligence also involves your perception of others: when you understand how they feel, this allows you to manage relationships more effectively.People with high emotional intelligence are usually successful in most things they do. Why? Because they’re the ones that others want on their team. When people with high EI send an email, it gets answered. When they need help, they get it. Because they make others feel good, they go through life much more easily than people who are easily angered or upset. The good news is that emotional intelligence can be taught and developed. Many books and tests are available to help you determine your current EI, and identify where you may need to do some work.9. According to the passage, we’re all probably impressed by people who _____.A. are ready to help othersB. are very successful in their livesC. have high emotional intelligenceD. know how to control their temper10. By mentioning the cosmetics pany, the author tries to _____.A. stress the importance of emotional intelligenceB. speak highly of its new salespeopleC. show its effective hiring systemD. explain what improvements it has made11. The underlined word “they” in the fourth paragraph refers to “_____”.A. your emotionsB. people around youC. effective relationshipsD. your opinions of others12. What’s most likely to b e discussed in the paragraph that follows?A. What emotional intelligence is.B. How emotional intelligence can be improved.C. Many books on emotional intelligence.D. More people with high emotional intelligence.DLife will probably be very different in 2050. First of all, it seems that TV channels will have disappeared by 2050. Instead, people will choose a programme from a “menu” and a puter will send the programme directly to the television. Today, we can use the World Wide Web to read newspaper stories and see pictures on a puter thousands of kilometers away. By 2050, music, films, programmes, newspapers and books will e to us in this way.In many places, agriculture is developing quickly and people are growing fruit and vegetables for export. This uses a lot of water. Therefore, there could be serious shortages. Some futurologists predict that water could be the cause of war if we don’t act now.In future, cars will run on new, clean fuels and they will go very fast. Cars willhave puter s to control the speed of them and there won’t be any accidents. Today, many cars have puters that tell drivers exactly where they are. By 2050, the puter will control the car and drive it to your destination. Also, by 2050, space planes will fly people from Los Angels to Tokyo in just two hours. Some big panies now prefer to use robots that do not ask for pay rises or go on strike, and work 24 hours a day. By 2050, we will see robots everywhere — in factories, schools, offices, hospitals, shops and homes.By 2050, we will be able to help blind and deaf people see again and hear again. Nowadays, scientists have discovered how to control genes and have already produced clones of animals. By 2050, scientists will be able to produce clones of people and decide how they look, how they behave and how much intelligence they have. Scientists will be able to do these things, but should they?13. By 2050, people will get information mainly by ________.A. watching TVB. reading newspapersC. listening to the radioD. turning to a website14. What will play the biggest part in the quality of future life?A. Medicine.B. Technology.C. Education.D. Agriculture.15. Which of the following subjects is NOT mentioned in the passage?A. 2021年高二英语上学期10月月考第一节 (共15小题,每题3分,满分45分)阅读下列短文,从所给答案中选出最佳选项。

ABy today's standards, my mobile phone is pretty rubbish. It's a Nokia 1616. If that doesn't mean much to you (it's not the kind of phone you see advertised on television), all you need to know is that it's a small, not very heavy device with which you can send and receive telephone calls and text messages. It also has a very handy torch on the top for when you can't find your keys, or when you drop something on the floor in the cinema. Other than that, my phone doesn't do much. Well, it has an alarm, and it probably has a calculator and things like that, but it's nothing pared to a smartphone. Why would I want one of those?I have often been told that the big advantage of having a smartphone is that "you can do everything with them!" But when was the last time you saw someone doing "everything" with a smartphone? Okay, so they may have an endless list of functions, but generally they are used for checking social networking sites, playing games, and receiving and replying to emails. I'm happy just doing all of those things at home on my laptop. As far as I can tell, the best thing about having a smartphone is that you can be connected to the Internet all the time. Don't get me wrong, I love the internet, but I just don't see the point of constantly being online. I can't remember the last time I received a Facebook update which was so very urgent that I had to read it as soon as it appeared, and I can't imagine ever having a job which was so important that I would need to read work-related emails immediately. I would think that if someone needed me urgently, they would just ring me rather than send an email. And my trusty Nokia can manage that. One of the most peculiar effects of the smartphone is, in my opinion, the newly-found addiction to maps and navigation (导航) systems. Is there anything more boring than knowing exactly where you are all of the time?! How do you get to know an area if you don't get lost there a few times? And if you are dependent on online maps, what happens to those great places you find just by chance? You can't exactly find out from Google maps the journey from "here" to" that hidden cafe with the tasty-looking cakes" , or to "that pond next to the church which looks really pretty in the evening sun. " It is, of course, true that we all occasionally need to be pointed in the right direction, but I find that there are often real life humans you can ask. There are many benefits of having a very basic mobile phone, like the fact that it cost me about twenty pounds, and that I don't have to worry too much about it being stolen .But the main benefit has to be the fact that it provides me with the word 'gr eatest excuse for my bad habits’. Whether it's turning up late to events ,or gettinglost on a trip, or missing buses or trains ,or forgetting about an appointment at work ,I'm pretty sure I'm covered with the following explanation: “I’m really sorry,I don't have a smartphone."1. The writer uses his Nokia 1616 mainly to _______.A. play online gamesB. do calculating workC. check social network sitesD. make calls and text messages2. It can be inferred from the above passage that_______.A. work-related emails should be answered immediatelyB. a laptop and a smartphone share many functionsC. smartphones should always be connected to the netD. a Facebook update is usually very important3. According to the passage, if you use navigation systems, you may _____A. miss some really wonderful placesB. find a boring tripactually excitingC. be pe rsuaded to eat in a certain caféD. be misled to a totallywrong place4. The writer’s purpose for writing this article is to______A. explain why he doesn’t want a smartphoneB. warn readers of the risks of using smartphonesC. plain about the troubles caused by smartphonesD. infoem readers of the latest development of mobile phonesBSome say college is wasted on the young. So many of us look back at our own college years and realize what we could have done differently to make the most of them. While we can’t go back, we certainly can offer our sons and daughters our best advice to help them make the right choices in college. Hopefully, they will have fewer regrets than we do. Following are five guidelines parents can share with their college-bound kids to put the whole experience in perspective.EDUCATION IS YOUR FIRST PRIORITYAs soon as you arrive on campus, there will be peting interests. Feel free to check them out but always remember that you are there first and foremost for your education. Go to class prepared and on time. Be engaged during class. Make sure your professor knows you and realizes that you care.BE RESPONSIBLEThere are many layers of responsibility. Do what you say you will do and, if you can’t, confess it early and municate clearly. But being responsible isn’t just about meeting your mitments; it is also about taking care of you, your body, and your friends. For example, more than 1800 college students die annually from alcohol-relatedinjuries. Look out for yourself and other people. Make moderate, sensible decisions so you aren’t reeling from(受…影响) the consequences later.TAKE THE OPPORTUNITYIncredible opportunities will present themselves: studying abroad, interning at a unique place, trying new things. Don’t let fear prevent you from taking advantage of them. There may never be so much time or as many resources devoted to your betterment again in your life. Say yes to opportunities that will help you grow.FIND AND BE A MENTORSome of the best lessons available to us can e outside of the classroom in the form of a mentor(良师益友). One of the most powerful growth opportunities is being a mentor. Early on, find someone on campus who you feel can help you grow and develop a relationship with him or her. Also find someone for you to mentor. You will reinforce and enrich your own learning experience by teaching someone else.GET THE JOB DONEIt is natural to occasionally feel you want to quit, when it makes more sense to you to go find a full-time job. Resist that urge. As Jocelyn Negron-Rios, a mother of two, who is currently pleting her degree, advises, “No matter how difficult it seems, keep at it because however insurmountable(不可克服的) it feels now multiply that by 10,000 and that is how it feels when you are in your thirties with a full-timejob and a family and are trying to pursue a degree.”5. According to the passage, the most important thing for college students is ______.A. taking part in different activitiesB. working hard to get a degreeC. seizing every chance to try new thingsD. improving themselves by learning from the others6.Which of the following about college life is true?A. Passing on what you’ve learned in college can help you enrich your learningexperience.B. Make sure that you are responsible for yourself rather than others.C. Professors will not assess your performances in class but the grades you getin exams.D. You can make full use of the opportunity whenever you want.7.What can we infer from the words said by Jocelyn in the last paragraph?A. Persistence is the key to success when you meet with difficulties in your learningprocess.B. It is better if you gain more working experience before you finish your education.C. As long as you work hard, you can gain a degree even when you are in your thirties.D. Youth is the best time to learn since you have less burden.8.What is the main purpose of the passage?A. To give some rules for the college students.B. To call on the students to make full use of college years.C. To summarize some tips for parents to share with their children.D. To analyze the benefits and difficulties of college life.CWith the popularity of Harry Potter novels, the number of children applying to boarding schools has risen, many of them hoping to find their own version of Hogwarts. However, others have interpreted this trend as a reaction to longer working hours and the break up of more marriages. The boarding schools of fiction are presented as one long midnight feast with pillow fights making firm friendships. However, some people say the reality is children having more homesickness and a lack of individual attention. Modern boarding schools have done much to get rid of the image of the mass dormitories with 40 or more beds in one room, some going as far as providing private rooms with bathrooms. Similarly, they make great announcements for their academic advantage, particularly in view of the increase in exams, homework and university entrance requirements facing children wishing to succeed in the modern world.Alongside these more conventional schools, two types of boarding schools have also bee more popular recently. Sports academies and stage schools seek to cater for children with particular interests and talents, while so-called troubled-teens havebeen able to turn to a range of religious or wilderness schools to solve their problematic behavior.Boarding schools allow children a safe space in which to acplish greater control and independence over their daily lives. Teachers and staff can look after and support but they are unlikely to be over-protective. This can be a great preparation for university or for working away from home in later life as it provides an intermediate step between childhood and full independence. However, Parents are a child’s most natural support and best role models to learn from. If they are separated from them for long periods of time, this may damage their relationship and leave the child feeling anxious or alone. Schools are unlikely to be able to copy the detailed knowledge of each individual child that a parent has and therefore cannot be as effective in supporting the child. To sum up, boarding schools have both their advantages and disadvantages, so it is up to you to decide whether to send your children to boarding schools or not.9. What do we know from the passage?A. More and more children go and visit Hogwarts on their own.B. Pillow fights in boarding schools make firm friendships in reality.C. More children want to go to boarding schools because of Harry Potter novels.D. There aren’t special schools for the particularly talented children.10. What kind of schools may be the most suitable for the so-called troubled-teens?A. sports academiesB. Wilderness schoolsC. Conventional schoolsD. Stage schools11. We learn from Paragraph 4 that __________.A. teachers of boarding schools are the best examples for children to learn fromB. children can be more independent if they are separated from their parentsC. parents know their children better than teachers of boarding schoolsD. schools are much more effective than parents in supporting children12. What is the author’s opinion of boarding schools?A. NeutralB. NegativeC. PositiveD. CriticalDIt was a winter morning, just a couple of weeks before Christmas xx. While most people were warming up their cars, Trevor, my husband, had to get up early to ride his bike four kilometers away from home to work. On arrival, he parked his bike outside the back door as he usually does. After putting in 10 hours of labor, he returned to find his bike gone. The bike, a black Kona 18 speed, was our only transport. Trevor used it to get to work, putting in 60-hour weeks to support his young family. And the bike was also used to get groceries(食品杂货),saving us from having to walk long distances from wherewe live.I was so sad that someone would steal our bike that I wrote to the newspaper and told them our story. Shortly after that, several people in our area offered to help. One wonderful stranger even bought a bike, then called my husband to pick it up. Once again my husband had a way to get to and from his job. It really is an honor that a plete stranger would go out of their way for someone they have never met before.People say that a smile can be passed from one person to another, but acts of kindness from strangers are even more so. This experience has had a spreading effect in our lives because it strengthened our faith in humanity(人性)as a whole. And it has influenced(影响)us to be more mindful of ways we, too, can share with others. No matter how big or how small, an act of kindness shows that someone cares. And the results can be everlasting.13. Why was the bike so important to the couple?A. They used it for work and daily life.B. It was their only possession.C. It was a nice Kona 18 speed.D. The man’s job was bike racing.14. We can infer from the text that ____________.A. the couple worked 60 hours a week.B. people were busy before ChristmasC. the stranger brought over the bikeD. life was hard for the young family.15. What do the couple learn from their experience?A. Strangers are usually of little help.B. One should take care of their bike.C. News reports make people famous.D. An act of kindness can mean a lot.第二节(共5小题,每题3分,满分15分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

People who are thinking about adopting a dog as a friend for their cats are worried that they will fight. A recent research has found a new recipe of success. According to the study, if the cat is adopted before the dog, and if they are introduced when still young (less than 6 months for cats, a year for dogs), it is highly probable that the two pets will get along swimmingly. Two-thirds of the homes interviewed reported a positive relationship between their cat and dog. However, it wasn’t all sweetness a nd light. There was a reported coldness between the cat and dog in 25% of the homes, while aggression and fighting were observed in 10% of the homes. One reason for this is probably that some of their body signals were just opposite. For example, when a cat turns its head away it signals aggression, while a dog doing the same signals submission. In homes with cats and dogs living peacefully, researchers observed a surprising behavior. They are learning how to talk each other’s language. It is a surprise tha t cats can learn how to talk ‘Dog’, and dogs can learn how to talk ‘Cat’.What’s interesting is that both cats and dogs have appeared to develop their intelligence. They can learn to read each other’s body signals, suggesting that the two may have more in mon than was previously suspected. Once familiar with each other’s presence and body language, cats and dogs can play together, greet each other nose to nose, and enjoy sleeping together on the sofa. They can easily share the same water bowl and in some cases groom (梳理) each other. The significance of this research on cats and dogs may go beyond pets --- to people who don’t get along, including neighbors, colleagues at work, and even world superpowers. If cats and dogs can learn to get along, surely people have a good chance.54. We should learn more body languages.CA year after graduation, I was offered a position teaching a writing class. Teaching was a profession I had never seriously considered, though several of my stories had been published. I accepted the job without hesitation, as it would allow me to wear a tie and go by the name of Mr. Davis. My father went by the same name, and I liked to imagine people getting the two of us confused. “Wait a minute,” someone might say, “Are you talking about Mr. Davis the retired man, or Mr. Davis the respectable scholar?”The position was offered at the last minute, and I was given two weeks to prepare, a period I spent searching for briefcase and standing before my full-length mirror, repeating the words, “Hello, class. I’m Mr. Davis.” Sometimes I would give myself an aggressive voice. Sometimes I would sound experienced. But when the day eventually came, my nerves kicked in and the true Mr. Davis was there. I sounded not like a thoughtful professor, but rather a 12-year-old boy.I arrived in the classroom with paper cards designed in the shape of maple leaves. I had cut them myself out of orange construction paper. I saw nine students along a long table. I handed out the cards, and the students wrote down their names and fastened them to their breast pockets as I required.“All right then,” I said. “Okey, here we go.” Then I opened my briefcase and realized that I had never thought beyond this moment. I had been thinking that the students would be the first to talk, offering their thoughts and opinions on the events of the day. I had imagined that I would sit at the edge of the desk, overlooking a forest of hands. Every student would yell. “Calm down, you’ll all get your turn. One at a time, one at a time!”A terrible silence ruled the room, and seeing no other opinions, I inspected the students to pull out their notebooks and write a brief essay related to the theme of deep disappointment.58. The author took the job to teach writing because ______.A. he wanted to be respectedB. he had written some storiesC. he wanted to please his fatherD. he had dreamed of being a teacher59. What can we learn about the author from Paragraph 2?A. He would be aggressive in his first class.B. He was well-prepared for his first class.C. He got nervous upon the arrival of his first class.D. He waited long for the arrival of his first class.60. Before he started his class, the author asked the students to ______.A. write down their suggestions on the paper cardsB. cut maple leaves out of the construction paperC. cut some cards out of the construction paperD. write down their names on the paper cards61. The author chose the position topic probably because ______.A. he got disappointed with his first classB. he had prepared the topic before classC. he wanted to calm down the studentsD. he thought it was an easy topicDIn a world with limited land, water and other natural resources, the harm from the traditional business model is on the rise. Actually, the past decade has seen more and more forests disappearing and globe being increasingly warm. People now realize that this unhealthy situation must be changed, and that we must be able to develop in sustainable (可持续的) ways. That means growth with low carbon or development of sustainable products. In other words, we should keep the earth healthy while using its supply of natural resources.Today, sustainable development is a popular trend in many countries. According to a recent study, the global market for low-carbon energy will bee three times bigger over the next decade. China, for example, has set its mind on leading that market, hoping to seize chances in the new round of the global energy revolution. It is now trying hard to make full use of wind and solar energy, and is spending a huge amount of money making electric cars and high-speed trains. In addition, we are also seeing great growth in the global markets for sustainable products such as palm oil (棕榈油), which is produced without cutting down valuable rainforest. In recent years the markets for sustainable products have grown by more than 50%.Governments can fully develop the potential of these new markets. First, they can set high targets for reducing carbon emissions(排放) and targets for saving and reusing energy. Besides, stronger arrangement of public resources like forests can also help to speed up the development. Finally, governments can avoid the huge expenses that are taking us in the wrong direction, and redirecting some of those expenses can accelerate the change from traditional model to a sustainable one.The major challenge of this century is to find ways to meet the needs of a growing population within the limits of this single planet. That is no small task, but it offers abundant new chances for sustainable product industries.62. The traditional business model is harmful because of all the following EXCEPT that ______.A. It makes the world warmerB. it consumes natural resourcesC. it brings severe damage to forestsD. it makes growth hard to continue63. What is the main purpose of the passage?A. To introduce a new business model.B. To advocate sustainable development.C. To predict a change of the global market.D. To pare two business models.64. To fully develop the low-carbon markets, government can ______.A. cut public expensesB. forbid carbon emissionsC. develop public resourcesD. encourage energy preservation65. We can learn from the last paragraph that businesses have many chances to ______.A. develop sustainable productsB. explore new natural resourcesC. make full use of natural resourcesD. deal with the major challenge第二卷I.听力理解第三节(每小题仅填写一个词II. 阅读理解第二节Parents and doctors have the same worry over especially low birth weight newborns. ___66___ A trend has therefore developed to make special formulas(配方)of extra nutrients and protein-rich foods for these tiny babies. Unfortunately, a British study has found that this practice could have negative long-term effects, such as high blood pressure in adulthood.Between 1993 and 1995, Atul Singhal of the Institute of Child Health and his colleagues researched 299 full-term newborns, each of whom weighed very little for their age. The babies’ moms had decided not to breastfeed(用母乳喂养).___67___ The rest received a formula with more nutrients than the standard formula. The growth of all of these children was pared to that of 175 similarly low birth weight babies whose mothers had chosen to breastfeed their children for their 9 months. ___68___ They found 83 babies from normal-formula group, 70 babies from extra-formula group, and 95 babies from the breastfed group. ___69___ According to the latest data, children who received the extra formula had significantly higher blood pressure than those in the other two groups.Seven human tests have indeed shown that when infants are overfed before being stopped breastfeeding, they have an increased possibility to bee fat as youngsters. No matter how big a child is at birth, he or she will probably reach the same adult height no matter how quickly the baby grows. Twenty-one years later, I am still a bright-eyed dreamer and one with quite a different tale to tell.My grandma, an amazing woman, graduated from college at the age of 65. She was the first in our family to reach that goal. But one year after I started college, she developed cancer. I made the choice to withdraw from college to care for her. It meant that school and my personal dream would have to wait. Then I got married with another dream: building my family with a bination of adopted and biological children. In xx, we adopted our first son. To lay eyes on him was fantastic -- and very emotional. A year later came oursecond adopted boy. Then followed son No.3. In xx, I gave birth to another boy.You can imagine how fully occupied I became, raising four boys under the age of 8! Our home was a plete zoo -- a joyous zoo. Not surprising, I never did make it back to college full-time. But I never gave up on the dream either. I had only one choice: to find a way. That meant taking as few as one class each semester. The hardest part was feeling guilty about the time I spent away from the boys. They often wanted me to stay home with them. There certainly were times I wanted to quit, but I knew I should set an example for them to follow through the rest of their lives. In xx, I graduated from the University of North Carolina. It took me over 21 years to get my college degree!I am not special, just single-minded. It always strikes me that when you're looking at a big challenge from the outside it looks huge, but when you're in the midst of it, it just seems normal. Everything you want won't arrive in your life on one day. It's a process. Remember: little steps add up to big dreams.56. When the author went to Howard University, her dream was to be ________.A. a writerB. a teacherC. a judgeD. a doctor57. Why did the author quit school in her second year of college?A. She wanted to study by herself.B. She fell in love and got married.C. She suffered from a serious illness.D. She decided to look after her grandma.58. What can we learn about the author from Paragraphs 4 and 5?A. She was busy yet happy with her family life.B. She ignored her guilty feeling for her sons.C. She wanted to remain a full-time housewife.D. She was too confused to make a correct choice.59. What does the author mostly want to tell us in the last paragraph?A. Failure is the mother of success.B. Little by little, one goes far.C. Every coin has two sides.D. Well begun, half done.BDo you find getting up in the morning so difficult that it’s painful? This might be called laziness, but Dr. Kleitman has a new explanation. He has proved that everyone has a daily energy cycle.During the hours when you labor through your work you may say that you’r e “hot”. That’s true. The time of day when you feel the most energetic is when your cycle of body temperature is at its peak. For some people the peak es during the forenoon. For others it es in the afternoon or evening. No one has discovered why this is so, but it leads to such familiar monologues (自言自语) as John talksto himself: “Get up, John! You’ll be late for work again!” The possible explanation for the trouble is that John is at his temperature-and-energy peak in the evening. Much family quarrelling ends when husbands and wives realize what these energy cycles mean, and which cycle each member of the family has.You can’t change your energy cycle, but you can learn to make your life fit it better. Habit can help, Dr. Kleitman believes. Maybe you’re sl eepy in the evening but feel you must stay up late anyway. Adjust your cycle to some extent by staying up later than you want to. If your energy is low in the morning but you have an important job to do early in the day, rise before your usual hour. This w on’t change your cycle, but you’ll get up steam (打起精神) and work better at your low point.Begin with a slow start which saves your energy. Get up with a slow yawn and stretch. Sit on the edge of the bed a minute before putting your feet on the floor. Avoid the troublesome search for clean clothes by laying them out the night before. Whenever possible, do usual work in the afternoon and spend time doing important work for your high peak hours.60. According to Dr. Kleitman if you don’t want to get up in the morning ____________.A. you must be a lazy personB. you must catch a coldC. your energy cycle must be lowD. you should stay in bed61. Which of the following may lead to family quarrels according to the passage?A. A change in a family memb er’s energy cycle.B. Familiar monologues.C. Unawareness of energy cycles.D. Attempts to control the energy cycle of other family members.62. If one wants to work better at his low point in the morning, he should ____________.A. change his energy cycleB. go to bed earlierC. overe his lazinessD. get up earlier than usual63. You are advised to rise with a yawn and stretch because it will _________________.A. help you to control your temper early in the dayB. help to keep your en ergy for the day’s workC. enable you to concentrate on your routine workD. keep your energy cycle under control all dayCAny discussion of English conversation, like any English conversation, must begin with〝 The Weather〞. And in this spirit of observing traditional rule, I shall quote Dr Johnson’ s famous ment that “When two English meet, their first talk is of the weather”, and point out that this observation is as accurate now as it was over two hundred years ago. This, however, is the point at which most people either stop, or try, and fail, to e up with a convincing explanation for the English “ addiction ” to the weather. They fail because their premise (前提) is mistaken: they assume that our conversations about the weather are conversations about the weather. In other words, they assume that we talk about the weather because we have a keen interest in the subject. Most of them then try to figure out what it is about the English weather that is so fascinating.Bill Bryson, for example, concludes that the English weather is not at all fascinating, and that our “addiction” to it is therefore very difficult to explain : “To an outsider, the most striking thing about the English weather is that there is not very much of it. A1l those phenomena that elsewhere give nature an edge of excitement, unpredictability and danger—tornados, monsoons, hailstorms—are almost wholly unknown in the British Isles.”Jeremy Paxman takes offence at Bryson’ s ments and argues that the English weather is truly fascinating:Bryson misses the point . The interest is less in the phenornena themselves , but in uncertainty. . . one of the few things you can say about England with absolute certainty is that it has a lot of weather. It may not include tropical cyclones but life at the edge of an ocean and the edge of a continent means you can never be entirely sure what you’ re going to get.My research has convinced me that both Bryson and Paxman are missing the point, which is that our conversations about the weather are not really about the weather at all: English weather – speak is a form of code, developed to help us overe our natural reserve (含蓄) and actually talk to each other. Everyone knows, for example, that “Nice day, isn’t it?”,“Ooh, isn’t it cold?”; and other variations on the theme are not requests for weather data: they are greetings or conversation -starters. In other words, English weather – speak is a form of “cleaning talk” —— the human equivalent of what is known as “social cleaning” among our primate(灵长类的)cousins, where they spend hours cleaning each other’s fur, even when they are perfectly clean, as a means of social connection.64. As is stated in the passage, most people try to find out .A. why the English weather is so uniqueB. whether the English enjoy their weatherC. why the English are so interested in the topic of weatherD. whether the English really talk about weather when they do so65. Disapproving of Bill Bryson’ s opinion, Jeremy Paxman arguesthat .A. the English talk about their weather because it is unpredictableB. the English don’ t talk about weather as often as the outsiders thinkC. the English weather can be as exciting as anywhere else’sD. the English weather talk is merely a form of small talk66. According to the author, English weather – speak is similar toprimates’ social cleaning in that they are both .A. ways of greetingB. means social connectionC.fascinating topics between peopleD. phenomena difficult to understand to outsidersDAbout ten men in every hundred suffer from color blindness in some way. Women are luckier; only about one in two hundred is affected in this matter. Perhaps, after all, it is safer to be driven by a woman! There are different forms of color blindness. In some cases a man may not be able to see deep red. He may think that red, orange and yellow are all shadows of green. Sometimes a person cannot tell the difference between blue and green. In rare cases an unlucky man may see everything in shades of green - a strange world indeed.Color blindness in human beings is a strange thing to explain. In a single eye there are millions of very small things called “cones”. These help us to see in a bright light and to tell difference between colors. There are also millions of “rods”, but these are used for seeing when it is near dark. They show us shape but no color. Some insects have favorite colors. Mosquitoes prefer blue to yellow. A red light will not attract insects, but a blue lamp will. In a similar way human beings also have favorite colors. Yet we are lucky. With the aid of the cones in our eyes we can see many beautiful colors by day, and with the aid of the rods we can see shapes at night. One day we may even learn more about the invisible colors around us.67. According to the passage, with the help of the “cones”, we can____________.A. tell different shapesB. see in a weak lightC. kill mosquitoesD. tell orange from yellow68. Why do some people say it is safer to be driven by women?A. Women are more careful.B. There are fewer color-blind womenC. Women are fonder of driving than men.D. Women are weaker but quicker in thinking.69. Which of the statements about the color- blind is true?A. Not all of them have the same problem in recognizing color.B. None of them can see deep red.C. None of them can tell the difference between blue and green.D. All of them see everything in shades of green.70. We can attract and kill mosquitoes by using a _____________.A. red lightB. yellow lightC. blue lightD. green lightERome had the Forum (论坛). London has Speaker’s Corner. Now always-on-the-go New Yorkers have Liz and Bill.Liz and Bill, two college graduates in their early 20s, have spent a whole year trying to have thousands of people talk to them in subway stations and on busy street corners. They don’t push religion (宗教). So what’s the point?“ To see what happens,” said Liz. “ We simply enjoy life with open talk.” Shortly after the September 11, xx attacks, they decided to walk from New York City to Washington, a 270-mile trip. They found they loved talking to people along the way and wanted to continue talking with strangers after their return.“ It started as a crazy idea.” Liz said. “ We were so curious about all the strangers walking by with their life stories. People will talk to us about anything: their job, their clothes, their childhood experiences, anything.” Denise wanted to talk about an exam she was about to take. She had stopped by for the second time in two days, to let the two listeners know how it went.Marcia had led her husband to a serious disease. “That was very heavy on my mind.” Marcia said. “ To be able to talk about it to total strangers wasvery good,” she explained. To celebrate a year of talking, the two held a get-together in a city park for all the people they had met over the past year. A few hundred people appeared, as well as some television cameramen and reporters. They may plan more parties or try to attract more people to join their informal talks. Some publishers have expressed interest in a book, something the two say they’ll consider before making a decision.71. What did Liz and Bill determine to do after the attack on September 11, xx?A.
