AThere are two factors(因素)which determine an individual's intelligence. The first is the sort of brain he is born with. Human brains differ considerably, some being more capable than others. But no matter how good a brain he has to begin with, an individual will have a low order of intelligence unless he has opportunities to learn. So the second factor is what happens to the individual-the sort of environment in which he is brought up. If an individual has less chances environmentally, it is likely that his brain will fail to develop and he will never obtain the level of intelligence of which he is capable. The importance of environment in determining an individual's intelligence can be shown by the case history of the twins. When they were three months old, their parents died, and they were placed in separate homes. Peter was brought up by parents of low intelligence in a separate community with poor educational opportunities. Mark was brought up in the home of well-to-do opportunity to be encouraged intellectually. This environmental difference continued until the twins were in their late teens, when they were given tests to measure their intelligence. Mark's IQ was 125, twenty-five points higher than the average and fully forty points higher than his twin brother. Given equal opportunities, the twins, having similar brains, would have tested at roughly the same level.1. This passage can best be titled______.A. Measuring Your IntelligenceB. Intelligence and EnvironmentC. The Case of Peter and MarkD. How the Brain Influences Intelligence2.The best statement of the main idea of this passage is that______.A. human brains differ considerablyB. the brain a person is born with is important in determining his intelligenceC. environment is important in determining a person's intelligenceD. persons having similar brains will have roughly the same intelligence3.According to the passage, the average IQ is______.A. 85B. 100C. 110D. 1254. This passage suggests that an individual's IQ______.A. can be foretold at birthB. stays the same throughout his lifeC. can be increased by educationD. is determined by his childhoodBShort and shy, Ben Saunders was the last kid in his class picked for any sports team. “Football, tennis, cricket—anything with a round ball, I was useless,” he says now with a laugh. But back then he was the object of jokes in school gym classes in England's rural Devonshire. It was a mountain bike he received for his 15th birthday that changed him. At first the teen went biking alone in a nearby forest. Then he began to cycle along with a runner friend. Gradually, Saunders set his mind building up his body, increasing his speed, strength and endurance. At age 18, he ran his first marathon. The following year, he met John Ridgway, who became famous in the 1960s for rowing an open boat across the Atlantic Ocean. Saunders was hired as an instructor at Ridgway's school of Adventure in Scotland, where he learned about the older man's cold-water exploits(成就). Intrigued, Saunders read all he could about Arctic explorers and North Pole expeditions, then decided that this would be his future. Journeys to the Pole aren't the usual holidays for British country boys, and many people dismissed his dream as fantasy. “John Ridgway was one of the few who didn't say, 'You are completely crazy,'” Saunders says.In 2001, after becoming a skilled skier, Saunders started his first long-distance expedition toward the North Pole. He suffered frostbite, had a closer encounter with a polar bear and pushed his body to the limit.Saunders has since become the youngest person to ski alone to the North Pole, and he's skied more of the Arctic by himself than any other Briton. His old playmates would not believe the transformation. This October, Saunders, 27, heads south to explore from the coast of Antarctica to the South Pole and back, an 1800-mile journey that has never been completed on skis.5. The turning point in Saunders' life came when _____A. he started to play ball gamesB. he got a mountain bike at age 15C. he ran his first marathon at age 18D. he started to receive Ridgway's training6. We can learn from the text that Ridgway _______.A. dismissed Saunders' dream as fantasyB. built up his body together with SaundersC. hired Saunders for his cold-water experienceD. won his fame for his voyage across the Atlantic7. What do we know about Saunders?A. He once worked at a school in Scotland.B. He followed Ridgway to explore the North Pole.C. He was chosen for the school sports team as a kid.D. He was the first Briton to ski alone to the North Pole.8. The underlined word “Intrigued” in the third paragraph probably means_____.A. ExcitedB. ConvincedC. DelightedD. FascinatedCToo much TV-watching can harm children's ability to learn and even reduce their chances of getting a college degree, new studies suggest in the latest effort to examine the effects of television on children. One of the studies looked at nearly 400 northern California third-graders. Those with TVs in their bedrooms scored about eight points lower on math and language arts tests than children without bedroom TVs.A second study, looking at nearly 1,000 grown-ups in New Zealand, found lower education levels among 26-year-olds who had watched lots of TV during childhood. But the results don't prove that TV is the cause and don't rule out that already poorly motivated youngsters (年轻人) may watch lots of TV.Their study measured the TV habits of 26-year-olds between ages 5 and 15. Those with college degrees had watched an average of less than two hours of TV per weeknight during childhood, compared with an average of more than 2.5 hours for those who had no education beyond high school. In the California study, children with TVs in their rooms but no computer at home scored the lowest, while those with no bedroom TV but who had home computers scored the highest. While this study does not prove that bedroom TV sets caused the lower scores, it adds to accumulating findings that children shouldn't have TVs in their bedrooms.9. According to the California study, the low-scoring group might____.A. have watched a lot of TVB. not be interested in mathC. be unable to go to collegeD. have had computers in their bedrooms10. What can we learn from the last two paragraphs?A. More time should be spent on computers.B. Children should be forbidden from watching TV.C. TV sets shouldn't be allowed in children's bedrooms.D. Further studies on high-achieving students should be done.11. What would be the best title for this text?A. Computers or TelevisionB. Effects of Television on ChildrenC. Studies on TV and College EducationD. Television and Children's Learning HabitsDThat cold January night, I was growing sick of my life in San Francisco. There I was, walking home at one in the morning after a tiring practice at the theatre. With opening night only a week away, I was still learning my lines. I was having trouble dealing with my part-time job at the bank and my acting at night at the same time. As I walked, I thought seriously about giving up both acting and San Francisco. City life had become too much for me.As I walked down empty streets under tall buildings, I felt very small and cold.I began running, both to keep warm and to keep away from any possible robbers. Very few people were still out except a few sad-looking homeless people under blankets. About a block from my apartment, I heard a sound behind me. I turned quickly, half expecting to see someone with a knife or a gun. The street was empty. All I saw was a shining streetlight. Still, the noise had made me nervous, so I started to run faster. Not until I reached my apartment building and unlocked the door did I realize what the noise had been. It had been my wallet falling to the sidewalk. Suddenly I wasn't cold or tired anymore. I ran out of the door and back to where I'd heard the noise. Although I searched the sidewalk anxiously for fifteen minutes, my wallet was nowhere to be found.Just as I was about to give up the search, I heard the garbage truck pull up to the sidewalk next to me. When a v oice called from the inside,“Alisa Camacho?”, I thought I was dreaming. How could this man know my name? The door opened, and out jumped a small red-haired man with an amused look in his eyes.“Is this what you're looking for?”he asked, holding up a small s quare shape. It was nearly 3 a.m. by the time I got into bed. I wouldn't get much sleep that night, but I had gotten my wallet back. I also had gotten back some enjoyment of city life. I realized that the city couldn't be a bad place as long as people were willing to help each other.12. How did the writer feel when she was walking home after work?A. Cold and sick.B. Fortunate and helpful.C. Satisfied and cheerful.D. Disappointed and helpless.13. From the first paragraph, we lean that the writer was busy ______.A. solving her problem at the bankB. taking part in various city activitiesC. learning acting in an evening schoolD. preparing for the first night show14. On her way home the writer______.A. lost her wallet unknowinglyB. was stopped by a garbage truck driverC. was robbed of her wallet by an armed manD. found some homeless people following her15. From the text, we can infer that the writer______.A. would stop working at nightB. would stay on in San FranciscoC. would make friends with cleanersD. would give up her job at the bank第二节 (共5小题,每小题3分,满分15分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

This island has been home to many birds and seals. You may think this island is a paradise. In fact, the island is not famous for the seals or birds. However, - 4 -the real stars are the great white sharks that leap out of the water to catch the seals they are hunting. You may think that there is no way for a 15-foot long, 3000-pound shark to hurlits body out of the water and catch a seal in midair. Actually, these sharks are called “Air Jaws”.Over the years, the seals have gotten smarter. Now, they go out in groups of seven and eight to feed. They swim down on the sea floor, which gives them extra cover. When they have to swim near the surface of water, they swim in a zigzag pattern(Z字形). But with all these tricks, they can still be cleverly beaten by the sharks. Usually, the sharks will take one seal away from its group and force it to swim on the surface, where it is easy to hunt. Sometimes, the seal is fortunate and gets away, but most of them die in the process of trying to survive.Every year, tourists go to see these amazing animals leap out of the water, sometimes flinging their whole bodies into the air when they want to catch the seals. When Nao is sad, he lowers his head and looks down. When he's happy, he raises his arms for a hug. Nothing is out of the ordinary, except that Nao is a robot. “We're modeling the first years of life,” says Lola Canamero, a computerscientist at the University of Hertforshire. “The feelings are shown through physical gestures and body movements rather than facial or verbal(言语的) expressions.”In the future, says the scientist, robots are likely to act as companions, provide support for old people, and help people shop online. In such uses, the display of feeling will be important in making the interactions(交往) more natural and comfortable.Nao has been programmed to copy the emotional skills of a one-year-old child. It can memorize faces, and knows the basic rules of good and bad. Based on these it can decide how to react to what is going on. The actions going with each feeling are pre-programmed, but Nao decides for itself when to display them.Nao is also programmed to have different personalities. A more independent robotis less likely to call for help when exploring a room, while a more fearful robot will show distress if it finds something in the room that may be harmful.Canamero's team will take its emotional programming forward into medical applications. Part of the project will look at ways to use robots in hospitals to support the roles of doctors, nurses and parents. Children might find that a small, friendly-looking robot that can understand their emotional states makes them less anxious. “We want to explore different roles—the robots will help the children to understand their treatment and explain what they have to do.
