BEC商务英语初级阅读试题及答案分享1Trouble with TeamworkMary Owen examines the role and efficiency of teamsRecruiters say that candidates who can give examples ofwork they have done as members of a successful team are in asstrong a position as those who can point to significant individualachievement. Indeed, too much of the latter may suggest thatthe person concerned is not a 'team player' - one of the moreserious failings in the book of management. The importance of being a team player is a side effect of the increasing interaction acrossdepartments and functional divides. Instead of pushing reports, paperwork and decisions aroundthe organisation, 'teams provide a dynamic meeting place where ideas can be shared and expertisemore carefully targeted at important business issues,' says Steve Gardner, in his book KeyManagement Concepts. He adds, 'Globalisation has added a further dimension to teamwork.Multinational teams now study policy decisions in the light of their impact on the local market.' But is teamworking being overdone? 'Some managers are on as many as seven or eightdifferent teams', says Dr Cathy Bandy,a psychologist who recently ran a conference on thesubject. 'They take up so much time that managers can't get on with core tasks.' Forming teamsand having meetings has, she says, become an end in itself, almost regardless of purpose. There isalso the danger of an unhealthy desire to keep the team going after the work has been done. 'People feel the need to belong, and team membership can provide a kind of psychologicalsupport.' The idea behind teamworking is that, when the right group of people is brought together, a'force' develops which is greater than the sum of their individual talents. This is often true in sport, where good players can reach unexpected heights as members of an international team. However, few business situations have as clear a set of objectives, or as clear criteria of success orfailure, as winning a match.'In business, everyone needs to be clear about what the challenge is and whether a team isthe right way of approaching it', says Steve Gardner. 'Unfortunately, people focus instead on whothe members of the team should be and what roles they are to play' Dr Bandy agrees. 'There isalways a danger that teams can turn into committees,' she says. 'In a lot of situations, one or twoindividuals would be much more effective.'So what makes a successful team? There are some general qualities that have been identified.Steve Gardnerrecommends that in every team there should be someone who is good atresearching ideas and another who is good at shooting down impractical ones. There should bethose who can resolve the tensions that naturally occur in a team and others who are focused ongetting the job done. Also, providing a clear and achievable target at the outset is the best way ofensuring that the team will move on to greater things.13 What point does the writer make about teamworking at the beginning of the article?A It is the most successful form of management.B It has changed the recruitment procedure in companies.C Well-run teams still allow individuals to demonstrate their talents.D Being a team player is now considered an essential management skill.14 According to the article, teamwork developed within companies as a response toA modern office design.B changing work practices.C a reduction in administrative tasks.D the expansion of international business.15 In the third paragraph, Dr Bandy suggests thatA many employees do not enjoy working in teams.B some managers are not very effective team leaders.C some teams are created unnecessarily.D few teams are well organised.16 According to the writer, teamwork is more effective in the field of sport because the playersA know what they want to achieve.B are more competitive by nature.C have more individual talent.D can be driven by national pride.17 Steve Gardner and Dr Bandy agree that when a business team is created people do notpay enough attention toA the structure of the team.B alternatives to the team.C selecting the team members.D directing the team's activities.18 What is Steve Gardner's advice on operating a successful team?A Maintain a flexible approach to membership.B Allow personalities to develop within the team.C Select people who fit naturally into certain roles.D Make every effort to avoid conflict between members.参考答案及解析《Trouble with Teamwork》,团队合作的麻烦。

商务英语BEC初级考试的模拟试题原文及答案商务英语BEC初级考试的模拟试题原文及答案Read the text taken from an article about the development of international managersChoose the best sentence from the opposite page to fill each of the gaps .For each gap 9– 14, mark one letter (A-H) on your Answer Sheet .Do not use any letter more than once .There is an example at the beginning .(0)Search for the “ worldly –wise” company executivesThe quest for international managers is underway in virtually every industrialized economy , the search has been made urgent by the globalization of world markets and the growth in crossborder mergers and acquisitions. (0) Many firms report being so stretched that they simply do not have enough of the high-quality people they require to lead their their global expansion.Other companies are having difficulties releasing experienced people from existing operations in order to lead new international ventures. There are indications that a shorftage of internationally skilled people may be an important constraint on firms’ international ambitions. (9) However, identifying the need for international managers is easier than developing them.So what makes an international manager? Paul Evans, a professor at INSEAD, the European business school, does not believe that any particular nationality produces a more international manager. Now it is the Western rule to begin at the head of the horse, that is why I was surprised. It struck me that it could not really make any difference whether the artist begins at the head or the tail or the belly(肚子) or the foot of the horse, if he really knows his business. And most great artists who really know their business do not follow other people’s rule. They make their own rules. Every one of them does his work in a way peculiar(奇特的) to himself; and the peculiarity means only that he finds it more easy to workin that way.Now the very same thing is true to literature(文学). And the question, "How shall I begin?" only means that you want to begin at the head instead of beginning at the tail or somewhere else. That is, you are not yet experienced(有的) enough to trust to your own powers. When you bee more experienced you willnever ask the question, and I think that you will often begin at the tail --that is to say, you will write the end of the story before you have even thought of the beginning.1. BEC初级阅读试题及参考答案1 You can negotiate virtually anything. Projects, resources, expectations and deadlines are all outcomes ofnegotiation. Some people negotiate deals for a living. Dr HerbCohen is one of these professional talkers, called in bycompanies to negotiate on their??behalf . He approaches the artof negotiation as a game because, as he is usually negotiatingfor somebody else, he says this helps him drain the emotionalcontent from his conversation. He is working in a competitive field and needs to avoid being tooadversarial. Whether he succeeds or not, it is important to him to make a good impression so thatpeople will recommend him. The starting point for any deal, he believes, is to identify exactly what you want from eachother. More often than not, one party will be trying to persuade the other round to their point ofview. Negotiation requires two people at the end saying ‘yes”. This can be a problem because oneof them usually begins by saying “no”. However, although this can make talks more difficult, this isoften just a starting point in the negotiation game. Top management may well reject the ideainitially because it is the safer option but they would not be there if they were not interested. It is a misconception that skilled negotiators are smooth operators in smart suits. Dr Cohensays that one of his strategies is to dress down so that the other side can relate to you. Pitch yourlook to suit your customer. You do not need to make them feel better than you but, For example, dressing in a style that is not overtly expensive or successful will make you more approachable.People will generally feel more comfortable with somebody who appears to be like them rather thansuperior to them. They may not like you but they will feel they can trust you. Dr Cohen suggests that the best way to sell your proposal is by getting into the world of theother side. Ask questions rather than give answers and take an interest in what the other person issaying, even if you think what they are saying is silly. You do not need to become their best friendsbut being too clever will alienate them. A lot of deals are made on impressions. Do not rush whatyou are saying---put a few hesitations in , do not try to blind them with your verbal dexterity. Also, you should repeat back to them what they have said to show you take them seriously. Inevitably some deals will not succeed. Generally the longer the negotiations go on, the betterchance they have because people do not want to think their investment and energies have goneto waste. However , joint venture can mean joint risk and sometimes , if this becomes too great ,neither party may be prepared to see the deal through . More common is a corporate culture clashbetween companies, which can put paid to any deal. Even having agreed a deal, things may notbe tied up quickly because when the lawyers get involved, everything gets slowed down as theyargue about small details. De Cohen thinks that children are the masters of negotiation. Their goals are totally selfish. They understand the decision-making process within families perfectly. If Mum refuses their request, they will troop along to Dad and pressure him. If al else fails, they will try the grandparents, usingsome emotional blackmail. They can also be very single-minded and have an inexhaustible supplyof energy for the cause they are pursuing. So there are lesson to be learned from watching andlistening to children. 15 Dr Cohen treats negotiation as a game in order to A put people at ease B remain detached C be competitive D impress rivals 16 Many people say “no” to a suggestion in the beginning to A convince the other party of their point of view B show they are not really interested C indicate they wish to take the easy option D protect their company’s situation 17 Dr Cohen says that when you are trying to negotiate you should A adapt your style to the people you are talking to B make the other side feel superior to you C dress in a way to make you feel comfortable. D try to make the other side like you 18 According to Dr Cohen, understanding the other person will help you to A gain their friendship B speed up the negotiations C plan your next move. Dconvince them of your point of view 19 Deals sometimes fail because A negotiations have gone on too long B the companies operate in different ways C one party risks more than the other. D the lawyers work too slowly 20 Dr Cohen mentions children’s negotiation techniques to show that you should A be prepared to try every B try not to make people feel guilty C be careful not to exhaust yourself D control the decision-making process. 参考答案接解析 关于negotiating techniques的。

For each question (23-28) on the opposite page, choose the correct answer. Mark one letter (A, B or C) on your Answer Sheet. In a surprise move, 33% of the shares in privately-owned British sandwich chain Contrast, were recently sold to King Coffee, the international coffee shop chain. ‘We could already afford to expand overseas,’says Caroline Bell, Contrast’s Chairman, ‘but didn’t know the best way to do it. This way, we’ll benefit from King Coffee’s experience, while keeping the two companies’brands and branches quite separate.’Caroline Bell and Johnny Nash’s first venture was to set up a clothes shop ten years ago. Later they began selling sandwiches there, and then, finding sandwiches more profitable, gave up selling clothes. During this time Bell has been involved in every aspect of the business, including sandwich making and now heading the company, while Johnny Nash is the Chief Executive. With Nash responsible for day-to-day management, Bell can find time to concentrate on what she describes as the secret of their success: experimenting with different ingredients, to add to the menu. ‘We believe in doing what we do best,’ she says, ‘so we won’t move into other fields. And our customers like our friendly service, so we’ll make sure that doesn’t change.’One reason for the friendly service is that five times a year, the shop managers spend a day at another branch serving customers, so that they don’t forget what it’s like for the sales staff. Senior managers, too, participate in this scheme. ‘It’s great because you’re in contact with both customers and staff,’Bell says. ‘Weconsidered introducing it for the whole workforce, but it was too difficult.’The company see their staff as key, and Bell is proud that most managerial appointments come from within the chain. ‘Some people think that companies need to bring managers in from outside, but we haven’t found that. In fact we’ve done so well that there’s a risk we’ll stop trying, which would ruin Contrast. We would like to think that as long as sandwiches stay popular, we’ll always be successful, but of course that isn’t true.’And will she always be the sandwich queen? ‘If I were just doing it for the money, I could sell out tomorrow and be rich. But what matters to me is that the people I work with think I’m doing a good job. I’ll stay for as long as they think that, but I can’t imagine finding anything else more interesting.’23.Why has Contrast sold shares to King Coffee?A.It needs the money to fund expansion abroad.B.It hopes to learn how to move into foreign markets.C.It wants to use the King Coffee name in other countries.正确答案:B24.How did Caroline Bell begin working for Contrast?A.She was one of the people who started the company.B.She joined the company as a sandwich maker.C.She was appointed at senior manager level.正确答案:A25.Bell’s plan for the company is toA.expand the range of sandwiches on offer.B.move into new types of products.C.improve the quality of the ingredients they use.正确答案:A26.What happens on five days a year?A.Customers have the chance to talk to managers.B.Managers go to a different shop to work.C.All employees work in another shop.正确答案:B27.What does Bell consider to be the biggest danger to the company?A.Most of the managers were promoted internally.B.Sandwich shops are going out of fashion.C.The management might relax their efforts.正确答案:C28.Bell says she would leave the company if sheA.lost the respect of colleagues.B.made enough money.C.became bored with the work.正确答案:APART SIXRead the company profile below about a retail group.
