1973年，上海工艺美术研究所到共青中学挑选学生，招考老师一眼相中了有绘画特长的奚小琴。

她画的是一幅“养小鸡”的人物画，因之被剪纸组留下了。
相中她的是号称“江南神剪”的王子淦。
因当时搞人物剪纸的很少，这时却来了一个喜欢人物画的姑娘，王大师自然不放过了。
正是王子淦的慧眼识珠，致使奚小琴后来在这个艺术门类脱颖而编者按：剪纸作为第一批入选国家级非物质文化遗产名录的民间艺术，在我国有着广泛的群众基础和重要的社会价值。
