Theywant something more fulfilling out of life, something that feeds their spiritual side andconnects them to a bigger purpose. For many, the answer is embracing faith – anddevoting their lives to serving others.B) Flocks of people in their 50s and 60s are putting aside thoughts of a comfortableretirement and heading to theological school, where they’ve become thefastest-growing age group in recent years. They’re putting in years of study and fieldwork to become chaplains (牧师), spiritual counselors, missionaries, and educatorsand social workers for nonprofits with religious ties. And they’re taking that trainingeverywhere from disaster zones to poor villages to hospital bedsides. Boomers areturning to careers in which meaning and purpose are front and center.C) Why the change? For many older adults, mortgages are paid (or nearly so),children are on their own and first careers are winding down; as such, there’s timeand freedom to “do good”. Equally important, thoughts about one’s mortality begin tosurface, along with some tough questions: Have I lived my life well? Have I made adifference?D) Not that a leap into faith is always paradise. Some people spend up to six years in training, sometimes at great expense and a distance from friends and family. Their sense of mission is “constantly tested, poked and prodded (刺激,激励)”, says Jonathan Englert, author of The Collar, a book that chronicles (记录) a year in the life of a Catholic seminary for second-career priests-in-training.E) After graduation, most face stiff competition for jobs that typically demand long hours, sophisticated political skills and the ability to comfort people in their darkest moments. Still, if the greatest use of a life, as the philosopher William James said, is to spend it for something that will outlast it, few paths seem to offer more rewards than joining the clergy and related fields. Here are three individuals who have taken that path.It All Began With KatrinaF) When Mike Watson, a New York lawyer, traveled to New Orleans in 2007 to help victims of Hurricane Katrina, his goal was simple: To teach his son, Tristan, then 11 years old, “that there are people in the world who aren't as well off as we are”. But after a weeklong stay in the city's hard-hit Ninth Ward, it was the father who absorbed a life-changing lesson. “I realized how enriching it was to be involved in helping other people,” says Mr. Watson, now 61. By the time he and Tristan returned to Katonah, N.Y., he says, “I had decided that’s what I needed to be doing with the rest of my life.”G) Today, Mr. Watson is enrolled at General Theological Seminary (神学院) in New York City, which was established by t he Episcopal Church. After he earns a master’s degree in divinity next year, he plans to start a nonprofit to help churches create community-outreach programs similar to the one that took him to New Orleans in 2007. Mr. Watson, who is supporting his family and paying for seminary with savings, also spearheads (领导,带头) community-service work for Grace Church in Manhattan, under whose sponsorship he made his trip to New Orleans. With Hurricane Katrina relief work now over, he recruits carpenters, plumbers and parishioners (教区居民) to rebuild flood-damaged homes in a coal-mining region of Appalachia.H) Doubts about his chosen path remain. His peers are established veterans in their jobs, while he is very much the new hand. What’s more, starting over means a lot of uncertainty. Among his concerns: “I have no idea where I will be living two years from now.” Still, Mr. Watson says he has no regrets. “Spiritually, it is very enriching for people like me, who go through our day and think life can be difficult, to make connections with people who really need to see the love of God.”After Wall Street, a Search for ConnectionsI) David Daniel Klipper worked for almost 25 years on Wall Street. But in the wake of 9/11, he began to feel a spiritual hunger that took him in an unexpected direction – to life as a chaplain and rabbinic (犹太教的) pastor. “I love the life I get to lead,” says Mr. Klipper, 60, who supervises a training program for chaplains at Stamford Hospital in Connecticut and works with patients himself. “If you tell someone at a party you are a chaplain, they tell you that you are wonderful and run away. Chaplains are not good at small talk. We are good at intimacy. I crave that intimacy and that feeling of connection. That’s what makes life worthwhile for me.” And thus he teaches students to “stay present, even when there is great pain”, in order to focus on the spiritual needs of their patients.J) He remembers fondly a patient he calls Susan. Diagnosed with brain cancer at a relatively young age, she saw Mr. Klipper when she came to the hospital for chemotherapy (化学疗法) and other treatments, including a particularly painful procedure in which doctors administered radiation after fixing her head in a vise (台钳). The two had frequent conversations and found themselves trying to answer unsettling questions, including: What purpose is this illness serving? “Every once in a while,” Mr. Klipper says, he and Susan would “experience a moment of viewing the world from a slightly different place, where we could see not only the good things that we liked but the things we wished hadn’t happened. And we could hold on to them all –like threads that form a tapestry (挂毯,织锦). It was a kind of acceptance. A moment of grace."”K) These chaplaincy-training programs are “where academic theologies come to die”, he says. “It is one thing to read about theology in seminary. It is an entirely different thing to sit with a 45-year-old mother who is dying and asking how God could be doing this to her.” It’s a job, he adds, that carries “an awesome responsibility”.Riches of a Different KindL) Kathy Dain had it all: a six-figure salary, a Mercedes – even her own Piper Archer airplane. Today, she enjoys “a different kind of wealth” as the temporary, associate pastor at First Presbyterian Church with an active community-outreach program in Sarasota, Fla.M) Although active in a Presbyterian church as a teenager, the Rev. Dain, 56, who is single, says that for most of her adult life, she attended church just twice a year. “Being part of a church wasn’t something I felt drawn to.” she says. But one day in 2004, while showing houses – she was then a real-estate broker – to a couple, the conversation took an unexpected turn. “As we were driving around, they asked meabout my faith,” Ms.Dain recalls. “It was right around the time of the tsunami in Indonesia, when thousands of people were just wiped away. It started me thinking about how I missed the faith I had grown up with.”N) Since graduating from Pittsburgh Theological Seminary in 2011, Ms. Dain has worked for two churches. The first was in Ludington, Mich. “I had this dear, aging congregation (集会). My desire to be out on missions just wasn’t going to happen.”O) She recently finished a training program that will allow her to serve as a chaplain for disaster-relief organizations. As a trainee, she logged 300 hours this spring in the intensive-care unit at Morton Plant Hospital in Clearwater, Fla., where she has offered comfort to the sick and dying. “As a chaplain, I try to find a way to connect with them. I don’t have an agenda,” she says. “Nor am I a prayer pusher. I am simply there for the person. Just as a doctor takes care of the body, it is my job to provide spiritual care.”11)Mr. Watson is going to be granted a master’s de gree in divinity next year. G12)Ms. Dain went to church twice a year during much of her adulthood. M13)Despite uncertainty and doubts about his present work, Mr. Watson thinks it enriching for him to help people in need. H14)Joining the clergy is most rewarding in making full use of a life. E15)Some boomers spend a great deal of time and money in training for a leap into faith. D16)Ms. Dain took care of the sick and dying at Morton Plant Hospital. O17)In addition to success and security, many baby boomers want to own their faith. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished sentences. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C, and D. IT is commonly used to support andstreamline (提高……的效率) decision making in an organization. It can be used toaddress decisions about how to structure job tasks, organize production operations, manage inventory flow, and so on.Decisions that are simple and / or highly structured are good candidates forautomation. A structured decision is one in which the inputs, decision criteria, methodto process those inputs, and specific outputs are well-defined. For example, it is arelatively straightforward task to develop a computer program that will generate latepayment notices for those customers who have not paid their monthly telephone billon time. The program requires certain input data about billing information, decisionrules about what constitutes a missed payment, and output instructions to generate aform letter or billing notice to be sent to the customer. The automation of structured decisions is also used to improve communication anddecision making between organizations. Not long ago, it was necessary for retailersto call credit card companies every time a customer wished to charge a purchaseusing a credit card. A representative working for the credit card company wouldexamine the customer’s record to determine whether or not to approve eachpurchase. Today, this process has been automated so that information and decisionsrelated to purchases using a credit card are transmitted electronically. Now consider the many benefits of automating this simple process. First, automatingthis process has reduced the cost of operations for credit card companies. Cardissuers have streamlined and downsized (缩小规模;减员) their staff since fewercustomer representatives are needed to handle purchase approvals / disapprovals.Second, the automated process has sped up the approval process so that retailerscan deliver prompt and reliable service to their customers (improving customersatisfaction) and process more financial transactions within a given time period.Thirdly, the communication between retailers and card issuers has been improved.More purchases can be approved with greater accuracy using the IT-enabled system.21)What is the passage mainly about?22)Why is it easier to develop a program for generating late payment notices for customers who failed to pay their bills on time?23)What did retailers have to do in the past to charge a purchase with a credit card?24)What can we learn about today’s credit card companies?25)From the passage, we can conclude that automation can most greatly change _______.参考答案:21) C 22) A 23) C 24) B 25) A∧收起解析Popular stereotype would have us believe that young women are often concerned about every up and down in their relationships –but one study says “romance drama”actually has a bigger effect on men.Any reader of Cosmo could be forgiven for thinking that women spend all their time analyzing their boyfriends’ body language, text messages, and even sleep style for evidence of a likely breakup or marriage proposal. But according to Science Daily, researchers from Wake Forest University and Florida State University surveyed a thousand men and women between the ages of 18 and 23, and found that men were actually more likely to suffer emotionally from relationship difficulties. Study co-author Robin Simon explains that “for young men, their romantic partners are often their primary source of intimacy – in contrast to young women who are more likely to have close relationships with famil y and friends.”Young men themselves – as well as pop culture in general – often proclaim the idea that women spend all their time talking about their boyfriends, while men never mention their girlfriends to their fellow beings. This may be partially true –but it’s not because men don’t care about their girlfriends or because other topics are simply more important to men than relationships. In fact, it might be better for men to discuss their relationships more openly, getting reassurance about small problems and advice for solving larger ones. But young men shouldn’t necessarily act like young women in every way. Simon also says that “while young men are more affected emotionally by the quality of their current relationships, young women are more emotionally affected by whether they are in a relationship or not. So, young women are more likely to experience depression when the relationship ends, or benefit more by simply being in a relationship.” Being single is still a greater stigma (耻辱) for women than for men, but bad relationships aren’t good for either gender. And, as has been learned by many, sometimes you’re better off alone.26)What is the finding of the study done by researchers in the US universities?A. Women usually have closer relationships with family and friends.B. Men findtheir source of intimacy mainly from their romantic partners.C. Women are more concerned about the ups and downs of a relationship.D. Men are often more strongly affected by relationship difficulties.27)Why don’t men talk about their girlfriends?28)In Simon’s opinion, _____________.A. men often feel more depressed when a relationship endsB. men often caremore about the quality of a relationshipC. women don’t benefit as much as men do from a relationship D. women often spend much time talking about their relationships29)What is the advice given by the writer?A. Ithas formed an alliance with Ashoka, a global organization that invests in leading“social entrepreneurs” – people who use creative business practice with the potentialto solve a social problem. The alliance is offering a new prize for socialentrepreneurship, to bring together two groups of people who might never meet inother cases. “As the biggest wealth manager in the region, we are at the crossroadsbetween capital and ideas – so why not bring the people with capital together with thepeople who have ideas?”B) The social entrepreneurs that are shortlisted (入围) must have been workingsuccessfully with Ashoka for at least three years. Winning the prize is not really thepoint. Simply being selected to be in the room with a bunch of wealthy people givesthe social entrepreneurs great trustworthiness with potential donors, and evenrunners-up (第二名) have a good chance of coming away with a new financial supporter or some other form of help. Héctor Castillo Berthier, who runs an innovative project for troubled Mexican teenagers, came third in last year's Mexican prize, but still got a crucial donation and free use of office space.C) Ashoka is not alone in bringing social entrepreneurs together with the wealthy and powerful. Social entrepreneurs now rub shoulders with the world's business and political elite at the World Economic Forum in Davos. Ashoka was founded in 1980 by Bill Drayton, a former McKinsey consultant, who expects the rise of social entrepreneurship to generate huge benefits. He says it is now helping to bring about a productivity miracle in what he calls the “citizen half of the world” (education, welfare and so on), a sector that for three centuries has lagged behind the “business half of the world”. The emergence of more social entrepreneurs, and their improved access to growth capital as they get better connected to philanthropists (慈善家), is creating enormous productivity opportunities for the citizen sector.D) The citizen sector is mainly made up of government plus the non-profit sector. Both government and non-profits have traditionally been run inefficiently. The productivity miracle is due both to a shift from government provision to more efficient private provision and by an increase in the efficiency of the non-profit sector.E) However, the improvement the efficiency may still have some way to go. In 2004, Bill Bradley, a former presidential candidate, and two consultants claimed that, in America alone, there was a “$100 billion opportunity” for the non-profit sector to improve its efficiency through better management. But is social entrepreneurship the best way to achieve that? There is no easy answer, because nobody is sure what exactly the term means. In a book on the rise of social entrepreneurship, David Bornstein notes that most discussion of social entrepreneurship tends to revolve around “how business and management skills can be applied to achieve social ends”. He himself sees social entrepreneurs as “transformative forc es: people with new ideas to address major problems who are persistent in the pursuit of their visions”.F) Mr. Schramm of the Kauffman Foundation, which promotes a better understanding of entrepreneurship, says that being an entrepreneur means being a risk-taker, but a high risk of failure may be the last thing that many non-profits need. Mr. Omidyar, a philanthropist and the founder of eBay, is uncomfortable with the label either, which he feels implies a disapproval of profits that he does not share. But his fellow philanthropist from eBay, Mr. Skoll, thinks social entrepreneurship has something going for it. The mission of his foundation is “to advance systemic change to benefit communities around the world by investing in, connecting and celebrating social entrepreneurs”.G) Among other things, Mr. Skoll has endowed the Skoll Centre for Social Entrepreneurship at Oxford University's Saïd Business School. This is part of a growing trend for academic institutions, including nowadays most business schools. Harvard Business School started teaching a course on social enterprise 12 years ago. Mr. Schramm worries that some of these courses are more likely to turn students against capitalism. But Mr. Whitehead, a former Goldman Sachs boss, sees it as part of a trend among the elite in many countries who want to make not just money but “a difference”.H) Certainly the number of business-school graduates going into the non-profit sector has increased. That appeals to the new philanthropists, who want to see people like themselves in charge of the non-profit organizations they support. But these new professionals may achieve as much by using the latest management techniques to improve the performance of existing non-profit organizations than by creating new ones through social entrepreneurship.I) Mr. Collins, the management master, says getting the right people is arguably even more important in the non-profit world than it is in business, because it is often harder for non-profits to get rid of employees once they are “on the bus”. Business leaders can fire people more easily and can spend money on buying talent. But some social entrepreneurs have found their own ways of securing top talent. Wendy Kopp, who in 1989 founded Teach for America – a non-profit organization – made it clear from the start that only the best would do. By last year, over 97,000 people had applied to work for her organization, but only 14,000 had been accepted. Ms Kopp's ability to pick and choose boosted her credibility with her philanthropic supporters and enabled her to raise more money.J) Many non-profit organizations have been cautious of working with big donors because their money can come with too many strings attached. And that is starting to change. Barbara Stocking, the boss of Oxfam, a global charity, says they now want to raise more money from the sort of wealthy philanthropists it has not targeted in the past –if only because in Britain there haven't been many of them. “I'm not sure we have been asking for enough money,” s he says.K) But the main problem for many non-profit organizations is how to get bigger. “One of the problems is that well-run non-profits don't necessarily grow,” says Nigel Morris, the co-founder of a credit-card company. True, growth isn't everything. Indeed, Mr. Collins worries that non-profits will put scale before genuine effectiveness: “One of the markers of mediocre (平庸的) companies is that they become obsessed with scale and growth,” he says. But donors need to decide if they simply want to buy services from a non-profit, or whether they want to invest in helping the organization grow. If growth is important to them, they need to become a lot less critical aboutexpenses.L) There is no merger-and-acquisition (并购) market in the non-profit world. And for all sorts of reasons, there are far too many non-profits. Philanthropists could help by encouraging consolidation (整合), says John Studzinski, co-head of HSBC's investment bank and an active philanthropist. “In homelessness work, I'm a great advocate of consolidation. There are about 40 homelessness projects in London;only eight are any good,” he says.M) There is also a role to be played by philanthropists in encouraging non-profits to develop other sources of finance, to reduce their dependence on the goodwill of donors. Providing fee-generating services is one strategy. Doing work for the government is another. Many non-profits have long generated revenues in this way.11)Many non-profit organizations are now faced with the difficulty in promoting their growth and scale. K12)The growing number of social entrepreneurs and better chances to get growth capital will help improve the productivity of the citizen sector. C13)Business schools are now attaching increasing importance to the courses on social entrepreneurship. G14)The number of non-profit organizations is larger than necessary due to various reasons. L15)Philanthropists can encourage non-profit organizations to be more financially independent of sponsors with two strategies. M16)In an experiment by an alliance for social entrepreneurship, potential sponsors are likely to trust social entrepreneur seven if they have not won any prize. B17)It is difficult to determine whether social entrepreneurship is the most effective means to improve the efficiency of non-profit sector. E18)Non-profit organizations are not so flexible in hiring or firing their employeescompared with those for-profit organizations. Choose the best answer to each question.Something big is happening to the human race – something that could be called theGreat Transformation.Take the energy for example. Some people worry about what will happen when thedeposits of petroleum are gone, but researchers are already finding all kinds of newways to obtain energy. Someday, solar power collected by satellites circling the earthor nuclear power manufactured by mankind may give us all the energy we need foran expanding civilization. Space exploration promises to open up many newterritories for human settlement, as well as leading to the harvest of mineralresources like the asteroids (小行星).Scientific research continues to open up previously undreamed-of possibilities.Seventy years ago, few people could even imagine things like computers or lasers.Today, a host of newly emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence andgenetic engineering are opening up all kinds of new paths for technologists.Like it or not, our advancing technology has made us masters of the earth. We not only dominate all the other animals, but we are reshaping the world's plant life and even its soil and rocks, its waters and surrounding air. Mountains are being dug up to provide minerals and stone for buildings. The very ground under our feet is washing away as we chop down the forests, plow up the fields, and excavate (挖掘) foundations for our buildings.Human junk is cluttering (拥塞) up not only the land but even the bottom of the sea.And so many chemicals are being released into the air by human activities that scientists worry that the entire globe may warm, causing the polar icecaps to melt and ocean waters to flood vast areas of the land.No one knows what the Great Transformation means or where it will ultimately lead. But this mysterious Transformation is the biggest story of all time. It is the story of the human race itself.21)By “the Great Transformation”, the author means ______________.22)What energy source is mentioned as a way to provide our energy needs in the future?23)According to the scientists, what directly leads to flooding in vast areas of the land?24)What tone does the author convey when he describes the impacts of advancing technology?25)Which of the followings can best summarize the article?A. Who would think that spending a year doing a business plan is a good thing, or that formal business plans spell success?Business plans are sometimes overdone and misused, but the planning process is critical. About 60 years ago, Dwight D. Eisenhower said, “The plan is useless; it’s the planning that’s important.” That’s still true today. In fact, all business plans are wrong. They’re the work of humans guessing the future, dealing with uncert ainty and making assumptions. Still, the planning process is absolutely essential. A startup entrepreneur’s planning process should start with a plan and continue with a plan vs.reality review, progress tracking and course correction.Planning is about controlling your destiny: Establish your business goals and outline the steps needed to achieve them –don’t just react to events. While your plan will be wrong, of course, how would you track what is going wrong without it? You can’t havea route without a starting point and a destination, but even the most well-plannedroute may require some detours (绕道).For the best results, planning should be concrete and specific. For each step in your plan, create dates, deadlines and clearly assigned responsibilit ies. You can’t track your progress and steer your company efficiently with vague generalities (概述). In real-world planning, form follows function. When new businesses seek investors they usually need formal plans. Investors who say they don't need formal plans still need to see your strategy, focus, priorities, commitments, dates and deadlines. The content has to be there, regardless of the format. Although you may not need aformal plan, all businesses need to go through the planning process. There will always be examples of businesses with great plans that fail and businesses with no plans that succeed, but I feel it’s very dangerous to tell startup entrepreneurs they don’t need a plan. The truth of the matter is that most of us need more planning, not more rationalizations for not doing it.26)What does the quotation from Dwight D. Eisenhower imply?27)Why does the author say that “all business plans are wrong”?28)What’s the most important function of a plan?29)What elements should be included in a plan?30)What can we infer from the passage?A. All plans are wrong, so no specific plan is necessary for a project.B. Planningshould be as detailed as possible with the most well-planned route.C. From 1 a.m.to 7 a.m., shop lights are being turned off, and lights inside office buildings must beextinguished within an hour of workers leaving the premises. The lighting on France’sbuilding facades (正面) cannot be turned on before sunset. Over the next two years, regulations restricting lighting on billboards will go into effect. These rules aredesigned to eventually cut carbon dioxide emissions by 250,000 tons per year, savethe equivalent of the annual energy consumption of 750,000 households, and reducethe country’s overall energy bill by 200 million Euros ($266 million).B) But no less a moti vation, says France’s Environment Ministry, is to “reduce the print of artificial lighting on the nocturnal (夜间的) environment” – a powerful acknowledgement that excessive use of lighting in many parts of the world is endangering our health and the health of the ecosystems on which we rely. The good news, however, is that light pollution is readily within our grasp to control.C) Until recently, efforts to restrain our use of light have been primarily in response to the serious light pollution erasing starry nights. But researchers are increasingly focusing on the impacts of so-called ecological light pollution, warning that disrupting these natural patterns of light and dark, and thus the structures and functions of ecosystems, is having profound impacts.D) The problem is worsening as India, Brazil, and numerous other countries are becoming increasingly affluent and urbanized. Satellite views of the earth at night show vast areas of North America, Europe, the Middle East, and Asia glowing white, with only the world’s remotest regions –Siberia, the Tibetan plateau, the Sahara Desert, the Amazon, and the Australian outback –still hidden in darkness. Some countries, such as Britain, and some US states –including Connecticut and California – have enacted regulations to reduce light pollution, but most nations and cities still do little to dial down the excessive use of light.E) Technological advances such as LEDs, or light-emitting diodes (二极管), can improve our ability to reduce and better regulate lighting, but these same new lights may actually make things worse because they contain heavy doses of a “blue-rich” white light that is especially disruptive to circadian (昼夜的) rhythms.F) Scientists are investigating new ways to provide society with the lighting it demands for security, commerce, and aesthetics, while greatly reducing the flood of light that is increasingly interfering with human health and the ability of many creatures to function. One research group funded by the German government –Verlust der Nacht, or Loss of Night –is coordinating numerous studies on light pollution, ranging from research into the socio-political challenges of cutting light pollution in the Berlin metropolitan area to the effects of light pollution on nocturnal mammals.G) Every flip of a light switch contributes to altering ancient patterns of mating, migration, and feeding, with no time for species to adapt. On the Caribbean island of Tobago, a 2012 study of leatherback turtles – a species that has been on earth for 150 million years –found that “artificial lighting of the nesting beaches is the biggest threat to survival of newly-hatched turtles and a major factor in declining leatherback turtle populations.” Evolved to follow the reflected light of the stars a nd moon from the beach to the ocean, baby turtles now instead follow the light of hotels andstreetlights, with the result that they die of dehydration (脱水), are eaten by predators, or run over by cars.H) Many migrating birds, drawn off-course by artificial light, join the breathtaking number –between 100 million and one billion, we don’t really know – killed each year by collision with human-made structures. Recent studies show that for bats – whose natural pest control benefits US agriculture alone by billions of dollars annually, according to a 2011 study in Science– artificial light disrupts patterns of travel and feeding since many bat species avoid illuminated areas. Recent articles on a menagerie of species reflect a new awareness of artificial l ight’s effects on ecology.I) Of course, “humans are animals as well,” explains Steven Lockley of Harvard Medical School’s Division of Sleep Medicine, “and so when light / dark cycles mess up seasonal patterns of trees or breeding cycles of amphibians (两栖动物), there’s no reason to think it’s not doing the same to us.”J) As recently as 1980, humans were thought to be immune to the effects of artificial light at night. But continuing research has shown that nocturnal light disrupts our sleep, confuses our circadian rhythms –those 24-hour biological processes that regulate our body’s functions –and impedes the production of the hormone melatonin at much lower levels than previously thought possible.K) Researchers and dark-sky advocates are seeking to reduce the harmful effects of new lighting technologies and devise solutions to the flood of light that erases the night in many parts of the world. The International Dark-Sky Association and the Illuminating Engineering Society of North America have together designed the Model Lighting Ordinance, which communities of any size can adopt. The MLO recommends limits for the amount of light in five different zones of lighting intensity. The regulation also recommends banning unshielded lighting in all zones.L) In the Journal of Applied Ecology, researchers have identified numerous practical steps to reduce light pollution: changing the spectral (光谱的) composition of lighting (especially LEDs), limiting the duration of lighting, reducing the “trespass” of lighti ng into areas not intended to be lit, altering the intensity of lighting, and preventing areas from being artificially lit in the first place.M) The relatively simple act of shielding our lights –installing or retrofitting lamp fixtures (固定装置) that direct light downward to its intended target – represents our best chance to control light pollution. While we seldom leave our interior lights bare, most of our outdoor lighting remains unshielded, sending light straight into the sky, into our eyes, into our neighbors’ bedrooms. Until recently, consumers had fewbuying choices, but that is changing. Companies such as Lowe’s, the home-improvement chain, now offer lines of shielded lighting fixtures. Street lighting, stadium lighting, parking lot and gas station lighting – all can be shielded.N) The objection will be that we need all this light for safety and security, with the justification that light equals safety, and darkness danger. This common belief goes far to explain why many gas stations and parking lots are lit more than 10 times as brightly as they were just 20 years ago, and why light pollution continues to grow at up to 20 percent per year, depending on the region. In fact, the issue of light at night and safety is complex, with little convincing evidence to support common assumptions. For example, ever-brighter lights can actually diminish security by casting glare that impedes our vision and creates shadows where criminals can hide.O) Experts say it is far more important to use light effectively than abundantly.Explaining France’s new lighting rules, Delphine Batho, until recently France’s environment minister, described the government’s desire to “change the culture” to include responsible use of light. This change is to be applauded, for what increasing numbers of studies – as well as our own eyes – tell us is that we are using far more light than we need, and at tremendous cost.11)Some organizations that support dark sky have come up with suggestions on how to reduce the damaging effects of lighting. K12)Research done in 2012 has shown that the survival of one type of turtle species is now threatened by artificial light. G13)The French government has implemented new lighting rules recently to protect the environment and save energy use. A14)A comparatively easy way to reduce light pollution is to have lights outside buildingsshielded. M15)The patterns of travel and feeding of many migrating birds have also been disturbed by artificial light. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished sentences. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C, and D. Choose the best answer to each question.Creativity has been considered in terms of process, product or person and has beendefined as the interpersonal and intrapersonal process by means of which original, high quality, and genuinely significant products are developed. In dealing with youngchildren, the focus should be on the process, i.e., developing and generating originalideas, which is seen as the basis of creative potential. For a proper understanding of children’s creativity, one must distinguish creativityfrom intelligence and talent. Some experts expressed concern about whethercreativity in young children could be differentiated from other cognitive abilities. Morerecent studies have shown that components of creative potential can indeed bedistinguished from intelligence. The term “gifted” is often used to imply high intelligence. But some scientists have argued that intelligence and creativity are independent of each other, and a highly creative child may or may not be highly intelligent.Creativity goes beyond possession and use of artistic or musical talent. In this context, “talent” refers to the possession of a high degree of technical skill in a specialized area. Thus an artist may have wonderful technical skills, but may not succeed in evoking the emotional response that makes the viewer feel that a painting, for example, is unique. It is important to keep in mind that creativity is evidenced not only in music or art, but throughout the curriculum, in science, social studies and other areas. Most measures of children’s creativity have focused on ideational (构思的) fluency.Ideational fluency tasks require children to generate as many responses as they can to a particular stimulus, as is done in brainstorming. Ideational fluency is generally considered to be a critical feature of the creative process. For young children, the focus of creativity should remain on process: the generation of ideas. Adult acceptance of multiple ideas in a non-evaluative atmosphere will help children generate more ideas or move to the next stage of self-evaluation. As children develop the ability for self-evaluation, issues of quality and the generation of products become more important. The emphasis at this age should be on self-evaluation, for these children are exploring their abilities to generate and evaluate hypotheses, and revise their ideas based on that evaluation.21)What should be paid attention to in terms of young children’s creativity development?22)The main purpose of Paragraph 2 is to _________.23)How can an artist make the viewers feel that he is creative?24)What ability does “ideational fluency” (Para. 4) refer to?25)How should adults induce creativity in children?A. By teaching children to be able to evaluate their own ideas.B. By responding tochildren’s ideas in a non-judgmental way.C. By reminding children of the importance of others’ evaluations.D. By asking children to correct their ideas whenever they are wrong.参考答案:21) B 22) C 23) D 24) A 25) B∧收起解析Don’t ask whether the proposed $3 billion merger (兼并) of United Airlines and Continental will benefit you. It won’t. Because this isn’t about you. It’s about them.Specifically, it’s about the need for the airlines to raise fares and increase revenues after years of unreasonable discounting that led to billions in losses. “For the airlines, it’s a good thing,” says Matthew Smith, an airline analyst (分析师) at Majestic Research. “By not having as much supply, they can fly fuller planes, charge higher prices and operate more efficiently. For the customers, well, I don’t think they’re going to see planes that are only two-thirds full or bargain – basement prices from airlines desperate to fill seats.” In a joint press release, the new company promised “strong competitive pressure on fares,” but in reality that pressure has been coming from budget carriers such as Southwest and JetBlue. Those of us in the back of the bus may have to worry about employees who have lost some seniority (老资格) in a joined workforce. Labor issues might be a problem, says Perkins, contributing editor of . He remembers the strike of 1985 in United Airlines. “If and when they start making money,” says Perkins, “those unions could turn around and say, ‘We gave it up when you needed it. Where’s our share? ’” The potential for a strike worries him, si nce the new united company will hold 21 percent of the market and finding a replacement seat in the event of a strikecould be next to impossible. As for fares, there’s no place to go but up. After Delta merged with Northwest, fares on their combined routes rose at least 10 percent, according to George Hobica, founder of . But that’s no reason to panic. “The vast majority of leisure travel is optional,” he says. “When airlines raise fares, people stop flying. So they’ll have to be careful.” Even if this merger prompts a US Airways link-up and even more integration, Hobica doesn’t think we’re going to see wild fare increases. But it definitely means that you have to say goodbye to the past. “I’ve enjoyed the ride,”says Hobica with a s igh. “But the party’s over.”26)What can we learn from the first paragraph?A. The merged airlines will get their revenues increased soon after.B. After themerger, airlines have to try harder to make the planes full.C. The merged airlines will no longer offer discount to attract customers.D. Before the merger, airlines have suffered great loss from discounting.27)The word “promised” (Para. 1) most closely means ___________.28)What does Perkins worry about?A. The new airline company doesn’t want to employ senior workers.B. The newairline company holds too much share of the market.C. If a strike happens, the new airline company will face a hard situation.D.
