For the first group the room was painted white, for the second, dark brown. Movement of each group was followed by an electrical system under the carpet. The experiment revealed (显示,透露)that those who entered the dark brown room walked more quickly, covered more area, and spent less time in the room than the people in the white environment.Dark brown stimulated (刺激) more activity, but the activity ended sooner. Another experiment presented three groups of subjects with the same photographs, but each group was in a different kind of room — an “ugly” room like a messy storeroom, an average room, such as a nice office, and a tastefully designed living room with carpets and drapes (帘子). Results showed that the subjects in the beautiful room tended (趋向,往往是) to give higher ratings to the faces than did those in the ugly room. Some studies suggest that students do better on tests taken in the ugly room. Other studies suggest that students do better on tests taken in comfortable, attractive rooms than in ordinary-looking or ugly rooms.1. B From the two experiments it may be possible to conclude that ________.A. students should take an exam in a comfortable and dark brown roomB. different kinds of colors and rooms will stimulate more activityC. beautiful rooms and a white color will cause people to give higher ratings to the faceD. environment will have effe cts on the people’s movement2. A Compared with the people in the dark brown room, the people in the white room will _____.A. spend less timeB. become more activeC. stay longerD. influence students’ marks3. B Beautiful rooms will finally_________.A. make people cover more areaB. encourage people to walk fasterC. make the subjects more beautifulD. influence students’ marks4. A The underline word “subjects” means __________.A. courses to be studiedB. topics to be discussedC. persons to be experimented withD. students to be examined(B)One silly question I simply can’t stand is “How do you feel?” Usually the question is asked of a man in action — a man on the go, walking along the streets, or busily working at his desk. So what do you expect him to say? He’ll probably say, “Fine, I’m all right,” but you have put a bug in his ear —maybe now he’s not sure. If you are a good friend, you may have s een something in his face or his walk that he overlooked (忽略) that morning. It starts worrying him a little. First thing you know, he looks in a mirror to see if everything is all right, while you go merrily on your way asking someone else “How do you feel?”Every question has its time and place. It’s perfectly acceptable, for example, to ask “How do you feel?” if you’re visiting a close friend in the hospital. But if the fellow is walking on both legs, hurrying to take a train, or sitting at his desk working, do not ask him that silly question. When George Bernard Shaw, a famous writer of plays, was in his eighties, someone asked him, “How do you feel?” Shaw put him in his place. “When you reach my age,” he said, “either you feel all right or you’re dead.”5. A According to the writer, greetings such as “How do you feel?” __________.A. show one’s consideration for othersB. are a good way to make friendsC. are proper to ask a man in actionD. generally make one feel uneasy6. A The question “How do you feel?” seems to be correct and suitable when asked of ______.A. a man working at his deskB. a person having lost a close friendC. a stranger who looks somewhat worriedD. a friend who is ill7. A George Bernard Shaw’s reply in the text shows his ___________.A. cheerfulnessB. clevernessC. abilityD. polite8. What should you pay attention to while telling your story?II. 阅读短文,完成后面的题目:(每题5分,共40分)Walt Disney, the great film-maker, was born in Chicago in 1901. Disney’s greatest wishwas to be a famous artist. When he was a young man, he went to a newspaper office in Kansas City where he was living. He had some friends who worked in the office there. He took along some of his pictures in the hope of getting a job there. However, he had no luck. They looked at his pictures and said, “Sorry, young man. We don’t think there is anything of interest in your pictures.”Disney’s friends tried to encourage him. “Don’t worry, Walt. We like your pictures. They’re very good. We’re sure you’ll be well -known as an artist before long.”Disney did not lose heart. He continued to draw lots of pictures. His family was poor and he used to sit in the family garage and draw pictures there. One day a mouse came into the garage and played on the floor. Disney stopped drawing and watched the mouse. The mouse came towards him, so he gave the mouse a piece of bread. Then the mouse came and sat on his desk. Day after day the mouse came back and was given more bread. In this way over several days the artist and his mouse became good friends. Some years later, Disney moved to the west coast of the USA. He tried to get work as an artist, but still he was unsuccessful. One day he remembered the mouse that used to come out in his father’s garage. He picked up his pencil and started to draw. Day after day he experimented and drew different pictures of the mouse that he had known. At last he was pleased with one of his pictures of the mouse. He called it Mickey Mouse.Disney’s success as a cartoon -maker had begun. He soon drew other cartoon characters like Donald Duck and during the 1920s and the 1930s he made scores of cartoons about them. These cartoons were all short ones. Before the days of television, they used to be shown in cinemas all over the country before the main film was shown. Later Walt Disney made longer films. All of them were liked very much by children. J. Lee:I was shocked when I saw the news of the awfulness of some people towards innocent (无辜的) animals. They’re not feeling sorry for their actions simply because they don’t find anything wrong! Humans and other living beings are all a part of nature, so there’s no reason to mistreat our brothers and sisters just because our race is now a little stronger! Remember, we’re equal!Su Jun (Shanxi): I firmly hold the belief that the economy is the foundation of everything. If we want more care and ethical (人道的) treatment in China, the first thing to do is to make our country richer so that more financial support and manpower can be used to take care of animals. How could we spend so much money on pets with many people in China suffering from terrible poverty? Of course, cruelty to animals is completely wrong and what we should do now, if sensible, is just to treat them fairly and avoid abuse(虐待).Wang Jiangwei: We often hear that animals are our best friends and we should protect them. But why? The most popular reason is that if we damage the food chain, human beings will suffer a lot.So many people protect animals just for themselves —for medical research, for instance. However, if a person doesn’t believe an animal may save his life, he will be cruel to animals if he doesn’t love them at all. So I think the best way to protect animals is to let people really develop love for animals.Li Ting (Anhui University): A person will feel lonely living in a house without anyone else. Likewise, humans will feel lonely living on the earth without any other living things.Unfortunately, many people are driven by commercial benefit and selfish ideas. Many people treat animals badly because they don’t understand that loving animals is also loving human beings themselves. World Animal Day gives us a good chance to re-establish relations between animals and humans.Lakeman (Harbin):I think that protecting animals is the government’s work and not citizens’. A great many children grow up without seeing animals as anything other than pets or domestic animals. Perhaps they will not see them their whole lives. They can do nothing to protect animals. Pets don’t need protecting. But at the same time, a lot of wildlife is being destroyed for various reasons, For example, their habitats are destroyed or they are killed for economic benefit. So, our government should have regulations to prevent these things from happening again and should do something to channel people’s actions in a different direction.1. A G. J. B According to the discussion, the most important idea of animal protection is ________.A. that loving animals is also loving human beings themselvesB. to show humans’ love to other living beingsC. to show the equality between humans and other living beingsD. that animals can let people not feel lonely any longer4. His inventions affect every part of our lives. We all know that the electric bulb is one of Edison’s most important inventions. The invention of motion pictures is another good example.Edison began working on motion pictures after attending a lecture by Eadweard Muybridge, who used his zoopraxiscope (动物实验镜) to make animals move. Edison talked with Muybridge and decided to take up the subject of moving pictures. He plann ed to design “an instrument that does for the eye what the phonograph (留声机) does for the ear”. Edison’s first design included photographing a series of pictures on a cylinder (圆筒) that would be seen through a microscope as they turned. In addition, he planned to create sound movies by linking this equipment to a phonograph. While Edison provided the idea for the invention and the electrical and mechanical knowledge used in designing motion picture equipment, Dickson, who was a photographer, provided most of the knowledge on photography. By 1892 Edison and Dickson had invented a motion picture camera and a peephole-viewing (可以通过小孔观看的) device called the Kinetoscope. They were first shown publicly in 1893. The following year the first Edison films were shown.Edison was just one of the inventors in the United States and Europe who were working on motion pictures and should be remembered as the first to introduce a good system. However, Edison played almost no role in the development of projector (放映机) technology and other improvements in motion picture technology.判断下列句子的正(T)误(F):(1) A The invention of motion pictures is a contribution by Edison and Muybridge.(2) A The word “what” in the second paragraph means the same thing as it does in “What about g oing to the theatre on Sunday?”(3) A The fast Edison films were shown in 1894.(4) A Besides Edison, there were also many inventors in the United States and Europe who were working on motion pictures.BUY A JOINT TICKET AND VISIT THE OTHER HISTORIC ROYAL PALACESTHE TOWER OF LONDONRoyal (皇家的) palace and fortress (要塞) for over 900 years, scene of mystery, murder and home to the Crown Jewels.KENSINGTON PALACEBirthplace of Queen Victoria, this royal retreat is home to magnificent State Apartments and the stunning RoyalCeremonial Dress Collection, which includes dresses worn by HM Queen Elizabeth II and Diana, Princess of Wales. Should they allow their children to tra in to become top sports men and women? For many children it means starting schoolwork very young, and going out with friends and other interests have to take a second place. It’s very difficult to explain to a young child why he or she has to train five ho urs a day, even at the weekend, when 预习课堂 创新most of his or her friends are playing.Another problem is of course money. In many countries money for training is available from government for the very best young sportsmen and women. If this help can not be given, it means that it is the parents who have to find the time and the money to support their child’s development and sports clothes, transport to competitions, special equipment, etc. Can all be very expensive? Many parents are worried that it is dangerous to start serious training in a sport at an early age. Some doctors agree that young muscles may be damaged by training before they are properly developed. Professional trainers, however, believe that it is only by training young that you can reach the top as a successful sports person. A scientist in Sao Paulo wanted bees to make more honey. So he put forty-six African bees with some Brazilian bees. The bees bred and made a new kind of bee. But the new bees were a mistake. They did not want to make more honey. They wanted to attack. Then, by accident, twenty-six African bees escaped and bred with the Brazilian bees outside.Scientists could not control the problem. The bees spread. They went from Brazil to Venezuela. Then they went to Central America. Now they are in North America. They travel about 390 miles a year. Each group of bees, or colony (生物群,殖民地), grows four times a year. This means one million new colonies every five years. Why are people afraid of killer bees? People are afraid for two reasons. First, the bees sting (刺,刺痛) many more times than a normal bee. Killer bees can sting sixty times a minute non-stop for two hours. Second, killer bees attack in groups. Four hundred bee stings can kill a person.Already several hundred people are dead. Now killer bees are in Texas. In a few years they will spread all over the United States. People can do nothing but wait.1. A A scientist in Brazil wanted bees ________.A. to go to Central AmericaB. to grow four times a yearC. to make more honeyD. to breed with Brazilian bees outside2. You must discover what your own special needs are in English. You should pick out what makes English different from your own language and concentrate on those parts. And above all, you should pick out your own personal weakness in English, pick out your own special problems, find out what mistakesyou most often make and make a list of them.It will be best if, in your preparation, you can practice doing the various (各种各样的) sorts of work that you will be asked to do in examination. You should then make a careful note of anymistakes that you make more than once. Count up how many times you make for each mistake, and the mistake you make most often should be at the top of your list, the next most common in the second place, and so on.For example, if your native language is Japanese, you may find the problem of articles comes at the top of your list. If you speak German, you may find using some of the conjunctions is your biggest problem. If your mother tongue is French, you find you are always having trouble with some of prepositions. And if Italian is your language, you may constantly (经常地) forget to use a suitable pronoun when you should. But these are only examples of mistakes typical of certain languages. They may or may not be your particular personal mistakes. As I say, these personal ones are the most important of all to discover.5. They were thin and straight, rather like arrows but with shiny leaves at one end and muddy roots at the other. Terry and his father took them down the garden and planted them in their prepared places. Terry bad great hopes of the middle tree, now set in the holy spot where Henry, his cat, run over, had been laid to rest a year before. The nine trees made an avenue down one side of the garden, where there was already a fifteen-foot stonewall between the garden and the back yards of the Jenkins Street houses.“Why do we want a row of trees as well as a wall?” Terry asked his father. His father said, “For privacy. These trees grow very thickly.”His father’s love of privacy often puzzled Terry, who was not one to keep himself to himself, but he could see part of the point here. The houses in Jenkins Street were on higher ground. His friend Leslie lived in number twelve, and Leslie had only to stand on a box to see right over the wall.“Will the trees grow higher than the wall?” Terry asked then.“Oh yes, twice as high if not more. It’ll take a few years but they’ll grow.”So they were going to have nine trees thirty feet tall, to keep them from being overlooked. Terry wondered why this was so desirable. He said, “Our garden is very pretty. Why can’t we let the people over the wall see it? That wouldn’t be showing off, would it?”“No, I don’t think it would be,” his father said. “Yet some people might feel a bit less happy if they can always see a good thing that isn’t theirs. We don’t want to be the cause of any jealousy if we can help it.”This consideration for other people’s feelings must be a grown-up thing. Terry thought. It was not his idea of how to run things. He said, “These trees it seems a lot of trouble to go to just to stop people being jealous of us.”His father looked at him. “It isn’t much trouble, Terry,” he said. “These trees will grow without help from us. They’ll be beautiful. And listen to them. You can already hear them whispering to us in the wind.”1. A How do we know that Terry’s father was expecting the trees?A. He thought they would grow tall and thick.B. He expected them because they arrived by post.C. He and Terry had dug holes for them.D. The parcel was half open, so he could see they were trees.2. Lately, however, people havereported seeing them in quiet neighborhoods all acrossthe country! Usually considered shy and seldom seen, these lions are becoming more noticeable. In addition, the lions appear to be moving east. They were even reported in the suburbs (郊区) of Boston, Philadelphia, and Chicago. It seems certain that these “kings of the mountains” are moving. Why? Scientists are not sure. Some think that as the mountain lion population increases in the west, younger wild cats are leaving the area. These cats are searching for new homes and new places for food.“The young males are looking for new homes,”says Lynn Sadler, who is the director of the Mountain Lion Foundation in Sacramento, Calif. “People tend to create too many barriers (障碍), such as buildings, fences, roads, and noise. As the mountain lions seek new places and food and water sources (水源) , these barriers get in their way.”The sightings have made people increasingly watchful. Sometimes the “mountain lions” that people report seeing turn out t o be large dogs or even house cats. But at least a few of the meetings have been real. The building of new roads, the growing of suburbs and the growing popularity of outdoor activities are all increasing the chances that people in various parts of the country may meet up with a mountain lion.Because many people are concerned about the reappearance of the American lion, an expert outlined some ways they can avoid attracting the wild cats: Never leave pets or pet food outside; properly care for farm animals; and plan public land use to enable the lions to move safely from one place to another.“To be fair,” says the expert, “mountain lions are trying to regain their homes. They were here first. Now we need to find ways we can live together.”1. Mountain Lions Moving WestBLetter to Editor of TV WeeklyDear Sir/Madam,I read Alison Burnham’s review of when we were 12, and I do not agree with her.I thought the programme was wonderful —I found the old news pictures really interesting — they helped to bring to life the stories the people were telling. The programme reminds me of many things from my own childhood. For example, one day when I was about five, I was going to school on the bus by myself (this was the late 1960s). My mother had given me exactly the right money for a return ticket. I held out my hand with the money in it — one big coin on top of one little coin. The bus conductor took the big top coin only and she gave me a ticket, but it was a pink one for a single journey. I needed a white one for a return journey, but I was too frightened to say anything. When school finished for the day, I couldn’t catch the bus home — I had to walk. As a grown up, whenever I’ve been in a situation where I need to say something or take some action, this early memory of my bus ride comes back to me, and I’m able to take control of the situation.I would like to say to the director, Bret Chrysler, carry on making this kind of programme. Too much TV these days is quiz shows and so called “reality programmes”.I appreciate the human story that can make me laugh and cry.Yours faithfully,Chris Daniels5. You must discover what your own special needs are in English. You should pick out what makes English different from your own language and concentrate on those parts. And above all, you should pick out your own personal weakness in English, pick out your own special problems, find out what mistakesyou most often make and make a list of them.It will be best if, in your preparation, you can practice doing the various (各种各样的) sortsof work that you will be asked to do in examination.
