With such a tidy definition, it was easy to spot the difference. Not so in adulthood, where we are expected to “foot” bills, “chair” committees, and “dialogue” with political opponents. Chances are that you didn’t feel uncomfortable about the sight of those verbed nouns.“The verbing of nouns is as old as the English language,” says Patricia O’Conner, a former editor at The New York Times Book Review. Experts estimate that 20 percent of all English verbs were originally nouns. And the phenomenon seems to be snowballing. Since 1900, about 40 percent of all new verbs have come from nouns.Even though conversion (转化) is quite universal, plenty of grammarians object to the practice. Some most leading experts, William Strunk Jr. and E. B.White, in The Elements of Style—the Bible for the use of American English—have this to say: “Many nouns lately have been pressed into service as verbs. Not all are bad, but all are questionable.” The Chicago Manual of Style takes a similar standpoint, advising writers to use verbs with great care.“Sometimes people object to a new verb because they resist what is unfamiliar to them,” says O’Conner. That’s why we’re comfortable “hosting” a party, but we might feel upset by the thought of “medaling” in sports. So are there any rules for verbing? Benjamin Dreyer, copy chief at Random House, doesn’t offer a rule, but suggests that people think twice about “verbifying” a noun if it’s easily replaceable by an already existing popular verb. Make sure it’s descriptive but not silly-sounding, he says.In the end, however, style is subjective. Easy conversion of nouns to verbs has been part of English grammar for centuries; it is one of the processes that make English “English”. Not every coined word passes into general use, but as for trying to end verbing altogether, forget it.4.What can we learn about the verbing of nouns?A.It hasn’t recently been opposed by many grammarians.B.It is more commonly accepted by children than adults.C.It hasn’t been a rare phenomenon in the past century.D.It can be easily replaced by existing verbs in practice.5.What is most leading experts’ attitude towards the practice of the verbing of nouns? A.Cautious B.Objective.C.Optimistic.D.Unconcerned.6.What does the author think of ending the verbing of nouns?A.Predictable.B.Practicable.C.Approaching.D.Impossible.7.What is the best title for the text?A.Are 40 Percent of all new verbs from nouns?B.Are Summering and Medaling Annoying?C.Are You Comfortable about a New Verb?D.Are There Any Rules for Verbing?According to a new study, teens focus on rewards and have a hard time learning to avoid punishment or consider the consequences of alternative actions.University College London researchers compared how teens and adults learn to make choices based on the available information. They tracked the way in which 18 volunteers aged 12-17 and 20 volunteers aged 18-32 completed tasks in which they had to choose between abstract symbols. Each symbol was consistently associated with a fixed chance of a reward, punishment, or no outcome. As the trial progressed, participants learned which symbols were likely to lead to each outcome and adjusted their choices accordingly. Teens and adults were equally good at learning to choose symbols associated with reward, but teens were less good at avoiding symbols associated with punishment. Adults also performed significantly better when they were told what would have happened if they had chosen the other symbol after each choice, while teens did not appear to take this information into account.“From this experimental lab study we can draw conclusions about learning during the teen years. We find that teens and adults learn in different ways, something that might be relevant to education,” said lead author Dr. Stefano Palminteri. “Unlike adults, teens are not so good at learning to adjust their choices to avoid punishment. This suggests that incentive systems based on reward rather than punishment may be more effective for this age group. Additionally, we found that teens did not learn from being shown what would have happened if they made alternative choices.”To interpret the results, the researchers developed computational models of learning and ran simulations (模拟) applying them to the results of the study. The first was a simple model, one that learned from rewards, and the second model added to this by also learning from the option that was not chosen. The third model was the most complete and took the full context into account, with equal weight given to punishment avoidance and reward seeking. For example, obtaining no outcome rather than losing a point is weighed equally to gaining a point rather than having no outcome.Comparing the experimental data to the models, the team found that teens’ behavior followed the simple reward-based model while adults’ behavior matched the complete, contextual model. “Our study suggests that teens are more receptive to rewards than they are to punishments of equal value,” said senior author Dr. Sarah-Jayne Blakemore. “As a result, it may be useful for parents and teachers to frame things in more positive terms.”8.It can be learned from the study that .A.adults made choices faster than teensB.adults understood rewards better than teensC.teens reacted better to reward than punishmentD.teens were aware of the outcome of each choice9.What do we know about the three computational models?A.They mainly reflected people’s desire for punishment avoidance.B.They took different situations into consideration.C.They all paid equal attention to reward and punishment.D.They equaled having no outcome to losing a point.10.What is the most possible meaning of the underlined word “receptive” in the last paragraph? A.addicted B.opposedC.resistant D.responsive11.According to the writer, which of the following statements works best for teens?A.“If you insist on doing things in this way, you will lose ten points.”B.“If we had talked about this earlier, you wouldn’t have made the mistake.”C.“If you hand in your assignment ahead of time, you will get an extra award.”D.“If you want to approach a problem differently, you can talk to your parents.”A terrible thing happened to me while I was watching TV recently: I realized that I had aged. Now of course I know that I am aging, it’s just that I hadn’t realized quite how old I was until I saw a participant who I recognized on a reality TV show. Well, I didn’t recognize her but I recognized her name, I’d slightly known her in my 20s when she’d been the celebrity who had stolen my roommates’ boyfriends. However, here’s the thing that shocked me—I hadn’t recognized her because rather than the beauty I remembered, on my TV was a middle-aged mum cooking. And then it hit me: that’s what I look like too. It’s a particularly cruel change of nature that we can’t see ourselves as others do. We see our own face so often that the wrinkles that start to cut through it just go unnoticed. Occasionally we might get a rude awakening when suddenly our bodies stop working as expected but, for the most part, we’re left to get on with growing oreminder...oof many reminders. But when you get a reminder...oof! Since that show aired, I have sat in front of the mirror analyzing my face and wondering how I came to look so like my mother without noticing. I’ve also realized that my waist no longer fits into baby fat but a middle-aged spread.I also fear that I don’t know what middle age looks like for my generation. Did my mother still feel 24 when in reality she was 15 years older? And why do I not feel like I’m where I should be as I approach 40? I definitely remember writing a list of things I will have achieved by the time I’m 40 at 19. Where is the house in the South of France or the Porsche 911 she so desperately wanted?Since then, I’ve started to redefine myself. I don’t want to put everything down to age but I can’t quite stop myself. Tired again? Must be my age. Thank God then for social media. All around me Isee amazing women at the other end of their 40s. They’ve accepted their age and seem to love it, so I’m hopeful that as I move into the next decade that will be me too. And maybe I’ll get the Porsche before I’m 50.12.What is implied in Paragraph 1?A.The author has been friends with the TV celebrity.B.The TV celebrity used to be popular among boys.C.The TV celebrity now lives a life of extreme luxury.D.The aging process doesn’t affect the TV celebrity.13.In most cases, how do we perceive the aging process?A.We clearly know what happens.B.It is very likely to slip our mind.C.We can accept it quite peacefully.D.It always brings about hopelessness.14.The underlined word “that” in the last paragraph refers to .A.a lady denying being old B.the ambitious self aged 19C.a woman accepting her age D.the celebrity on the TV show15.What is the theme of this article?A.It matters not how long we live but how.B.Wrinkles are just evidence of great wisdom.C.Age is a very high price to pay for maturity.D.The best tunes are played on the oldest violins.Human bodies were actually designed for walking, a wonderful form of exercise at no cost. It’s kind to our bodies and great for our waistlines. 16Probably you already love to walk, but you’re getting bored of tracing the same old route day after day, or maybe you’re new to walking and aren’t sure how to get started. 17 Ask yourself, what do you want to get out of walking aside from the health benefits? Do you want to meet other people? See new places? Get out into the countryside or explore a new city? Knowing your goals will help you decide on the type of walk you want to do.Call up your friends and schedule walks with them if socializing is your aim. 18 Many malls have groups that come every day, or every weekend, to “walk the mall”. These groups are always happy to include one more walker!19 Many large cities have incredible gardens and parks that include quiet walking trails getting you off the beaten path. Thanks to the Rails to Trails program, railways across the country are being transformed into scenic walking paths that are a perfect way to seek calmness. From the benefits to your heart to your overall happiness, walking is just plain good for you.20 It’s a fantastic way to get to know a place by the power of your own two feet.A.This month, pick up a map and start walking.B.Ask your friends where they like to walk and just go there.C.You may as well consider heading to a new city for a change.D.Either way, it’s time to accept the idea of walking with a purpose.E.Recently, science has proved that walking is good for your body shape.F.And best of all, it’s a great way to see new things and meet new people!G.If you’re after walking alone, ask about local hikes that get you away from the crowd.二、完形填空(本大题共1小题)My husband and I had an argument last week. You've located the country's capital and one of Europe's most beautiful cities: Madrid. This popular destination is considered a city of contrasts with its abundant historic sites, resting in the shadows of modern skyscrapers.HistoryThis city of over 3 million people is proud of Western Europe's largest royal palace, and some consider it to be Madrid's most beautiful building. Inside the Royal Palace 2,800 rooms are decorated in glory with museum-quality furniture and artworks. Tourists can tour 50 of these large and splendid rooms.ArtThe internationally respected Prado Museum is the largest and most impressive art gallery in Spain. Opened in 1819, it is filled with works of art that feature the world's most comprehensive collection ofSpanish paintings.ShoppingMadrid has some of Europe's best shopping, and potential buyers love to look through the stores looking for bargains. But for 500 years, shoppers have gathered to an extremely large outdoor flea market known as the Rastro where they find everything from antiques to CDs.EntertainmentNo trip to Madrid is complete without seeing a performance of Spain's famous art form, flamenco. Firstly, what confuses me most is the proper use of tenses. I often mix up tenses, leading to low scores on my writings, What’s more, I s truggle to find appropriate wordsto express myself accurately. Despite my massive efforts to expand my vocabulary, words still fail me when I need to write. In addition, I find it difficult to make my writing well-structured and coherent, which frustrates me a lot.I’d appreciate it if you could give me some practical suggestions on my problems. Looking forward to your reply.Yours,Li Hua第二节(满分25分)Before I knew it, I had only one day left for the project. In a panic I quickly glued together whatever materials I could find, my hands shaking with the weight of each hasty decision. The finished result looked miserable. However, several of my classmates, including Nate, had created amazingly detailed buildings. They used materials like clay, wood and so on and their constructions were highly praised by Mr. Smith. When I saw their models, I felt even more embarrassed about mine. It was apparent that they had put a lot more time into the assignment than I had. That taught me a great lesson. I learned from that day the importance of deciding on my priorities and budgeting my time. From then on, I tackled things a lot earlier instead of putting things off until tomorrow. As a result, not only did I finish my tasks ontime, but I also felt better because I didn’t have to panic at the last minute. At the end of the semester, my work was chosen by Mr. Smith on another occasion. Seeing my change, my parents and my sister were so proud of me. It dawned on me that getting things done on time instead of being a procrastinator really counted.听力录音稿Text 1M: Do you have any idea what’s wrong with my houseplant It gets plenty of sun and enough plant food...W: Are you watering it too often Remember this plant comes from the desert where there’s hardly any rain.M: Ah..Maybe that’s the problem!Text 2M: It seems to be human nature to pursue what we don’t have. Tall people want to be shorter, and short people want to be taller... W: I know. For example, when I was younger, my cousin always wanted my golden hair, and I wanted dark hair like hers.Text 3W: Hi, are there any tickets left for tonight’s concertM: Sorry, they’re sold out. But I can put you on the waiting list, in case there are any cancellations tonight. Would you like me to do thatW: Oh, yes, please. Let me give you my phone number.Text 4M: Oh, this is so annoying! We’ve been driving around for ages, and I haven’t seen a single space.W: There’s a street party going on in town today. That’s probably why it’s busy. Let’s try the supermarket... You can park there for free as long as you buy something.Text 5W: So, tell me a little bit about the character you played in your new film Last Weekend.M: Well, Jake is a sort of the ‘everyman’ character. He doesn’t have any special talents. In fact, he lives a pretty boring life, until his old friend Maggie returns to town...Text 6M: Can I borrow your phone for a second Mine is dead, and I can’t find my charger.W: Sure.M: Thanks. Hey, what’s wrong with your screen It’s all dark and the colors look strange.W: Oh! I’ve been using an app called “Sunset” to help me sleep at night.M: Really HowW: Well, studies show that too much blue light from screens can make sleeping difficult. So, in the evenings, the app puts a red filter (滤光器) over the screen to cancel it out.M: Oh, interesting. Does it helpW: Yeah, I think so! I also listen to white noise, which helps me fall asleep too.Text 7M: Can we do something about the temperature in here I have so many emails to deal with today, but my hands are so cold that I can hardly type my report!W: I know. I’ve been struggling too. But the heat probably won’t be turned on until the end of the month.M: Why notW: It’s a part of the company’s plans to save energy.M: Well, I can understand that. But how are we supposed to work in these conditionsW: I guess we always have the choice to work from home.M: True. But before my youngest daughter starts school, it’s just too difficult for me to do that. I wouldn’t be able to focus.W: Then I think we should talk to the boss about what can be done, otherwise people will start getting ill.Text 8W: Well, here we are! I can’t wait to get inside and see what’s on offer!M: I heard this year’s Mini Fair is going to be even bigger and better than last year’s. It won’t disappoint us.W: Oh really I had to go to a boring work event at that time, so I couldn’t come last year.M: Yes! I got so many things for my model train set.W: Like whatM: Well, the coolest things I got were some tiny little trees. They looked so real.W: Wow!M: I’m hoping t he guy who sells them is here again this year.W: I hope so! Now that I’m satisfied with the inside part of my dolls’ house, I want to focus on creating the garden. So, it would be great to get some little plants and trees. What about youM: I want some little model cars and people to add to my train station scene. But I need to find a toilet first.W: Over there, by the restaurant hall.M: Great. Meet you in five minutes, by the ticket desk.Text 9W: Hi, are you here for the tourM: Yes, I’m Michael Green. Are you the head girlW: That’s right. I’m Jayne Palmer. You look a bit older than the kids I usually show around the school!M: Ha-ha! Yeah, I’ll be sixteen next month.W: My birthday is in October, too!M: ReallyW: Yeah! So, why are you changing schoolsM: Well, my mom got a new job in this area, so we’re moving here. I’ve heard good things about this place.W: Well, as you can see, we have some great facilities... Here are the basketball courts. Then just behind them, you’ll see the football field and the running track. And that building over there is our swimming pool.M: Wow! There wasn’t room for anything like this at my previous school. I was on the swimming team, but we had to travel to use the city pool for our practices.W: Well, we’ve certainly got plenty of space. The arts teaching here is also excellent. We have a music studio and our own theater. M: Amazing!W: So, where would you like to go firstM: Well, I’m quite interested to see the science facilities. I’m hoping for a career in medicine.W: Okay, great! Well, the laboratories have all been updatedrecently, so we’ve got some really good equipment. Follow me. Text 10On my recent business trip to Shanghai, I met up with a local friend who took me out for a very interesting evening meal. At the Community AI Canteen, everything is done by robots. When you walk in there, you place your order on a screen. Using robotic arms, the intelligent cooking system then cooks your food before packing it up... It even adjusts the temperature, depending on whether you want to eat it straight away or take it home with you! To pay, you place your food on a smart cash desk, which immediately calculates (计算) the cost. There’s even a 24-hour noodle machine just outside, which offers hot and fresh food around the clock. The canteen offers a huge amount of choices and the dishes taste great. It is really fun to get “a taste of the future”. However, I’m not sure I would like all restaurants to be run by robots. I can see the benefits for busy families or office workers needing a quick lunch, but what about lonely older people who would miss the human touch I do think we will see more places like this in the future, though. At best, a human waiter can serve around 100 people in a day. The AI system can serve double that figure, making it good for business.荆州中学2024-2025学年高二上学期9月月考英语试题命题人:审题人:(全卷满分150分考试时间120分钟)第一部分听力(共两节,满分30分)第一节(共5小题;每小题1.5分,满分7.5分)听下面5段对话。
