Protestantism is the Western religion I most identify with. On the one hand, Protestantism is humanitarian and simplifiedcompared with Catholicism. On the other hand, there are many enlightened and progressivedoctrines. What’s more, many scientists, philosophers and astronomers are greatly influenced by Protestantism, and we can say Protestantism has greatly promoted the Western civilization. Another reason I like Protestantism is that there are many interesting western traditional festivals and practices related to Protestantism. For example, every protestants will go to church on Sunday and we are able to think about the things we have done in the past six days in a peaceful and solemnenvironment, and we are able to have a introspection about our wrong behaviors or bad habits and pray for forgiveness. As for holidays, we can see that most of the famous and international western holidays we already know are related to Protestantism. Moreover, most western holidays has an origin. For example, Christmas is an annual commemoration of the birth of Jesus Christ and a widely observed holiday, celebrated generally on December 25by millions of people around the world. A feast central to the Christian liturgical year, it closes the Advent season and initiates the twelve days of Christmastide, which ends after the twelfth night.Christmas is a civil holiday in many of the world's nations, which is celebrated by an increasing number of non-Christians, and is an integral part of the Christmas and holiday season.Halloween is another interesting one, and it is also known as AllHallows' Eve. It is a yearly celebration observed in a number of countries on October 31, the eve of the Western Christian feast of All Hallows (or All Saints) and the day initiating the celebration of Hallowmas.Catholicism may be the one that doesn’t appeal me. I have learned so many things about Catholicism in the middle ages and it’sdespotism and brutality really make me feel horrified.。

Halloween[ˌhæləʊˈi:n].Halloween[ˌhæləʊˈi:n]is a yearly celebration observed in a number of countries onOctober 31, the eve of the Western Christian feast(盛会)of All Hallows。

In this holiday ,there are some traditional activities and food.Trick-or-treating is a customary celebration for children on Halloween[ˌhæləʊˈi:n].Children go in costume from house to house, asking for treats such as candy or sometimes money, with the question, "Trick or treat?" The word "trick" refers to a "threat" to perform mischief(恶作剧)on the homeowners or their property if no treat is given.Halloween [ˌhæləʊˈi:n]costume [ˈkɔstju:m]parties generally fall on or aroundOctober 31, often on the Friday or Saturday before Halloween. Halloween costumes are traditionally modeled after supernatural figures such as monsters, ghosts [ɡəusts], witches, and devils. Over time, the costume selection extended to includepopular characters from fiction, celebrities and so on.Because Halloween comes in the wake of the yearly apple harvest, candy applescaramel[ˈkærəmel](焦糖)or taffy (乳脂)apples are common .Halloween treats made by rolling whole apples in a sticky sugar syrup[ˈsirəp](糖浆), sometimes followed by rolling them in nuts(坚果). One custom that persists in modern-day Ireland is the baking(烘烤)of a barmbrack[ˈbɑ:mbræk](果子面包), which is a light fruitcake, into which a plain ring, a coin and other charms(小装饰品)are placedbefore baking. It is said that those who get a ring will find their true love in the ensuing[enˈsju:ɪŋ](接着发生的)year.发展和分化Christianity began as a Jewish[ˈdʒu:ɪʃ] sect in the mid-1st century. Then it quickly grew in size and influence over a few decades, and by the 4th century had become the dominant religion within the Roman [rɔmə] Empire. During the Middle Ages, most of the remainder of Europe was Christianized, with Christians also being a sometimes large religious minority in the Middle East, North Africa ,parts of India and so on. Following the Age of Discovery,Christianity spread to the Americas, Australasia[ˌɔstrəˈleiʒjə], and the rest of the world. Christianity, therefore, is a major influence in the shaping of Western civilization. At present there are three largest groups in the world of Christianity ——the Roman Catholic Church, the Eastern Orthodox [ˈɔ:θədɔks]churches, and the various churches of Protestantism[ˈprɔtɪstənˌtɪzəm]. The Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox [ˈɔ:θədɔks] split from one another in the East-West Schism[ˈsɪzəm(分支) of 1054 AD, and Protestantism[ˈprɔtɪstənˌtɪzəm] came into existence during the Protestant Reformation of the 16th century, splitting from the Roman Catholic Church.SymbolsThe cross, which is today one of the most widely recognised symbols in the world, was used as a Christian symbol from the earliest times. Although the cross was known to the early Christians, the crucifix[ˈkru:səˌfɪks](耶稣钉在十字架上的苦像) did not appear in use until the 5th century.Christians from the very beginning adorned their tombs[tu:mz] with paintings of Christ, of the saints [seint], of scenes from the Bible and so on. The catacombs [ˈkætəkəum](地下墓穴)are the cradle(摇篮)of all Christian art. The first Christians had no prejudice against images, pictures, or statues.Among the symbols employed by the primitive Christians, that of the fish seems to have ranked first in importance. The fish was depicted as a Christian symbol in the first decades of the 2nd century. Its popularity among Christians was due to the famous consisting of the initial letters of five Greek [gri:k] words forming the word for fish (Ichthys), which words briefly but clearly described the character of Christand the claim to worship of believers(: Iesous Christos Theou Yios Soter, meaning, Jesus Christ, Son of God, Saviour.)Other major Christian symbols include the chi-rho monogram[ˈmɔnəuɡræm](字母组合), the dove[dʌv](鸽) , the sacrificial lamb [læm](神的), and many others.。

Christianity基督教

Christianity基督教This is the major religion in the West.It was originally the Jewish犹太 religion. Later it was given structure by the Romans, so the oldest Christian church is called the Roman Catholic Church. The leader of this church is called The Pope, and he still lives in Rome. The Catholic Church was resisted by the Protestants hundreds of years ago. King Henry VIII is the famous English king (with 6 wives) who began the Church of England to fight Catholic religious rule.Today there are many different churches, but the basic book is called The Bible, and they all follow ten simple laws called The Ten Commandments. The 10 commandments诫命1 Always look for the real truth.2 Never pretend 假装 your own limited 有限 knowledge is the real truth.3Don’t pretend that talking about the real truth makes you more important than the next person.4 Work for 6 days, and then rest for 1 day.5 Respect your mother and father.6Don’t kill anyone.7 Only have sex with your husband or wife.8Don’t steal.9Don’t tell lies about other people.10Don’t desire what other people have.Christianity also has one simple central rule called The Golden Rule:“Do to others what you hope they would do to you.”This is similar to the Chinese:"What you do not wish for yourself, do not do to others.” 孔夫子The Bible is a kind of cultural history, and tells many stories. The central figure in these Christian stories is Jesus Christ, also known as the Lord, or the King of the Jews.Christians say he represents 标志 the way to find God.Non-Christians can say he represents the perfect person. The Bible story says Jesus was born in a very poor little house used to keep sheep warm during winter. 3 Wise Men, kings in their countries, followed a bright star to visit him in his little home. They brought rich gifts and gave him great respect. This is the time we call Christmas. His mother, Mary, had never had sex, so she is known as the Virgin Mary, which made both her and her son Jesus very unusual.Jesus grew up as a poor man, and began to tell parables (stories that tell a lesson). The most famous of these parables is…..The Good Samaritan. One day a man, a Jew, was attacked by robbers, who beat him and took everything he had.As the man lay bleeding 鲜血 and in pain, a priest (religious leader) arrived, but he went to the other side of the street and did not stop. Then, a Levite (another religious group friendly to the Jews) came, but he also did not want to help. Then a Samaritan, an enemy of the Jews, came. This man felt sorry for the Jew, and stopped. He gave the hurt man medical help, took him to a hotel, and paid for the room, even though they were enemies. The story teaches us that people must be helped when they are in trouble, even if we do not like their ideas and ways of living. The Good Samaritan was a better friend and neighbour than the Jew’s own people. Jesus was eventually put up on a cross十字架 and left to die. The strong central idea Christians have is that he died to bring people closer to the real truth – whatever you think that is.。

Christianity Development in Britain1. 英国基督教简介2. 英国基督教发展历程3. 英国基督教改革There are Three main world religions: Buddhism, Islam, and Christianity. The official and predominant religion is Christianity with 71% believers in Britain. Most Christians belong to the two established Protestant churches: the Church of England (Anglican英国国教) or the Church of Scotland (Presbyterian长老教-苏格兰国教)Decline of Religious Beliefs in Britain: It is impossible to understand the British society and culture without understanding the role of the church. But religion has suffered an immense decline since the 1950s. Today only a minority just over 6% of the population go to any kind of church regularly, partly due to the advancement of science and the general improvement in social conditions and the variety of modern entertainment. In the 4th century AD, before the period when Roman predominated in Britain, some of Christianity's influence has spread to the British Isles, but has not spread. 432 years ago, the St. Patrick's promotion of Ireland converted to Christianity, his followers began in Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland converted to Christianity. The end of the century 6, Saxons in southern of England encouraged by their rulers and promoted conversion to Christianity began, and established the history of that religion in England contact between the countries firstly. In the year of 664 there held a religious meeting in the White and agreement the General Assembly, all churches have agreed to adopt the ritual of the Roman Catholic ChurchIn the 16th century, Europe experienced a tremendous impact on the Reformation. And we must say a people Henry VIII.There was an inevitable conflict between the Roman Catholic Church and the King of English who had established an absolute monarchy. The resentment among the people toward the power of the Pope and the church was also growing because the English suspected that a large part of their wealth was taken to Roma and there was serious corruption in the church, however, the immediate cause for the Religious Reformation was King Henry VIII’s Attempt to divorce his first wife, Catherine of Aragon. At that time, the only person who could grant a divorce was the Pope. Yet Pope would never allow Henry to divorce his wife. Thus, Henry VIII started the Reformation movement by declaring a break with Rome. He carried out a wholesale suppression of the monasteries and confiscated the property of the church, In 1534 he issued the ACT OF SUPREMACY and declared himself to be the :only supreme head of the church of England “ The Reformations was in essence a political movement in a religious guise.)For half a century the whole island went through the Reformation under Henry VIII and the Counter_Reformation led by his daughter and heir, Mary I, The bloody religious came to a stop after the church settlement executed by Queen Elizabeth I .she was inclined to support the Protestants, but she tried her best to make peace by appeasing the Catholics., Although working for a compromise between religious faction, she defended the fruit of the Reformation in essence. To moderate the Catholics’ anger, She dropped the words” head of the Church “from the royal title. under her reign the Church of England (also called the Anglican Church )was consolidated and it is still known as the National Church。

The Introduction of Christianity Those churches who regard Jesus as the Christ are called Christianity. It includes Roman Catholicism, Orthodox Church, Protestantism, and some other lesser churches. Christianity, Buddhism, and Islam are known as the word’s three major religions. And Christianity is the biggest religion in the world because of the number of faith and the areas of influence. According to its generation and development, Christianity approximately goes through four stages: the early Christianity, the ancient Church, the medieval Church, and the modern Church. In my paper, firstly, I’ll mainly talk about the early Church, and then I’ll briefly describe the four stages.Christianity originated in the Jewish. First, let us learn about the Jewish’s situation when the Christianity originated. In the Roman Empire era, mostly Jewish lived in Palestinian. They believed Judaism, and they believed God was their only God. Therefore, the Jews did not conformity with the Gods of ancient Rome, nor recognized the divinity of the Roman emperors. Some emperors in the early period were more tolerant, especially Caesar, Wu Dewey, and Key Lodi. They permitted the Jews believed their religion, and the Jews also prayed for them in their own pantheon. Until the BC 1960s, Palestinian became one of Rome’s provinces, and it was ruled by the Jewish king assigned by the Roman emperor. BC 4 years, the Rome Governors ruled the Palestinian directly. The Jews hoped they could be independent again. Therefore they revolted to the Rome many times in AD 66 years to AD 135 years, but all failed. And after be defeated, they suffered worse suppressed. Because the many failures of insurgences, people felt helpless, so they pinned their hope on religion. They hoped there would appear a Redeemer to help them to be out of the painful life. Those reflected their disappointment to the fighting life in the reality, and they turn in the religious spirit in seeking a way out, in order to shake off its desperate situation. At that time, Jesus appearing, bringing gospel of God, he sacrificed himself to save people. Jesus recruited twelve disciples during his missionary process. Three years later, he was nailed on cross to death, in order to atone for people’s crime. After his death, his disciples started to preach with Jerusalem as the center, and establishing some early churches. Those were called the early Christianity. During this period, Christianity was divided into two phrases. The first phrase was the original Christianity and the second phra se was the original Christianity’s development. The early Catholics mostly are poor people, slaves, and the released slaves, so the political thought of the original Christianity strongly rejected the rule of Rome and hated the rich group. They even claimed to overthrow the rule of Rome, realize the ideal kingdom in the real world. So Rome regarded Christianity as a hostile power to suppress cruelly. Later, with some rich people taking part in it, Christianity’s social composition and economic conditions had changed, and the influence to upper RomanEmpire also had expanded. Furthermore, because the church advocated new idea later which included pinning hope in afterlife, loyal to the country, and obeying to the owner, so, in AD 135 years, the Roman emperor, Constantine I, promulgated the “Edict of Milan” to give the legal status to the Christianity. Until AD 392 years, the Roman Empire declared that Christianity was the Roman Empire’s state religion. Depend on the status of state religion, the Church and the Catholics were founded everywhere in Rome. And so Christianity became a control tool for the exploiting class. To this point in time, Christianity ended the period of the early Christianity, went to the ancient Church.Judaism to become a new Church. With the development and change of Rome, Christianity also changed a lot. At last, it mainly formed three sects.Next, I’ll introduce the main religious ceremonies of Christianity. Christianity’s main religious ceremonies are baptism, repenting, the Eucharist, and marriage.Baptism is a ceremony for converting the Christianity. The priest could drop some water on the head of the believer, or let the believer in the water for a moment. This is the sacrament made by Jesus. By holding the Baptism, the believer could be pardoned his original sin.Repenting is a ceremony that the Catholics tell the sins they made to the God, show their regre t, and beg the God’s pardon. The Eucharist is the cake and wine for celebrating the ceremony. When the Catholics prepare to pray, the priest will let the Catholics take the Eucharist. Based on the doxy of Christianity, the Catholics think the Eucharist rep resents Jesus’ flesh and blood, so, if they take the Eucharist, it symbolizes that they get the halo from Jesus, Marriages means when the Catholics marry, they must hold their marriage ceremony in the church. In the church, by the clergy officiating, the couple holds their marriage ceremony based on the formal rules, so as to pray the God’s blessing. Finally, in my paper, I’ll relate two main festivals of Christianity. The most important festival is the Christmas. It is on December 25 every year. Christmas is a feast to commemorate the birth of Jesus. On Christmas Eve, every family would decorate the Christmas tree. They hung the colorful lights, little bells, and all kinds of gifts on the tree. Everybody dance around the Christmas tree hand in hand, share the Christmas cake, and the children except the Santa Claus to send gifts. And another feast is Easter, which is on the first Sunday after March 15 every year. Easter is a festival to remember Jesus came to life again after he was nailed on the cross. The Easter Egg is the most important symbolic food on Easter, it means the life of beginning and renewal.JoannaYe Caiqin0607024“T he Everything Christianity Book”——Michael F. Russell, M.
