However, a closer look at their reasons for studying at the university will enables us to classify them roughly into three groups: those who have a passion for learning, those who wish to attain a bright future, and those who learn with no definite purpose.Firstly, there are many students who learn simply because they pursue their goal of learning. Some read a wealth of British and American novels because they are keenly interested in literature. Others sit in front of the computer screen, working on a new program, virtually day and night, because they find some computer programs fascinating, and they dream of becoming a “Bill Gates” one day. Secondly, there are students who work hard mainly for a better and more prosperous future. It seems that the majority of students fall into this group. After admission to the university, they read books after books to acquire knowledge from all the resources which are available to them, and finally, to succeed in the future job market.Thirdly, there are still some students who learn without a clear goal. They take courses, finish homework, enjoy life on campus, but don’t want to sample anything new or challenging. They have no idea what they will be doing after college. And they may end up with nothing in their lives.26. Which of the following statements is WRONG?A. College students learn for different purposes.B. Each passage is followed by five questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. Choose the best one and mark your answer on the ANSWER SHEET with a single bar through the center of the letter.Passage OneChildren in the United States are exposed to many influences other than that of their families. Television is the most significant of these influences, because the habit of watching television usually begins before children start attending school.Parents are concerned about the lack of quality in television programs for children. The degree of violence in many of these shows also worries them. Studies indicate that, when children are exposed to violence, they may become aggressive or insecure. Parents are also concerned about the commercials that their children see on television. Many parents would like to see fewer commercials during programs for children. And some parents feel that these shows should not have any commercials at all because young minds are not mature enough to deal with the claims made by advertisers.Educational television has no commercials and has programs for children that many parents approve of. The most famous of these is Sesame Street, which tries to give preschool children a head start in learning the alphabet (字母) and numbers. It also tries to teach children useful things about the world in which they live.Even though most parents and educators give Sesame Street and shows like it high marks for quality, some critics argue that all television, whether educational or not, is harmful to children. These critics feel that the habit of watching hours of television every day turns children into bored and passive(被动的) consumers of their world rather than encouraging them to become active explorers of it.11. Which of the following statements is NOT based on the passage?A. Parents are worried about the influence from television on their children.B. Television has much influence on children.C. Both parents and their children like watching educational television.D. Some critics think that television is no good for children.2. In what ways do children suffer from television?A. They become the victims of social violence.B. They spend hours watching television instead of doing school work.C. The programs make the children lose interest in the world.D. The programs make the children spend too much of their parents’ mone y.13. Parents would not like their children to see commercials because __________.A. they think that their children are not old enough to handle advertising.B. commercials teach children alphabet and numbersC. commercials help to sell productsD. they don' t like commercials14. Educational television is widely appreciated because _________.A. it does have the same commercials as othersB. it offers programs for both children and their parentsC. many parents like the programs it offers for their childrenD. children can learn some school subjects before they go to school15. Which of the following can best serve as the title of the passage?A. Watching Too Much Television May Be Harmful to Young MindsB. Television Is More Harmful than EducationalC. Television’s Influence on ChildrenD. More Educational TelevisionPassage TwoToday just as technology changed the face of industry, farms have undergone an "agricultural revolution". On the farm of today, machines provide almost all the power. One of the most important benefits will be the farm computer. A few forward-looking farmers are already using computers to help them run their farms more efficiently. The computers help them keep more accurate records, so they can make better decisions on what crops to plant, how much livestock to buy, when to sell their products, and how much profit they can expect. Many computer companies have been developing special computer programs just for farmers. Programs are being written for hog producers, grain farmers, potato farmers, and dairy farmers. In the future, farmers will be able to purchase computer programs made to their needs. Because of the growing importance of computers on the farm, students at agricultural colleges are required to take computer classes in addition to their normal agricultural courses. There can be no doubt that farmers will rely on computers even more in the future. While the old-time farm depended on horse power, and modern farms depend on machine power, farms of the future will depend on computer power.Another technological advance which is still in the experimental stage is the robot, a real “mechanized hired hand" that will be able to move and, in some ways, think like a human being. Agricultural engineers believe that computer-aided robots will make startling changes in farming before the end of the century. Unlike farmers of the present, farmers of the future will find that many day-to-day tasks will be done for them. Scientists are now developing robots that will be able to shear sheep, drive tractors, and harvest fruit. Even complex jobs will be done by robots. For example, in order to milk their cows, farmers must first drive them into the barn, then connect them to the milking machines, watch the machines, and disconnect them when they are finished. In the future, this will all be done by robots. In addition, when the milking is completed, the robots will automatically check to make sure that the milk is pure. The complete mobilization of the farm is far in the future, but engineers expect that some robots will be used before long.16. Which sentence is the main idea of the whole passage?A. The first sentence of the first paragraph.B. The first sentence of the second paragraph.C. The first sentence of the third paragraph.D. The last sentence of the second paragraph.17. According to the passage, computers can not help farmers decide __________.A. how much money they can earn from their products.B. whether to plant a certain kind of cropC. what livestock to raiseD. when to sell their products18. Which of the following statements is true?A. Farmers in the future will depend totally on computers.B. Both computers and robots have been in use on today's farms.C. Farmers mainly use machines on their farms at present.D. Students at agricultural colleges must take computer classes because they can do nothing without the help of computers on today’s farms.19. According to the engineers, ___________ will be done by robots in the near future.A. most of the farm workB. milking cowsC. all farm workD. all the work20. What is the best title for the whole passage?A. Computer, Farmers' best FriendB. Farmers in the FutureC. Computers and RobotsD. The Agricultural RevolutionPassage ThreeAn idea that started in Seattle's public library has spread throughout America and beyond. The concept is simple: help to build a sense of community in a city by getting everyone to read the same book at the same time.In addition to encouraging reading as a pursuit (追求) to be enjoyed by all, the program allows strangers to communicate by discussing the book on the bus, as well as promoting reading as an experience to be shared in families and schools. The idea came from Seattle librarian Nancy Pearl who launched the "If All of Seattle Read the Same Book" project in 1998. Her original program used author visits, study guides and book discussion groups to bring people together with a book, but the idea has since expanded to many other American cities, and even to Hong Kong.In Chicago, the mayor appeared on television to announce the choice of To Kill a Mockingbird as the first book in the "One Book, One Chicago" program. As a result, reading clubsand neighborhood groups sprang up around the city. Across the US, stories emerged of parents and children reading to each other at night and strangers chatting away on the bus about the plot and characters. The only problem arose in New York, where local readers could not decide on one book to represent the huge and diverse population. This may show that the idea works best in medium-sized cities or large towns, where a greater sense of unity can be achieved. Or it may show that New Yorkers rather missed the point, putting all their energy and passion into the choice of the book rather than discussion about a book itself.Ultimately, as Nancy points out, the level of success is not measured by how many people read a book, but by how many people are enriched by the process or have enjoyed speaking to someone with whom they would not otherwise have shared a word.21. What is the purpose of the project launched by Nancy?A. To invite authors to guide readers.B. To encourage people to read and share.C. To involve people in community service.D. To promote the friendship between cities.22. Why was it difficult for New Yorkers to carry out the project?A. They had little interest in reading.B. They were too busy to read a book.C. They came from many different backgrounds.D. They lacked support from the local government.23. According to the passage, where would the project be more easily carried out?A. In large communities with little sense of unity.B. In large cities where libraries are far from home.C. In medium-sized cities with a diverse population.D. In large towns where agreement can be quickly reached.24. In telephone surveys (调查), Neal Roese(尼尔罗斯), a psychologist(心理学家)and professor (教授)of marketing (营销)at the School ofmanagement at Northwestern(西北大学)UniverSity, and Mike Morrison, a doctoral candidate (候选人)in psychology (心理学)at University of Illinois, asked 370 Americans, aged 19 to 103, to talk about their most notable(值得注意的)regret(后悔). Participants (参与者)were asked what the regret was, when it happened, whether it was a result of (结果)something they did or didn't do, and whether it was something that could still (仍然)be fixed.(固定的)The most commonly(通常的)mentioned regrets(提到遗憾)involved romance (浪漫的事) (18%)——lost loves or unfulfilled(不满意)relationships. Family regrets came in second (16%), with people still feeling badly about being unkind(不友善)to their brothers or sisters in childhood. Other frequently (频繁地)reported regrets involved career(卷入职业)(13%), education (12%), money (10%) and parenting (9%).Roese and Morrison's study, which is to be published in Social Psychological(心理)and Personality(人格)Science, is significant(重要的)in that it surveyed(调查)a wide range of the American public, including people of all ages and socio-economic(社会经济)and educational backgrounds. (80) Many participants also reported wishing they had worked less to spend more time with their children. There was an even split(分裂)between regrets about inaction (not doing something) and action (doing something you wish you didn't). But, like previous(以前的)studies, the current research(以前研究)found that some regrets are more likely than others to persist over time: people tend to hang on (坚持)longer to the regret of inaction; meanwhile(同时), regrets of action tend to be more recent.11. He spent the summer traveling in Europe, working with Adidas on his latest basketball shoe and playing with Team U.S.A. in an Olympic qualifying game. He also spent countless hours in the gym. “I work on things every day in the off-season, ”says McGrady, 24, an All-Star guard with the National Basketball Association‟s Orlando Magic. Until McGrady was 17, few outside his tiny hometown knew of his skills. He was raised mostly by his grandmother in a rough part of town. Sports were his escapes. To gain more exposure for his basketball skills, McGrady transferred to play his senior season at Mount Zion Christian Academy in North Carolina. After leading the Mighty Warriors to a 26-2 record that season, McGrady was named Player of the Year by a national newspaper. At 18, McGrady was starring for Toronto by the end of his new players‟ season. But he wanted to become one of the NBA‟s elite (精英), so he hired a trainer and beban intense workouts. It‟s not uncommon for McGrady, who signed with Orlando in 2002, to shoot 200 jumpers after practice, grab a healthy bite to eat and go to work out with the Los Angeles Lakers‟ Shaquille O‟Neal, who owns a home in Orlando. “He‟s stayed at a high level, ”Orlando coach Doc Rivers says of McGrady. “A lot of young players can play a good 20 minutes, or have a great month. Tracy does it all season on both ends.” To be that goood takes a lot of work. To be better takes even more. McGrady is ready for the challenge, because he knows what he wants. “I don‟t want to be one of those players that‟s known for being a great player that never won a championship, ”McGrady says. “I want a title.”16.Whnich of the following teams has McGrady NOT so far played for? The sentence “Sports were his escapes ”(Line 2, Paragraph 2) can best mean that _________.a. sporting activities were the means for him to get fullest happiness by B. physical exercises were the only way to relieve him of his pains C. he didn‟t want to do more things than sportiveactivities D. sports enabled him to run away from his hometownPassage TwoLast December‟s earthquakes in the Iranian city of Bam took a huge death toll-roughly 40,000 people-largely because of the collapse of thousands of mud-brick buildings, If a group of researchers in India are successful, the earthquake might not be as destructive. British and Indian engineers are developing earthquake-proof housing using a cheap, universal material:bamboo. They designed a model house built around waterproof bamboo-sheet roofing and bamboo-reinforced concrete walls. To test the structure , the engineers , sponsored by the U.K. Department of International Development, took it to the Earthquake Engineering and Vibration Research Centre in Bangalore, which has a state-of-the-art earthquake simulator(模拟装置)。

A great difference between American social customs and those of other countries is the way in which names are used. Americans have little concern for “rank”, especially socially. Most Americans do not want to be treated in any especially respectful way because of their age or social rank; it makes them feel uncomfortable. Many Americans even find the terms “Mr.”, “Mrs” or “Miss” too formal. People of all ages may prefer to be called by their first names. “Don’t call me Mrs Smith. Just call me Sally.” Usin g only first names usually indicates friendliness and acceptance. However, if you do not feel comfortable using only first names, it is quite acceptable to be more formal. Just smile and say that after a while you will use first names but you are accustomed to being more when you first meet someone.
Very often, introductions are made using both first and last names: “ Mary Smith, this is John Jones.” In this situation you are free to decide whether to call the lady “Mary” or “Miss Smith”. Sometimes both of you will begin a conversation using last names, and after a while one or both of you may begin using first names instead. You have a choice: if you don’t want to use first names so quickly, no one will think it impolite if you continue according to you own custom.
