Can you guess what the text s in this unit are going to be about? The following words in the recording may be new to you:monstern. 怪物prayern. 祈祷Part IIText AWhen we are writing we are often told to keep our readers in mind, to shape what we say to fit their tastes and interests. But there is one reader in particular who should not be forgotten. Can you guess who? surprised himself and everyone else when he discovered the answer.WRITING FOR MYSELFRussell BakerThe idea of becoming a writer had come to me off and on since my childhood in Belleville, but it wasn't until my third year in high school that the possibility took hold. Until then I'd been bored by everything associated with English course s. I found English grammar dull and difficult. I hated the assignments to turn out long, lifeless paragraphs that were agony for teachers to read and for me to write. When our class was assigne d to Mr. Fleagle for third-year English I anticipate d another cheerless year in that most tediousof subjects. Mr. Fleagle had a reputation among students for dullness and inability to inspire. He was said to be very formal, rigid and hopelessly out of date. To me he looked to be sixty or seventy and excessively prim. He wore primly severe eyeglasses, his wavy hair was primly cut and primly comb ed. He wore prim suits with necktie s set primly against the collar button s of his white shirts. He had a primly pointed jaw, a primly straight nose, and a prim manner of speaking that was so correct, so gentlemanly, that he seemed a comic antique.I prepared for an unfruitful year with Mr. Fleagle and for a long time was not disappointed. Late in the year we tackle d the informal essay. Mr. Fleagle distribute d a homework sheet offering us a choice of topic s. None was quite so simple-minded as "What I Did on My Summer Vacation," but most seemed to be almost as dull. I took the list home and did nothing until the night before the essay was due(到期的).Lying on the sofa, I finally faced up to the unwelcome task, took the list out of my notebook, and scan ned it. The topic on which my eye stopped was "The Art of Eating Spaghetti."This title produced an extraordinary sequence of mental image s.in Bellevillewhen all of us were seated around the supper table —Uncle Allen, my mother, Uncle Charlie, Doris, Uncle Hal — and Aunt Pat serve d spaghetti for supper. Spaghetti was still a little known foreign dish in those days. Neither Doris nor I had ever eaten spaghetti, and none of the adults had enough experience to be good at it. All the good humor of Uncle Allen's house reawoke in my mind as I recall ed the laughing argument s we had that night about the socially respectable method for moving spaghetti from plate to mouth.Suddenly I wanted to write about that, about the warmth and good feeling of it, but I wanted to put it down simply for my own joy, not for Mr. Fleagle. It was a moment I wanted to recapture and hold for myself. I wanted to relive the pleasure of that evening. To write it as I wanted, however, would violate all the rules of formal composition I'd learned in school, and Mr. Fleagle would surely give it a failing grade. Never mind. I would write something else for Mr. Fleagle after I had written this thing for myself. When I finished it the night was half gone and there was no time left to compose a proper, respectable essay for Mr. Fleagle. There was no choice next morning but to turn in my tale of theBelleville supper. Two days passed before Mr. Fleagle returned the graded papers, and he returned everyone's but mine. I was preparing myself for a command to report to Mr. Fleagle immediately after school for discipline when I saw him lift my paper from his desk and knock for the class's attention."Now, boys," he said. "I want to read you an essay. This is titled, 'The Art of Eating Spaghetti.'"And he started to read. My words! He was reading my words out loud to the entire class. What's more, the entire class was listening. Listening attentively. Then somebody laughed, then the entire class was laughing, and not in contempt and ridicule, but with open-hearted enjoyment. Even Mr. Fleagle stopped two or three times to hold back a small prim smile.I did my best to avoid show ing pleasure, but what I was feeling was pure delight at this demonstration that my words had the power to make people laugh. In the eleventh grade, at the eleventh hour as it were, I had discovered a calling. It was the happiest moment of my entire school career. When Mr. Fleagle finished he put the final seal on my happiness by saying, "Now that(连用有既然之意,但此处非连用), boys, is an essay, don'tyou see. It's — don't you see —Congratulation s, Mr. Baker."(797 words)New Words and Expressionsoff and onfrom time to time; sometimes 断断续续地;有时possibilityn. 可能(性)take holdbecome established生根,确立borevt. make (sb.) become tired and lose interest 使(人)厌烦associatevt. join or connect together; bring in the mind 使联系起来;使联想assignmentn. a piece of work that is given to a particular person(分配的)工作,任务,作业turn outproduce 编写;生产,制造agony▲n. very great pain or suffering of mind or body (身心的)极度痛苦assignvt. give as a share or duty 分配,分派anticipatevt. expect 预期,期望tediousa. boring and lasting for a long time 乏味的;冗长的reputationn. 名声;名誉inabilityn. lack of power, skill or ability 无能,无力inspirevt. fill (sb.) with confidence, eagerness, etc. 激励,鼓舞formala. Note
An all-hands meeting is one that is held with everyone who works within a company. It tends to be held when there is important information that needs to be communicated to a large group of employees, as this allows information to be passed on to everyone at the same time.
Dustin was chosen as the new CEO, with 95% of the votes.
Successful candidates need to be supported by at least 2/3 of all stakeholders.
If nobody receives the required number of votes, the previous person stays on for another 6 months
翻译
Can Employees Decide an Organization’s Leadership?
Today the leadership election process looks quite different.
The CEO starts the process by proposing an organizational structure for the next year with a public document, sharing a vision for the future and what would be needed in terms of leadership positions. Everyone is able to question the necessity of any position. Once the positions are defined, everyone can apply, or propose someone else. One month before an election, the people who are up for the position introduce themselves and their ideas. Successful candidates need to be supported by at least 2/3 of all stakeholders. If nobody receives the required number of votes, the previous person stays on for another six months, and then a new election would be held.

Grammar Exercises1. TensesUse of simple past tense:1) The simple past tense is used to talk about completed actions and habits in the past.e.g. Shakespeare died in 1616.We used to walk a mile in the morning when we were in London.2) Past tense of verbs such as want, wonder, hope is used for polite inquiries.e.g. I wondered how you liked the film.Use of past progressive:1) The past progressive indicates a limited duration of time and is thus a convenient way toindicate that something took place (in the simple past) while something else was happening.e.g. Carlos lost his watch while he was running.2) The past progressive can express incomplete action.e.g. I was sleeping on the couch when Bertie smashed through the door.※as opposed to the simple past, which suggests a completed actione.g. I slept on the couch last night.3) The past progressive is also used to poke fun at or criticize an action that is sporadic buthabitual in nature.e.g. Tashonda was always handing in late papers.4) We use the past progressive of verbs such as wonder to show politeness.e.g.I was wondering if you could give me a lift.※This use is even more poli te and tentative than the simple past.Use of past perfect tense:1) The past perfect tense expresses the idea that something occurred before another action in thepast. It can also show that something happened before a specific time in the past.e.g. I had never seen such a beautiful beach before I went to Kauai.2) If the past perfect tense is not referring to an action at a specific time, it is not optional. Compare the examples below. Here the past perfect tense is referring to a lack of experience rather than an action at a specific time. For this reason, the past perfect tense cannot be used.e.g. She never saw a bear before she moved to Alaska. Not CorrectShe had never seen a bear before she moved to Alaska. CorrectPractice:Complete the following sentences using the simple past, past progressive or past perfect tense.Keys:1. were bathing, were looking, were playing (The past progressive refers to an event in progress.)2. was leaving, was, arrived, learned, had left, found, had used3. was cycling, stepped, was going, managed, didn’t hit4. was playing; was singing (We use the simple past tense to express a short action that happens in the middle of the long action. We can join the two ideas with when or while.)5. tried, wanted, had had, ended6. entered, didn't recognize, had lost, grown2. Verbs of perceptionVerbs of perception are a set of verbs denoting the use of one of the physical senses. Some verbs of perception see, look at, hear, listen, and feel, along with watch and sense can be used withobjects followed by verbs in -ing form, -ed form and infinitive form.e.g. We heard you leave. (Emphasis on our hearing.)We heard you leaving. (Emphasis on your leaving.)John has never heard the piece played before. (Emphasis on the passive voice of play.)Practice: Fill in the blanks with the proper form of the verbs in the brackets.1. The instructor watched the student ________ (take) the test.2. Special word order with as and thoughIn a concessive clause introduced by though or although, the complement or the adverbial can be placed at the beginning of the sentence. The formula for the inversion is:complement / adverbial + as / though + subject + predicate verbe.g. Old as / though he is, he works hard as a young man.Hard as / though he studied, he did not pass the examination.Practice:Rewrite the following sentences according to the model.Model: Though it was brief, it had been spent in that big old house.Brief as it was, it had been spent in that big old house.1.Though he was poor, he was honest.2.Though I admire him much as a writer, I do not like him asa man.3.Although he is a child, he knows a lot.4.Though he worked hard, he didn’t finish the work satisfactorily.Keys:1. This was an extremely interesting experience, as it helped me understand how much teamwork it took to bring the daily news to the public.Later on, I was given a large project with a lot of independence to complete it. I had to learn how to manage my time each day for this project, deciding what needed to be done before moving to the next part. This freedom really helped me grow a lot as a young professional.Everyone I met during this period welcomed me warmly. Colleagues from different departments would check in on me from time to time to make sure I was having a good experience. However, as the economy is getting stronger, it might be the ideal time to begin your search. If you believe you have the skills and abilities that employers need, it’s important to strategically prepare for the job hunting.First, don’t quit your current job until you’re certain about securing a new one. The best time to look for a job is when you are currently employed. People who are unemployed and desperate for work sometimes make bad decisions in accepting job offers. So you need to consider job offers carefully. Will the new job be better than the one you are having now? What about the location? Will the commute be easy or difficult? Secondly, good English skills can facilitate job hunting and career development. On average, it takes a person about five years to learn English well.
