Over 300 years its population grew gradually from 800 people to 8 million. But not all cities develop slowly over a long period of time. Boom towns grow from nothing almost overnight. In 1896, Dawson, Canada, was unmapped wilderness(荒野). But gold was discovered there in 1897, and two years later, it was one of the largest cities in the West, with a population of 30,000.Dawson did not have any of the natural conveniences of cities like London or Paris.People went there for gold. They travelled over snow-covered mountains are sailed hundreds of miles up icy rivers. The path to Dawson was covered with thirty feet of wet snow that could fall without warning. An avalanche(雪崩) once closed the path, killing 63 people. For many who made it to Dawson, however, the rewards were worth the difficult trip. Of the first20000 people who dug for gold, 4,000 got rich. About 100 of these stayed rich men for the rest of their lives. But no matter how rich they were, Dawson was never comfortable. Necessities like food andwood were very expensive. But soon, the gold that Dawson depended on had all been found. The city was crowded with disappointed people with no interest in setting down, and when they heard there were new gold discoveries in Alaska, they left Dawson City as quickly as they had come. Tourism in Dawson.CWhile famous foreign, architects are invited to lead the designs of landmark buildings in China such as the new CCTV tower and the National Center for the Performing Arts, many excellent Chinese architects are making great efforts to take the center stage.Their efforts have been proven fruitful. Wang Shu a 49-year-old Chinese architect, won the 2012 Pritzker Architecture Prize -which is often referred to as the Nobel Prize in architecture- -on February 28. He is the first Chinese citizen to win this award.Wang serves as head of the Architecture Department at the China Department at the China Academy of Art(CAA). His office is located at the Xiangshan campus (校园)of the university in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province. Many buildings on the campus are his original creations. The style of the campus is quite different from that of most Chinese universities. Many visitors were amazed by the complex architectural space and abundant building types. The curves (曲线)of the buildings perfectly match the rise and fall of hills, forming a unique view.Wang collected more than 7 million abandoned bricks of different ages. He asked the workers to use traditional techniques to make the bricks into walls, roofs and corridors. This creation attracted a lot of attention thanks to its mixture of modern and traditional Chinese elements.Wang’s works show a deep understanding of modern architecture and a good knowledge of traditions. Through such a balance, he had created a new type of Chinese architecture, said Tadao Ando, the winner of the1995 Pritzker Prize.Wang believes traditions should not be sealed in glass boxes at museums. “That is only evidence that traditions once existed, “ he said.“Many Chinese people have a misunderstanding of traditions. They think tradition means old things from the past. In fact, tradition also refers to the things that have been developing and that are still being created, “he said.“Today, many Chinese people are learning Western styles and theories rather than focusing on Chinese traditions. Many people tend to talk about traditions without knowing what they really are," said Wang. The study of traditions should be combined, with practice. Otherwise, the recreation of traditions would be artificial and empty, he said.28. The mixture of different shapes.B. The balance of East and WestC. The use of popular techniquesD. The harmony of old and new.31. What should we do about Chinese traditions according to Wang?A. Spread them to the world.B. Preserve them at museums.C. Teach them in universities.D. Recreate them in practice.DAdults understand what if feels like to be flooded with objects. Why do we often assume that more is more when it comes to kids and their belongings? The good Thews is that I can help my own kids learn earlier than I did how to live more with less.I found the pre- holidays a good time to encourage young children to donate less-used things, and it worked. Because of our efforts, our daughter Georgia did decide to donate a large bag of toys to a little girl whose mother was unable to pay for her holiday due to illness. She chose to sell a few larger objects that were less often used when we promised to put the money into her school fund(基金)(our kindergarten is serious about becoming a doctor)For weeks, I've been thinking of bigger, deeper questions. How do we make it a habit for them? And how do we train ourselves to help them live with, need, and use less? Yesterday, I sat with my son, Shepherd, determined to test my own theory on this. I decided to play with him with only one toy for as long as it would keep his interest. I expected that one toy would keep his attention for about five minutes, ten minutes, max. I chose a red rubber ball- simple, universally available. We passed it, he tried to put it in his mouth, he tried bouncing it rolling it, sitting on it, throwing it. It was totally, completely enough for him. Before I knew it an hour had passed and it was time to move on to lunch. We both became absorbed in the simplicity of playing together. He had my full attention and I had his. My little experiment to find joy in a single object worked for both of us.32. What do the words“more is more”in paragraph 1 probably mean?A. The more, the better.B. Enough is enoughC. More money, more worries.D. Earn more and spend more.33. What made Georgia agree to sell some of her objects?A. Developed by two doctors in the U.S. Department of Agriculture, it ' s an excellent water collector. Unfortunately, you must carry the necessary equipment with you, since it' s all but impossible to find natural substitutes. The only components required, though, are a 5 / 5/ sheet of clear or slightly milky plastic, six feet of plastic tube, and a container — perhaps just a dr inking cup —— to catch the water. These pieces can be folded into a n eat little pack and faste ned on your belt.To con struct a work ing still, use a sharp stick or rock to dig a hole four feet across and three feet deep. Try to make the hole in a damp area to in crease the water catcher' s productivity. Place your cup in the deepest part of the hole. Then lay the tube in place so that one end rests all the way in the cup and the rest of the line runs up —and out —the side of the hole.Next, cover the hole with the plastic sheet, securing the edges of the plastic with dirt and weighting the sheet ' s center down with a rock. The plastic should now form a cone(圆锥体)with 45-degree-angled sides. The low point of the sheet must be centered directly over, and no more tha n three in ches above, the cup.The solar still works by creating a greenhouse under the plastic. Ground water evaporates (蒸发)and collects on the sheet until small drops of water form, run down the material and fall off into the cup. Whe n the container is full, you can suck the refreshme nt out through the tube, and won ' t have to break down the still every time you need a drink.32. ATravelling by car in Switzerland is very easy, as villages and towns are very well marked and accessible. All green road signs indicate a highway or autobahn, blue signs are secondary roads and white signs back roads.*LimitationThe speed limit is 120 km/h (74 mph) on the autobahn, 80 km/h (50 mph) on secondary roads outside of towns and 50 km/h (30 mph) in towns if not indicated differently. Park at the railway or sky tram station and complete the journey via public transport. Trams always have priority. Buses have priority when leaving a bus stop. Traffic going up a mountain has priority. Some mountain roads require one-way traffic during certain hours only; these hours will be posted at either end of such roads.*FuelFuel stations along expressways are usually open from 6:00 a.m. to 10pm or midnight. Outside of open hours fuel is commonly available from automatic pumps that accept 10 and 20 SwF(瑞士法郎) notes or credit cards. Many stations accept major charge cards like Visa, MasterCard or American Express. Fuel price ranges from SFr. 1.75.- to 1.95.- depending on the oil price.21.What can you know from the text?A. The mountain roads are wide enough for motor-homes or trucks to go through.B. Travelers should try to save time to cover the places of interest in Switzerland.C. In Switzerland people over 16 are permitted to drive.22.What might NOT be available for travelers to pay fuel in Switzerland?A. Swiss FrancsB. Ali-payC. MasterCardD. American Express23. What type of writing is this text?A. Geography posterB. An activity announcementC. Travel journalD. Travel guideBSince I was first in China in 2012, my life, and China itself, have developed and changed a lot. My first China interaction was in 2012, when I came here with a friend. We traveled from Beijing to Hong Kong, all in 5 weeks. We had a fantastic time meeting local people, exploring beautiful places and eating delicious food. After this experience traveling across China and eating local food, I really wondered “How did I live witho ut eating dumplings and eggplant on a weekly basis?” Well, I guess I did, somehow, for 22 years! As my Chinese improved during my studies I became more independent and more aware of the possibilities of Waimai, or food home delivery. I suddenly noticed the thousands of Waimai drivers zooming across the roads on their motorcycles. On deep, dark Beijing winter days and rainy days, Waimai is like the holy grail and as I enjoyed my take - away dumplings I would think and laugh to myself, “How did I live before without being able to get Waimai?” Well, I guess I did, somehow, for 23 years! In mid-2015, I was back in China again for my master's degree. That's when I came across my first Mobike: “Oh, that’s a unique bike and surely it will get stolen soon ”, I thoug ht as I passed on my own black bike. But one week passed and I saw it still there. Then the one Mobike sighting turned into two and three, and soon thousands and then seemingly overnight the streets of Beijing were flooded with orange and yellow wheels. Again, I pondered on how I ever lived without my shared bike account. Well, I guess I did, somehow, for 25 years!China today is a country still steeped in ancient knowledge and custom, yet one that is also bursting with new ideas and changes. Although some things will always stay the same, something else is constantly changing at a pace beyond comprehension. I’m sure as I continue my life here in Beijing I will be swept up in the next new convenience of life that China’s rapid development is bringing out.24.According to the first paragraph, what impressed the author most might be ________.A. Chinese ancient wisdom has been replaced by new ideas.B. China is changing steadily and slowly.C. China will always stay as what it was.D. People in China will live a more convenient life in the future.CWith a starting price of $999, the iPhone X has the highest-price of any iPhone ever offered. Yet Apple said demand for its latest smartphone has so far been "off the charts."One of the most-talked about features of the iPhone X is the new front and back-facing cameras. Apple says its TrueDepth technology greatly improves performance for photographs and video. The camera is also trained to recognize faces and expressions. The company says this gives users power to open up the phone just by looking at it.The new Face ID recognition system replaces the Touch ID on other Apple devices that used a fingerprint to unlock the phone. It works by projecting more than 30,000 dots on the face of users to create a kind of map. An infrared (红外线的) camera then reads these marks to create an image that can be confirmed as having the same appearance.Apple says the system is also designed to continually learn. Each time the face is used to unlock the phone, it is supposed to note any changes, such as facial hair or the person getting older. The system can then remember the changes to keep recognizing the person over time.Reviewers reported successful tests in which the phone recognized the face in different situations and unlocked the device. But most reviewers also said the feature did not work perfectly all the time. One fairly common failure was that the Face ID sometimes did not unlock the iPhone X if the user wore a certain kind of sunglasses. Not surprisingly, wearing any kind of disguise – even one covering just part of the face – caused Face ID to fail. It was found to work correctly when the user was wearing headphones or a hat.Apple has also admitted that Face ID could fail when used with young people who look very much alike. But Apple says its research shows there is only a one in a million chance of another person being able to unlock someone else's iPhone X with Face ID. The company has promised the system will become "the new gold standard" for all facial recognition.28. How can users unlock an iPhone X?A. By using a fingerprint.B. By taking a picture.C. By looking at the iPhone X .D. By recognizing user’s faces.29. From the text, we know the new Face ID recognition ________.A. will recognize users by reading the dots projected on their facesB. will recognize users by using the dots on their facesC. won’t recognize users when they get olderD. is no better than the Touch ID technology30. Users can’t unlock an iPhone X if they wear ________.A. glassesB. masksC. hatsD. headphones31. What can we infer from the last paragraph?A. Young people can’t use the Face ID successfully.B. The system has become “the new gold standard”.C. A million people are using the iPhone X.D. Apple thinks the Face ID system is very successful.DWhen ordering food only takes a few minutes using a smartphone, it’s only natural that food deliveries have become part of college life. However, a university in Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region is trying to put a stop to this trend on its campus. On Nov 1, Guangxi University of Foreign Languages banned food delivery services and disposable food boxes, both to its campus and dormitories. The ba n immediately received fierce criticism from the university’s students, as well as internet users. Some complained that the ban made campus canteens very crowded. “There are not enough seats in the canteen, which forces us to eat standing up or squatting,”a student in the university surnamed Tan told Guangxi Television. The crowded canteens also mean that extra time is spent dining, which could have been used to nap during the lunch break. Some even complained that the canteen only provides a few dishes, m ost of which don’t taste so great.Su Junlv, from the university’s student affairs office, explained that the ban was carried out because off-campus food posed safety risks for students. It’s believed that take-away food had created a serious garbage problem, as there were often a large number of used food boxes found in campus garbage cans after students had finished their meals.According to Su, the ban was also brought in to help students develop a healthy lifestyle. “While food delivery services bring convenience, they let students form some lazy habits,” Su told Xinhua. “They spend a whole day in the dorm playing video games, watching TV soap operas and ordering food online.”However, in the eyes of Liu Junhai, a professor at Renmin University of China, there are other approaches that universities could take to improve their students’ meal times.“Universities should explore how to improve the dining experience in the canteens, such as the queuing and variety of dishes,” he told Xinhua.32. What does the passage mainly talk about?A. The convenience brought by food delivery.B. The effect of crowded canteens on students.C. A solution to stop students becoming lazy.D. A ban on food delivery in campus.33. In students’ opinion, what would be caused after the ban was carried out?A. It would take students less time to eat in the canteen.B. Students would enjoy various tasty dishes in the canteen.C. Some students may have their meals without seats in the canteen.D. Students would have a longer nap during lunch break.34. According to Su Junlv, the ban is intended to ________.A. tell the students all off-campus food is unhealthy.B. rid the campus of used food boxes.C. force students to spend less time on entertainment.D. improve the dining experience in the canteens.35. What can we infer about Liu Junhai’s attitude to the ban?A. NegativeB. SupportiveC. IndifferentD. Skeptical第二节(共5小题,每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

Yet Apple said demand for its latest smartphone has so far been "off the charts."One of the most-talked about features of the iPhone X is the new front and back-facing cameras. Apple says its TrueDepth technology greatly improves performance for photographsand video. The camera is also trained to recognize faces and expressions. The company says this gives users power to open up the phone just by looking at it.The new Face ID recognition system replaces the Touch ID on other Apple devices that used a fingerprint to unlock the phone. It works by projecting more than 30,000 dots on the faceof users to create a kind of map. One fairly common failure was that the Face ID sometimes did not unlock the iPhone X ifthe user wore a certain kind of sunglasses. Not surprisingly, wearing any kind of disguise – even one covering just part of the face – caused Face ID to fail. It was found to work correctly when the user was wearing headphones or a hat.Apple has also admitted that Face ID could fail when used with young people who lookvery much alike. Users can’t unlock an iPhoneX if they wear ________.A. glassesB. masksC. hatsD. headphones31. What can we infer from the last paragraph?A. Young people can’t use the Face ID successfully.B. The system has become “the new gold standard”.C. A million people are using the iPhone X.D. One kid in particular would try to make me feel worse in every way he knew. For example, he would throw stuff at me constantly, hit me on the head, punch(殴打)me, call me ugly and stupid, make fun of me and, of course tell me he would beat me up if I ever fought back. It was like his daily mission. And it was my daily mission to just get through the day. What could I say? It made my world very small because that was my main focus- just surviving. Everything else fell by the wayside. Unfortunately, that included any form of social life. So not only was my world tiny, but it was very lonelyLooking back to that time, which was about 11years ago, my biggest mistake was not bringing anyone into that world of mine. I was too proud (and embarrassed) to get help. I would rather not face the fact that I needed help because in my mind, that would mean that the bully won. It would also mean that I was weak.Let me just say this: bullying someone is a weak choice. The only reason why they come after you is that they think you won't do anything about it. Does that make anyone strong? Absolutely not. Be stronger-ask a parent, a teacher or a friend for help. Simply admit that you are struggling and need help. You can put it like this, "Somebody who is weak and trying to build himself or herself up has chosen to do that by putting me down. The only reason why they are doing that is that I am nice and I haven't done anything about it yet. Well I am through putting up with this. I have basic human rights that they are trying to take away to feel better and that is just not OK. How do I handle this? I don't want the pain cycle to continue and I don't want to become someone I don't want to be.4. The underlined word "It" in the first paragraph refers to___________.A. calling the author's nicknamesB. making friends with fellow studentsC. hurting the author by using force or threatsD. going through a difficult time with schooling5. What did the author do when he was bullied?A. He just hoped that he could survive the day.B. He fell by the waysideC. He called for help immediatelyD. He fought back bravely.6. The author suggests____________ to fight bullies.A. getting used to the pain as soon as possibleB. keeping it a secret inside and reducing your social lifeC. looking for help from parents, teachers or friendsD. promoting the understanding of basic human rights7. The author probably wrote this article to________________A. admit that he had been treated badly at schoolB. describe how he got rid of his weakC. show how grateful he was to those who helped hitD. share his experience and ideas on dealing with bulliesCWhatever the language, most of us communicate with voices, but what happens when voice is no longer available? An upcoming device called Smartstones Touch is designed to give people the ability to communicate through non-verbal Methods. As its name suggests, the Smartstones Touch is a palm-sized device that uses a series of taps, gestures, lights, vibration(震动))and sound to send short messages to a connected smartphone. For example, it could be used by a child returning home, who makes a unique gesture pattern on the Touch to alert her mom; a person held up in a meeting, who needs to send a quick note to his family that he's running late; an autistic child who isn't able to properly use words to talk; or a senior citizen who can't speak due to illness, who uses the Touch to communicate with a caretaker. You can even use it for fun, sending secrets messages to a friend or a loved one. With the Touch, you can communicate a preset “visual " message(there 's a list of messages you can send, or you can create custom ones) to someone by your side. The Touch can also send the message to a connected smartphone, allowing the user to communicate with someone remotely. The other person can then send a response via smart phone to the Touch user, like reminding grandma to take her pills. While there are plenty of creative uses, the Touch's designers intended the device to give a voice to people who aren't able to communicate verbally, Of course, the Touch isn't the first non-verbal form of communication. There's also sign language, braille(盲文), and even facial gestures. But using technology, the Touch is designed to give anyone-especially those disabled-the means to non-verbally communicate quickly, without the time required to learn something like sign language or braille8. It makes the user more creative,DPeople are being lured(引诱) onto Facebook with the promise of a fun, free service, and don’t realize that they’re paying for it by giving u p loads of personal information. Facebook then attempts to make money by selling their datato advertisers that want to send targeted messages. Most Facebook users don’t realize this is happening. Even if they know what the company is up to, they still hav e no idea what they’re paying for Facebook, because people don’t really know what their personal details are worth. The biggest problem, however, is that the company keeps changing the rules. Early on, you could keep everything private. That was the great thing about Facebook—you could create your own little private network. Last year, the company changed its privacy rules so that many things—your city, your photo, your friends’ names—were set, by default(默认), to be shared with everyone on the Internet.According to Facebook’s vice president Elliot Schrage, the company is simply making changes to improve its service, and if people don’t share information, they have a “less satisfying experience.”Some critics think this is more about Facebook looking to make more money. Its original business model, which involved selling ads and putting them at the side of the page, totally failed. Who wants to look at ads when they’re online connecting with their friends? The privacy issue has already landed Facebook in hot water in Washington. In April, Senator Charles Schumer called on Facebook to change its privacy policy. He also urged the Commission to set guidelines for social-networking sites. “I think the senators rightly communicated that we had not been clear about what the new products were and how people could choose to use them or not to use them,” Schrage admits.I suspect that whatever Facebook has done so far to invade(侵犯)our privacy, it’s only the beginning, which is why I’m considering deacti vating(撤销)my account. Facebook is a handy site, but I’m upset by the idea that my information is in the hands of people I don’t trust. That is too high a price to pay.12.What do we learn about Facebook from the first paragraph?A.It is a website that sends messages to targeted users.B.It makes money by putting on advertisements.C.It earns money by selling its user’s personal dataD.It provides a lot of information to its users13.What does the author say about most Facebook users?A.They don’t know th eir personal data enriches FacebookB.They are unwilling to give up their personal informationC.They don’t identify themselves when using websiteD.They care very little about their personal information14.Why does Facebook make changes to its rules according to Elliot Schrage?A.To help its users make more friendsB.To obey the Federal guidelinesC.To make money by attracting more usersD.To offer better service to its users15.What does Senator Charles Schumer argue for?A.Setting guidelines for advertising on websitesB.Setting rules for social-networking sitesC.Stopping sharing user’s personal informationD.Removing ads from all social-networking sites第二节(共5小题,每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

You may unintentionally bother your neighbors with actions that you perceive to be harmless. This is especially true for those individuals who live above an apartment. Living upstairs, you must always be aware that everything you do may be heard by those wholive below. This doesn't mean that you have to drastically change your lifestyle, though.Wear slippers while in your upstairs apartment. Frank Hurley’s pictures would be outstanding----undoubtedly first-ratephoto-journalism---if they had been made last week. In fact, they were shot from 1914 through 1916, most of them after a disastrous shipwreck(海滩), by a cameraman who had no reasonable expectation of survival. Many of the images were stored in an ice chest, under freezing water, in the damaged wooden ship. The ship was the Endurance, a small, tight, Norwegian-built three-master that was intended to take Sir Ernest Shackleton and a small crew of seamen and scientists, 27 men in all, to the southernmost shore of Antarctica’s Wedd ell Sea. From that point Shackleton wanted to force a passage by dog sled(雪橇) across the continent. The journey was intended to achieve more than what Captain Robert Falcon Scott had done. Captain Scott had reached the South Pole early in 1912 but had died with his four companions on the march back.As writer Caroline Alexander makes clear in her forceful and well-researched story The Endurance, adventuring was even then a thoroughly commercial effort. Scott’s last journey, completed as be lay in a tent dying of cold and hunger, caught the world’s imagination, and a film made in his honor drew crowds. 广东省惠州市2018届高三第三次调研考试英语2018.01第I卷第二部分阅读理解(共两节,满分40分)第一节(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)ATips for waiting in lineWhen lining up at the supermarket checkout counter, the lines next to us always seem to be moving faster than the one that we are standing in.Now the New York Times has put together the research of scientists to give you some insights into the math and psychology of queuing. It also offered tips on picking the fastest line no matter if you’re lining up in a supermarket, a bank or any where else.Picking someone with a full chartUS mathematician Dan Meyer believes that a chart(购物车) full of items doesn’t tell the whole story. “Every person requires a fixed amount of time to say hello, pay, say goodbye and clear out of the lane,” he sai d. And that amount of time is an average of 41 seconds per person. On the other hand, the time that each item takes to be rung up is only three seconds. That means if there are five people ahead of you, each with ten items in their charts, the waiting time will be 355 seconds. But if there is only one person ahead of you ,with 50 items in the chart, the waiting time is 191 seconds. You do the math.Study the customerHow many people are ahead of you is one thing, and who they are is another. For example, if they are old people – and this is not ageist(年龄歧视的)– they tend to move slower and delay the checkout process. The items in their chart are also important. For example, four bottles of the same milk will definitely go faster than four completely different items.Choose a “serpentine line”In some places, there may be just one line leading to several checkout counters. The person at the head of the line goes to the next available counter. This is known as a “serpentine(蛇形的) line”. You should always choose a serpentine line because even if one of the cashiers or customers is slow, it won’t hold up an entire line.Go leftAccording to Robert Samuel, a US science writer, around 90 percent of people are right-handed, which means they tend to go to the right. So heading to the opposite direction – left –will give you a better chance of finding a faster line.21.If there are 6 people before you, and they buy 72 items altogether, then you have to waitabout ________seconds.A. 462B. 318C. 246D. 21622. What we needn’t consider before deciding which line to stand in?A. The number of people before you.B. The quantity of the goods to check out before you.C. What kind of people before you.D. How many left-handed people before you.A. most people are used to choosing checkout counters on their rightB. we should always avoid lining up behind a crowded cartC. 7 cups of the same kind need as much time as 7 different ones to be checked outD. the cashiers and customers in a “serpentine line” are slowB"Selfie," taking a picture of yourself to post on social media, became an official word in the Oxford dictionary in 2018. The idea seems simple, just pose and snap a photo of yourself with your cell phone camera. How difficult could that be?But in 2018 a reported 15 people died while taking selfies. That number has risen each year since then. Thirty-nine deaths connected to selfies were reported in 2018. And, this year has seen more than 70 such deaths.Researchers from universities in the U.S. and India have released findings from the first study of deaths due to selfies. The investigators examined the causes and characteristics o f the deaths. The researchers found that people who take selfies for sharing on social media often have a narcissistic tendency. The report says these people "use selfies as a form of self-identification and expression." They may take selfies in more dangerous settings because they seek greater attention. These dangerous situations can lead to injury, and even death. The researchers define a selfie death as "death of an individual or a group of people that could have been avoided had the individual(s) not been taking a selfie."One example of a dangerous selfie in the study involved bicycle races. People sometimes get on the track to take a picture of themselves with the racing bicycles behind them. Crashes and injuries have resulted. Another example described people standing on train tracks trying to get a selfie as a train moves toward them from behind. The most common cause of selfie death was falling from high places. It caused 32 of the 172 deaths during the last two and one-half years. Drowning was another common cause of death. And it might be more dangerous to be a man with a smartphone. Although women take more selfies, males were far more likely to die during selfies. 75.5% of the reported deaths were of men. About one-third of the 172 reported selfie deaths had a single death while24incidents involved the deaths of groups. Two of the incidents killed seven people each.24. We completed the sale by 6:10 with everything wrapped in paper and ribbons!I worked for Dancer’s three more holiday seasons and was always there just before closing on Christmas Eve, when Mr. Johnson knew I had the answers he needed. Everyone carries a phone with them nowadays that has an amazing camera. Unfortunately, you must carry the necessary equipment with you, since it’s all but impossible to find natural substitutes. The only components required, though, are a 5' 5'sheet of clear or slightly milky plastic, six feet of plastic tube, and a container—perhaps just a drinking cup —to catch the water. These pieces can be folded into a neat little pack and fastened on your belt.To construct a working still, use a sharp stick or rock to dig a hole four feet across and three feet deep. Try to make the hole in a damp area to increase the water catcher’s productivity. Place your cup in the deepest part of the hole. Then lay the tube in place so that one end rests all the way in the cup and the rest of the line runs up —and out —the side of the hole.Next, cover the hole with the plastic sheet, securing the edges of the plastic with dirt and weighting the sheet’s center down with a rock. The plastic should now form a cone(圆锥体) with 45degreeangled sides. The low point of the sheet must be centered directly over, and no more than three inches above, the cup.The solar still works by creating a greenhouse under the plastic. Ground water evaporates (蒸发) and collects on the sheet until small drops of water form, run down the material and fall off into the cup. When the container is full, you can suck the refreshment out through the tube, and won’t have to break down the still every time you need a drink.32.
