Section 1: English-Chinese translation(英译汉)(50points)Passage 1Y ou’ve temporarily misplaced your cell phone and anxiously retrace your steps to try to find it. Or perhaps you never let go of your phone—it's always in your hand, your pocket, or your bag, ready to be answered or consulted at a moment’s notice. When your battery life runs down at the end of the day, you feel that yours is running low as well. New research s hows that there’s a psychological reason for such extreme phone dependence: According to the attachment theory, for some of us, our phone serves the same function as the teddy bear we clung to in childhood.Attachment theory proposes that our early life experiences with parents responsible for our well-being, are at the root of our connections to the adults with whom we form close relationships. Importantly, attachment in early life can extend to inanimate objects. Teddy bears, for example, serve as “transitional objects.” The teddy bear, unlike the parent, is always there. We extend our dependence on parents to these animals, and use them to help us move to an independent sense of self.A cell phone has the potential to be a “compensatory attachment”obje ct. Although phones are often castigated for their addictive potential, scientists cite evidence that supports the idea that “healthy, normal adults also report significant emotional attachment to special objects”Indeed, cell phones have become a pervasive feature of our lives: The number of cell phone subscriptions exceeds the total population of the planet. The average amount of mobile or smartphone use in the U.S. is 3.3 hours per day. Phones have distinct advantages. They can be kept by your side and they provide a socialconnection to the people you care about. Even if you’re not talking to your friends, lover, or family, you can keep their photos close by, read their messages, and follow them on social media. Y ou can track them in real time but also look back on memorable moments together. These channels help you “feel less alone”. Passage 2Many countries have adopted the principle of sustainable development it can combat environment deterioration in air quality, water quality and production in developing countries. Health education serves as a viable role for every member in the world. But some argue that it's a vague idea, some organizations may use it in its own interests, whether environmental or economic is the nature of interests. Others argue that sustainable development in developing countries overlook the local customs, habitude and people.Whereas interdependence is desirable during times of peace, war necessitates competition and independence. Tariffs and importation limits strengthen a country's economic vitality while potentially weakening theeconomies of its enemies. Moreover, protectionism in the weapons industry is highly desirable during such circumstances because reliance on another state for armaments can be fatal. For the most part, economists emphasize the negative effects of protectionism. It reduces international trade and raises prices for consumers. In addition, domestic firms that receive protection have less incentive to innovate. Although free trade puts uncompetitive firms out of business, the displaced workers and resources are ultimately allocated to other areas of the economy.Imposing quotas is a method used to protect trade, since foreign companies cannot ship more products regardless of how low they set their prices. Countries that hope to help a new industry thrive locally often impose quotas on imported goods. They believe that such restrictions allow entities in the new industry to develop their own competitive advantages and produce the products efficiently.Protectionism’s purpose is usually to create jobs for domestic workers. Companies that operate in industriesprotected by quotas hire workers locally. Another disadvantage of quotas is the reduction in the quality of products in the absence of competition from foreign companies. Without competition, local firms are less likely to invest in innovation and improve their products and services. Domestic sellers don’t have an incentive to enhance efficiency and lower their prices, and under such conditions, consumers eventually pay more for products and services they could receive from foreign competitors. As local companies lose competitiveness, they become pressured to outsource jobs. In the long-run, increasing protectionism commonly leads to layoffs and economic slowdown.

Milton Friedman, Free Markets Theorist, Dies at 94.Milton Friedman, the grandmaster of free-market economic theory in the postwar era and a prime force in the movement of nations toward less government and greater reliance on individual responsibility, died today in San Francisco, where he lived. He was 94.Conservative and liberal colleagues alike viewed Mr. Friedman, a Nobel prize laureate,as one of the 20th century‟s leading economic scholars, on a par with giants like John Maynard Keynes and Paul Samuelson.Flying the flag of economic conservatism, Mr. Friedman led the postwar challenge to the hallowed theories of Lord Keynes, the British economist who maintained that governments had a duty to help capitalistic economies through periods of recession and to prevent boom times from exploding into high inflation. In Professor Friedman‟s view, government had the opposite obligation: to keep its hands off the economy, to let the free market do its work. The only economic lever that Mr. Friedman would allow government to use was the one that controlled the supply of money —a monetarist view that had gone out of favor whenhe embraced it in the 1950s. He went on to record a signal achievement, predicting the unprecedented combination of rising unemployment and rising inflation that came to be called stagflation. His work earned him the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Science in 1976.Rarely, his colleagues said, did anyone have such impact on both his own profession and on government. Though he never served officially in the halls of power, he was always around them, as an adviser and theorist.“Among economic scholars, Milton Friedman had no peer,” Ben S. Bernanke, the Federal Reserve chairman, said today. “Th e direct and indirect influences of his thinking on contemporary monetary economics would be difficult to overstate.”Alan Greenspan, the former Federal Reserve chairman, said of Mr. Friedman in aninterview on Tuesday. “From a longer-term point of view, it‟s his academic achievements which will have lasting import. But I would not dismiss the profound impact he has already had on the American public‟s view.”Mr. Friedman had a gift for communicating complicated ideas in simple and lucid ways, and it served him well as the author or co-author of more than a dozen books, as a columnist for Newsweek from 1966 to 1983 and even as the star of a public television series.

Information and communications are central to modem society and organizations. One approach to understand the working environment is to consider an organization as a communications system. An organization that has open lines of communication with valid, honest information going up, down, and throughout the organization will be much more effective and a much better place to work than the organization that attempts to restrict the flow of information or distort and deceive. When leadership attempts to keep workers in the dark, workers tend to become distrustful. This undermines their cooperation. It is easy to understand the value and importance of open, honest communications and valid information. Yet, few organizations are able to function in this manner. In the long run, poor communication will undermine the entire organization. Restricting communication and distorting information are symptoms of short-range thinking. We must avoid these stupid, short-sighted traps and constantly strive for an open communications system with objective information.分析:① Information and communications are central to modem society and organizations.

Directions: Translate the following passage into Chinese and write yourversion in the corresponding space in your ANSWER BOOKLET.Both language and culture are learned by children without special organizedprograms of instruction, but motivation to learn is very high since language isthe most effective means for a child to obtain what he or she wants. If thelearning of a new language begins before lower adolescence, one is likely to beable to speak such a language with complete naturalness, but if learned afterupper adolescence some hangover of a mother-tongue feature is very likely topersist. But not only do languages e_hibit such learning patterns, but so docultural traits, for e_ample, shaking hands, kissing, and embracing.Although many persons assume that languages e_ist in dictionaries andgrammars, in fact they only e_ist in people’s heads. But this is equally true ofcultural traits, which indicate clearly a person’s value system when crucialdecisions need to be made before there is any time to think about alternatives, for e_ample, diving into a flooding stream to rescue a drowning child.分析:① Both language and culture are learned by children without specialorganized programs of instruction, but motivation to learn is very high sincelanguage is the most effective means for a child to obtain (what he or shewants). 考点: 转态译法:被主交换: are learned by children→ 儿童学习意译: special organized programs of instruction→ 特定的程序和计划具体译法:成语法: obtain what he or she wants→ 得偿所愿换序译法: since 从句先译② If the learning of a new language begins before lower adolescence, one islikely to be able to speak such a language with complete naturalness, but iflearnedafter upper adolescence some hangover of a mother-tongue feature is verylikely to persist. 正反译法: if learned after upper adole scence→ 如果成年还没有学语言转态译法:被主交换 but if learned af ter upper adolescence→ 如果成年还没有学语言具体译法:成语法: persist→ 根深蒂固③ But not only do languages e_hibit such learning patterns, but soultural traits, for e_ample, shaking hands, kissing, and embracing. 考点: 倒装句的翻译④ Although many persons assume that languages e_ist in dictionaries andgrammars, in fact they only e_ist in people’s heads. 考点: 具体译法:加字法: gra mmars→ 语法书前者有〝字典〞, grammar如翻译成〝语法〞,和〝字典〞并不是一个对等的实物,因为〝语法〞是一个抽象的东西,而〝语法书〞是一个具体的出版物,因此应选择后者的翻译.⑤ But this is equally true of cultural traits, (whi ch indicate clearlyaperson’s value system) when crucial decisions need to be made before there isany time to think about alternatives, for e_ample, diving into a flooding streamto rescue a drowning child. This is true of/in… In Mac, you can enjoy the food in a comforting atmosphere with instant andprofessional service. This is also true in KFC. 换序译法: ⑴ But this is equally true of cultural traits, ⑸ whichindicateclearly a person’s value system ⑶ when crucial decisions need to be made ⑵before there is any time to think about alternatives, ⑷ for e_ample, diving intoa flooding stream to rescue a drowning child. 1 :The Chinese people are always cherishing freedom and peace .译文 2 : The Chinese people have been a freedom-and-peace-loving nation sinceancient times. 1: The Chinese people are always looking forward to the global peace andfriendship among all nations.译文2: They have always hoped for the world to be at peace and the peoples ofvarious countries to co-e_ist friendly. 1 : Having suffered from the pains of wars and invasion in recent times, the Chinese people have cherished the value/preciousness of freedom and peacethan ever.译文 2 : Having suffered from wars and foreign aggression in recent times, the Chinese people treasure the freedom and peace all the more. 1 : The construction and development of any country needs/entails apeaceful and stable international and domestic environment.译文 2 : Every nation needs a peaceful and stable international and domesticenvironment for its construction and development.⑤ 任何一个国家和民族的自由,都是一切个人自由的前提和基础. The freedom of any country or nation is the prerequisite andfoundation/basis of that of any individual.⑥ 我们希望各国人民都生活在没有战争和暴力的世界里,希望各国人民都能享有不被人压迫,歧视和欺凌的自由. We sincerely hope people of all nations live in a world free from warsand violence and enjoy the freedom immune to/without oppression, discriminationand humiliation. Information and communications are central to modem society andorganizations. One approach to understand the working environment is to consideran organization as a communications system. An organization that has open linesof communication with valid, honest information going up, down, and throughoutthe organization will be much more effective and a much better place to workthan the organization that attempts to restrict the flow of informationordistort and deceive. When leadership attempts to keep workers in the dark, workers tend to become distrustful. This undermines their cooperation. It is easy to understand the value and importance of open, honestcommunications and valid information. Yet, few organizations are able tofunction in this manner. In the long run, poor communication will undermine theentire organization. Restricting communication and distorting information aresymptoms of short-range thinking. We must avoid these stupid, short-sightedtraps and constantly strive for an open communications system with objectiveinformation.分析:① Information and communications are central to modem society andorganizations. 具体译法:成语法: central→ 至关重要② One approach to understand the working environment is to consider anorganization as a communications system. 译文2:了解工作环境的一个方法是把企业看作是一个沟通体系.③⑴ An organization (that has open lines of communication with valid, honestinformation going up, down, and throughout the organization) ⑶ will be much moreeffective and a much better place to work ⑵ than the organization (that attemptsto restrict the flow of information or distort and deceive). 意译:这句句子意译的数量相当多,可以说是中级口译翻译到现在为止意译考点最多的地方了.open lines of communication→ 公开的沟通渠道(直译)→ 坦诚的沟通模式(意译)valid, honest infor mation→ 真实可靠的信息(直译)→ 诚信信息(意译)going up, down, and throughout → 机构内上下(直译)→ 全方位(意译)more effective→ 更高的效率(直译)→ 更高的效能(意译)restrict the flow of information→ 限制信息的流通(直译)→ 封闭信息(意译)转性译法:形容词→ 名词effective→ 效能形容词→ 动词better→ 适宜于④ When leadership attempts to keep workers in the dark, workers tend tobecome distrustful. 考点: 具体译法:加字法: leadership→ 领导层成语法: keep workers in the dark→ 让员工蒙在鼓里转性译法:形容词→ 动词distrustful→ 不信任⑤ This undermines their cooperation.译文:由此破坏他们之间的合作.⑥ It is easy to understand the value and importance of open, honestcommunications and valid information. 考点: 具体译法:加字法: importance→ 重要性成语法: open, honest communications→ 开诚布公的沟通正反译法: easy→ 不难的valid→ 无误的⑦ Yet, few organizations are able to function in this manner. 考点: 正反译法: few→ 不多见⑧ In the long ru n , poor communication will undermine the entireorganization. 考点: 正反译法: poor→ 不良的⑨ Restricting communication and distorting information a re symptoms ofshort-range thinking . 考点: 具体译法:成语法: short-range thin king→ 井底之蛙;鼠目寸光正反译法: short-range thinking→ 缺乏远见⑩ We must avoid these stupid, short-sightedtraps and constantly strive foran open communications system with objective information.

That's how one mother described her constant squabbles with her eleven-year-old daughter. And she's hardly alone in the experien ___. The arguments almost always involve mundane ___tters -taking out the garbage, ing home on time, cleaning up the bedroom. But despite its b ___ity, this relentless bickering takes its adoles ___nts - particularly mothers - report lower levels of life satisfaction, less ___rital happiness, and more general distress than parents of younger children. Is this continual arguing ne ___ssary? For the past two years, my students and I have been examining the day-to-day relationships of parents and young teenagers to learn how and why family ties change during the transition from childhood into adoles ___n ___. Repeatedly, I am struck by the fact that, despite considerable love between most teens and their parents, they can't help sparring. Even in the closest of families, parents and teenagers squabble and bicker surprisingly often - so often, in fact, that we hear impassioned recountings of these arguments in virtually every discussion we have with parents or teenagers. One of the most frequently heard phrases on our interview tapes is, "We usually get along but …" As psychologist Anne Petersen notes, the subject of parent-adoles ___nt conflict has generated considerable controversy among researchers and clinicians. Until about twenty years ago, our views ofsuch conflict were shaped by psycho ___ytic clinicians and theorists, who argued that spite and revenge, passive aggressiveness and rebelliousness toward parents are all nor ___l, even healthy, aspects of adoles ___n ___. But stu ___s conducted during the 1970s on samples of average teenagers and their parents (rather than those who spent Wednesday afternoons on ___ysts' couches) challenged the view that family storm and stress was inevitable or pervasive. These surveys consistently showed that three-fourths of all teenagers and parents, here and abroad, feel quite close to each other and report getting along very well. Family relations appeared far more pacific than professionals and the public had believed.61. Questions of education are frequently discussed as if they bore no relation to the social system in which and for which the education is carried on. This is one of the monest reasons for the unsatisfactoriness of the answers. It is only within a particular social system that a system of education has any meaning. If education today seems to deteriorate, if it seems to bee more and more ___tic and meaningless, it is pri ___rily because we have no settled and satisfactory arrangement of society, and because we have both vague and diverse opinions about the kind of society we want. Education is a subject which cannot be discussed in a void: our questions raise other questions, social, economic, financial, political. And the bearings are on more ulti ___te problems even than these: to know what we want in education we must know what we want in general, we must derive our theory of education from our philosophy of life. The problem turns out to be a religious problem. One might almost speak of a "crisis" of education. There are particular problems for each country, for each civilization, just as there are particularproblems for each parent; but there is also a general problem for the whole of the civilized world, and for the uncivilized so far as it is being taught by its civilized superiors; a problem which ___y be as acute in Japan, in China or in India as in Britain or Europe or America. The progress (I do not mean extension) of education for several ___nturies has been from one aspect a drift, from another aspect a push; for it has tended to be dominated by the idea of "getting on". The individual wants more education, not as an aid to acquisition of wisdom but in order to get on; the nation wants more in order to get the better of other nations, the class wants to get the better of other classes, or at least to hold its own against them. Education is associated therefore with technical efficiency on the one hand, and with rising in society on the other. Education bees something to which everybody has a "right", even irrespective of his capacity; and when everyone getsit - by that time, of course, in a diluted and ___erated form - then we naturally discover that education is no longer an infallible means of getting on, and people turn to another fallacy: that of "education for leisure" - without having revised their notions of "leisure". As soon。
