Trace the history back to writing instrumentsBefore the invention of the computer technology, nothing could be more familiar than the relationship between paper and Chinese character. In a sense, the invention of paper changed the developing process of human civilization,Li Yuese,England’s famous scientist said, for human civilization history,I guess, for all titles,paper-making and printing are the most important. They combined with compass and gunpowder in a voluntary and developing civilization history, igniting the big fire. Hence, the Europe bid farewell to the dark mid-century and begin move forward to modern history. But why the Chinese invented the printing and paper-making? What’s the relationship between the invention of printing and paper-making and Chinese character? When we talk about the great wall,we have to refer to a senior general,Meng Tian in Qin dynasty, the splendid great wall was supervised by him and linked with each other. But in Chinese folk, this brave general was called pen progenitor,up to now,the hometown of writing brush was supported by the invention of writing brush by Meng Tian. According to Chinese folk,Meng Tian and his wife were concentrated on studying the writing brush and work out successfully, they impart the technology to his neighbors, from that time, they made the writing brush from generation to generation.but did the writing brush really invented by Meng Tian? Withthe appearance of the sixth Qin Shihuang ‘s buried sculpture legion.this doubt is excessive. The sixth hole was excavated in 2000,there are twelve pottery figurine, which are different from the former pottery figurine, from the pileum and sharpener,we could judge belongs to the civilian figures, which are equal to pettifogger. The writing brush was replaced by knife, from now on,the Chinese asked someone to write the articles that are called ask some to add the knife. The writing brush was invented not for writing Chinese character, but from the painting painted pottery, many designs was painted by writing brush,so the writing brush was created before the appearance of Chinese character. In fact,Meng Tian improved the creation of writing brush, but this legend also support the prosperity of writing brush production, from experiencing the soaking time, which has become a part of history. In Qin dynasty, the bamboo slip recorded the management of handicraft and agriculture, including the store of crops and the process of crops,it was so interesting. Qin Shihuang was dead for tiring, the Qin empire was collapsed because of Qin Ershi’s tyranny, replaced by the Han dynasty. Qin Shihuang was the highest governor of the Qin dynasty,he was not only the brainwork, but also the manual work, but who can help him to solve this problem? Before the invention of the paper-making,the Chinese writing the Chinese character on the silk, the silk industry had many thousands of years in china, the white silk was not only for making clothes, but also forwriting Chinese character. Before the appearance of paper in Europe, writing mostly depended on papyrus and sheepskin. Although the papyrus was cheap, but it was not durable, the sheepskin was the best instrument of writing, but was too expensive. But why the Chinese solved this problem? In a quite long history, rearing of silkworms was the chinese patent, from now on,the silk industry in Jiangsu,Zhejiang was very popular around the world. Cai Lun invented the paper-making,someone would asked, was he received the order of the upper hand or had the idea from his mind? In this long process,it was sure that he received the official support. Based on the practical experience of the former people,he used the tree bark and the fishing net to invent the paper, this was a great invention from now on.We said that the Chinese had so many inventions, influenced many the world in whatever domains. The Chinese four great inventions changed the human’s destiny, promoted the china move forward to a new stage,it was the most important inventions.。
Chinese calligraphy
Chinese calligraphyThe way that using the writing brush to write is called Chinese calligraphy, which is highly named the art of art. Chinese calligraphy has experienced a long history, in which so many calligrapher improved Chinese calligraphy and made it much better. But how such thing happened? The fifth part of the documentary will explain the question in detail and I also will talk about my own view towards Chinese calligraphy. The general requirements of writing character are beautiful shape and fluent writing, which fit all character-writing. However the Chinese calligraphy is more concerned about the creation of atmosphere and can cultivate people’s personality. Most foreigner not ever seeing Chinese calligraphy before can be moved by Chinese calligraphy when they see it at the first sight. Why? Chinese calligraphy is like a mini abstract picture which comes from the ideographic feature of Chinese calligraphy. The formation of Chinese character is from the real thing. Before the writer begins to write something on the Chinese art paper, something has formed in his or her mind. Just a while the paper has become a picture filled with many flowing characters. How amazing it is!The well-known emperor in Chinese history, Li Shiming, thought highly of the calligraphy work, preface to the orchidpavilion collection, and not just that, he compared the writer of the calligraphy Wang Xizhi to Confucius and lifted Wang to the level of saint. Li Shiming was a politician and also a calligrapher. We know that it is from the Tang dynasty, the government elected talents mainly with the criterion of calligraphy. Whether one person can be elected as someone important in the government or not was decided by his calligraphy at a large degree, calligraphy was first time to be listed in the education and examination system.Chinese calligraphy is the combination of black and white, dynamic and static, virtual and real, which is the unique aesthetic standard. The next famous calligrapher is Yan Zhenqin in Tang dynasty who created a new form calligraphy named Yan style with the feature of sublime. Yan was sent to negotiate with an insurgent and died for it .Yan was the model of Chinese nation, and he exercised the core of Chinese calligraphy--- the cultivated personality. Yan was a representative of positive side, and also villain had good calligraphy if only with the eye of calligraphy.Song dynasty, a great period for calligraphy, during which a prominent calligrapher was Su Shi . Su was well known for Xingkai but experienced miserable time. During his unfortunate time he expressed his grief and indignation by writing, The Red Cliff Ode,one of the well-known writing work. Although his misery, he behaved quite calm. He transcended the pain from body and mind, expressed the state of life by calligraphy. That is the calligraphy by Su Shi.Another unlucky guy is Gong Zizhen who experienced difficulties and finally achieved scholar at the age of 38. Why he was so unlucky was that his writing was really bad. Qing dynasty followed the history, and paid much attention to the calligraphy. Pavilion system, with the rule of black, big, fluent, circle. But Mr.Gong was not good at it, so he was discontented with the system.Tablet of Wei dynasty, the writing on tablet. Chinese calligraphy came into a new time. Kang Youwei praised this kind of calligraphy much. So people saw a new form for calligraphy. With the development of society, more and more people use computers, phone, i-pad, and other modern devices to write instead of pen, pencil, even less writing brush, which worry many people. We are going far away from Chinese calligraphy, and we ignore the core of Chinese calligraphy consciously. How sad it is for the whole nation.Chinese calligraphy experienced ups and downs of time, but still with great charm until today. So what we should do is to maintain itand inherit it. Because it is the greatest treasure for all the people the nation.。

The spiritual values of Chinese characterThe difference between Chinese character and western symbolic character is that the former is almost constituted of its spiritual values. The existing of single Chinese character indicates clearly what is right and wrong, from this point of view,Chinese character is the basic spirit of Chinese civilization and the crystal of ethical values. Chinese character is the whole nation’s cultural library. So ,today we talk some about the spiritual values of Chinese character.About in 240 BC,the prime minister of qin,Lv Buwei, ordered educator to compile a great work which could involve something from the ancient to the modern, that was so-called Lushi Chunqiu. In order to strive for excellence,Lv Buwei ordered the solider to hang Lushi Chunqiu in Luo Yang city,it is told that the people who could increase and decrease a writing reward a thousand pieces of gold. According to research,at this point,Chinese character had become the Chinese writing system from the symbol of families flourish. China was an agricultural country,in Shang dynasty, there were only two seasons, but today had four seasons. As for Shang people, the ripe crops deserved celebrations,at the end of harvesting, the Shang emperor would presided over a ceremony to worship the heaven and the ancestors. This activity remained thousands of years in china. If a survival mode want to dominate people to know the nature,it must experience a long time. The vivid Chinese characterenabled us to face the agricultural survival of the ancient ancestors. At the very beginning,Western countries and china began to take different roads by nature’s gift. While western countries began to enter into industry countries,China still remained the farming life. So ,why the farming civilization existed a long time in china? At some point,it is related to the fertile Yellow Land,at the inscriptions on bones or tortoise shells of shang dynasty, the Chinese character of Yi is a picture of the cultivation of trees. The nature is mysterious and divine, the Chinese character Ren in the inscriptions on bones or tortoise shells of shang dynasty was described a picture of people’s obedience. People was a part of heaven, people could experience the heaven’s gifts in this four seasons. For ancient ancestors, the notion of a small family was luxurious, even a small family could not engage in farming desperately, for the backward means of production. Once the bad weather appeared,so it needed a big farming organization to engage in farming. Every family should take his social duty and be responsible to the society. What is duty? That is,you will dispatch troops and you will join it . Not only marching to war,but also living a life,it must build some rules. Although the Home began from big family, but what the time did the small family begin to separate? As the advent of metal tools, especially the appearance of iron, iron plough was the cause of this great change. Another reason is the appearance of the feudalism’s breakdown, politically, the dynasty began to disintegratebig family in order to stable his dominance. Culture and ethics both belong to heritage.maybe our ancient ancestors use Zi replacing Wen,so we can record the symbol system of language.Once King Wen of Zhou go to royal progress,he saw a corpse half the way,he ordered attendants to bury him,but his attendants said,it is a nameless corpse,King Wen of Zhou was very unhappy,he said,I am the king of a country,it means the head of a big family. While there had emperor, there also had attendants. It seemed like a small family separate from a big family, the official position also separate from administrative family. The western humanism goes against religions and Christian,on the other hand,it had the spirit of conquering the nature, however, china stands for Ru spirit,it belongs to humanism and nature. So ,some scholars thought, contrast to western civilization, the Chinese civilization pursues the spiritual values of inner heart and ethics,in a word, they both remain great and rich legacy.。
After reading "Five Thousand Years Up and Down", I was struck by the vastness and complexity of Chinese history. From the earliest dynasties to the modern era, this book covers a huge range of time and provides valuable insights into the evolution of Chinese culture and society. One of the things that impressed me most about the book was its emphasis on the continuity of Chinese culture over time. Despite numerous invasions, conflicts, and changes in leadership, the fundamental values that underlie Chinese civilization have remained intact. This continuity is evident in the enduring importance of Confucianism, Taoism, and other traditional beliefs and practices.Another aspect of the book that stood out to me was its focus on the lives and experiences of ordinary people. While much of Chinese history is dominated by the actions of rulers and elites, this book highlights the struggles and triumphs of everyday individuals, from farmers and artisans to merchants and intellectuals. By doing so, it provides a more nuanced and inclusive understanding of what life was like for different segments of society throughout history.Overall, "Five Thousand Years Up and Down" is a fascinating and informative read that sheds light on the many facets of Chinese culture and history. It is a testament to the resilience and endurance of a civilization that has endured for so many millennia, and a reminder of the rich cultural heritage that continues to shape China today.。

After watching the documentary "Five Thousand Years of Chinese Characters," I was truly amazed by the rich history and cultural significance of Chinese characters. As a language enthusiast, I have always been fascinated by the beauty and complexity of written languages, and Chinese characters certainly embody both of these qualities. One thing that struck me the most was the evolution of Chinese characters over time. The documentary showed how the earliest forms of Chinese characters were pictographic, representing objects or ideas through simple drawings. For example, the character for "sun" (日) was originally a circle with a dot in the middle, resembling the shape of the sun. It is incredible to think that these ancient pictographs have transformed into the complex characters we see today.Furthermore, the documentary highlighted the importance of stroke order and balance in writing Chinese characters. Each stroke has a specific order and direction, and the balance between strokes is crucial for creating harmonious characters. This attention to detail and precision is truly remarkable and showcases the depth of Chinese calligraphy.Another aspect that fascinated me was the use ofradicals in Chinese characters. Radicals are the building blocks of characters and often provide clues to their meanings. For example, the radical "木" (wood) can be found in characters related to trees or plants, such as "林" (forest) or "森" (three). This systematic approach to character formation allows for easier memorization and understanding of the language.Chinese characters also have a unique ability to convey meaning through visual representation. For example, the character for "love" (爱) combines the radicals for "heart" (心) and "friend" (友), visually representing the conceptof affection towards a friend. This visual aspect of Chinese characters adds depth and symbolism to the language.Overall, watching "Five Thousand Years of Chinese Characters" deepened my appreciation for the complexity and beauty of Chinese characters. It is truly a testament to the ingenuity and creativity of the Chinese people. I am inspired to continue learning more about this fascinating language and its characters.
The exploration of the evolution and intricacies of Chinese characters, or Hanzi, is indeed a fascinating journey. These symbols are not just mere representations of sounds;they encapsulate the essence of an ancient civilization witha rich history spanning thousands of years. As I delved into the world of Hanzi, I was captivated by their unique abilityto convey meaning through a combination of strokes and radicals.Learning about the six writing principles – the SixBooks – which were introduced during the Qin dynasty, provided insight into the systematic approach to writing and the standardization of characters. The development of theseal script, clerical script, regular script, and cursivescript each played a significant role in shaping the modern Hanzi we recognize today. What struck me most was the understanding that Hanzi are not static; they evolve with time. Each dynasty left its mark on the language, with new characters being created to represent new concepts and ideas. The process ofsimplification in the 20th century, aimed at increasing literacy rates, highlighted the adaptability and responsiveness of the Chinese writing system to societal needs. The complexity of Hanzi is both its beauty and its challenge. Each character can be dissected into its phonetic element, which provides a clue to its pronunciation, and its radical, which often hints at its meaning. This depth adds layers of nuance to the language, making it a rich tapestry of stories, culture, and philosophy. Moreover, calligraphy, the art of writing Hanzi, takes this complexity to another level. It's not just about writing characters; it's about capturing the spirit and essence ofthe language through the flow and balance of ink on paper. It's a form of artistic expression that embodies the verysoul of Chinese culture.Understanding Hanzi also means appreciating thesubtleties of Chinese poetry and literature. The ability of poets to use characters that alliterate or have similar radicals to create layered meanings and aesthetic appeal adds a dimension to the reading experience. It's an intricatedance of words that requires both linguistic knowledge and cultural awareness. The study of Hanzi is not without its challenges. Withover 50,000 characters in existence, learning them can be a daunting task. However, the rewards are immense. Mastery of Hanzi opens doors to a world of historical texts, classical literature, and a deeper understanding of the Chinese mindset. In conclusion, the journey through the history and structure of Hanzi has been an eye-opening experience. It's atestament to the enduring legacy of Chinese culture and the power of language to shape and reflect society. The complexity and beauty of these characters are a testament to the ingenuity and creativity of the people who crafted them. Hanzi is not just a means of communication; it's a window into a rich and vibrant civilization.。
Title: The Beauty of Chinese Characters。
Chinese characters, known as Hanzi, possess a unique aesthetic beauty that has captivated people for centuries. Each stroke, each line, carries a profound history and cultural significance, making them not just a form of communication but also a form of art. In this essay, wewill explore the beauty of Chinese characters, delving into their history, structure, and cultural implications. To truly appreciate the beauty of Chinese characters, one must understand their origins. Chinese characters have a rich history dating back thousands of years, evolving from pictographs to the complex characters we see today. Each character tells a story, often rooted in ancient Chinese culture, mythology, or daily life. For example, the character for "mountain" (山) resembles three peaks, capturing the essence of towering mountains in a single symbol. Moreover, Chinese characters are not just arbitrary symbols; they are meticulously crafted works of art. Each stroke is carefully placed, balanced in proportion, and imbued with meaning. Take, for instance, the character for "beauty" (美), which consists of the radical for "big" (大) and the radical for "sheep" (羊). This combination symbolizes the beauty of a big flock of sheep, evoking images of pastoral landscapes and natural grace.Furthermore, the structure of Chinese characters reflects the harmony and balance valued in Chinese culture. Characters are composed of radicals, which are smaller components that convey meaning or sound. These radicals are arranged in a precise manner, creating a visual harmonythat is both elegant and functional. For example, the character for "harmony" (和) consists of the radicals for "mouth" (口) and "grain" (禾), suggesting the peaceful coexistence of people sharing a meal.In addition to their aesthetic appeal, Chinese characters carry profound cultural significance. They serveas a repository of Chinese history, literature, and philosophy, embodying the wisdom and creativity ofcountless generations. Through the study of characters, one can delve into the rich tapestry of Chinese civilization, from the philosophical depth of Confucian texts to thelyrical beauty of Tang poetry. Moreover, Chinese calligraphy elevates the beauty of characters to new heights. After watching the documentary "The Five Thousand Years of Chinese Characters," I was truly amazed at the rich history and cultural significance of Chinese characters. The documentary provided a comprehensive overview of the evolution of Chinese characters over the past five thousand years, from their origins as pictographs to their current complex forms. One of the most fascinating aspects of Chinese characters is their ability to convey meaning throughvisual representation. For example, the character "山"(shān) meaning "mountain" resembles the shape of a mountain, with three peaks and a base. This pictographic nature of Chinese characters not only makes them visually appealing but also helps in remembering and understanding their meanings.Furthermore, the documentary highlighted the importance of calligraphy in Chinese culture. Calligraphy is notmerely a form of writing but also an art form that requires skill, precision, and creativity. The strokes and brushwork used in calligraphy reflect the personality and emotions of the writer. It is truly amazing how a single stroke can change the entire meaning of a character.Additionally, the documentary shed light on theinfluence of Chinese characters on neighboring countries such as Japan and Korea. After watching the Chinese movie "Han Five Thousand," I was deeply moved and gained a lot from it. The film tells the story of a group of Chinese soldiers who fought bravely against the Japanese invaders during World War II. The movie made me realize the importance of patriotism and sacrifice. One of the things that struck me the most was the camaraderie among the soldiers. They were willing to risk their lives for their country and for each other. This reminded me of the saying "blood is thicker than water," which means that the bond between family or close friendsis stronger than anything else. The soldiers in the movie demonstrated this kind of loyalty and love for their comrades.Another aspect of the film that touched me was theresilience and determination of the Chinese people. Despite facing overwhelming odds, they never gave up. They fought with everything they had and refused to be defeated.

The broad and profound Chinese calligraphy
The forbidden city is the powerful core of Qin and Ming dynasty. During more than five hundreds years, about twenty-four emperors handle the affair of state inside and keep the operation of Chinese emperor. At the center of every basilica,it hang over emperor’s throne highly, but behind every throne,it must have the indispensable calligraphy work. Once the powerful emperor,of course, disappeared without a trace, only remained a lot of pairs of calligraphy. Those impressive characters nearly put itself above the throne. What are they? Such as Chinese character, art or creed, etc.
Simply speaking, the Chinese calligraphy refers to a way of writing Chinese character with write brush, consequently, how was a writing way granted with “the art of art”. Where did the Chinese calligraphy get such unique charm?
It is not separable between Chinese calligraphy and Chinese character’s specialty. A letter is a means of analyzing phonetics simply, however,it is no wonder that as a character in the world, only capable of achieving the artistic level, is Chinese character. Although before the printing,Europe also had a tradition of teaching calligraphy and had some people whose writings are very beautiful. However,it is not comparable to Chinese calligraphy. Because the art of calligraphy in China or east Asia was the cultivation of personality. When the ability of
Chinese calligraphy achieved skilfully, the regularity of stroke beauty generated naturally. As for the beauty of appearance and the fluency of writing,of course, was the objective of every character. For the glamour of Chinese character,a poet in Taiwai,Yu Guangzhong, compared between English and French,he described that the Chinese character was the soul of the Han nationality. Take the Chinese character “Yu”for example, when you are writing it,you would imagine a picture of raining, you could seek for the artistic beauty. With this unique representation features,it urged the writer to master skill,at the same time, strive for pursuing the artistic beauty.
In June,649 AD,the emperor LI Shiming lay on the deathbed,he used his last breath to adjure his son to get a thing,so,what was a thing that made the emperor Li Shiming could not part with? It was the famous orchid pavilion. The emperor Li was a prefect artist and an ambitious politician, hence he appreciated Wang Xingzhi very much. During his dominance,he improved the civil-service examination system, changed the tradition idea of family status. The Tang civil-service examination system carried out the system of writing depend on officer. Why the emperor Li Shiming appreciated Wang Xizhi so much? One viewpoint is that he want to curl people’s hearts and minds, mostly for nobility and people in Jiang Nan region. Yan Zhenqing was a great calligrapher and politician,he contributed to maintain the country unity. He created “Yan Ti”,people
who studied “Yan Ti” could write the Chinese character big enough,it had a spectacular beauty inside. However, how did we view the calligraphy of the opposite people, such as Cai Jing,Yan Song and Qin Hui,etc, they became outcasts in the gallery,so,our arts and society reflect higher spiritual yearnings.
In the Qin dynasty,of course, Su Shi was a genius,he was so diligent and liked imitating the orchid pavilion,so his writing was very good, but with the age growing, his writing style changed,it related to his political career. People respected his personality and also liked his writing, his writing get rid of power refinement and sublimate an artistic form of placing on ideals.
I repeated again, the Chinese character was only the art of art in the world,it did not reveal many kinds of writings and paintings,it revealed our soul of Chinese nationality.。
