Irish Dolphins May Have a Unique DialectIrish scientists monitoring dolphins living in a river estuaryin the southwest of the country believe they may have developed a unique dialect to communicate with each other. The Shannon Dolphin and Wildlife Foundation (SDWF) has been studying a group of up to 120 bottle-nose dolphins in the River Shannon using vocalizations collected on a computer in a cow shed near the River Shannon. As part of a research project, student Ronan Hickey digitizedand analyzed a total of 1,882 whistles from the Irish dolphins and those from the Welsh dolphins on a computer and separated them into six fundamental whistle types and 32 different categories. Of the categories, he found most were used by both sets of dolphins---but eight were only heard from the Irish dolphins.“We are building up a catalogue of the different whistle types they use and trying to associate them with behavior like foraging, resting, socializing and the communications of groups with calve,” project leader Simon Berrow said. “Ess entially we are building up what is like a dictionary of words they use or sounds they make.”Berrow, a marine biologist, said the dolphins’ clicks are used to find their way around and located prey. The whistles are communications. “They do a whole rang e of other sounds like barks, groans and kind of gunshot,” he said. “The gunshot is an intense pulse of sound. Sperm whales use it to stun their prey.”“When I first heard it I was surprised as I thought sperm whales were the only species who used it. We can speculate the dolphins are using it for the same reason as the sperm whales,” Berrow said.References in local legend indicate there have been dolphins in the Shannon estuary for generations and they may even have been resident there as far back as the 6th century. They are regularly seen by passengers on the Shannon ferry and an estimated 25,000 tourists every year take special sightseeing tours on local boasts to visit them.1. 第一篇The Smell of MoneyFor many years large supermarkets have been encouraging us to spend money by pumping the smell of freshly-baked bread into their stories. Now Dale Air, a leading firm of aroma (香气) consultants, has been approached by Barclay’s Bank to develop suitable artificial smells for their banks. Researchers have suggested that surrounding customers with the “smell if money” will encourage them to feel relaxed and optimistic and give them added confidence in the bank’s security and professionalism. But before a smell can be manufactured and introduced into banks’air conditioning systems. It must be identified and chemically analyzed, and this has proved to be difficult. The problem is that banknotes-and coins tend to pick up the smell of their surroundings. So cash that has been sitting in a cash register at a fishmonger’s (鱼贩) will smell of fish, and banknotes used to pay for meals in restaurants will tend to smell of food.It may be a challenge, but aroma experts have little doubt that the use of artificial smells can be an effective form of subconscious advertising. Lunn Poly, a British travel company, introduced the smell of coconuts (椰子) into its travel agencies and saw a big increase in spending by holiday makers. Many cafes now have electric dispensers (自动售货机) that release the smell of freshly roasted coffee near their entrances, subtly encouraging customers to come in and have a drink or snack. Evenprestigious car maker Rolls-Royce has been spraying the inside of its cars to enhance the smell of the leather seats.“The sense of smell is probably the most basic and primitive of all human senses,” explains researcher Jim O’Rordan. “ There is a direct pathway from the olfactory (嗅觉的) organs in the nose to the brain.” It is certainly true that most people find certain smells incredibly strong, stringing memories and feelings in a way that few other stimulants (刺激物) can rival. It is a phenomenon marketing consultants have long recognized, but until recently have been unable to harness. “We’ve made great progress but the technology of odour production is still in its infancy,” says O’Riordan, “Who knows where it will take us.”31. Artificial smells have NOT been used inA cafesB banksC travel agenciesD supermarkets32. Researchers believe that introducing the “smell of money” into banks will encourage peopleA to spend moneyB to feel confident about banksC to earn more moneyD to withdraw money from banks33. The difficulty of producing the “smell of money” lies in thatA people’s attitudes toward money are differentB it’s hard to identify and analyze itC no technology can do itD experts have no motive34. The word “harness” in the last paragraph is closest in meaning toA seeB studyC controlD understand35. Researchers thinkA artificial smells help to improve people’s memoryB the technology to produce artificial smells is in the early stageC artificial smells are harmfulD the production of artificial smells is profitably第二篇Spoilt for Choice(A级)Choice, we are given to1 believe, is a right. In daily life, people have come to expect endless situations about which they are required to make decisions one way or another. In the main2, these are just irksome moments at work which demand some extra energy or brainpower, or during lunch breaks like choosing which type of coffee to order or indeed which coffee shop to go to. But sometimes selecting one option as opposed to another can have serious or lifelong repercussions. More complex decision-making is then either avoided, postponed, or put into the hands of the army of professionals, Iifestyle coaches, lawyers, advisors, and the like. waiting to lighten the emotional burden for a fee2. But for a good many4 people in the world, in rich and poor countries, choice is a luxury, not a right. And for those who think they are exercising their right to make choices, the whole system is merely an illusion, createdby companies and advertisers wanting to sell their wares5.The main impact of endless choice in people’s lives is anxiety. Buying something as basic as a coffee pot is not exactly simple. Easy access to a wide range of consumer goods induces a sense of powerlessness, even paralysis, in many people, ending in the shopper giving up and walking away6, or just buying an unsuitable item that is not really wanted in order to solve the problem and reduce the unease. Recent surveys in the United Kingdom have shown that a sizeable proportion of electrical goods bought per household are not really needed. The advertisers and the shareholders of the manufacturers are, nonetheless, satisfied. It is not just their availability that is the problem, but the speed with which new versions of products come on the market. Advances in design and production mean that new items are almost ready by the time that goods hit the shelves7. Products also need to have a short lifespan so that the public can be persuaded to replace them within a short time. The classic example is computers which are almost obsolete once they are bought. At first, there were only one or two available from a limited number of manufacturers, but now there are many companies all with not only their own products but different versions of the same machine. This makes selection a problem. Gone are the days when one could just walk with ease. into a shop and buy one thing8; no choice, no anxiety. The plethora of choice is not limited to consumer items. With the greater mobility of people around the world, people have more choice about where they want to live and work —a fairly recent phenomenon. In the past, nations migrated across huge swathes of the earth in search of food, adventure, and more hospitable environments. Whole nations crossed continents and changed the face of history, So the mobility ofpeople is nothing new. The creation of nation states and borders9 effectively slowed this process down.36. Sometimes people ask professionals to help them make decisions becauseA the decisions may have serious impact on their livesB only professionals have the right to do thatC they have sufficient money to payD they have emotional problems37. When people cannot easily decide what to buy, which of the following is the least possible choice?A Giving upB Walking awayC Buying an unsuitable itemD Seeking advice38. Why do products have a short lifespan nowadays?A They are of poor quality.B They are quickly replaced with new ones.C They have too many versions.D They are not designed by computers.39. How does migration today differ from that of the past?A People now migrate to find better jobs.B People now migrate for better life.C People now migrate for better environments.D People now have more choice about where to migrate.40. Which of the following best expresses the writer’s view on choice?A Better more choice than no choiceB Better no choice than more choiceC All choice is easyD More choice, more anxiety第三篇Cell Phones: Hang Up or Keep Talking?Millions of people are using cell phones today. In many places it is actually considered unusual not to use one. In many countries, cell phones are very popular with young people. They find that the phones are more than a means of communication—having a mobile phone shows that they are cool and connected. The explosions around the world in mobile phone use make some health professional worried. Some doctors are concerned that in the future many people may suffer health problems from the use of mobile phones. In England, there has been a serous debate about this issue. Mobile phone companies are worried about the negative publicity of such ideas. They say that there is no proof that mobile phones are bad for your health. On the other hand, why do some medical studies show changes in the brain cells of some people who use mobile phones? Signs of change in the issues of the brain and head can be detected with modern scanning (扫描) equipment. In one case, a traveling salesman had to retire at a young age because of serious memory loss. He couldn’t remember even simple tasks. He would often forget the name of his own son. This man used to talk on his mobile phone for about six hours a day, every day of his working week, for a couple of years. His family doctor blamed his mobile phone use, but his employer’s doctor didn’t agree. What is it that makes mobile phones potentially harmful? The answer is radiation.High-tech machines can detect very small amounts of radiation from mobile phones. Mobile phone companies agree that there is some radiation, but they say the amount is too small to worry about. As the discussion about their safety continues, it appears that it’s best to use mobile phones less often. Use your regular phone if you want to talk for a long time. Use your mobile phone only when you really need it. Mobile phones can be very useful and convenient, especially in emergencies. In the future, mobile phones may have a warning label that says they are bad for your health. So for now, it’s wise not to use your mobile phone too often41. People buy cell phones for the following reasons EXCEPT thatA they’re popularB they’re cheapC they’re usefulD they’re convenient42. The world “detected” in paragraph 3 could be best replaced byA curedB removedC discoveredD caused43. The salesman retired young becauseA he disliked using mobile phonesB he was tired of talking on his mobile phoneC he couldn’t remember simple tasksD his employer’s doctor persuaded him to44. On the safety issue of mobile phones, the manufacturing companiesA deny the existence of mobile phone radiationB develop new technology to reduce mobile phone radiationC try to prove that mobile phones are not harmful to healthD hold that the amount of radiation is too small to worry about45. The writer’s purpose of writing this article is to advise peopleA to buy mobile phonesB to update regular phonesC to use mobile phones less oftenD to stop using mobile phones答案解析:第一篇阅读理解:the smell of money31. period in all these long centuries of which we boast when an absolute guarantee against invasion, still less against serious raids, could have been given to our people. In the days of Napoleon the same wind which would have carried his transports across the Channel might have driven away the blockading fleet. There was always the chance, and it is that chance which has excited and befooled the imaginations of many continental tyrants. Many are the tales that are told.We are assured that novel methods will be adopted, and when we see the originality of malice, the ingenuity of aggression, which our enemy displays,we may certainly prepare ourselves for every kind of novel stratagem and every kind of brutal and treacherous manoeuvre.I think that no idea is sooutlandish that it should not be considered and viewed with a searching, but at the same time,I hope, with a steady eye.We must never forget the solid assurances of sea power and those which belong to air power if it can be locally exercised.I have, myself, full confidence that if all do their duty,if nothing is neglected, and if the best arrangements are made,as they are being made,we shall prove ourselves once again able to defend our island home,to ride out the storm of war,and to outlive the menace of tyranny,if necessary for years,if necessary alone. At any rate, that is what we are going to try to do.That is the resolve of His Majesty's government-every man of them. That is the will of parliament and the nation. The British empire and the French republic, linked together in their cause and in their need, will defend to the death their native soil, aiding each other like good comrades to the utmost of their strength.Even though large tracts of Europe and many old and famous states have fallen or may fall into the grip of the Gestapo and all the odious apparatus of Nazi rule,we shall not flag or fail.We shall go on to the end,we shall fight in France,we shall fight on the seas and oceans,we shall fight with growing confidence and growing strength in the air,we shall defend our island, whatever the cost may be,we shall fight on the beaches,we shall fight on the landing grounds,we shall fight in the fields and in the streets,we shall fight in the hills;we shall never surrender, and even if,which I do not for a moment believe, this island or a large part of it were subjugated and starving, then our empire beyond the seas, armed and guarded by theBritish fleet, would carry on the struggle, until,in God's good time, the new world, with all its power and might, steps forth to the rescue and the liberation of the old.16.Throughout Britain's history, there has been no guarantee that an invasion would not happen.A.RightB.WrongC.Not mentioned17.Napoleon and his army once crossed the English game.2."It's hard for me,because I'm a fan of basketball,"Houston point guard Rafer Alston told the Houston Chronicle newspaper after McGrady's44-point performance against Utah on January5."When he's shooting the ball like that, a lot of times I'm standing there watching and,all of a sudden,[the other team's] getting the ball and going on a fast break, and I'm getting yelled at by the coach."Indeed,McGrady's body control, his energy, his shooting-watching these are like watching an artist at work, blending colours, constructing sentences,or playing music.3.Unfortunately,McGrady,27,hasn't always been on the job.Already this season,he's missed seven games with back spasms. After Yao Ming was injured on Dec.23,it appeared Houston would be without both of its stars.McGrady, however, returned three days later and has been playing well ever since, scoring more than30points in each of the last six games,as of Tuesday.Houston can't seem to get on without him. When McGrady was injured, the Rockets won two and lost five.4."Listen,there are only four or five people on the entire planet that can do the things he can do with the basketball,"forward Shane Battier said of McGrady."From a fan's perspective-and we're fans even though we're players-it's really fun to watch him do that."From a player's perspective, his game can affect the entire team.No question. We see him,and we get excited, and that pumps us up.He keeps making shots, and suddenly it seems to become easier for everybody."5.But it won't,really.Houston has just begun an important stretch on their schedule.Four of the next seven games will be played away from Houston-and without Yao.Six of the games will be against teams with winning records. Opponents will double-team McGrady in an attempt to dull the impact of his art. Instead of watching,McGrady's teammates will need to create a little art of their own.23.Paragraph2C.24.Paragraph3D.25.Paragraph4B.26.Paragraph5A.A.Necessity for the Teammates to Improve Their Own SkillsB.Evaluation from Two Different PerspectivesC.Spectacular Performance on the CourtD.Players Houston Can't Do WithoutE.Yao Ming's PerformanceF.McGrady's Injury27.McGrady plays basketball so well A.28.Yao Ming missed several games D.29.There are very few people on the Earth C.30.Everyone will have to contribute E.A.that his temmates cannot help admiring himB.that he is often yelled at by the coachC.who can play basketball so wellD.because he had been injuredE.if Houston hopes to winF.since he returned第四部分:阅读理解第一篇Youth Emancipation in SpainThe Spanish Government is so worried about the number of young adults still living with their parents that it has decided to help them leave the nest.Around55per cent of people aged18-34in Spain still sleep in their parents' homes, says the latest report from the country's state-run Institute of Youth. To coax(劝诱)young people from their homes, the institute started a"Youth Emancipation(解放)programme this month. The programme offers guidance in finding rooms and jobs.Economists blame young people's family dependence on the precarious(不稳定的)labour market and increasing housing prices.Housing prices have risen17 per cent a year since2000.Cultural reasons also contribute to the problem, say sociologists.Family tiesin south Europe-Italy,Portugal and Greece-are stronger than those in middle and north Europe, said Spanish sociologist Almudena Moreno Minguez in her report"The Late Emancipation of Spanish Youth:Keys for Understanding"."In general, young people in Spain firmly believe in the family as the main body around which their private life is organized,"said Minguez. In Spain-especially in the countryside,it is not uncommon to find entire groups of aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews(外甥/侄子)all living on the same street. They regularly get together for Sunday dinner.Parents'tolerance(宽容)is another factor.Spanish parents accept late-night partying and are wary of setting bedtime rules."A child can arrive home at whatever time he wants. If parents complainhe'll put up a big fight and call the father a Fascist,"said Jose Antonio Gomez Yanez,a sociologist at Carlos III University in Madrid.Mothers'willingness to do children's household chores worsens the problem. Dioni-sio Masso,a60-year-old in Madrid, has three children in their20s.The eldest,28,has a girlfriend and a job.But life with mum is good."His mum does the wash and cooks for him;in the end,he lives well," Masso said.31.The"Youth Emancipation"programme aims at helping young peopleA.fight for freedomB.live in an independent wayC.fight against social injusticeD.get rid of family responsibilities32.It can be inferred from paragraph5that family ties are stronger in Portugal than inA.FinlandB.GreeceC.SpainD.Italy33.Young people's family dependence can be attributed to all the following factors EXCEPTA.parent's toleranceB.housing problemsC.cultural traditionsD.unwillingness to get married34.Which of the following statements is NOT true of Dinoisio Masso?A.She is60years old.B.She has a boyfriend.C.She has three children.D.She lives in Madrid.35.The phrase"wary of"in paragraph8could be best replaced byA.tired ofB.afraid ofC.cautious aboutD.worried about第二篇Road Trip VacationsIt's summer. In the United States,it's the season of swimming pools, barbeques, camping and road trips.Road trip vacations where the car journey is part of the fun are especially popular with college students, who like to explore the country on wheels. These budget trips are ideal for students who often have plenty of free time but little money."Ever since I went to college,I've been traveling around a lot, exploring the country,"said Austin Hawkins,a19-year-old college student from New York. This summer,Hawkins and his friends have spent weekends traveling in New England. The best part about car trips, said Hawkins,is that you can be spontaneous. "On a road trip,if you get interested in things you see along the way you can stop and explore."Matt Roberts,a20-year-old student from Ohio who drove to Montreal, Canada, agrees."With road trips you don't have to plan in advance, you can just get into a car and drive."Even with high gas prices, driving with friends is cheaper than flying. Roberts paid about40dollars for gas,but a round trip plane ticket would have cost nearly400dollars.Driving trips first became popular in the1920s.Newly paved roads andimproved, cars made it possible to travel longer distances.Motels started appearing outside cities.By the1950s,car ownership became the norm.Construction of the US interstate highway system began in1956and motel and restaurant chains popped up everywhere making long distance trips easier.Today, the US has the highest car ownership rate in the world.Only8 percent of American homes have no car, according to the most recent US census.Though many college students don't own a car, most have access to one.On many of Hawkins'trips, they used a borrowed van.Hawkins'most memorable road trip took place over spring break. He and two friends drove from New York to New Orleans to volunteer, helping rebuild the city after Hurricane Katrina hit it last July. They crossed the country in two days and slept in their car in church parking lots.Roberts'road trip to Canada last winter was even more eventful.Upon arriving in Montreal, they were lost in a blizzard and shivering in the-25°cold. To find their hotel, they turned on a laptop and drove around in circles until they found a spot with wireless Internet coverage."I know we should have planned better, but we're young. Now,when I see those guys I always say:'Remember when we were lost in the snow storm!'I'll never forget that."36.Traveling on wheels is most popular among peoplewho have cars37.What will Hawkins do when he sees something interesting on a road trip?A.He will turn back.B.He will drive around.C.He will stop to explore.D.He will stop exploring.38.When did motels suddenly appear everywhere?A.After the work to build the interstate highway system started.B.When driving trips became popular.C.After many roads were paved.D.After new cars were made.39.Which of the following words can best describe Hawkins'trip to New Orleans?A.Eventful.B.Colourful.C.Delightful.D.Unforgettable.40.The word"blizzard"in paragraph12meansA.snow storm.B.hurricane.C.mist.D.fog.第三篇Tightened Visa RegulationsAccording to South Korea's new visa regulations, native speakers of English who intend to teach English in South Korea will be required to undergo criminal record checks, medical and drug tests, provide sealed academic transcripts and have their university diplomas inspected,The Korea Times has reported. The tightened regulations will affect an estimated17,000foreigners that hold E-2 visas specifically for foreign language teachers. The most controversial requirement is that English teachers residing outside South Korea will have to have an interview at a South Korean embassy before taking up their teaching posts. For applicants living in remote areas in Canada, Australia or the US,this is an additional travel burden.Meanwhile, foreign teachers currently living in South Korea must leave the country after theirone-year contracts end and renew their visas at a South Korean embassy in their home country or third country. Before the changes, they could renew their visas by visiting a neighboring country and return without additional documentation. The visa changes are a reaction to public concern about the suitability of some foreign teachers.A report from the South Korean Ministry of Education and Human Resources Development shows between2001and August of this year, 1,481foreign language teachers have been caught for a range of offenses including forged degrees, visa violations and general lawbreaking. But the changes are likely to slow up the supply of teachers to South Korea'sEnglish language education sector.According to Michael Duffy, manager of a teacher placement service in South Korea, applicants have to spend a few hundred dollars and several months on getting affidavits for documents."South Korea has put up too many hoops to jump through,"he said, adding that foreigners would seek work elsewhere. Most foreigners wonder if the experience of working in South Korea will be worth the burden of the paper work and increasing restrictions."I don't think(South)Korea has thought this through," said Scott McInnis,a Canadian teacher based in Incheon near Seoul."This is a reactionary move by the government that will have strong implications for the EFL community."As part of efforts to ease the discontent, the South Korean Ministry of Justice has granted a three-month grace period for current E-2visa holders to prepare the necessary documents.41.Which of the following is NOT required of an E-2visa applicant?A.to pass a Korean language testB.to undergo a medical testC.to provide sealed school reportsD.to undergo a drug test41.A to pass a Korean language test42.C visit a neighboring country if they wanted to renew their visas43.C subversive activities44.What does EFL refer to?D English as a foreign language45.The new visa policy aims atB.improving foreign language teaching in South Korea.第五部分:补全短文My Life at RendaI learned very quickly that being a teaching assistant(TA)at the University of Iowa would be different from life as a teacher at Renmin University.________________(46)Eyes staring, mouths open, students examining my big nose, hands nervous, people whispering while I wrote my name on the blackboard. At Iowa, when my first classes began, half my students still hadn't arrived. Cities “Worse to live in Than 20 Years ago”One thousand people were surveyed about a ranged of issue which affect cities ,and the remarkable findings show that life in today's mega-cities is so stressful that at least two-thirds of those currently living in big cities would like to relocate to the countryside or a small town. The stress of the getting from A to B in big cities is at the top of the list of problems. For many people, the daily commute (通勤) to work is a source of frustration. 40% of the people in the survey have suffered from road rage while stuck in traffic on the way to work. The cost of public transport is also a serious problem. Many people think the price of underground and bus travel is too high and that they have to devote more than 10% of their salary to transport costs. The general cost of living in cities is another problem. The high property prices in most big cities put buying a property out of reach of most first-time buyers. Many young people are priced out of the housing market, and have to take in lodgers to make ends meet, or rent over-priced flats miles away from the city centre. In London, for instance, the price of buying even a one-bedroom flat is so prohibitive that many have given up even considering putting money aside for a deposit.Another issue facing people who live in cities is rising crime. Crime rates have rocketed in many big cities, and many say there are several dangerous no-go areas in their city. Fear of crime is on the increase - street crimes, such as mugging and assault, are now very common - and many are afraid of going out at night alone. Many were also concerned by the lack of green spaces and playfacilities for children. Most major conurbations (有卫星城的大都市) surveyed have a far smaller number of parks and gardens than a generation ago. Planning permission seems to have been given for an ever-greater number of supermarkets, office developments and apartments on sites where there were previously green spaces. Many of the respondents in the survey said they felt stressed and suffocated (窒息) in the city, a problem which is compounded by pollution. And finally, the majority of people in the survey were fed up with the constant noise pollution - the roar of traffic, the sound of loud music blaring (发刺耳声) out of a neighbour's window, and the constant sound ofactivity. It is not surprising, then, that the levels of stress-related illnesses among people who live in cities are higher than ever before.Big cities, once a mecca (朝拜的地方) for ambitious people seeking fame and fortune, are now less and less popular among people of all ages. Perhaps the 21st century is set to be the century of the small town and the countryside. .16 Most people in the survey who live in big cities would like to move somewhere smaller.A RightB WrongC Not mentioned17 Many people in the survey think public transport is reasonably priced.A RightB WrongC Not mentioned18 It is difficult to buy a flat in London because of the cost.A RightB WrongC Not mentioned19 The crime rate has remained stable in recent years. .A RightB WrongC Not mentioned20 There are fewer green areas in cities than there used to be.A RightB WrongC Not mentioned21 London has had some success in reducing pollution.A RightB WrongC Not mentioned22 Noise pollution is seen as a big problem by most people in the survey.
