US-DPRK( Democratic People’s Republic of Korea) relations have become a factor that affects the stability in Asia, with the talks on DPRK’s nuclear programme issue travelling along a bumpy road. Revolving around the nuclear issue, disputes between the United States and the Republic of Korea crop up frequently, estranging the two allies. Sins-US relations are getting increasingly complex and different schools of thought inside the United States clash with each other over how to deal with a fast “rising China”. The China policy, to a certain extent, has evolved into a bottleneck for the United States’Asia policy. The Taiwan question becomes ever pressing in the post-Cold-War period, but the United States has so far failed to come up with an effective way to address the situation. In Southeast Asia and South Asia, the US anti-terror campaigns have achieved little, and instead served to distance the United States from the Muslim masses in the region. Thousands upon thousands of US troops are stuck in the quagmire of Iraq. There seems no light at the end of the tunnel on theissue of Iran’s nuclear undertakings. In the face of all this, US Asia experts have voiced their dissatisfaction over US Asia policy. They generally come to the conclusion that the US Asia policy lags behind the developments and that the definition of the US role in Asia is disorientated. The conclusion is drawn against the background of Asia’s fast changing political, economic and security situations. Strong bias has always blurred the US analysis of international politics, often leading to misjudgement and miscalculation. Confrontation, for example, dominated Sino-US relations for 22 years after 1949, when the People’s Republic of China was founded. This is because US policy-makers understood the event as an outcome of the Soviet Union’s exporting of revolution, thinking China would go along steadily with the “Big Brother” concept for decades to come. The United States paid dearly for the confrontation. The US involvement in Viet Nam offers another example. Ho Chih Minh’s drive for national unification was misread as the expansion of communism in Southeast Asia. Large numbers of American troops were committed to “contain”the “expansion.”Again, the United States paid dearly. The United States, it seems to me, is now misreading China’s fast development. China’s high-speed economic growth is bringing wealth and prosperity to one-fifth of the world’s population. But some American political elite think the rise of China poses a threat and challenge to the US supremacy. They are haunted by how to come up with the best way to deal with China’s rise, and hence the hesitation between engagement and containment. This, in turn, helps explain the volatility of US-China relations. Apart from its misjudgement of the outside world, the wrong definition of its role in Asia is also responsible for policy errors. Desire for hegemony has dominated US Asia policy since World War II. Seeking supremacy is at the core of policy-making considerations. During the Cold War period, Washington claimed “containment of communism,”but they were actually in pursuit of US hegemony. Driven by these hegemonic impulses, the United States got involved first in the Korean War and then the Viet Nam War, taking upon itself commitments that far outstripped its strength. After the failure of Viet Nam, the United States had to reshape its Asia policy, seeking strategic balance instead of supremacy. The change of role helped free it from a predicament. When the Cold War ended in the early 1990s, the United States faced the test again in terms of defining its role in Asia. The Clinton administration wanted to use US values, US models of development and security concepts, the so-called “soft power”, to shape regional politics, economics and security. It can be interpreted as applying new tools to play a leading role in Asia. After President George W. Bush assumed power, the United States’role was defined as a unilateral leader, which was intended to guard against any rising powers. The advent of the September 11 terrorist attacks changed the priorities of the US strategic agenda, but not the Bush administration’s yearning for US supremacy. All this helps bring about the situation that the United States’ Asia policy is increasingly distanced from the fast changing reality in Asia. The United States’ constructive role in Asian affairs would be in the interest of Asian countries as well as in its own. Correct US assessment of the reality in Asia is thus called for. First, it should be understood that Asian countries’co-operation in political and security affairs among themselves is being strengthened. They axe increasingly reluctant to be told what to do by outsiders. This kind of co-operation will help alter the political and economic landscapes of Asia and will also have a great impact on US-Asian relations. The economic co-operation among the 10+3(10 countries of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations plus China, Japan and the Republic of Korea) framework and the planned East Asia Summit are but just two examples in Asian countries’ intention of forming, a single community. Second, China’s development will not follow the old path of the newly emerging power replacing the old one, and will, therefore, not bring about the situation in which a hysteric arms race is set in motion because the parties involved fear to be left in a weaker position. Using the old-fashioned containment mentality to handle China-and Asia-related affairs is bound to end in tears. Third, Asian countries are becoming increasingly interdependent, whether in terms of economic co-operation or anti-terror campaigns. On the other hand, the United States is getting more and more dependent on other countries in many ways. This requires it to adapt to the fast changing situation in Asia. Fourth, the United States is powerful but not omnipotent. It won a war in Iraq but did not win peace. The United States cannot settle all the questions in Asia, let alone if it tries to do it all in its own way.2.The dispute on DPRK’s nuclear programme issue gives a negative influence on US-DPRK relations.A.YB.NC.NG正确答案:A解析:文章第二段指出围绕朝鲜核问题的谈判疏远了两国的关系,显然本题的论断说得也是这个意思。

And 87% think it is relaxing. About 68% of those surveyed disagreed with the opinion that reading is boring or old-fashioned.Over half teenagers interviewed said they read more than ten books a year. The results also show that middle school students read more books than high schoolers. Over 66% of teens like to read fiction, such as novels and stories. Over 26% are interested in non-fiction, such as history books. 64% of students listed reading stories about people my own age. That’s a favorite topic. Mysteries and detective stories came second on the list at 53%. Just under 50% said they were interested in reading about their own culture in tradition.Of the teenagers who participated in the survey, 49% said thatlibraries are where they get most of their books. However, many complain that their school libraries do not have enough up-to-date interesting books and magazines.Even though many teenagers in the US enjoy reading, they still have other interests. Today’s presentation will show how we see the development of the motor car in the short to medium term, and that is why we have invited all of you here today.Le t’s start with power. It’s clear that petrol-driven engines have no future. Already there are many alternative fuel vehicles on the market, powered by anything from solar power to natural gas. Some independent thinkers have even produced cars that run on vegetableoil. But as we all know, of all these alternative fuel vehicles, the most practical are electric vehicles. Sure, in the past electric vehicles have their problems, namely, a limited driving range, and very few recharging points, which limited their use. Now, however, recent developments in electric vehicle technology mean they can match conventional petrol engines in terms of performance and safety. Let’s not forget that electric vehicles are cleaner. Plus, importantly, the power source is rechargeable, so this does not involve using any valuable resources.Moving on to communications, very soon, cars will be linked to GPS satellites, so they’ll do all the driving for you. What controls remain for the users will be audio-based, so, for example, you’ll just have to say “a bit warmer”, and the air conditioning will adjust automatically. You’ll also be able to receive email, music and movies, all via an internet link. So just type in the destination you want, sit back, sleep, and watch your movie, whatever.Questions 23 to 25 are based on the passage you have just heard.Q23. What is the presentation mainly about?Q24. What used to restrict the use of electric vehicles?Q25. What does the speaker say about electric vehicles of today?。

We discuss here the major types of media used in advertising. We focus our attention on seven types of advertising: television, ne wspapers, radio, magazines, out-of-home. Internet, and direct mail. TelevisionTelevision is an attractive medium for advertising because it delive rs mass audiences to advertisers. When you consider that nearly thre e out of four Americans have seen the game show Who Wants to Be a Mi llionaire? you can understand the power of television to communicate with a large audience. When advertisers create a brand, for example, they want to impress consumers with the brand and its image. Television provides an ideal vehicle for this type of communication. But te leviseon is an expensive medium, and not all advertisers can afford to use it.Television's influence on advertising is fourfold. First, narrowcast ing means that television channels are seen by an increasingly narro w segment of the audience. The Golf Channel, for instance.is watched by people who play golf. Home and Garden Television is se en by those interested in household improvement projects. Thus, audi ences are smaller and more homogeneous(具有共同特点的) than they hav e been in the past. Second, there is an increase in the number of te levision channels available to viewers, and thus, advertisers. This has also resulted in an increase in the sheer number of advertisemen ts to which audiences are exposed. Third, digital recording devices allow audience members more control over which commercials they watc h. Fourth, control over programming is being passed from the network s to local cable operators and satellite programmers.Newspaper? After television, the medium attracting the next largest annual ad r evenue is newspapers. The New York Times, which reaches a national a udience, accounts for $1 billion in ad revenue annually, ii m increa sed its national circulation (发行量) by 40% and is now available for home delivery in ion ciues. Locally, newspapers are the largest ad vertising medium.Newspapers are a less expensive advertising medium than television a nd provide a way for advertisers to communicate a longer. more detai led message to their audience than they can through 48 hours, meaning newspapers are also a quick way of getting the massage out.Newspape rs are ofen the mostimportant form of news for a local community, a nd they develop a high degree of loyalty from local reader.RadioAdvertising on radio continues to grow Radio is often used in conjun ction with outdoor bill-boards (广告牌) and ihe Internet to reach ev en more customers than television. Advertisers are likely to use rad io because it is a less expensive medium than television, which mean s advertisers can afford to repeal their ads often. Internet compani es are also turning 10 radio advertising. Radio provides a way for a dvertisers to communicate with audience members at all times of the day.Consumers listen to radio on their way to school or work, at wor k, on the way home, and in the evening hours. Two major changes—satellite and Internet radio—will force radio ad vertisers to adapt their methods. Both of these radio forms allow li steners to tune in stations that are more distant than thelocal stations they could receive in the past. As a result, radio wi ll increasingly attract target audiences who live many miles apart.MagazinesNewsweeklies, women’s titles, and business magazines have all seen i ncreases in advertising because they attract the high-end market, ma gazines are popular with advertisers because of the narrow market th at they deliver. A broadcast medium such as network television attra cts all types of audience members, but magazine audiences are more h omogeneous, if you read sports illustrated, for example, you have mu ch in common with the magazine’s other readers. Advertisers see maga zines as an efficient way of reaching target audiencemembers. Advertiser using the print media-magazines and newspapers-will need to adapt to two main changes. First, the internet will bring larger audiences to local newspapers, these second. Advertisers will have t o understand how to use an increasing number of magazines for their target audiences. Although some magazines will maintain national aud iences, a large number of magazines will entertain narrower audience s.Out-of-home advertisingOut-of-home advertising. Also called place-based advertising, has be come an increasingly effective way of reaching consumers, who are mo re active than ever before. Many consumers today do not sit at home and watch television. Using billboards, newsstands, and bus shelters for advertising is an effective way of reaching these on-the-go con sumers. More consumers travel longer distances to and from work, whi ch also makes out-of-home advertising effective, technology has chan ged the nature of the billboard business, making it a more effective medium than in the past.Using digital printing, billboard companies can print a billboard in 2 hours, compared with 6 days previously. This allows advertisers m ore variety in the types of messages they create because they. Can change their messages more quickly.InternetAs consumers become more comfortable with online shopping, advertise rs will seek to reach this market As consumers get more of their new s and information from the Internet, the ability of television and r adio to get the word out to consumers will decrease. The challenge t o Internet advertisers Is to create ads that audience members rememb er.Internet advertising will play a more prominent role inorganizati ons' advertising in the near ftuture. Internet audiences tend to be quite homogeneous, but small. Advertisers will have to adjust their methods to reach these audiences and will have to adapt their persua sive strategies to the online medium as well.Direct mailA final advertising medium is direct mail, which uses mailings to co nsumers to communicate a client's message Direct mail includes newsl etters. postcards and special promotions. Direct mail is an effective way to build relationships with consumers. For many businesses.direct mail is the most effective from of advertising.1. Will We Run Out of Water?Picture a “ghost ship” sinking into the sand, left to rot on dry land by a receding sea. Then imagine dust storms sweeping up toxic pesticides and chemical fertilizers from the dry seabed and spewing them across towns and villages.Seem like a scene from a movie about the end of the world? For people living near the Aral sea (咸海) in Central Asia, it’s all too real. Thirty years ago, government planners diverted the rivers that flow into the sea in order to irrigate (provide water for ) farmland. As a result, the sea has shrunk to half its original size, stranding (使搁浅) ships on dry land. The seawater has tripled in salt content and become polluted, killing all 24 native species of fish.Similar large--scale efforts to redirect water in other parts of the world have also ended in ecological crisis, according to numerous environmental groups. But many countries continue to build massive dams and irrigation systems, even though such projects can create more problems than they fix. Why? People in many parts of the world are desperate for water, and more people will need more water in the next century.“Growing populations will worsen problems with water,” says Peter H.Gleick, an environmental scientist at the Pacific Institute for studies in Development, Environment, and Security, a research organization in California. He fears that by the year 2025, as many as one--third of the world’s projected (预测的) 8.3 billion people will suffer from water shortages.WHERE WATER GOESOnly 2.5 percent of all water on Earth is freshwater, water suitable for drinkingand growing food, says Sandra Postel, director of the Global Water Policy Project in Amherst, Mass. Two--thirds of this freshwater is locked in glaciers (冰山) and ice caps (冰盖). In fact, only a tiny percentage of freshwater is part of the water cycle, in which water evaporates and rises into the atmosphere, then condenses and falls back to Earth as precipitation (rain or snow). Some precipitation runs off land to lakes and oceans, and some becomes groundwater, water that seeps into the earth. Much of this renewable freshwater ends up in remote places like the Amazon river basin in Brazil, where few people live. In fact, the world’s population has access to only 12,500 cubic kilometers of freshwater—about the amount of water in Lake Superior(苏必利尔湖). And people use half of this amount already. “If water demand continues to climb rapidly,” says Postel, “there will be severe shortages and damage to the aquatic (水的) environment.”CLOSE TO HOMEWater woes(灾难) may seem remote to people living in rich countries like the United States. But Americans could face serious water shortages, too especially in areas that rely on groundwater. Groundwater accumulates in aquifers (地下蓄水层),layers of sand and gravel that lie between soil and bedrock. (For every liter of surface water, more than 90 liters are hidden underground.) Although the United States has large aquifers, farmers, ranchers, and cities are tapping many of them for water faster than nature can replenish(补充) it. In northwest Texas, for example, overpumping has shrunk groundwater supplies by 25 percent, according to Postel.Americans may face even more urgent problems from pollution. Drinking water in the United States is generally safe and meets high standards. Nevertheless, one in five Americans every day unknowingly drinks tap water contaminated with bacteria and chemical wastes, according to the Environmental Protection Agency. In Milwaukee, 400,000 people fell ill in 1993 after drinking tap water tainted with cryptosporidium (隐孢子虫),a microbe (微生物) that causes fever, diarrhea (腹泻) and vomiting.THE SOURCEWhere so contaminants come from? In developing countries, people dump raw (未经处理的) sewage(污水) into the same streams and rivers from which they draw water for drinking and cooking; about 250 million people a year get sick from water borne (饮水传染的) diseases. In developed countries, manufacturers use 100,000 chemical compounds to make a wide range of products.Toxic chemicals pollute water when released untreated into rivers and lakes. (Certain compounds, such as polychlorinated biphenyls (多氯化联二苯),or PCBs, have been banned in the United States.)But almost everyone contributes to water pollution. People often pour household cleaners, car antifreeze, and paint thinners (稀释剂) down the drain; all of these contain hazardous chemicals. Scientists studying water in the San Francisco Bay reported in 1996 that 70 percent of the pollutants could be traced to household waste.Farmers have been criticized for overusing herbicides and pesticides, chemicals that kill weeds and insects but insects but that pollute water as well. Farmers also usenitrates, nitrogen--rich fertilizer that helps plants grow but that can wreak havoc (大破坏) on the environment. Nitrates are swept away by surface runoff to lakes and seas. Too many nitrates “over enrich” these bodies of water, encouraging the buildup of algae, or microscopic plants that live on the surface of the water. Algae deprive the water of oxygen that fish need to survive, at times choking off life in an entire body of water.WHAT’S THE SOLUTION?Water expert Gleick advocates conservation and local solutions to water--related problems; governments, for instance, would be better off building small--scale dams rather than huge and disruptive projects like the one that ruined the Aral Sea.“More than 1 billion people worldwide don’t have access to basic cle an drinking water,” says Gleick. “There has to be a strong push on the part of everyone—governments and ordinary people—to make sure we have a resource so fundamental to life.”提示:在实考试卷中,8-10题在答题卡1上。

It is nearly 1.5 times as large as Texas, and extends 800miles (1,280 km) north from the United States border. It includes Canada'sentire west coast and the islands just off the coast. Most of British Columbia is mountainous, with long, rugged ranges runningnorth and south. Even the coastal islands are the remains of a mountain rangethat existed thousands of years ago. During the last Ice Age, this range wasscoured by glaciers until most of it was beneath the sea. Its peaks now showas islands scattered along the coast. The southwestern coastal region has a humid mild marine climate. Seawinds that blow inland from the west are warmed by a current of warm waterthat flows through the Pacific Ocean. As a result, winter temperaturesaverage above freezing and summers are mild. These warm western winds alsocarry moisture from the ocean.Inland from the coast, the winds from the Pacific meet the mountainbarriers of the coastal ranges and the Rocky Mountains. As they rise tocross the mountains, the winds are cooled, andtheir moisture begins tofall as rain. On some of the western slopes almost 200 inches (500 cm)of rain fall each year.More than half of British Columbia is heavily forested. On mountainslopes that receive plentiful rainfall, huge Douglas firs rise in toweringcolumns. These forest giants often grow to be as much as 300 feet (90 m)tall, with diameters up to 10 feet (3 m). More lumber is produced fromthese trees than from any other kind of tree in North America. Hemlock, red cedar, and balsam fir are among the other trees found in BritishColumbia.71. With which aspect of British Columbia is the passage primarily concerned?A) Its climate. B) Its culture.C) Its geography. D) Its history.72. In which part of British Columbia can a mild climate be found?A) In the southwest. B) Inland from the coast.C) In the north. D) On the entire west coast.73. B) Make them wet.C) Make them cool. D) Make them weak.Questions 76 to 80 are based on the following passage:When they advise your kids to"get an education"if you want to raise yourincome, they tell you only half the truth. What they really mean is to getjust enough education to provide manpower for your society, but not too muchthat you prove an embarrassment to your society. Get a high school diploma,at least. Without that, you are occupationally dead, unless your name happensto be George Bernard Shaw or Thomas Alva Edison and you can successfully dropout in grade school.Get a college degree, if possible. With a B.A., you are on the launchingpad (??è?¨|?§|??§ì). But now you have to start to put on the brakes. If you go for amaster's degree, make sure it is an M. B. A., and only from a first-rateuniversity. Beyond this, the famous law of diminishing returns (?¨¤??ì3?§o|¨?Y§|)begins to take effect.Do you know, for instance, that long-haul truck drivers earn more a yearthan full professors? Yes, the average 1977 salary for those truckers was??24,000, while the full professors managed to average just ??23,930.A Ph.D. is the highest degree you can get, but except in a few specializedfields such as physics or chemistry, where the degree can quickly be turned toindustrial or commercial purposes, you are facing a dim future. There are morePh.D.s unemployed or underemployed in this country than in any other partof the world by far.If you become a doctor of philosophy in English or history or anthropologyor political science or languages or - worst of all - in philosophy, you runthe risk of becoming overeducated for our national demands. Not for our needs, mind you, but for our demands.Thousands of Ph.D.s are selling shoes, driving cabs, waiting on tables andfilling out fruitless applications month after month. And then maybe taking ajob in some high school or backwater college that pays much less than thejanitor (§?§?) earns. You can equate the level of income with the level of education only sofar. Far enough, that is, to make you useful to the gross national product, but not so far that nobody can turn much of a profit on you.76. According to the writer, what the society expects of education is to turnout people who _______.A) will not be a shame to the societyB) will become skilled workersC) can take care of themselvesD) can meet the demands as a source of manpower77. If you are as gifted as Bernard Shaw or Edison, _______.A) you can get a high school diploma without difficultyB) you will be successful in a grade schoolC) you can be professionally successful without a diplomaD) the least you should do is to get a diploma78. Ph.D.s are most likely to _______.A) have difficulties getting properly employedB) be employed in the fields of commerce or industryC) have to fill out application forms month after month for othersD) work in schools or colleges with low pay79. Which of the following is NOT true?A) Bernard Shaw didn't finish high school, nor did Edison.B) There are far more Ph.D.s than the society demands.C) The higher your education level, the more money you'llearn.D) If you are too well-educated, you'll make things difficult for thesociety.80. The writer is critical of _______.A) the educational system B) the Ph.D.sC) the society D) the employersQuestions 81 to 85 are based on the following passage:Automobile drivers and passengers now face a new, unseen danger on theroad: the users of cellular mobile telephones. Looking at the phone whiledialing or speaking can prevent drivers from keeping their hands on thewheel and their eyes on the road; industry experts agree that drivers aremore likely to have an accident while using their phones. That fact hasexcited concern among highway safety organizations in the United States, and some want to ban cellular phones altogether. While manufacturers havenot yet come up with a cellular mobile phone that is completely "hands free",several companies have recently developed components that could make mobilephones less distracting -- and their users less accident prone.Voice Control Systems, Inc., based in Dallas, Tex., has developed amicroprocessor unit that allows standard cellular telephones to "dial"numbers at the sound of a human voice. The Voice Dialer unit is attachedto the phone's transmitter and receiver in the car's trunk. Programmedwith a limited vocabulary, it can respond only to digits and specificcontrol commands spoken by the users, who must pause a quarter of a secondbetween each digit or command. (Frequently dialed numbers can be preprog-rammed into simple, single command codes.) The driver picks up the handset, and begins calls by saying"Dial," followed by the number or command code;a synthesized voice will repeat the number sequence and place the calltold to "Send." A unique aspect of the Voice Dialer is that it is speakerindependent; the unit will respond to any voice regardless of gender, accent or tone.81. Cellular mobile telephones are telephone sets _________.A) used in carsB) capable of being moved in offices or at homeC) shaped like cellsD) controlled by human voices82. Drivers using cellular mobile telephones are prone to accidents because_____________.A) telephone conversation distracts users from drivingB) drivers are often not skillful enough to use themC) they are not reliableD) they are not "hands free"83. Which of the following statements is NOT true?A) The Voice Dialer unit is a device which dials numbers by humanvoice, rather than by hand.B) The Voice Dialer allows drivers to pay more attention on drivingwhile dialing.C) The Voice Dialer unit can make cellular mobile phones completely"hands free."D) The Voice Dialer was developed by Voice Control Systems, Inc.84. The Voice Dialer unit is programmed to respond to____________.A) what the user wants to sayB) a special vocabulary used by the driverC) various commands spoken by the userD) only the telephone numbers and specific control commands85. This passage centres on ___________.A) a new hazard on the roadB) different kinds of telephonesC) a safer car telephoneD) Voice Control Systems, IncQuestions 86 to 90 are based on the following passage:Having no language, infants cannot be told what they need to learn. Yetby the age of three they will have mastered the basic structure of theirnative language and will be well on their way to communicative competence.Acquiring their language is a most impressive intellectual feat. Studies ofhow children learn language generally agree that the most remarkable aspectof this feat is the rapid acquisition of grammar. Nevertheless, the ability of children to conform to grammatical rules is only slightly more wonderfulthan their ability to learn words. It has been estimated that the averagehigh school graduate in the United States has a reading vocabulary of 80,000words, which includes idiomatic expressions and proper names of people andplaces. This vocabulary must have been learned over a period of 16 years. From the figures, it can be calculated that the average child learns at arate of about 13 new words per day. Clearly a learning process of greatcomplexity goes on at a rapid rate in children.86. According to the passage, approximately how long does it take childrento learn the basic structure of their native language?A) One year. B) Three years.C) About two and half years. D) Thirteen years.87. What is the main subject of the passage?A) Language acquisition in children.B) Teaching languages to children.C) How to memorize words.D) Communicating with infants.88. B.A new device gathering information about buildings.
D.The placement of electrical outlets.
答案:A[听力原文]
What is the first thing you should know?
Questions 3 and 4 are based on the news report you have just heard. (如需获取本MP3听力录音请搜索标题名)
The device requires only one pass through a building to create a three-dimensional model of the structure. In other words, the model shows an object's height, width and depth. The device also is able to collect other valuable information related to the building's energy usage. The first thing you need to know is the exact shape of all rooms in the building. You have to consider the size and position of heating and cooling equipment, windows and doors. Another consideration is the placement of electrical outlet—the areas where electrically-operated equipment can be connected to the power supply.

For each of them there are four choices marked A), B), C) and D). You should decide on the best choice.Questions 21 to 25 are based on the following passage. The fridge is considered a necessity. It has been so since the 1960s when packaged food first appeared with the label: "store in the refrigerator."In my fridge less fifties childhood, I was fed well and healthily. The milkman came daily, the grocer, the butcher (肉商), the baker, and the ice-cream man delivered two or three times a week. The Sunday meat would last until Wednesday and surplus (剩余) bread and milk became all kinds of cakes. Nothing was wasted, and we were never troubled by rotten food. Thirty years on food deliveries have ceased, fresh vegetables are almost unobtainable in the country. The invention of the fridge contributed comparatively little to the art of food preservation. A variety of well-tried techniques already existed -- natural cooling, drying, smoking salting, sugaring, bottling...What refrigeration did promote was marketing -- marketing hardware and electricity, marketing soft drinks, marketing dead bodies of animals around the globe in search of a good price.Consequently, most of the world's fridges are to be found, not in the tropics where they might prove useful, but in the wealthy countries with mild temperatures where they are climatically almost unnecessary. Every winter, millions of fridges hum away continuously, and at vast expense, busily maintaining an artificially-cooled space inside an artificiallyheated house-while outside, nature provides the desired temperature free of charge. The fridge's effect upon the environment has been evident, while its contribution to human happiness has been insignificant, If you don't believe me, try it yourself, invest in a food cabinet and turn off your fridge next winter. You may miss the hamburgers (汉堡包), but at least you'll get rid of that terrible hum.21. The statement "In my fridge lees fifties childhood, I was fed well and healthily."?(Line 1, Para. 2) suggests that _______.A) the author was well-fed and healthy even without a fridge in his fiftiesB) the author was not accustomed to use fridges even in his fiftiesC) there was no fridge in the author's home in the 1950sD) the fridge was in its early stage of development in the 1950s22. Why does the author say that nothing was wasted before the invention of fridges?A) People would not buy more food than was necessary.B) Food was delivered to people two or three times a week.C) Food was sold fresh and did not get rotten easily.D) People had effective ways to preserve their food.23. Who benefited the least from fridges according to the author?A) Inventors.B) Consumers.C) Manufacturers.D) Traveling salesmen.24. Which of the following phrases in the fifth paragraph indicates the fridge's negative effect on the environment?A) "Hum away continuously"B) "Climatically almost unnecessary"C) "Artificially cooled space"D) "With mild temperatures"25. What is the author's overall attitude toward fridges?A) NeutralB) CriticalC) ObjectiveD) CompromisingQuestions 26 to 30 are based on the following passage. The human brain contains 10 thousand million cells and each of these may have a thousand connections. Such enormous numbers used to discourage us and cause us to dismiss the possibility of making a machine with humanlike ability, but now that we have grown used to moving forward at such a pace we can be less sure. Quite soon, in only 10 or 20 years perhaps, we will be able to assemble a machine as complex as the human brain, and if we can we will. It may then take us a long time to render it intelligent by loading in the right software (软件) or by altering the architecture but that too will happen.I think it certain that in decades, not centuries, machines of silicon (硅) will arise first to rival and then exceed their human ancestors. Once they exceed us they will be capable of their own design. In a real sense they will be able to reproduce themselves. Silicon will have ended carbon's long control. And we will no longer be able to claim ourselves to be the finest intelligence in the known universe. As the intelligence of robots increases to match that of humans and as their cost declines through economies of scale we may use them to expand our frontiers, first on earth through their ability to withstand environments, harmful to ourselves. Thus, deserts may bloom and the ocean beds be mined. Further ahead, by a combination of the great wealth this new age will bring and the technology it will provide, the construction of a vast, man-created world in space, home to thousands or millions of people, will be within our power.26. In what way can we make a machine intelligent?A) By making it work in such environments as deserts, oceans or space.B) By working hard for 10 or 20 years.C) By either properly programming it or changing its structure.D) By reproducing it.27. What does the writer think about machines with human-like ability?A) He believes they will be useful to human beings.B) He believes that they will control us in the future.C) He is not quite sure in what way they may influence us.D) He doesn't consider the construction of such machines possible.28. The word carbon (Line 4, para. 2) stands for "_______"A) intelligent robotsB) a chemical elementC) an organic substanceD) human beings29. A robot can be used to expand our frontiers when _______.A) its intelligence and cost are beyond questionB) it is able to bear the rough environmentC) it is made as complex as the human brainD) its architecture is different from that of the present ones30. It can be inferred from the passage that _______A) after the installation of a great number of cells and connections, robots will be capable of self reproduction.B) with the rapid development of technology, people have come to realize the possibility of making a machine withhuman-like ability.C) once we make a machine as complex as the human brain, it will possess intelligence.D) robots will have control of the vast, man-made world in space.大学英语四级试卷模拟五试卷答案对照版(一)相关内容:。

Part II Reading Comprehension (Skimming and Scanning)Directions: In this part, you will have 15 minutes to go over the passage quickly and answer the questions on Answer sheet 1.Bears in the WoodsDespite the troubled markets, the world economy is still relatively strong. Just don't bet your house on it. The woods and the marketIf you meet a bear in the woods, try not to panic or scream; on no account should you turn your back and run. As markets around the world have turned grizzly over the past two weeks, some investors seem to have forgotten the old hikers' maxim. After three years of big gains, many stockmarkets have dropped by 10% or more in less than ten days. The loudest complaints have echoed around emerging markets and commodities. Europe has surrendered most of this year's gains. Americans have so far escaped lightly, but they would be unwise to take comfort. Their housing market, the recent rock of their economy, is where a much grizzlier creature lies in wait. Most investors tend to look first at equity marketsand they have certainly had a good run virtually everywhere. Yet a repeat of the slump after the bursting of the dotcom bubble in 2001—4)2 remains highly unlikely. In 2000 shares were wildly overvalued. Today price/eamings ratios in most stockmarkets are near, if not below, their long-term averages. This suggests that the slide in shares could be short-lived.Inflation or interest rates? So what has caused this burst of volatility? One popular explanation points to the fears of rising inflation and hence higher interest rates. Yet this sits oddly with the decrease in bond yields and the gold price over the past week: if inflation were the reason, you would expect both to have risen. The real puzzle is not why volatility has suddenly increased, but why it had been so low in the past year or so. The answer seems to be an abundance of cheap money, which attracted investors into satisfaction. Now they are starting to demand higher returns on riskier assets. Emerging-market equities, not (generally safer) bonds, suffered the biggest loss in the past week. It could be a healthy correction, though. What helped us to achieve growth with low inflation?Indeed, the recent sensitivity need not harm the world economy, which even bears admit has performed greatly. World GDP has grown at an annual rate of more than 4% for 11 consecutive quarters. This is the strongest upturn for more than 30 years. Yet global inflation remains historically low. Strong growth with mild inflation is all the more amazing given the tripling of oil prices since 2003. Past off-price shocks have caused stagflation. The world has so far shrugged off higher oil prices with the help of two powerful economic forces. The first is the opening up and integration into the world economy of China, India and other emerging economies, This has given the biggest boost to global supply since the industrial revolution. That, in mm, has magnified the second stimulus. Since the bursting of the dotcom bubble, central banks have pumped out cheap money. In 2003 average short-term interest rates in the G7 economies fell to their lowest in recorded history. Because inflation remained low, the central banks have been slow to mop up the excess liquidity. Cheap money has encouraged households, especially American ones, to borrow and spend lavishly. It is not just house prices that have surged ahead; cheap money has encouraged investors across the world to take bigger risks, creating several smaller bubbles. Together the huge boost to supply (from emerging economies) and the huge boost to demand (from easy money) have offset the burden of higher oil prices, creating the once-impossible combination of robust growth and modest inflation.Don*t panicThe era of cheap money is nearing an end. For the first time in 15 years, the three big central banks are now all tightening monetary policy. The European Central Bank has already followed the Federal Reserve's lead in raising interestrates. Only now are the markets realising that interest rates may rise by more than they had expected. In the long term, rates should be roughly equal to nominal GDP growth, but in America and elsewhere they are still well below it. Optimists argue that America's economy is coping well with rising interest rates, but it isn't really aware of tight money yet. Without easy credit, dear oil will cause more pain.Until recently, financial markets appeared to be betting that the Goldilocks economy一neither too hot, nor too cold 一was safe from the bears. The troubled markets are a reminder that sooner or later growth will slow or inflation will rise. Inflation is not about to spiral upwards but with diminishing spare capacity, it could gradually rise. America has an extra risk because Wall Street suspects that Ben Bernanke, the Fed's new chairman, may be a soft touch on inflation. If that suspicion persists, he will need to raise interest rates by more than otherwise一or investors will do the tightening for him by pushing up bond yields. That would make other assets look expensive. It is in the American housing market that the bear may growl loudest. By borrowing against the surging prices of their homes, American consumers have been able to keep on spending. The housing market is already coming off the boil. If prices merely flatten, the economy could slow sharply as consumer spending and construction are squeezed. If house prices fall as a result of higher bond yields, the American economy could even dip into recession. Less spending and more saving is just what America needs to reduce its current-account deficit, but for American households used to years of plenty it will hurt. The confidenceFor the world, it is best that America slows today. Later, imbalances will loom even larger. A few years ago, Japan and the euro-area economies were flat on their backs. Now they are growing "above trend", so the world depends less on America than it once did. The boost to the world economy from China and India will last into the future, even allowing for mishaps. Wise investors should resist the urge to flee, reduce their holdings of risky assets and stare down the bear.1.As it is true that people should not turn their back and run when coming across a bear in woods, they should remember not to divert their money away from the market when possible problems occur.2.Despite a recent drop of about 10% in many stock markets, the world economy is still experiencing gains.3.During the recent economic down turn, South American countries have almost lost all their gains in the previous years of robust development.4.The author does not believe inflation causes the slow-down because it is believed that the interest rates should have risen if it is so.5.According to the passage, recent troubles do not harm the world economy because some statistics show that the world economy is performing well.6.The author thought it was strange to see strong growth with mild inflation because the oil price, which was a reason causing stagflation, tripled in 2003.7.American families are encouraged by cheap money to borrow and spend lavishly.8.The world has so far shrugged off higher oil prices with the help the opening up and integration into the world economy of China, India and.9.For the first time in 15 years, the three big central banks are now all.10.and more saving is just what America needs to reduce its current-account deficit.Part IH Listening ComprehensionSection ADirections: At the end of each conversation, one or more questions will be asked about what was said. Millions of children and adults are exposed over a lifetime to consistent negative and stereotypical portrayals of certain populations in our diverse society. Such portrayals lead to prejudice, which in turn leads to discrimination and unnecessary conflict, adversely affecting the entire nation. Millions of politicians, government officials, parents, teachers and others in positions of authority are consistently portrayed as fools and bumbling idiots in Hollywood movies (the Hollywood antiauthority themes). Millions of Arabs and Arab-Americans, African-Americans, Latinos, Women, Gays/ Lesbians, German-Americans, Italian-Americans, Irish-Americans, Asian-Americans, Native Americans, Southerners and others have been victimized by Hollywood prejudice expressed through the consistent negative and stereotypical portrayals of these populations. Millions of Christians and Muslims are also regularly portrayed in a negative and stereotypical manner in Hollywood films.Thousands of large and small investors foolishly believe that they will be treated fairly by Hollywood deal makers and accounting practices. Hundreds of small independent producers cannot get their movies into decent theaters because they are squeezed out of the marketplace by the releases of the major studio/ distributors, whose movies are not always of better quality, but who use anti-competitive business practices to gain leverage over the exhibitors.Moviegoers of all types who are regularly misled into thinking certain movies are worth seeing and are wrongfully separated from their money by massive and misleading Hollywood advertising. Many members of the many racial, religious, ethnic, cultural groups and regional groups in America cannot make their important cultural stories onto the screen because of the prejudice held by those who control the industry.57.What is the main idea of this passage?[A] Remark on a book. [D] Adequate finance.60.Why are politicians, government officials and parents are consistently portrayed as fools in Hollywood movies?[A] To demonstrate their anti-authority themes. [B] An explanation with specific reference.[C] A point of view with detailed evidence. [D] A proposition with sound reasoning.Passage TwoThe next time you attend a social function or go to a place where people meet and interact, take note of the number of people who have adopted the identical gestures and posture of the person with whom they are talking. This "carbon copying" is a means by which one person tells the other that he is in agreement with his ideas and attitudes. By this method, one is non-verbally saying to the other, "As you can see, I think the same as you, so I will copy your posture and gesture."This unconscious mimicry is quite interesting to observe. Take for example, the two men standing at the hotel bar. They have mirrored each other's gestures and it is reasonable to assume that they are discussing a topic upon which they have the same thoughts and feelings. If one man uncrosses his arms and legs or stands on the other foot, the other will follow, If one puts his hand in his pocket, the other will copy and this mimicry will continue for as long as the two men are in agreement. This copying also occurs among good friends or people at the same status level and it is common to see married couples walk, stand, sit and move in identical ways. People who are strangers, however, studiously avoid holding mutual positions. The significance of carbon copying can be one of the most important non-verbal lessons we can learn, for this is one way that others tell us that they agree with us or like us. It is also a way for us to tell others that we like them, by simply copying their gestures. If an employer wishes to develop an immediate rapport and create a relaxing atmosphere with an employee, he needs to copy the employee's posture to achieve the end. Similarly, an up-and-coming employee may be seen copying his boss* gestures in an attempt to show agreement. Using the knowledge, it is possible to influence a face-to-face encounter by copying the positive gestures and postures of the other person. This has the effect of putting the other person in a receptive and relaxed frame of mind and he can "see" that you understand his point of view.62.What is an appropriate title for this passage?[A] Appropriate Social Behavior. [B] How to Make Gestures.[C] Carbon Copying: Showing Agreement Through Gestures. [D] How to Avoid Carbon Copying.63.What is "carbon copying" according to the passage?[A] To adopt identical gesture of others. [B] To repeat what others have said.[C] To show agreement with others. [D] To mock others.64.Among which group m the following are carbon copying NOT frequently seen?[A] Married couples. [B] Good friends. [C] People not familiar with each other. [D] People at the same* status.65.What should an employer do to create a relaxing atmosphere for employee?[A] Be polite. [B] Copy the gesture of the employee.[C] Be helpful. [D] Avoid copying the employee's gesture.66.What is a way for the prospective employee to show his/her agreement with the boss?[A] Copy the gesture of the boss. [B] Be submissive. [C] Repeat what the boss has said. [D] Be innovative.Part V ClozeDirections: There are 20 blanks in the following passage. On the (77) side, numerous fellow Singaporeans have treated their healthcare professionals like plague. Our nurses, who (78) wear their uniforms in public with pride, had to endure taunts and hostile stares. Some even (79) them consciously. There were other overt discriminatory treatments meted out to medical staffs, which were utterly (80) and inexcusable. Fortunately, these unthinking Singaporeans were the (81) .Nonetheless, their attitudes have brought shame to the nation. At the other extreme, a large number of Singaporeans have already totally abstained (82) social activitieswith the coming of SARS. The repeated use of the term "super-infector” (83) the health authorities and the media to emphasize the transmission of this disease from one patient to numerous others was rather unfortunate and showed the (84) of sensitivity to the feelings of this poor victims and their family, especially when they were (85) agents in such transmission process. First of all, living in a local family provides me the opportunity to communicate with native people and thus to get to be more familiar with their language and culture. After all, when one is going abroad to study, one has to learn its language and culture. And in both aspects, living with a local family outside campus is better. Secondly, living outside campus makes it possible for me to have more privacy than living in dormitories on campus. I can have my own room and my own timetable while most of those have to be compromised in dormitories. Thirdly, living with a family can be more colorful. For example, I can watch TV and cook with them. Dormitories in universities might provide fewer facilities such as those. No doubt living on campus has its advantages. For example, one can have closer access to school library and other important learning resources. That is why I emphasized the distance at the beginning. Although ! choose living outside campus, I do not want to be too far away from campus for the reason mentioned above.Part II Reading Comprehension (Skimming and Scanning)1. A2. B3. C4. A5. A6. C7. The 26 at which cities are growing in the less developed countries is 27 . Between 1920 and 1960 big cities in 28 increased two and a half times in size, but in other parts of the world the growth was eight times their size. The sheer size of growth is bad enough, but there are now also very 29 signs of trouble in the comparison of percentage of people living in towns and percentages of people working in industry, during the 30 century cities grew as a result of the growth of industry. In Europe, the proportion of people living in cities was always smaller than that of the 31 working in factories. Now, however, the 32 is almost always true in the newly industrialized world. The percentage of people living in cities is 33 the percentage working in industry. Without a base of people working in industry, these cities cannot pay for their growth. There is not enough money to build adequate houses for the people that live there, let alone the new arrivals. There has been little 34 to build water supplies or other facilities. We discuss here the major types of media used in advertising. We focus our attention on seven types of advertising: television, newspapers, radio, magazines, out-of-home, Internet, and direct mail.B) Television is an attractive medium for advertising because it delivers massaudiences to advertisers. When you consider that nearly three out of four Americans have seen the game show Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? You can understand the power of television to communicate with a large audience. When advertisers create a brand, for example, they want to impress consumers with the brand and its image. Television provides an ideal vehicle for this type of communication. But television is an expensive medium, and not all advertisers can afford to use it.C) Television's influence on advertising is fourfold. First, narrowcasting meansthat television channels are seen by an increasingly narrow segment of the audience. The Golf Channel, for instance, is watched by people who play golf.Home and Garden Television is seen by those interested in household improvement projects. Thus, audiences are smallerand more homogeneous (具有共同特点的) than they have been in the past. Second, there is an increase in the number of television channels available to viewers, and thus, advertisers. This has also resulted in an increase in the sheer number of advertisements to which audiences are exposed. Third, digital recording devices allow audience members more control over which commercials they watch. Fourth, control over programming is being passed from the networks to local cable operators and satellite programmers.D) After television, the medium attracting the next largest annual ad revenueis newspapers. The New York Times, which reaches a national audience, accounts for $1 billion in ad revenue annually. It has increased its national circulation (发行量) by 40% and is now available for home delivery in 168 cities. Locally, newspapers are the largest advertising medium.E) Newspapers are a less expensive advertising medium than television and providea way for advertisers to communicate a longer, more detailed message to theiraudience than they can through television. Given new production techniques, advertisements can be printed in newspapers in about 48 hours, meaning newspapers are also a quick way of getting the message out. Newspapers are often the most important form of news for a local community, and they develop a high degree of loyalty from local readers.F) Advertising on radio continues to grow. Radio is often used in conjunctionwith outdoor billboards(广告牌) and the Internet to reacheven more customers than television. Advertisers are likely to use radio because it is a less expensive medium than television, which means advertisers can afford to repeat their ads often. Internet companies are also turning to radio advertising.Radio provides a way for advertisers to communicate with audience members at all times of the day. Consumers listen to radio on their way to school or work, at work, on the way home, and in the evening hours.G) Two major changes—satellite and Internet radio—will force radio advertisersto adapt their methods. Both of these radio forms allow listeners to tune in stations that are more distant than the local stations they could receive in the past. As a result, radio will increasingly attract target audiences who live many miles apart.H) Newsweeklies, women’s titles, and business magazines have all seen increasesin advertising because they attract the high-end market. Magazines are popular with advertisers because of the narrow market that they deliver. A broadcastmedium such as network television attracts all types of audience members, but magazine audiences are more homogeneous. If you read Sports Illustrated, for example, you have much in common with the magazine’s other reader s.Advertisers see magazines as an efficient way of reaching target audience members.I) Advertiser using the print media-magazines and newspapers will need to adaptto two main changes. First, the Internet will bring larger audiences to local newspapers. These audiences will be more diverse and geographically dispersed (分散)than in the past.Second, advertisers will have to understand how to use an increasing number of magazines for their target audiences. Although some magazines will maintain national audiences, a large number of magazines will entertain narrower audiences.J) Out-of-home advertising, also called place-based advertising, has become an increasingly effective way of reaching consumers, who are more active than ever before. Many consumers today do not sit at home and watch television. Using billboards, newsstands, and bus shelters for advertising is an effective way of reaching these on-the-go consumers. More consumers travel longer distances to and from work, which also makes out-of-home advertising effective.Technology has changed the nature of the billboard business, making it a more effective medium than in the past. Using digital printing, billboard companiescan print a billboard in 2 hours, compared with 6 days previously. This allows advertisers more variety in the types of messages they create because they can change their messages more quickly.K) As consumers become more comfortable with online shopping, advertisers will seek to reach this market. As consumers get more of their news and information from the Internet, the ability of television and radio to get the word out to consumers will decrease. The challenge to Internet advertisers is to create ads that audience members remember.L) Internet advertising will play a more prominent role in organizations' advertising in the near future. Internet audiences tend to be quite homogeneous, but small. Advertisers will have to adjust their methods to reach these audiences and will have to adapt their persuasive strategies to the online medium as well.M) A final advertising medium is direct mail, which uses mailings to consumers to communicate a client's message. Direct mail includes newsletters, postcards and special promotions. Direct mail is an effective way to build relationships with consumers. For many businesses, direct mail is the most effective form of advertising.46. Television is an attractive advertising medium in that it has largeaudiences.47. The challenge to Internet advertisers is to create ads that are easy to remember.48. Compared with television, newspapers as an advertising medium convey moredetailed messages.49. Magazines are seen by advertisers as an efficient way to reach target audiences.50. Advertising on radio continues to grow because it provides easy access toconsumers.51. Out-of-home advertising has become more effective because consumers travelmore now than ever.52. With the increase in the number of TV channels, the number of TV ads peoplecan see has increased. 53. Newspaper ranks the second among all the media which attract annual adrevenue.54. Direct mail is an effective form of advertising for businesses to developrelationships with consumers.55. Internet advertisers will have to adjust their methods to reach audiencesthat tend to be quite homogeneous, but small.Section CDirections: There are 2 passages in this section. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are fourchoices marked A), B), C) and D). You should decide on the best choiceand mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single linethrough the centre.Passage OneQuestions 56 to 60 are based on the following passage. In Britain there is a National Health Service (NHS) which is paid for by taxesand National Insurance, and in general people do not have to pay for medical treatment. Every person is registered with a doctor in his or her local area, known as a general practitioner (全科医生) or GP. This means that their names are on the GP’s list, and they may make an appointment to see the doctor or may call the doctor out to visit them if they are ill. People sometimes do have to pay part of the cost of drugs that the doctor prescribes. GPs are trained in general medicine but are not specialists in any particular subject. If a patient needs to see a specialist doctor, they must first go to their GP and then the GP will make an appointment for the patient to see a specialist at a hospital or clinic.Although everyone in Britain can have free treatment under the NHS, it is also impossible for him to have treatment doneprivately, for which he has to pay. Some people have private health insurance to help them pay for private treatment. Under the NHS, people who need to go to hospital may have to wait for a long time on a waiting list for their treatment. Anyone who is very ill can call an ambulance (救护车)and get taken to hospital for free urgent medical treatment. Ambulances are a free service in Britain.56. In Britain, the National Health Service refers to____________.A) a local hospitalB) a medicine supplierC) a medical care systemD) an insurance company57. Under the National Health Service, British citizens _________.A) are all registered with a general practitionerB) do not need to buy private health insuranceC) can only go to see a general practitionerD) cannot call in a general practitioner58. People buy private health insurance in order to ___________.A) pay for the ambulance serviceB) receive free urgent treatmentC) see a general practitionerD) have private treatment59. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?A) People in Britain do not have to pay for any kind of medical care.B) People in Britain may wait long for their free medical treatment.C) In Britain you have to pay for ambulance service.D) British private medical insurance is free.60. What is this passage mainly about?A) Private medical care in Britain.B) Roles of general practitioners.C) Taxes and free medical care.D) Health services in Britain.Passage TwoQuestions 61 to 65 are based on the following passage. For an increasing number of students at American universities, Old is suddenly in. The reason is obvious: the graying of America means jobs. Coupled with the aging of the baby-boom (生育高峰) generation, a longer life span means that the nation’s elderly population is bound to expand significantly over the next 50 years. By 2050, 25 percent of all Americans will be older than 65, up from 14 percent in 1995. The change poses profound questions for government and society, of course. But it also creates career opportunities in medicine and health professions, and in law and business as well. “In addition to the doctors, we’re going to need more sociologis ts, biologists, urban planners and specialized lawyers,” says Professor Edward Schneider of the University of Southern California’s (USC) School of Gerontology (老年学).Lawyers can specialize in “elder law,” which covers everything from trusts and estates to nursing-home abuse and age discrimination (歧视). Businessmen see huge opportunities in the elder market because the baby boomers, 74 million strong, are likely to be the wealthiest group of retirees in human history. “Any student who combines an expert kno wledge in gerontology with, say, an MBA or law degree will have a license to print money,” one professor says.Margarite Santos is a 21-year-old senior at USC. She begancollege as a biology major but found she was “really bored with bacteria.” So she took a class in gerontology and discovered that she liked it. She says, “I did volunteer work in retirement homes and it was very satisfying.”61. “…Old is suddenly in” (Line 1, Para. 1) most probably means “______________”.A) America has suddenly become a nation of old peopleB) gerontology has suddenly become popularC) more elderly professors are found on American campusesD) American colleges have realized the need of enrolling older students62. With the aging of America, lawyers can benefit _________________.A) from the adoption of the “elder law”B) from rendering special services to the elderlyC) by enriching their professional knowledgeD) by winning the trust of the elderly to promote their own interests63. Why can businessmen make money in the emerging elder market?A) Retirees are more generous in spending money.B) They can employ more gerontologists.C) The elderly possess an enormous purchasing power.D) There are more elderly people working than before.64. Who can make big money in the new century according to the passage?A) Retirees who are business-minded.B) The volunteer workers in retirement homes.C) College graduates with an MBA or law degree.D) Professionals with a good knowledge of gerontology.65. It can be seen from the passage that the expansion of America’s elderlypopulation ________.A) will provide good job opportunities in many areasB) will impose an unbearable burden on societyC) may lead to nursing home abuse and age discriminationD) will create new fields of study in universitiesPart IV Translation (20 minutes) Directions: For this part, you are allowed 20 minutes to translate a passage from Chinese into English and write your version in the corresponding space on the Answer Sheet.世界钻石委员会(The World Diamond Council)成立于2000年,来抵制消除非洲的非法钻石交易。

Then imagine dust storms sweeping up toxic pesticides and chemical fertilizers from the dry seabed and spewing them across towns and villages.Seem like a scene from a movie about the end of the world? For people living near the Aral Sea in Central Asia, it's all too real. Thirty years ago, government planners diverted the rivers that flow into the sea in order to irrigate(provide water for)farmland. As a result, the sea has shrunk to half its original size, stranding ships on dry land. The seawater has tripled in salt content and become polluted, killing all 24 native species of fish. Similar large scale efforts to redirect water in other parts of the world have also ended in ecological crisis, according to numerous environmental groups. But many countries continue to build massive dams and irrigation systems, even though such projects can create more problems than they fix. Why? People in many parts of the world are desperate for water, and more people will need more water in the next century."Growing populations will worsen problems with water," says Peter H. Gleick, an environmental scientist at the Pacific Institute for studies inDevelopment, Environment, and Security, a research organization in California. He fears that by the year 2025, as many as one third of the world's projected 8.3 billion people will suffer from water shortages. Where Water GoesOnly 2.5 percent of all water on Earth is freshwater, water suitable for drinking and growing food, says Sandra Postel, director of the Global Water Policy Project in Amherst, Mass. Two thirds of this freshwater is locked in glaciers and ice caps. In fact, only a tiny percentage of freshwater is part of the water cycle, in which water evaporates and rises into the atmosphere, then condenses and falls back to Earth as precipitation(rain or snow). Some precipitation runs off land to lakes and oceans, and some becomes groundwater, water that seeps into the earth. Much of this renewable freshwater ends up in remote places like the Amazon river basin in Brazil, where few people live. In fact, the world's population has access to only 12,500 cubic kilometers of freshwater-about the amount of water in Lake Superior. And people use half of this amount already. "If water demand continues to climb rapidly," says Postel, "there will be severe shortages and damage to the aquatic environment."Close to HomeWater woes may seem remote to people living in rich countries like the United States. But Americans could face serious water shortages, too especially in areas that rely on groundwater. Groundwater accumulates in aquifers, layers of sand and gravel that lie between soil and bedrock. (For every liter of surface water, more than 90 liters are hidden underground).Although the United States has large aquifers, farmers, ranchers, and cities are tapping many of them for water faster than nature can replenish it. In northwest Texas, for example, over pumping has shrunk groundwater supplies by 25 percent, according to Postel.Americans may face even more urgent problems from pollution. Drinking water in the United States is generally safe and meets high standards. Nevertheless, one in five Americans every day unknowingly drinks tap water contaminated with bacteria and chemical wastes, according to the Environmental Protection Agency. In Milwaukee, 400,000 people fell ill in 1993 after drinking tap water tainted with cryptosporidium, a microbe that causes fever, diarrhea and vomiting. The SourceWhere so contaminants come from? In developing countries, people dump raw sewage into the same streams and rivers from which they draw water for drinking and cooking; about 250 million people a year get sick from water borne diseases. In developed countries, manufacturers use 100,000 chemical compounds to make a wide range of products. Toxic chemicals pollute water when released untreated into rivers and lakes. (Certain compounds, such as polychlorinated biphenyls, or PCBs, have been banned in the United States.)But almost everyone contributes to water pollution. People often pour household cleaners, car antifreeze, and paint thinners down the drain; All of these contain hazardous chemicals. Scientists studying water in the San Francisco Bay reported in 1996 that 70 percent of the pollutants could be traced to household waste.Farmers have been criticized for overusing herbicides and pesticides, chemicals that kill weeds and insects but insects but that pollutes water as well. Farmers also use nitrates, nitrogen rich fertilizer that helps plants grow but that can wreak havoc on the environment. Nitrates are swept away by surface runoff to lakes and seas. Too many nitrates "over enrich" these bodies of water, encouraging the buildup of algae, or microscopic plants that live on the surface of the water. Algae deprive the water of oxygen that fish need to survive, at times choking off life in an entire body of water. What's the Solution?Water expert Gleick advocates conservation and local solutions to water related problems; governments, for instance, would be better off building small scale dams rather than huge and disruptive projects like the one that ruined the Aral Sea."More than 1 billion people worldwide don't have access to basic clean drinking water," says Gleick. "There has to be a strong push on the part of everyone governments and ordinary people-to make sure we have a resource so fundamental to life."1. That the huge water projects have diverted the rivers causes the Aral Sea to shrink.2. The construction of massive dams and irrigation projects does more good than harm.3. The chief causes of water shortage are population growth and water pollution.4. The problems Americans face concerning water are ground water shrinkage and tap water pollution.5. According to the passage all water pollutants come from household waste.6. The people living in the United States will not be faced with water shortages.7. Now, however, all children continue in (41) schools, and the eleven-plus determines which courses of study the child will follow. At the age of fifteen or sixteen, the students are (42)for the Ordinary (43)of the General Certificate of Education. (44). Once students have passed this exam, they are allowed to specialize, so that two-thirds or more of their courses will be in physics, chemistry, classical languages, or whatever they wish to study at greater length. (45). Even at the universities, studentsstudy only in their concentrated area, and very few students ever venture out-side that subject again. You may not use any of the words in the bank more than once.Questions 47 to 56 are based on the following passage.Shopping habits in the United States have changed greatly in the last quarter of the 20th century. 47 in the 1900s most American towns and cities had a Main Street. Main Street was always the heart of a town. This street was lined on the both sides with many 48 businesses. Here, shoppers walked into stores to look at all sorts of merchandise: clothing, furniture, hardware, groceries. In addition, some shops offered 49 . There shops included drugstores, restaurants, shoe repair stores, and barber or hairdressing shops. But in the 1950s, a change began to 50 place. Too many automobiles had crowded into Main Street while too few parking places were 51 to shoppers. Because the streets were crowded, merchants began to look with interest at the open spaces outside the city limits. Open space is what their car driving customers needed. And open space is what they got when the first shopping centre was built. Shopping centers, or rather malls, 52 as a collection of small new stores away from crowded city centers. 53 by hundreds of free parking space, customers were drawn away from 54 areas to outlying malls. And the growing 55 of shopping centers led in turn to the building of bigger and better stocked stores. By the late 1970s, many shopping malls had almost developed into small cities themselves. In addition to providing the 56 of the stop shopping, malls were transformed into landscaped parks, with benches, fountains, and outdoor entertainment.[A]designed [F]convenience [K]cosmetics[B]take [G]services [L]started[C]Early [H]fame [M]downtown[D]Attracted [I]various [N]available[E] though [J] popularity [O]cheapnessSection BDirections: There are 2 passages in this section. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked [A], [B], [C] and [D].You should decide on the bestchoice and mark the corresponding letter on Answer Sheet 2 with a single line through the centre.Passage OneQuestions 57 to 61 are based on the following passage.Culture is one of the most challenging elements of the international marketplace. This system of learned behavior patterns characteristic of the members of a given society is constantly shaped by a set of dynamic variables: language, religion, values and attitudes, manners and customs, aesthetics, technology, education, and social institutions. To cope with this system, an international manager needs both factual and interpretive knowledge of culture. To some extent, the factual knowledge can be learned; its interpretation comes only through experience. The most complicated problems in dealing with the cultural environment stem from the fact that one cannot learn culture one has to live it. Two schools of thought exist in the business world on how to deal with cultural diversity. One is that business is business the world around, following the model of Pepsi and McDonald's. In some cases, globalization is a fact of life; however, cultural differences are still far from converging. The other school proposes that companies must tailor business approaches to individual cultures. Setting up policies and procedures in each country has been compared to an organ transplant; the critical question centers around acceptance or rejection. The major challenge to the international manager is to make sure that rejection is not a result of cultural myopia or even blindness.Fortune examined the international performance of a dozen large companies that earn 20 percent or more of their revenue overseas. The internationally successful companies all share an important quality: patience. They have not rushed into situations but rather built their operations carefully by following the most basic business principles. These principles are to know your adversary, know your audience, and know your customer.57. According to the passage, which of the following is true?[A]All international managers can learn culture.[B]Business diversity is not necessary.[C]Views differ on how to treat culture in business world.[D]Most people do not know foreign culture well.58. According to the author, the model of Pepsi.[A]is in line with the theories of the school advocating the business is business the world around.[B]is different from the model of McDonald's[C]shows the reverse of globalization[D]has converged cultural differences59. The two schools of thought.[A]both propose that companies should tailor business approaches to individual cultures[B]both advocate that different policies be set up in different countries [C]admit the existence of cultural diversity in business world[D]Both A and B60. This article is supposed to be most useful for those.[A]who are interested in researching the topic of cultural diversity [B]who have connections to more than one type of culture[C]who want to travel abroad[D]who want to run business on International Scale61. According to Fortune, successful international companies.[A]earn 20 percent or more of their revenue overseas[B]all have the quality of patience[C]will follow the overseas local cultures[D]adopt the policy of internationalizationPassage TwoQuestions 62 to 66 are based on the following passage. There are people in Italy who can't stand soccer. Not all Canadians love hockey. A similar situation exists in America, where there are those individuals you may be one of them who yawn or even frown when somebody mentions baseball. Baseball to them means boring hours watching grown men in funny tight outfits standing around in a field staring away while very little of anything happens. They tell you it's a game better suited to the 19th century, slow, quiet, and gentlemanly. These are the same people you may be one of them who love football because there's the sport that glorifies "the hit".By contrast, baseball seems abstract, cool, silent, still. On TV the game is fractured into a dozen perspectives, replays, close ups. The geometry of the game, however, is essential to understanding it. You will contemplate the game from one point as a painter does his subject; you may, of course, project yourself into the game. It is in this projection that the game affords so much space and time for involvement. The TV won't do it for you.Take, for example, the third baseman. You sit behind the third base dugout and you watch him watching home plate. His legs are apart, knees flexed. His arms hang loose. He does a lot of this. The skeptic still cannot think of any other sports so still, so passive. But watch what happens every time the pitcher throws: the third baseman goes up on his toes, flexes his arms or bring the glove to a point in front of him, takes a step right or left, backward or forward, perhaps he glances across the field to check his first baseman'sposition. Suppose the pitch is a ball. "Nothing happened," you say. "I could have had my eyes closed."The skeptic and the innocent must play the game. And this involvement in the stands is no more intellectual than listening to music is. Watch the third baseman. Smooth the dirt in front of you with one foot; smooth the pocket in your glove; watch the eyes of the batter, the speed of the bat, the sound of horsehide on wood. 710 分四级模拟题第五套答案Part I WritingShould Women Have Equal Job Opportunities with Men As can be seen in the table, the percentage of people who agree with this point exceeds that of people who disagree, especially in China (57% agree and 8% disagree); however, in China and the U.S.A, particularly in Japan(25% of people disagree, which occupies the most in three countries), there are still some people against women’s equal job opportunities with men. Possible reasons for the facts as follows. On the one hand, the women’s liberation movement across the world has raised women’s social positions a lot. In China concerned laws have been passed to protect women’s rights in many areas. In the U.S.A, it is illegal to discriminate again st women in employment. On the other hand, women are still thought interior to men in many aspects as a result of traditional ideas as well as physiological differences between men and women and this is rather serious in Japan. In my opinion that women’s importance in society should be admitted by more. The society should provide them with more job opportunities rather than look down upon them.Part II Reading Comprehension (Skimming and Scanning)1. Y2. N3.Y4. NG5.N6. N7. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A), B), C) and D). You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the center.Passage OneQuestions 21 to 25 are based on the following passage.Design of all the new tools and implements is based on careful experiments with electronic instruments. First, a human “guinea pig” is tested using a regular tool. Measurements are taken of the amount of work done, and the buildup of heat in the body. Twisted joints and stretched muscles can not perform as well, it has been found, as joints and muscles in their normal positions. The same person is then tested again, using a tool designed according to the suggestions made by Dr. Tichauer. All these tests have shown the great improvement of the new designs over the old.One of the electronic instruments used by Dr. Tichauer, the myograph (肌动记器), makes visible through electrical signals the work done by human muscle.Another machine measures any dangerous features of tools, thus proving information upon which to base a new design. One conclusion of tests made with this machine is that a tripod stepladder is more stable and safer to use than one with four legs. This work has attracted the attention of efficiency experts and time-and-motion-study engineer, but its value goes far beyond that. Dr. Tichauer’s first thought is for the health of the tool user. With the repeated use of the same tool all day long on production lines and in other jobs, even light manual work can put a heavy stress on one small area of the body. In time, such stress can cause a disabling disease. Furthermore, muscle fatigue is a serious safety hazard.Efficiency is the by-product of comfort, Dr. Tichauer believes, and his new designs for traditional tools have proved his point.21. What are involved in the design of a new tool according to the passageA) Electronic instruments and a regular tool.B) A human “guinea pig” and a regular tool.C) Electronic instruments and a human “guinea pig”.D) Electronic instruments, a human “guinea pig” and a regular tool.22. From the passage we know that joints and muscles perform best when __________________.A) they are twisted and stretchedB) they are in their normal positionsC) they are tested with a human “guinea pig”D) they are tested with electronic instruments23. A “myograph” (Para. 2, Line 1) is an electronic instrument that ________________.A) is able to design new toolsB) measures the amount of energy usedC) enable people to see the muscular movementsD) visualizes electrical signals24. It can be inferred from the passage that ________________.A) a stepladder used to have four legs.B) it is dangerous to use toolsC) a tripod is safer in a tool designD) workers are safer on production lines25. Dr. Tichauer started his experiments initially to _________________.A) improve efficiencyB) increase productionC) reduce work loadD) improve comfortQuestions 26 to 30 are based on the following passage:More and more, the operations of our businesses, governments, and financial institutions are controlled by information that exists only inside computer memories. Anyone clever enough to modify this information for his own purposes can reap big reward. Even worse, a number of people who have done this and been caught at it have managed to get away without punishment. It’s easy for computer crimes to go undetected if no one checks up on what the computer is doing. But even if the crime is detected, the criminal may walk away not only unpunished but with a glowing recommendation from his former employers.Of course, we have no statistics on crimes that go undetected. But it’s disturbing to note how many of the crimes we do know about were detected by accident, not by systematic inspections or other security procedures. The computer criminals who have been caught may have been the victims of uncommonly bad luck.Unlike other lawbreakers, who must leave the country, commit suicide, or go to jail, computer criminals sometimes escape punishment, demanding not only that they not be charged but that they be given good recommendations and perhaps other benefits. All too often, their demands have been met.Why Because company executives are afraid of the bad publicity that would result if the public found out that their computer had been misused. They hesitate at the thought of a criminal boasting in open court of how he juggled (诈骗) the most confidential (保密)records right under the noses of the company’s executives, accountants, and security staff. And so another computer criminal departs with just the recommendations he needs to continue his crimes elsewhere.26. It can be concluded from the passage that _______________.A) it is still impossible to detect computer crimes todayB) people commit computer crimes at the request of their companyC) computer criminals escape punishment because they can’t be detectedD) computer crimes are the most serious problem in the operation of financial institutions27. It is implied in the third paragraph that _________________.A) most computer criminals who are caught blame their bad luckB) the rapid increase of computer crimes is a troublesome problemC) most computer criminals are smart enough to cover up their crimesD) many more computer crimes go undetected that are discovered28. Which of the following statements is mentioned in the passageA) A strict law against computer crimes must be enforcedB) Companies usually hesitate to uncover computer crimes to protect their reputationC) Companies will guard against computer crimes to protect their reputationD) Companies need to impose restrictions on confidential information29. What may happen to computer criminals once they are caughtA) With a bad reputation they can hardly find another job.B) They may walk away and easily find another job.C) They will be denied access to confidential recordsD) They must leave the country to go to jail.30. The passage is mainly about _________________.A) why computer criminals are often able to escape punishmentB) why computer crimes are difficult to detect by systematic inspectionsC) how computer criminals mange to get good recommendations from their former employersD) why computer crimes can’t be eliminatedQuestions 31 to 35 are based on the following passage. In a family where the roles of men and women are not sharply separated and where many household tasks are shared to a greater or lesser extent, notions of male superiority are hard to maintain. The pattern of sharing in tasks and indecision makes for equality and this in turn leads to further sharing. In such a home, the growing boy and girl learn to accept equality more easily than did their parents and to prepare more fully for participation in a world characterized by cooperation rather than by the “battle of the sexes”.If the process goes too far and man’s role is regarded as less important – and that has happened in some cases – we are as badly off as before, only in reverse. It is time to reassess the role of the man in the American family. We are getting a little tired of “Momism”– but we don’t want to exchange it for a “neo-Popism”. What we need, rather, is the recognition that bringing up children involves a partnership of equals. There are signs that psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, and specialists on the family are becoming more aware of the part men play and that they have decided that women should not receive all the credit – nor theblame. We have almost given up saying that a woman’s place is in the home. We are beginning, however, to analyse man’s place in the home and to insist that he does have a place in it. Nor is that place irrelevant to the healthy development of the child. The family is a co-operative enterprise for which it is difficult to lay down rules, because each family needs to work out its own ways for solving its own problems.Excessive authoritarianism(命令主义)has unhappy consequences, whether it wears skirts or trousers, and the ideal of equal rights and equal responsibilities is pertinent (相关的,切题的) not only to a healthy democracy, but also to a healthy family.31. The ideal of equal rights and equal responsibilities is _________________.A) fundamental to a sound democracyB) not pertinent to healthy family lifeC) responsible for MomismD) what we have almost given up32. The danger in the sharing of household tasks by the mother and the father is that ___________.A) the role of the father may become an inferior one’B) the role of the mother may become an inferior oneC) C) the children will grow up believing that life is a battle of sexesD) sharing leads to constant arguing33. The author states that bringing up children ________________.A) is mainly the mother’s jobB) belongs among the duties of the fatherC) is the job of schools and churchesD) involves a partnership of equals34. According to the author, the father’s role in the home is ____________________.A) minor because he is an ineffectual parentB) irrelevant to the healthy development of the childC) pertinent to the healthy development of the childD) identical to the role of the child’s mother35. With which of the following statements would the author be most likely to agreeA) A healthy, co-operative family is a basic ingredient of a healthy society.B) Men are basically opposed to sharing household chores.C) Division of household responsibilities is workable only in theory.D) A woman’s place in the home – now as always.Questions 36 to 40 are based on the following passage:Teaching children to read well from the start is the most important task of elementary schools. But relying on educators to approach this task correctly can be a great mistake. Many schools continue to employ instructional methods that have been proven ineffective. The staying power of the “look-say” or “whole-word” method of teaching beginning reading is perhaps the most flagrant example of this failure to instruct effectively. The whole-word approach to reading stresses the meaning of words over the meaning of letters, thinking over decoding, developing a sight vocabulary of familiar words over developing the ability to unlock the pronunciation of unfamiliar words. It fits in with the self-directed, “learning how to learn” activities recommended by advocates (倡导者)of “open” classrooms and with the concept that children have to be developmentally ready to begin reading. Before 1963, no major publisher put out anything but these “Run-Spot-Run” readers. However, in 1955, Rudolf Flesch touched off what has been called “the great debate” in beginning reading. In his best-seller Why Johnny Can’t Read, Flesch indicted(控诉)the nation’s public schools for miseducating students by using the look-say method. He said – and more scholarly studies by Jeane Chall and Rovert Dykstra later confirmed – that another approach to beginning reading, founded on phonics(语音学), is far superior.Systematic phonics first teachers children to associate letters and letter combinations with sounds; it then teaches them how to blend these sounds together to make words. Rather than building up a relatively limited vocabulary of memorized words, it imparts a code by which the pronunciations of the vast majority of the most common words in the English language can be learned. Phonics does not devalue the importance of thinking about the meaning of words and sentences; it simply recognizes that decoding is the logical and necessary first step.36. The author feels that counting on educators to teach reading correctly is _____________.A) only logical and natural B) the expected positionC) probably a mistake D) merely effective instruction37. The author indicts the look-say reading approach because _________________.A) it overlooks decoding B) Rudolf Flesch agrees with himC) he says it is boring D) many schools continue to use this method38. One major difference between the look-say method of learning reading and the phonics method is _______________.A) look-say is simpler B) Phonics takes longer to learnC) look-say is easier to teach D) phonics gives readers access to far more words39. The phrase “touch-off” (Para 3, Line 1) most probably means _____________.A) talk about shortly B) start or causeC) compare with D) oppose40. According to the author, which of the following statements is trueA) Phonics approach regards whole-word method as unimportant.B) The whole-word approach emphasizes decoding.C) In phonics approach, it is necessary and logical to employ decoding.D) Phonics is superior because it stresses the meaning of words thus the vast majority of most common words can be learned.Part Three Vocabulary and StructureDirections: There are 30 incomplete sentences in this part.
