浙江大学英语三级历年真题试卷汇编8(题后含答案及解析)

浙江大学英语三级历年真题试卷汇编8(题后含答案及解析)题型有: 4. Reading Comprehension 7. Integrated Testing 8. WritingPart ⅣReading ComprehensionSection ADirections: There are 3 passages in this part. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A), B), C) and D). You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the center.Passage OneIt is customary for adults to forget how hard and dull and long school is. The learning by memory of all the basic things one must know is a most incredible and unending effort. School is not easy and it is not for the most part very much fun, but then, if you are very lucky, you may find a real teacher. Three teachers in a lifetime are the very best of my luck. My first was a science and math teacher in high school, my second, a professor of creative writing at Stanford, and my third was my friend and partner, ED Rickets. I have to believe that a great teacher is a great artist and that there are as few as there are any other great artists. It might even be the greatest of the arts since the medium is the human mind and spirit. My three teachers had these things in common: They all loved what they were doing: they did not tell, but stimulated a burning desire to know. Under their influence, the horizons sprang wide and fear went away and the unknown became knowable. I shall speak only of my first teacher because in addition to the other things, she brought discovery. She aroused us to shouting, bookwaving discussions. She had the noisiest class in school and she did not even seem to know it. We could never stick to the subject. Our speculation(思绪)ranged the world. She breathed curiosity into us so that we brought in facts or truths shielded in our hands like captured fireflies(萤火虫). She was fired, and perhaps rightly so, for failing to teach fundamentals. Such things must be learned. But she left a passion(激情)in us for the pure knowable world and she inflamed me with a curiosity which has never left. I have had many teachers who told me soon-forgotten facts but only three who created in me a new attitude and a new hunger. What deathless power lies in the hands of such a person?1.In the writer’s opinion, school life is usually______.A.excitingB.interestingC.tiresomeD.challenging正确答案:C2.We can infer from Paragraph 2 that______.A.it is easy to find great artists as well as great teachersB.there are few great teachers but many great artistsC.the greatest artists are not easy to find: nor are the greatest teachersD.being a great teacher is a great art to learn because teachers spread knowledge 正确答案:C3.In the writer’s opinion, a good teacher should______.A.teach students the fundamental thingsB.stick to one subject and be strict with studentsC.teach students the knowledge ranging the worldD.arouse students’ curiosity and desire to know the world正确答案:D4.The writer’s first teacher was dismissed mainly because______.A.her class was the noisiest in schoolB.she did not teach basic knowledge in classC.she let students shout and wave books in classD.she did not know how to teach basic knowledge effectively正确答案:B5.What is the best title of this article?A.The Teachers in My LifeB.How to Become a TeacherC.What to Teach at SchoolD.What Makes a Good Teacher正确答案:DPassage TwoAccording to psychologists(心理学家), an emotion is aroused when a man or animal views something as either bad or good. When a person feels like running away from something he thinks will hurt him, we call this emotion fear. If the person wants to remove the danger by attacking it, we call the emotion anger. The emotions of joy and love are aroused when we think something can help us. An emotion does not have to be created by something in the outside world. It can be created by a person’s thoughts. Everyone has emotions. Many psychologists believe that infants are born without emotions. They believe children learn emotions just as they learn to read and write. A growing child not only learns his emotions but learns howto act in certain situations because of an emotion. Psychologists think that there are two types of emotion: positive and negative. Positive emotions include love, liking, joy, delight, and hope. They are aroused by something that appeals to a person. Negative emotions make a person unhappy or dissatisfied. They include anger, fear, despair, sadness, and disgust. In growing up, a person learns to cope with the negative emotions in order to be happy. Emotions may be weak or strong. Some strong emotions are so unpleasant that a person will try every means to escape from them. In order to feel happy, the person may choose unusual ways to avoid the emotion. Strong emotions can make it hard to think and to solve problems. They may prevent a person from learning or paying attention to what he is doing. For example, a student taking an examination may be so worried about failing that he cannot think properly. The worry drains valuable mental energy he needs for the examination.6.We learn from the passage that an emotion is created by something______.A.one feels in dangerB.one faces in the outside worldC.one thinks bad or goodD.one tries to escape from real life正确答案:C7.Which of the following statements is NOT true according to the passage?A.Babies are born with emotions.B.Emotions fall into two types in general.C.Children learn emotions as they grow up.D.People can cope with the negative emotions in life.正确答案:A8.The author’s purpose in writing this passage is to______.A.explain why people have emotionsB.define and classify people’s emotionsC.show how people avoid the negative emotionsD.explain what people should do about emotions正确答案:B9.When a student is too worried about failing in the exam,______.A.he will simply give upB.he will not be able to think properlyC.he will need extra mental energyD.he will try very hard to solve the problems正确答案:B10.The word “drains”(Para .5)most probably means______.A.tiesB.stopsC.flowsD.weakens正确答案:DPassage ThreeMany a young person tells me he wants to be a writer. I always encourage such people, but I also explain that there’s a big difference between “being a writer”and writing. In most cases these individuals are dreaming of wealth and fame, not the long hour alone at a typewriter. “You’ve got to want to write,” I say to them . “not want to be a writer”. The reality is that writing is a lonely, private and poorly-paid affair. For every writer kissed by fortune there are thousands more whose longing is never rewarded. When I left a 20-year career in the US Coast Guard to become a ereelance(自由职业)writer, I had no prospects at all. What I did have was a friend who found me a room in a New York apartment building. It didn’t even matter that it was cold and had no bathroom. I immediately bought a used manual typewriter and felt like a genuine writer. After a year or so, however, I still hadn’t gotten a break and began to doubt myself. It was so hard to sell a story that I barely made enough to eat. But I knew I wanted to write, I had dreamed about it for years. I wasn’t going to be one of those people who die wondering: What if? I would keep putting my dream to the test even though it meant living with uncertainty and fear of failure. This is the shadowland of hope, and anyone with a dream must learn to live there.11.The word “prospects”(Para .2)is closest in meaning to______.A.rich resourcesB.reasonable hopesC.strong desiresD.enormous advantages正确答案:B12.The writer mentions his 20-year career in the US Coast Guard in order to show______.A.his regret at leaving the armyB.his determination to realize his dreamC.his disappointment with the army lifeD.his excitement with the new life in the big city正确答案:B13.The writer would use all the following words to describe his life as a writer, except______.A.failureB.lonelinessC.wealthD.hard work正确答案:C14.What is the main idea of the passage?A.One may become a writer if he loves writing.B.One may become a writer if he keeps on writing.C.One will surely become a writer if he works hard.D.One will surely become a writer if he learns to write.正确答案:B15.Who do you think most likely wrote this passage?A.A poor dreamer.B.A successful writer.C.A journal editor.D.A literature professor.正确答案:BSection BDirections: In this section, there is a passage with ten blanks. Read the passage carefully. Then answer the questions or complete the statements with no more than 10 words. Please write your answers on Answer Sheet 2.The advantages of some form of international language in the modern world are obvious. Thanks to modern methods of transport, we can travel everywhere more easily and more quickly than ever before, but the language problem still remains. Without a common language, misunderstandings arise and there can be no real communication between people of different nationalities. There are two possible solutions to this problem: either we choose one of the existing major languages of the world, or we make up an artificial one. But neither solution is simple because no existing major language will be acceptable to everyone and because an artificial language, such as Esperanto(世界语), has no literature and would be thought dull by many learners. It is often said that English is quickly becoming a world language. It is certainly the most widely used language in the world, and second only to Chinese in its number of native speakers, but there are certain dangers in choosing English as an international language. First of all, owing to political reasons and national pride, English is not acceptable to everyone as a world language. Many dislike its influence: they see it as a form of interference, perhaps even domination. English words enter their languages and this too causes offence. Although English is being taught in more and more schools abroad, the process is not always popular. Not every nation is prepared to accept the dominant position of a foreign language in their educational system. Another danger is that differences in standard English arise from its use throughout the world. It could break up, with languages developing from dialects(方言)of English. Already Indian teachers and Nigerian students have been unable to understand each other’s English. Questions:46.Why can we travel more easily nowadays?正确答案:Because of modern methods of transport.47.Why is there no real communication between people of different nationalities? .正确答案:Because of misunderstandings without a common language.48.Which language is spoken by more people than any other language?正确答案:Chinese.49.What do many people dislike about English?正确答案:They dislike its influence.50.Why can’t Indian teachers and Nigerian students understand each other’s English?正确答案:Because differences in standard English arise from its use.Part ⅣWriting51.Some students prefer to start their own business after graduation. Others prefer to work for an employer. Which do you prefer? Give reasons to support your answer. Writer a short essay of about 100 words on this topic. Write your essay on Answer Sheet 2.正确答案:Nowadays there are many college students who choose to start their own business instead of working for an employer after graduation. This phenomenon has aroused great concern from the whole society. As for me, I prefer to work for an employer. The reasons are as follows: First of all, it is very difficult to run a business after graduation, because it needs firm determination, clear mind and the ability to endure hardship. Second, lots of college graduates have spent too much time studying at school without referring to the requirement of running a business. Therefore, college students should look before leap and make full preparation before starting their own business.。

The only trouble was that the place was very difficult to get to. He returned from his first visit to the place in late autumn, and could not get back until the snows melted in the following spring. Then he went to the pilot of a small plane, who earned his living by carrying hunters over parts of the country where there were no roads and no railways, and asked him to take him back to his favorite piece of forest. The pilot did not know the place, so the hunter showed it to him on the map. “But there is nowhere to land there, man!” said the pilot. “I have flown over that part of the country on my way to other places, and I know that we can’t land anywhere between this river and these mountains.”“I thought you were a wonderful pilot,” said the hunter. “Some of my friends said you could land a plane on a postage stamp.”“That’s right,”answered the pilot. “I can land a plane where nobody else can. But I tell you there is nowhere to land in the place you are talking about.”“And what if I tell you that another pilot did land me there last spring?” said the hunter. “Is that true?” asked the pilot. “Yes, it is. I swear it. “Well, this pilot could not let himself be beaten by another, so he agreed to take the hunter. When they reached the place, the hunter pointed out a small spot without trees in the middle of the forest, with a steep rise at one end. The pilot thought that there was not enough room to land there, but the hunter said that the other pilot had done so the year before, so down went the plane. When it came to the rise, it turned right over onto its back. As the hunter climbed out, he smiled happily and said, “Yes, that is exactly how the other pilot managed it last time.”1.What does the passage say about the piece of forest the hunter liked?A.He had been there twice.B.He saw a lot of animals he liked there.C.He could not wait to go back there.D.He paid his first visit there in late summer.正确答案:C2.How and when could that piece of forest be reached?A.By boat in spring.B.On foot all year round.C.By train in summer.D.On foot except in winter.正确答案:D3.Which of the following is FALSE about the pilot of a small plane?A.He earned a lot from his job.B.He had a strong sense of competition.C.He was skillful and experienced.D.He had never landed on that piece of forest.正确答案:A4.Why did the pilot eventually agree to take the hunter to his favorite place?A.Because the hunter challenged him by telling him a lie.B.Because the pilot was convinced he could land the hunter.C.Because the pilot was encouraged to have a big adventure.D.Because the hunter promised to pay the pilot a huge amount.正确答案:A5.What happened at the end of the story?A.The hunter managed to save the pilot.B.The pilot landed the plane in a wrong place.C.The pilot carried the hunter to the forest safely.D.The hunter doubtfully showed the pilot the way to land.正确答案:BPassage TwoThe legal limit for driving after drinking is 80 milligrams of alcohol(酒精)in 100 milliliters of blood when tested. But there is no sure way of telling how much you can drink before you reach this limit. It varies with each person depending on your weight, your sex, if you’ve eaten and what sort of drinks you’ve had. Some people might reach their limit after only about three standard drinks. In fact, your driving ability can be affected by just one or two drinks. Even if you’re below the legal limit, you could still be taken to court if a police officer thinks your driving has been affected by alcohol. It takes about one hour for the body to get rid of the alcohol in one standard drink. So, if you have a heavy drinking session in the evening, you might find that your driving ability is still affected the next morning, or you could even find that you’re still over the legal limit. In a test with professional drivers, the more alcoholic drinks they had had, the more certain they were that they could drive a test course through a set of moveable posts... and the less able they were to do it! That describes the way many of us live today. We are doing more, but enjoying it less. And when that doesn’t work, we make the problem worse. In our wild search for satisfaction, we try stuffing still more into our days, never realizing that we are taking the wrong approach. The truth is simple: so simple it is hard to believe. Satisfaction lies with less, not with more. Yet, we pursue the illusion that this thing, or that activity, will somehow provide the satisfaction we so desperately seek. Arthur Lindman, in his hard-hitting(直言不讳的)book, The Harried Leisure Class, described the futility(徒劳)of pursuing more. His research focused on what people did with their leisure time. He found that as income rose, people bought more things to occupy their leisure time. But, the more things they bought, the less they valued any one of them. Carried to an extreme, he predicted massive boredom in the midst of tremendous variety. That was more than twenty years ago, and his prediction seems more accurate every year. Lindman, of course, is not the first to discover this. The writer of Ecclesiastes(传道书)expressed the same thought thousands of years ago. It is better, he wrote, to have less, but enjoy it more. If you would like to enjoy life more, I challenge you to experiment with me. How could you simplify your life? What could you drop? What could you do without? What could you stop pursuing? What few things could you concentrate on? The more I learn, the more I realize that fullness of life does not depend on things. The more I give up, the more I seem to gain. But words will never convince you. You must try it for yourself.11.Why do people become increasingly busy according to the passage?A.Because they want to make more money.B.Because they try to get more things done.C.Because they want to make their life better.D.Because they want to satisfy their daily needs.正确答案:D12.What is Lindman’s opinion on people’s hard work?A.It makes their life less enjoyable.B.It makes their life nice and happy.C.It enables them to buy more things.D.It enables them to have more leisure time.正确答案:A13.Which of the following is NOT TRUE about the truth of life according to the passage?A.It sounds too simple to believe.B.Lindman was the first to discover the truth.C.It becomes increasingly precise over the years.D.The more people have, the more bored they get.正确答案:B14.What does the writer suggest people do for better life?A.Reflect on the nature of life.B.Accept the daily challenges boldly.C.Try to make life more challenging.D.Follow his opinion in their daily life.正确答案:D15.Which of the following can be the best title for the passage?A.Work to LiveB.Simplify Your LifeC.The More, the BetterD.Accept My Challenge正确答案:BSection BDirections: In this section, there is a passage with ten blanks. Read the passage carefully. Then answer the questions or complete the statements with no more than 10 words. Please write your answers on Answer Sheet 2.Twenty years ago, kids in school had never even heard of the internet. Now, I’ll bet you can’t find a single person in your school who hasn’t at least heard of it. In fact, many of us use it on a regular basis and even have access to it from our homes! The “net” in internet really stands for network. A network is two or more computers connected together so that information can be shared, or sent from one computer to another. The internet is a vast resource for all types of information. You may enjoy using it to do research for a school project, downloading your favorite songs or communicating with friends and family. Information is accessed through web pages that companies, organizations and individuals create and post. It’s kind of like a giant bulletin(告示)board that the whole world uses! But since anyone can put anything on the internet, you also have to be careful and use your best judgment and a little common sense. Just because you read something on a piece of paper someone sticks on a bulletin board doesn’t mean it’s good information, or even correct, for that matter. So you have to be sure that whoever posted the information knows what they’re talking about, especially if you’re doing research! But What if you’re just e-mailing people? You still have to be very careful. If you’ve never met the person that you’re communicating with online, you could be on dangerous ground! You should never give out any personal information to someone you don’t know, not even your name! And just like you can’t believe the information on every website out there, you can’t rely on what strangers you “meet” on the internet tell you either. Just like you could make up things about yourself to tell someone, someone else could do thesame to you! Questions:46.What does the “net” in internet mean?正确答案:It means network.47.What can people get from the internet?正确答案:A vast resource for al1 types of information.48.The internet is a very useful tool for______between people.正确答案:communication49.When people talk online with strangers, they should not give out______.正确答案:personal information50.What does the second paragraph mainly tell internet users about?正确答案:The information online is not all reliable.Part ⅣWriting51.For this part, you are allowed 30 minutes to write a composition on the topic How to Get Along With a Roommate’! You should write at least 100 words, and base your composition on the outline below:1)University students’living conditions:2)The importance of getting along with your roommates:3)Your viewpoints on how to get along with your roommates.正确答案:Nowadays, many college students are faced with problems concerning about living conditions. One of the major problems is that they do not know how to get along with their roommates. Having a good relationship with our roommates allows us to live in a more relaxed and comfortable atmosphere. It can even help improve our learning efficiency. In contrast, if we often have conflicts with our roommates, we will feel awful. In my opinion, there are two ways to get along with our roommates. First, we should be ready to help our roommates if they are in trouble. Second, in order to make our dormitory a better place to live in, we should clean it regularly and make it tidy.。

You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the center.Passage OneAn American researcher has developed a simple device to help stop snoring(打鼾). The device restricts the movements of the tissue(器官组织)that causes the bad sound. Snoring is a common problem. It may prevent a person from getting enough sleep. It may also prevent enough oxygen from reaching the heart and lungs during the sleep. But for most people, snoring affects relations with another person who must sleep in the same room. Snoring happens when the sleeping person breathes with the mouth open. In the back of the mouth the tissues surrounding the entrance of the throat are soft. As the person breathes, the movement of the air around the soft tissues causes them to move or vibrate. This tissue movement causes the sound we call snoring. A number of possible solutions have been proposed. Some devices keep the mouth shut. They force the patient to breathe only through the nose.A medical operation is also possible. Other devices listen for the sound of snoring and then wake the patient. The new anti-snoring device was developed by a dentist(牙医), George Wagner of the Indiana University School of Dentistry. He developed a piece of plastic that fits up against the inside of the mouth. The device keeps the soft tissues from vibrating and making the snoring noise. It is worn only at night. Several patients report that the simple device has ended their snoring problem.1.The passage mentions all the bad effects on the snorer EXCEPT______.A.harming his friendshipB.his lack of enough sleepC.disturbing his roommateD.his lack of enough oxygen正确答案:A2.People snore when______.A.part of their throat movesB.part of their throat becomes softC.they keep their mouths shutD.they breathe through mouth and nose正确答案:A3.How many solutions to the problem have been proposed so far?A.Three.B.Four.C.Five.D.Six.正确答案:B4.Which of the following statements about the new device is FALSE?A.It is worn at nightB.It was developed by a businessman.C.It is made of plastic.D.It has not been used by many people.正确答案:B5.What is the most likely place where one can find the passage?A.A novel.B.A newspaper.C.A textbook.D.A scientific journal.正确答案:DPassage TwoShopping for clothes is not the same experience for a man as it is for a woman. A man goes shopping because he needs something. His purpose is settled and decided in advance. He knows what he wants, and his objective is to find it and buy it: the price is a secondary consideration. All men simply walk into a shop and ask the assistant for what they want. If the shop has it in stock, the salesman promptly produces it, and the business of trying it on proceeds at once. All being well, the deal can be and often is completed in less than five minutes, with hardly any chat and to everyone’s satisfaction. Slight problems may begin for a man when the shop does not have what he wants, or does not have exactly what he wants. In that case the salesman always tries to sell the customer something else—he offers the nearest he can to the article required. Now how does a woman go about buying clothes? In almost every respect she does so in the opposite way. Her shopping is not often based on need. She has never fully made up her mind what she wants, and she is only “having a look round”. She is always open to persuasion: indeed she sets great store by what thesaleswoman tells her, even by what companions tell her. Upper-most in her mind is the thought of finding something that everyone thinks suits her. Contrary to a lot of jokes, most women have an excellent sense of value when they buy clothes. They are always on the lookout for the unexpected bargain. Faced with a roomful of dresses, a woman may easily spend an hour going from one rail to another, to and fro, before selecting the dresses she wants to try on. It is a laborious(费劲的)process, but apparently an enjoyable one. Most dress shops provide chairs for the waiting husbands.6.When men buy clothes,______.A.they choose things the salesman recommendsB.they buy right size things without trying them onC.they buy good quality things without a second considerationD.they do not mind how much they have to pay for the right things正确答案:D7.What is the men’s concern in terms of the fit of new clothes?A.They make sure what fits before going shopping.B.They do not worry whether a thing fits well or not.C.They like their clothes to be bigger than the average size.D.They often have no particular size in mind before going to the shop.正确答案:A8.What does the passage tell us about women’s shopping for clothes?A.They listen to advice but never take it.B.They rarely consider buying cheap clothes.C.They often do not have a clear aim in mind.D.They welcome suggestions from anyone around.正确答案:C9.It is implied in the passage that women______.A.like to buy cheap clothesB.always buy good quality clothes regardless of the priceC.tend to waste money on clothes which they don’t really wantD.think more of the price of clothes than of their colors and sizes正确答案:C10.Which of the following indicates the difference between men and women shoppers?A.Men do not try clothes on while women do.B.Women tend to be more talkative than men.C.Men do not spend as much time on buying.D.Women buy what they need but men do not.正确答案:CPassage ThreeIf you’ve been on campus for very long, I’m certain that you’ve already heard about this course. You may know that last term about fifty percent of the students who selected my course failed it. Let me explain how this came about before you jump to any conclusions. In the first place, since this is a composition class, I expect my students to follow certain rules of formality(形式). Unfortunately, students today dislike having to follow rules of any kind, especially those which they may feel to be unnecessary. For example, I ask that each of your papers be typed. I count off points for various kinds of mistakes. A misspelled word will cost you 5 points. You’ll lose 25 points if you misspell five words. If you write an incomplete sentence, you’ll lose 10 points. If you give me two complete sentences as one without adequate punctuation(标点),you’ll lose 15 points. I do not accept late papers. You will receive a zero for any theme(习作)which you fail to submit on time. I expect you to read each assignment. To make certain that you have read the assignment, I will give you a short unannounced quiz from time to time. This class meets on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. You will have a total of six major tests throughout the semester. Your final grade will be based on an average of these major tests and eight written themes. If you have any questions at any time, you can see me on Tuesdays. My office is on the second floor of this building. Your assignment for Wednesday is to read Hemingway’s short story on Page 55. Friday will be the last class day of this week, so you can expect to write a short in-class theme for me then.11.The course mentioned by the teacher is on______.A.readingB.assignmentsC.writingD.spelling正确答案:C12.When was this lecture given?A.On Monday.B.On Wednesday.C.On Thursday.D.On Friday.正确答案:A13.How many points will a student lose if he misspells 3 words and writes 2 incomplete sentences on a theme?A.25.B.35.C.40.D.45.正确答案:B14.During the term the students are required to______.A.write eight themesB.read Hemingway’s short storiesC.follow the rules of the schoolD.take six major tests and eight quizzes正确答案:A15.If the students have any questions, they may consult the teacher______.A.three times a weekB.in his office on TuesdaysC.at any appointed timeD.before or after class on Tuesdays正确答案:BSection BDirections: In this section, there is a passage with ten blanks. Please write your answers on Answer Sheet 2.One of Nature’s most exciting mysteries is how pigeons find their way home over vast distances. Now German scientists believe they have discovered how the birds do it. Research has revealed that tiny iron structures in their beaky(鸟嘴)allow them to analyze the earth’s magnetic field—much like a compass(罗盘). Through the signals picked up, the birds can work out where they are and set out on the best course home. As well as pigeons, many other birds display a remarkable ability to fly thousands of miles to return to a specific garden or tree year after year. Scientists are suggesting they may have similar iron-containing cells in their beaks. In the past, experts have suggested the birds use the sun and stars to navigate, although in 2004 researchers found that many follow roads rather than their internal compass to plan their route. However, scientists have long believed that they can in some way use the natural magnetism of the earth to navigate. The recent study by German scientists has revealed how this may be possible. The research used X-rays to examine the upper beaks of pigeons. They found that within the skin lining are tiny iron-containirg particles(微粒)in nerve branches which are arranged in a 3D pattern. The team, led by Gerta Fleissner, concluded that this allows the birds to react to the external magnetic field of the planet and work out their precise location. She pointed out that similar iron-containing cells had been found in the beaks of robins, warblers and chickens so it may well turn out to be the way that other species also navigate. Scientists are still discovering more about the incredible abilities of the pigeon. Questions:46.Pigeons find their way home by picking up signals from______.正确答案:the earth’s magnetic field47.Like pigeons, other birds can return home, because their beaks have______.正确答案:similar iron-containing cells48.In 2004 some researchers found that many birds do not______to plan their route.正确答案:use their internal compass49.The word “navigate” most probably means______.正确答案:to find one’s way50.The German research team was led by______.正确答案:Gerta FleissnerPart ⅣWriting51.Write a short essay of about 100 words on the topic Sports and Me. Firstly, we must be able to understand the language when we hear it spoken . Secondly, we must be able to speak it correctly ourselves. Thirdly, we must be able to read the language. And fourthly, we must be able to write it. We must be able to compose sentences that are grammatically correct. We must know how to arrange sentences in paragraphs, so as to write a good letter and composition. There is no easy way to have success in language learning. A good memory is a goodhelp, but it is not enough simply to memorize rules in a grammar book. It is not much use learning by heart long lists of words and their meanings. We must learn words not by themselves, but in sentences. We must learn by using the language. Practice is very important.Questions 11 to 13 are based on the passage you have just heard11. What is very important in learning a foreign language?12. What is the first step in learning a language?13. How should words be learned?Passage TwoWhen quite young, Daniel Webster did not always obey the' rules at school. One day the teacher caught him breaking a rule and asked him to come forward. to be punished, In that school, striking the open hand with a ruler was the punishment. Daniel's hands happened to be very dirty. Before going to the teacher's desk he wiped his hands on his. boots"Give me your hand, sir," demanded the teacher. Daniel put his fight hand out: The teacher looked at it a moment and said, "Daniel,: if you find' another hand' in this schoolroom as dirty as that, I'll let you go." Immediately from behind .Daniel's back came the left hand. "Here it is, sir," he replied. "That will do," said the teacher, laughing.. "You may go."Questions 14 to 16 are based on the passage you have Just heard14. Where did this story happen?15. Why was Daniel to be punished?16. Which of the following best describes. the boy?Passage ThreeThe word "sport" first meant something that people did in their free time. Later it often meant hunting wild animals and birds. About a hundred years ago the word was first used for organized games. This is the usual meaning of the word today. People spend a lot of their time playing football, basketball, tennis and many other sports. Many people play sports because they want to. A few people are paid for the sport they play. These people are called professional sportsmen. They may be sportsmen for only a few years, but during that time the best ones can earn a lot of money. For example, a professional footballer in England earns more than £30000 a year. The stars earn a lot more. International golf and tennis champions can make more than £ 500000 in a year. Of course, only few sportsmen can earn as much money as that. It is only possible in sports for individuals like golf, tennis and motor-racing. Perhaps the most surprising thing about sportsmen and money is this: the stars can earn more money from advertising than from playing their sports. An advertisement for sports equipment does not simply say "buy our things". It says: "Buy the same shirt and shoes as..." Famous sportsmen can even advertise things like watches and foods. They allow the companies to use their names or photographs and they are paid for this. Sport is no longer just something for people's spare time. You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the center.Questions 61 to 65 are based on the following passage:As supplier of most of the food we eat and of raw material for many industrial processes, agriculture is clearly an important area of the economy. But the productive performance of agriculture is even more important than this, because in nations where the productivity of farmers is low, most of the working population is needed to raise food and few people are available for production of industrial goods or for other activities required for economic growth. Indeed, one of the factors related most closely to the per capita income ( 人均收入 ) of a nation is the number of its population engaged in farming. In the poorest nations of the world, more than half of the population lives on farms. This compares sharply with less than 10 percent in Western Europe and less than 4 percent in the United States. In short, the course of economic development in general depends in a fundamental way on the productive performance of farmers. This performance, in turn, depends on how agriculture is organized and on the economic environment, or market structure, within which it works. In the following pages the performance of American agriculture is examined. It is reasonable to begin with a consideration of its market structure.61. This passage is most probably part of ______.A) a news item B) an advertisement C) a lecture D) an article62. In the schools of ancient Greece and Rome, testing usually consisted of saying poetry aloud or giving speeches. In the European universities of the Middle Ages, students who were working for advanced degrees had to discuss questions in their field of study with people who had made a special study of the subject. This custom exists today as part of the process of testing students for the doctor's degree.Generally, however, modern examinations are written. The written examination, where all students are tested on the same questions, was probably not known until the nineteenth century. Perhaps it came into existence with the great increase in population and development of modern industry. A room full of students for a state examination, timed exactly by electric clocks and carefully watched over by managers, resembles a group of workers at an automobile factory. Certainly, during examinations teachers and students are expected to act like machines. One type of test is sometimes called an objective test. It is intended to deal with facts, not personal opinions. To set an objective test the teacher writes a series of questions, each of which has only one correct answer. Along with each question the teacher writes the correct answer and also three statements that look like answers to students who have not learned the material properly.66. In the Middle Ages students______.A) took objective tests B) were timed by electric clocksC) specialized in one subject D) seldom took written exams67. According to the police records that have been studied for five years from over 2400 cities and towns, a surprising link is shown between changes in the season and crime patterns. The pattern of crime has varied very little over a long period of years. Murder reaches its high during July and August, as do other violent attacks. Murder, moreover, is more than seasonal: it is a weekend crime. It is also a nighttime crime: 62 percent of murders are committed between 6 p. m. and 6 a. m.Unlike the summer high in crimes of bodily harm, robbing has a different cycle. You are most likely to be robbed between 6 p. m. and 2 a. m. on a Saturday night in December, January, or February. The month with least crimes of all? May - except for one strange fact. More dog bites are reported in this month than in any other month of the year. Apparently our seasonal cycles of knowledge are completely different from our tendencies for crimes. Professor Huntington made extensive studies to discover the seasons when people read serious books, attend scientific meetings and get highest results on examinalions. In all cases, he found a spring high and autumn high separated by a summer low.Possibly, high temperature and high humidity (?jg) cause our strange and violent summer actions, but police officials are not sure. "There is. of course, no proof of a connection between humidity and murder," they say. "Why murder's high time should come in ihe summer time we really don't know. " 17271. Some people in places where television reception is good may think that television has taken the place of radio. Television, however, is actually a kind of radio. It uses special equipment for sending and receiving the picture. The television sound system uses the same type of equipment that is used in other forms of radio.Exchanging messages with ships at sea was one of the first uses of radio. Modern radio is still used for this purpose and for communication across oceans. On land radio provides a means of instant communication even with moving vehicles such as taxicabs or service trucks.Police force use two-way radio to get information to and from officers in squadcars (警备车) and on motorcycles. Small portable sets make it possible to communicate with a central exchange while walking or riding in a city or over a rural area. Observers in airplanes can report traffic accidents, and traffic jams by radio to police officers on the ground.Radiotelephones are used in many places. Connection with the regular telephone service can be provided for boats, trains and cars. Isolated places in deserts, forests, and mountainous regions are linked by radiotelephone in many parts of the world. Thus by means of radio people can communicate with others wherever service is provided.61. According to the passage, television .A) has taken the place of radio B) is no longer popular in the homeC) can be regarded as a kind of radio D) has nothing in common with radio62. In paragraph two “this purpose” refers to .A) exchanging messages with ships at seaB) communicating across oceansC) sending and receiving the pictureD) instant communication with moving vehicles63. According to the passage, radio is used in the following ways EXCEPT.A) at sea B) on landC) in the air D) underground64. The word “Isolated” in the last paragraph means .A) sandy and mountainous B) clean and not pollutedC) without any living things D) separated or distant65. The best title for the passage is .A) Television and Radio B) Radio and Its UsesC) Radio and Radiotelephones D) Modern CommunicationPassage TwoQuestions 66 to 70 are based on the following passage:The dog, called Prince, was an intelligent animal and a slave to Williams. From morning till night, when Williams was at home, Prince never left his sight, practically ignoring all other members of the family. The dog had a number of clearly defined duties, for which Williams had patiently trained him and, like the good pupil he was, Prince lived for the chance to demonstrate his abilities. When Williams wanted to put on his boots, he would murmur “Boots” and within seconds the dog would drop them at his feet. At nine every morning Prince ran off to the general store in the village, returning shortly not only with Willia ms’s daily paper but with a half-ounce packet of Williams’s favorite tobacco, John Rhiney’s Mixed. A gun-dog (猎狗) by breed, Prince possessed a large soft mouth specially evolved (进化) for the safe carrying of huntedcreature, so the paper and the tobacco came to no harm, never even showing a tooth mark.Williams was a railway man, an engine driver, and he wore a blue uniform which smelled of oil fuel. He had no work at odd times—“days”, “late days” or “nights”. Over the years Prince got to know these periods of work and rest, knew when his master would leave the house and return, and the dog did not waste this knowledge. If Williams overslept, as he often did, Prince barked at the bedroom door until he woke, much to the annoyance of the family. On his retu rn, Williams’s slippers were brought to him, the paper and tobacco too if previously undelivered.A curious thing happened to Williams during the snow and the ice of last winter. One evening he slipped and fell on the icy pavement somewhere between the village and his home. He was so badly shaken that he stayed in bed for three days and not until he got up and dressed again did he discover that he had lost his wallet containing over fifty pounds. The house was turned upside down in the search, but the wallet was not found. However, two days later—that was five days after the all—Prince dropped the wallet into Williams’s hand. Very muddy, dirty and wet through, the little case still contained fifty-three pounds, Williams’s driving license and a few othe r papers. Where the dog had found it no one could tell, but found that he had recognized it probably by the faint oil smell on the worn leather. 66. What does the passage tell us about gun-dog?A) They are the fastest runners of all dogs.B) Their teeth are removed when they are young.C) They can carry birds, etc. without hurting them.D) They can produce many young dogs.67. It annoyed Williams’s family when .A) Williams had to go to work at nightB) the dog made loud sounds in the houseC) the dog was used to traveling by trainD) the dog was confused about the time of the day68. The dog eventually found Williams’s wallet because .A) he knew where Williams had fallenB) he had seen it there and recognized itC) it contained over fifty poundsD) it had the smell familiar to him69. Which of the following is true of Williams according to the passage?A) He often did not get enough sleep.B) He often slept later than he should.C) He did not drink heavilyD) He liked saving money.70. Which of the following is the best description of Prince?A) He was clever and loyal to Williams.B) He liked the sight of his owner.C) He understood human language.D) He was the best fired with William’s family.Passage ThreeQuestions 71 to 75 are based on the following passage:The failed Skylab (空间站) will come screaming home to earth in disappointment sometime next month, but it will fall we know not where. That precise information is beyond even the calculations of scientists and their computers. The best they can tell us is that the space station, weighing 77 tons and as high as a 12-story building, will break into hundreds of pieces that will be scattered across a track 100 miles wide and 4000 miles long.We are again exposed to one of those unexpected adventures, or misadventures, of science that attracts our attention from the boring routines of daily existence and encourages us to think a lot about man’s futur e.What worries Richard Smith, the Skylab’s director, is the “big pieces”that will come through the atmosphere. Two lumps, weighing 2 tons each, and ten weighing at least 1,000 pounds each, will come in at speeds of hundreds of miles an hour, and if they crash on land they will dig holes up to 100 feet deep. What worries us, with our lack of scientific knowledge and our quick imagination, is both the big and small pieces, although project officials say there is very little chance that anyone will be injured by them. That is good to know, but it does not remove the doubts of the millions who still remember the unclear accident at Three Mile Island. That accident took place in 1979 in spite of what scientists had assured us as to the safety of the nuclear reactor.71. Where the Skylab will fall .A) cannot be predicted even by computersB) is kept secret from the whole worldC) is made public to all countriesD) is predicted by the scientists involved in the program72. The broken Skylab will .A) be in two lumps—one weighing 2 tons and the other weighing 10 tonsB) fall with the force of a 12-story buildingC) cover a large round areaD) break into 12 big pieces and hundreds of smaller ones73. In the fourth paragraph, we are told that .A) people usually do not pay attention to the environmentB) people expect to be exposed to dangers in their daily existenceC) the accident makes people worry about our safety on the earthD) most people consider their life boring74. The author refers to the accident of Three Mile Island .A) to express his doubts about scientists’ assuranceB) because he fears that a piece of the Skylab may strike a nuclear reactorC) to remind the reader of the terrible accidentD) because the nuclear reactor there and the Skylab were built by the samecompany75. What does the author mainly try to tell us in the passage?A) Science and technology need improving.B) Science may bring disasters to the human race.C) People should not readily believe experts.D) Ordinary people are more imaginative than scientists.Part ⅤTranslation from English into Chinese Directions: In this part there is a passage with 5 underlined parts, numbered 76 to 80.After reading the passage carefully, translate the underlined sections intoChinese. Remember to write your translation on the Translation Sheet.English is not only used as a foreign language, it also has some kind of special status (地位) in those countries where it has been chosen as an official language. This is the case in Ghana and Nigeria, for example, where the governments have chosen English as the main language to carry on the affairs of government, education, commerce, the media, and the legal system. (76)In such cases, people have to learn English if they want to get success in life. (77)They have their mother-tongue to begin with and they start learning English, in school or in the street, at an early age. For them, in due course, English will become a language to fall back on—when their mother-tongue proves to be inadequate for communication—talking to people from a different background, for example, or to people from outside the country. For them, English becomes their “second” language. In 1985, the population of India was estimated to be 768 million. English is an official language here, alongside Hindi. (78)Several other languages have special status in their own regions, but English is the language of the legal system; it is a major language in Parliament; and it is a preferred language in the universities and in the all-India competitive exams for senior posts in such fields as the civil service and engineering. Some 3,000 English newspapers are published throughout the country. There is thus great reason to learn to use the language well. In red terms, (79)the English speakers of India may only number 70 million—a small amount compared with the total population. On the other hand, this figure is well in excess of thepopulation in Britain. When all the estimates for second-language use around the world are added up, we reach a figure of around 300 million speakers—about as many as the total of the mother-tongue users. But we have to remember that most of these countries are in parts of the world (Africa, South America) where the population increase is four times as great as that found in mother-tongue countries. (80) If present trends continue, within a generation mother-tongue English use will have been left far behind.Part ⅥReading ComprehensionDirections: In this part there are five Chinese sentences, numbered 81 to 85. Translate these sentences into English and write them on the Translation Sheet.81.为了保护环境,我们必须减少各种污染。

The American Academy of Medicine suggested last week that doctors work with parents to evaluate how much TV kids watch and what they see, what video and computer games they play, which websites they visit on the Internet, whether they view R-rated videos without the company of their parents, what music they like and what books they read. Doctors are worried that kids who spend too much time in front of the tube don’t get enough exercise and can become overweight. The academy is also concerned that the messages kids get from entertainment media can make them more violent and sexually active. (12) The academy recommends that children under age two not watch any TV. “Children need activities to stimulate the brain during the first two years of life,” says Dr. Miriam Baron, who chairs the academy’s committee on public education. “They need feedback and socialization.” Older children, she says, should watch TV in a common area. (13) Their bedrooms should be “electronic media-free”zones where they can have a quiet place to read, study, play or just relax. Questions 11 to 13 are based on the passage you have just heard.11. What unusual question may doctors ask when giving kids a checkup next time?12. What does the American Academy of Medicine suggest that children under age two should do?13. One such expression is “pull up your socks”. (14) It means “try to do better” or “improve your performance”. Imagine a basketball team near the end of an important game. The players are lousy and they are so tired that even their socks look tired. The tops of their socks are falling down their shoes. The coach calls a time-out to talk to his team. “Take a deep breath,” he tells them. “Get organized. If you pull up your socks, you can win the game.”He is telling them they can win if they start playing better. A newspaper once reported that a political leader told the members of his party that they needed to pull up their socks and get back in the game. Another expression is “sock the money away”. (15) It means “to save some money”instead of “spending it”. A friend of mine tells you, for example, that she is socking some money away for a holiday trip. Word experts say the expression probably came from people hiding their savings in a sock instead of putting it into a bank. Questions 14 to 16 are based on the passage you have just heard.14. Each passage is followedby some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A), B), C) and D). Several patients report that the simple device has ended their snoring problem.31.The passage mentions all the bad effects on the snorer EXCEPT______.A.harming his friendshipB.his lack of enough sleepC.disturbing his roommateD.his lack of enough oxygen正确答案:A32.People snore when______.A.part of their throat movesB.part of their throat becomes softC.they keep their mouths shutD.they breathe through mouth and nose正确答案:A33.How many solutions to the problem have been proposed so far?A.Three.B.Four.C.Five.D.Six.正确答案:B34.Which of the following statements about the new device is FALSE?A.It is worn at nightB.It was developed by a businessman.C.It is made of plastic.D.It has not been used by many people.正确答案:B35.What is the most likely place where one can find the passage?A.A novel.B.A newspaper.C.A textbook.D.A scientific journal.正确答案:DPassage TwoShopping for clothes is not the same experience for a man as it is for a woman. She is always open to persuasion: indeed she sets great store by what the saleswoman tells her, even by what companions tell her. Most dress shops provide chairs for the waiting husbands.36.When men buy clothes,______.A.they choose things the salesman recommendsB.they buy right size things without trying them onC.they buy good quality things without a second considerationD.they do not mind how much they have to pay for the right things正确答案:D37.What is the men’s concern in terms of the fit of new clothes?A.They make sure what fits before going shopping.B.They do not worry whether a thing fits well or not.C.They like their clothes to be bigger than the average size.D.They often have no particular size in mind before going to the shop.正确答案:A38.What does the passage tell us about women’s shopping for clothes?A.They listen to advice but never take it.B.They rarely consider buying cheap clothes.C.They often do not have a clear aim in mind.D.They welcome suggestions from anyone around.正确答案:C39.It is implied in the passage that women______.A.like to buy cheap clothesB.always buy good quality clothes regardless of the priceC.tend to waste money on clothes which they don’t really wantD.think more of the price of clothes than of their colors and sizes正确答案:C40.Which of the following indicates the difference between men and women shoppers?A.Men do not try clothes on while women do.B.Women tend to be more talkative than men.C.Men do not spend as much time on buying.D.Women buy what they need but men do not.正确答案:CPassage ThreeIf you’ve been on campus for very long, I’m certain that you’ve already heard about this course. Questions:76.Pigeons find their way home by picking up signals from______.正确答案:the earth’s magnetic field77.Like pigeons, other birds can return home, because their beaks have______.正确答案:similar iron-containing cells。
