However, many adult s do not get eight hours of sleep each night. The average adul t today gets only 6.4 hours of sleep. Only in recent years have health professionals begun to realize the seriousness of slee p deprivation in the working population. A significant numberof people work at night, work long hours, or suffer from sleepl essness or jet lag.Studies show that the brain is negatively affected by sleep de privation because certain patterns of electrical and chemical a ctivity that occur during sleep are interrupted and the brain ca nnot function normally. In one study, thirteen healthy adult su bjects who usually had normal sleep patterns were kept awak e and carefully monitored in a lab during a period of 35 hours. During the experiment, the subjects were asked to perform s everal tasks, such as mathematics and word problems, while undergoing scans of their brain activity. The researchers foun d that the temporal lobe (颞叶) of the brain, the region involved in language processing, w as active during speech tasks in rested subjects but not in sub jects who lacked enough sleep. After several hours without sl eep, there was no activity within this region.Several studies show that getting fewer than six hours of slee p can damage short-term memory and reaction time—thus causing a serious risk of accident. In one study of drivers , researchers reported that sleep deprivation had the same eff ects as being drunk. They found that people who drove after b eing awake for 17 hours performed worse than those with a bl ood alcohol level of 0.5 percent, the legal limit for drunk driving in most western European countries. The researchers concl uded that countries with drunk driving laws should consider si milar restrictions against sleep-deprived driving.12. AWith over 2.4 million visitors every year, Cinque Terre is one of the most-visited regions in Italy. Cinque Terreis truly special. The five candy-colored fishing villages of Riomaggiore, Manarola, Comiglia, Vemazza, and Monterosso al Mare are built into cliffs over the clean and brightly-shining Ligurian Sea. Whether you’re visiting the region for a few days or a few weeks, these are the experiences you should add to your trip pleasure.★Take a scenic hike. It’s easy to visit each of the attractive villages on foot. The most popular hike is the coastal path Sentiero Azzuro. It links all five villages and offers extremely beautiful scenery of the sea, architecture and vineyards(葡萄园). It takes about six hours to go across, with short breaks, but most people are going to stop in the villages for food and swimming.★Eat seafood in a cone(锥形).Dessert lovers might think that Italian ice-cream is the best thing to be served in a cone but make room for seafood cones as well. Thanks to its coastal location, Cinque Terre is full of seafood restaurants.★Get on a boat.If the weather cooperates, take the time to get out on the water. The villages look very beautiful from a boat. The cheapest and easiest way is to jump on the public ferry from one of the villages to the next, but these boats are often crowded. It’s far more relaxing to take a private cruise, which departs from the docks in Riomaggiore, Manarola, Vemazza, and Monterosso al Mare.★Take the train.Cinque Terre’s train system is one of the most scenic in Europe. The high-speed train runs through each of thefive villages every 20 minutes or so. And the whole line is directly on the coast, offering lovely views of the Ligurian Sea and rocky cliffs.1. What is special about the five candy-colored fishing villages?A. Their special location.B. Their long history.C. Their delicious foods.D. Their friendly villagers.2. What is the favorite food for the hikers in the five villages?A. Italian noodles.B. Italian ice-cream.C. Italian wines.D. Seafood cones.3. What is the best way to enjoy the beautiful scenery and delicious food?A. Taking a private ferry to the villages.B. Walking with short breaks on the coast.C. Taking a scenic hike along the coastal path.D. Taking the train running through the villages.BIt can be a real struggle trying to learn a new language. I had always enjoyed learning languages in school, but only recently did I start learning German. I found that I could understand and learn individual words easily, but when it came to literature, I really struggled. That was when my tutor at university suggested reading some children’s books printed in the target language. At first, I felt a bit silly going on a hunt for a book designed for someone half my age, but then I realized thateveryone has to start somewhere. As children, we are given these basic texts to familiarize our brains with certain vocabulary and writing structures, and from there, we can learn and develop. I started with books which are taught to us as children in the UK. I managed to find Oliver Twist by Charles Dickens and James and the Giant Peach by Roald Dahl. The beauty of reading books that were introduced to you as a child is that you are already familiar with the plot.As a result, you can work out some of the definitions of words with your prior knowledge of the story. At first, I used to read with the book in one hand and a dictionary in the other, but this method did not work well for me. The method I would recommend is to read a chapter of your chosen children’s book and at the end of that chapter, highlight the words you do not know and then look up the definitions. If you can wait a bit before you use a dictionary, you may be surprised what you can get merely from the context of the sentence in the story. Additionally, a lot of children’s books have pictures which may give you a clue as to what or to whom the passage is referring.4. Why was the author advised to read children’s books?A. She was weak in reading great works.B. She was slow to learn language.C. She liked children’s literature.D. She couldn’t remember any words.5. What can be got from children’s books according to the passage?A. V ocabulary and listening skills.B. Learning methods.C. Words and structures.D. Designing skills.6. What surprised the author while reading children’s books?A. Grasping the context from the pictures.B. Looking up the definitions of words from a dictionary.C. Getting familiar with the plots of the story.D. Understanding the words simply from the context.7. What can be the best title of the passage?A. Reading Children’s BooksB. The Way of Learning LanguagesC. The Method of Using DictionaryD. My Good Reading HabitsCWith self-driving vehicle technology rapidly advancing, many companies are turning to autonomous robots forthe final leg of the delivery process, from the store or local distribution center to the customer. The latest to join the trend is e-commerce giant Amazon. Following a successful eight-month test run in SnohomishCounty, Washington, the company’s Scout robots have been making the rounds of Irvine, California, since August 6, 2019.The six-wheeled Scout is about the size of a large cooler with the capacity to carry small or medium-sized packages. The battery-powered vehicle, which moves at a regular walking pace, has been programmed to avoid pedestrians, animals, and unexpected obstacles, such as garbage cans. Its powerful sensors can also detect the movement of a car backing out of a driveway. To accelerate Scout’s development and bring it nationwide sooner, the company has created several detailed virtual maps of American suburbs and conducted trial deliveries to homes there.Though Amazon has not shown how Scout ensures the delivery is picked up by the right person, it most likelyrequires the customer to apply a unique code, texted to them prior to the delivery, to unlock the store box. Also unclear is the number of deliveries Scout can complete before its battery needs to be recharged. Though the initial tests are being conducted with a human for company, the robot will be autonomous in the future. Its location, however, will be tracked at all times-if someone attempts to steal Scout, Amazon employees will be instantly sensed. However, the eco-friendly robots are unable to climb stairs or open gates, which means that they can only reachconsumers who live on the ground level. Additionally, the robots are unable to leave packages at the front door if the customers are not home. Whether these problems get resolved remains to be seen. For now, it appears that humans will still be needed to achieve the ever-growing demand for home and office deliveries.8.What are many companies developing autonomous robots for?A. Final tests.B. The so-called last mile.C. Robots’ safety.D. Delivery speed.9.What can we infer about Scout from paragraph 2?A. It looks like a cooler.B. It adjusts its speed accordingly.C. Its sensors play a key role.D. It will be widely used soon.10.What does the underlined phrase "prior to" in paragraph 4 mean?A. beforeB. afterC. in front ofD. due to11.From which is the text probably taken?A. A biology textbook.B. A health magazine.C. A newspaper.D. A travel brochure.DWood has many great characteristics that make it the perfect building material. It is cheap, durable(耐用的), easily available, and most importantly, environmentally sustainable. The one thing it is not, is transparent(透明的).Now thanks to a team of scientists at Stockholm’s KTH Royal Institute of Technology, the material may even beable to add that feature to its already impressive list.Lead researcher Dr. Lars Berglund said he was inspired to create the transparent wood after learning how Japanese researchers had developed a see-through paper for use in flexible display screens for electronic devices. The team began by pulling out the wood’s lignin (木质素). The lignin-free wood was then dipped into a polymer(聚合物) and baked at a temperature of 158F for four hours. The result was a hybrid product that was not only stronger and lighter than the original wood but also, almost transparent. The researchers were able to adjust the level of transparency by varying the amount of the polymer injected and also by changing the thickness of the wood. While scientists have previously created a see-through wood for small-scale applications like computer chips, the transparent wood is the first one being considered for large scale applications. The researchers, who revealed their findings in Biomacromolecules on April 11, picture using the transparent wood in buildings to allow for more natural light, or to create windows that let in the desired amount of light without sacrificing privacy.Wood that allows light to pass through could lead to a brighter future for homes and buildings. Berglund also thinks the wood could play a significant role in the design of solar panels. The semi-transparent material would be able to keep light longer and give it more time to interact with the conductor, thus resulting in better solar efficiency.Additionally, substituting the currently used glass with this new product would help solar energy manufacturersimprove their carbon footprint and lower the cost. They are now experimenting with ways to scale up the manufacturing process so that the transparent material is cost-effective to make and easy to use.12. What does the underlined part "that feature" in Paragraph 1 refer to?A. Cheapness.B. Durability.C. Sustainability.D. Transparency.13. Which of the following is not the process in which the transparent wood is made?A. Dip the wood into a polymer.B. Reduce the amount of the polymer.C. Make the wood lignin-free.D. Bake the wood for some time.14. What’s the purpose of using the transparent wood in buildings?A. To protect privacy.B. To scale out applications.C. To get more natural light.D. To observe more clearly.15. What is the last paragraph mainly about?A. The bright future of the transparent wood.B. The wood’s role in the design of solar panels.C. The disadvantages of the currently used glass.D. Solar energy manufacturers’ carbon footprint.第二节(共5小题:每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。

Their songs are thought to attract females in high frequencysounds while to compete with other males in low frequency sounds. Research ledby the Wildlife Conservation Society has now made a new discovery. The studylooked at the songs of two humpback whale populations, basedon soundrecordings collected from 2013 to 2018. One group was based in the SouthAtlantic, off the coast of Gabon, and the other in the Indian Ocean nearMadagascar. Analysis of the recordingsshowed that the two groups picked up musical ideas from each other and borrowedphrases and themes into their latest song. This suggested that the males fromthe two groups came into contact with each other over the five years and sharedsongs. To uncoverthis musical cooperation, researchers recorded the songs and transcribethem into more than 1,500 individual sounds and patterns, or song units. They found that the units were composed intolarger phrases, which were then repeated to form themes. These themes were sungfor hours at a time, or even days. By 2018, both populations have been singinglargely the same songs.“Thissimilarity in the songs shows that these two populations come into closercontact than other southern populations, explains Dr Melinda Rekdahl, leadingauthor of the study. While 5G is set to be used in somelimited areas of America this year, much of the world is not expected toreceive widely available service until 2023.One project in Britain, however, is already testing this superfast technology on an unlikely group ofInternet users-cows. The project was developed by American technology companyCisco Systems. It also receives money from the British government. Ciscosays the program seeks to explore the future of 5G connectivity in rural areasaround the world.Testing areas were set up atfarms in three rural areas of England. The cows are equipped with 5G-connecteddevices that link up to a robotic milking system, which uses sensors andmachine learning to fully automate the process. System designers say technologytakes over after a cow feels ready to be milked and walks toward an automaticgate. The device is designed to recognize each individual cow. It thenpositions equipment to the right body position for milking. During the process, machines release food for the cow as a reward.Other 5G technology toolsinclude automated brushes that turn on when the cow rubs up against them.Sensors also control the amount of light to the cows’ living areas depending onthe weather. And, an automatic feeding system makes sure the animals always getenough to eat.Duncan Forbes, head of theproject, told Reuters that the project shows the farm’s cow operations can begreatly improved with 5G technology and that the experiment provides strongevidence that 5G technology can be widely used in the future, not just on farmsin Britain, but in rural communities across the world.(1)What is the purpose of Cisco Systems’ program?A . Classical economic theoriessuggest that the greater the appeal, the less likely we are to be honest—but anew study turns the idea on its head, finding altruism, and a powerful hate for viewing oneself as a “thief”outweigh the financial attraction.A team of researchers conducteda huge experiment concerning 355 cities in 40 countries. More than 17,000identical wallets were dropped off at public places, each containing a grocerylist, a key, and three business cards in the local language using made-up namesand an email address. Some had no money while others contained the equivalent of$13.45.According to the research, people on average returned 40% of walletswith no money in them but 51%withmoney. It also shows extreme differences between countries. But although ratesof people’s honesty varied greatly from country to country, one thing remainedremarkably constant: wallets with money, as opposed to no money, raisedreporting rates. In the US, the UK and Poland, they repeated the experiment with even more money: $94.15, which increasedreporting rates by an average of 11% compared to the smaller amount. They alsofound that having a key expanded reporting rates by 9.2%.The findings, which runcounter to a fundamental principle of classical economics, suggest honesty, altruism and self-image can sometimes be more influential than economicself-interest.A purely economic approach tobehavior suggests people would keep the wallets with the larger amounts ofmoney due to the increased financial reward, but economics often doesn’taccount for a person’s sense of honesty or self-image, according to behavioralscientists. Altruism also influenced the findings, the researchers say. Sincethe key is valuable to the owner but not the finder, this pointed toward analtruism concern in addition to the cost of negatively updating one’s selfimage.(1)What does the author intend to do in Paragraph 2?A . Introduce a new topic for discussion.B . Add some background information.C . Describe a widely conducted experiment.D . Provide the research results for the readers.(2)What’s the average reporting r ate of a wallet with $94.15 inside?A . 11%.B . 20.2%.C . 51%.D . 62%.(3)What does the underlined phrase “run counter to” in Paragraph 5 mean?A . Go against.B . Account for.C . Agree with.D . Focus on.(4)What’s the main idea of the text?A . Classical economic theories have already been out of date.B . People are more likely to return a lost wallet with more cash.C . An experiment conducted worldwide proves people’s altruism.D . When Nazi Germany is featured in these films, cruel Nazi officers and brutal concentration camps most often represent it. But the new Hollywood movie Valkyrie tells a di fferent story, “a chapter of German history which is little known abroad”, according to the German Cultural Minister Bernd Neumann.Valkyrie is based on a true incident that took place in 1944. Colonel Stauffenberg had been a loyal soldier for his entire military career. However, after losing an eye, a hand, and three fingers in an Allied bombing, he reached breaking point. The destruction that his country had brought to its European neighbors had bee too terrible for the colonel to bear in silence. He hoped that someone would find a way to stop Adolf Hitler, one of the most evil tyrants the world has ever known. Realizing that time was running out, he decided that he must take action himself and joined the German resistance. These men drew up Operation Valkyrie, a plot to assassinate (murder) Hitler and to overthrow his Nazi government from the inside. This plot is what the film is named after and focuses on.The Hollywood star Tom Cruise plays the lead role. “This was a very challenging film to make. We c arried a huge responsibility to correctly portray history,” Cruise said. However, the production has drawn criticism for lacking depth and for simplifying the motives behind the plot.16.The passage tells us that Valkyrie is _____.A.a story written by Bernd NeumanB. a chapter in a German history bookC. a movie about Nazi concentration campsD. a movie about a plan to assassinate Hitler17.What does the sentence “he reached breaking point” probably mean?A.He narrowly escaped being killed.B. It provides a coordinated program of investment credits, research grants, education reforms, and tax changes designed to make American industry more petitive. This is necessary to reverse the economic slide into unemployment, lack of growth, and trade deficits that have plagued the economy for the past six years. The most liberal wing of the President's party has called for stronger and more direct action. They want an ines policy to check inflation while federal financing helps rebuild industry behind a wall of protective tariffs. The Republicans, however, decry even the modest, graduated tax increases in the President's program. They want tax cuts and more open market. They say if federal money has to be injected into the economy, let it through defence spending. Both these alternatives ignore the unique nature of the economic before us. It is not simply a matter of markets or financing. The new technology allows vastly increased production for those able to master it. But it also threatens those who fail to adopt it with permanent second-class citizenship in the world economy. If an industry cannot lever itself up to the leading stage of technological advances,' then it will not be able to pete effectively. If it cannot do this, no amount of government protectionism or access to foreign markets can keep it profitable for long. Without the profits and experience of technological excellence to reinvest, that industry can only fall still farther behind its foreign petitors. So the crux is the technology and that is where president's program focused. The danger is not that a plan will not be passed, it is that the ideologues of right and left will distort the bill with amendments that will blur its focus on technology. The economic restructuring plan should be passed intact. If we fail to restructure our economy now, we may not get a second chance.27.What is the requirement of the most liberal wing of the Democratic-party?A.They want a more direct action.B.They want an ines policy to check inflation.C.They want to rebuild industry.D.They want a wall of protective tariffs.28.What is the editors attitude toward the economic restructuring plan?A.supportiveB.indifferentC.disapprovingDpromising29.The focus of the President's program is on ________.A.investmentB.economyC.technologyD.tax30. The danger to the plan lies in ________.A.the two parties' objectionB.different idea of the two parties about the planC.its passageD.improper revision of its focus(E)Our mobile devices give us a remarkable ability: to document every moment of our lives. But in our relentless attempt to curate all of these experiences for others using a variety of filters, are we missing perhaps the most important filter of all- a 'moral' one?The latest example of the moral ambiguities of curation in a mobile world came this week, when the New York Post published a photo taken seconds before a man who had been pushed onto the subway tracks was fatally struck. The photo was published on the Post's front page with the chilling headline, 'Doomed' This wasn't the first time a witness to a casualty has opted to capture an image rather than help the victim, but this time, the subway photo controversy extended beyond a single photojournalist faced with a moral dilemma. According to accounts of the tragic NYC subway incident, there were other onlookers as well, snapping photos and recording video in the fateful 22 seconds, rather than attempting to help the victim. If this tragic scenario sounds familiar, that's because it is. Malcolm Gladwell described a similar type of event in his book, The TIPPING Point. In 1964, thirty-eight different New Yorkersrefused to help a woman who was being murdered in their neighborhood despite hearing her cries for help. The case of Kitty Genovese was so inexplicable at the time that psychologists have even given it a name- the 'bystander effect'. That people could be aware of such a tragic event happening in front of them and still be unresponsive could only be attributed to a societal diffusion of responsibility. Each of the 38 bystanders felt that enough people were witnessing the event that each of them, individually was no longer responsible for being involved. If anything, our mobile devices have intensified this. When faced with difficult or awkward social situations, we often retreat into observer mode, confident that the appearance of being engaged with our device will absolve us of any individual responsibility to act. Yet, when we bee silent curators of the world around us, we run the risk of distancing ourselves from our subjects so pletely that we no longer feel the moral imperative to act.During the early years of the social media boom, expert mentators liked to say that society was moving from a 'lean back' mode to a 'lean forward' mode. Instead of leaning back and passively consuming TV on our couches, we were leaning forward and adding our voices to the conversation via the Web. We seemed to be more engaged with what was happening in the world around us, interacting with others across many different platforms and seemingly turning every event into a chance for active participation. It would be a shame if the mobile revolution turns out to be a step backward, transforming all of us once again into passive curators of the world around us, rather than active participants. Consider that, as a society, we have reached a point where it is pletely acceptable to see two people having dinner together, curating photos of the food in front of them rather than conversing with each other. Many of us seem to walk around with our heads permanently down, furiously tapping away on our tiny screens rather than engaging with others. Then, when an event happens - tragic or otherwise - many of us reflexively turn to the screen to capture it, putting us all at risk of turning into mobile bystanders.31.It can be inferred from Paragraph 2 that________.A. the photojournalist who took the subway photo was from New York PostB. the man who died in the accident mitted suicideC. the photojournalist and the bystanders are thought as immoral.D. all the bystanders were busy snapping photos or recording videos32.The subway photo controversy extended beyond a single photojournalist because ________.A. he was supposed to play his moral partB. the publicized photo aroused sympathy among the publicC. life saving should go before any professional dutyD. other onlookers had the same response as the photojournalist33. The 'bystander effect' is caused by ________.A. the widespread use of mobile devicesB. people's decreasing moralityC. the large amount of bystandersD. the dispersion of responsibility34.Which of the following belongs to a 'lean forward' mode?A.Watching TV on the couches.B. Four of my parents' seven children don't have birth certificates. We have no medical records because we were born at home and have never seen a doctor or nurse. We have no school records because we've never set foot in a classroom. WhenI'm9, I will be issued a Delayed Certificate of Birth, but at this moment, according to the state of Idaho and the federal government, I do not exist.Of course, I did exist. I had grown up watching for the sun to darken, for the moon to drip as if with blood. I spent my summers bottling peaches and my winters rotating supplies.I had been educated in the rhythms of the mountain, rhythms in which change was never fundamental, only cyclical. But eternity belonged only to the mountain. All my father's stories were about our mountain, our valley. Under the agreement, 5G Wi-Fi signals will cover the Palace Museum, China's royal palace from 1420 to 1911, and the branch museum of the institution under construction in northwestern Beijing.“It’s essential to always stay close to the latest technology to better serve the public,” said Shan Jixiang, former director of the Palace Museum. Shan said there is still much room for improvement in the handling of a huge number of cultural relics (文物),such as when the priceless painting Along the River During the Qingming Festival is exhibited again in the future. When it was last exhibited in 2015, visitors stood in long lines until 3 am to get a glimpse. The museum ended up preparing instant noodles to serve the hungry visitors. “I don't want that scenario to reoccur," Shan said. “Our operation can be done in a more scientific way.The new system will also make use of the closed--circuits television cameras that are set up all over the Palace Museum to safeguard the museum's precious relics. More than 1.86 million of them are housed at the museum, which recorded nearly 20 million visits from the public last year, topping all museums worldwide. “How can we make sure no single visitor who might have evil ideas threatens these treasures?" Shan said. “After adopting the internet of things, we can instantly detect any motion involving the artifacts to prevent such threats.”The 5G network also will be used to improve remote consultation through webcams, which will facilitate conversations with overseas scholars to jointly find the best answers for restoration and preservation issues.28. Surprisingly it was correct 70 per cent of the time, and the findings could lead to smarter artificial intelligence in the future. The study published in the journal Behavior and Information Technology was carried out by researchers at the Islamic University of Technology in Bangladesh, reports Live Science. In the research 25 people ranging from 15 to 40 years old were asked to retype two paragraphs from Alice's Adventures in Wonderland written by Lewis Carroll. They also hadto enter their emotional state every 30 minutes while doing their regular activities on the computer. This allowed the program an opportunity to understand how their emotions changed their typing style.Moods tested were joy, fear, anger, sadness, hate, and shame. The result was that the program could identify(识别) a person' s mood correctly 70 per cent of the time. It was most successful in identifying joyfulness with an 87 per cent success ratio, while sadness was the least successful at 60 per cent. The researchers found that the participants were less likely to input (输人) data when they were in a bad mood, which may explain the inexactness of the second result. However, the findings could have great importance for artificial intelligence, and it may allow computers to get along with us i n a friendlier manner, “If we could build any system that is intelligent enough to communicate with humans that is, it can identify user emotions and change its behavior accordingly then using machines could be more effective and friendly.” the researchers wrote.32. At just 21, Elle Fanning made history by becoming the youngest jury(评审团) member at the Cannes Film Festival. This year it lasted from May 14th to May 25th. "I was in complete shock when I got that phone call and that question if I wanted to be a member of the Cannes Jury," Fanning said during a press conference. As it turned out, it not only shocked the US actress, but also brought criticism from those who believed Fanning was too young compared to other veterans in the industry. But Fanning's acting experience was in fact a good argument for her jury membership. In fact, Fanning has been a Hollywood fixture for longer than you realize. The 21yearold has been in many big productions. She began acting in I Am Sam at age 2. With lead roles in movies like Super 8, We Bought a Zoo and Maleficent under her belt (取得成功), she's appeared in 60 projects and is one of Hollywood's hottest young stars. There are the times when you have to avoid cups of coffee that could spill (溅) on you. The smells of some passengers' food are very strong, too. According to theBeijing subway passenger regulations, which went into effect on May 15th, passengers except babies and the sick are no longer allowed to eat or drink on the subway. Violators (违反者) who do not stop after being asked to will be asked to get off. The violation will also be recorded in the violators' credit record. Some support the rule. The reason is that the smell of food and drink can annoy other passengers. "The smell of food fills the carriage, causing people discomfort, especially in the hot summer. Besides, eating on the subway produces rubbish. And on subway trains, people often spill their drinks," said Zheng Yiou, 17, a student from Hefei. However, others question this rule. "Some citizens live so far from their work places that they have limited time to have breakfast before they go to work. Eating while they travel saves them time and decreases the chance that they will be late for work," He Songlin, a 17yearold student from Chengdu said, "And some people, like those with low blood sugar levels, get sick if they can't eat when they must."Other Chinese cities like Nanjing and Chengdu have similar regulations. Some foreign cities also ban eating and drinking on the subway. For example, eating and drinking have long been banned on the subway in Washington DC. Singapore fines people who eat or drink on the subway up to 500 Singaporedollars, which is RMB 2,417 yuan.Chen Yanyan, a professor from Beijing University of Technology, believed we should consider the need of some people to eat or drink on the subway. "Commuters (上班族) and travelers are sometimes too busy to eat. Maybe we could learn from Tokyo, where there are many subway stations equipped with services, allowing passengers to eat and drink," she said.1.(1) In which city was subway passenger regulationscarried out on May 15th?A . Forexample, the Tang Dynasty poet Zhang Ruoxu once wrote that "Generations have come and passed away; From year to year the moons took alike, old and new."However, a new study published in the journal Nature Geoscience shows that the moon is in fact slowly shrinking over time. For the study, a group of US scientists examined and analyzed thousands of photographs taken by the NASA orbiter Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter Camera (月球勘测轨道飞行器照相机) . They found that there were lots of faults (断层) on the surface of the moon. These faults were formed by recent movement on the moon.According to NASA, the moon is made up of pieces of rocks with a hot core (核) .The moon continued to expand as it was born. But in this process, it released energy and cooled down. Then it began to shrink, in a way comparable to the shrinking of a grape into a raisin (葡萄干) . Over the past several hundred million years, it has become 46 meters "skinnier". But due to its hard and rocky crust (外壳) . the moon's surface continues to push up, "Some of these quakes can be fairly strong around five on the Richter scale (里氏震级) ," said Thomas Watters, a senior scientist at the Smithsonian's National Air and Space Museum in the US.But does that mean the moon is a dangerous place thathuman shouldn't try to explore and live on in the future? Maybe not, reported the Telegraph, "This isn't anything to worry about. The moon may be shrinking, but not by much. It's not going anywhere," Watters comforted us.The new discovery proves that the idea that the moon is a dead, boring place is wrong. "We have been to the moon and we've done some great science, but there is still a lot we don't know. The moon is shrinking we didn't really realize that until recently. It's a much more active and interesting place than we thought and we should explore that," NASA scientist Nathan Williams said.1.(1) Which point of view about the moon may the writeragree to?A . It stays the same as before.B . It is becoming lightly smaller.C . It is getting older and older.D . It has passed away.2.(2) What can we learn about the moon from the thirdparagraph?A . It has become 46 meters fatter due to expanding.B . It has changed from a grape into a raisin in recent years.C . It quakes even at seven on the Richter scale.D . It has a hot core and releases energy during expanding.3.(3) Who thinks that we needn't worry about the moon?A . Zhang Ruoxu.B . Thomas Watters.C . Nathan Williams.D .The journalist.4.(4) What does Nathan Williams think of the moon?A . It is a dead and boring place.B . It has lots of faults on the surface.C . It is valuable to do more science.D . It isn't a place where we can live.二、任务型阅读(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)5. 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

These works were displayed in Pingyao, an ancient city in Shanxi Province, under the title Beijing Midsummer Night Dream in September 2010.The moon doors serve as a keyhole through which one can catch a glimpse of a slice of Beijing life. He got his inspiration from one cycling trip to the southeastern suburb of Beijing, where he discovereda peculiar street along which a gray brick wall was built to cover the shabby bungalows. These cabins were mostly rented by migrant workers- peddlers, craftsmen, grocers and innkeepers.Born in 1950, Bartolome has worked as a photographer, stage director. Artistic manager, writer and diplomat. A noted Sinophile, Bartolome frequently visits China for photographic subjects. Now researchers who raised 19 of the geese—named for the black stripes on the backs of their heads—have shown the birds really fly so high. The team trained the youngsters to fly in a large wind tunnel wearing backpacks and face masks full of sensors that recorded their heart rate. blood oxygen levels, temperature, and metabolic rate—how many calories they burned per hour. The researchers simulated(模拟)10w-, medium-, and high-altitudeconditions by altering the concentration of oxygen supplied to face masks worn by each goose as it flew in the tunnel.Birds already have a better heart and lungs than mammals for sustained physical activity. And researchers knew that bar-headed geese have even larger, thinner lungs that let them breathe more deeply and an even bigger heart to pump more oxygen to muscles than other birds. The wind tunnel experiments showed that when the concentration of oxygen was at its lowest-like the 7% found on top of Mount Everest versus 21% at sea level—the geese's heart rate and frequency of wing beats remained the same even as their metabolic rate dropped. Somehow, the birds managed to cool down their blood-the measured blood temperature dropped so it could take in more oxygen, the researchers report today in eLife. This cooling likely helps compensate for the very thin air, the team says.Although well trained, the birds were only willing to stay in the air a few minutes-or less when wearing their backpacks and flying at 6ihigh" altitudes. So it's not clear whether these adaptations alone are what make it possible to fly the 8 hours it takes to climb over Mount Everest. But those few minutes showed these geese really could fly over the top of Mount Everest.(1)Why did the researchers raise 19 bar-headed geese and train them?A. To test the flying height and speed of them.B. To confirm they could fly over Mount Everest.C. To observe them flying through the wind tunnel.D. To see how many calories they burned per hour.(2)What can we learn from the wind tunnel experiment?A. It was carried out at very high altitude.B. The geese managed to breathe less when their blood decreased.C. The geese could live through the lowest concentration of oxygen.D. It shows the geese could fly at high altitude for long.(3)What still puzzles scientists about the geese?A. Whether they have super hearts and lungs.B. Whether they have muscles pumped more oxygen to.C. Whether they are willing to wear backpacks and face masks.D. Whether they can manage to fly 8 hours to climb over Mount Everest.(4)Where does the text most probably come from?A. A science fiction.B. A climbing guide.C. A travel brochure.D. A science report.14.阅读理解Water is a necessity of life. Rain, especially, helps plants grow and stay green. But too much rain, especially in cities, can lead to flooding. That can cause waste water systems to overflow and send pollutants into rivers and other waterways. To fight the problem, several cities in the United States are starting programs like rooftop gardens.A team at the University of the District of Columbia in the nation's capital has created a garden on the top of one school building. The garden holds many kinds of plants to help absorb rainwater andgrow food at the same time. Architect David Bell has designed five "green roofs" for the university. He says he is excited about the project because "it meant doing something more than just dealing with storm water management. It took advantage of a resource above the city and these flat roofs that aren't doing anything really became something that was about urban agriculture." Rainwater is collected in large containers and sent through a system that waters the rooftop garden. The roof is filled with green life that appeals to insects. In cities, "you don't have that many spaces to choose from and so rooftops are just (unused) space," says Caitlin Arlotta. She is a student in the school's Urban Agriculture program. The project is part of a research program to see which plants do well on rooftops. The researchers are looking at plants including strawberries, tomatoes and sweet potatoes. The university also has other green spaces. "We also have our own farm experiments," Arlotta said. "Within each of those growing systems, we want to be able to tell people which sorts of these crops grow the best."Sandy Farber Bandier helps run UDC's Master Gardener program. It seeks to improve cities and make them beautiful by training people to become Master Gardeners. She says she's been surprised by the garden's output. "My biggest surprise was that we produced 4, 250 pounds of produce the first year and was able to spread that to people in need." She also likes being able to show people who live in D. C. and others beyond the nation's capital what and how food can be grown on a rooftop. "This is the future for food. You grow it here, you prepare it in a commercial kitchen, you distribute through farmers markets, food trucks, and then you recycle."(1)What do we know about the rooftop gardens?A. Rooftop gardens are very common in average neighborhoods.B. There are many sorts of plants there which help take in rainwater.C. They're playing an important role in the city's food supply.D. Rooftop gardens are no more than containers to collect rainwater.(2)What can we infer from Paragraph 3?A. Rooftops can offer enough space to plant crops.B. Many plants like strawberries can grow well on rooftops.C. Some university students are participating in the Urban Agriculture program.D. The plants in rooftop gardens are attractive to many insects.(3)How does Sandy Farber Bandier feel about the future of rooftop gardens?A. Confident.B. Doubtful.C. Worried.D. Ambiguous.
