Qingdao (35°35’N—37°09’N, 119°30’E—121°00’E) is located on the west coast of the Pacific Ocean and at the southern tip of the Shandong Peninsula, China. The city is bordered on the south and east by the Yellow Sea and on the north and west by the inland. With a resident population of 9.046 million, Qingdao covers 11,282 square kilometers of land and 12,240 square kilometers of sea. It has six districts—Shinan, Shibei, Licang, Laoshan, Huangdao and Chengyang, and four county-level cities—Jimo, Jiaozhou, Pingdu and Laixi.Qingdao has rich historic and cultural heritage. It is one of the cradles of Chinese Taoism. Human settlement dates back to 5,000—6,000 years ago, which has left us with the rich and colourful Neolithic culture. There’re two national historical streets and 144 cultural heritage sites under national, provincial or municipal protection in the city. It has been awarded Cultural City of East Asia. Qingdao is home to a group of enterprises and brands with international reputation, such as Haier, Hisense, Double Star, Aucma, Tsingtao Beer and CSR Sifang Co., Ltd. Now the cityboasts 91 China Famous Trademarks. The Port of Qingdao has built trade relationship with more than 700 ports worldwide. In 2014, the port handled 480 million tons of cargo and 16.58 million TEUs. Its throughput of imported crude oil ranked the 1st in China. Qingdao’s Airport runs 121 international and domestic routes. In 2014, the airport handled 16.412 million passengers, and 204,400 tons of cargo and mail.Qingdao is a popular tourist destination in China. It has a winding coastline of 863 kilometers, dotted with 49 bays and 69 islets. Qingdao has a typical temperate monsoon climate and is therefore an ideal place for holiday-making, sightseeing and business. The cityscape features “green trees, red roofs, blue sea and azure sky”. The Badaguan (Eight Great Passes) Villa Area is renowned as a “Museum of World Architecture Masterpieces”. Laoshan Mountain has the fame of being “No. 1 Mountain on the Sea”. There are more than 100 exhibitions and conventions every year,including Qingdao International Beer Festival and China International Consumer Electronics Show. Last year, the city received 68.439 million travelers. The World Leisure Games will be held from September 12th to 21st, 2015.Qingdao is an important Olympic city and China’s Sailing City. The city hosted the sailing events for the 29th Beijing Olympic Games and the 13th Paralympic Games in 2008. Afterwards, the Volvo Ocean Race, Clipper Round the World Yacht Race and ISAF Sailing World Cup were also held here in succession. Meanwhile, the International Sailing Week is an annual event in August.Qingdao is China’s leading city for marine science and technology, and blue economy as well. Several innovation platforms, such as the Ocean University of China, National Laboratory for Marine Science and Technology, and National Deep Sea Center are based in Qingdao. The city is home to 30% of China’s marine research institutions, 50% ofhigh-caliber researchers as well as 70% of academicians in marine science and technology.
