Film Review:Brave HeartThe movie named Brave Heart was first released on May 24, 1995 , in the United States. This movie is directed by the famous director Mel Gibson who was the starring actor in the film. The film starring were Mel Gibson, Sophie Marceau, Patrick McGoohan.This movie tells the story about a national hero--William Wallace and the national uprising under his leadership in the late 13th century. In the real history, by the end of March 1296, king Edward I rate army capture Scotland business town Berwick. At the end of April, the England troops in Dunbar annihilated Barry ORR’s forty thousand army. Barry ORR surrendered, as well as more than two thousand Scottish nobles were imprisoned. After that, Scotland was ruled by Edward I(called “Longshanks” in the film), so Scottish people started to fight for their national independence, they fight for their freedom.Director Mel Gibson is not filming history here. The film is not about the whole historical events, it’s adapted from history (1296-1305). The film mainly mentioned Stirling campaign and Falkirk campaign. In fact, Stirling battle occurs in September 11, 1297, the first battle in the film. On this day, the farmer soldiers with rotten equipment, bad training, extremely beat the arrogant royal army. But in Falkirk campaign, in July 22,1298, Edward I led the army personally, William Wallace’s forces was defeated like they in the film. In August 1305, William Wallace was arrested by an Anglomania Scottish nobles John. On August 23, Wallace was cruel executed outside in the iron field of London.William Wallace is the main character,a national hero in the film. That because the princess admire his wisdom and courage and fell in love with him. But good luck is not always come with Wallace. After the Falkirk campaign, Wallace began to take hidden guerrilla tactics against the British. Then his noble Bruce’s father betrayed him. At the end of the film, the noble Robert Bruce led Wallace’s troops continue fighting against English, and won their freedom finally. Thestory present us the great cost of freedom.Generally speaking, Braveheart is a full throated, red-blooded battle epic about William Wallace, the legendary Scots warrior who led his nation into battle against the English in the years around 1300. It's an ambitious film, big on simple emotions like love, patriotism and treachery, and avoids the travelogue style of so many historical swashbucklers: Its locations look green, wet, vast, muddy and rugged.The top 1 thing I have to say is the film’s music. Several years ago I was deeply shocked by the great courage for a nation’s freedom, the same as I’m today. Every time I heard the music, the sad sound rising and falling, my eyes are always wet. It made me thinking about our people’s fighting history, heavy and sad.The film’s dialogue was also wonderful, made me think ing about life, love and freedom more deeply. Freedom, Wallace is precisely fighting for perfect freedom. He mentioned two times that said “I want to farm, to get married, lives well - -, if I may.” To finally this, he has not realized h is dream.To avoid the “the right of first love”, Wallace and Mellone has a secret marriage. But because Mellone revolts against England soldier’s indecently, she is lacerated in her throat. Then Wallace come to anger and begin to fight for freedom.Wallace lead the villagers resist many attacks from England royal family. Wallace win many big wars, England royal family mount the last attack, at the beginning of the war, Wallace said the troops under his command: “Aye, fight and you may die. Young Wallace’s father and brother died in the battle against the English and his uncle took him to the European Continent to receive schooling.When he returns to the hometown,Wallace has grown up into a brave,handsome and well-educated young man.Wallace joined his fellow townsmen to celebrate a new couple’s wedding,where he has a reunion with his childhood pal Hamish;they hurl rocks at each other for entertainment,and the tow become friends and comrade in arms in the later battle.Most of all,he meets his childhood sweetheart Murron,and marries her in secret so the local English won’t claim his right of“prima notta”.Indeed,under the medieval concept of “prima notta”or“first night”,nobles were allowed the first chance to sleep with the wives of their lesser.Scotsmen,make up their main to fight for their independence from the English.They need a true leader,Wallace,the son of a hero,brave and wise,is a true person.But he only wants to be a comment farmer,to lead his own life.He doesn’t see the true face of Longshanks until he witnesses his wife humiliated and killed by English soldiers.It makes his blood boil.Now I want to mention another soul in the film,the princess,played by the French actress Sophie Marceau.The marriage between her and Edward’s son,the Prince of Wales,is only for political reasons.She does not much admire her husband,an effete fop who spends most of his time hanging about moon–eyed with his best friend.Edward I, smarting from defeat,dispatches the princess to offer his terms to Wallace.If Wallace hasher killed or taken hostage,the French king will be angered and back up the English;if Wallace lets her return,with or without an agreement to negotiate,Edward I has already gained time to assemble troops to put down Wallace’s rebellion.But it’s impossible for everything to turn out as he wishes.The princess is soon spilling all the state secrets to Wallace,“because of the way you look at me.”She becomes the second love in Wallace’s life.The tow romances,together with those spectacular battle scenes,expertly directed by the magnetic star,help compensate for the film’s uneven script and over length.It is sometimes seen as an egotistical gesture when actors direct themselves, especially in heroic epics costing$53million.The truth is,given this material,few could have directed it better.And as Brave Heart,Gibson plays his role with flamboyance,and cut it with sly humor.He is an amazing battlefield strategist,inventing new strategies and weapons,outsmarting the English at every turn,leading his men into battle with his face painted blue,like a football fan.There is a scene where he is so pumped up with the scent of the battle that his nostrils flare;not many actors could get away with that,but Gibson can.We will remember Wallace as a Scots Spartacus but wearing a kilt.A powerful, passionate film about a powerful,passionate man!。
