Don’t they have the right to a home? Of course they do. Some regular travelers take their own belongings: like bed sheets, pillowcases and family photos to make them feel like home no matter where they are; some stay for long periods in the same hotel and as a result become very familiar with service and attendants; others may simply put some flowers by the hotel window to make things more homely. Furthermore, driving a camping car during one’s travels and sleeping in the veh icle at night is just like home -- only mobile!

You're shut down and frightened, the world seems hostile; when you love what is, everything in the world becomes the beloved. Inside and outside always match -- they're reflections of each other. The world is the mirror image of your mind.

Not believing your own thoughts, you're free from the primal desire: the thought that reality should be different than it is. You realize the wordless, the unthinkable. You understand that any mystery is only what you yourself have created. In fact, there's no mystery. Everything is as clear as day. It's simple, because there really isn't anything. There's only the story appearing now. And not even that.

No one can be a great thinker who does not realize that as a thinker it is her first duty to follow her intellect to whatever conclusions it may lead. Truth gains more even by the errors of one who with due study and preparation, thinks for himself, than by the true opinions of those who only hold them because they do not suffer themselves to think. No that it is solely, of chiefly, to form great thinkers that freedom of thinking is required. One the contrary, it is as much or even more indispensable to enable average human beings to attain the mental stature which they are capable of. There have been and many again be great individual thinkers in a general atmosphere of mental slavery. But there never has been, nor ever will be, in that atmosphere an intellectually active people. Where any of heterodox speculation was for a time suspended, where there is a tacit convention that principles are not to be disputed: where the discussion of the greatest questions which can occupy humanity is considered to be closed, we cannot hope to find that generally high scale of mental activity which has made some periods of history so remarkable. Never when controversy avoided the subjects which are large and important enough to kindle enthusiasm was the mind of a people stirred up from its foundation and the impulse given which raised even persons of the most ordinary intellect to something of the dignity of thinking beings. She who knows only her own side of the case knows little of that. Her reasons may be food, and no one may have been able to refute them. But if she s equally unable to refute the reasons of the opposite side; if she does not so much as know what they are, she has no ground for preferring either opinion. The rational position for her would be suspension of judgment, and unless she contents herself with that, she is either led by authority, or adopts, like the generality of the world the side to which she feels the most inclination. Nor is it enough that she should heat the arguments of adversaries from her own teachers, presented as they state them, and accompanied by what they offer as refutations, That is not the way to do justice to the arguments, or bring them into real contact with her own mind. She must be able to hear them form persons who actually believe them; who defend them in earnest, and do their very utmost for them. She must know them in their most plausible and persuasive form; she must feel the whole force of the difficulty which the true view of the subject has to encounter and dispose of; else she will never really possess herself of the portion of truth which meets and removes that difficulty. Ninety-nine in a hundred of what are called educated persons are in this condition; even of those who can argue fluently for their opinions. Their conclusion may be true, but it might be false for anything they know; they have never thrown themselves into the mental position of those who thinkdifferently form them and considered what such persons may have to say; and consequently they do not, in any proper sense of the word, know the doctrines which they themselves profess.【篇二】2020年12月大学英语四级阅读美文Greece, economically, is in the black. With very little to export other than such farm products as tobacco, cotton and fruit, the country earns enough from ' invisible earnings' to pay for its needed, growing imports. From the sending out of things the Greeks, earn only $285 million; from tourism, shipping and the remittances of Greeks abroad, the country takes in an additional #375 million and this washes out the almost $400 million by which imports exceed exports. It has a balanced budget. Although more than one drachma out of four goes for defense, the government ended a recent year with a slight surplus -- $66 million. Greece has a decent reserve of almost a third of a billion dollars in gold and foreign exchange. It has a government not dependent on coalescing incompatible parties to obtain parliamentary majorities. In thus summarizing a few happy highlights, I don't mean to minimize the vast extent of Greece's problems. It is the poorest country by a wide margin in Free Europe, and poverty is widespread. At best an annual income of $60 to $70 is the lot of many a peasant, and substantial unemployment plagues the countryside, cities, and towns of Greece. There are few natural resources on which to build any substantial industrial base. Some years ago I wrote here:"Greek statesmanship will have to create an atmosphere in which home and foreign savings will willingly seek investment opportunities in the back ward economy of Greece. So far, most American and other foreign attempt have bogged down in the Greek government's red tape and shrewdness about small points."Great strides have been made. As far back as 1956, expanding tourism seemed a logical way to bring needed foreign currencies and additional jobs to Greece. At that time I talked with the Hilton Hotel people, who had been examining hotel possibilities, and to the Greek government division responsible for this area of the economy. They were hopelessly deadlocked in almost total differences of opinion and outlook.Today most of the incredibly varied, beautiful, historical sights of Greece have new, if in many cases modest, tourist facilities. Tourism itself has jumped from approximately $31 million to over $90 million. There is both a magnificent new Hilton Hotel in Athens and a completely modernized, greatly expanded Grande Bretagne, as well as other first-rate new hotels. And the advent of jets has made Athens as accessible as Paris or Rome – without the sky-high prices of traffic-choked streets of either.【篇三】2020年12月大学英语四级阅读美文Biologically, there is only one quality which distinguishes us from animals: the ability to laugh. In a universe which appears to be utterly devoid of humor, we enjoy this supreme luxury. And it is a luxury, for unlike any other bodily process, laughter does not seem to serve a biologically useful purpose. In a divide world, laughter is a unifying force. Human beings oppose each other on a great many issues. Nations may disagree about systems of government and human relations may be plagued by ideological factions and political camps, but we all share the ability to laugh. And laughter, in turn, depends on that most complex and subtle of all human qualities: a sense of humor Certain comic stereotypes have a universal appeal. This can best be seen from the world-wide popularity of Charlie Chaplin's early films. The little man at odds with society never fails to amuse no matter which country we come from. As that great commentator on human affairs, Dr. Samuel Johnson, once remarked, ' Men have been wise in very different modes; but they have always laughed in the same way.'A sense of humor may take various forms and laughter may be anything from a refined tingle to an earth quaking roar, but the effect is always the same. Humor helps us to maintain a correct sense of values. It is the one quality which political fanatics appear to lack. If we can see the funny side, we never make the mistake of taking ourselves too seriously. We are always reminded that tragedy is not really far removed from comedy, so we never get a lop–sided view of things. This is one of the chief functions of satire and irony. Human pain and suffering are so grim; we hover so often on the brink of war; political realities are usually enough to plunge us into total despair. In such circumstances, cartoons and satirical accounts of somber political events redress the balance. They take the wind out of pompous and arrogant politicians who have lost their sense of proportion. They enable us to see that many of our most profound actions are merely comic or absurd. We laugh when a great satirist like Swift writes about war in Gulliver's Travels. The Lilliputians and their neighbors attack each other because they can't agree which end to break an egg. We laugh because we meant tolaugh; but we are meant to weep too. It is too powerful a weapon to be allowed to flourish. The sense of humor must be singled out as man's most important quality because it is associated with laughter. And laughter, in turn, is associated with happiness. Courage, determination, initiative – these are qualities we share with other forms of life. But the sense of humor is uniquely human. If happiness is one of the great goals of life, then it is the sense of humor that provides the key.。

It is true that most of us value honesty highly. However, nowadays we often confront confidence crisis such as cheating, overcharging, fake modities and so on. I think that we should be honest because being honest is not only beneficial to ourselves but also to others and the whole society. The reasons can be listed as follows.Firstly, only honest people can be truly respected by the others and can make more friends over a long period of time.Secondly, honesty, which is the traditional virtue of the Chinese people, can make our life easier and more harmonious. Thirdly, honesty can make our society more stable. A case in point is that Singapore, a society featuring trustworthiness and integrity, has a paratively low criminal rate.Responsbility can be understood in many ways. for the parents , they have had the responsibility for caring for and fostering their children since the birth of their baby.forteachers, both in kindergartens and colleges, they also should be responsible for the study and life of their students, that is to say, teahers are the second parents of children somewhile.for us,as a friend of others,it is our responsibility to help our friends when they are in trouble or faced with difficulties. each one has the different responsibily based on their roles but we must take it for granted that we are responsible for the society.Honesty Is GoldHonesty means speakingthe truth and being fair and upright in act. He who lies and cheats is dishonest.: Those who gain fortunes not by hard labour but by other means is dishonest.Honesty is a good virtue. If you are honest all the time, you’ll be trusted and respected by others. A liar is always looked down upon and regarded as a black sheep by the people around. Once you lie, people will never believe you even if you speak the truth. However, in the tide of modity economy today, it seems that more and more people believe in money at the sacrifice of honesty. To them, among such things as health, beauty, m6ney, intelligence, honesty, reputation and talent, honesty is the only thing that can be east away. They don’t understand or pretend not to understand that honesty is the biggest fortune humans own, and that it is the prerequisite for doing everything well. I think these people areto be pitied. In short, honesty is gold. Honest, your reputation will bee great;dishonest, your name will be spoiled and your personality degraded. Therefore, we should never make such an excuse as "A little dishonesty is only a trifle thing. We should eradicate immediately the seed of dishonesty once it is sowed in our minds.Almost all of us heard the story “Here Comes the Wolf”when we were little kids. What we can learn from the story is that we must be honest. However, there’re lots of phenomena of dishonesty nowadays。

1The love of beauty is an essential part of all healthy human nature. It is a moral quality. The absence of it is not an assured ground of condemnation, but the presence of it is an invariable sign of goodness of heart. In proportion to the degree in which it is felt will probably be the degree in which nobleness and beauty of character will be attained.Natural beauty is an all-pervading presence. The universe is its temple. It unfolds into the numberless flowers of spring. It waves in the branches of trees and the green blades of grass. It haunts the depths of the earth and the sea. It gleams from the hues of the shell and the precious stone. And not only these minute objects but the oceans, the mountains, the clouds, the stars, the rising and the setting sun—all overflow with beauty. This beauty is so precious, and so congenial to our tenderest and noblest feelings, that it is painful to think of the multitude of people living in the midst of it and yet remaining almost blind to it.All persons should seek to become acquainted with the beauty in nature. There is not a worm we tread upon, nor a leaf that dances merrily as it falls before the autumn winds, but calls for our study and admiration. The power to appreciate beauty not merely increases oursources of happiness - it enlarges our moral nature, too. Beauty calms our restlessness and dispels our cares. Go into the fields or the woods, spend a summer day by the sea or the mountains, and all your little perplexities and anxieties will vanish. Listen to sweet music, and your foolish fears and petty jealousies will pass away. The beauty of the world helps us to seek and find the beauty of goodness. 2National Teacher Day is always the Tuesday of the first full week of May. 2020英文作文

2020 has been a challenging year for everyone. The COVID-19 pandemic has affected our lives in many ways. From lockdowns to social distancing, we have had to adapt to a new way of living. However, in the midst of all this chaos, there have been some positive changes as well. One of the biggest changes I have noticed is the way we communicate. With most of us working from home, virtual communication has become the norm. We are now using video conferencing apps like Zoom and Skype to connect with colleagues, friends, and family. While it may not be the same as meeting in person, it has allowed us to stay connected and continue to work and socialize.Another change I have noticed is the way we appreciate the little things in life. With so much uncertainty and fear, we have learned to appreciate the simple things thatwe may have taken for granted before. For example, goingfor a walk in the park, having a home-cooked meal, or spending time with loved ones has become more meaningful. However, there have also been some negative changes. The pandemic has led to an increase in stress, anxiety, and mental health issues. With so much uncertainty about the future, it is easy to feel overwhelmed and helpless. It is important to prioritize self-care and seek help if needed.Overall, 2020 has been a year of change and growth. While it has been challenging, it has also taught us to be resilient and adaptable. As we move forward, we must continue to support each other and stay positive.

1I recently started a new job, in a small office, where four of us share a fridge. In that fridge is a Brita water filter pitcher. One of my coworkers plained the water tasted “dirty". It went on for a few days, and she was stunned I could drink the water without any trouble. I started to doubt my taste buds, but the water really tasted fine.最近我找了份新工作,是在一间小办公室里,我们四个人共用一个冰箱。

冰箱里有一个Brita牌滤水壶,有一个同事抱怨说水喝起来感觉很“脏”,她连续抱怨了几天,还很震惊我喝这样的水竟然没事。

我开始怀疑自己的味蕾出问题了,但我真觉着水喝着还不错。

Finally, she figured out the problem was actually her cup. She simply forgot to clean it, and after awhile started to affect the water inside it. She cleaned her cup, and drank the water with no problem.

I can't help but think about the world we live in. Too often we quickly blame other people, other things, anything else but ourselves. "You're racist". "You're intolerant". "You're the problem". The world isn't perfect, I know, but I think we should take a step back sometimes and ask ourselves some tough questions.

Baby proof this house, stated our oldest son Mark as he lumbered up the stairs followed by his wife, Kim, and fifteen-month-old Hannah. Visiting for the Thanksgiving holiday, he finished unloading the luggage and took it to the guestroom downstairs. After driving all day from Salt Lake to Ft. Collins, his temper showed. That one finger rule may work with the twins, but itll never work with Hannah, he insisted. When my three granddaughters were born four months apart and the twins moved into our house at eight months, my close friend offered me her secret to entertaining grandchildren with few mishaps. Teach them the one finger rule. All of her five grandchildren learned it at a young age. The success of the method surprised me.I picked up my granddaughter and said, Well, Mark, you just watch. I hugged her and walked all around the great room.Hannah, you may touch anything in this room you want. But, you can only use one finger. I demonstrated the technique bytouching my forefinger to the African sculpture on the mantle. Hannah followed my example. Good girl. Now what else would you like to touch? She stretched her finger toward another object on the mantle.I allowed her to touch everything in sight, plants, glass objects, TV, VCR, lamps, speakers, candles and artificial flowers. If she started to grab, I gently reminded her to use one finger. She always obeyed. But, Hannah, an only child, possessed a more adventur ous personality. Her father predicted it would prevent her from accepting theone fingerrule.During their four-day stay, we aided Hannah in rememberingone fingerrule. She learned quickly. I only put away the things that might prove to be a danger to a child. Otherwise, we watched her closely and nothing appeared to suffer any damage. Besides, thingscan be replaced.A few fingerprints on glass doors, windows and tables remained after Hannah and her family returned home. I couldnt bring myself to clean them for days. Each one reminded me of some wonderful experience with Hannah.Months later, my husband and I drove to Salt Lake; I watched Mark and Kim continue to practice the one finger rule. But I refrained from saying, I told you so. Yet, I smiled inwardlyeach time they prodded Hannah to touch with one finger. Mark, a salesman, always gave a packet of gifts to his potential clients. The night before we returned home, Mark sat on the floor stuffing gifts into their packets. Hannah helped. Then she picked up one gift, held it in her hand as if it were a fragile bird, and walked toward me. At my knee, her beautiful blue eyes looked into mine. She stretched her prize to me and said, One finger, Nana! 2Autumn dusk, floating patches of dead leaves. The air was filled with the sounds of car horns, laughter, and the occasional street performer playing a lively tune on their guitar. It was a vibrant and lively scene, full of energy and excitement.2. As I walked down the crowded sidewalk, I couldn't help but notice the diversity of the people around me. There were individuals from all walks of life, each with their own unique style and personality. Some were dressedin sleek suits, exuding confidence and professionalism, while others wore colorful and eccentric outfits, expressing their creativity and individuality. The aroma of freshly brewed coffee wafted throughthe air, drawing me towards a cozy café nestled in a corner. I stepped inside and was greeted by the comforting smell of roasted beans and the soothing hum of conversation. The baristas behind the counter were skilled artisans, carefully crafting each cup with precision and care. The atmosphere was warm and inviting, a sanctuary from thehustle and bustle of the outside world.4. As I sipped my coffee, I couldn't help but reflecton the power of words. The café was filled with people engrossed in books, newspapers, and laptops, their faces illuminated by the soft glow of screens. It was a reminderof the transformative nature of literature and the written word. In this digital age, where information is at our fingertips, it is easy to forget the magic that lies within the pages of a book. But here, in this café, surrounded by fellow readers, I was reminded of the power of storytelling and the ability of words to transport us to different worlds.5. law from marrying, a person with no access totransportation is effectively excluded from communityand social activities which mightlead to the development of long-term relationships.【篇二】 2020 年上半年大学英语四级听力美文It was once thought that air pollution affected only the areaimmediately around large citieswith factories and/or heavyautomobile traffic.Today, we know that although these are the areas with the worstair pollution, the problem isliterally worldwide. On several occasions over the past decade, a heavy cloud of airpollution has covered theentire eastern half of the United States and led to health warnings even in rural areas awayfrom any major concentration of manufacturing and automobile traffic. In fact, the climate of the entire earth may be affected byair pollution. Some scientists feel that the increasing concentration of carbondioxide in the air resultingfrom the burning of fossil fuels (coal andoil) is creating a “greenhouse effect ” — holding inheat reflected from the earth and raising the world's average temperature. If this view is correct and the world's temperature is raised onlya few degrees, much of thepolar ice cap will melt and cities such asNew York, Boston, Miami, and New Orleans will beunder water.Another view, less widely held, is that increasing particulate matter in the atmosphere isblocking sunlight and lowering the earth'stemperature — a result that would be equallydisastrous.A drop of just a few degrees could create something close to new iceage and would makeagriculture difficult or impossible in many of our top farming areas. At present we do not know for sure that either of these conditionswill happen (though onerecent government report prepared by expertsin the field concluded that the greenhouseeffect is very likely).Perhaps, if we are very lucky, the two tendencies will offset eachother and the world'stemperature will stay about the same as it is now.【篇三】 2020 年上半年大学英语四级听力美文Hearing can soothe and comfort. The snapping of logs in the fireplace, the gossipy whisper of a broom, the inquisitive wheezeof a drawer opening — all are savored sounds that make us feel at home.In a well-loved home, every chair produced a different, recognizable creak, every window adifferent click, groan or squeak. The kitchen by itself is a source of many pleasing sounds.Every place, every event has a sound dimension. The sense of hearing can perhaps be restored to modern manif he better understands itsworth and how it works. Most people would be surprised to discover how far the sense canbe pushed by cultivation. At a friend's house recently, my wife opened her purse and some coins spilled out, one afteranother, onto the floor.“Three quarters, two dimes, a nickel and three pennies,” said our host as he came in from thenext room. And as an afterthought:“One of the quarters is silver.”He was right, down to the last penny.“How did you do it?” we asked.“Try it yourself.” he said.We did, and with a little practice we found it easy.Curiously, evidence indicates that people need sound. When we are lost in thought, we involuntarily drum with our fingersor tap with a pencil — areminder that we are still surrounded by a world outside ourselves.Just cutting down reflected sound can produce some odd results. The nearest thing on earth to the silence of outer space, for example, is the “anechoicchamber ” at the Bell Telephone Laboratories in Burray Hills, N.J., which is lined with materialthat absorbs 99.98% of all reflected sound.Men who have remained in the room for more than an hour reportthat they feel nervous andout of touch with reality.。

Suppose someone gave you a pen — a sealed, solid-colored pen.You couldn’t see how much ink it had.

It might run dry after the first few tentative words or lastjust long enough to create a masterpiece (or several) that would last forever and make a difference in the scheme of things. You don’t know before you begin.

Under the rules of the game, you really never know. You have to take a chance!

Actually, no rule of the game states you must do anything. Instead of picking up and using the pen, you could leave it on a shelf or in a drawer where it will dry up, unused.

27. Scientific TheoriesIn scienee, a theory is a reasonable explanation of observed events that are related. A theory often involves an imaginary model that helps scientists picture the way an observed eve nt could be produced. A good example of this is found in the kinetic molecular theory, in which gases are pictured as being made up of many small particles that are in constant motion.A useful theory, in addition to explaining past observations, helps to predict events that have not as yet been observed. After a theory has been publicized, scientists design experiments to test the theory. If observations confirm the scientists predictions, the theory is supported .If observatio ns do not confirm the predictions, the scientists must search further. There may be a fault in the experiment, or the theory may have to be revised or rejected.Science involves imagination and creative thinking as well as collecting information and performing experiments. Facts by themselves are not scienee. As the mathematician Jules Henri Poincare said, "Science is built with facts just as a house is built with bricks, but a collection of facts cannot be called scienee any more than a pile of bricks can be called a house.”Most scientists start an in vestigation by fin ding out what other scie ntists have lear ned about a particular problem・ After known facts have been gathered, the scientist comes to the part of the investigation that requires considerable imagination. Possible solutions to the problem are formulated. These possible solutions are called hypotheses・In a way, any hypothesis is a leap into the unknown. It extends the scientist's thinking beyond the known facts. The scientist plans experiments, performs calculations, and makes observations to test hypotheses. Without hypothesis, further investigation lacks purpose and directi on. Whe n hypotheses are confirmed, they are in corporated into theories

British Columbia is the third largest Canadian provinces, both in area and population. It is nearly 1.5 times as large as Texas, and extends 800 miles(1,280km) north from the United States border. It includes Canada's entire west coast and the islands just off the coast. Most of British Columbia is mountai no us, with long rugged ranges running n orth and south. Even the coastal islands are the remains of a mountain range that existed thousands of years ago. During the last Ice Age, this range was scoured by glaciers until most of it was ben eath the sea .Its peaks now show as isla nds scattered along the coast. The southwestern coastal region has a humid mild marine climate. Sea winds that blow inland from the west are warmed by a current of warm water that flows through the Pacific Ocean. As a result, winter temperatures average above freezing and summers are mild. These warm western winds also carry moisture from the ocean.Inland from the coast, the winds from the Pacific meet the mountain barriers of the coastal ranges and the Rocky Mountains. As they rise to cross the mountains, the winds are cooled, and their moisture begins to fall as rain. On some of the western slopes almost 200 inches (500cm) of rain fall each year.More than half of British Columbia is heavily forested. On mountain slopes that receive plentiful rain fall, huge Douglas firs rise in towering columns. These forest giants often grow to be as much as 300 feet(90m) tall, with diameters up to 10 feet(3m). More lumber is produced from these trees than from any other kind of tree in North America. Hemlock, red cedar, and balsam fir are among the other trees found in British Columbia.
