Background Information
• American schools highly value the full realization of one‘s potential. They lay emphasis on personal development including basic skills education, understanding of basic processes, intellectual development, critical thinking (to evaluate ideas) and creative thinking (to generate ideas), recreational and aesthetic interests, emotional and physical well-being, and most importantly, character formation. 2. Team Spirit • American education also intends to foster the learner‘s commitment to the country, the neighborhood and the family. Patriotism is taught as the cardinal principle. Interpersonal skills are cultivated to enhance human cooperation and appreciation.
Background Information
• The Goals of American Education
• Since Dead Poets Society is a movie set on campus, a glimpse into American education will definitely enable us to keep track of certain Western cultural notions. American education is an indispensible part of the American Dream. Not only does it determine the individual‘s social status and economic prospects, but it also brings general social benefits such as elimination of poverty and improvement of citizenship. Two of the most prominent features of American educational goals are: 1. Self-actualization

I did not wish to live what was not life, living is so dear; nor did I wish to practise resignation, unless it was quite necessary. I wanted to live deep and suck out all the marrow of life, to live so sturdily and Spartan-like as to put to rout all that was not life, to cut a broad swath and shave close, to drive life into a corner, and reduce it to its lowest terms, and, if it proved to be mean, why then to get the whole and genuine meanness of it, and publish its meanness to the world; or if it were sublime, to know it by experience, and be able to give a true account of it in my next excursion. For most men, it appears to me, are in a strange uncertainty about it, whether it is of the devil or of God, and have somewhat hastily concluded that it is the chief end of man here to “glorify God and enjoy him forever.”--Henry David ThoreauThe Road Not TakenTwo roads diverged in a yellow wood,And sorry I could not travel bothAnd be one traveler, long I stoodAnd looked down one as far as I couldTo where it bent in the undergrowth; Then took the other, as just as fair,And having perhaps the better claim,Because it was grassy and wanted wear;Though as for that the passing thereHad worn them really about the same,And both that morning equally layIn leaves no step had trodden black.Oh, I kept the first for another day!Yet knowing how way leads on to way,I doubted if I should ever come back.I shall be telling this with a sighSomewhere ages and ages hence:Two roads diverged in a wood, and I--I took the one less traveled by,And that has made all the difference.--Robert FrostFire and IceSome say the world will end in fire,Some say in ice,From what I've tasted of desireI hold with those who favor fire. But if it had to perish twice,I think I know enough of hateTo day that for destruction iceIs also greatAnd would suffice--Robert Frost经典台词:一、14分-19分15秒吹着口哨进来,从后门出去。

To my great surprise, the school wellton is somewhat likes the schools in china nowadays, it attaches most importance on study. Though it is famous for its solemn teaching style and high enrolment rates, students there are deprived of freedom, they are on ly asked to obey the school’s discipline and get high points. That is really a tragedy.I like the teacher Keating very much. After I saw the movie, I could not help asking myself a question——is there anyone who ever changes your life, change the way you look into life and things? I do not know, but I do know some kids in wllton , their life have been changed. They learned to rethink the meaning of living and death, they learned to use their own heart and taste to appreciate poets instead of some fixed rules, they learned to look at things from different perspective. I think most people need a guide (say Keating in the film)when growing up. Luckily some people met , others , not so luckily, did not meet, and they had to learn these precious experience by themselves. That is why I like Keating.I am deeply impressed by the movie, especially the following lines“I went to the woods because I wanted to live deliberately, I wanted to live deep and suck out all the marrow of life, and not when I had come to die, discover that I had not lived.”life is so short and full of miracles, I do not want a blanket and meaningless life either. The movie is one of the most wonderful films I have ever watched. To be honest, I were always thinking that there were few movies or stories that could indeed touch me from the bottom of my heart in the past few years .Now I have realized that there are good ones in theworld .With tears I finished enjoying the last five minutes. Alomst no words can describe my true feeling the moment the boys standing on the desks one by one calling the leaving teacher “oh, captain ,my captain .”in the saddest voice. The only thing I know is that I really like it . Yes ,the respectful teacher is their captain in their whole life .He makes thestudents know what life is .He interests them in the poets, but in fact in life . It helps me to see and understand the precious feelings between human beings better .I even have cried for a long time ,thinking of the things in the teacher’s eyes .He did not want to leave his students but he had to for his different teachig method against the traditional education system. This story talks about a famous school, a group of rich students, a great teacher and the dead poets society. A sad one that can move anyone and cause one to think of our life we are leading.Do their parents and the other teachers in the school know what the young want? Do they have an idea what their kids expect to be in the future ? Do they know what the students call this famous school ?Parents find the most students graduated from this school become somebody in their country. They hoped their kids can be like them one day.But in students’mind it’s hell .Yes, it’s the hell on the earth .The same haircut ,the same books ,the same suits, evething is the same .Do they ever think the young are not boys ,not yet men ,and all things they need are time ?It’s unfair for them to take on so much responsibility.I feel sorry for them .They are full of passion for their life but they lead a poor life .They have no right to choose their future .They parents do that for them .You grow to be a banker ,and you grow to be a doctor .They have a lot of money but they are feeling sorry for themselves .The young have done nothing wrong but they have tobe a man what their parents ask them to be .Maybe tne only thing they did is wrong is that to be their parents’s sons .Oh Capitain, my capitain!

He writes two novels: Dead Poets Society in 1989 and The Magnificent Seven in 1996.This is the story of students at the respected "Welton Academy," a preparatory school in V ermont. Such schools were (and often still are) very conservative institutions that serve as high schools for parents who insist on sending their children to the best universities. Welton, like many prep schools, admitted only boys. The movie takes place in 1959.Mr. Keating, a young and exciting English and poetry teacher, who is determined to teach his students to live life with absolute passion. Mr. Keating, using poetry as his vehicle teaches his students to challenge the institutions around them. The energetic man asks his student to call him Mr. Keating or “O Captain My Captain!”It’s written by a poet named Walt Whitman about Abraham Lincoln. The private Welton Academy is a lifeless, completely cut off the world school. The new English teacher Keating’s coming like ant excitant be injected to the students, like a lighting breaking the old school life. Inspired by Mr. Keating's philosophy of life, many of his students recreate the "Dead Poet's Society," a secret club which meets in a cave in order to discuss poetry, philosophy and other topics. The club, which Mr. Keating had created many years earlier when he was a student at Welton, would be completely unacceptable to the conservative school, which discourages students from "thinking for themselves." It’s a social dedicated to sucking the marrow out of life. A small group of the members sitting around reading Shelly, Thoreall, Whitman, their own verse at the old cave. The enchantment of the moment let it work its magic on them. Keating’s eyes glowed when recalling the experience. Keating tells the younger to “Carpe Diem”. This Latin word means holding today. The boys use it to encourage themselves to do what they want to do. They love Keating’s lessons very much. His lessons let him find the romantic and enthusiasm belonged to them. They know what they really want and what they would like to do.Knox Overstreet loves Chris, a beautiful girl. But Chris’s boyfriend Chat’s father is Knox father’s best friend. Knox feels very sad and annoyed. He is charmed by her. He may die if he can not get her love. With the members’ encouragement he writes a love poet to her and then expresses to Chris in her classroom. At the beginning, Chris fears Chat may beat him to death. She refuses him. Under Knox’s insistence, she accepts him gradually. The result is beautiful and happy.Neil Perry, although exceedingly bright and popular, is under the thumb of his overbearing father. His parents have planed the rest of his life for him but never ask him what he wants. He wants to act while his father objects to it. Acting is everything to him, so he insisted on it. At last he gets success in the acting as a clown. He is very happy and his friends and Keating all congratulate him. While his strict father Mr. Perry takes him home and criticizes him. His friends also cannot help him. They pay him homage in the cave. But Neil ends his life with his father’s gun. He is so sad and disappointed. The headmaster Nolan asks the members of Dead Poets Society to signature on a piece of paper. It describes that their teacher Mr. Keating encourages boys to organize the club and use it as a source of inspiration for reckless, self-indulgent behavior. It describes how Keating encourages Neil to follow this obsession of acting when it goes directly against the explicit orders of Neil’s parents. So Nolan says, it is Mr. Keating’s blatant abuse of his position as a teacher that let directly to Neil Perry’s death. And Keating will never teach again. Of course, those words are not true.Todd, a shy boy, has been sent to the school where his popular older brother was valedictorian. With Keating’s encouragement he becomes brave and he also attends the team. He refuses to signature bravely. But he couldn’t save Mr. Keating. Before Keating leaving the school he comes to see his students, Todd stands on the desk and calls Keating. Later all the students stand on the desk in silent salute to Mr. Keating. He leaves with “thanks” and tears. This book criticizes traditional education. It challenges the old thought. It is the symbol of youth and vigor. If this film has entirely different two worlds, one is to be symbolizing the real world binding up and feeling constrained, another is fond dream world having embodied liberty and intense emotion. Then Keating is the contact point of the two worlds. He is the teacher in the true world, but he is also the leader who leading them finds and cherishes their dream.Neil’s death let me exclaimed. He can do such sacrifice for his dream. If we have no dream, the life will have no sense. It just likes the ship having no direction, drifting arbitrarily. Dream is not the extravagant hopes. We can get it by our effort. But it is not the grapes in the tree which we can get by jumping.I suggest every parent and the younger to read it. The parents should change their old, conservative thought. They should listen to their children more. The younger not only need the substantial love but also the consideration in the heart. And the book may help the younger think more about themselves, their dream and give them confidence.。

美国作家THOREAU(1818-1862)的《瓦尔登湖》Walden,or Life in the WoodsI went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived. For most men, it appears to me, are in a strange uncertainty about it, whether it is of the devil or of God, and have somewhat hastily concluded that it is the chief end of man here to "glorify God and enjoy him forever."
