Chinese Architectures and Local Designs

张永和:朱小地先生,您所领导的是世界上最大的设计机构之一,也就是北京设计院,今天有的人说建筑是一个“个人”的事业,现在在您的机构中有三千多位建筑师,您如何看待这个问题?

Zhang Yonghe: Mr. Zhu Xiaodi, the institute—Beijing Institute of Architectural Design you’re l eading is one of the largest around the world. Today, some people say thatarchitecture is a “personal” undertaking, and there are more than 3,000 architects in your institute, how do you view this issue?

朱小地:首先我要说明一下,我们院里面其实只有不到一半是建筑师,是一个综合的专业设计机构。我觉得作为一个设计机构来讲,如果仅仅满足于经济上的成功,是完全不够的,当然今天有很多设计院的领导参加这个论坛,我特别想表明我的态度,一个设计机构不管有多大的规模,只是在经济上获得成功,我觉得是没有什么价值的,或者说这种经济的成功和整个宏观经济的需求之间的差距是会永远存在。所以我觉得设计机构在中国来讲,不仅仅需要经济上的成功,而且应该是在自己的创作性、建筑师的创作能力这方面应该给予高度的重视。

Zhu Xiaodi: First of all, in fact, less than half of our personnel in our institute are architects and our institute is a comprehensive professional design institute. I think, as a design institute, if we are merely content with the economic success, it is not enough at all. Today, a lot of design institute leaders participate in this forum, so I’d like to express my attitude. No matter how big a design institute is,if it is onlyeconomically successful, I think it has little value, or I can say the gap between economic success and the overall macroeconomic demand will exist forever. Therefore, I think the design institutes in China not only need the economic success, but also should highly attach importance to our creativities and architects’ creative abilities.

格伦·马库特先生是采取个人创作的工作方式,我对他的工作方式有一些大概了解,而且他就做他本国的项目,我觉得这样的一个工作方式是代表了建筑师对职业的一个态度,我认为这样的价值观或者价值取向也是我们很多设计机构应该尊重和推崇的。虽然我们有这么多的建筑师,但是工作起来还是一个工作室的模式,比如像张永和先生的非常建筑事务所、王澍的业余建筑事务所、现在崔恺先生也是用工作室的方法进行设计,我们也非常荣幸地跟国外的建筑大师有过合作,我认为这种工作方式是相通的,值得学习和借鉴,也应该成为我们院的工作方式。

Mr. Glenn Murcutt takes the work model of individual creations, I have some general knowledge about his work, and I know he only involves in his domestic projects. I think it represents an architect’s attitude to his profession, and such a sense of worth or value orientation should be respected and praised highly by us. Although we have so many architects, our work model is still a studio model, like Mr. Zhang Yonghe’s Atelier FCJZ, Wang Shu’s Amateur Architectural

Firm, and Mr. Cui Kai also designs in the studio model. We are also honored to have worked with the foreign masters of architecture, I think this work model shares common characteristic, which is worth learning and referring and should become the work model of our institute.

黄艳:请问崔恺先生,很多建筑师说高速的城市化国际化的过程中,最大的问题是千城一面,没有特色,您最近提出本土设计这样一个概念,是怎么考虑的?

Huang Yan: Mr. Cui Kai, many architects say that the biggest problem in the high-speed urbanization process is “thousands of cities are similar, and without distinguishing characteristics”, and you have proposed such a concept of “local design” at present, what’s about it?

崔恺:实际上中国的快速发展确实造成城市的巨大变化,在一个非常短的时期出现大量的建设项目,出现了质量的问题、特色的问题,现在无论是从各个城市的领导者到普通的市民,大家都对建筑这个行业有一些抱怨,认为缺乏城市的特色。目前有两方面的举动在纠正这件事情:一是请国内外著名建筑师做城市的一些重点标志性建筑,以使这个城市具有某种特色;二方希望更多的建筑师关注建筑的地域化,我个人基本上是在第二方面努力。我认为建筑的本土化或者说建筑跟本土文化和环境的结合,是建筑创作的基本出发点,建筑并不是一般的商品,可以被出售给另外一个地方,建筑一定成长于这个土地上,跟土地建立起非常具体的联系,所以我提出本土化或者本土设计是基于这样的一个考虑。当然我们说到这个概念的时候,有些时候要特别的小心,它并不是一种复古,并不是回过头去想一想或者照搬一些以往的建筑风格或形式,而是应该在回顾的立场上去向前看,所以关于地域化和全球化的问题也是这个道理,我们在全球化的语境下考虑地域化的问题,多少带有这样的想法。

Cui Kai: In fact, China’s rapid development ha s indeed brought about great changes to cities, a large number of construction projects have emerged in a very short period with the quality problems and characteristic problems emerging as well. At present, from leaders to ordinary citizens in each city, allare complaining about the architecture industry and the lack of city characteristics. There are currently two measures rectifying this problem: first, we should invite the domestic and international famous architects to design some key landmarks in city, so that the city will possess some characteristics; second, we hope more architects are concerned about the localization of architectures, and I personally make great efforts in the second aspect. I think the localization of architectures or the combination of local cultural environment and architectures is the basic starting point of architectural creation. Architecture is not an ordinary commodity that can be sold to another place, whereas architecture must grow in the land and have very specific connections with the land, so I just proposed the localization or local design based no such a consideration. Of course, when we talk about this concept, we must be particularly careful, because it does not mean restoring ancient ways or copying some past architectural styles or forms, but we should look ahead from a
