the one that you think is the best answer Mark your answer on the Answer Sheet.Passage OneWhen something terrible happens w our friends,we often can't respond properly,We hurt their feelings by saying exactly what they don't want to hear;we stay away when they ;or if we do get in touch,we avoid the sensitive subject altogether. We don't mean to be rude or thoughtless-so why do we act this way when we really want to help? How can we find the right thing to say to a friend in a difficult situation? Here are some suggestions:Keep the focus off yourself. When you are with a friend who has suffered a tragedy, remember that you are there to provide support and comfort.Concentrate on his or her feelings rather than your own.Don't use a friend's tragedy as an excuse to drag out similar experiences you’ve had. There's nothing wrong with saying:I've been through it,I know how you must fee", but you should not say:“When my mother died,I stopped eating for a week."Not everyone experiences grief in the same way,so don't impose guilt on a person who doesn't show emotion as openly as you might.Just listen. Many painful people need to mourn,to go through the normal stages of grief and to talk about their feelings:and memories,So just1isten,accept your friend's feelings and beunderstanding. Some hurting people may not want to say anything.and you have to respect that too.One man says that the best phone calls he got were from a friend who called once a day and talked for no more than a minute, letting him know she was thinking of him.Offer help.An emotionally hurt person may be overwhelmed by the details of everyday life.Offer to do something, finish a project or take the kids to their piano lessons.“When I had a broken back,I felt completely out of control,"says Joan,a divorced woman with a young daughter.“When my neighbors took turns filing in for me in the car pool,it helped me relax. It was the difference between chaos and order."Be patient. The grief and sorrow can range in intensity and duration and often lasts a few years.Let the person know you're concerned. You might say:“What you're going through must be very difficult, and I don't think you have to do it alone.I’d like to help and would be always here with you”.No one can be expected to know what to say or how to act in every difficult situation. But if you begin with common sense and politeness, and focus on being supportive,s0on you will know the right way to respond.51.When we have hurt our friends in trouble by improper response,we______.ually did it on purposeB.would feel regretful for what we had said and doneC.would stay away from themD.should continue get in touch with them52.When you are talking with a hurting friend, the best policy is______.A.to listen patientlyB.to try to comfort him or herC.to tell him or her something entertainingD.to give him or her a phone call53.If a friend's grief seems to be very intense or long-lasting,we should______.A.let it be since someone can't rush griefB.advise him or her to take the kids out for classesC.let the person know we are concerned and always ready to helpD.help him or her relax and make everything in order54.Which of the following statement is true?A.If we follow the suggestions offered in this article,we will know how to behave in every difficult situation.B.Acting politely is always the right way to respond.C.The article offers us the common senses and courses of how to act properly whenour friend is in trouble.D.If we don't talk the sensitive subject,we can avoid hurting our friends.Passage TwoMajor companies are already in pursuit of commercial applications of the new biology. They dream of placing enzymes in the.automobile to monitor exhaust and send data on pollution to a microprocessor that will then adjust the engine. They speak of what the New York Times calls"metal-hungry microbes that might be used to mine valuable trace metals from ocean water".They have already demanded and won the right to patent new life forms.Nervous critics, including many scientists, worry that there is corporate, national, international, and inter-scientific rivalry in the entire biotechnological field. They create images not of oil spills, but of microbe spills"that could spread disease and destroy entire populations. The creation and accidental release of extremely poisonous microbes, however,is only one cause for pletely rational and respectable scientists are talking about possibilities that stagger the imagination.Should we breed people with cow-like stomachs so they can digest grass and hay, thereby relieving the food problem by modifying us to eat lower down on the food chain?Should we biologically alter workers to fit the job requirement, for example, creating pilots with faster reaction times or assembly-line workers designed to do our monotonous work for us?.Should we attempt to eliminate inferior"people and breed a"super race"?(Hitler tried this, but without the genetic weaponry that may soon issue from our laboratories.)Should we produce soldiers to do our fighting?Should we use genetic forecasting to pre-eliminate unfit babies?Should we grow reserve organs for ourselves, each of us having,as it were,a savings bank"full of spare kidney, livers,or hands?Wild as these notions may sound every one has its advocates(and opposers)in the scientific community as well as its striking commercial application. As two critics of genetic engineering,Jeremy Rifkin and Ted Howard, stale in their book Who Should Play God?,"Broad scale genetic engineering will probably be introduced to America much the same way as assemblylines, automobiles, vaccines, computers and all the other technologies.A8each new genetic advance becomes commercially practical,a new consumer need will be exploited and a market for the new technology will be created."55.According to the passage, the exhaust from a car engine could probably be checkedby____ing metal-hungry microbesB.making use of enzymesC.adjusting the engineD.patenting new life forms56.According to the passage, which of the following would worry the critics the most?A.The unanticipated explosion of population.B.The creation of biological solar a war.C.Producing people with cow-like stomachs.ing genetic forecasting to cure diseases58.According to the passage,Hitler attempted to____.A.change the pilots biologically to win the warB.develop genetic farming for food supplyC.kill the people he thought of as inferiorD.encourage the development of genetic weapons for the warPassage ThreeThere was a time in the early history of man when the days had no names! The reason was quite simple:Men had not invented the week.In those days, the only division of times was the month, and there were too many days in the month for each of them to have a separate name. But when men began to build cities they wanted to have,a special day on which10trade,a market day.Sometimes these market days were fixed at every tenth day, sometimes every seventh or every fifth day.The Babylonians decided that it should be every seventh day.On this day they didn't work, but met for trade and religious festivals The Jews followed their example, but kept every seventh day for religious purposes,In this way,the week came into existence. It was the space between market days. The Jews gave each ofthe seven days a name, but it was really a number after the Sabbath day(which was Saturday),For example,Wednesday was called the fourth day(four days after Saturday),When the Egyptians adopted the seven-day week, they named the days after five planets the sun and the moon. The Romans used the Egyptian names for their days of the week:the day of the sun,of the moon,of the planet Mars,of Mercury,of Jupiter,of Venus, and of Saturn. While we get our names for the days not from the Romans but from the Anglo-Saxons,who called most of the days after their own gods, which were roughly the same as the gods of the Romans,A day,by the way, used to be counted as the space between sunrise and sunset. The Romans counted it as from midnight, and most modern nations use this method.59.In the early times there were no names for the days, because men____"A.had not yet created the idea of grouping seven days in a weekB.did not know how to spell"week"C.considered unnecessary to have the namesD.did not believe it was the time to invent the week60.Which of the following is true for those earlier times?A.It became necessary for each day to have a separate name when men began to buildcities.B.There were so many days in the month that it was impossible for each day to haveits own name.C.At that time the day that got a name was called a market day.D.The Babylonians decided people must work on a market day.61.In this context, the word week"means____.A.any market dayB.the Sabbath DayC.the days between those for religious purposesD.the day for trade and religious festivals62.Our present names for the days of the week are____.A.quite different from the old timesB.mostly named after the gods of the Anglo-SaxonsC.more or less the same us those the Egyptians are usinged to count the number of days in a weekSection B Sentence Understanding and Nobody wants to talk to you if you can't talk back. Can anything be done to help these children?Yes.They can go to see a speech therapist--a person who's specially trained to work out what's wrong and who knows how to teach language to children. This is what happened to Tom. The speeh therpist played some games with him and heard how he talked. She made a recording of his speech, and chatted to his mom and dad about his background. They’d taken Tom to see a doctor, but the doctor hadn’t found anything wrong with him.He seemed peretly normal in every way-except he just wasn talking.Afer Tom and his parents had gone home, the therapist listened carefully to the recording she'd made. Then she looked at a chart which showed how language developed in children aged two, three, and four. She could see Tom was a long way behind. The next step, she deided, was to teach Tom how to say some new sentences like”kick a red ball,”and”the clownis kicking a ball.”Tom didn’t get the new sentences right straight away. But therapist was very patient, and after a few more visit he started to make progress.40.How did the author introduce the topic of this passage?A.By describing grammar errors made by kids.B.By sharing experiences of speech therapists.C.By using Tom's case as an example.D.By stating his personal views to readers.41.What can be infered from the passage about“language delay?A.It can be prevented by doctors.B.It is seldom found among children.C.It can be improved with certain help.D.It may result from hearing problems.42.What did the speech therapist do to help Tom?A.She told others that Tom was normal in every way.B.She asked Tom to play with some Delay?B.What Can Be Done about Kids with Language Delay?C.How Can Language Delay Be Easily Detected?D.How Can Parents Prevent Kids from Language Delay?Passage ThreeOn a dry and cold Friday afenoon last October,Sharon Seline exchanged text messages with her daugher who was in college. They“chatted”back and forh, with the mom asking how things were going and the daugher answering psitively flowed by enotions(表情符)showing smils,b-i-g smiles and hearts.Later that night, her daughter attempted suicide. In the days that followed,it came to light that she'd hidden herself in her dorm, crying and showing signs of depression-a completely different reality from the one that she conveyed in text and Facebook posts. As human beings, our only real method of connection is through real communication.Studies show that only7%of communication is based on writing and spraking. The majority of93%is based on body language.Indeed,it’s only when we can heard a tone of voice or look into someone’s eyes that we’re able to know when“I'm fine"doesn't mean they're fine all. This is where social media gets risky. With modem technology, anyone can hide beind the text, the e-mail,or the Facebook post, projecting any image they want and creating a false image of their choosing. They can be whoever they want to be.And without the ability to receive body language, their audiences are none the wiser. This presents a paradox which doesn’t exist before. With all the power social technologies at our fingertips,we are more connected-and potentially more disconnected-than ever betore.Every relevant metric(衡量标准)shows that we are interacting at a great speed and frequency through social media. But are we really communicating?With93%of our communication context(语境)lost,we are now attempting to establish relationships and make decisions based on phrases or emoticons, which may or may not accurately represent the truth.44.Why does social media get risky according to the author?A.The users’social connection is lost.B.The users’messages may be ignored.C.The users'real emotion may be hidden.D.The users'voices can hardy be heard.45.What phenomenon does the underlined word“paradox" (Paragraph7)reflect?A.People can be both happy and unhappy.B.People can be both connected and disconneted.C.People can end up being both wise and stupid.D.People can form both true and false impressions.46.What is true about today's communication through social media?A.It causes more health risks.B.It gives litle communication context.C.It leads to better relationships.D.It improves the quality of interaction.47.What is the best title for the passage?A.Social Media and Its FunctionB.Social Media and Its AbusesC.Social Media and Its FutureD.Social Media and Its RisksPassage FourAlan Lakein,a time management expert, thinks that nothing is a total waste of time, including doing nothing at times. If you arrange things so that you find time torelax and“do nothing",you will get more done and have more fun doing it.One of his clients,a space engineer, didn't know how to“do nothing”.Every minute of his leisure time was scheduled with intense activities. He had an outdoor-activites schedule in which he switched from skiing to tennis. His girlfriend kept up with him in these activities, although she would have preferred just to sit by the fire and relax once in a while.Like too many people,he felt the need to be doing something all the time, for doing nothing seemed a waste of time. His“relaxing by the fire" consisted of playing chess, reading magazines,or checking emails. For an experiment,Alan asked him to"waste"his time for five minutes during one of their sessions together. What the engineer ended up doing was relaxing, stting quietly and daydreaming. When he was finally able to admit that emotional reasons caused him to reject relaxing as waste of time,he began to look more critically at that way of thinking.Once he knew that relaxing was a good use of time,he became less serious about being busy and started enjoying each activity more.Previously he had been so busy doing that he had no time to have fun at anything. He began to do less and have more fun. When Alan saw the client about three years later,he still had as busy a schedule as ever, but he was able to balance his activity with relaxing so that he came back to work Monday morning not feeling tired out from a busy weekend but refreshed.48.What did“doing nothing"mean to the space engineer at first?A.Outdoor activities.B.A waste of time.C.Few daily schedules.D.More family hours.49.What made the engineer reject relaxing?A.Social reasons.B.Family reasons.C.Emotional reasons.D.Physical reasons.50.What happened after the engineer learmed“doing nothing?A.He was not as busy as before.B.He began to enjoy each activity more.C.He started to do more of everything.D.He did not have as much fun as before.51.What can be iferered from the passage about“doing nothing"?A.It makes people enjoy more indoor activities.B.It enables you to have more work time.C.It serves to improve family relationship.D.It helps you do things more efficiently.Passage FiveSocrates is often referred to as one of the founders of Westerm philosophy, and yet he wrote nothing, estabished no school, and held no particular theories of his own. What he did do,however, was frequently ask the questions that interested him,and in doing so developed a new way of thinking. This method proceeds(展开)as a dialogue between opposing views, and it earmed him many enemies in Athens, where he lived. As a young man,Socrates is believed to have studied natural philosophy, looking at the various explanations of the nature of the universe, but then became involved in the politics of the city-state and concerned with more down-to-earth moral issues, such as the nature of justice. However,he was not interested in winning arguments,or arguing for the sake of making money.Nor was he seeking answers or explanations. He was simply examining the basis of the concepts we apply to ourselves(such as“good",“bad”,and“just"),for he believed that understanding what we are is the first task of philosophy. He was sentenced to death on charges of corrupting the young with bad ideas. But he also had many followers, and among them was Plato, who recorded Socrates’ideas in the written works, called dialogues,in which Socrates sets about examining various ideas.Socrates’central concerm, then, was the examination of life, and it was his cruel questioning of people's most valued beliefs(largely about themselves)that earned him his enemies-but he remained committed to his task until the very end.According to the account of his defense at his trial,Socrates chose death rather than face a life of ignorance:“The life which is unexamined is not worth living”.52.What is true about Socrates?A.Socrates solved the problems of Westerm philosophy.B.Socrates tried to find answers to his questions.C.Socrates forced his enemies to accept his ideas.D.Socrates cared about the meaning of life.53.What is the most important task of philosophy according to Socrates?A.Understanding our true self.B.Examining some basic concepts.C.Challenging the views of enemies.D.Giving explanations for arguments.54.What is the passage mainly about?A.Socrates’beliefs of philosophy.B.Socrates’outlook on death,C.Socrates’influence on youths.D.Socrates'questions about universe.55.What is the tone of the passage?A.Humorous.B.Bitter.C.Sympathetic.D.Objective.V.Daily Conversation(15points)Directions:Pick out appropriate expressions from the eigt choices below and complete the following dialogues by blackening the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet.A.Sounds great!B.This is our frst trip here.C.When shall we set off?D.Could you recommend some places for us?E.You are welcome.F.What could I get?G.Have great fun.H.Is there anyhing interesting there?Receptionist:Good momning!Mr.Smith:Good morming!Today we are free for sightseeing. _____56___Receptionist:Okay.Have you ever been here before?Mr.Smith:No.____57____Receptionist:Then,I suggest that you visit the Ancient Cultural Street.Mr.Smith:_____58___Receptionist:Yes.The architectureis wonderful. It represents the folk style of the Qing Dynasty.Mr.Smith:___59_____Thank you very much.Receptionist:_____60___Have a good time!第Ⅱ卷(非选择题,共25分)VI.Writing(25points)Directions:For this part, you are supposed to write an e-mail in about100-120words based onthe following situation.Remember to write it clearly.61.新学期伊始,你们班准备组织-场迎新晚会,让同学们熟悉起来。

Choose the one that you think is the best answer Mark your answer on the Answer Sheet.Passage OneWhen something terrible happens w our friends, we often can't respond properly, Wehurt their feelings by saying exactly what they don't want to hear; we stay away when theyneed. us; or if we do get in touch, we avoid the sensitive subject altogether. We don't meanto be rude or thoughtless- so why do we act this way when we really want to help? How canwe find the right thing to say to a friend in a difficult situation? Here are some suggestions:Keep the focus off yourself. When you are with a friend who has suffered a tragedy, rememberthat you are there to provide support and comfort. Concentrate on his or her feelings ratherthan your own. Don't use a friend's tragedy as an excuse to drag out similar experiences you’ve had. There's nothing wrong with saying: I've been through it, I know how you mustfee", but you should not say: “When m y mother died, I stopped eating for a week." Noteveryone experiences grief in the same way, so don't impose guilt on a person who doesn'tshow emotion as openly as you might.Just listen. Many painful people need to mourn, to go through the normal stages ofgrief and to talk about their feelings: and memories, So just 1isten, accept your friend'sfeelings and be understanding. Some hurting people may not want to say anything. and youhave to respect that too. One man says that the best phone calls he got were from a friendwho called once a day and talked for no more than a minute, letting him know she wasthinking of him.Offer help. An emotionally hurt person may be overwhelmed by the details of everydaylife. Offer to do something, finish a project or take the kids to their piano lessons. “When I had a broken back, I felt completely out of control," says Joan, a divorced woman with ayoung daughter. “When my neighbors took turns filing in for me in the car pool, it helped merelax. It was the difference between chaos and order."Be patient. The grief and sorrow can range in intensity and duration and often lasts afew years. Let the person know you're concerned. You might say: “What you're going throughmust be very difficult, and I don't think you have to do it alone. I’d like to help and would be always here with you”.No one can be expected to know what to say or how to act in every difficult situation. But if you begin with common sense and politeness, and focus on being supportive, s0on youwill know the right way to respond.51. When we have hurt our friends in trouble by improper response, we ______.A. usually did it on purposeB. would feel regretful for what we had said and doneC. would stay away from themD. should continue get in touch with them52. When you are talking with a hurting friend, the best policy is ______.A. to listen patientlyB. to try to comfort him or herC. to tell him or her something entertainingD. to give him or her a phone call53. If a friend's grief seems to be very intense or long-lasting, we should ______.A. let it be since someone can't rush griefB. advise him or her to take the kids out for classesC. let the person know we are concerned and always ready to helpD. help him or her relax and make everything in order54. Which of the following statement is true ?A. If we follow the suggestions offered in this article, we will know how to behave in everydifficult situation.B.Acting politely is always the right way to respond.C.The article offers us the common senses and courses of how to act properly when our friendis in trouble.D.If we don't talk the sensitive subject, we can avoid hurting our friends.Passage TwoMajor companies are already in pursuit of commercial applications of the new biology. They dream of placing enzymes in the. automobile to monitor exhaust and send data onpollution to a microprocessor that will then adjust the engine. They speak of what the NewYork Times calls" metal-hungry microbes that might be used to mine valuable trace metalsfrom ocean water". They have already demanded and won the right to patent new life forms. Nervous critics, including many scientists, worry that there is corporate, national, international, and inter-scientific rivalry in the entire biotechnological field. They create images not of oilspills, but of microbe spills" that could spread disease and destroy entire populations. Thecreation and accidental release of extremely poisonous microbes, however, is only one causefor alarm. Completely rational and respectable scientists are talking about possibilities thatstagger the imagination.Should we breed people with cow-like stomachs so they can digest grass and hay, thereby relieving the food problem by modifying us to eat lower down on the food chain?Should we biologically alter workers to fit the job requirement, for example, creating pilotswith faster reaction times or assembly-line workers designed to do our monotonous work forus?. Should we attempt to eliminate inferior" people and breed a "super race"? (Hitler triedthis, but without the genetic weaponry that may soon issue from our laboratories.) Should we produce soldiers to do our fighting? Should we use genetic forecasting to pre-eliminate unfit babies? Should we grow reserve organs for ourselves, each of us having, as it were, a savings bank" full of spare kidney, livers, or hands?Wild as these notions may sound every one has its advocates (and opposers) in the scientific community as well as its striking commercial application. As two critics of genetic engineering, Jeremy Rifkin and Ted Howard, stale in their book Who Should Play God?, "Broad scale genetic engineering will probably be introduced to America much the same way as assembly lines, automobiles, vaccines, computers and all the other technologies. A8 each new genetic advance becomes commercially practical, a new consumer need will be exploited anda market for the new technology will be created."55. According to the passage, the exhaust from a car engine could probably be checkedby____A. using metal- hungry microbesB. making use of enzymesC. adjusting the engineD. patenting new life forms56. According to the passage, which of the following would worry the critics the most?A. The unanticipated explosion of population.B.The creation of biological solar cellsC.The accidental spill of oil.D.The unexpected release of destructive microbes57. Which of the following notions is NOT mentioned?A. Developing a "savings bank" of one's organsB. Breeding soldiers for a war.C. Producing people with cow-like stomachs.D. Using genetic forecasting to cure diseases58. According to the passage, Hitler attempted to____.A. change the pilots biologically to win the warB. develop genetic farming for food supplyC. kill the people he thought of as inferiorD. encourage the development of genetic weapons for the warPassage ThreeThere was a time in the early history of man when the days had no names! The reasonwas quite simple: Men had not invented the week.In those days, the only division of times was the month, and there were too many daysin the month for each of them to have a separate name. But when men began to build citiesthey wanted to have ,a special day on which 10 trade, a market day. Sometimes these marketdays were fixed at every tenth day, sometimes every seventh or every fifth day. The Babylonians decided that it should be every seventh day. On this day they didn't work, butmet for trade and religious festivalsThe Jews followed their example, but kept every seventh day for religious purposes, Inthis way, the week came into existence. It was the space between market days. The Jews gave each of the seven days a name, but it was really a number after the Sabbath day (which was Saturday), For example, Wednesday was called the fourth day (four days after Saturday). When the Egyptians adopted the seven-day week, they named the days after five planets the sun and the moon. The Romans used the Egyptian names for their days of theweek: the day of the sun, of the moon, of the planet Mars, of Mercury, of Jupiter, of Venus, and of Saturn. While we get our names for the days not from the Romans but from the Anglo-Saxons,who called most of the days after their own gods, which were roughly the same as the godsof the Romans, A day, by the way, used to be counted as the space between sunrise andsunset. The Romans counted it as from midnight, and most modern nations use this method.59. In the early times there were no names for the days, because men____"A. had not yet created the idea of grouping seven days in a weekB. did not know how to spell "week"C. considered unnecessary to have the namesD. did not believe it was the time to invent the week60. Which of the following is true for those earlier times?A. It became necessary for each day to have a separate name when men began to build cities.B. There were so many days in the month that it was impossible for each day to have its own name.C. At that time the day that got a name was called a market day.D. The Babylonians decided people must work on a market day.61. In this context, the word week" means____ .A. any market dayB. the Sabbath DayC. the days between those for religious purposesD. the day for trade and religious festivals62. Our present names for the days of the week are ____.A. quite different from the old timesB. mostly named after the gods of the Anglo-SaxonsC. more or less the same us those the Egyptians are usingD. used to count the number of days in a weekSection B Sentence Understanding and MatchingDirections: Match the Chinese sentences in the left column with the English in the right column and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet.第II 卷Part IV Translation (2 points each, 20 points) Section A English-ChineseTranslation Directions: Translate the following sentences from the reading passages in Part I intoChinese.71. 二、阅读理解
Much of the world’s coffee is grown in Brazil. Not long ago an unseasonable frost swept through coffee plantations there. The result affected people in many countries for a long time to come. At first, reports of serious damage were received. These led to a sharp rise in the price of coffee, which had not been a highly profitable crop. Growers in other countries made extra efforts to increase their exports to profit from the expected shortage. However, they were hampered by smugglers who wished to avoid government controls. The price of coffee fell slightly. Then large restaurants and hotels began to buy coffee to build up stocks for future use. The price rose sharply and public resistance developed. Housewives organized a boycott of coffee. This led to a rise in the price of tea and a fall in the price of coffee. Much to the dismay of growers, the price fell sharply. Their response was rather surprising. Instead of selling their stocks of coffee, they began to buy on the open market. Their motive was clear. They wanted to force the price of coffee up, and one way of doing this was to reduce the amount of coffee available for sale to the public. Luckily for coffee-drinkers, this move failed. Restaurants and hotels stopped buying coffee. Large numbers of small growers had to sell their crops to keep alive. The large growers found that they were buying more coffee than they were growing. They abandoned their efforts and let the normal law of supply and demand decided the price. Meanwhile, millions of people had changed to cheaper drinks and would not switch back to coffee.(10分)

ADirections:In this part there are three passages followed by questions, each with four suggested answers marked4),B),C)and D).Choose the one that you think is the best answer Mark your answer on the Answer Sheet.Passage OneWhen something terrible happens to our friends,we often can't respond properly,We hurt their feelings by saying exactly what they don't want to hear;we stay away when they ;or if we do get in touch,we avoid the sensitive subject altogether. We don't mean to be rude or thoughtless—so why do we act this way when we really want to help? How can we find the right thing to say to a friend in a difficult situation? Here are some suggestions:Keep the focus off yourself. When you are with a friend who has suffered a tragedy, remember that you are there to provide support and comfort.Concentrate on his or her feelings rather than your own.Don't use a friend's tragedy as an excuse to drag out similar experiences you’ve had. There's nothing wrong with saying:I've been through it,I know how you must feel", but you should not say:“When my mother died,I stopped eating for a week."Not everyone experiences grief in the same way,so don't impose guilt on a person who doesn't show emotion as openly as you might.Just listen. Many painful people need to mourn,to go through the normal stages of grief andto talk about their feelings and memories,So just listen, accept your friend's feelings and be understanding. Some hurting people may not want to say anything, and you have to respect that too.One man says that the best phone calls he got were from a friend who called once a day and talked for no more than a minute, letting him know she was thinking of him.Offer help.An emotionally hurt person may be overwhelmed by the details of everyday life.Offer to do something, finish a project or take the kids to their piano lessons.“When I had a broken back,I felt completely out of control,"says Joan,a divorced woman with a young daughter.“When my neighbors took turns filing in for me in the car pool,it helped me relax. But if you begin with common sense and politeness, and focus on being supportive, soon you will know the right way to respond.51.When we have hurt our friends in trouble by improper response,we______.ually did it on purposeB.would feel regretful for what we had said and doneC.would stay away from themD.should continue get in touch with them52.When you are talking with a hurting friend, the best policy is______.A.to listen patientlyB.to try to comfort him or herC.to tell him or her something entertainingD.to give him or her a phone call53.If a friend's grief seems to be very intense or long-lasting,we should______.A.let it be since someone can't rush griefB.advise him or her to take the kids out for classesC.let the person know we are concerned and always ready to helpD.help him or her relax and make everything in order54.Which of the following statement is true?A.If we follow the suggestions offered in this article,we will know how to behave in every difficult situation.B.Acting politely is always the right way to respond.C.The article offers us the common senses and courses of how to act properly when our friend is in trouble.D.If we don't talk the sensitive subject,we can avoid hurting our friends.Passage TwoMajor companies are already in pursuit of commercial applications of the new biology. They dream of placing enzymes in the automobile to monitor exhaust and send data on pollution to a microprocessor that will then adjust the engine. They create images not of oil spills, but of“microbe spills"that could spread disease and destroy entire populations. The creation and accidental release of extremely poisonous microbes, however,is only one cause for pletely rational and respectable scientists are talking about possibilities that stagger the imagination.Should we breed people with cow-like stomachs so they can digest grass and hay, thereby relieving the food problem by modifying us to eat lower down on the food chain?Should we biologically alter workers to fit the job requirement, for example, creating pilots with faster reaction times or assembly-line workers designed to do our monotonous work for us?.Should we attempt to eliminate“inferior"people and breed a"super race"?(Hitler tried this, but without the genetic weaponry that may soon issue from our laboratories.)Should we produce soldiers to do our fighting?Should we use genetic forecasting to pre-eliminate unfit babies?Should we grow reserve organs for ourselves, each of us having,as it were,a savings bank"full of spare kidney, livers,or hands?Wild as these notions may sound every one has its advocates(and opposers)in the scientific community as well as its striking commercial application. As two critics of genetic engineering,Jeremy Rifkin and Ted Howard, stale in their book Who Should Play God?,"Broad scale genetic engineering will probably be introduced to America much the same way as assembly lines, automobiles, vaccines, computers and all the other technologies. As each new geneticadvance becomes commercially practical,a new consumer need will be exploited and a market for the new technology will be created."55.According to the passage, the exhaust from a car engine could probably be checked by____ing metal-hungry microbesB.making use of enzymesC.adjusting the engineD.patenting new life forms56.According to the passage, which of the following would worry the critics the most?A.The unanticipated explosion of population.B.The creation of biological solar cellsC.The accidental spill of oil.D.The unexpected release of destructive microbes57.Which of the following notions is NOT mentioned?A.Developing a"savings bank"of one's organsB.Breeding soldiers for a war.C.Producing people with cow-like stomachs.ing genetic forecasting to cure diseases58.According to the passage,Hitler attempted to____.A.change the pilots biologically to win the warB.develop genetic farming for food supplyC.kill the people he thought of as inferiorD.encourage the development of genetic weapons for the warPassage ThreeThere was a time in the early history of man when the days had no names! The reason was quite simple:Men had not invented the week.In those days, the only division of times was the month, and there were too many days in the month for each of them to have a separate name. But when men began to build cities, they wanted to have a special day on which to trade,a market day.Sometimes these market days were fixed at every tenth day, sometimes every seventh or every fifth day.The Babylonians decided that it should be every seventh day.On this day they didn't work, but met for trade and religious festivals The Jews followed their example, but kept every seventh day for religious purposes,In this way,the week came into existence. It was the space between market days. The Jews gave each of the seven days a name, but it was really a number after the Sabbath day(which was Saturday),For example,Wednesday was called the fourth day(four days after Saturday),When the Egyptians adopted the seven-day week, they named the days after five planets, the sun and the moon. The Romans counted it as from midnight, and most modern nations use this method.59.In the early times there were no names for the days, because men____"A.had not yet created the idea of grouping seven days in a weekB.did not know how to spell"week"C.considered unnecessary to have the namesD.did not believe it was the time to invent the week60.Which of the following is true for those earlier times?A.It became necessary for each day to have a separate name when men began to build cities.B.There were so many days in the month that it was impossible for each day to have its own name.C.At that time the day that got a name was called a market day.D.The Babylonians decided people must work on a market day.61.In this context, the word“week"means____.A.any market dayB.the Sabbath DayC.the days between those for religious purposesD.the day for trade and religious festivals62.Our present names for the days of the week are____.A.quite different from the old timesB.mostly named after the gods of the Anglo-SaxonsC.more or Circadian rhythms (生理节奏)can become compromised quite easily. Many people with sleep troubles tend to vary bedtimes. To avoid this common problem, sleep sufferers should go to bed and wake up at the same time every day. To help improve circadian rhythms, sufferers should enjoy 15 minutes of sun exposure the first thing in the morning.A bedtime routine can help prevent insomnia (失眠).One hour before bedtime, one should lower the lights and relax. Reading a book or listening to calm music can help prepare the body for a good night's sleep. He was saying such things as “kick ball” and “want car”, and using lots of one-word sentences. He should have been saying some really long sentences and telling stories with them. He wasn’t. Something had gone terribly wrong.Quite a few children have what is called a“language delay”. For some reason they don’tlearn to speak as quickly as they should. Their friends shoot ahead and they’re left behind. As a result, they get very lonely. Nobody wants to talk to you if you can’t talk back. Can anything be done to help these children? Yes. They can go to see a speech therapist—a person who' s specially trained to work out what' s wrong and who knows how to teach language to children. This is what happened to Tom. The speech therapist played some games with him and heard how he talked. She made a recording of his speech, and chatted to his mom and dad about his background. They’d taken Tom to see a doctor, but the doctor hadn’t found anything wrong with him. He seemed perfectly normal in every way—except he just wasn’t talking. After Tom and his parents had gone home, the therapist listened carefully to the recording she’d made. Then she looked at a chart which showed how language developed in children aged two, three, and four. She could see Tom was a long way behind. The next step, she decided, was to teach Tom how to say some new sentences like " kick a red ball,'‘ and " the clown is kicking a ball. " Tom didn' t get the new sentences right straight away. But the therapist was very patient, and after a few more visits he started to make some progress.40.How did the author introduce the topic of this passage?A.By describing grammar errors made by kids.B.By sharing experiences of speech therapists.C.By using Tom’s case as an example.D.By stating his personal views to readers.41.What can be inferred from the passage about “language delay”?A.It can be prevented by doctors.B. It may result from hearing problems.42.What did the speech therapist do to help Tom?A.She told others that Tom was normal in every way.B.She asked Tom to play with some other children.C.She made some recordings of his parents' s peech.D.She taught Tom new sentences in a patient way.43. What is the best title for the passage?A.What Can Doctors Do with Language Delay?B.What Can Be Done about Kids with Language Delay?C.How Can Language Delay Be Easily Detected?D.How Can Parents Prevent Kids from Language Delay?Passage ThreeOn a dry and cold Friday afternoon last October, Sharon Seliiie exchanged text messages with her daughter who was in college. They "chatted" back and forth, with the mom asking how things were going and the daughter answering positively followed by emoticons(表情符)showing smiles, b-i-g smiles and hearts.Later that night, her daughter attempted suicide. In the days that followed, it came to light that she’d hidden herself in her dorm, crying and showing signs of depression—a completely different reality from the one that she conveyed in texts and Facebook posts. As human beings, our only real method of connection is through real communication. Studies show that only 7% of communication is based on writing and speaking. The majority of 93% is based on body language. Indeed, it’s only when we can hear a tone of voice or look into someone’s eyes that we' re able to know when“I’m fine”doesn’t mean they’re fine at all. This is where social media gets risky. With modem technology, anyone can hide behind the text, the e-mail, or the Facebook post, projecting any image they want and creating a false image of their choosing. They can be whoever they want to be. And without the ability to receive body language, their audiences are none the wiser. This presents a paradox which doesn' t exist before. With all the powerful social technologies at our fingertips, we are more connected—and potentially more disconnected—than ever before.Every relevant metric (衡量标准)shows that we are interacting at a great speed and frequency through social media. But are we really communicating? With 93% of our communication context (语境)lost, we are now attempting to establish relationships and make decisions based on phrases or emoticons, which may or may not accurately represent the truth.44.Why does social media get risky according to the author?A. The users’ social connection is lost.B. The users’ messages may be ignored.C. The users' real emotion may be hidden.D. The users’ voices can hardly be heard.45.What phenomenon does the underlined word “paradox" (Paragraph 7)reflect?A.People can be both happy and unhappy.B.People can be both connected and disconnected.C.People can end up being both wise and stupid.D.People can form both true and false impressions.46. What is true about today' s communication through social media?A. It causes more health risks.B. It gives little communication context.C. It leads to better relationships.D. It improves the quality of interaction.47.What is the best title for the passage?A.Social Media and Its FunctionB. Social Media and Its AbusesC. Social Media and Its FutureD. Social Media and Its RisksPassage FourAlan Lakein, a time management expert, thinks that nothing is a total waste of time, including doing nothing at times. If you arrange things so that you find time to relax and “do nothing”, you will get more done and have more fun doing it.One of his clients, a space engineer, didn' t know how to "do nothing”.Every minute of his leisure time was scheduled with intense activities. He had an outdoor-activities schedule in which he switched from skiing to tennis. His girlfriend kept up with him in these activities, although she would have preferred just to sit by the fire and relax once in a while. Like too many people, he felt the need to be doing something all the time, for doing nothing seemed a waste of time. His " relaxing by the fire" consisted of playing chess, reading magazines, or checking emails. For an experiment, Alan asked him to “waste" his time for five minutes during one of their sessions together. What the engineer ended up doing was relaxing, sitting quietly and daydreaming. When he was finally able to admit that emotional reasons caused him to reject relaxing as a waste of time, he began to look more critically at that way of thinking. Once he knew that relaxing was a good use of time, he became less serious about being busy and started enjoying each activity.Previously he had been so busy doing that he had no time to have fun at anything. He began to do less and have more fun. When Alan saw the client about three years later, he still had as busy a schedule as ever, but he was able to balance his activity with relaxing so that he came back to work Monday morning not feeling tired out from a busy weekend butrefreshed.48.What did“doing nothing”mean to the space engineer at first?A. Outdoor activities.B. A waste of time.C. Few daily schedules.D. More family hours.49.What made the engineer reject relaxing?A. Social reasons.B. Family reasons.C. Emotional reasons.D. Physical reasons.50.What happened after the engineer learned "doing nothing"?A. He was not as busy as before.B. He began to enjoy each activity more.C. He started to do more of everything.D. He did not have as much fun as before.51.What can be inferred from the passage about “doing nothing”?A.It makes people enjoy more indoor activities.B.It enables you to have more work time.C.It serves to improve family relationship.D.It helps you do things more efficiently.Passage FiveSocrates is often referred to as one of the founders of Western philosophy, and yet he wrote nothing, established no school, and held no particular theories of his own. What he did do, however, was frequently ask the questions that interested him, and in doing so developed a new way of thinking. This method proceeds (展开)as a dialogue between opposing views , and it earned him many enemies in Athens, where he lived.Aa a young man, Socrates is believed to have studied natural philosophy, looking at the various explanations of the nature of the universe, but then became involved in the politics of the city-state and concerned with more down-to-earth moral issues, such as the nature of justice. However, he was not interested in winning arguments, or arguing for the sake of making money. Nor was he seeking answers or explanations. He was simply examining the basis of the concepts we apply to ourselves (such as "good" , "bad" , and "just" ) , for he believed that understanding what we are is the first task of philosophy. He was sentenced to death on charges of corrupting the young with bad ideas. But he alsohad many followers, and among them was Plato, who recorded Socrates' ideas in the written works, called dialogues, in which Socrates sets about examining various ideas.Socrates, central concern, then, was the examination of life, and it was his cruel questioning of people' s most valued beliefs (largely about themselves) that earned him his enemies—but he remained committed to his task until the very end. According to the account of his defense at his trial, Socrates chose death rather than face a life of ignorance:“The life which is unexamined is not worth living. ”52.What is true about Socrates?A.Socrates solved the problems of Western philosophy.B.Socrates tried to find answers to his questions.C.Socrates forced his enemies to accept his ideas.D.Socrates cared about the meaning of life.53.What is the most important task of philosophy according to Socrates?A. Understanding our true self.B. Examining some basic concepts.C. Challenging the views of enemies.D. Giving explanations for arguments.54.What is the passage mainly about?A. Socrates’ beliefs of philosophy.B. Socrates’ outlook on death.C. Socrates' influence on youths.D. Socrates’ questions about universe.55.What is the tone of the passage?A. Humorous.B. Bitter.C. Sympathetic.D. Objective.V. When you are with a friend who has suffered a tragedy, remember that you are there to provide support and comfort. Concentrate on his or her feelings rather than your own. Don't use a fiend's tragedy as an excuse to drag out similar experiences you've had .There's nothing wrong with saying: "I've been trough it, I know how you must feel", but youshould not say: "When my mother died, I stopped eating for a week" Not everyone experiences grief in the sane way, so don't impose guilt on a person who doesn't show emotion as openly as you might.Just listen. Many painful people need o mourn, to go through the normal sages of grief and to talk about their feeling and memories. .So just listen, accept your fiend's feelings and be understanding. Some hurting people may not want to say anything and you have to respect that too.One man says that the best phone call he got were from a fiend who call once a day and talked for no more than a minute, letting him know she was thinking of him.Offer help. An emotionally hurt person may be overwhelmed by the details of everyday life.Offer to do something, finish a project or take the kids to their piano lessons.” When I had a broken back, I felt completely out of control," says Joan, a divorced woman with a young daughter. “When my neighbors took turns filling in for me in the car pool, it helped me relax. It was the difference between chaos and order."Be patient. The grief and sorrow can range in intensity and duration and often lasts a few years.Let the person know you're concerned. You might say: “What you're going through must be very difficult, and I don't think you have to do it alone.I'd like to help and would be always here with you."No one can be expected to know what to say or how to act in every difficult situation. But if you begin with common sense and politeness, and focus on being supportive, soon you will know the right way to respond.51. They speak of what the New York Times calls metal-hungry microbes that might be used to mine valuable trace metals from ocean water". They have already demanded and won the right to patent new life forms.Nervous critics, including many scientists, worry that there is corporate, national, international, and inter-scientific rivalry in the entire biotechnological field. They create images not of oil spills, but of microbe spills" that could spread disease and destroy entire populations. The creation and accidental release of extremely poisonous microbes, however, is only one cause for pletely rational and respectable scientists are talking about possibilities that stagger the imagination.Should we breed people with cow-like stomachs so they can digest grass and hay, thereby relieving the food problem by modifying us to eat lower down on the food chain? Should we biologically alter workers to fit the job requirement, for example, creating pilots with faster reaction times or assembly-line workers designed to do our monotonous work for us?. Should we attempt to eliminate inferior people and breed a super-race? (Hitler tried this, but without the genetic weaponry that may soon issue from our laboratories.) Should we produce soldiers to do our fighting?Should we use genetic forecasting to pre-eliminate "unfit" babies? Should we grow reserve organs for ourselves, each of us having, as it were, a "savings bank" full of spare kidney, livers,e or hands?Wild as these notions may sound. every. one has its advocates (and opposers)in the scientific community as well as its striking commercial application. As two critics of genetic engineering Jeremy Rifkin and Ted Howard, state in their book Who Should Play God?, “Broad scale genetic engineering will probably be introduced to America much the same way as assembly lines, automobiles, vaccines, computers and all the other technologies. As each new genetic advance becomes commercially practical,a new consumer need will be exploited and a market for the new technology will be created.55. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.Answer:There is no denying that the advancement of technology has brought about both positive and negative impacts on the environment. On one hand, technological progress has led to increased industrialization and urbanization, which have significantly contributed to environmental degradation such asair and water pollution, deforestation, and climate change. The excessive use of fossil fuels and chemicals has resulted in the release of harmful emissions into the atmosphere, leading to global warming and the depletion of the ozone layer. On the other hand, technology has also played a crucial role in the development of clean energy sources, waste management systems, and environmental conservation initiatives. Renewable energy sources like solar, wind, and hydroelectric power have helped reduce reliance on fossil fuels and decrease carbon emissions. Additionally, advancements in recycling and waste management technologies have led to the reduction of waste disposal in landfills and improved resource efficiency. In my opinion, while the negative impacts of technological advancement on the environment are undeniable, the benefits outweigh the drawbacks. It is essential to strike a balance between technological progress and environmental protection by implementing sustainable practices and regulations. Governments, industries, and individuals must work together to promote eco-friendly technologies and practices that minimize environmental harm and promote the conservation of natural resources for future generations.Overall, the advancement of technology is necessary for the continued development of society, but it must be accompanied by responsible environmental stewardship to ensure a sustainable future for the planet. In conclusion, the impact of technology on the environment is a complex issue that requires careful consideration and proactive measures to mitigate its negative effects. It is caused by the increasing levels of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, which trap heat and cause the Earth's temperature to rise. The effects of global warming are already being felt around the world, with more frequent and severe weather events, melting ice caps, and rising sea levels. To address this issue, it is important for individuals, communities, and governments to take action. One way to reduce carbon emissions is to use renewable sources of energy, such as solar and wind power, instead of fossil fuels. Another important step is to reduce waste and recycle as much as possible to lower our carbon footprint. In conclusion, global warming is a serious problem that requires urgent action. Choose the one that you think is the best answer Mark your answer on the Answer Sheet.Passage OneWhen something terrible happens w our friends, we often can't respond properly, Wehurt their feelings by saying exactly what they don't want to hear; we stay away when they need. us; or if we do get in touch, we avoid the sensitive subject altogether. We don't mean to be rude or thoughtless- so why do we act this way when we really want to help? How can we find the right thing to say to a friend in a difficult situation? Here are somesuggestions:Keep the focus off yourself. When you are with a friend who has suffered a tragedy, remember that you are there to provide support and comfort. Concentrate on his or her feelings rather than your own.Don't use a friend's tragedy as an excuse to drag out similar experiencesyou’ve had. There's nothing wrong with saying: I've been through it, I know how you must fee", but you should not say: “When my mother died, I stopped eating for a week." Not everyone experiences grief in the same way, so don't impose guilt on a person who doesn't show emotion as openly as you might.Just listen. Many painful people need to mourn, to go through the normal stages of grief and to talkabout their feelings: and memories, So just 1isten, accept your friend's feelings and be understanding. Some hurting people may not want to say anything. and you have to respect that too.One man says that the best phone calls he got were from a friend who called once a day and talked for no more than a minute, letting him know she was thinking of him.Offer help. An emotionally hurt person may be overwhelmed by the details of everyday life.Offer to do something, finish a project or take the kids to their piano lessons. “When I had a broken back, I felt completely out of control," says Joan, a divorced woman with a young daughter. “When my neighbors took turns filing in for me in the car pool, it helped me relax. It was the difference between chaos and order."Be patient. The grief and sorrow can range in intensity and duration and often lasts a fewyears. Let the person know you're concerned. You might say:“What you're going through must be very difficult, and I don't think you have to do it alone. I’d like to help and would be always here with you”.No one can be expected to know what to say or how to act in every difficult situation. But if you begin with common sense and politeness, and focus on being supportive, s0on you will know the right way to respond.51.When we have hurt our friends in trouble by improperresponse,we.ually did it onpurposeB.would feel regretful for what we had said anddoneC.would stay away from themD.should continue get in touch withthem52.When you are talking with a hurting friend, the bestpolicyis.A.to listenpatientlyB.to try to comfort him orherC.to tell him or her somethingentertainingD.to give him or her a phone call53.If a friend's grief seems to be very intense or long-lasting,weshould.A.let it be since someone can't rushgriefB.advise him or her to take the kids out forclassesC.let the person know we are concerned and always ready tohelpD.help him or her relax and make everything inorder54.Which of the following statement is true?A.If we follow the suggestions offered in this article, we will know how to behave in every difficultsituation.B.Acting politely is always the right way torespond.C.The article offers us the common senses and courses of how to act properly when our friend is introuble.D.If we don't talk the sensitive subject, we can avoid hurting our friends.Passage TwoMajor companies are already in pursuit of commercial applications of the new biology. They dream of placing enzymes in the. automobile to monitor exhaust and send data on pollution to a microprocessor that will then adjust the engine. They speak of what the New York Times calls"metal-hungry microbes that might be used to mine valuable trace metals from ocean water". They have already demanded and won the right to patent new lifeforms.Nervous critics, including many scientists, worry that there is corporate, national, international,andinter-scientific rivalry in the entire biotechnological field. They create images not of oil spills, but of microbe spills" that could spread disease and destroy entire populations. The creation and accidental release of extremely poisonous microbes, however, is only one cause for pletely rational and respectable scientists are talking about possibilities that stagger theimagination.Should we breed people with cow-like stomachs so they can digest grass and hay, thereby relieving the food problem by modifying us to eat lower down on the food chain? hould we biologically alter workers to fit the job requirement, for example, creating pilots with faster reaction times or assembly-line workers designed to do our monotonous work for us?. Should we attempt to eliminate inferior" people and breed a "super race"? (Hitler triedthis, but without the genetic weaponry that may soon issue from our laboratories.) Should we produce soldiers to do our fighting?Should we use genetic forecasting to pre- eliminate unfit babies? Should we grow reserve organs for ourselves, each of us having, as it were, asavingsbank"fullofsparekidney, livers, orhands?Wild as these notions may sound every one has its advocates (and opposers) in the scientific community as well as its striking commercialapplication. As two critics of genetic engineering,Jeremy Rifkin and Ted Howard, stale in their book Who Should Play God?, "Broad scale genetic engineering will probably be introduced to America much the same way asassemblylines, automobiles, vaccines, computers and all the other technologies. A8 each new genetic advance becomes commercially practical, a new consumer need will be exploited and a market for the new technology will becreated."55.According to the passage, the exhaust from a car engine could probably be checkedbyA. using metal-hungrymicrobesB. making use ofenzymesC. adjustingtheengineD. patenting new lifeforms56.According to the passage, which of the following would worry the critics themost?A.The unanticipated explosion of population.B.The creation of biological solar cellsC.The accidental spill ofoil.D.T he unexpected release of destructivemicrobes57.Which of the following notions is NOTmentioned?A.Developing a "savings bank" of one'sorgansB.Breeding soldiers for awar.C.Producing people with cow-likestomachs.ing genetic forecasting to curediseases58.According to the passage, Hitlerattemptedto.A.change the pilots biologically to win thewarB.develop genetic farming for foodsupplyC.kill the people he thought of asinferiorD.encourage the development of genetic weapons for the warPassage ThreeThere was a time in the early history of man when the days had no names! The reason was quite simple: Men had not invented the week.In those days, the only division of times was the month, and there were too many days in the month for each of them to have a separate name. But when men began to build cities they wantedto have ,a special day on which 10 trade, a market day.Sometimes these market days were fixed at every tenth day, sometimes every seventh or every fifth day. The Babylonians decided that it should be every seventh day.On this daythey didn't work, but met for trade and religious festivalsThe Jews followed their example, but kept every seventh day for religious purposes, In this way,the week came into existence. It was the space between market days. The Jews gave each of the seven days a name, but it was really a number after the Sabbath day (which was Saturday), Forexample, Wednesday was called the fourth day (four days after Saturday,When the Egyptians adopted the seven-day week, they named the days after five planets thesun and the moon. The Romans used the Egyptian names for their days of the week: the day of the sun, of the moon, of the planet Mars, of Mercury, of Jupiter, of Venus, and of Saturn. While we get our names for the days not from the Romans but from the Anglo-Saxons, who called most of the days after their own gods, which were roughly the same as the gods of the Romans, A day, by the way, used to be counted as the space between sunrise and sunset. The Romans counted it as from midnight, and most modern nations use this method.59.In the early times there were no names for the days, becausemen"A.had not yet created the idea of grouping seven days in aweekB.did not know how to spell"week"C.considered unnecessary to have the namesD.did not believe it was the time to invent the week60.Which of the following is true for those earlier times?A.It became necessary for each day to have a separate name when men began to buildcities.B.There were so many days in the month that it was impossible for each day to have its ownname.C.At that time the day that got a name was called a marketday.D.The Babylonians decided people must work on a marketday.61.In this context, the wordweek"means.A.any market dayB.the SabbathDayC.the days between those for religious purposesD.the day for trade and religiousfestivals62.Our present names for the days of theweekare.A.quite different from the oldtimesB.mostly named after the gods of theAnglo-SaxonsC.more or less the same us those the Egyptians areusinged to count the number of days in a weekSection B Sentence Understanding and MatchingDirections: Match the Chinese sentences in the left column with the English in the right column and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet.Part 1Part 2第II卷Part IV Translation (2 points each, 20 points)Section A English-Chinese TranslationDirections:TranslatethefollowingsentencesfromthereadingpassagesinPartIintoChinese.71.Don't use a friend's tragedy as an excuse to drag out similar experiences you'vehad.72.The grief and sorrow can range in intensity and duration and often lasts a fewyears.73.Wild as these notions may sound every one has its advocates (and opposers) in thescientific community as well as its striking commercialapplication.74.But when men began to build cities, they wanted to have a special day on which totrade, a marketday.75.When the Egyptians adopted the seven-day week, they named the days after fiveplanets, the sun and themoon.Section B Chinese-English TranslationDirections: Translate the following Chinese sentences into English.76.他再也不是十五年前的那个他了。
