Gift giving is different from culture to culture and person to person.
When giving gifts, sometimes color is important. For example, for many Chinese people around the world, red is a lucky color, and people often like to pack gifts in this color. However, did you know that in Korea, red is a color of death? That is why you should not pack gifts in this color if you are giving a gift to a Korean person.
What about western countries? In western countries ,the color of packing paper is not really important. But color does matter when givin g flowers, especially roses. You should not give red roses to a western person you don’t know very well because they are a symbol of love. You could give yellow roses instead as these are a symbol of friendship. You
could also send pink roses as gifts to say thank you.
What other things should you remember when giving gifts to someone from a different culture? Well, one thing you should keep in mind is the person’s religion. When choosing a gift for a Muslim or Jewish friend, you should never get goo d food including pork or things made from pigskin. Another thing that you shouldn’t get for a Muslim person is alcohol.
( ) 41. Red is a lucky color all over the world .
( ) 42. Yellow roses are a symbol of love.

Are you the only child in the family? If so, you are the most important in your family. Parents are the closest people to you in the world. But a lot of middle school students have a problem. They feel they're not as close to their parents as before. They even don't think their parents are fair to them.
Some students complain that their parents often say a lot to them, but never listen to them. Some say their parents don't allow them to play computer games when other classmates are doing that. Others say when they're making phone calls to friends, their parents like to ask if they're speaking to a boy or a girl. These make them very unhappy.
Some students even decide to leave home because they're afraid to tell their parents when they have done something wrong, especially when they do badly in exams. Then they usually think running away is the only choice But they don't know running away may bring them some more problems.
Problems are parts of life. Here are some suggestions for you to solve your problems.
1. Find a good chance to talk with your parents.Don't be afraid to tell them your feelings.
2. Get help from others like good friends or teachers.
3. Keep a diary to help you understand more about yourself and your feelings.
4. Show your parents you're growing up. Then they'll feel you're no longer a small child.
If you follow the advice, you'll have a happy life and never think of running away. When they are greeting each other, talking about an idea, thinking of finishing a talk, people don’t say exactly what they are thinking about. It’s an important way that people try to be nice to each other, and it is the closest people to an only child.

There is a sign at a Korean university asking tourists not to step into the gr ass to take photos. The sign is not written in Korean or English; it is written in Chinese.
These signs, and signs in other countries warning Chinese tourists about their behavior, have shamed many Chinese who worry about the image of the country.
Over 70 million Chinese tourists made overseas trips last year and spent $102 billion, more than the $84 billion spent by American and German tourists. For many Chinese tourists, it was their first trip abroad and they didn't know about foreign ways. And some of these tourists took their bad habits from China with them.
Wang Yang, a Chinese deputy prime minister, said, "They speak loudly in public, carve words or numbers on tourist attractions, cross the road when the traffic lights are still red and spit anywhere. It damages the image of the Chinese people and has a very bad influence Before you travel to a foreign country, it's important to learn some things about the country and its culture. You are guests in the country and it's important to respect your hosts. As more and more Chinese visit foreign countries, their behavior will certainly change and those shameful signs will, hopefully, disappear.

Thumbs Down to Texting (屈指发短信)
Do you have a mobile phone? Do you send text messages to your friends and family?
Text messaging or “texting” is becoming very popular. But, scientists have discovered that texting can give us problems with our hands. Be careful! Too much texting can cause swelling in our thumbs. Our thumbs were not made for pushing small buttons, over and over . Scientists call this problem RSI. We spoke to a doctor called Harriet Wilson, who treats many sick people with RSI. She says we need to see how much time we are spending in typing text messages. If we are spending more than 10-15 minutes at once, we could have problems in the future.
As mobile phones develop, they are getting smaller with buttons closer together. Texting with a smaller phone is worse than using a larger phone with bigger buttons. Using a computer keyboard and playing video games can cause the same problem. So more and more people could find themselves with RSI. Among them, most are university students and teenagers, as they do not know the risks of spending so much time using computer, video games and mobile phones. If we don't do something about this, too many young people could grow up in terrible pain.

Today let’s learn something about customs in Mexico. First let’s learn something about customs of giving gifts. If you are invited to a Mexican’s home, you are supposed to take gifts like flowers or candies. White flowers are good gifts, but it’s impolite to take red flowers, for the red color is the symbol of bad luck. Second, pay attention to the table manners there. It’s polite to put your hands on the table. Third, as for the custom I’m introducing, you may feel it’s very strange. You are supposed to arrive a little late if you are invited to a Mexican’s house. And it’s impolite to arrive on time or early. It’s so different from the custom in China.。
