If depositors should come to fear that a bank is not safe, that it cannot pay off all its depositors, then that fear might cause all the depositors to appear on the same day. If they did, the bank could not pay all accounts. However, if they did not all appear at once, then there would always be enough money to pay those who wanted their money when they need it. Mrs. Elsie Vaught has told us of a terrifying bank run that she had experienced. One day in December of 1925 several banks failed to open in a city where Mrs. Vaught lived. The other banks expected a run the next day, and so the officers of the bank in which Mrs. Vaught worked as a teller(出纳员)had enough money on hand to pay off their depositors. The officers simply told the tellers to pay on demand. The next morning a crowd gathered in the bank and on the sidewalk outside. The length of the line made many think that the bank could not possibly pay off everyone. People began to push and then to fight for places near the tellers’ windows. The power of the panic(惊慌) atmosphere was such that two tellers, though they knew that the bank was quite all right and could pay all depositors, drew their own money from the bank. Mrs. Vaught says that she had difficulty keeping herself from doing the same.6.A bank run happens when ________.A.a bank is closed for one or more daysB.too many depositors try to draw out their money at one timeC.there is not enough money to pay all its depositors at one timeD.tellers of a bank take their own money from the bank【批阅】回答正确!【答案】B7.The tellers in Mrs. Vaught’s bank were told to _________.A.explain why they could not pay out all accountsB.pay out accounts as requestedC.make the depositors believe that the bank was soundD.pay out money as slowly as possible【批阅】回答正确!【答案】B8.The main cause of a bank run is __________A.irresponsible bank officersck of moneyC.crowds of peopleD.inexperienced tellers【批阅】回答正确!【答案】C9.Which of the following did Mrs. Vaught say? _________A.She knew that the bank was not soundB.She feared that too many depositors drawing their money would close the bankC.She was not able to draw out her moneyD.She was tempted to draw out her money【批阅】回答正确!【答案】D10.According to the passage, the actions of the depositors of Mrs. Vaught’s bank were affected mainly by the _________.A.ease with which they could get their moneyB.confidence that Mrs. Vaught showedC.failure of several other banks to openD.confidence shown by other depositors of the bank【批阅】回答正确!【答案】DPassage 2Hair loss is one of those things we still do not understand. Science has, of course, shown that men are more likely than women to suffer from major hair loss. Some kinds of hair loss are temporary(暂时的), an effect of illness. In those cases we can expect the hair to grow back. It all depends on whether the hair root is alive. If it is not, hair loss is permanent(永久性的)and nothing will help. Some daily loss of hair is a normal, healthy sign. Most people lose between 40 to 50 scalp hairs each day. Each of these scalp hairs grows for from two to six years and then rests. About three months later it is pushed out by a new hair growing from the same root. This is not something that should cause great concern.Something else we know is that normal hair loss is seasonal, with the most hair loss occurring in the fall. Everyone experiences a normal circle of loss and growth. It really becomes a problem when hair loss is much greater than its growth. The main cause of hair loss in men seems to be accumulation(积累)of a hormone(荷尔蒙)in the body. When that hormone reaches a certain level, the hair growing period is shortened and hair loss is the result. There is no cure for most cases of hair loss. This, however, is not the end of the world.11.Science has shown that _________.A.hair loss is a normal, healthy signB.man should pay special attention to hair lossC.it’s likely that men have more problems of hair lossD.men lose hair than women do【批阅】回答正确!【答案】C12.The author thinks that _________.A.illness can cause hair lossB.human beings have no way to cure hair lossC.hair loss happening in the fall is an effect of illnessD.hair loss is permanent【批阅】回答正确!【答案】A13.We now know that the most hair loss happening in the autumn is _________.A.permanentB.healthy signC.seasonalD.nothing serious【批阅】回答正确!【答案】C14.The sentence “This, however, is not the end of the world” means _________.A.man is sure to find the best way of curing his hair loss in the futureB.the writer believes the earth exists for everC.we can’t destroy the world by any meansD.the last day will never come to our people【批阅】回答正确!【答案】A15.The best title for the passage may be _________.A.Loss or GrowthB.Hair LossC.Healthy SignD.Change with Seasons【批阅】回答正确!【答案】B语法词汇(共5小题,每小题4分,满分20分)16.Our school team ________ to take part in the tournament, but our principle is not very keen on the ideaA.has been askedB.has been askingC.have been askedD.have been asking【批阅】回答正确!【答案】A17.Each penny, dime ________ carefully by the bank teller.A.are countingB.is countingC.are countedD.is counted【批阅】回答正确!【答案】D18.Either her mother or her aunts ________ her a call every other day.A.givesB.giveC.is givenD.were given【批阅】回答正确!【答案】A19.See to it that the wounded and the dying ________ good care ofA.are takenB.is takenC.have takenD.has taken【批阅】回答正确!【答案】A20.The standards were ________ by the government.A.set upB.set offC.set downD.set out【批阅】回答正确!【答案】C完形填空(共10小题,每小题3分,满分30分)Alice, my friend’s daughter, goes to an expensive private school where she has a friend, Jane, who is on a full scholarship at this school. Indeed, the animal body is a machine. It is a machine composed of many parts doing some particular kind of work for which a particular kind of structure fits it.All the parts are dependent on each other and work together for the accomplishment of the total business of the machine. The locomotive must be provided with fuel, such as coal or wood or other combustible(易燃的)substance, the consumption of which provides the force or energy of the machine. The animal body must be provided with fuel, which is called food, which similarly provides the energy of the animal.Oxygen must be provided for the combustion of the fuel in the locomotive and of the food in the body. The locomotive is composed of special parts: the fire box for the storage and combustion (燃烧)of fuel; the steam pipes for the carriage of steam; the wheels for locomotion(移动); the chimney for throwing off waste. The animal body is similarly composed of such parts as the stomach for the storage and digestion of food, the organs for the throwing off of waste water, the blood vessels for the carriage of oxygen and food-holding blood, the legs or wings for locomotion.6. The body of an animal is like a locomotive in that ______.A.it is composed of many parts that work just like different parts of a locomotiveB.it can do some particular kind of workC.it works like all the machines in the worldD.both the animal and the locomotive need coal or wood as their fuel【批阅】回答正确!【答案】A7. However, chances are that you don’t act on our impulse(冲动), but let it pass instead. You know that to commit the action is wrong in some way and that other people will not accept your behavior. Perhaps the most interesting thing about the phenomenon of taboo(禁忌)behavior is how it can change over the years within the same society, how certain behavior and attitudes once considered taboo can become perfectly acceptable and natural at another point of time. One of the newest taboos in the American society is the topic of fat. Unlike many other taboos, fat is a topic that Americans talk about constantly. It’s not taboo to talk about fat; it’s taboo to be fat. The “in” look is thin, not fat. In the work world, most companies prefer youthful-looking, thin(苗条)executives(经理)to sell their image as well as their products to the public. The fat person, on the other hand, is thought of as lazy and lacking in energy and self-respect. After all, people think, how can people who care about themselves, and therefore the way they look, permit themselves to become fat? In an image-conscious society like the US, thin is “in”, fat is “out”.11. Reading comprehensionPart ADirections: Read the following passages, and choose the correct answers. (30 points)Passage 1How does it happen that children learn their mother tongue so well? When we compare them with adults learning a foreign language, we often find this an interesting fact. A little child without knowledge or experience often succeeds in a complete mastery of the language. A grown-up person with fully developed mental powers, in most cases, may end up with a faulty or inexact command. What accounts for this difference?Despite other explanations, the real answer in my opinion lies partly in the child himself, partly in the behavior of the people around him. In the first place, the time of learning mother tongue is the most favorable of all, namely, the first years of life. A child hears it from morning till night and, what is more important, always in its genuine form, with the right pronunciation, right intonation, right use of words and right structure. He drinks in all the words and expressions which come to him in a fresh, ever-bubbling spring. There is no resistance: there is perfect assimilation (消化).Then the child has, as it were, private lessons all the year round, while an adult student has each week a limited number of hours which he generally shares with others. The child has another advantage: he hears the language in all possible situations, always accompanied by the right kindof gestures and facial expressions. There is nothing unnatural, like the one often found in language lessons in schools, when one talks about ice and snow in June or scorching heat in January. And what a child hears is generally what immediately interests him. Again and again, when his attempts at speech are successful, his desires are understood and fulfilled. Finally, though a child's "teachers" may not have been trained in language teaching, their relations with him are always close and personal. They take great pains to make their lessons easy.26. C ompared with adults learning a foreign language, ____D______.A. children's way of learning their native language is very dullB. children need to spend more efforts in learning their nativelanguageC. children learn their native language in the same wayD. children learn their native language with ease27. A little child without knowledge or experience can have a goodcommand of their mother tongue.C. Adults' knowledge and mental power prevent them from completelymastering a foreign language.D. It is interesting to compare adults learning a foreign languagewith children learning their native language.28. T he reason that a child can learn his mother tongue very well__B_______.A. lies only in his environment of learningB. lies partly in his environment of learningC. has nothing to do with his environment of learningD. has not been mentioned in the passage29. W hich of the following is NOT true? DA. A child learning his native language has private lessons all theyear round.B. A child has plenty of opportunity to listen to others speaking hisnative language.C. It is possible for a child to hear his native language spoken inright pronunciation and right intonation.D. F rom the passage we know that gestures and facial expressions___B____.A. are always helpful to a child learning his native languageB. may assist a child in mastering his native languageC. should be avoided in teaching a child his native languageD. may delay a child mastering his native languagePassage 2Steve and Yaser first met in their chemistry class at an American university. Yaser was an international student from Jordan (约旦). He wanted to learn more about American culture and hoped that he and Steve would become good friends. At first, Steve seemed very friendly. He always greeted (问候) Yaser warmly before class. He even invited Yaser to have lunch with him. But after the semester was over, Steve seemed more distant (疏远的). The two former classmates didn't see each other very much at school. One day Yaser decided to call Steve but Steve didn't seem very interested in talking to him. Yaser was hurt by Steve's change of attitude. “Steve said we were friends.” Yaser complained, “and I thought friends were friends for ever.” Yaser is a little confused (困惑的). As a foreigner, he doesn't understand the way Americans view friendship.Americans use th e word “friend” in a very general way. They may call both casual acquaintances (熟人) and close companions “friends”. When the shared activity ends, the friendship may fade. In some cultures friendship means a strong life-long bond between two people. In these cultures friendships develop slowly, since they are built to last. But American society is in rapid change. Studies show that one out of five American families moves every year. American friendships develop quickly, and they may change quickly as well. People from the United States may at first seem friendly. Americans often chat easily with strangers. But American friendliness is not always an offer of true friendship. After an experience like Yaser's, people who have been in this country for only a few months may consider Americans to be fickle (在感情等方面变幻无常的). Learning how Americans view friendship can help non-Americans avoidmisunderstandings. It can also help them make friends in the American way.31. American society is in rapid change.34. W hat can we infer from the last two sentences of the passage? CA. Non-Americans can avoid any misunderstanding so long as they knowhow Americans view friendship.B. Non-Americans can certainly make friends in the American wayprovided they know how Americans view friendship.C. If non-Americans know how Americans view friendship, they can avoidsome misunderstandings.D. It's impossible for non-Americans to establish lasting friendshipwith Americans.35. T he passage mainly tells us ___D _____.A. the friendship between Yaser andB. Yaser's life in AmericaSteveC. fickle AmericansD. American friendshipPassage 3One of the most difficult problems a young person faces is deciding what to do. There are individuals, of course, who from the time they are six years old “know” that they want to be doctors or teachers or figh ters, but most of us do not get around to (考虑) making a decision about an occupation (职业) or career until somebody or something forces us to facethe problem.Choosing an occupation takes time, and there are a lot of things you have to think about as you try to decide what you would like to do. You may find that you will have to take special courses or get some actual work experience to qualify (具有资格) for a particular kind of work.Fortunately, there are a lot of people you can turn to for advice and help in making your decision. At most schools, there are teachers who are professionally qualified to give advice and information about job qualifications. And you can talk over your ideas as well with your family members or friends who are always ready to listen and to offer suggestions. But even if you get other people involved in helping you make a decision, self-evaluation is an important part of the decision making process. Here are my basic questions to think about:1. What are my abilities?2. What are my special interests?3. What are my physical abilities and limitations (弱点)?4. What are my previous (早先的) experiences?5. Am I willing to accept chance?6. What are my educational plans for the future? If you give serious thought to these questions, your self-evaluation should give you a clearer picture of your interests and abilities, and you should be able to start thinking of one or more occupations that will fit you as an individual.36. T he first paragraph tells us that ____B____.A. many of us begin to think about choosing a job at the early age ofsixB. many of us begin to think about choosing an occupation only undercertain pressureC. some people are never worried about their careerD. making a decision of what to do is not difficult but finding a goodjob is not easy37. T o find a good job, one must often have ___A______.A. both actual work experience and special training for the jobB. either actual work experience or special training for the jobC. self-evaluationD. special physical conditions39. T he author's purpose of offering the six questions is to __C__.A. summarize his pointB. give information about job qualificationsC. help you know yourself better so that you can choose a suitableoccupationD. help you get prepared for a job interviewPart BDirections: This passage is about the writer’s best friend. After reading it, you are required to complete the outline below it. (10 points)By the time I could drive, I only had a few friends. I feel sad that none of them has made the friendship last. Time tests friendships, and most of my friendships have exploded into bits and pieces that I call memories. It is not much fun to walk alone that road they call life.Strangely enough, my best friend is a girl. We used to spend a lot of time together when we were teenagers and we even joked about getting married and having ten kids (小孩). But it never happened like that. From the moment I met her I knew that we were going to be friends. What I didn't know was that this friendship would last. Within her there is a sanctuary (避难所) where my heart may speak and be heard. It's a poetic (像诗的) place where failure cannot find me, for she has hidden it too well. When I was with her, I was not the person I knew; rather, I was what I had always hoped to be. What more could I ask for?The fact that we are both married now has changed everything about ourrelationship. We don't write or call one another any more. I have never forgotten what it felt like to be friendless, and I sometimes worry about how my life would change if something happened to her. No replacement could fill the break in my heart. The time will soon come when our children will move on and leave us one after another. Going back to the America of 1910,we find that people were thinner than today, yet they ate more food. In those days people worked harder physically, walked more, used machines much less, and didn’t watch television.Several modern studies, besides, have shown that fatter people do not eat more on average than thinner people. In fact, some research work, such as the 1979 study of 3,545 London office workers, reports that fat people eat less man thinner people on average. Studies show that thin people are more active than fat people.A study by the research group at Stanford University School of Medicine found the following fact:the more the man ran, the greater body fat he lost. The more he ran,the greater was his need for food. Thus, those who ran the most ate the most, yet lost the greatest amount of body fat.6. Romulus and Remns, founders of ancient Rome, were said to have been brought up by wolves. It is believed that when a she-wolf loses her litter, she tries to find a human baby to take its place. This seemingly unreasonable idea did not become believable until the nineteenth century when a French doctor actually found a boy wandering in a forest. The boy had no clothes on and was judged to be ten years old by some experts. He did not walk straight up like a human being, but with both his hands and feet touching the ground. The boy could not speak but howled like a wolf. He did not eat any cooked food but raw meat such as hare, deer,or goat meat.He knew nothing about the relationships among human families. Finally the doctor won the boy’s trust, and the boy started to obey him. After many long years of devoted and patient instruction, the doctor managed to get the boy to dress himself in clothes and feed himself as a human being does. With great difficulty, the doctor was able to make the wolf-boy recognize and speak quite a few words.11. On the contrary, both their knowledge and experience are enriched. We feel that there are many disadvantages instreaming(把……按能力分班)students. It does not take into account the fact that children develop at different rates. It can have a bad effect on both the bright and the not-so-bright children. After all, it can be quite discouraging to be at the bottom of the top grade!Besides, it is rather unreal to grade people just according to their intellectual ability. This is only one aspect of their total personality. We are concerned(关注)to develop the abilities of all our students to the full, not just their academic ability. We also value personal qualities and social skills, and we find that mixed-ability teaching contributes to all these aspects of learning. In our classrooms, we work in various ways. The students often work in groups: this gives them the opportunity to learn to co-operate, to share, and to develop leadership skills. They also learn how to cope with personal problems as well as learning how to think, to make decisions, to analyze and evaluate, and to communicate effectively. The students learn from each other as well as from the teachers.Sometimes the students work in pairs; sometimes they work on individual tasks and assignments, and they can do this at their own speed. They also have some formal class teaching when this is appropriate. We encourage our students to use the library, and we teach them the skills they need in order to do this efficiently. An advanced student can do advanced work: it does not matter what age the child is. We expect our students to do their best, not their least, and we give them every encouragement to attain(实现)this goal.11.In the pass age, the author’s attitude towards “mixed-ability teaching” is _________.A.criticalB.approvingC.disapprovingD.objective【批阅】回答正确!【答案】B12.The phrase “held back” in Line 1 means “_________”.A.made someone remain in the same classesB.forced to study in the lower classesC.drawn to their studiesD.prevented from progressing【批阅】回答正确!【答案】D13.The author argues that a teacher’s chief concern(关注)should be the development of the students’ _________.A.personal qualities and social skillsB.total personalityC.learning ability and communicative skillsD.intellectual ability【批阅】回答正确!【答案】B14.Which of the following is NOT MENTIONED in Paragraph 3?A.Group work gives students the opportunity to learn to work together with others.B.Students also learn to develop their reasoning abilities.C.Group work provides students with the opportunity to learn to be capable organizers.D.Students also learn how to participate in teaching activities.【批阅】回答正确!【答案】D15.The author’s purpose(目的)in writing this passage is to_________.A.argue for teaching bright and not-so-bright students in the same classB.recommend pair work and group work for classroom activitiesC.offer advice on the proper use of the libraryD.emphasize the importance of appropriate formal classroom teaching.【批阅】回答正确!【答案】A语法词汇(共5小题,每小题4分,满分20分)16.One learns a language by making mistakes and ________ them.A.correctB.correctingC.correctsD.to correct【批阅】回答正确!【答案】B17.I can hardly imagine Peter ________ across the Atlantic Ocean in five days.A.sailB.to sailC.sailingD.to have sailed【批阅】回答正确!【答案】C18. They're a little shy. And please call me Diana! Now let me show you your room and then we can have a nice cup of tea. Or would you like some coffee? ""I'd like to try a cup of English tea, made in England.""This is your bedroom. There's a nice view of the football stadium(露天体育场)and here's a little desk where you can study. The bathroom and toilet are just opposite your door. Now I'll go and put the kettle on. ""Excuse me. What's a kettle? ""In England, we use a kettle to make hot water. We can then put the hot water in a teapot or use it to make coffee. "Rosa was happy with her new home, but she was a little puzzled (困惑). Perhaps her mother Maruja was right. The British were not normal people. They did not kiss when they met and they lived in large Victorian palaces. Their favorite drink was tea and they used strange metal kettles to make the water hot. What was she going to say to Elisabeth and Isaac? How could she make friends with two shy English children?Perhaps the answer was in the big, black psychology (心理学)book.11.It was Rosa's big day. W hich of the following is NOT mentioned in the passage? CA. Very often, an adult may not learn a foreign language so well.B. A child can completely absorb the fresh words and expressions hereceives.30. Y aser felt hurt because ___A____.A. he didn't understand the way Americans view friendshipB. Steve had cheated himC. Steve no longer studied with him in the same classD. Steve ignored him32. F rom the first paragraph we can infer that ____B____.A. Yaser had never had lunch with SteveB. Yaser and Steve had different views on friendshipC. It's not worth making friends with AmericansD. Steve was a dishonest man33. W hat's the reason for the way Americans view friendship? DA. Americans like to chat.B. Americans are false.C. Americans receive multicultural education.D. A ccording to the author, what is important in making a decision abouta profession? DA. Suggestion from a professor.B. Knowledge of the profession.C. Previous experience.D. Self-evaluation.38. T o find a good job, one must often have ___A______.A. both actual work experience and special training for the jobB. either actual work experience or special training for the jobC. self-evaluationD. special physical conditions39. K nowing your interests and abilities helps you__B__.A. talk with others about your jobB. decide which job fits youC. qualify for a jobD. listen to your teacher's advice40. (30 points)Passage 1Conservationists (资源保护者) may get a wrong number of the threatened animals such as elephants, say African and American researchers. The error takes place because of a weakness in the way they estimate animal number from the piles of dung (粪便) the creatures leave behind. The mistake could lead researchers to think that there aretwice as many elephants as there really are in some regions, according to Andrew Plumptre of the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) in New York. Biologist (生物学家) Katy Payne of Cornell University i n Ithaca, New York, agrees. “We really need to know elephant number and the evidence (证据) that we have is qu ite indirect,” says Payne.Counting elephants from planes is impossible in the vast rainforests of Central Africa, so researchers often estimate elephant number by counting dung piles in a given area. They also need to know the rate at which dung decays (腐化). Because it's quite difficult to decide these rates, however, researchers counting elephants in one region are likely to rely on standard decay rates set up elsewhere. But researchers at the WCS have found that these decay rates differ from region to region depending on the weather and environment. Using the wrong number can mislead the census (统计), says Plumptre. He and his colleague Anthony Chifu Nchanji studied decaying elephant dung in the forests of Banyang Wildlife Sanctuary (避难所) in southeast Cameroon. They found that the dung decayed between 55 and 65 percent more slowly than dung in the rainforests of neighboring Gabon. If researchers use decay rates from Gabon to count elephants in Cameroon, they would probably find more elephants than there are actually around. This could mean estimates in Cameroon are at least twice as high as those got from decay rates calculated locally, says Plumtre. He says that similar problems may also exist in other animal census studies that rely on indirect evidence.。

We all have to learn how to stop wasting our limited water. One of the steps we should take is to find ways of reusing it. Experiments have already been done in this field.Today in most large cities, fresh water is used only once, and then it runs to waste system. But it is possible to pipe the used water to a purifying (净化)factory. There it can be filtered (过滤) and treated with chemicals so that it can be used again, just as it were fresh from a spring. But even if every large city purified and reused its water, we still would not have enough. Then we could turn to the ocean s. All we’d have to do to make use of the seawater on earth is to get rid of the salt. All transportation and every machine in the world depend on it. The wheel is the simplest yet perhaps the most remarkable(卓越)of all inventions, because there are no wheels in nature – no living thing was ever created with wheels. How, then, did man come to invent the wheel? Perhaps some early hunters found that they could roll the carcass(屠宰后的畜体)of a heavy animal through the forest on logs(圆木)more easily than they could carry it. However, the logs themselves weighed a lot.It must have taken a great prehistoric(史前)thinker to imagine two thin slices of logs connected, at their centers by a string stick. This would roll along just as the logs did, yet be much lighter and easier to handle. Thus the wheel and axle(车轴)came into being and with them the first carts.11.The wheel is important because _________.A.it was man’s first real inventionB.all transportation depends on itC.every machine depends on itD.both B and C【批阅】回答正确!【答案】D12.The wheel is said to be _________.A.simpleplicatedC.strangeD.unusual【批阅】回答正确!【答案】A13.It was remarkable of man to invent the wheel because _________.A.it led to many other inventionsB.man had no use for it thenC.there were no wheels in natureD.all of the above【批阅】回答正确!【答案】C14.According to the passage, the wheel was probably invented by _________.A.a group of early huntersB.the first men on earthC.a great prehistoric thinkerD.the man who made the first cart【批阅】回答正确!【答案】C15.According to the passage, the first wheel may have been a _________.A.round piece of stoneB.heavy logC.piece of metalD.slice of log【批阅】回答正确!【答案】D语法词汇(共5小题,每小题4分,满分20分)16.Finding her car stolen, ________A.a policeman was asked to helpB.the area was searched thoroughlyC.it was looked for everywhereD.she hurried to a policeman for help【批阅】回答正确!【答案】D17.The managers discussed the plan that they would like to see ________ the next yearA.carry outB.carrying outC.carried outD.to carry out【批阅】回答正确!【答案】C18.________ with other children of the same age, Robert is very tall.paringB.To compareparedD.Being compared【批阅】回答正确!【答案】C19.He rushed into the room, his face ________ with sweat.A.coveringB.coveredC.to coverD.to be covered【批阅】回答正确!【答案】B20.Jimmy was run ________ by a car outside her house.A.onB.awayC.overD.out【批阅】回答正确!【答案】C完形填空(共10小题,每小题3分,满分30分)You may have heard of Osceola McCarty, an 88-year-old woman in Mississippi who had worked for over 75 years as a 21 woman. One day after she retired, she went to the bank and discovered that her small monthly 22 had grown to over。ç150,000. Then the barter(物物交换)system was replaced by coins, which still had real value since they were pieces of rare metal. Coins were followed by fiat money, paper notes that have value only because everyone agrees to accept them. Today electronic monetary(货币)systems are gradually being introduced that will transform (转换)money into even less tangible forms, reducing it to a series of “bits and bytes”, or units of computerized information, going between machines at the speed of light. Already, electronic fund transfer allows money to be instantly sent and received by different banks, companies, and countries through computers and telecommunications(⽆线通讯)devices.6.Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?A.International Banking PoliciesB.The History of Monetary ExchangeC.The Development of Paper CurrenciesD.Current Problems in the Economy【批阅】回答正确!【答案】B7.According to passage, which of the following was the earliest kind of exchange of wealth?A.Bartered goodsB.Fiat money(纸币)C.Coin currencyD.Intangible forms【批阅】回答正确!【答案】D8.The author mentions food, tools and precious metals and stones together because they are all _________./doc/06a3cc5a227916888486d7bb.html eful itemsB.articles of valueC.difficult things to obtainD.material objects【批阅】回答正确!9.According to the passage, coins once had real value as currency because they _________.A.represented a great improvement over barterB.permitted easy transportation of wealthC.were made of precious metalsD.could become collectors’ items【批阅】回答正确!【答案】C10.Which of the following statements about computerized monetary systems is NOT supported by the passage?A.They promote international trade.B.They allow very rapid money transfer.C.They are still limited to small transactions(交易).D.They are dependent on good telecommunications systems.【批阅】回答正确!【答案】CPassage 2In the old days, divers(潜⽔员)used to go down into the sea looking for ships that had sunk, because they hoped to find gold and jewels. Now divers still search for valuable things in sunken ships, but they also try to bring to the surface the ships themselves, or parts of them. The value of different kinds of metals has increased greatly over the last twenty or thirty years and even though a ship has been under the sea for many years, it may be worth a great deal. One famous sunken ship is the “Lusitania”, which sank off the southern coast of Ireland in 1915 with a loss of nearly, 1,500 lives. It has four huge propellers(推进器)made of an expensive metal. Today each of those propellers is worth $300,000 or more. The ship lying on the sea-bed has been bought by a man called John Light. He paid about $1,200,000 for the whole ship. He hopes to bring up those propellers and sell them. He also hopes to sell other parts of the ship, when he has brought them to the surface, for about $600,000.11.Divers today try to bring to the surface_________.A.gold and jewelsB.parts of shipsC.whole shipsD.all of the above【批阅】回答正确!【答案】D12.Divers try to bring up metals because _________.A.they have been in the sea for a long timeB.gold and jewels are not valuable thingsC.some kinds of metals are worth a lot of moneyD.it is easy to bring up metals【批阅】回答正确!13.The word “surface” in the passage means the _________.A.marketB.airC.top of a liquidD.sea【批阅】回答正确!【答案】C14.John Light hopes that he may be able to sell all the parts of the “Lusitania” for about _________.A.$12,000B.$300,000C.$ 1,200,000D.1,800,000【批阅】回答正确!【答案】C15.John Light bought the “Lusitania” _________.A.before 1915B.before it sankC.after it sankD.after they had brought up the propellers【批阅】回答正确!【答案】C语法词汇(共5⼩题,每⼩题4分,满分20分)16.Jane’s face suggested that she ________ ill, and her parents suggested that she ________a medical examination.A.be; would haveB.was; haveC.should be; hadD.was; has【批阅】回答正确!【答案】B17.If you had seen a doctor yesterday, you ________ well now.A.areB.might beC.had beenD.would have been【批阅】回答正确!【答案】B18.Cleaning women in big cities usually are ________ by the hour.A.payB.payingC.paidD.to pay【批阅】回答正确!【答案】C19.I ________ ten minutes to decide whether I should reject the offer.A.gaveB.was givenC.was givingD.had given【批阅】回答正确!【答案】B20.We'll ________ with the presentations after lunch.A.go upB.go downC.go outD.go onA.atB.inC.onD.for【批阅】回答正确!【答案】C22A.self-serviceB.self-centeredC.self-relianD.self-confidence 【批阅】回答正确!【答案】D 23A.as good asB.as well asC.as far asD.as long as【批阅】回答正确!【答案】B24A.waitingB.standingC.lyingD.nearing【批阅】回答正确!【答案】D25A.LetB.TakeC.HaveD.Get【批阅】回答正确!【答案】B26A.madeB.appliedC.includedD.developed【批阅】回答正确!【答案】A 27A.retellB.reviewC.reviseD.remind【批阅】回答正确!【答案】B 28A.ifB.whyC.howD.when【批阅】回答正确!【答案】A 29A.eveningB.dayC.morningD.afternoon【批阅】回答正确!【答案】C 30A.peaceB.troubleC.sorrowD.excitement。
