ABird migration is described as the regular, seasonal movement of bird populations from one place to another and back again. The longer days and rich food of the northern summer provide greater chances for birds to feed their young. The longer daylight hours and enormous food resources allow birds to lay larger eggs than those of related non-migratory species that remain in the tropics all year round. As the days shorten in autumn and the breeding period is over, the birds return to warmer regions where the available food supply differs little with the seasons changing. The advantages of migration make up for the high stress, physical exertion(消耗), and other risks of the migration.Day length is the primary environmental factor that encourages birds to prepare for migration. They have an increased appetite which results in weight gaining, giving them the fat reserves that provide energy for their migratory flight. They also show more activity at night, which is when most birds migrate. While the length of day is the primary reason for migration, birds also respond to temperature changes. For example, if a spring is late and the temperature is lower than normal, birds delay migration; if a spring is early, birds also begin migration early. The timing of the migratory cycle must allow birds to arrive on the breeding site so that there is time tobuild a breeding place, mate, lay the eggs, and hatch the young before the rich food is available to feed the young in the nest. Similarly, if birds wait until the climate in their northern breeding grounds becomes tolerable(可忍受的), there will be no time togain the necessary weight that provides the energy needed for their southbound migration.1. Why do birds migrate to the north in spring?A The temperature in the south has risen.B. They like traveling and enjoy the journey.C. The summer there is warmer than that in the south.D. The environment there is more suitable for them to feed their baby birds.2. What are the two factors that cause birds to migrate?A. Day length and food supply.B. Night length and high stress.C. Temperature changes and daylength.D. Food supply and temperature changes.3. Which can be the best title for the text?A. Birds' LifeB. Birds' MigrationC. Birds' Breeding HabitsD. Birds' Living EnvironmentBIt was the first day of spring here but it didn't feel like it. The COVID-19 epidemic (流行病) was sweeping the globe and everywhere there were feelings of fear and loneliness. “Social Distancing” had become the new norm. Here the schools had been closed, the restaurant dining rooms had been shut, and people had been told to work from home whenever they could. Even the sheltered workshop where my oldest son worked had been closed until further notice. People had made a run on the stores and large areas of the shelves were bare. On the news the numbers of the sick and dead continued to rise. It felt like there was a weight on the souls of everyone in the world. My family were staying at home as much as possible and as I looked out of my window I wondered how long this crisis would last. It was then, however, that I saw something that lifted that weight off of my soul, made me smile, and made my heart feel happy again. On the street below my house there was an old friend of mine from high school who was a teacher there. With him was my younger son's former aide from the high school as well. They were delivering the school lunches door to door to the hungry children who were stuck at home. Watching them made me think of something everyone's childhood television neighbor, Mr. Roger's once said: "In the bad times, always look for the helpers."I have no doubt that this crisis will pass as all the crisis before. But it is our choice on whether it brings out the best in us or the worst in us. Let it bring out the best in you. Use it to strengthen your faith. Use it to free yourself from fear. Use it to grow kinder, more giving, and more loving. Become a helper to all those in need and you will be a happy person today and all the days to come.4. Why didn't the author like the first day of spring?A. He had to work at home instead of at office.B. There wasn't social distance between each other.C. There was an epidemic everywhere in the world.D. His own company had been closed for a long time.5. How did people feel in the face of the epidemic?A. Disappointed.B. TenseC. Confident.D. Cheerful.6. What made the author happy?A. Seeing someone delivering lunches from door to door.B. Talking with his old friend in the street.C. Watching a childhood television at home.D. Staying together with his family.7. What do Mr. Roger's words actually mean?A. It's not necessary for us to find helpers in bad times.B. In good times we needn't do much to help others.C. We should ask more people to help us in bad times.D. We are supposed to help each other in bad times.CTen years ago, I set out to examine luck. I wanted to know why some people were always in the right place at the right time, while others consistently experienced ill fortune. I placed advertisements in national newspapers asking for people who felt consistently lucky or unlucky. Hundreds of extraordinary men and women volunteered for my research. Over the years I have interviewed them, monitored their lives and had them take part in various experiments. In one of the experiments, I gave both lucky and unlucky people a newspaper, asking them to look through it and tell me how many photographs were inside. I had secretly placed a large message halfway through the newspaper, saying, “Tell the experimenter you have seen this and you will win $50.” This message took up half of the page and was written in type that was more than two inches high. It was staring everyone in the face, but the unlucky people tended to miss it and the lucky people tended to spot it.Unlucky people are generally more nervous than lucky people, and this anxiety affects their ability to notice the unexpected. As a result, they miss opportunities because they are too focused on looking for something else. They go to gatherings concentrating on finding their perfect partners and miss opportunities to make good friends. They look through newspapers determined to find certain types of job advertisements and miss other types of jobs.Lucky people are more relaxed and open, and therefore see what is there rather than just what they are looking for. My research eventually showed that lucky people are skilled at noticing opportunities, make lucky decisions by listening to their intuition (直觉), are open to new experiences, and adopt a never-say-die attitude that transforms bad luck into good luck.8. What’s the purpose of the author’s research?A. To discover what luck means to people.B. To find lucky people and unlucky people.C. To distinguish between good luck and bad luck.D. To figure out why people are always lucky or unlucky.9. Why did the unlucky people miss the message in the experiment?A. There was too much information to be read in detail.B. They were too focused on looking for photographs.C. It took too much time to go through newspapers.D. The words were too small to be noticed.10. What leads to lucky people’s good fortune?A. Their ability to spot opportunities.B. Their ability to become relaxed.C. Their ability to communicate.D. Their ability to make friends.11. What’s the key message of the last paragraph?A. What lucky people are looking for.B. How lucky people generate good luck.C. What lucky people can do with opportunities.D How lucky people transform bad luck into good luck.DCigarettes aren’t just harmful when they’re being smoked. Even when cigarette ends go out and are cold, new research has found they continue to give off harmful chemicals in the air. In the first 24 hours alone, scientists say a used cigarette end will produce 14 percent of the nicotine (尼古丁) that an actively burning cigarette would produce. While most of these chemicals are released within a day of being put out,an analysis for the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) found the level of nicotine fell by just 50% five days later.“I was ly surprised,” since environmental engineer Dustin Poppendieck from the United States NationalInstitute of Standards and Technology (NIST). “The numbers are significant and could have important impacts when cigarette ends are dealt with indoors or in cars. While much attention has been paid to the health influence of first-hand, second-hand and now third-hand smoking, it is not the case when it comes to the actual cigarette end of the matter.”To measure emissions (排放) from this forgotten thing, Poppendieck and his team placed 2,100 cigarettes that were recently put out inside a special room. Once the ends weresealed away, the team measured eight chemicals commonly produced by cigarettes, four of which the FDA have their eye on for being harmful or potentially so.After setting the room’s temperature, the researchers tested how emissions changed under certain conditions. When the air temperature of the room was higher, for instance, they noticed the ends produced these chemicals at higher rates. This finding might discourage those who want to leave ashtrays (烟灰缸) out for days ata time, especially in the heat.12. What do the researchers say about cigarette ends?A They contain little nicotine.B. They produce no nicotine five days later.C. They give off nicotine for days.D. They create as much nicotine as burning cigarettes.13. What do Poppendieck’s words suggest?A. First-hand smoking does most harm.B. The findings are within his expectation.C. Cigarettes should be dealt with indoors.D. Health influence of cigarette ends is ignored.14. Which word best describes the author’s attitude to not cleaning ashtrays for days?A.

AHow often one hears children wishing they were grown-ups and old people wishing they were young again. Each age has its pleasures and its pains, and the happiest person is the one who enjoys what each age gives him without wasting his time in useless regrets.Childhood is a time when there are few responsibilities to make life difficult. If a child has good parents, he is fed, looked after and loved, whatever he may do. It is impossible that he will ever again in his life be given so much without having to do anything in return. In addition, life is always presenting new things to the child — things that have lost their interest for older people because they are too well-known. But a child has his parents. He is not so free to do what he wishes to do; he is continually being told not to do things or being punished for what he has done wrong. When the young man starts to earn his own living, he can no longer expect others to pay for his food, his clothes, and his room, but has to work if he wants to live fortably. If he spends most of his time playing about in the way that he used to as a child, he will go hungry. And if he breaks the laws of society as he used to break the laws of his parents, he maygo to prison. If, however, he works hard, keeps out of trouble and has good health, he can have the great happiness of building up for himself his own position in society.1. According to the second paragraph, the writer thinks that __.A. life for a child is paratively easyB. a child is always loved whatever he doesC. if much is given to a child, he must do something in returnD. only children are interested in life2. After a child grows up, he __.A. will have little time playingB. has to be successful in finding a jobC. can still ask for help in time of troubleD. should be able to take care of himself3. The underlined word "responsibilities" in the second paragraph means__________.A. dutiesB. jobsC. suggestionsD. desires4. The main idea of the passage is _________ .A. life is not enjoyable since each age has some painsB. young men can have the greatest happiness if they work hardC. childhood is the most enjoyable time in one's lifeD. one is the happiest if he can make good use of each age in his lifeBWhen was the last time you lost something? What was it?According to a recent survey, we spend about ten minutes a day looking for lost things. Over an average lifetime, this adds up to an incredible 3,680 hours (or 153 days). Is there anything we can do about it?The study of 3,000 adults was carried out by home insurance pany Esure. They found that mobile phones and car keys were the most frequently lost items. Other things on the list included: house keys, bills, sunglasses, wallets, bank cards, watches, jewellery (particularly rings and earrings). So, what’s going on? “Most blame it on a busy lifestyle,” says Nikki Sellers, th e head of Esure. Others say it’s the fault of spouses (配偶) or children for not putting things back where they belong. A few admitted to untidiness, absent-mindedness and a poor memory, with some wishing they were more organized. What’s the solution? “Yo u need to choose a particular place for something and always put it back there,” said Nikki Sellers. “And you need to make sure everyone else in the house knows where to put it back too. You also need to keep your house tidy, label boxes clearly and find a place near the front door for all the items that you need in the morning.A good idea would be to have a shelf there with a bowl for your keys, purse, wallet and anything else.” she added. If you are still having trouble finding things, don’t worry —things could be a lot worse: fourteen people in the survey said they spent over an hour every day looking for lost items. Surely you can’t be as bad as that!5. According to the survey, which do people lose most frequently?A. House keys.B. Cell phones.C. Bank cards.D. Sunglasses.6. The majority of people surveyed think that they lose something because of _______.A. lack of organization.B. their bad memoryC. the fault of their family membersD. their busy life7. From the text we learn that ________.A. many people in the survey spend over an hour looking for the lost itemsB. Nikki Sellers suggests always putting things back where they wereC. the author is quite worried about those who have trouble finding thingsD. a shelf near the front door is a must if you are to avoid losing moneyCExperts say it is not easy to get used to life in a new culture. “ Culture shock” is the term these experts use when talking about the feelings that people have in a new environment. There are three stages of culture shock, say the experts. In the first stage, the newers like their new environment. Then, when the fresh experience dies, they begin to hate the city, the country, the people and everything else. In the last stage, the newers begin to adjust to their surroundings and, as a result, enjoy their life more. There are some obvious factors in culture shock. The weather may be unpleasant. The customs may be different. The public service systems---the telephone, post office ,or transportation --may be difficult to work out. The simplest things seem to be big problems. The language may be difficult.Who feels culture shock? Everyone does in this way or that. But culture shock surprises most people. Very often the people having the worst culture shock are those who never had any difficulties in their home countries and were successful in their munity. ing to a new country, these people find they do not have the same established positions. They find themselves without a role, almost without an identity. They have to build a new self-image.Culture shock causes a feeling of disorientation (迷惘). This feelingmay be homesickness. When homesick, people feel like staying inside all the time. They want to protect themselves from the strange environment, and create an escape inside their room for a sense of security. This escape does solve the problem of culture shock for the short term, but it does nothing to make the person familiar with the culture. Getting to know the new environment and gaining experience--these are the long-term solutions to the problem of culture shock.8.According to the passage, the more successful you are at home, _________________.A. the fewer difficulties you may have abroadB. the more difficulties you may have abroadC. the more money you will earn abroadD. the less homesick you will feel abroad9.Which of the following is NOT right according to the passage?A. “Culture shock” is a term used to describe the feelings that peopleexperience in a new environmentB. In the second stage of “ Culture shock”, people may hate the lifein the new environmentC. When you are homesick, you had better not stay at home all the timeD. Every one of us doesn’t feel culture shock in this way or that10.What is the main idea of the last paragraph?A. Escape unfamiliar environmentB. The feeling of homesicknessC. I want to marry for love, NOT for money.” “ But why not marry someone you love who has money?” he asked. “Rich men are materialistic(物质主义的). I’d rather marry a poor man who loves me,” I said a nd he gave in.And as we went on, with my family growing, I learned why my father put such importance on money. We had to cover the rent, car, electricity, food, and medical bills. We were under lot of pressure. The worries over whether we would be asked to move out or if we had the money to wash our clothes at the Laundromat this week made me question if I did the right thing by marrying a “poor” man.I realized that I had entered the ranks of the poor. And another young mother triedto “help” me out by connecting me with a friend who stole baby clothes from a department store. “ For a small cut,” she said, “ I could return my ‘purchase’(购买的东西)for cash.” It made me sick. How poor w as I?I had a college education but wasn’t using it. I insisted on not missing a minute of our children’s childhood and it came at a price. My husband was working as hard as he could and it wasn’t enough. But somehow we made it.The kids grew. Today, we look back and see the great values gained by going through those hard years. My children are not materialistic. They never thought they were poor growing up because we always managed to give a little bit of food, money, or clothes to the “poor”. They were satisfied with the simple things in life that e free such as a beach day or a horse back ride from their dad.We had our worries, but we still treasured our very favorite part of the day when we’d nest (栖息地)under the covers and talked about our future, the kids and how much we loved each other. Sure our financial(财政的) troubles caused a lot of fights, but we didn’t leave each other. We began to live a better life. We moved to a better munity(社区)with good schools for the kids. (共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)AFear may be felt in the heart as well as in the head, according to a study that has found a link between the cycles of a beating heart and the chance of someone feeling fear.Tests on healthy volunteers found that they were more likely to feel a sense of fear at the moment when their hearts are contracting(收缩) and pumping blood around their bodies, compared with the point when the heartbeat is relaxed.Scientists say the results suggest that the heart is able to influence how the brain responds to a fearful event, depending on which point it is at in its regular cycle of contraction and relaxation.Sarah Garfinkel at the Brighton and Sussex Medical School said:"Our study shows for the first time that the way in which we deal with fear is different depending on when we see fearful pictures in relation to our heart."The study tested 20 healthy volunteers on their reactions to fear as they were shown pictures of fearful faces.Dr Garfinkel said,"The study showed that fearful faces are better noticed when the heart is pumping than when it is relaxed. Thus our hearts can also affect what we see and what we don't see-and guide whether we see fear."To further understand this relationship, the scientists also used a brain scanner(扫描仪) to show how the brain influences the way the heart changes a person's feeling of fear."We have found an important mechanism by which the heart and brain ‘speak' to each other to change our feelings and reduce fear,"Dr Garfinkel said."We hope that by increasing our understanding about how fear is dealt with and ways that it could be reduced,we may be able to develop more successful treatments for anxiety disorders, and also for those who may be suffering from serious stress disorder."21.What is the finding of the study?A.One's heart affects how he feels fear.B.Fear is a result of one's relaxed heartbeat.C.Fear has something to do with one's health.D.One's fast heartbeats are likely to cause fear.22.The study was carried out by analyzing________.A.volunteers' heartbeats when they saw terrible picturesB.the time volunteers saw fearful pictures and their health conditionsC.volunteers' reactions to horrible pictures and data from their brain scansD.different pictures shown to volunteers and their heartbrain communication23.Which of the following is closest in meaning to"mechanism" in Paragraph 6?A.Order.B.System.C.Machine.D.Treatment.24.This study may contribute to________.A.treating anxiety and stress betterB.explaining the cycle of fear and anxietyC.finding the key to the heartbrain communicationD.understanding different fears in our hearts and headsBA popular saying goes, "Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me." However, that's not really true. Words have the power to build us up or knock us down. It doesn't matter if the words come from someone else' or ourselves —the positive and negative effects are just as lasting. We all talk to ourselves sometimes. We're usually too shy to admit it, though. In fact, more and more experts believe talking to ourselves out loud is a healthy habit. This "self-talk" helps us encourage ourselves, remember things, solve problems, and calm ourselves down. Be aware, though, that as much as 77% of self-talk tends to be negative. So in order to stay positive, we should only speak words of encouragement to ourselves. We should also be quick to give ourselves a pat on the back. The next time you finish a project, do well in a test, or finally clean your room, join me in saying "Good job!"!Often, words come out of our mouths without thinking about the effect they will have. But we should be aware that our words cause certain responses in others. For example, when returning an item to a store, we might use warm, friendly language during the exchange. And the clerk will probably respond in a similar manner or harsh (刻薄的)and critical language will most likely cause the clerk to be defensive.Words have power because of their lasting effect. Many of us regret something we once said. And we remember unkind words said to us! Before speaking, we should always ask ourselves: Is it loving? Is it needed? If what we want to say doesn't pass this test, then it's better left unsaid.Words have power: both positive and negative. Those around us receive encouragement when we speak positively. We can offer hope, build self-esteem(自尊) and encourage others to do their best. Negative words destroy all those things. Will we use our words to hurt or to heal? The choice is ours.25.The main idea of the first paragraph is that______.A.words have a lasting effect on us.B.positive words give us confidenceC.negative words may let us downD.nothing but words will hurt us26.There is no need for us to feel shy when we talk to ourselves because _____.A.it does no harm to have "self-talk" when we are aloneB.talking to ourselves always gives us courageC.almost everybody has the habit of talking to themselvesD.we can benefit from talking to ourselves27.The underlined part in the third paragraph means that we should also timely______.A.criticize ourselvesB.praise ourselvesC.relax ourselvesD.amaze ourselves28.The author would probably hold the view that_____.A.encouraging words surely lead to harsh offersB.people will always remember friendly wordsC.it is better to think twice before talking to othersD.negative words may help us make more progressCWhen most of us look at our hands, we might notice that we need to clean, or stop biting our fingernails, and that's about it. But if you ask a doctor, he can see a whole lot more. Everything from poor diet and stress to serious kidney (肾) problems can be revealed by a glance at your fingernails. There are about 30 different nail signs that can be associated with medical issues, though may indicate more than one problem, according to Dr.Amy Derick, a clinical instructor of dermatology at Northwestern University. Here are five of the things a doctor can tell about your health based on your fingernails.People who aren't eating well and lack vitamin or dietary may have thinner than normal nails, which are more likely to break.Horizontal (水平的) lines are associated with serious physical stress. They frequently occur in people who have gone through chemotherapy(化疗).They can also occur after some illnesses, injuries, or with severe malnourishment(营养不良).Interestingly, there may be an altitude connection too. They've also been found in people who dove 1,000 feet and others who participated in an Everest exploration. Vertical (垂直的)lines, however, are generally not such a big deal. Some people are more genetically prone to them than others, but they're commonly associated with aging. When people lack iron, their nails can turn spoon-like. Instead of curving down and covering the finger normally, they 'll start to rise up on the sides and front, like the part of a spoon that holds liquid.Kidney and liver problems can create "half-and-half nails", where one part of the nail is white and the other part dark or pink, according to Derick.Doctors note that because disease diagnosis is complex and some symptoms can be associated with different diseases, you should always see a medical professional if you are concerned about something you notice.29. What is the main idea of the passage?A. Doctors can tell us something about our health by looking at our nails.B. We should see a doctor if we find nails in bad condition.C. A famous doctor in the USA conducted an interesting research.D. If we don't want to get ill, we need to clean and stop biting our fingernails.30. If we don't eat well or regularly, our fingernails may ________.A. become harder than normal nails.B. become thinner than normal nails.C. become "half-and-half" nails.D. have horizontal and vertical lines.31. Who will have horizontal lines on the nails ?A. A cancer patient who has received normal treatment.B. Hungry African children suffering from severe malnourishment.C. An explorer who had reached Zhangjiajie in Hunan Province.D. A patient with serious illness, like kidney and liver problems.32. Which of the following best describes the nails that show people lack iron?A. The nails are thinner and more likely to break.B. The nails will curve down and cover the fingers.C. The nails will start to rise up on the sides and front.D. The nails will change their colors on the surface.DLast Saturday,my 8-year-old son,Chase, and I were shopping in a supermarket. Chase was busy weighing each new bag of vegetables I collected. I handed him a bag of tomatoes and he walked over to the scale and waited patiently in line. Suddenly, an old man walked up behind Chase, and stepped before him, bumping Chase out of the way. Chase looked shocked and scared. Seeing this I left my shopping cart and walked over to Chase, saying loudly,"Are you all right, honey? I saw what that man did to you. That was very, very wrong."When the man finished weighing his bag,he turned around too quickly and all of his onions spilled out of his bag and onto the dirty floor. The three of us froze for a moment. Then I got down on my hands and knees and started collecting onions while the old man accepted them from my hands and put them back into his bag. After Chase and I retrieved all the onions, the old man walked away. We didn't discuss the event until we got back in the car.On the way home,Chase said through tears,"Mommy,I've a frustrating day. That man cut right in front of me. And we had to help him pick up his onions! Why did we do that? That didn't make any sense."I took a deep breath and said," Chase, that man seemed to have a very bad mood today. We should forgive him. I was also angry with that man for treating you rudely. I really wanted to kick him. But doing that doesn't make any sense. If we hadn't helped that old man, we might have felt good for a moment, but then I bet we would have felt really sorry for a long time. You and I have a lot of love to share. Maybe that man doesn't have much. People who behave badly still need love. ''A cheerful smile appeared on Chase's face. It was a smile of a promise kept. It was the best smile I had ever seen. God, it was a good moment. It may have been my best mommy moment ever.33.What did the old man do?A.He jumped the queue.B.He hit Chase on the head.C. He hurried away without paying.D.He ran into Chase suddenly.34.What can we infer from the passage?A.The author was not angry at all with what the old man had done.B.The old man was very sorry for what he had done to Chase.C. At last,Chase learned a valuable life lesson from the event.D.Chase didn't help the author pick up spilled onions for the old man.35.Which of the following words can best describe the author?A.Narrow-minded.B.Broad-minded.C.Strong-willed.D.Bad-tempered.第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

Sunday’s wedding was the first time a marriage had been led by a robot, according to manufacturer, Kokoro Co.“Please lift the bride’s veil (面纱),” the robot said in a tiny voi ce, waving its arms in the air as the newly-married couple kissed in front of about 50 guests. The wedding took place at a restaurant in Hibiya Park in central Tokyo, where the IFairy wore flowers and directed a rooftop ceremony. Wires led out from beneath it to a black curtain a few feet away, where a man clicked commands into a computer.Japan has one of the most advanced robotics industries in the world, with the government actively supporting the field for future growth. Industrial models in factories are now standard, but recently Japanese companies have been making a push to inject robots into everyday life.Honda makes a walking childshaped robot, and other firms have developed robots to entertain the elderly or play baseball. Not only do you wake up bright-eyed and feeling rested, but your mind is more alert and functions better. But a new scientific study also suggests that getting undisturbed sleep could lower your risk of developing Alzheimer’s (老年痴呆症) later in life.Researchers from Uppsala University in Sweden say their findings, published in the Alzheimer’s and Dementia journal, suggest that improved sleep quality as you get older could help protect men from the memory-robbing disease. “We demonstrate that men with self-reported sleep disturbances run a 1.5-fold higher risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease than those without reports of sleep disturbances during a 40-year follow-up period,”lead researcher, Christian Benedict, said in a statement. “The later the self-reported sleep disturbance was found, the higher the risk was for developing Alzheimer’s disease.”The study followed over 1,500 men, who were 50 at the start of the study, for 40 years. Researchers looked for the incidence of dementia (痴呆) at follow-up intervals as well as the subjects’reports of their sleep disturbances. The highest risk of developing dementia was found among men who reported sleep disturbances starting at age 70. While the risk of developing Alzheimer’s was around 50 percent higher for men with sleep issues, it was also a third higher for dementia in general. The sleep-dementia link has been widely studied by Alzheimer’s researchers. Another study conducted by Uppsala University researchers pointed to sleep deprivation (剥夺) with an increase of molecules (分子) in the brain, which are found in instances of brain damage. An increase in these molecules was seen after just one night of missed sleep. In 2013, researchers at Johns Hopkins University found that not only a short sleepduration but also low sleep quality was seen to increase the risk of Alzheimer’s in older people. They say the key is to instill the value of getting adequate, restful sleep in older adults.32.
