Americans view the family as a group whose primary purpose is to advance the happiness of individual members. In contrast to many other cultures, the primary responsibility of the American family member is not to advance the family as a group, either socially or economically. What would be best for the family is not usually considered to be as important as what would be best for the individual. With freedom comes the responsibility to care for oneself, for it is the freedom of choice that carries with it the responsibility: to accept the consequences of the choices. Many Americans give their children a lot of freedom because they want them to be independent and self-reliant. Along with the American emphasis on individual freedom, the belief in equality between parents and children also has had a strong effect on the family.作为美国文化价值体系的一个重要组成部分,"个人主义"受到大多数美国人的推崇。

You can be the master of the page, putting up yourfavorite hot sports, news, pop music and latest Hollywood movies, all of which can be found quite easily on the net. But what if the services expose your personal data like birthday, health condition, bank account, ID card and even your personal shortcomings to commercial websites who will use them to strengthen e-marketing?Worse, some e-business players may pass you by and sell your personal data to other firms to get a profit. The rapid growth of the Internet has led to individual privacy abuse. It will be a headache in the future. Cases are showing up recently that some unethical players earn big money from selling individual profiles on-line. A leading US-based net firm has been spotted using technology to track down every action netzens(网民)make while shopping through its website.Zhang Jing, a 27-year-old staff member at a local lifestyle website, woke up one morning and found her emails were stuffed with junk emails, unwelcome on-line commercial ads and a large amount of sexual stuff. “My mailbox gets full of this awful stuff and I feel sick,” said Zhang. “Laws should be set up as soon as possible, otherwise the problem will get worse.”However, as Internet goes beyond national borders, protection efforts will be limited without global cooperation. It needs global commitment and a wide respect for the rules of the game. Meanwhile, experts have called for the development of technology and software such as a firewall to protect netzens’privacy. Software that can track down firms who are using technology to follow on-line shopping activities and bar firms who abuse personal data will be available on the market soon. Firms plotting to make an illegal profit form the abuses will shoot themselves in the foot in the end and netzens themselves should be well aware of the issue and resort to legal actions to solve the problem.11. What is the danger of owning a web page of your own, according to the passage?A. Your ID card might get lost.B. Your personal data might be exposed.C. Some commercial websites may use your web page.D. Your shortcomings can be shown on the web page too.12. In the second paragraph, in the sentence “It will be a headache in the future”, the pronoun“It” refers to ______.A. the InternetB. the rapid growth of the internetC. the e-businessD. the individual privacy abuse by net firms13. According to Zhang Jing, the problem of junk emails could get worse unless ______.A. one-line commercial ads are unwelcomeB. laws are establishedC. netzens are fully aware of itD. software is used14. From the passage we understand that ______.A. it is illegal for net firms to sell netzens’ personal data to other firms to get a profitB. it is all right for some unethical players to earn some money from selling individualprofiles on-lineC. it is normal for a computer virus to wake up one morning and stuff your emails withjunk mailD. it goes beyond national borders when net firms track down netzens shopping on-line15. To protect people’s privacy on the Internet, we should______.A. cooperate internationally and develop technology to limit the InternetB. wait to see the firms making illegal profit from the abuses shoot themselves in thefootC. be well aware of the issue and resort to legal actionsD. both A and CPassage 2Among the more interesting things to observe as you travel the world are the ways in which people conduct themselves at parties. In some countries men and women move to opposite ends of the room and talk to one another; in others they sit in large chairs around the edge of the room and talk only to the people on either side of them, or silently eat and observe the scene. As you would imagine, Americans move about a great deal at parties. At small gatherings they may sit down, but as soon as there are more people than chairs in the room –or better yet, a little before this point – you would see first one and then another make some excuses to get to his feet (to fetch a drink or greet a friend or open a window) until soon everyone is standing, moving around, chatting with one group and then another. Sitting becomes inactive beyond a certain point. We expect people to move about and be “self-starters.”It is quite normal for Americans to introduce themselves; they will move around a room stopping to talk wherever they like, introducing themselves and their companion. If this happens, you are expected to reply by giving your name and introducing the person with you. After such an informal introduction, you talk together for a little while, here come those questions: “Are you new here?”“How long have you been in America?”Within a moment or two, you will have struck some common ground, conversation will move along for a while, and then either couple can feel free to say something informal like: “Well, it’s been nice to meet you” or “I hope we see you again soon.” This is the signal for both couples to say their good-byes and move off to another group. The basic rule at big parties is: don’t stay in one place for too long. Pick out people you think look interesting, then go to talk to them. Women should not gather themselves in a group with each other or hide themselves away in a corner. They too should move around theroom either with their husbands, or with friends or alone, whichever they prefer, unless they are strategically located (and attractive!) so that people keep coming up to them. The point of a party in this country is to meet and talk with people; the fact that you are all there together under your host’s roof is in itself a form of introduction in our view. As a result anyone can feel free to talk to anyone else.16. The possible title for this passage might be ______.A. Parties in the WorldB. Differences of Parties in Different CountriesC. Parties in AmericaD. A Party I Attended in America17. According to the author, the major difference between an American party and that inother countries lies in the fact that ______.A. Americans move about a great deal at partiesB. Americans never sit down at partiesC. women usually come with their husbands to a partyD. women and men talk in different groups18. Americans expect ______ at a party.A. people to stop talking and observe the sceneB. women to move around alone to attract peopleC. people to find some excuses to stand upD. to introduce themselves and feel free to talk19. In the second paragraph, the sentence “… you will have struck some common ground”means you will have ______.A. struck together the ground that both of you are standing onB. met each other so unexpectedly that you hit each other to the groundC. shaken hands and touched each other as ordinary people usually doD. talked about something that both of you are interested in and like to talk about20. The boy had no clothes on and was judged to be ten years old by some experts. He did not walk straight up like a human being, but with both his hands and feet touching the ground. The boy could not speak but howled like a wolf. He did not eat any cooked food but raw meat such as hare, deer, or goat meat. He knew nothing about the relationships among human families. Finally the doctor won the boy’s trust, and the boy started to obey him. After many long years of devoted and patient instruction, the doctor managed to get the boy to dress himself in clothes and feedhimself as a human being does.
