1. True heroes are all around us.Some help others, and others are simply good role model. My hero is my brother﹣Thomas. When Thomas and I were little, we used to go to the playground a lot. Kids would be scared of him and ask, "Is your arm broken? "Thomas would respond by explaining what happened, he was born without the left arm. If they ran away, he wouldn't let it bother him.Thomas is expert at both cross﹣country(越野跑)and track. He is a 4: 46 miler, which with the setback he has makes it an even greater accomplishment. Missing an arm affects his balance, which affects his leg drive. The work he has put in, however, has made up for this.He practices so hard that anything short of success would seem a disappointment. Thomas used to play baseball like it was a religion. His idol was Jim Abbott, a pitcher(投球手)for the California Angels.Abbott was a very good pitcher who only had one arm."I looked up to Abbott because I saw what I could achieve." Thomas said.Thomas had a lot of trouble giving up baseball for track because he felt like he was taking the easy wayout, though he liked track more. One of Thomas' best friends, Brad didn't even notice Thomas only had one arm for a few weeks after meeting him.He carried himself so confidently. So I felt okay admitting that I hadn't noticed, said Brad. Not only is Thomas a confident person who is not ashamed of his arm, he is often the center of attention in sports and school.Thomas seems to have accepted his disability.I see it as more of a difficulty, and difficulties can be overcome.Sometimes, if you try hard enough, you can overcome impossible things. As the great distance runner Steve Prefontaine said, "________(1)Which of the following words best describe Thomas?________A Courageous and modest.B Determined and religious.C Confident and strong ﹣willed.D Energetic and changeable..(2)Why did Thomas give up baseball for track?________A Because he had a preference for track.B Because his idol encouraged him to change.C Because he thought track was easier for him.D Because he couldn't play baseball with single arm..(3)The underlined sentence in the last paragraph is intended to remind us________.A giving is receivingB nothing is impossibleC hard work leaves noregrets D difficulties are gifts from God.2. We've all been there, running for a bus or train on a cold morning only to find that our nose is also running! Grab some tissues and learn the science behind the phenomenon known as "skier's nose."A nose like a running tap in winter is business as usual for many people.People call it"skier's nose".In a study, researchers found that 96 percent of people surveyed reported experiencing some degree of the condition.Apparently, getting a runny nose in cold weather is a bodily defense reaction. That's because the nose has two main purposes: 1)to ________ bacteria so they don't reach our lungs, and 2)to warm and humidify(加湿)the air before it reaches our lungs. Our airways are lined with tiny hairs known as ciliA.In the nose, these cilia wave back and forth to remove our mucus(黏液)so that bacteria can be blocked out.In cold weather the cilia are slowed. When cilia slow, bacteria remain in place and multiply, and this is why people get sick in winter. Not that the nose isn't trying to keep you healthy. All that running nose experience is the nose working overtime to produce more liquid to help move bacteria along. To help it out, experts say that you can try physically warming your nose: Rub your hands together, and then breathe into cupped hands or draw in steam from hot green tea and drink it, as green tea helps accelerate the growth and functioning of cilia. Our nose runs in winter for one more purpose, which is to fight against the drier outside (and inside)air. In winter, or when it's cold outside, the air is much drier than in summer. Our noses respond by producing more liquid to help humidify the air to a level our bodies need, and that's when it starts to run out of the end of our nose.(1)What does the underlined word "filter" probably mean in the third paragraph?________A Kill.B Prevent.C Defend.D Trap..(2)What can we know about "cilia"?________A They only exist in the nose.B They stop working in winter.C They can sweep away mucus.D They help break down bacteria..(3)Which of the following is the best title for the text?________A When Do You Have A Running Nose?B What Are the Purposes of Yournose? C How Can You Deal With D Why Does Your Nose Run When It's Cold?.3. If you grew up in a household that had its fair hare of book shelves, it might say something positive about your personality now that you're all grown up.This new study found that people who grew up in book﹣filled homes have higher reading, math, and technological skills. The researchers analyzed data featuring 160, 000 adults (ages 25 to 6)across 31 nations. All participants were asked how many books there were in their home when they were 16 years old. They chose from a series of alternatives ranging from "10 or less" to "more than 500."If a household held at least 80 books.then participants went, on to display the average rate of literacy and numeracy(认字和计算), The rate of literacy continued to increase in parallel to the number of books a household contained until the rate didn't increase from 350 books onwards.Furthermore, young teenagers who grew up around books were shown to have the same levels of literacy and numeracy as university graduates who had only grown up around a few books.Literacy was clarified as "the ability to read effectively to participate in society and achieve personal goals." Participants took tests that "captured a range of basic through advancedcomprehension skills, from reading brief texts for a single piece of information to synthesizing(合成)information from complex texts." Numeracy tests measured the "ability to use mathematical concepts in everyday life, " while IT﹣related tests "assessed the ability to use digital technology to communicate with others, as well as togather, analyze, and synthesize information, "The results suggest those books made a long﹣term difference, "Growing up with home libraries improves adult skills in these areas beyond the benefits from parental education, or one's own educational or occupational attainment, " the researchers report. Not surprisingly, the biggest effect was on reading ability."The total effects of home library size on literacy are large everywhere, " the researchers report.(1)What can we learn from the new study?________A Homes filled with books do much benefit to one's growth.B One's literacy and numeracy are finally shaped at the age of 16.C All participants need to have ten lo more than 500 books at home.D Those reading a lot are more competent than university graduates..(2)What is paragraph 4 mainly about?________A The benefit of literacy, numeracy and IT ability.B The measurement of literacy, numeracy and IT ability.C The relation between literacy, numeracy and IT ability.D The difference between literacy, numeracy and IT ability..(3)According to the text, books influence one's________.A parental educationB occupational attainmentC calculating abilityD reading ability.(4)What is the writer's purpose in writing the text?________A To describe the importance of receiving good education.B To clarify the effect of home library size on one's adult skills.C To explain the necessity of acquiring literacy and numeracy.D To introduce methods of improving one's literacy and numeracy.第二节(共1小题;每小题10分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填人空白处的最佳选项.选项中有两项为多余选项.4. When he was younger, he had visited the kind lady who lived in this house. So this time, he opened the door straight and entered. The old widow was happy to see him and gave him some bread. Robin told her his story, and she sighed.“An evil wind is blowing through this place,” she said. “The poor have nothing because the rich take everything. My three sons killed the King’s deer to keep us from starving. They are outlaws, and now they hide in the forest. They tell me that 40 men, all skilled archers (弓箭手), are hiding with them.“Where are they?” cried Robin. “I would like to join them.”“My boys will visit me tonight,” said the widow. “Stay here, and meet them if you want.”When Robin met the three sons, he was eager to join their band. They were men like him who loved the forest and were skilled with a bow. They accepted him and told him that their band was looking for a leader.“We are looking for someone who can use his head and his bow,” said one. “All of us are wanted by the Sheriff (州长). So if one of us wins the archery(箭术)contest in Nottingham, he will be our leader.”“What a coincidence!” said Robin, standing suddenly. “I was on my way there before all this trouble started. 英语_2020年浙江省宁波市高考英语二模试卷含答案
2020年浙江省宁波市高考英语二模试卷第二部分阅读理解(共两节,满分25.0分)第一节(共3小题;每小题2.5分,满分25.0分)阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C和D四个选项中,选出最佳选项,并在答题纸上将该项涂黑.1. Do you have a job? If you do, you'll know the world of work can be tough ﹣long hours, boring tasks and stress. But it can bring benefits too, such as a regular salary. Maybe that's why more of us are now taking on a side hustle ﹣ another name for a second job.For Some having two jobs is a necessity ﹣﹣ a way to make ends meet and provide extra income. But it now seems that more people want to put their skills and passions into practice to make money. These tend to be entrepreneurial young people who want to work on their own projects alongside their main source of income.According to Henley Business School, around one in four workers run at least one side hustle business, half of which were started in the past two years. Those aged 25 to 34 are most likely to be involved, with 37 percent thought to run a sideline of some kind. It calculates that the average side hustler makes about 20 percent of their income through their second job.But what's interesting is that many millennials (千禧一代)are turning their hand to new jobs not just for money and security. Research has found that almost three﹣quarters of people are following a passion or exploring a new challenge. Becci Mai Ford, who works some of the time for a telecommunications company to pay the bills, spends the rest of her time developing her craft company. She says going full﹣time is "not financially worth it right now but it fuels my creative soul and makes me happy".Of course having a side hustle means you are self﹣employed, which can give you flexibility to work when you like, but it can be risky. You sometime work on a zero﹣hours contract and may not get offered enough work. Or what was originally your passion may become more of a chore. However, this could be the best way to try out a new career or follow a passion while not giving up the day job.(1)According to the passage, which of the following is NOT the reason for people to take on a side hustle?________A To make money.B To obtain job satisfaction.C To have the flexibility to work.D To enjoy a risky lifestyle..(2)The author explains the study from Henley Business School by________.A describing the processB making a comparisonC presenting researchfindings D analyzing cause and effect.(3)What is the author's attitude towards having a second job?________A Critical.B Indifferent.C Neutral.D Favorable.2. With Chinese consumers hit by quarantine (隔离期)and travel restrictions as well as just cautious about going out to the shops due to the coronavirus epidemic(流行病), companies in China are experimenting with new tricks to make sales.Oil giant Sinopec ﹣ keen to get customers back in their cars and help farmers due to roadblocks ﹣ launched a new project last month called "zerotouch" vegetable sales at its 6, 000 gas stations in 147 Chinese cities. Consumers place and pay for orders on the app and when they drive up, gas station employees put the vegetables into their cartrunk, ________ any need for human﹣to﹣human contact."The coronavirus outbreak has made it difficult for people to shop as before, " said Li Hong, vice president of Sinopec's convenience store sales division. "Travel demand has been falling, but demand for food is pretty rigid."Mengniu Dairy, China's dairy producer, is racing to add more vending machines to the 10, 000 it currently has, saying the epidemic has driven unexpectedly strong demand for the sales channel. Its system allows customers to order products like milk and yoghurt online which can then be picked up from their local vending machine. "The virus outbreak has decreased consumption for dairy products as people are unwilling to go to the supermarket, " said Meng Fanjie, head of the company's Communist Party committee.Luckin Coflfee, a competitive rival to Starbucks, now also offers the sanitizer (消毒)products (e.g. hand soap) besides coffee. Liu Xingliang, an independent retait analyst, said, however, that Luckin's strategy would have only a modest impact. "At best some users will place an order when they buy coffee, but nobody is deliberately choosing the Luckin app just to buy sanitizer."(1)According to the passage, why did some companies adopt new selling methods?________A Citizens were not allowed to go out.B The demand for travel and food declined sharply.C The coronavirus epidemic changed people's way of life.D Companies desired to grasp the chance to defeat their competitors..(2)What does the underlined word "eliminating" in Paragraph 2 most probably refer to?________A meetingB removingC decreasingD limiting.(3)The passage is written mainly to________.A illustrate the difficulty caused by the coronavirus epidemicB explain the changes made by some companies in the epidemicC describe the challenges some companies met during the epidemicD reveal the intelligence people showed in the coronavirus epidemic.3. People may set an alarm on the phone or clock that sounds like this: beep beep beep. That hard, unpleasant sound may be making it harder to shake off the sleepy feeling in the morning known as grogginess. So, is there a better way to wake up? A recent study says yes. The answer is music. The study, carried out by researchers in Australia, involved 50 people. The researchers found that people who wake up to musical alarms reported feeling more awake and alert. Stuart McFarlane, a lead writer of the study stated, "We are very surprised by these findings as one might expect a harsh beeping sound to be more successful, " at waking up a person.Sleep inertia is another term for grogginess. It means a person has a heavy feeling when waking up, and has trouble getting moving again after sleeping. McFarlane said people need to better understand sleep inertia's harmful effects on human performance later in the day.Not everyone will experience the full effect. But for those who do, "care should be taken" when performing duties that require a top performance within this period, he said. This includes "dangerous tasks like driving or riding our bikes" shortly after waking up. The same is true for people who work in dangerous situations shortly after they wake, including firefighters and pilots. So, what makes musical alarms better for waking up? The researchers think the music may be more successful in reducing sleep inertia because it has several tones, compared to the single tone of a "beeping" alarm. McFarlane said that the changes over time betweenthe music tones may help increase a person's attention when waking from sleep. And is there a kind of music that is best to wake up to? There may be, McFarlane said. "We could suggest alarm sounds that are tune full and easy to hum or sing along with. The current sounds I have been using include 'Close to me' by the Cure and'Borderline' by Madonna."No matter how you wake up, experts say, the amount of sleep you get also matters ﹣ a lot.(1)Which of the following might be the best title for the text?________A What is grogginess?B Why are musical alarms better?C Which music is the best?D How can we overcome grogginess?.(2)Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?________A Sleep inertia is another cause for grogginess.B How long a person sleeps is of great importance.C The 'beeping' alarm is not effective mainly because of its noisytone. My throat was tight and my cheeks got red, but Ididn't care. I was ready to marry David Sanchez. We're a "nontraditional" couple: getting married not at a church but in a bookstore that supports a charity to fight H.I.V. and homelessness."Kim! I could walk you down the aisle if you like!" David's father offered gently."I'm OK. But I appreciate that, " I said with a smile. And I was reminded, again, of my dad's absence. My father died of cancer six weeks ago. For the last two months, we tried to make him feel comfortable and loved as he departed from this world. He always told us that he didn't like a funeral and insisted our wedding go forward as planned. But how could we honorhim since the wedding would be the first time the family would gather after his death and some even didn't know he was sick?During the ceremony, my dear friend Eva delivered a reading entitled "When Things Go Missing" by Kathryn Schulz. She paused and got everyone on the same page: "When we are experiencing it, loss often feels like confusion in the usual order of things. In fact, the entire plan of the universe consists of losing, and life amounts to a reverse(逆向的)savings account in which we are eventually robbed of everything."I felt the energy full of the room. Everyone was listening. By choosing to accept the pain, we knew what a wedding does to join two families and mark the next chapter for a couple. ________.After rings were exchanged, fried chicken was served, our friends offered so many funny and touching toasts, and finally David sang "Married" on my father's guitar. C It was held at a church. D There was no other activity except reading.2. Probably no other musical instrument is as popular as the guitar. Musicians use the guitar for almost every kind of music. Country and western music would not be the samewithout a guitar. The traditional Spanish folk music called Flamenco could not exist without a guitar. The sound of American blues music would not be the same without the sad cry of the guitar. And rock and roll music would almost be impossible without this instrument. Some music experts say an instrument very much like a guitar was played in Egypt more than one thousand years ago. Some other experts say that the ancestor of the modern guitar was brought to Spain from Persia sometime in the twelfth century. The guitar continued to develop in Spain. In the 1700s, it became similar to the instrument we know today. Many famous musicians played the instrument. The famous Italian violinist Niccolo Paganinni played and wrote music for the guitar in the early 1800s. Franz Schubert used the guitar to write some of his famous works. One kind of music for the guitar developed in the southern area of Spain called Adalusia. It will always be strongly linked with the Spanish guitar. It is called Flamenco. In the 1930s, Les Paul began experimenting with ways to make an electric guitar. He invented the solid body electric guitar in 1946. The guitar has always been important to blues music. With the electric guitar, Les Paul helped make modern blues music possible. There have been many great blues guitarists. Yet, music experts say all blues guitar players are measured against one man and his famous guitar. That man isB. B. King. Every blues fan knows that years ago B. B. King named his guitar Lucille. Here B. B. King plays Lucille on his famous recording of "The Thrill Is Gone". Lucille, B. B. King's large, beautiful black guitar, is important to American music. Visitors can see King's very first guitar at the Rock and Soul Museum in Memphis, Tennessee. The museum is the only permanent exhibit organized by the Smithsonian Institution outside Washington, D. C. , and New York City.(1)Where did the modern guitar finally come into being?________A Spain.B Egypt.C Persia.D Italy..(2)What does the last paragraph mainly tell us?________A The musicianB The Rock and Soul Museum first opened in Memphis.C The electric guitar promoted the development of the blues.D The exhibit was first organized by the Smithsonian Institution..(3)What would be the best title for this passage?________A Traditional Folk MusicB Guitar and MusicC Violinist and BluesD Flamenco and Guitar.3. If you could change your child's DNA in the future to protect them against diseases, would you? It could be possible because of technology known as CRISPR﹣ Cas, or just CRISPR.CRISPR involves a piece of RNA, a chemical messenger, designed to work on one part of DNA; it also uses an enzyme that can take unwanted genes out and put new onesin, according to The Economist. There are other ways of editing DNA, but CRISPR will do it very simply, quickly, and exactly. The uses of CRISPR could mean that cures are developed for everything from Alzheimer's to cancer to HIV. By allowing doctors to put just the right cancer﹣killing genes into a patient's immune system, the technology could help greatly. The US National Academy of Sciences plans to discuss questions about CRISPR's ethics(伦理问题). For example, CRISPR doesn't work properly yet. As well as cutting the DNA it is looking for, it often cuts other DNA, too. In addition, we currently seem to have too little understanding of what DNA gives people what qualities. There are also moral questions around ________. Of course, medicine already stops natural things from happening﹣for example, it saves people from infections. The opportunities to treat diseases make it hard to say we shouldn't keep going. Also, according to The Economist, gene editing may mean that parents make choices that are not obviously in the best interests of their children: "Deaf parents may prefer their children to be deaf too; parents might want to make their children more intelligent at all costs."In the end, more research is still needed to see what we can and can't do with CRISPR. "It's still a huge mystery how we work, " Craig Mello, a UMass Medical School biologist and Nobel Prize winner, told The Boston Globe, "We're just trying to figure out this amazingly complicated thing we call life."(1)What is the passage mainly about?________A What we can and can't do with CRISPR.B The advantages of CRISPR and arguments about its ethics.C How CRISPR was developed by scientists.D Scientists' experiments of using CRISPR to edit human embryos..(2)What does the writer mean by saying "playing God" in Para. 5?________A Playing jokes on religious people.B Asking God to help deal with moral questions.C Following the instructions of God.D Doing things that go against nature..(3)According to the passage, the technology of CRISPR________.A is very safe because it only cuts the DNA it is looking forB is very helpful to cure people of any diseaseC could cause parents to make unwise choices for theirchildren D could help us understand how complicated life is.(4)What is the author's attitude towards CRISPR?________A Objective.B Worried.C Negative.D Supportive.第二节:(共1小题;每小题10分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项.选项中有两项为多余选项.4. 高考英语模拟试卷题号I II III IV V总分得分一、阅读理解(本大题共10小题,共25.0分)AA famous Anglican Church stands in a quiet corner of Dunedin in New Zealand's South Island.Built in 1865,it is the city's oldest church still in use.Countless couples have gathered here to marry. It's where morning tears are shared, friendships formed and comfort given during times of loss.As with many churches, its walls are graced with a collection of beautiful stained-glass windows.Known as the"John Allen window",one window portrays the short life of a local man,John Allen, who died in 1915 in the Gallipoli campaign in Turkey.John was the son of Sir James Allen, who as Minister of Defense, helped plan and administer New Zealand's World War I strategy, which saw 100,000 troops sent to fight. With the war over and his son dead,Sir James chose to install a window in the church, with which the Allen family had strong ties.Divided into two parts, one depicts (描绘)St.George, the patron saint (守护神)of soldiers, while the other has an angel of peace, along with the words at the bottom,"John Hugh All Gallipoli,6th June,1915".Two trees with local birds on the branches can be seen and a kiwi walks at the bottom- reminders that John was a lover of birds."There are many war memorials in the church," says the church."However the 'John Allen window' stands out;it touches people because of the beautiful design, the New Zealand birds and because John's story,of a life so full of promise ending tragically in the war, reflects the lives and stories of so many others involved in World War I."1.What does the word"portrays"in paragraph 2 most probably mean?______A. Freedom and equality.B. Peace and war.C. Human and nature.D. Marriage and family.4.What might be the best title for the text ______ .A. A Brave SoldierB. Window on a LifeC. Cruelty of the WarD. A Grand ChurchBWe spend a great amount of time listening to music. Most college students listen to music at least three or four times a week, and more than 50 percent of them go to at least one concert per year.According to new research,we may be born liking music, because human beings are born to find certain combinations of sounds attrative. For example, young chidren can recognizea familiar Song even when its key is changed.Similarly, they respond with more emotions to their mothers' singing than to their mothers' speech.Careful analysis of mothers'chid-dircted songs indicates that each mother's songs remain stable from one"performance"to the next, and this may encourage children's engagement with the songs.Research with adults suggests that music catches our attention by activating(激活)brain pathways that are most suited to processing music than to processing other kinds of sound.Specifically, music appreciation relies on the auditory cortex(听觉皮层)on the right side of the brain, which is specialized to process sound that characterizes music-in contrast to the left auditory cortex, which processes the stop-and-start bursts of sound that characterize speech.Although some Psychologists remain skeptical about whether music may have powerful effects on our thinking,a number of studies have shown that listening to music can increase people's spatial reasoning abilities Furthermore,It is clear that music can greatly influence our emotions.Personally significant music activates areas of the brain associated with pleasure and reward, the same areas that are activated by sex and good food.Researchers do not agree about how humans' abilties to process and enjoy music have come into being.Anyway, the next time you enjoy listening to a piece of music, remember that the most complex pieces of audio equipment are the ones between your headphones.5.Which of the following might belong to the"certain combinations of sounds"in paragraph2?______A. A song.B. A debateC. A quarrel.D. A dialogue.6.It can be learned from paragraph 4 that ______ .A. no doubt music can increase people's thinking abilityB. music simply gives people positive emotionsC. only music can give people pure pleasure and rewardD. music has a great influence on human beings7.According to the passage, the most complex pieces of audio equipment lie ______ .A. at a collegeB. in a concertC. in the brainD. in the headphoneCA great number of species make their home in the vast waters of the Atlantic Ocean.Although the entire ocean makes up an ecosystem, many smaller habitats are found within, including an open-water habitat off the coast of the Northern Atlantic Ocean known as the Sargasso Sea.Sargassum is an alga(海藻)that floats in masses that can continue for miles .The waters of the Gulf Stream push the water in a northward move into this area. This constant move and varying temperature support the accumulation of the brown-colored seaweed. The Sargasso Sea is so enormous that one method of information collection has not been enough for scientists to obtain an accurate picture of what takes place within this ecosystem.Researchers have needed to employ several methods of sampling. Methods such as dragging nets over the surface of the water and videotaping beneath areas of sargassum have served scientists well.Information collected has shown that the Gulf Stream pushes brown algae from open water into the Sargasso Sea area, creating a diverse floating habitat in an area that would otherwise not support that wildlife. In the most recent study of the sargassum community off the shores of North Carolina,eighty-one fish species were documented as using the area as a microhabitat. This is an increase from previous studies. The types of fish found here are both commercially andenvironmentally important. The South Atlantic Fishery Management Council is working to regulate the harvesting of sargassum. The Council hopes to have the area classified as an Essential Fish Habitat.Which would afford it certain protections.Further research needs to be done before scientists understand how to best protect the Sargasso Sea as well as understand how it goes about supporting so many important types of wildlife.8.The author uses "enormous" in paragraph 2 to stress that ______ .A. the Atlantic Ocean is really amazing in terms of its size and areaB. what the researchers do is highly respected by scientific communityC. the research work is complex because a large area must be coveredD. a large amount of money for the Sargasso Sea research is needed9.It can be inferred from the phrase"needed to be done"in paragraph 4 that the author thinks______ .A. the Sargasso ecosystem is worth our attention and needs more studyB. the scientific community has ignored this complex ecosystemC. the Sargasso Sea is becoming a problem and needs removingD. new methods for researching the ecosystem must be found instantly10.The text is mainly about ______ .A. diversity of wildlife in the Atlantic OceanB. different habitats of sea animalsC. methods of information collectionD. the Sargasso Sea as an entire ecosystem二、阅读七选五(本大题共5小题,共10.0分)How do you relax after a stressful day in the office? There are many ways to help you relax.(1) .It takes a little effort to get there but the benefits are great for our stressed-out lives.I am talking about the activity of forest bathing.(2) .It was introduced as a national health programme by the country's government.Stressed Japanese workers are today still relaxing and reconnecting with nature. The Forest Therapy Society has certified 62 forest therapy sites in the country and the forest bathing movement is also booming in other parts of the world. It says,"Just as bathing in a hot spring helps to soak your cares away, going for a walk in the woods is said to have a comforting effect." Forest bathing is about taking time to wander through woodland with no fixed plan or route and just expose yourself to the forest atmosphere.(3) .That's particularly good for people with mental health issues.A study conducted in 24 forests across Japan found that walking among trees lowered blood pressure, the pulse rate, thus improving our immune systems.(4) .Another study carried out a few years ago by Stanford University in the US,found similar benefits.Brain scans showed reduced activity in an area of the brain linked to the risk of mental illness in participants who took a 90-minute walk among oaks, birds and squirrels. One of the researchers,Gregory Bratman, said,"There's an increasing body of evidence showing that natural areas benefit us at least emotionally with our mood and our physical development too."The evidence seems clear that forest bathing is a shot in the arm for stressed-out workers. So now is the time to get out and lose yourself in the natural environment,(5) .A.But the best way lies in the great outdoors.B.Connecting with nature has never been more urgent.C.Forest bathing is rising in popularity around the world.D.Having this exposure to nature seems to promote well-being.E.You could even hug a tree as it could be your new best friend!F.The Japanese concept of forest bathing dates back to the 1980s.G.It also found forest bathing can decrease stress.anxiety, and depression.11. If the world followed the so-called "planetary health" diet, the scientists told Reuter s that each year more than 11 million early deaths could be prevented. Scientists say th at the way we produce and eat food is very bad for the planet. For the health of the pla net, they claim the same diet would reduce greenhouse gases and save more land, wa ter and animals.Tim Lang, a professor at Britain's University of London, co-led the research. He told Reuters, "The food we eat and how we produce it determines the health of people and the planet, and we are currently getting this seriously wrong." Lang added that the world's population is expected to grow to 10 billion people by 2050. If we want to feed everyone, he explained, we all need to change what we eat and the way we eat by "improving food production and reducing food waste."Well, what do you eat on the planetary health diet? The scientists who created this diet say it is largely plant-based but still has small amounts of dairy, fish and meat. T he diet calls for cutting red meat and sugar by 50 percent and doubling the amount of nut s, fruits, vegetables and legumes.Food situations around the world are not equal. In certain areas, this would mean great changes. People in North America, for example, eat 6.5 times the recommend ed amount of red meat. On the other hand, people in South Asia eat only half the am ount suggested by the new planetary health diet. Meeting the targets for vegetables wo uld need big changes in other areas. In sub-Saharan Africa, people on average eat 7.5 times the suggested amount of vegetables like potatoes and cassava. The scientists admit their goal will be difficult to achieve. Her company produces over 1,500 bricks a day.The pavers are made using a mix of plastic products that cannot be reprocessed or recycled. The collected plastic is mixed with sand, heated at very high temperatures, and compressed (压缩)into bricks that vary in color and thickness. The resulting product is stronger, lighter, and about 30 percent cheaper than concrete bricks.More importantly,it helps repurpose the lowest quality of plastic. "There is that waste they cannot process anymore;they cannot recycle. That is what we get." Matee says. Matee is not nearly done. Her dream is to reduce the mountain of trash to just a hill by increasing production and expanding her offerings. She says,"The more we recycle the plastic, the more we produce affordable housing, the more we created more employment for the youth."8. To take the first step, I did some brainstorming and explored opportunities on the Internet and finally decided to go for China. There were a number of reasons behind it—its advanced education system and thousands of centuries of rich culture inspired me to study there. The primary one was my curiosity how a nation has left many nations behind in a short time at its fast pace of development. So just like that, I applied, along with some of my friends, for a master's degree program at Communication University of China. I was the only one who got selected in the said program and in addition, the Chinese Scholarship Council sponsored all of my expenses. This good news was welcomed by my family. This is my seventh month in Beijing. In my experience so far, one thing that appeared to be missing was the internship (实习) which I tried to find because I want to work here after completion of my studies. After some struggles I was lucky enough to get the opportunity to work as an intern with the Center for China and Globalization (CCG). It's very exciting to work on their team as a researcher. But for them doing nothi ng is also not an option. Willet said, "If we can't quite make it, it's better to try and get as close as we can.-------- 答案及解析 --------1.答案:【小题1】D 【小题2】B 【小题3】C解析:1-3 DBC1.D.细节理解题.由题干中的disabled visitors 可以定位到文中第一段的Entrance:Free. The Museum provides equipment for visitors with disabilities,可知The Leventis Municipal Museum允许残疾人进入,故选D.2.B.细节理解题.由题干中的the Stemi Museum of Village Life'可以定位到文中第二段的Sewing tools and equipment, handkerchief, kitchenware, pots and jars, traditional clothing arc some of the exhibitions of this amazing museum.意为:这个神奇的博物馆展览着一些纫工具和设备、手帕、厨具、锅和罐子,传统服装等.可知斯特姆博物馆的乡村生活博物馆展示的是一些生活用品.故选B.3.C.细节理解题.由题干中的at 9:00a.m.on Monday可以定位到文中第四段的Open daily:8:30a.m.-5p.m.(November-March),8:30a.m.-6p,m.(April-October).All year round.

Awards Given to a Young InventorCWhen athletes at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics collect their medals, they'll not only be wearing something that celebrates their sporting performance, but something that symbolizes lastingness. For both the 2020 Olympics and Paralympics, organizers aim to make all of thegold, silver, and bro nze medals out of used electronics. This strong message about how to make use of e-waste has gotten a of Japan involved.Starting in April 2017,the Japanese Olympic Committee began collecting old laptops, digital cameras, smartphones, and other abandoned electronics. The initiative(倡议)has achievedgreat success.Already, the quantity needed for bronze medals has been met,and they're in the homestretch for silver and gold medals, meaning the collection process can pack up at the end of March. When looking just at the number of cell phones collected, the amount of waste is shocking. In a period of about 18 months,a little over 5 million smartphones were collected thanks to cooperation with NTT DOCOMO.Japan's largest mobile phone operator allowed the public to turn in phones at their shops, which counted a lot in the project's success. After being taken apart and sorted, the small electronics underwent a smelting process to extract(提炼)all the gold, silver, andbronze elements. Thanks to this initiative, the worldwide struggle with-waste will have a global platform.According to a study published bythe United Nations University-44.7 million metric tons of e-waste were made in 2016.Only20% of that was actually recycled.Unfortunately, this figure is set to rise significantly in the coming years, moving to 52.2 million metric tons by 2021.So while the Tokyo Olympics initiative might be just a drop in the bucket,it5s a good start in showing what the public can doif they're made more aware of the issue.7.What can be learnt about Tokyo Olympics initiative from the passage______A. Do kids need rules, or is it more important for them to find out on their own what works and what doesn't work? It all depends on what the rules are supposed to accomplish. My feeling is that the most effective rules are the ones that will help students now and in the future. The school and parents should avoid rules that have no long-term value and make rules that help students focus on the future.__1__For example, unreasonable dress and grooming(修饰) codes are particularly annoying. What lasting benefit do they have? Boys have been sent home for wearing their hair too long. What is gained by regulating hairstyles? It seems to me that learning about appropriate grooming is something that students can safely learn on their own. It won't really ruin a person's life to look back at a yearbook picture in 10 years and laugh at the hairstyles. On the other hand, most students respect rules and requirements that help them stay focused on the future. It seems that every day the world gets more confused about what's important, so it's definitely useful to have a few guidelines for staying on track. Students may complain about having to take required courses(especially the ones they don't like), reading books during summer vacation, and doing community service, but at least they can see that there are clear reasons for these requirements. __2__My own lesson in rules happened when I was in eighth grade. Because I got all C's on my firstquarter report card, Dad said that I was limited to one hour of TV on school nights. Of course, I was upset and said my freedom was being taken away. Dad stood firm, and my grades improved dramatically. __3__ I probably wouldn't have come up with the TV rule on my own, and as a result, my life may have been much different.I realize that people who come up with rules mean well. They, too, are trying to remove distractions and smooth the way to success for students. __4__ Good intentions don't always make good rules.第一节根据短文内容,从A、B、C、D和E中选出最适合填入短文空白处的选项。

In 2012, he and his family were inspired to build and donate a bunk bed, one bed on top of the other, after learning there were local children who slept on the floor. Shocked to discover how widespread this need was in his community, Mickelson founded Sleep in Heavenly Peace, a nonprofit that builds and delivers beds to children in need.Born and raised in Idaho, Mickelson, now 41, had a thriving career. He coached his kids’ sports teams and fished in the nearby river. But when he met children who were sleeping on the floor, his peaceful life changed course.Using safety guidelines and his daughter’s bunk bed as a model, Mickelson started buying wood and supplies to build beds with his own money. He recruited friends and family members to help around the holiday. As word spread, interest and involvement from his and other communities flooded—along with Mickelson’s bunk bed output. “That first project, we built 11 bunk beds in my garage,” he said. “The next year, we did 15. Then it doubled every year. In 2017, we built 612 bunk beds.”With the motto “No kid sleeps on the floor in our town”, the nonprofit and its more than 65 branches have built and delivered more than 1,500 free beds to children across America. But along with the rapid growth, Mickelson was faced with a tough choice: advancing his career or his nonprofit. He chose the latter and went from making “great money to zero money”. He’s never looked back. “I found that the need I have isn’t financial,” he said. “The need I have is seeing the joy on kids’ faces, knowing that I can make a difference.”4. Why did Mickelson set up Sleep in Heavenly Peace?A. To help the poor children.B. To make a big fortune.C. To inspire his community.D. To get more donations.5. What do we know about Luke Mickelson?A. They volunteered to buy beds with their own money.7. What is Mickelson’s attitude to the nonprofit?A. AmbiguousB. Defensive.C. Cautious.D. Positive.CLearning how to face silence in conversation is an important skill especially when working across cultures. In international negotiations, experienced negotiator (谈判者) stay silent and impassive on purpose because that will make others feel uncomfortable and possibly make compromises without having to do anything. Americans especially can’t stand silence, so they often are the first to break the silence and sometimes might be at a disadvantage in negotiations. So what’s the best response? Set your jaw and wait it out. Don’t offer a compromise just because theyare not speaking. If you have to say something, ask a direct question, such as “What’s your initial reaction to that offer?” Once a silence is getting into 45 seconds you could say, “Let’s come back to that in a minute and go on with the next part of our negotiation.”In presentations, silence can be far more effective than dramatic passion (热情). Before starting, look at the audie nce and be silent for a moment because that says, “I’m in control. I know what I’m doing. I’m confident.”A classic example was when Apple co-founder Steve Jobs launched the first iPhone. He introduced with many pauses so that you didn’t miss his key point s. Because silence makes us nervous, our natural reaction is that we’d better pay attention, there’s something going on here.Equally, when giving a speech to staff or trainees, pauses count-especially if there are negatives. If you keep talking you’re spoon feeding. Give people a moment of silence to get beyond the emotional response and to start thinking consciously and processing.Silence can be an inward-focused thoughtful activity or an outward stillness where you give yourself the time to watch and think and listen to the world around you. Having observed the use of silence in Finland and also among the Blackfeet Nation, a North American Indian tribe in northern Montana in the US, we can see benefits far beyond wheeling and dealing.Silence can be a very powerful point for understanding ourselves, understanding others, for developing better common understanding and more productive outcomes and that applies to business, politics, education, law, medicine, every area of human life.8. What is most likely to be Americans idea?A. Speaking less gives the upper handB. The shorter talking gaps are, the better.C. A silent man is the best one to listen toD. Speak out what you have in your mind.9. What is the purpose of the example of Steve Jobs?A. To show the wisdom of Steve Jobs.B. To explain silence can be more effective.C. To introduce how to make a presentation.D. To prove silence can ease one’s nervousness.10. What is the meaning of the underlined words “spoon feeding” in Paragraph 6?A. Supporting some person with any selfless help.B. Feeding somebody patiently with a small spoon.C. Giving others some new ideas to think over carefully.D. Using a way that discourages independent thought.11. What is the main idea of the passage?A. Silence is the best defense.B. Silence in negotiations is of great help.C. Learning the skills about silence is important.D. Silence has different meanings in difficult culture.DBritish people work some of the longest hours in Europe, but are among the least productive. Now some companies are shortening the working week to increase efficiency, health and happiness.Rich Leigh has introduced a four-day week at his PR company. In fact, his entire company has Friday off, because his firm has adopted a four-day week. It is one of a handful of UK businesses that now operate like this: staff still get paid their previous five-day salary, but they work a day less. The company found that they achieved just as much—and there were even sighs of growth. “The key to the scheme’s success,” Leigh says, “is how happy our employees now are.”The average British worker takes only a 34 minute lunch break and works 10 hours overtime each week (more often than not this is unpaid). Yet UK productivity falls seriously behind their European neighbors, who tend to work fewer hours.British working practices have caused loss and damage to the nation’s health and happiness. More than half a million workers in the UK were signed off with work-related stress or anxiety last year. Moreover, the work landscape itself is changing. Automation and AI will have a significant impact on the labor market, where unsteady work becomes more common.Britain is the only EU member that allows workers to ignore the EU working time limit and work longer ho urs. For campaigners, now is the time for a change. O’Grady, an advocate, argues that where businesses have increased their profits as a result of automation, success should be shared with workers in the form of reduced hours. “It’s time to share the benef its from new technology, not allowing those at the top to grab them for themselves.” she says.12.
