1In this summer holidays, I read a book called < Great Expectations>, it was written by Charles Dickens, one of the most famous English writers. He wrote lots of wonderful novels. This book is one of his compositions.People always like to compare with their friends. It is a big foible of all the people. If other people have a lot of money, we also want to be rich. If all the people around us are poor , we never mind that we are very poor, too. we will not ashamed because of our folly. This is a social problem. If we never possess anything, we will not mind we lost some thing. Since we don’t want to be very rich ,we will not feel despond because poor. The protagonist of this novel is Pip (Handel)。

Reflection on Great Expectation-----My Reading Report of Great ExpectationClass one Student No.10 Name: Anna Wang Great Expectation was written by Charles Dickens (1812-1870), one of the most popular writers of all the time, who created some of the best-known characters in English literature. Great Expectation is similar to David Copperfield in that it is the story of a boy growing up.Pip has lost his parents when he was fifteen years old. He was brought up by his sister and her husband--Joe Gargery, a blacksmith who takes Pip on as an apprentice, teaches him his trade and makes friends with him. One day before Christmas, when Pip went to the churchyard where his parents were buried, he met an escaping convict-- Abel Magwitch. Pip brought cakes for the hungry man, which touched Abel deeply, although he was caught by police. After the Christmas, Pip was invited to play with Estella, a beautiful girl adopted by Miss Havisham. Miss Havisham was the richest man in the village. But she was very strange. She was dressed a bridal veil all the whole life after her fiancé left her at the wedding day, taking her a large amount of property. So she lived in the revenge and hated all the men. She treated Estella as a tool to take revenge on all man. When Pip met Estella, he loved her, so did Estella. But Estella knew she was just a tool to carry out the revenge plan of Miss Havisham, so she pretended to be proud, indifferent and look down upon Pip- a relative of a poor blacksmith, which broke Pip’s heart. As a consequence, Pip was determined to become a real gentleman who is in possession of money, good manners, luxurious life and a great expectation for Estella’s sake. Under the help of a stranger who donated a lot of money to him, Pip left Joe and the village, and went to London to live a luxurious life to learn to how to become a real gentleman. Pip started to waste money, look down upon other poor people, even including Joe, his brother-in-law and best friend! Gradually, Pip lost himself in the whirlpool of money, although he has had a large number of debts. As the same time, Estella has become more and more beautiful, graceful and brilliant. She walked in the crowd of men and married one of them as the Miss Havisham’s wish, which really tore Pip into pieces. And, as the same time, the mysterious benefactor of Pip came out. He is Abel- the escaping convict whom Pip has helped. When he escaped from the prison again, he earned much money and wanted to pay back Pip in that way. But Abel soon was caught by police and died. The properties he gave to Pip also were confiscated by police. Pip fell from the heaven to hell. He couldn’t stand it. As a result, he had a serious ill. After receiving a letter describing the bad situation of Pip, Joe came to London to look after Pip in spite of the bad attitude Pip ever towards him. After recovering, Pip realized his wrong. He decided to be a gentleman by his own endeavor. So he came back to the small village and spared no efforts to make business with his friend--Herbert. Several years later, Pip met Estella again at the old house of Miss Havisham. After knowing her husband has died and the real reason why Estella didn’t choose him before, Pip made a proposal to her. At last, the two lovers were in together and Pip found his real great expectation at the end. When I finished reading the novel, I also take consideration to the question “what a real great expectation is?” In my opinion, great expectation not means money, luxurious life provided by others, even the benefactors are your parents. It is our own dreams that we want to realize by ourown efforts. Great expectation may be the further study, a respectable degree, a good job, a warm family or something else. But we must know that our future and great expectation must be mastered by our own. We should working for them, fighting for them, even dying for them, whatever. Only when we got what we want by our own endeavor, can we say we have had a great expectation. I think there are three themes revealed in the novel Great Expectations1.women are fragile. That is not because those women are in lack of will, but that they need surviving abilities and that of self-survival and struggle against destiny. They always turn to men. That can be called “hero saving the beauty”. This notion originated in the Greek tales but is still adopted successively. The only difference between them lies in the plot and structure. Estella is adopted and trained to break men?s hearts by Miss Havisham. Havisham revenges men and marries Estella to an unworthy guy though Pip deeply loves Estella. Nothing can be bitterer than see his lover married to another guy for a man. Pip really fell into the despair of losing Estella. However, Estella suffers a lot and begins to regret for her initial choice for her spouse and begins to treasure2.Facing destiny, women are physically and intellectually inferior to men. Actually it does not mean they have an inferior intelligence, but that it seems so. Or we can say that both men and women have the same potential of intelligence, but women never show a lot. God creates everyone equally, but not everyone is granted the same approaches to success or achievements. Women are restricted to families, which restrictsthem from showing a lot. They can cook food well, which is one standard for their excellence but not the one for male. The novel goes this way since it implies the male consciousness. The ordinary intelligence of women in marriage and love is exposed completely. Havisham is abandoned on her wedding day, but she keeps the room like the day she got married, while on the other hand she tries every means to revenge men. Bearing these two conflictive thoughts in mind, Havisham certainly fails to live her own life out of the control or influence from male.3.The discipline for women ]. A feminist De Bufuwa says: “One is called woman because she is ?made? not ?born?.” Culturally woman is the product of society and the result of its strict restrictions. Those women who do not obey the disciplines are not regarded as gracious or good women by social criteria, which emphasizes on families, the responsibilities for their husbands and their dependence on men. In Great Expectations, Estella and Havisham?s misfortunes are closely attached to love and marriage. They try to revenge men and but they cannot leave men. Estella leaves Pip, but at last she comes back to him. And Havisham keeps thinking about her marriage day and her husband. So in Dickens?s novel, women are decent on surface, but failed in heart.Every period has an outstanding feature, which make descendants linger in mind. To learn this novel can help us in understanding better women?s efforts to stand up. Society presses public to believe that maleplays a dominant role. Havisham can symbolize a feminist but what then? She needs a male accompany. Her ending somewhat is tragic but Estella harvests through a long time, but anyway she wins in depending man and leading a pleasant life. Great Expectations is a novel by Charles Dickens, a famous writer from England. It is the story of the orphan Pip’s life. The character in this novelgaveme the deep impression was Pip.He fell in love with Estella. Educating himself for the girl,Pip studied as hard as he could. Why did he love Estella so much? Not for her beautiful face, her treasure . Pip paid out so much for the love.AlthoughEstella didnt treat him well and even that she didnt respect him at all! She put the food for him as a dog,but he didnt hate her. On the contrary, he left from his home with Pip/s friends. Pip just wanted to be a gentleman. He abandoned a lot than he got. I cant understand why he do it in this way. I think its not worth at all. If one person dont like you or not respect you,you neednt do everything for her. So it made me quite sad.I feel sorry for Pip. He had a very difficult life... Miss Havisham is alsoa character who left me a deep impression .She was a poor lady. Her mother died young. Her farther was very rich and very proudwith only one child, Miss Havisham, is his first wife.In fact, Miss Havisham should have a nice life, but her wedding was destroyed by her fiance. He broke her heart and she was angry. She wanted to retaliate all men. She was really a kind woman. But she chose a wrong way to continue her life. Miss Havisham wanted to hurt other persons. And she had done. This was not good for her. Only made her feel a little comfortable but there were also more victims in the world. The above is what I get from the novel in the textbook and to conclude my opinion in one sentence, I should say that people should not depend on others.。

1Thoughts on Great ExpectationsDuring the last month, I have been reading the novel named Great Expectations by Charles Dickens. I set up my mind to finish reading it for the simple reason that I have read the Chinese version of this great novel and I was deeply attracted by the story. The main character in this novel is Pip and the whole story goes like this: Pip was a orphan and was brought up by his sister “by hand”. His sister Mrs. Joe was very strict with him while his brother-in-law treat him kindly. As a result, the two developed a intimate relationship. Since Pip was asked to visit Miss Havishams’s house, his mind and his fate began to change. In Miss Havishams’s home, Pip saw her adopted daughter Estella and fell in love with her at the first sight. Then he was determined to be well-educated and become a gentleman in order to deserve the beautiful girl Estella. And much to his delight, he was given a large sum of money and an opportunity to study abroad by an anonymous person. After a period of time, his great expectations came true and he became a gentleman at last. However, he found out that the money was offered by the criminal he had saved when he was young. He felt ashamed and didn’t want to use the money any more. What’s worse, the criminal Magwitch escaped from prison to visit Pip and was noticed by the police. At last, Magwitch was sentenced to death and Pip led a normallife. The beautiful lady became a widow as her husband died. But Pip still loved her and promised to be friends with her all the same. This ending is a bit reaasuring.Among those several characters in the novel, my favourite is Magwitch. He was homeless and poor when he was young and he used to be put into prison several times. No one cared about him, so when little Pip saved him by giving him some food, he felt moved. And he bore Pip’s help in his mind. When he was exiled overseas, he was determined to make a lot of money and help Pip become a gentleman. He worked hard and saved every coin he could, and then sent it to Pip. He did all of these secretly in order to prevent little Pip from being embarrassed. After Pip became a real gentleman, Magwitch returned to England in secret only to see whether Pip had led a good life. What we can find from him is deep love for Pip. Although the society has deserted him, he is not deserted by himself. Different from Miss Havishams who is black-hearted, Magwitch is like a father. He showed his love to Pip without any hesitation. He was just like Pip’s father. This is why I admire him very much. Then when I look back into our society, I find that some parents are not as good as the criminal Magwitch. Cases are that parents push their children to work hard in order to be admitted into the college where they were eager to go when they were young. This usually leads to two consequences. One is that the children are exerted too much pressure and they go to extremes. The other is that their children do as they are told to and don’t have their independent thinking. They lack the comprehensive abilities to cope with fierce competition in today’s society. In other words, they are likely to survive in this competitive world.God is equal to everyone. When Magwitch knew that Estellawas his daughter and had been loved by Pip, he felt relieved. I am also relieved because one good turn deserves another.《远大前程》英文读后感篇2Great Expectations is a novel by Charles Dickens, a famous writer from England. It is the story of the orphan Pip’s life. The character in this novelgaveme the deep impression was Pip.He fell in love with Estella. Educating himself for the girl,Pip studied as hard as he could. Why did he love Estella so much? Not for her beautiful face, her treasure . Pip paid out so much for the love.AlthoughEstella didn't treat him well and even that she didn't respect him at all! She put the food for him as a dog,but he didn't hate her. On the contrary, he left from his home with Pip/s friends. Pip just wanted to be a gentleman. He abandoned a lot than he got. I can't understand why he do it in this way. I think it's not worth at all. If one person don't like you or not respect you,you needn't do everything for her. The above is what I get from the novel in the textbook and to conclude my opinion in one sentence, I should say that people should not depend on others.《远大前程》英文读后感篇3"Great Expectations" has been considered to be one of Charles Dickens’ most mature and relatively late works. Having experienced a wealth of human life, Dickens got a profound understanding of human-being, the surrounding environment and his life experiences while all his mature thinking and understanding were summarized into the book "Great Expectations". The original meaning of the work’s title in fact is a heritage, but when it was translated into Chinese it gave me an impression that the title shows the hero of the story had Great Expectations. However, reading over the book I realized that this "Great Expectations" takes an ironic band——it should be said that the theme of this work not only told the story of orphan Pip who wanted to be the ideal first-class disillusionment. If one does think so, he holds a wrong understanding of the great significance why Dickens creative the work. The hero Pip lived with his sister’s family. Though their life was hard, Pip didn’t wish to be a first-class person his vision was to be a blacksmith like his brother-in-law, his sister’s husband. The reason why he changed his mind and was eager to be a first-class person later was the changing of environment——he met Miss Harvisham, Estella and some other complex people. As we know one of Dickens's philosophy thoughts is environment takes a deep impact to humans’ ideological and the story expresses his viewthat different environment creates different people. In short, I think the work was not arbitrarily written, but was based on the 10 works before aggregating Dickens’ thoughts. What is more, Dickens had put his outlook on life, his views of philosophy and ethics into the great creation. The story is pided into three phases of Pip's life expectations. The first "expectation" is allotted 19 chapters, and the other two 20 chapters each in the 59-chapter work. In some editions, the chapter numbering reverts to Chapter One in each expectation, but the original publication and most modern editions number the chapters consecutively from one to 59. At the end of chapters 19 and 39, readers are formally notified that they have reached the conclusion of a phase of Pip's expectations. In the first expectation, Pip lives a humble existence with his ill-tempered older sister and her strong but gentle husband, Joe Gargery. Pip is satisfied with this life and his warm friends until he is hired by Miss Havisham and Estella. From that time on, Pip aspires to leave behind his simple life and be a gentleman. This life is suddenly turned upside down when he is visited by a London attorney, Mr. JaggersThe second stage of Pip's expectations has Pip in London, learning the details of being a gentlemen, having tutors, fine clothing, and joining cultured society. At the end of this stage, Pip is introduced to his benefactor, again changing his world. 4After reading the whole b ook of “Great Expectations” written by Charles Dickens, I can’t find suitable words to express my thoughts completely.First of all, I am attracted by the excellent literary talent of Charles Dickens. The descriptions of the details are just right forthe foundation of the background. The design of the story also brings me shock. To me, it is not only a good story, but also a lesson of the life that I am experiencing. But, what I have learnt from the book is not the main idea that Charles Dickens wanted to show. What impresses me deeply is only a supporting role ―Joe. Compared with the life of Pip, what Joe has experienced is so ordinary. He is an ordinary blacksmith, an ordinary husband, an ordinary brother, an ordinary friend, even an ordinary person! However, just such an ordinary person brings me a great special feeling. In his world, life is so simple. He is far away from the complex world which is polluted by the ugly soul of people. May be, “kind-hearted” is the biggest advantage of him, which is also the biggest shortage of him in his daily life.Different from all the other figures in the book, Joe’s life is so simple and his thoughts also stay pure after he experiences whatever sufferings that life gives him. In my opinion, his childhood is miserable. What he has experienced must be unhappy and sorrowful. He grows up in such a family, meets so much violence(May be, in that period, it is common)To say it exaggeratedly, there must be bad influences on his young heart. But, what he does surprises me one more time. He treats his sufferings in another way―to be sincere.I can’t really understand what he is thinking about, but I am deeply touched by his behavior. His tolerant with his wife―Pip’s sister, his friendly affection with Pip, even his sympathy with a prisoner that all express one thing ― sincerity. He is the harbor of soul for Pip. There is such a great difference between Joe and Pip’s ambition. What he tells us is that to be simple is the key to your happy life.Optimism is another spirit in his soul. He never gives in to the difficulties that he meets. Maybe, in his dictionary of life, there is no word with the meaning of shrinking back. He never worries about his lower grade life ,but faces up to it. For example, he only can read ”J” and ”O” befor e, because he has no chance to study in his childhood. But finally, he sets his mind to study and can write letters by himself.Although Joe is a person with only a little knowledge, what he owns is far more precious than many learned men. His pure heart will bring him great expectations. What he teaches us is that never to be taken away your pure heart and optimistic attitude towards life. There will be nothing difficult or miserable when you treat them with a sincere heart. To be simple, what you will gain is far beyond your imagination and you will find that life is just a game which is always filled with happiness and bliss!《远大前程》英文读后感篇5Impression of a book of Great Expectation Went to the bookstore during theholiday, I chose a book from a lot of world masterpieces, named Great Expectation, when I pick up this book, I have not expected that such an English book will have a so great impact on me, making my thoughts and feelings very deep, I think that theform and content of this book are all very outstanding. 6With so many famous masterpieces on the booklist,it is really a pretty hard job to chooseone to read first. After much hesitation and deeply thought, I finally decided to borrowGreat Expectations from the small library.Great Expectations is about love, family, and rejection asPip and Miss Havisham have bothbeen rejected in certain ways. Pip is a boy around 13 years old, easy to fright, and goesthrough his life suffering lots of sadness. He is in love with a girl named Estella and wantsher to find his love, but for him being shy and not showing himself to her, it makes it veryhard for him.Great Expectations was the penultimate novel pleted by the most popular novelist ofVictorian England,Charles Dickens. Born in Kent,England, in 1812 to a family of modestmeans but great pretensions,Dickens’s early life was marked by both humiliation andambition. Dickens never forgot the period of financial crisis during his childhood, whenfollowing his father’s bankruptcy, he was taken out of school and forced to work in ashoepolish warehouse.Pip meets an escaped convict,Magwitch, and gives him food, in an encounter that is tohaunt both their lives. When Pip receives riches from a mysterious benefactor he snobbishly abandons his friendsfor London society and his“great expectations”.I set up my mind to select it for the reason that I have read a brief introduction of thismasterpiece in my high school English textbook before. In addition, a Tale of Two Citieswhich is also written by Charles Dickens, the outstanding and special English writer, left mea wonderful and deep impression, when I finished reading the marvelous story.Of course,Great Expectations didn’t let me down, either. What’s more, the whole structureof the novel is well and elaborately designed. The plot is extremely attractive and full ofunexpected twists. Quite a few characters have a distinguishable personality. Moreover, thosewords andsentences are so beautiful and meaningful that I even took them down carefully inmy notebook. By reading them no less than three times,I have learned not only some newphrases and sentences, but also a philosophy of life.Among the characters, which impressed me most are not Pip and Estella who should be regardedas the leading roles, but Joe and Magwitch. I feel awfully sorry that I was not brave enoughto read the original edition that is as thick as a brick. Otherwise, I may appreciate Joe andMagwitch more.Yes, they are not the main characters in the novel. However, what they saidand what they did deeply touched me. It’s interesting, isn’t it? They are quite theopposite guys. One is a totally good man without the least bit of wickedness while the otheris a prisoner who is believed to have mitted every evil.I believe that everyone who reads the book is to like Joe. When he talked about his heavydrinking father who hit him a lot,he said he had a lot of love. Faced with his rude wife, hewould rather seem a bit weak or foolish than stand up to her and fight for himself. Knowingpeacockish Pip was ashamed of his uneducated manners, he left sadly and quietly. The worldrushes on over the strings of the lingering heart making the music of sadness. But when hewas informed of Pip’s illness,he immediately came to take good care of Pip.He is alwayscontributing everything and requiring nothing. Such a man is Joe, kind, tolerant andselfless. "Nothing is so mild and gentle as courage, nothing so cruel and pitiless ascowardice," says a wise author. However, why do I appreciate Magwitch, the bad guy? You may wonder. Indeed, Magwitch did alot of evil things when he was young. But how can you be unmoved when you get toknow thatthe old man kept himself going just by thinking of the boy who once did him a small favor? He lost his only daughter and Pip had no parents,so he considered himself as the boy’ssecond father, making up his mind to help his dear boy became a gentleman. He did every kindof job and led a hard life in Australia. At last he made a big fortune and promised himselfthat all the money would go to Pip.He could have led a better life in Australia ,but Ihechose to go back to London .with the simple intention of seeing Pip, he went back at the riskof being hanged! “whatever the fault he had from the start, remember, reader,he had a goodheart.” Joe used these words to describe his father. But I think these words can betterdescribe Magwitch. He lived with the fear of death all his life. Who shuts love out,in turnshall be shut outfrom love. However, thankfully, because Pip finally realized his goodheart, his ending was peaceful.Dickens has Pip as the writer and first person narrator of this account of his life'sexperiences, and the entire story is understood to have been written as a retrospective, rather than as a present tense narrative or a diary or journal. Still, though Pip "knows" howall the events in the story will turn out,he uses only very subtle foreshadowing so that welearn of events only when the Pip in the story does. Pip does, however, use the perspectiveof the bitter lessons he's learned to ment acidly on various actions and attitudes in hisearlier life.I know how to fully understand this novel, twice is far from enough. Pip,Estella, MissHavisham,Biddy even Mr Wemmick, every single character has a story that is well worth myattention.I love this novel so much that I am determined to read the original edition oneday. But before that day es,I willsee the movie Great Expectations first.Search for knowledge, read more, sit on your front porch and admire the view without payingattention to your needs. 7Impression of a book of 'Great Expectation' Went to the bookstore during theholiday, I chose a book from a lot of world masterpieces, named Great Expectation, when I pick up this book, I have not expected that such an English book will have a so great impact on me, making my thoughts and feelings very deep, I think that theform and content of this book are all very outstanding.

He is the greatest representative of English critical realism. Dickens was bornin a poor family. At the age of 12, his father was put in prison and young Dickens was sentto work in a factory. From 1827 to 1829, Dickens worked as a clerk in a low firm and lateras a newspaper reporter. Dickens was horned by the Queen of England three months beforehis death on June 9, 1810. The words of his grave read as follows “by his death, one ofEngland’s greatest writers is lost to the world.”He has many masterpieces, such as “A tale ofcities” “David Copperfield” “Hard time” “Oliver Twist” and so on. “Great Expectations”is one of his masterpieces. The story in this book happenedin middle of 19 century and itreflects the gap between the rich and the poor in the capitalistic society. The summary of the bookThis story tells us about a young man who wished for the ueal/imaginary lives, andeventually his hope was extinguished by the real life. Pip was an unfortunate boy. Hisparents both died when he was a baby. He was brought up by his elder sister and herhusband Joe Gargery. Joe was kind to Pip and he also wanted Pip to be a good blacksmith. But the emergence of Estella has changed his life. He fell in love with Estella and he wantedto be a gentleman for her. Then a mysterious person came to help him to realize his greatexpectations. At first Pip thought that it was Miss Havisham, a strange woman made plansfor him. But at last, it proved that an escaped convict who he had helped when he was alittle boy was his benefactor. When the escaped convict was arrested again, his expectationswere at an end. Finally he realized that he only wanted to be a gentleman but he had ignoredhis old friends. He came to the real life again eventually. After suffering so many pains heand Estella came together at last.My view on this story “Great Expectations”, I think there is an irony included in this title. It relates to some uealistic dreams. From this novel, I have learnt a lot.Firstly, I pick up several lessons from Pip. One can have great dreams, but we should achieve our dreams by our own effort instead of depending on other people. In this story, Pip had an uealistic dream. He didn’t want to be a poor blacksmith like Joe. He wanted to be upper class people, to be a gentleman and he imagined that there was someone had made a plan for him. It is true that Abel Magwitch helped him secretly. But when Abel Magwitch was arrested, it put an end to Pip’s great expectations. He had nothing left. And in this book, Herbert and Pip form a poignant contrast. Herbert made great efforts to realize his dreams. In the end, his business was doing well, and his company had offices overseas. Therefore, we should realize that if we want to achieve something or fulfill one of our ambitions, we must make efforts by ourselves. There is no one in the worldthat makes plans for us. And there is no short cut for success. Secondly, I have learned from Pip’s experience that we should be grateful to others. We know that Pip was brought up by his sister and Joe. And Biddy was also friendly to him when he was at home. But when he was helped by a mysterious person, he moved to London to learn being a gentleman. He began to be proud and look down upon those people at home. He wanted to forget his poor life and his poor friends. But when his “great expec tations” were ruined, it was still those people who helped him out of trouble. However, when he began to realize it, his sister has died; it was too late to say thanks to her. What I want to say is that no matter how successful we are, we should not be proud; we should not forget the people who had helped us, and return for them. If I have learned anything about giving thanks, it is this: give it now .Don’t hesitate until it is too late to give our thanks.Thirdly, I also learn some lessons from Miss Havisham, She is a woman full of hatred, and she lived in hatred for so many years. She brought Estella up in order to revenge on man. I think what she did is not worth at all. On one hand, she was not in real happiness, although she revenged on other people. On the other hand, she had ruined Estella’s life. In addition, she also madeother men miserable. As for as I’m concerned, if I was Miss Havisham, I will choose another different kind of life. I will make myself live better than before to prove that I can live better without that man. From her experience, I think we should learn to forgive, learn to give up some bad things that had happened. No matter what had happened in the past, we should not be always lost in the past and we are supposed to look forward, and continue our new life. There is no doubt that if she had chosen a positive way, she will have a satisfactory life. What’s more, when it comes to Estella, I want to say that we should live our own life, and do not only live up to others’expectations. We know that, Estella was brought up by Miss Havisham to revenge on man. She did everything that Miss Havisham told her. We can say that she was “made” by Miss Havisham, and she was proud, cold. At last, following Miss havisham’s requirements she married to a man she didn’t love at all. I think she lived an unhappy life. She only did as other people told her. And she didn’t do something what she liked.I think this kind of life is meaningless. We should have our freedom. It occurred to me that nowadays, parents have high expectations on their children. They decide so many things fortheir children without getting their children’s permission.I think children should have their choice of life. Parents should not put their children into cage. It is wise for them to set their children free to look for their own sky.In a word, from this book, I have learnt how to be myself, how to realize my dreams and how to live my own life.《》。
Great Expectations
Pip and Dickens’ social view
Pip: a metaphor for the urbanization during the period of industrialization The hard-working population on the British countryside which had a tradition of agricultural profession and culture The hope that industrialization and people’s decision to move into the cities had less of an emotional thought behind it. People knew that sometimes opinions about people in a higher social class and feelings about going to the city to work had to come second to putting food on the table for their family . A boy that had no fortune and had to make a living by being an apprentice to Joe, who was a black-smith.
Joe Gargery
How Pip became a real grown-up
Joe’s love for him
No matter how bad Pip treated Joe, Joe never stopped his love for Pip as a “friend” and even as a father.
Great Expectation
Great Expectation –Brings you to philosophy of lovePip, an orphan brought up by his sister, fell in love with Estella who was a noble girl when was employed by Miss Havisham. After the hope of entering the upper class varies from initiation to disillusionment, pip finally return to his original life. Pip’s “great expectation” turned to foam as well. But he found himself back and made peace with Estella. This is a fascinating novel that love run throughout the whole book. There are three loves in this book through which we can see Dickens’s view of love and his criticism of the society at that time.Pip & Estella“You are my good and evil. You are the best fantasy of my life”. Pip knew his love for Estella would hinder his expectation, lose control, destroy hope, and ultimately be destined to dismay and disappointment but he still plunged into it. However, that is a society of distinct bourgeois hierarchy which determines their love was unequal. So, when Pip was into Estella, his first feeling is a deep sense of inferiority. And that’s why Pip accepted stranger’s financial aid without any hesitation in order to bridge their gap. At first glance, this is a story about a teenager whose young dream shattered and loss of love; Take a closer look, though, and it revealed the corruption and darkness of the upper class and Pip represented the whole underclass.Havisham & CompeysonLove, sometimes let people rebirth, and sometimes push people to the death. Havisham, a middle-age woman, who contained a large amount of her father’s wealth was deceived by Compeyson who aimed for her money. From then on, her heart was dead and all the sense to the rest of her life was to cultivate her adopted daughter as a tool to retaliate man. The loss of love leaded her to abnormality of personality. But finally, Havisham chose to lay down the hatred and made a plea for forgiveness from Pip and Estella. The illusionary love was Dickens’s criticism of bourgeoisie’s detrimental effect. In the meantime, justice and kindness will never be absent.Joe & BiddyTheir love was plain but brilliant in the bottom society. And they were sober person in the chaotic society. Joe’s forbearance, kindness and optimism really attract the readers. He treated every person as his friend equally. Biddy was full of wisdom and benevolence. Joe and Biddy knew that love is irrelevant to money and status but sincerity and the touch of two souls. In a word, Love is unrelated to surrender and power and not go with the stream. Only built on the premise of everyone is equal and after experiencing everything in life can love becomes mature and firm.。
1After reading "Great Expectations", I was deeply moved by the story of Pip. The novel, written by Charles Dickens, takes us on a journey through the life of a poor rural boy who dreams of a better future.Pip starts off as a humble blacksmith's apprentice, living in a small village. His life takes a dramatic turn when he meets a mysterious benefactor who provides him with the means to rise in society. As Pip enters the world of wealth and privilege, he is faced with many challenges and temptations. One of the most striking aspects of Pip's journey is his struggle with the temptation of wealth and status. At first, he is dazzled by his newfound riches and becomes arrogant and self-centered. However, as he experiences the fickleness of society and the true nature of human relationships, he begins to question his values and priorities. This made me think about our own lives and the choices we make when faced with similar temptations. How often do we sacrifice our true selves for the sake of material possessions or social status?Another important theme in the novel is the power of dreams and ambition. Pip's desire to become a gentleman drives him to work hard and strive for a better life. Although he faces many setbacks along the way, henever gives up on his dream. This inspired me to pursue my own dreams with determination and perseverance, regardless of the obstacles that may lie ahead. Moreover, the novel also explores the complexity of human nature. Pip encounters a variety of characters, some kind and generous, while others are cruel and selfish. Through these interactions, he learns about the good and bad sides of human nature and grows as a person. This made me realize that we are all a mixture of virtues and vices, and that it is important to be aware of our own flaws and strive to become better people. In conclusion, "Great Expectations" is a powerful novel that offers many valuable lessons. It reminds us of the importance of staying true to ourselves, following our dreams, and understanding the complexity of human nature. Pip's journey is one that will stay with me for a long time, and I am grateful to Charles Dickens for creating such a remarkable work of literature.2After reading "Great Expectations", I was deeply moved by the vivid characters and profound themes in the novel. The story unfolds around Pip, a young boy with big dreams and aspirations. As Pip navigates through life, he encounters various characters who shape his understanding of the world and himself. One of the most memorable characters is Miss Havisham. Her tragicfate is a poignant reminder of the consequences of love gone wrong and the dangers of revenge. Miss Havisham was jilted on her wedding day and has spent the rest of her life in a state of bitterness and resentment. She has stopped time in her decaying mansion, surrounded by the remnants of her failed wedding. Her obsession with revenge has not only ruined her own life but also had a profound impact on those around her. Through Miss Havisham, we are made to reflect on the power of love and the destructive nature of holding on to grudges. In contrast, Joe Gargery represents the goodness and loyalty in human nature. Joe is Pip's kind and humble blacksmith brother-in-law. Despite his simple background, Joe has a heart of gold. He is always there for Pip, offering unconditional love and support. Joe's friendship and loyalty teach us the true meaning of friendship and the importance of being kind to others. His unwavering integrity stands in stark contrast to the greed and ambition that drive many of the other characters in the novel. The novel also makes us think about the nature of ambition and the pursuit of wealth. Pip's desire for a "great expectation" leads him down a path of self-discovery and growth. However, he soon realizes that true happiness does not lie in material possessions or social status but in the love and relationships we have. The journey of Pip from a poor country boy to a gentleman and back again shows us that wealth and status are fleeting, while true friendship and love are lasting. In conclusion, "Great Expectations" is a masterpiece that offers a profound insight into human nature and the complexities of life. Through its vivid characters and engaging story, the novel makes us think about love, revenge, friendship, and the true meaning of happiness. It is a reminder that we should cherish the people around us and not be swayed by the false promises of wealth and status.3After reading "Great Expectations", I was deeply moved by the story and couldn't help but think about the relationship between social class and personal destiny. The protagonist, Pip, starts off as a poor boy with humble beginnings. His encounter with Miss Havisham and Estella sets him on a path of trying to climb the social ladder. Pip's desire to become a gentleman and fit into the upper class is palpable throughout the novel. He goes through great lengths, receiving an anonymous benefactor's support and undergoing a transformation in his appearance and mannerisms. However, Pip's journey is not without its setbacks. As he tries to fit into the upper class, he realizes that it is not all he had imagined. The snobbery and coldness of the upper class people make him question his choices. He also discovers that his pursuit of social status has caused him to lose touch with his true self and his roots. This story reflects the harsh reality of social class in society. In manyways, social class can determine one's opportunities and prospects in life. Pip's struggle to break free from his lower-class background shows how difficult it can be to transcend social boundaries. It also highlights the unfairness and inequality that exist in society. In today's world, although we may not have the same rigid social class structure as in Pip's time, there are still significant differences in wealth and opportunity. We see people from different backgrounds facing different challenges and having different chances at success. However, we should not be discouraged by these differences.Rather than being fixated on social class, we should focus on our own personal growth and development. We can strive to acquire knowledge and skills, develop good character, and build meaningful relationships. These are the things that truly matter and can help us achieve our own "great expectations" regardless of our social background. Moreover, we should also work towards creating a more equal and just society where everyone has an equal opportunity to succeed. This means advocating for policies that promote education, equality, and social mobility. In conclusion, "Great Expectations" is a powerful novel that forces us to confront the complex relationship between social class and personal destiny. It reminds us that while social class may pose challenges, we have the power to shape our own lives through our choices and actions.4"Great Expectations" is a novel that delves deep into the themes of ambition, love, and the cost of growth. The story follows Pip, a young man who dreams of a better life and pursues his "great expectations."As Pip climbs the social ladder in his pursuit of a grand future, he loses many things along the way. He becomes estranged from his humble beginnings and the people who truly care about him. His values shift as he is influenced by the upper class, and he begins to lose sight of his true self. For example, he turns his back on Joe, his kind and honest blacksmith brother-in-law, in an attempt to fit in with the snobbish society. This shows how easily one can be swayed by ambition and forget the importance of loyalty and friendship. The love story in the novel also plays a significant role in Pip's growth. His love for Estella is both a source of inspiration and a source of pain. Estella, cold and distant, represents the unattainable ideal that Pip chases. Through his love for her, Pip experiences heartbreak and disappointment, but it also forces him to confront his own flaws and weaknesses. He realizes that true love is not about possession but about understanding and acceptance. In our own lives, we often face similar choices as Pip. The pursuit of success and a better future can sometimes lead us astray and make us lose touch with our roots and values. We may sacrifice our relationships, ourintegrity, and our happiness in the process. However, like Pip, we can learn from our mistakes and find our way back. We must remember to stay true to ourselves and not let ambition blind us to what really matters. We can also learn from Pip's journey that love is not always easy or straightforward. It can be a source of both joy and pain, but it is through love that we grow and become better people. Whether it is love for family, friends, or a romantic partner, love has the power to heal and transform us.In conclusion, "Great Expectations" is a powerful novel that reminds us of the cost of growth and the importance of staying true to ourselves. Pip's story serves as a cautionary tale for us all, showing us that while ambition can drive us forward, it is our values and relationships that give our lives meaning."5"Great Expectations" is a novel by Charles Dickens that has left a profound mark on me. The story follows the life of Pip, a young orphan who aspires to rise above his humble beginnings and achieve great things. The novel's literary value lies in its masterful narrative technique. Dickens weaves a complex web of events and characters, creating a vivid and immersive world. The story is told from Pip's perspective, allowing the reader to experience his joys, sorrows, and moral dilemmas firsthand. This narrative approach gives the novel a sense of authenticity and emotional depth. One of the most remarkable aspects of "Great Expectations" is its character development. Pip undergoes a significant transformation throughout the novel. He starts as a naive and innocent boy, but as he is exposed to the harsh realities of life, he becomes more jaded and self-centered. However, through a series of events, he learns the importance of kindness, loyalty, and forgiveness. The characters in the novel are complex and multi-dimensional, each with their own flaws and virtues. This makes them relatable and adds to the overall richness of the story. The novel also reflects on important moral issues that are still relevant in modern society. Pip's journey is filled with moral dilemmas, such as choosing between wealth and friendship, and doing what is right even when it is difficult. These dilemmas force him to confront his own values and beliefs, and ultimately lead him to make choices that shape his character. In a world where materialism and self-interest often prevail, "Great Expectations" serves as a reminder of the importance of moral integrity and compassion.Furthermore, the novel's exploration of class and social status is thought-provoking. Pip's desire to rise in society is driven by his longing for acceptance and respect. However, he soon realizes that true happiness cannot be found in material possessions or social status. Dickens' portrayal of the class divide in Victorian society is a poignant commentary on the human condition, and it raises questions about the nature of success andhappiness. In conclusion, "Great Expectations" is a timeless classic that continues to resonate with readers today. Its literary value lies in its captivating narrative, complex characters, and profound moral insights. The novel serves as a reminder that our actions have consequences, and that true happiness lies in our relationships with others and our moral choices. It is a must-read for anyone who appreciates great literature and is looking for a thought-provoking and emotionally engaging story.。
