Our friends are very important to us , just as the saying goes , “ If you tell your joy to your friend ,your joy will double .And if you pour your sorrow to your friend , your sorrow will be reduced by half .”We need to treasure our friends .S: Exactly, we need friends to share our experiences, our joy and sorrows. In the difficulties, our friends are usually the ones we turn to, for advice, for comfort and for courage. It’s unimaginable how one could live without friends.D: Yeah, ture friendship is really important. It is a plant of slow growth, which is based on warmth, trust and shared experience.S: By the way, do you know how to keep our friendship alive ?D: Remember important days in your friends’ live is can nurture friendship.S: What’s more, we can’t win a friend with gifts only.D: Yeah, to tell you the truth, I think truthfulness and tenderness are the two elements that keep friendship alive. We need to trust each other and to be of tenderness .S: You are right. Truthfulness and tenderness are of great value .I hope we both can keep them in our minds .2 Dealing with cultural differencesW: I was in bad mood today , It is upsetting to find that I unintentionally offended an American student . How ashamed I was .F: Oh , I’m sorry to hear that . You should have learned how to deal with cultural differences. It’s very important.W:I know… But have you known anything about cultural differences ?F: Let me tell you . Different cultures have their own rules of behavior. People from different cultural backgrounds may have very different beliefs, religions, customs and habits. Ignorance of cultural differences often causes misunderstanding, offense, or embarrassment in cross-cultural communication.W: I see , Do you mean that to avoid misunderstanding or giving unnecessary offense we must develop a cross-cultural perspective?F:Yes , We must remember that all cultures are equal, Having a respect for other cultures and learning about their basic characteristics are effective ways to promote international communication.W: I get it . People from different countries speak different languages , keep different value systems ,and have different ways of looking at things ,and we must respect them . right ?F: Right !3 MemoryF: I have a bad memory recently . Thanks for informing me of these .4 WealthW: F, you know, Wealth is usually associated with affluence, prosperity, and comfort, and to a lesser degree, with honor, respect and admiration. And I think the amount of money represents wealth best. Do you think so ?F: I’m afraid I can’t agree with the view you just expressed . Many of us think life would become easier and freer if we had more money , but in my mind , though money is crucial to people’s lives , it can’t represent how wealthy people are . There are other things , such as love, friendship and good health , that decide whether you are wealthy . not only the money .W: Well, but many a time , lack of money is the obstacle that prevents people from pursuing their cherished goals in life .Modern life is built around money .F: No one can deny that what you think is reasonable , but you need to know ,money isn't everything ,and it can be lost . Research has shown that smoke from the average cigarette contains around 4,000 chemicals, at least 43 of which cause cancer.W: Is smoking so serious ? IF: Of course ! So I’m strongly against smoking . Smoking not only does harms to yourself, but also to nonsmokers .Secondhand smoke is also a cause of lung cancer among nonsmokers . W: I see . I also class smoking as my enemy ,By the way , I never smoke in public areas , because some anti-smoking people and groups may punish me . I will try my best to quit it . F: It needs time , but I really hope that you can make it .6 AgingF: One of my father’s friends got serious lung cancer, and he has been in hospital for a long time, The doctor said that he would gone within four months . With advancing age major changes take place in the human body, such as the decline of hearing and vision, the inflexibility of blood vessels and so on. So , just face it with optimism .F;But I’m still scared . Do you think that science medicine can save one’s life and make him live longer ?W: It can do this on most occasions .but I think one wants to run in front of age , he must form healthy habits in life , such as exercise regularly, stay way of smoking , have a balanced diet and so on .Human life is too precious for us to terminate it .F: En , we can’t prevent aging from coming to us , but we can stop it from coming so fast . W: Yes , and a correct attitude toward aging is not to surrender in the face of time .7 AddictionW: I just learned from the TV that there are a large number of drug addiction people around us , especially young people , and the number is getting larger . It’s very scaring, do you think so ? F: Yes , I agree with you . Drug abuse is a serious social problem in the world today. Drugs that are commonly abused refer to heroin and cocaine.W: Why so many people , especially young people , take drugs ?F: Oh , some people take drugs to temporarily forget their problems , reduce stress, while some young people may try drugs out of curiosity , to make them look cool and so on .When they find themselves are addictive to drugs , a majority of them can’t get rid of them .W;And the TV said that use of these drugs often leads to chemical addiction, which in turn leads to serious health disorders, even death. Drug abuse often leads to crime.F: Yes, drug addiction threatens not only the lives of individual children and their families, but also the future of the country . The government should take effective measures to reduce the extent of the problem.8 Home schoolingW: have you heard of the home schooling?F: YES Home schooling is the education of children at home, typically by parents but sometimes by tutors, rather than in a formal setting of public or private school. Is it right? W: Right. Although prior to the introduction of compulsory school attendance laws, most childhood education occurred within the family or community So what do you think of the home schooling?F: I think it's really a stange way to learn.I can't understand why somebody would chose this way to teach their children. Can you tell me the benefit of home-schooling.W: Home schooling yields positive academic, social, emotional, and spiritual benefits for any family that is willing and prepared to give it a chance. There is also the benefit of reducing your childs exposure to peer pressure regarding drugs, alcohol, and sexual activity.F: Then as a matter of fact, there are several disadvantages and you need to find out if they outweigh the advantages in your particular situation.W: y ou mean children lack of connection with others?F: sure. The major disadvantage of home schooling seems to be the lack of socialization that it offers to the child. It certainly is true that the child will have less interaction with their peers than those who attend public school on a regular basis. One more disadvantage of home schooling is the cost. It can cost hundreds of dollars per year, just for you to be able to teach your child at home.W: child c In a word, every kind of education patterns has its advantage and disadvantage,so parents should choose the style that suits for your children on the basis of your family condtion. We believe every an be successful.9 Opinion PollsF: Do you know the thing that's always struck me as odd about opinion polls?W: What's that?F: The percentages. Like recently there was a survey about what people thought about traffic, and petrol prices, and public car parks. In some car parks it now costs something like 5 pounds to park a car for half an hour.W: Yeah, but I don't see what you're getting at.F: What I mean is the percentages in the results. So there might be 70% of people who complained about high petrol prices, and 60% who want to see the traffic reduced, and 65% who think car park charges are too high. Does that mean that there are 35% who actually think the charges are OK and would even be prepared to pay more, and another 30% who think petrol prices are OK? I mean that's absurd. I don't know anyone who doesn't think they're too high.W: Well, actually I think we should pay more.F: Come on, you're joking.W: I believe this opinion polls have reflect public opinions. it depends to a large extent on a scientific selection of the sample, good design of the questions. The polls give accurate datas and reliable information. It can express someone’s views. So you should try to change your mind and accept the truth.F: Well, anyway, I still can't believe that 30% of those people who said car park charges were OK.W:Well, maybe that's where you are wrong. Just think aboutthis more taxes should be charged on petrol, to discourage people from using cars, and a kind o f graded charging system for car parks depending on how far they are from the city center. And you'll realize that perhaps it's not so stupid as it sounds.10 Crime and PunishmentW: dear, my mobile phone was stolen yesterday! I was so upset.F:I am sorry to hear about that. But where have you been yesterday?W: mangrove forest, with my teachers and classmates.F: you should be careful when you go out to play. You know, the crime rate is rising rapidly. So me are crimes against property, and some are crimes against persons .Some involve both prope rty and people.!W:I know. I just don’t understand why they steal others’ possession without guilt. I do hope the y will have a strong punishmentF:I think Poverty is the mother of crime. Besides, the gap between the rich and the poor, poor education, and the lack of moral power are also related to the crimes.W: as well as the lack of effective enforcement of laws!F:you are right . as for the punishment. There should never be suspicion of capital punishment . Murderers whose motive is money should not get off lightly. Criminals must be made to see t he consequences of their crimes. "An eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth" is the very basis of jus tice.W:yes and Those who are lenient to criminals are unkind to innocent people.。

大学外语(四)口语题目及答案
1. Can a person rely on the welfare system for everything? Why? No, I think that he surely can’t rely on the welfare system for everything. Admittedly, the welfare system can help a person with some financial problems. Since a disabled person might not be able towork, the government can help give money to live. Nevertheless, money is not the only thing that a person needs in order to live. A person needs things ,such as excitement, strength, adventure and so on, for his soul. What’s more, everyone needs love, too. And a disabled person is not different. He needs these things and he must get them the same way that everyone else does. He must get them on his own. In all, a person can’t rely on the welfare system foreverything.2. Should we ignore our friends and family for the sake of our own interests ?In my view, life can be very busy, and it is good to stop and think more about the importance of our close relationships. Of course we shouldn’t ignore our friends and family members. Even though we are caught up in wishes to change the world or something like that, weshould all be careful how we act toward people close to us. The measures we should take are quite clear. Rather than world problems, we shouldfocus on problems within ourselves. Are we kind enough? Are we generous enough? These are the questions we should ask.1Following this, we should then try to make improvements, making ourselves better people. If we become good , we will then have a good influence on others, most on our family members and friends. They, our friends and family, must come before our own interests. We must love them whole-heartedly. We must find their needs and then work to satisfy those needs. We can have the best possible lives, if we put friends and family members before our interests.3. China has declared a war on corruption with a focus on corrupt government officials. Is it possible for China to end corruption?I am sure it is possible to end corruption because I believe in the Chinese people. Though there are exceptions, and those exceptions are causing problems now, I believe that most people are good and honest. What’s more, I believe that most Chinese people are brave. If asked by the government to watch out for and report corruption, most people will do so. They will report corruption wherever they see it. Then actions will be taken against corruption. Any plan that includes the Chinese people against corruption will work. I believe that ending corruption will be accomplished by China.4.Do you believe that people of different races are equal? Why?I am not a racist. So I believe people are all equal. First, groups are similar biologically. We all have the same basic features, but onlydiffer in very superficial ways, like color skin. Also, each group has a culture that has evolved and supported its people, sometimes for thousands of years. And related to this is that each one of these cultures, and each one of these people, is unique and, therefore, special. Each provides color to the world and makes the world a more interesting place.5. How long have you had your mobile phone and why do you choose it?Mobile phones benefit our lives a lot, obviously. Describe a book, a story or a movie you like most and its influence on your life.Oliver TwistHave you ever read Oliver Twist? What do you think it? Today I wantto share it with yours because it is like most on my life . Oliver Twist, one of the most famous works of Charles Dickens', is a novel reflecting the tragic fact of the life in Britain in 18th century. The author who was born in a poor family wrote this novel in his twenties with a viewto reveal the ugly masks of those cruel criminal s and to expose the horror and violence hidden underneath the narrow and dirty streets in London. To my disappointment, nowadays some people seem to doubt the existence of the goodness in humanity. They look down on people'shonesty and kindness, thinking it foolish of people to bewarm-hearted. As a result, they show no sympathy to those who arein trouble and seldom offer to help others. On the other hand, theyattach importance to money and benefit. In their opinion, money is the only real object while emotions and morality are nihility. If they cannot get profit from showing their 'kindness', they draw back when others are faced with trouble and even hit a man when he is down. They are one of the sorts that I really detest.7. Can you tell us your experience of making an excuse because you were late or had forgotten to do something?A child, the most worried is that every time to sleep and see the teacher's strict eyes, this time when the brain is rapidly rotating, to find a reasonable excuse for being late. One day, I was late for school, Mr. Smith who was my teacher was very angry with me. I immediately apologized for being late, and explained that my mother was ill in bed, so I had to look after her. Then I promised not to be late again. Finally, Mr. Smith forgave me for my sincere apology. 8. You are going to tell experience about your last time you ate out at a restaurantLast night we went to eat in a little restaurant near our school. It was not a good time for us to get there as we could find a seat. So we had to wait for about half an hour in front of a table which was in use by four customers. When we sat down and started to order from the menu ,we were told that three dishes we ordered were not available as the materials for these dishes were all used up. What adisappointment! We had no choice but to order a meat dish of spare-ribs and a vegetable dish of greens together with a bowl of rice for each of us. We were still hungry after the meal so we had to have some instant noodles after we returned to our dorm.9. Which city in your country attracts most visitors, why?As the captain of China, Beijing has been the most popular city of china. So more and more people want to visit Beijing. I think the best time to visit Beijing is spring ,for the weather of that time is very fine ,neither too hot nor too cold .The warm wind will make you feel happy. Many people visit Beijing for it's beautiful scene and cultural inheritance. If you want to have a enjoyable journey, I suggest you to pay a visit to the Great Wall, the Summer Palace ,the Olympic Park andmany other place. When you feel tired after one day's journey ,you can taste the "Noodles with Soy Bean Paste", a kind of traditional food in Beijing. There are many other things you can do in Beijing, as shopping in the big shopping mall, visit the different kinds park ,visit the "Si He Yuan "and so Beijing is China's second largest city, after Shanghai. It is a major transportation hub, with dozens of railways, roads and motorways passing through the city. It is also the focal point of many international flights to China. Beijing is recognized as the political, educational, and cultural center of the People's Republic of China, while Shanghai and HongKong predominate in economic fields. The city also has host the 2008 Summer Olympics.10. Please tell your experience about bargaining?Besides smiling a lot, it is important to keep the conversation going while actively pursuing your desired price. Keeping talking makes the seller feel more at ease and makes him/her confident that you are sincere with your offer. Don't ever go quiet, this makes the seller believe you have lost interest and he will no longer tend to your requests. Even if it's the perfect item, the moment the seller sees that wistful look in your eyes, they'll know they've got the upper hand. Appear interested, as if you're willing to buy the product if the price is right, but you can certainly live without it as well. Many people hesitate to haggle because they don't want to seem cheap. But are you really willing to pay top dollar just so you can preserve the esteem of total strangers? You're only meeting them this once, and you'll probably never meet them again. Even if you're shopping with people you know, they might raise an eyebrow when you start haggling, but they'll sure be jealous when you get a better price than they did! When the seller makes an offer that is almost what you want, look distressed and say "Oh, okay. Well, let me ask my husband/wife/mother/father. I've been dying to get one of these for months now, but they keep saying it's too expensive."If you have acell phone, pull it out and call your partner in crime, or evenfake the call if you have to: "Yes, but it's what I've been looking for...I don't know...OK...Yes, fine..." End your call, turn to the seller, and say "I can buy it for..." giving a price that is slightly below what they've offered. A lot of times, offering cash upfront will entice a retailer to meet your price. Split your cash in increments so that you can show the seller the money you're offering without them seeing how much more money you have sitting in your wallet.。

新编大学英语4口语话题
新编⼤学英语4⼝语话题第⼀单元:Discussion:1.How do College Students Spend Their Leisure Time?2.What are the most active and most passive activities people do?3.My Favorite PastimeQuestions:1.What is your favorite film?2.What kind of role does humor play in our daily life?3.How do people spend their holidays nowadays?4.What’s your plan for the coming summer holiday?5.Do you think humor is a key to getting along with others? Explain your answer.6.Talk about the book you read recently.第⼆单元:Discussion:1.Is writing better than calling? Give your reasons.2.Words I will never forget. (Power of words)Questions:1.Talk about the sentence that moved you the most.2.Talk about the sentence that encouraged you the most.3.What is the function of dialect? Should dialect be replaced by Mandarin?I think Mandarin is more useful. There are around 80 completely different dialects in China. If we don’t learn Mandarin, we may find it hard or even impossible to communicate with people from different parts of China. For example, last semester most of our classmates had a hard time in math class because the math teacher had so strong an accent that it prevented us from understanding his lecture. To some of us, his strong accent not only meant a lot of inconvenience but also led to our failure in the final.4.Talk about the power of words of encouragement.5.Do you think people need encouragement and praise? Why or why not?6.Do you often send or receive from your friends letters or notes? How do you feel when yousend or receive them?Sample 1:I usually send or receive letters to or from my parents once a month. I have many friends and classmates and we write each other letters. I am very happy when I receive their letters, and can’t wait to read them. Sometimes I can’t help laughing while reading because they tell me a joke or describe something interesting in the letter. After I send a letter, I will wait anxiously for a reply. I hope they enjoy my letters too, for I want to make them feel good.Sample2:There is no doubt that people need encouragement and praise. All of us would like to feel needed and admired. If we didn’t hear any words of encouragement or praise, how could we know that we were valued by people close to us? Besides, when I fail to do something successfully, I’ll feel depressed. If someone can comfort or console me at this moment, and giveme encouragement, they’ll probably make a big difference in my life. On the other hand, if I can encourage or cheer my friend.I’ll feel good about myself. So encouragement actually benefits people on both sides.第三单元:讨论话题同⽹络课堂布置的Questions:1.Is it true with Chinese students that boys do better in math and science, while girls havebetter verbal and reading skills? Expain your answer.Sample 1Yes, I think so. As far as I know, most boy students in China do better in math and science. It is fully demonstrated by the number of boy students who have won prizes in the Olympic Science Contests and by the ratio of boy students to girl students in science departments in colleges and universities.Sample 2I don’t think I can answer the question by a simple “yes”or “no”.With more girls receiving higher education and going to graduate school, it won’t be difficult to find girls who are really good in math and science courses. As we can see in our university, there are quite a few female math professors and also female professors specialized in science and engineering. Besides, many boys are found to have developed excellent language and reading skills.2.Can you think of any ways in which Chinese culture affects gender roles?Chinese culture also has stereotyped gender roles. Boys and girls are taught and expected to behave differently from each other both at home and at school. If they don’t fit into traditional gender mold, girls are said to be like boys and boys like girls. The following are the ways that culture or education affects gender roles.SampleBoys and girls are provided with different kinds of toys to play with: dolls and pretty things are for girls while toy cars and guns are for boys.SampleBoys are expected to play outdoors and girls, in most cases, indoors.SampleGirls are expected to be clean and neat, and well dressed and boys should be strong and tough, and can deal with difficulties SampleMales, especially in the country, are expected to be better educated than females and they should be more career-oriented to support the family and females are expected to support their husbands. There’s an old saying “having no skills and intelligence is a good virtue of women.”SampleWomen are expected to be quiet and shy while men are expected to be powerful and more aggressive.SampleWomen are expected to take good care of their children and do most of the housework while men are expected to be successful in their careersSampleWomen are expected to go home immediately after work while men may get back late in the evening after having dinner with their friends or colleagues.3.If you had to choose between a single-sex class and a co-educational one, which one wouldyou prefer to be taught in?A single-sex class is more preferable because 1) when boys are not around, we can have more opportunities to express ourselves / when girls are around, there are too many distractions;2) there wouldn't be sex-biased education;3) each gender’s strength and weakness can be considered accordingly.A co-educational class is preferable because 1) some students become bolder in the company of students of the opposite sex;2) it would be boring to have only boys or only girls in class;3) the outside world consists of two genders and we should prepare ourselves for that.4.What are the characteristics of the ideal wife and the ideal husband?5.In what ways do people see women and men as different?Sample:Most people think that women are more emotional and more compassionate than men. They are also viewed as better listeners and better able to do many things at once. Most of us believe women have better “people skills”.We all think that men have a more aggressive nature. They are also more willing to take risks than women. All of the girls in our group believe that men are self-centered.6.Work out for your teacher a list of suggestions for avoiding gender bias in theclassroom.Use inclusive language. “Y ou guys”may be a popular way of addressing groups, but it’s an example of gender bias.—Use examples that are gender balanced. If there are none in your textbooks, do some research to find some.— Search books, posters and other instructional materials for gender balance.— Try to put girls and boys in non-traditional situations, such as the placement of girls first in this sentence. Isn’t it normally boys, then girls?Make the classroom atmosphere one where both girls and boys areencouraged, questioned and reinforced.—Actively integrate groups by not allowing self-segregation.—Never use gender to group students.第四单元Discussion:1.How can schools and parents encourage students’ creativity both at school and at home?2.Try to compare the educational styles in China and America in terms of cultivatingcreativity.Questions:1.What is creativity according to the text?Creativity is the matter of using the resources one has to produce original ideas that are good for something. That is to say, one can think and solve problems in a new and original way based on his previous knowledge.2.Which should be emphasized in education, knowledge or creativity? Both are equally important, and no system should only emphasize one. Knowledge involves facts and information which are essential, but creativity allows you to do original things with your knowledge. If I had to emphasize one, I would choose creativity since it is more important than facts and figures which are useless if not to be applied to solve problems.3.Did your parents ever let you make decisions when you were very young? What do you think of your parent’s practice? No. They made the decision and I obeyed. If I did not obey, I would be punished. They meant well and wanted to teach me the right moral values and ways of behavior so that I wouldn’t make mistakes. But sometimes, I think they should have let me explore the world and discover things. I think that children are clever enough to think for themselves and should be encouraged to make their own decision. And they won’t feel uneasy or at a loss when their parents are not around.Y es. My parents, especially my father, favor a more democratic style of parenting. They seldom try to impose their own opinions on me and most of the time they let me make decisions on my own. Sometimes I even make painful and important decisions. For instance, as for the university I should enter and the major I should choose, I discussed these with them several times.I knew they’d like me to stay in my hometown, but they never told me this when they learned that I had decided to enter XX University. That’s why I’m here, in the university of my own choice.4.Did your parents allow you to speak to guests who came to your house? How did you feel if you were not allowed to?Y es. I could talk freely with the guests of our family, especially when the visitors were our relatives or close friends of my parents. It doesn’t mean I joined them all the time. I talked with them only about topics I knew about or I was interested in. If I had not been allowed to speak to them, I would have felt like a little child or an outsider even though I was not really young, and I would not have felt like part of the family. No, they never did. They maintained that what adults were talking about was none of a child’s business. And they also thought it was impolite for a child “to interfere with” adults’ business. So I was never allowed to be involved in their conversation. I felt I was neglected. In order to capture their attention, I deliberately became mischievous. As you can imagine, this kind of behavior brought about even worse situations on me.5. Do you agree with the author in saying “creativity is not something one is just born with, nor is it necessarily a characteristic of high intelligence”? Give your reasons.Sample1:I quite agree. Creativity is never a personal quality inherited from one’s parents. Rather, it’s cultivated as one grows up. His accumulated life experiences help in this process, so does the flexibility his parents allow him in letting him do what he likes. Second, high intelligence by no means equals creativity. A person of high intelligence may have exceptionally good memorizing and understanding abilities, but he doesn’t necessarily have good thinking skills. He may think in a conventional way.Sample 2:Sometimes I think creativity depends more on nature than on nurture. Most of us get the same education, yet we do not have the same level of creativity. I’d say some are really creative and others are not creative at all. How can we account for this phenomenon? Only nature is the answer.第五单元:Discussion1.Do you consider star athletes good role models for young people? Give reasons.2. The Athletes I Admire Most/ The sports I like mostQuestions:1.Nowadays, star athletes have not only acquired fame but also made a l ot of money. Do you think star athl etes really d eserve what they have got?Athl etes train very hard. The intensity is beyond what we can imagine. They get up very early in the morning and have a very vigorous training regime no matter how col d or hot it is. Coaches can be very harsh. In fact, very few athl etes can get good results in worl d-class competitions. What’s more, their sports life is comparatively short compared with pop stars, who d on’t train as hard as athl etes, but earn more and are popular for a l onger period of time. I d on’t think that’s fair. So in my opinion, star athl etes d eserve what they get.I d on’t think they d eserve what they get. Most jobs involve st rict t raining and are chall enging too, but few peopl e can make as much money as star athl etes d o. For exampl e, scientists spent time and money to get a good education, and they have to work very hard to be abl e to make achievements in different areas. Now think about what they get. They can never be as popular as star athl etes and their income means nothing as compared with athl etes. It’s really unfair.2.What are the most important qualities an athlete needs?●have great athletic skills;●be honest;●have strong willpower;●be loyal to his team;●be cooperative with his teammates;●have a great sense of responsibility;●be self-confident;●be courageous;●respect people, especially those who help him train3.Do you participate in any sports in your spare time? If yes, what are they? Andhow do you benefit from them? If not, what reasons would you give for not participating in any sports? My favo rite sport is jogging, because it costs no money and needs no equipment. It’s very convenient and can be done anytime and anywhere. While jogging I can enjoy the fresh air outside, and it is good for my health. It is a great pleasure to jog around the West Lake.Y es, I participate in quite a few sports activities. I love football and I am on the department team. I also enjoy rowing and have participated in several boat races on West Lake. I took part in the table tennis tournament last year and played a few matches. Jogging is my favorite sport. I jog as much as I can, and plan to enter a winter marathon race some day when I’m ready. I love competitions and enjoy competing with other students. Sports are fun and they make me feel better and keep me fit.4.According to Malone, why do some athletes not want to be role models? Some athletes don’t want to be role models because they’d like to have more privacy and freedom. They don’t want to be watched by the public all the time. Another reason is that people expect too much, and want perfection. But it is impossible to achieve that. So they don’t want to be role models, nor do they like too much pressure in their lives.5.In your opinion, is it right for the public to watch star athletes constantly? Give reasons.I don’t think it’s right, because athletes are humans, just like us. They, too, need privacy. They, too, will make mistakes. If they are constantly being watched by the public or exposed to the mass media, they will be driven crazy. Life will become hell. It is unfair to them. Star athletes are not saints, and will make mistakes sometimes. If the mass media expose everything they do, they will feel tense and pressured.第六单元:Discussions:1.why people would like to take risks.2.In a normal day, what are the three riskiest things you do?1.What should we do to manage risk in ordinary life? One way to manage risk in ordinary life is through rational planning. By considering alternatives and balancing the greatest or most likely risks against the greatest or most likely rewards, we can often make better decisions and give greater consideration to long-term outcomes. By always having a contingency plan in case our main plan fails, we can usually avoid catastrophes. But planning takes effort, and we must balance this effort against the pleasure of doing things spontaneously because they are not very important or not very risky, and plan other things carefully because they are very important or very risky.2.What are some of the negative effects of technology on our health? The negative effects of technology on health include: water/air/environmental pollution; more dangerous chemicals; increased amounts of garbage; increased rates of cancer and other deadly diseases; more stress and tension because the pace of life is faster.3.Are environment risks worth taking? Explain your answer.Y es, some risks are necessary to take for China to become more developed and to improve living conditions and material comfort for her people.Do you think people have interfered too much in the environment?Y es, Global warming is an example; the climate is changing all over the world; there have been many natural disasters; the oceans are polluted and fish populations have been affected; species of plants and animals are decreasing.4.How can we balance economic development and environment protection? There should be more regulations to control environmental damage. Foreign companiesshould not be allowed to do things in China that they are not allowed to do in their own countries. Schools should have more courses on the environment so that young people become better informed. If the environment is seriously polluted, young people won’t be able to live long and contribute as much as they wish.5.Why do most people fear airplane accidents more than car accidents?Even though fewer people die in air crash than in car accidents, people feel far less secure in the air than on the ground, perhaps because airplane crashes are almost always fatal. If you are in an airplane crash, you will die most probably, but you might not be killed in a car accident. Besides we are still more used to cars than airplanes.。

Talk about the power of humor and share the humorous story or typical joke withyour classmates.A: Why are you looking so upset, darling?B: I have failed my math examination, and you never know how hard I had been working on it!C: Well…….let’s have some fun. Just look at that young person with short hair and blue jeans, is it a boy or a girl?A: it’s a girl. She is my daughter.C: oh, I am sorry sir, I didn’t know that you were her fatherD: I am not, I am her mother.B: Oh, come on , it’s not a proper time to tell jokes.D: Really? Do you know that our neighbor Mrs. Smith has a perfect son?B: Does he smoke?A: No, he doesn’t.B: Does he drink?C: No, he doesn’t..B: Does he back home late?A: No, he doesn’t.B: Wow, then he is perfect indeed. How old is he?D: He will be six months old next Wednesday.B: Ha-ha.. That’s funny. Thank you for comforting me.C: You will feel good every time you hear jokes.D: yeah, this is the power of humor that can entertain people and relieve our stress. And it is beneficial to our physical and mental health.C: What’s more, humor can contract the distance between people and regulate the atmosphere.A: But only humor itself is not enough ,we should focus more on the way we express it. C: That is right. Sometimes one’s h umor can be ridiculous and make people embarrassed. So we should not only acknowledge the power of humor ,but also use it properly. What’s is more important, study/work or leisure-time activities? Can they reinforceeach other?A: oh, B, you look so tired! What are you doing these days?B: I am working on my paper. I have stayed up for several days, collecting information and writing the dissertation, which I have to defend before a group of experts.C: you’re really hard-working! But in my opinion, you should spend more time on leisure-time activities. we are in our twenties, we are bound to enjoy the youth.D: Me, too. It’s really nice when I went camping with my friends. My soul is pure, when I lie on the grass, and enjoy the sunshine.A: that sound really good! But I think studying is more important. However, learning is the first duty of studying. Maybe you should set a reasonable schedule and spare some time relaxing. After all, combining exertion is very important.B: maybe you’re right, and as far as I’m concerned, I should have a sleep at first. After having enough rest, I’d like to go out to play basketball.C: en… actually, study and leisure activities quite reinforce each other. Because of playing, my grade is not good, as I used to be. But B, too much work brings to much pressure, as the saying goes: much work and no play make Jake a dull boy. As a result, you should pay attention to your health.A: I think so. Alternating work with rest is very important. You are able to work efficiently after relaxing for a reasonable amount of time.B: I see…overdoing ruins my health. I’ll take you advice, thanks. Is letter writing better than calling?A: With the rapid development of modern technology, cell phones have extremely been prevalent in our lives, and they bring us lots of convince ang entertainment. But when it comes to the problem whether writing is better than calling, people’s opinions vary from one to another.B: In my opinion, I attach much significance to writing. I think language is a magical treasure because language can transform the distance between people even those who haven’t seen each other before.C: I don’t think so. During the calling, we usually choose those brief words to express our meaning. That is to say, we use t he least words to express the most information. It’s more convenient and it can save much time than writing.D: Yes, I agree with you. We don't need to prepare the envelope, paper or stamp.Instead,we only need to press few buttons to have a happy conversation whenever or wherever we want.B: However, no matter how brief the note is, we can easily find what emotion it wants to convey, sometimes it delivers inspiring, confident, encouraging, concerning and so on. A: Maybe you are right. Making a call needs words too, but it seems that the magical effect of words or language reflects more obviously in writing. Don’t you think so?D: Calling may let people feel more like in a face to face conversation. In this way, is there any different that exists between calling and live conversation? The answer must be positive.C: On the other hand, writing takes somehow more time than calling. There is no doubt that talking is always quicker writing. What’s more, after you write a letter, it takes more time to send it to the right person.D: But as an old saying goes “Every coin has two sides.” Phone calls can bring us not only benefits but also electromagnetic radiation. The increasing of cancer rates should has something to do with it.C: Someone who isn't good at talking prefers writing. Instead of bad calling, there is no doubt that writing is much better. By the contrast, someone who has a gift for speech must do better in calling than writing.B: There is no doubt that writing can help us express what we are too embarrassed or shy to say face to face. But it disadvantage is also obvious. It takes us too much time in writing a letter and the delivery on the way to its destinationA: Like different people have different personalities, different people have different reactions to writing and calling. How come we make such an absolute conclusion? As far as I am concerned, no matter writing or calling, they can be useful if they're sincere. How to avoid gender bias in the classroom?A: Hey,girls. In the long history of China, there is a cultural bias in education that favors boys over girls. So I think it influences our education today.B:But I didn’t experience the unfair treatment. Many school students are treated equally.Girls also can do well in some ares.C:Through this phenomenon is changing, the research showed that many teachers are likely to call on males in class far more than on female students unconsciously.D:Oh,this has a tremendous impact on the learning process for,in general, those students who become active classroom participants develop more positive attitudes and go on to higher achievement.A:Ok,but how can we diminish this phenomenon totally. As for our girls,we should look at us as boys.We can do everything where boys are always do better than girls. We need firmly believe in ourselves.B:Then, teachers shouldn’t suppose that boys will do better in the “hard”,”masculine”subjects of math example of a self-fulfilling prophecy.C:For boys, they needn’t be more active than girls.Because gender roles are taught unconsciously,or indirectly.D:Besides, for parents, they grow the children up which encourage sons and daughters go outside and don’t fear the world.A:I can’t agree with anymore. If we want to diminish this phenomenon. We not only change our own opinions ,but also change the view of our society .B:Emmm…except changing ourselves opinions. Our early education appears to be nonsexist,so both girls and boys do equally well in subjects.C:Yeah, that sounds very reasonable. What’s more, the child mustn’t be told by others how to act in an appropriately feminine or masculine.D:Yes, If we want to completely eliminate the gender gap must grab from childhood.Which one would you prefer to be taught in, single-sex class or co-educationalone?A: B, I heard that you were in a single-sex school in your high school time? Is there are something different between the single-sex schools and the co-educational school?B: Yeah… It is a strict school. What’s more, tuition is very high.C: It seems to be so. I also heard that most of these girls who study in single-sex school from a rich family. Therefore, the phenomenon of comparisons is very serious.D: I think single-sex school may be more pure. Professor’s courses may well suit for girls. A: I think so. There will be so many differences b etween girls and boys’ interests. In co-educational schools, boys are more likely to speak out their ideas, and the courses are designed much suitable for boys.B: My courses in senior high school have many differences from yours. We went to classes like yours. But we also go to physique class.C: Ah, no wonder you're so lady. By the way, since almost every single-sex school asks students to live in school, and then are there many lesbians.D: There are many Lesbian in South Korea’s classic horror film <Wh ispering. Corridor>A: Oh, I just thought it was a pity that I didn’t go to the single–sex schools, but now, it seems that the co-educational schools are better.B: I think living in campus is to avoid touching society early. That can make us concentrating on study more easily.C: If possible, I hope to study in a single-sex school, so I am more likely to be an elegant and powerful woman.D: I still prefer co-educational school, in these schools we can better cooperate with others, and it is benefit for us to enter into the society in the future.A: I also like co-educational schools. If girls can only compete with each other instead of boys, they may go to extremes.B: The experience of studying in girls’ school made me more independent. Because there are no boys in the school, many physical experiments I should do by myself. I think studying in girl’s school is good.C: No matter single-sex class or co-educational one, they are the place to study in.D: En, different people have different situations, we should choose the school which benefit us.What do you think parents can do at home to encourage a child's creativity? B: hey, guysC, D: hi, BA: Hi, B, where did you go last weekend? We had planted to go shopping with you, but I didn’t see you anywhere.B: well, A. I went to help my little cousin with his mathematics last weekend . He is just 5 years old. But he has to learn many subjects, such as Chinese, English, math, piano and so on. As we all know, creativity is the key to a brighter future. But many parents don’t know how to encourage children’s creativity? So they let their children to join in many remedial classes.C: Nowadays, creativity is important in our life and production. As for a child, parents’ encouragement and guide is essential. What do you think parents can do at home T o encourage a child’s creativity?D: First, parents should discover the interest of their children. and encourage them to try it. only the children do their loving things, will they do those well. Then, created more opportunity for them to express new things.A; What’s more, providing a peaceful environment is the most important thing. finally, parents ought to communicate with children in their perspective sometimes.B: yes, I agree with all of what you said. But I think that parents can do some specific practices at home to encourage creativity. They can involve children in decision making if the problem is appropriate, asking the child for suggestions. What about you , C?C: Parents can show their own creativity for children .For example, they can create some new things that children haven't seen before. Of course this isn't an easy thing.D: what you said is really a effective method. And it’s extremely difficult to make it. However, the parents can do some easy things which have the same effect. Such as, giving the children property praise, when children have some new opinions. Help them reading some books about inventions.A: ok, maybe, the most point is give the children enough freedom to do what ever they want to do, and always cheer them up when they get even little progress.Which should be emphasized in education, knowledge or creativity?A: Yesterday, one of my friends told me that her essay was sent back. And the teacher reminded her that the essay should be more creative. From this case, I hold that creativity is important.B: Yeah. And in general, both knowledge and creativity are very significant. However, compared to knowledge, I believe that we should attach more importance to creativity in the process of studying.C: I don’t agree with you. I think we should pay more attention to knowledge. Some people may argue that creativity is more important for us, especially for Chinese students. But what I want to say is that creativity is often based on the knowledge you obtain.D: Great minds think alike. As we all know, knowledge is the key of education. And knowledge can help us know more about the outside world. Above all, I think knowledge is more important to us.A: But as for me, with the development of society and cultural communications, I figure that creativity should be emphasized. In my view, creativity is highly fundamental in every aspect. Everyone likes unique ideas.B: I’m with you. If there is no creativity, our society will stop developing. Creati vity is the ability to learn from Nature and to use one’s imagination. Without creativity, the life will not be colorful and meaningful.C: But, you can do nothing if you only have creativity. I mean if your creativity reaches beyond your knowledge, then your creativity may just be a fantasy.D: Absolutely right. One couldn’t have succeeded without knowledge. Besides, creative thinking is likely to occur on the basis of enough knowledge.A:Oh, this idea seems reasonable. Can you show an example to us?C: O f course, For example, if Bill Gates hadn’t got the knowledge about computer in his early time, how could he come up with those amazingly creative ideas and how could he carry them out?B: As you say, if Bill Gates weren’t creative, no matter how much know ledge he had acquired about computer, it was surely impossible for him to carry out his ideas.A: Wait, wait, your opinions really makes me confused.D: As we all know, knowledge belongs to us forever and it will not be stolen by others and we can use it whenever we want. Creativity is just a way of using our knowledge.B: In my view, with the development of society, the one who has original ideas will win more chances in competitions.A: Why don’t we make a balance between the creativity and knowledge? You can’t do anything just with one of them. Only by the combination of creativity and knowledge, can we better ourselves.C: Maybe you are right, but I still hold my view.should star athletes be role models, do they deserve so much?A: hey, guys. You know what, David Beckham makes 42 million dollars a single year.B: Wow, that’s a lot of money.C: It’s unfair that they athletes earn almost 5 thousand times the money as much as I do. They don’t deserve that much.D: I agree. We pay them to watch their lives to entertain ourselves. But now they want privacy. And if they act inappropriately and we criticize them, they would say, it’s none of your business. I mean. Kids are watching. Being famous equals being a role model.B: but being good at kicking balls doesn’t necessarily mean a good person. Besides, they work harder than us. And they are under unbelievably heavy pressure. Definitely they deserve more.A: I’m with you. Kids should make someone else as role models. Maybe their teachers,,parents or the nice old lady across the street. B: and if being a star athlete means that you have to change your personality, what’s the point in making that much money.C: we are not asking them to change their personality. we just want them to watch their behaviors in public. Kids like to imitate their favorite stars.D: and if they were caught taking drugs, kids may think it’s cool and want to have a try. A: that’s kind of true. But they are real people. Nobody will want to be watched all the time. B: it seems that the debate will on forever.C: that’s where we all agree.A .D: HahaWhat are your favorite sports and how do you benefit from them?B,c,d: hi , A.A: hey ,guysB:A, we guys wants to play basketball ,would you like to join us?A: I am so sorry ,B.It has been cold these days. And I prefer to stay at my dormitory the whole day and don’t want to move anymore.B: Oh, why not go out to do some sports? Always staying at dormitory and do less exercise are easy to catch a cold.C:I can’t agree more. I used to be so lazy that I seldom do exercise. And because of this, I caught a cold easily. Therefore the doctor advised that I should have done more exercise. After follow the doctor’s suggestions, I am in shape. Now I run everyday!D: for me, I like to participate in many sports activities. Among them, basketball is my favorite. I fall in love with it the first time I touch it. I really enjoy the feeling when I shoot the ball right in the basket. It brings me much confidence not only in basketball but also in my real life.A: wow, so cool! I also have my favorite sport—volleyball. I’ve chosen it as my sport selective course in this semester. It has a great attraction to me when I was still a little girl.I like running in the sunshine and enjoy the feeling of dripping with s weat. If it wasn’t so cold these days, I would play it outdoors every week!B: Amazing! For me, I really enjoy skating. Most of you may think it is a very costly and dangerous sport. Yes, it is very expensive and you may break a leg doing it. But I really like it because it is very exciting. When you skate, you may felt you’re flying like a bird, that kind of feeling is very fantastic.C: so do running!D: I agree you all. Physical exercises benefit people in many aspects. As regards to basketball, if I can keep playing it everyday or just once a week, I can definitely improvemy health condition.A: Yeah, sports are interesting. Volleyball always makes me feel better and keep fit.B: so no matter what the weather look like, how cold it is, all of us had better share in mind that don’t never give up exercise.C: come on , A. let us play basketball together!A:ok ,let’s go !。
