It was still too early for me to have my evening meal, so I walked along the seafront (滨海马路)for about an hour until I began to feel hungry. By that time I was not far from a favorite restaurant of mine, where I often went to eat two or three times a week.I knew the owner well and frequently complimented (赞美,恭维)him on his excellent cooking.I went into the restaurant, which was already crowded, and ordered my meal. While I was waiting for the soup to arrive, I looked around to see if I knew anyone in the restaurant. It was then that I noticed that a man sitting at a corner table near the door kept glancing in my direction, as if he knew me, I certainly did not know him, for I never forgot a face. The man had a newspaper open in front of him, which he was pretending to read, though all the while I could see that he was keeping an eye on me. When the waiter brought my soup, the man was clearly puzzled by the familiar way in which the waiter and I addressed each other. He became even more puzzled as time went on and it grew more and more obvious that I was well known in the restaurant. Eventually he got up and went into the kitchen. After a few minutes he came out again, paid his bill and left without another glance in my direction. When I had finished and was about to pay my bill, I called the owner of the restaurant over and asked him what the man had wanted. The owner was a little embarrassed by my question and at first did not want to tell me. I insisted. "Well,” he said, “that man was a detective.M“Really?” I said, considerably surprised. "He followed you here because he thought you were a man he was looking for,” the owner of the restaurant said. “When he came into the kitchen, he showed me a photograph of the wanted man. He certainly looked like you! Of course, since we know you here, I was able to convince him that he had madea mistake.M“It's lucky I came to a restaurant where I am known,” I said, “otherwise I might have been arrested!"1. When the author got to his favorite restaurant, it was.A) already nine o'clockB) eight o'clock on the dotC) about two minutes past eightD) slightly later than eight o'clock2. According to the text, if the author had been a stranger in the restaurant, he would have been.A) taken to courtB) followedC) capturedD) sentenced to a few years5 imprisonmentA very important world problem is the rapidly increasing pressure of population on land and on land resources. It is not so much the actual population of the world but its rate of increase which is important. It works out to be about 1.6 per cent per annum net increase. In terms of numbers this means something like forty to fifty-five million additional people every year. Canada has a population of twenty million-rather less than six months1 climb in world population. Take Australia. There are ten million people in Australia. So, it takes the world less than three months to add to itself a population which peoples that vast country. Let us take our own crowded country-England and Wales: forty-five to fifty million people—just about a year's supply.By this time tomorrow, and every day, there will be added to the earth about 120X)00 extra people, just about the population of the city of York. This enormous increase of population will create immense problems. By A.D. 2000, unless something desperate happens, there will be as many as 7,000,000,000 people on the surface of this earth! So this is a problem which you arc going to see in your lifetime. Why is this enormous increase in population taking place? It is really due to the spread of the knowledge and the practice of what is coming to be called Death Control. Death Control is something rather different from Birth Control. Death Control recognizes the work of the doctors and the nurses and the hospitals and the health services in keeping alive people who, a few years ago, would have died of some of the incredibly serious killing diseases, as they used to be. Squalid conditions, which wc can remedy by an improved standard of living, caused a lot of disease and dirt. Medical examinations at school catch diseases early and ensure healthier school children. Scientists are at work stamping our malaria and other more deadly diseases. If you are seriously ill there is an ambulance to take you to a modern hospital. Medical care helps to keep people alive longer. We used to think seventy was a good age; now eighty, ninety, it may be, arc coming to be recognized as a normal age for human beings. People are living longer because of this Death Control, and fewer children are dying, so the populationof the world is shooting up.Imagine the position if you and I and everyone else living on earth shared the surface between us. How much should we have each? It would be just over twelve acres~the sort of size of a small holding. But not all that is useful land which is going to produce food. We can cut out one-fifth of it, for example, as being too cold. That is land which is covered with ice and snow-Antarctica and Greenland and the great frozen areas of northern Canada. Then we can cut out another fifth as being too dry—the great deserts of the world like the Sahara and the heart of Australia and other areas where there is no known water supply to feed crops and so to produce food. Then we can cut out another fifth as being too mountainous or with too great an elevation above sea level. Then we can cut out another tenth as land which has insufficient soil, probably just rock at the surface. Now, out of the twelve acres only about four are left as suitable for producing food.. But not all that is used. We’re taught that we should get seven or eight hours a night, but a lot of us get by just fine on less, and some of us actually sleep too much. A study out of the University of Buffalo reported that people who routinely sleep more than eight hours a day and are still tired are nearly three times as likely to dir of stroke---probably as a result of anunderlying disorder that keeps them from sleeping soundly.Doctors have their own special sleep problems. Residents are famously short of sleep. It is not unusual for them to work 40 hours in a row without rest. They are not in the least worried about it, confident they can still deliver the highest quality of medical care. But an article in the Journal of the American Medical Association points out that in the morning after 24 hours of sleeplessness, a person’s motor performance is comparable to that of someone who is drunk. Curiously, surgeons who believe that operating under the influence of alcohol is grounds for sacking often don’t think twice about operating without enough sleep.“I could tell you horror stories, ”says Jaya Agrawal, president of the American Medical Student Association, which runs a website for residents. Some are terrifying. “I was operating after being up for over 36 hours, “ one writes. “ I literally fell asleep standing up and nearly planted my face into the wound.”“ Practically every surgical resident I know has fallen asleep at the wheel driving home from work,” writes another. “I know of three who have hit parked cars. Another hit a ‘ Jersey gate’ on the New Jersey Expressway, going 105km/h.”“Your own patients have become the enemy,” writes a third, because they are “the one thing that stands between you and a few hours of sleep.”The U.S. controls the hours of pilots and truck drivers. But until such a system is in place for doctors, patients are on their own. People use them on trains and airplanes, in airports and hotels. These laptops connect people to their workplace. In the United States today, laptops also connect students to their classrooms.Westlake College in Virginia will start a laptop computer programthat allows students to do schoolwork anywhere they want. Within five years, each of the 15 000 students at the college will receive a laptop. The laptops are part of a 510 million computer program at Westlake, a 110-year-old college. The students with laptops will also have access to the Internet. In addition, they will be able to use e-mail to "speak" with their teachers, their classmates, and their families. However, the most important part of the laptop program is that students will be able to use computers without going to computer labs. They can work with it at home, in a fast-food restaurant or under the trees——anywhere at all!Because of the many changes in computer technology, laptop use in higher education, such as colleges and universities, is workable. As laptops become more powerful, they become more similar to desktop computers. In addition, the portable computers can connect students to not only the Internet, but also libraries and other resources. State higher education officials are studying how laptops can help students. State officials are testing laptop programs at other universities, too.At Westlake College, more than 60 percent of the staff use computers. In ancient times the most important examinations were spoken, not written. In the schools of ancient Greece and Rome, testing usually consisted of saying poetry aloud or giving speeches. In the European universities of the Middle Ages, students who were working for advanced degrees had to discuss questions in their Field of studywith people who had made a special study of the subject. This custom exists today as part of the process of testing candidates for the doctor''s degree.Generally, however, modern examinations are written. The written examination, where all students are tested on the same questions, was probably not known until the nineteenth century. Perhaps it came into existence with the great increase in population and the developmentof modern industry. A room full of candidates for a state examination, timed exactly by electric clocks and carefully watched over by managers, resembles a group of workers at an automobile factory. Certainly, during examinations teachers and students are expected to act like machines. One type of test is sometimes called an "objective" test. It is intended to deal with facts, not personal opinions. To make up an objective test the teacher writes a series of questions, each of which has only one correct answer. Along with each question the teacher writes the correct answer and also three statements that look like answers to students who have not learned the material properly.(1). In the Middle Ages students _______.A. took objective testsB. were timed by clocksC. specialized in one subjectD. never wrote exams(2). It may be concluded that testing ______.A. should test only opinionsB. should always be writtenC. has changed since the Middle AgesD. is given only in factories3.Motor vehicles powered by the internal combustion engines are responsible for over 80 percent of the deadly carbon monoxide as well as the cancer-causing substances in the air. Eighty-nine percent of the vehicles on the road in Massachusetts are privately owned and are often operated with only one person in the car. If people would use public transportation instead of their cars, air pollution levels could be significantly lowered. Thirty percent of the land in downtown Boston is devoted to cars. Where there are garages, there could be gardens. Where there are highways, there should be homes and places to work and play. Studies show that people today show a greater hearing loss with age than ever before. Much of this is dueto car-horns, loud engines and general traffic noise. The cost of a personal car is high to the individual. The average person pays about $2,000 per car per year in gasoline, insurance, taxes, and maintenance. But for society as a whole, personal cars are a luxury we cannot afford. We pay in death from auto accidents, in poor health from air pollution, in loss of hearing from noise pollution, and in the destruction of our cities by the ever-increasing number of highways.(1). It is ____ that are the main cause of the air pollution in Boston.A. vehicles in generalB. the public transportation systemsC. carbon monoxidesD. personal motor vehicles(2). It is implied but not stated that ______.A. garages, highways and parking areas occupy nearly one third of the total Boston downtown area.B. because of highways, people in Boston have no more homes and places to live, work and play.C. C garages have replaced most of the gardens in BostonD. Boston is the most seriously polluted city in the U.S.(3). According to the last paragraph, ______.A. the cost of personal cars is high to the individuals but not to the societyB. an average car costs about $2,000 inBostonC. personal cars are so expensive that most people cannot affordD. society as a whole suffers much from the ever-increasing number of cars(4). The writer’s purpose in writing this article is to _____.A. remind people of the danger of air pollutionB. warn people of the danger of accidentsC. urge people to use private cars as less as possibleD. ask the Boston government to build more homes and gardens(5). The best title for this passage is “ ______.”A. Air Pollution in BostonB. More Homes, More Plays for PeopleC. Cars Are Too ExpensiveD. Public Transportation, A Solution to Air Pollution4."The pen is more powerful than the sword (剑)." There have been many writers who used their pens to fight things that were wrong. Mrs. Harriet Beecher Stowe was one of them. She was born in the USA in 1811. One of her books not only made herfamous but has been described as one that excited the world, and was helpful in causing a civil war and freezing the slaves. The civil war was the American Civil War of 1861, in which the Northern States fought the Southern States and finally won. This book was named "Uncle Tom''''s Cabin". There was time when every English-speaking man, woman, and child has read this novel that did so much to stop slavery. Not many people read it today, but it isstill very interesting. The book has shown us how a warm-hearted writer can arouse (唤起) people''''s sympathies (同情). The writer herself had neither been to the Southern States nor been a slave. The Southern Americans were very angry at the novel, which they said did not at all represent (代表) true state of affairs, but the Northern Americans were wildly excited over it and were so inspired (激励) by it that they-were ready to go to war to set the slaves free.(1). It was a tiresome walk from one end of the city to another and to sit among adults was uninteresting. I was the youngest in the class, so the friendship I knew at school was absent.I put up with (忍受) it for a short period. It was too long a walk on cold winter''s nights and it was hard to put my heart into Shakespeare with wet shoes and trousers. So I continued reading books and started writing poetry at home.By chance, I won some prizes and awards (奖) for literature. A young woman from a TV company came to the college one day. She told me that I had won a national poetry award. I stared at her in astonishment and disbelief. She wanted to make a short film about me, to which I said, "No, I couldn'' t do that." Not that I had any real excuse, I was just frightened. In the end she persuaded me that 1 should do it the following day.So I did. They made a short film of me reading one of my poems and I became more interested in literature than ever. I wondered what I should do after this, and decided some weeks later that 1 could not imagine myself spending the rest of my days dealing with machines. So one evening, I hesitatingly told my parents that I wanted to return to school. They were greatly surprised and, I think, a little afraid but they did not try to persuade me not to, they wanted to know if I was sure, if I knew what it meant and whether I realized that if I gave up my job training, it would be verydifficult to get a good job. But nothing could stop me, and they asked about the matter no further.(1). Which of the following has most probably been discussed in this passage? ( )A. The writer''s unhappy childhood.B. Then life is no longer difficult. Most people do not fully see this truth. Instead they complain about their problems and difficulties as if life should be easy. It seems to them that difficulties represent ( 代表 ) a special kind of suffering especially forced upon them or else upon their families, their class, or even their nation. What makes life difficult is the process of facing and solving problems and it is a painful one. Problems, depending on their nature, cause us sadness or, loneliness or regret or anger of fear. These are uncomfortable feelings, often as painful as any kind of physical pain. And since life causes an endless series of problems, life is always difficult and is full of pain as well as joy.Yet, it is in this whole process of solving problems that life has its meaning. Problems are the serious test that tells us success from failure. When we desire to encourage the growth of human spirit, we encourage the human ability to solve problems, just as in school we set problems for our children to solve. It is through the pain of meeting and working out problems that we learn. As Benjamin Franklin said, "Those things that hurt, instruct." It is for this reason that wise people learn not to fear but to welcome the pain of problems.(1). Reading comprehension:Passage OneW hat happens when employees have access to their company's financial information over an intranet (a network inside the company)? The company grows. There was widespread fear and worry in our company when we decided to putall our financial information, including salaries, on our wide area network (W AN) in 1987 and then on our intranet in the early '90s, People feared our competitors would get the numbers and use them against us —to scare our customers, steal our employees, or attempt some otherunimaginably horrible tricks. But that has never happened. And I don't believe it will.Back in 1968, when I started my company, now an $ 11-million engineering-design firm, out of my house in Blacksburg, V irginia, my wife did the books. Later an employee took them over. As we added employees here and there, we saw no reason to keep any secrets. We just left the books open wherever they were last used. It wasn't until a business writer told me, "Oh that's what we call open-book management," that I knew there was a name for what we did and that it was something unusual. As we grew and opened five branch offices — three in V irginia, one in Tennessee, and one in North Carolina —this casual system was no longer possible. But we knew we wanted to continue the open style. I can't say we're always more profitable because of OBM; we have the same ups and downs as our competitors. And I can't say we are always happier; we have the same quarrels as in other workplaces. But we do have a great deal of trust here, and our employees stick with us. When we have tough financial times, our 170 employers know that nobody's drawing off money from the company for private purposes and that they've got to make the pie bigger if they're going to get a bigger price.1. From the passage we can learn that ____.A. most business firms have adopted OBMB. it was very unusual for business firms to make known their financial informationC. it is a good thing to let your competitors know your financial informationD. OBM can always result in greater profits2. The management style of the company can be described as ___.A. openB. closeC. competitiveD. trusty3. In the sentence in the third paragraph "My wife did the books," the word "books" means ____.A. the books which the company ownedB. the books stored m the writer's house in BlacksburgC. records of money received and spentD. sheets of paper bound together for writing4. The author adopted open-book management ____.A. because of the increase of employeesB. according to the recommendation of a business writerC. because of the big profits it would bringD. without being aware of it5. According to the author, the most outstanding benefit of his management is that his company ____.A. makes more profits than his competitorsB. has created a trusty atmosphereC. makes his finance known to his employeesD. has made a bigger piece of the piePassage T woReading to oneself is a modern activity which was almost unknown to the scholars of the classical and medieval (中世纪) worlds, while in the fifteenth century the term "reading" undoubtedly meant reading aloud. Only in the nineteenth century did silent reading become commonplace. However, one should be cautious to assume that silent reading came about simply becausereading aloud is a distraction to others. Examination of factors related to the historical development of silent reading reveals that it became the usual form of reading for most adult reading tasks mainly because the tasks themselves changed in character. The last century saw a steady gradual increase in literacy (识字), and thus in the number of readers. As readers increased, the number of potential listeners declined, and thus there was some reduction in the need to read aloud. As reading for the benefit of listeners grew less common, so came the flourishing of reading as a private activity in such public places as libraries, railway carriages and offices, where reading aloud would cause distraction to other readers.Towards the end of the last century there was still considerable argument over whether books should be used for information or treated respectfully, and over whether the reading of materials such as newspapers was in some way mentally weakening. Indeed this argument still remains with us in education. However, whatever its virtues, the old shared literacy culture had gone and was replaced by the printed mass media on the one hand and by books and periodicals for a specialized readership on the other. At the end of the last century students were being recommended to adopt attitudes to books and to use skills in reading them which were inappropriate, if not impossible, for the oral reader. The social, cultural, and technological changes in the century had greatly altered what the term "reading" implied.6. “Reading to oneself ”in the first paragraph means _________.A. reading aloud to oneselfB. reading aloud to oneself as well as lo othersC. both silent reading and reading aloud to oneselfD. silent reading7. From the first paragraph we can infer that______.A. it was not until the fifteenth century that people began to know the differencebetween reading aloud and silent readingB. scholars of the classical and medieval worlds could only read aloudC. silent reading was not popular before the nineteenth centuryD. silent reading was not accepted before the nineteenth century8. Silent reading came about because _____.A. reading aloud could disturb othersB. the number of people who could read was increasingC. people preferred to read in publicD. people were less interested in reading aloud9. According to the context, the word "commonplace" in the first paragraph most probably describes something ____.A. that happens often, and therefore is not surprisingB. that does not happen often, and therefore is surprisingC. that is very surprisingD. that is very unusual10. In the passage the author tries to show ____.A. the correct attitude towards readingB. how the present-day reading habits came aboutC. different attitudes towards booksD. the change the word "reading" underwentPassage ThreeIt is now commonly known that AIDS is a deadly disease. It does great damage to human beings‟immune system, weakening resistance to disease and leading to death due to utter weakness. To this day, there are no existing drugs that can kill the AIDS virus. It is a deadly battle between science and AIDS.This is only one side of the story. Although it cannot be cured, AIDS is preventable. For those who have not caught the disease, the knowledge of preventive measures seems to be the most powerful weapon at hand.Since the discovery of the first AIDS patient in 1985, the number of HIV carrier is on an alarming rise in China and statistics show that young people are the more likely victims of AIDS. Nationwide there are 214 million people between the ages of 13 and 22, most of whom are students. If no measures are taken to protect these young people, it is almost certain that the threat of AIDS will be very real to them. There has been a great deal of misinformation concerning the transmission of AIDSOne of the most misleading myths is that AIDS can be transmitted by casual physical contact such as kissing, shaking hands or sharing food containers. Surveys and investigation conducted in some universities and colleges show that half of those people questioned are not clear about how AIDS is transmitted, not to mention how it is prevented. This is the driving force behind the State Education Commission‟s decision to spread AIDS awareness information among college students and later to high school students and primary school students.11.Why does the passage say that AIDS is a deadly disease?A.Because the AIDS patients can not resist disease and die.B.Because the doctor can find no medicine to cure AIDS.C.Because it destroys the immune system of the human body.D.All of the above12.By writing “This is only side of the story” the author suggests that___.a)AIDS is very dangerous, but we should not be scared by itb)AIDS is not curable, but doctor should not give up fighting against itc)although we can‟t cure AIDS, we can manage to prevent itd)although the doctor cannot cure the disease, yet he can help improve the patients‟ health13.What does the passage say has happened in China since the first AIDS patient was discoveredin 1985?a)More and more people have become HIV carrierb)More and more HIV carriers have died of AIDSc)HIV carrier have learned to fight against AIDSd)Doctor have been alarmed by the large number of HIV carrier14.What can be concluded from the surveys and investigations mentioned in the passage?a)Many college students did not mention AIDS prevention in the survey and investigationsb)Many college students are not aware how people become AIDS victimsc)50 percent of college students do not know how to prevent AIDSd)50 percent of college students have no idea how people become AIDS victims.15.Which of the following do you choose as the proper title of this passage?a)AIDS----A Deadly Disease.b)AIDS---- Information Is Necessaryc)China Fight AIDSd)Y oung People----Most Likely AIDS VictimsⅤ.
